I'm mostly competitive with myself

I always wanna be the winner. I always wanna be on top.

I cut when I'm certain.

[Tim] Andrae, you're still on the dress form?

This is a little alarming.

Andrae, what were you thinking?

The coat, I wore because I was really tired

and it reflected my emotion.

I don't need to hear all this.

I just wanna see it.

I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.

Chloe, you are the winner of this challenge.

Santino, you're in.

[Santino] They just didn't wanna give me two in a row.

Andrae, you're in.

I really like her.

[Heidi] Three finalists will make it

to Olympus Fashion Week.

You will see me at Fashion Week.

[Heidi] But only one can be the winner.

Heck yeah, I'm gonna win this.

For these 16 designers...

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[upbeat music playing]

[Diana] Chloe?

We have, like, 30 minutes to be downstairs.

Oh, 7:00.

I won the, um, Clothes Off the Back challenge

It felt great, because it was a humongous validation.

I'm sad Kirsten's gone.

But, you know...

I don't think she was the most talented out of all of them.

I mean, based on who's been eliminated so far...

I just think it's been correct.

I think we have to change rooms around.

[Guadalupe] You just have a lot of nervous tension

and, like, it's exuding out.

and I don't think you are handling things

in a way that was appropriate.

It's your nervous tension that you're projecting on to me.

-[Guadalupe] No. -I'm so sorry to say.

[Guadalupe] I...

I have been a nervous wreck?

Oh, goodness.

You can say it however you like, girl.

I think, uh, Kara, you know, has a tendency

to have these elaborate blowouts of just nervousness.

It's just a disturbance...

and I don't respect people who...

who try and disturb other people.

I've been getting a lot of, uh, teasing...

which I think is fair.

Crying on the runway is not something

that I relish ever doing again...

because I don't like to think of myself as weak.

for one of fashion's most important

and stylish icons.

and the eliminated designer's model...

Melissa and Grace.

Models, this also is

a competition for you, as well.

Well, as Heidi told you...

you are designing for

a fashion icon.

And this is a big

fashion icon.

Even more exciting is the fact

that you're going to be meeting this icon

at her house.

-[cheering] -[gasping]

Very thrilling.

So we're going to take a walk.

So everybody gather your things and follow me, okay?

[upbeat music playing]

[Andrae] We started walking up the street.

And it was very, very strange.

And I thought, this is a bizarre way

to meet a fashion icon.

So then I thought, well, maybe she lives nearby.

[Nick] We just kept walking...

and then we kept walking...

and we kept walking.

So please look around at where we are.

We are in the center of the universe, so to speak.

[Nick] We're in Times Square.

God, I knew I should've worn a better outfit.

This is where we're going.

[designers] Toys "R" Us?

Oh! No way!

When I saw the store, I was actually a little worried.

All right, Tim, lead the way, Pied Piper.

[upbeat music playing]

[Chloe] We're still debating. "Sarah Jessica Parker--

It has to be her, it has to be her."

Some of us are thinking Alicia Keys.

We totally still thought it was someone that was famous.

Oh, my God, it's Barbie!

[cheering and shouting]

Welcome to Toys "R" Us Times Square.

And this is your fashion icon's house--Barbie.

[Kara] I was so excited.

I played with Barbie...

my mom played with Barbie...

my sisters played with Barbie.

I'm thrilled to introduce you to Lily Martinez...

a designer for Mattel...

who is going to present you with your next challenge.

[designers greeting]

We have the "My Scene" Barbie doll line.

It's for, really an older girl

that aspires to be a teenager.

Basically, My Scene Barbie is all about fashion...

fun, and friendship.

We have a couple of other dolls

that each have their distinct personalities.

And then we have Barbie, who is the social director.

And she's--she's the trendsetter of the bunch.

So your challenge, you guys, is to come up with

a special new look for My Scene Barbie...

life-sized for your model.

[Tim] This challenge

is a test of your creative vision.

[Santino] I'm a boy that's played with dolls all my life.

You know, it'd be great to win this one.

[Chloe] I think this is gonna be kinda difficult...

'cause it's so diverse.

Barbie dresses in every style there is.

She's everything to everybody and to every girl.

You may have noticed that there are 13 dolls here.

There's one for each of you.

The doll will serve as your muse.

[Nick] While Tim and Lily were talking...

I was, like, ah, scoping out who--

you know, I got my first choice, and I got my second choice

just in case somebody will take it.

Have fun, be creative.

So come forward and choose a doll.

-Whoo! -Ah!

[Santino] It was a mad race.

[Raymundo] It became, like, sort of...

like, crazy, 'cause everybody was

pushing to try to get to their doll.

Ahh!

[Andrae] We had grabbed our Barbies.

And I thought for certain that we'd have to do something

very much in the vein of the doll that we picked.

[Marla] Somebody grabbed her!

[Chloe] These people are crazy.

You're not designing based on that one Barbie you got.

You're designing on every Barbie.

Hey.

[designer] Whoo!

[designer] My Scene Barbie.

For My Scene Barbie.

We have to think about cool Barbie.

[designer] We're home.

[Nick] This is our muse, and what other outfit

would she want?

[Tim] You need to design from-- from scratch...

based on your ideas.

We could jumble these all up. They could all be mixed around.

Hey, listen, speaking of jumbling things up

-and mixing things around-- -Should we change the clothes?

No. Where's Kara?

She was on the elevator, and she lost a hat.

Kara--she was just shaking her Barbie...

and then the hat flew out.

And it fell into the side of the escalator.

What, is she in some wild panic?

-[laughter] -Yeah, pretty much.

I agree, yes. Since this morning.

[Kara] A little hat, a Barbie hat.

I've never known so much commotion

for a Barbie's hat.

But since she is my muse...

and since I do like hats, I wanted the damn hat.

Do you see it?

Ohh!

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway.

No, I mean, I can do this if you tell me how to do it.

Marla was just really weak.

You know what?

[Andrae] It's come undone.

[upbeat music playing]

[Chloe] This challenge was to design an outfit

for the new Barbie, which is My Scene Barbie.

My Scene Barbie-- It's all about being seen.

I think that's why she's called "My Scene Barbie."

'Cause it's all about her.

All right, you have 30 minutes

to sketch, to work out your designs.

And then we're going to go shopping.

So use the 30 minutes wisely.

And you have two days to finish this task.

[Nick] When I was young, and my sister had her Barbies,

I'm sure I probably put the outfits together

better than my sister.

I thought about it in the box.

Colors, the shape of it.

And how would it pop out in the box?

Well, this way she's got a little fringe action going on.

That's Miss Texas.

[Emmett] Yeah, exactly. Miss Western.

I wanted my expression to be colorful...

feminine, and frivolous.

[Raymundo] I don't like all this idea

of little dolls being all really made up.

My little girl in my head...

she will look like her mom.

But at the same time, you know...

bring her up to the latest trends.

Here, right below me.

-[man 1] You got it? -[man 2] I got it.

You got it. Guys, I love you.

[Kara] I flung the Barbie. The hat went flying.

And it got caught between the escalator and the wall.

I didn't have as much time to sketch

as the rest of them.

[Daniel F.] Kara, she went back to Toys "R" Us.

She cut into her sketching time

by going to get that little hat.

She has to think about the design.

[Tim] Hi, everybody.

We're going shopping.

Ready to go?

-[designers] Yeah. -Off we go.

[upbeat music playing]

[Zulema] For the Barbie challenge, we received $150.

We had two days to complete the challenge.

But I'm glad you're swatching.

You could just give me a swatch that has some pink in it.

Yeah, I really like the psychedelic one.

I feel strong about this.

Yeah, I'm really playing with mixing.

All right, we'll see. You look a little...

disabled by this whole thing.

I'm a little overwhelmed. There's a lot of choices.

Not only do I have to pull this together in--

in 45 minutes,

but I've got to assess what's there.

Kara.

We have 10 minutes.

-Is this it? -That's it.

You look like you're in good shape.

Yeah, I'm in good shape.

Oof.

Sorry, baby, one yard of that, eh?

One and a half yards, and the tulle, please.

Kara, time's up.

They're just cutting, Tim, I swear to you.

Here she is, my muse.

[Nick] The challenge is to design

an actual life-size garment

for your model

inspired by the My Scene Barbie.

This is my Barbie, and she's my inspiration.

And she sort of gives me sort of

a Telemundo, Copa Cabana chick.

I found this great, uh, jersey fabric.

I'm gonna do the apple green, this sort of emerald...

and then layer it like this.

[Chloe] When I think of Barbie, I think of pink.

And every girl likes pink.

That is gorgeous fabric.

[designer] It's beautiful.

Oh!

[Diana] I am making a garment that has

a very large hood on it, so they can kind of

pull the hood down and style it as a collar.

You're doing Barbie Couture for sure.

[Santino] It's gonna be a combination

of knit and woven fabrics, um, going on

simultaneously to give, like, fit and flare.

I always want to be the best.

And anything less than the best...

I feel like a complete and total failure.

One piece here for bust and then one piece here for shoulder.

One-- two seams.

Simplify, simplify!

You just want to have the pleats here, but just--

Yeah, I didn't want 'em there.

Although I kind of don't mind

having them there too.

[designer] It won't be pretty there, Marla.

It just shows that you're not good at draping.

I'm not good at draping.

I'm really self-taught.

There are opportunities I've missed out on

by raising my son

and being in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

I think I'm a little insecure

because I haven't had formal training.

[both speaking at once]

Okay, I'll do this.

I can do this, yeah. No, I--

I mean, I can do this if you tell me how to do it.

[Chloe] In this group...

it's all about having talent or skill.

You know, you really shouldn't be here

if you don't know how to put a garment together.

-Okay, mark your center front-- -Mark my center front.

Which you haven't really done

-which is bad. -Oh, I pressed it in.

Yeah, but you're not even on your center front.

[Andrae] I don't worry that Marla,

um, doesn't have as much experience.

She's a pretty successful woman.

I think she's taking a new direction now

by pursuing a more creative bend.

[Chloe] Okay.

If she can't handle this challenge technically,

there's no way she's gonna handle the next challenge.

How is everyone?

-Hi, Tim. -[Tim] Hi.

Raymundo, what are you doing?

I'm finished already cutting the, uh,

pretty much the whole dress,

so start to drape,

and, uh, finish the jacket.

Now, what-- the jacket's out of this?

No, the jacket's out of this.

-[Tim] Oh, it's out of that? -Yeah.

I just will say there's an awful lot happening.

It's more about the jacket, I think, for me this time.

Mm-hmm.

-All right. -The jacket meaning what?

I'm ambivalent about that fabric with this.

I took the characteristics of My Scene Barbie

and I put it into my perspective.

I don't believe that all this idea

about making little girls start looking, you know,

pretty grown-up already at such a young age.

Little girls should have a chance to be little girls.

I think it's too Barbie's mom.

-Oh, then fix that. -I am, I am.

-Don't let that happen. -I'm gonna skimp it out.

I'm gonna skimp it up. I'm gonna shorten it.

And this will make it more youthful.

Once it's looped through this, each of them,

it's actually really cute looking.

What's happening here?

With this seam?

That was-- you're so good.

You don't miss anything.

The skirt started out,

it was going to maybe have some seaming detail...

and then I realized I was maybe asking for trouble.

All of this speaks to incredible potential.

-You're not there yet. -Okay.

[Chloe] Uh, it's day two of the My Scene Barbie challenge.

It's such a diverse idea what Barbie should wear.

I think it's a very tough challenge.

[Tim] Everybody, can I ask you to gather around, please?

We have a special surprise.

Lily has come to visit us.

-[Lily] Hi, guys. -[designers] Hi.

I'm back.

But I have a surprise to tell you guys.

So in addition to the life size

fashion outfit you guys are creating,

we would like you guys to replicate it

for the My Scene Barbie in miniature.

[designers] Oh...

[Tim] And there's more.

Mattel will reproduce the winning doll

to be sold in limited quantities as a special edition

with your name and picture

on the box.

[cheers and applause]

As a designer, you know, to have my work

put out there in the international markets

is something so spectacular, because you go from step one,

and then you go to, like, step 300, you know?

We have to make a little miniature version for the doll.

It's time away from my main outfit.

[Santino] Marla, you know, she wears

a big, shiny, tacky badge of, uh, of being self-taught.

It's perspective on the-- on the design.

When one goes to a museum

and you're looking at, uh, at a Monet, for example...

well, you come up to it, and you can see the brush strokes.

But then you step back, and you see the whole picture.

[Chloe] The Daniel Franco Shuffle.

When he design, he actually looks at it,

pin it on, walks away, dance a little bit.

[Daniel V.] For me, I think he should

be able to kind of just, like--[smacks lips]

put it on and step back and look at it...

and go, next one.

The constant walk back-- I think it's a little too much.

[Chloe] It works for him.

It's wastes a lot of time.

How are you feeling?

I wanted this to kind of look like she bought

a vintage dress and chopped it up herself.

And I still wanted it to be sporty.

-the potential runway dialogue. -[Andrae] Yes, of course.

[Tim] Andrae, can I see you for a minute?

Oh, no, no, it's, um--

it's not gonna take more than a couple of minutes.

I just have to tell you

I was concerned about the behavior

that was demonstrated last time on the runway.

[crying]

[Tim] I have to say I felt

you were fueling the emotions.

It just seemed almost like a contrivance.

[Andrae] I was seriously emotional.

But I don't want to ever appear vulnerable.

You're extremely intelligent.

And God knows you're extremely talented.

Use that runway dialogue

to demonstrate all that.

Well, thank you, Tim, I appreciate that.

I'm basically not afraid of my emotions.

I allow them to occur, I guess, as they--

as they come to me, but, um...

I feel really good about my designs.

I'm ready for whatever the judges throw at me.

We also have to get our models ready with hair and makeup.

I'm a little nervous, but I really have

no idea what the outcome will be.

I could've, uh, done more to my outfit.

[Tim] You know the drill.

We're bringing in the models.

You go to the TRESemmé hair salon...

you go to the L'Oréal Paris makeup room.

We have exactly two hours,

and we are now in possession of 13

long, blonde Barbie-like wigs.

You don't have to do it.

But I want to encourage you to do it.

-All right? -[woman] Uh-hmm.

-[Tim] Make it work. -[man] Let's do it.

You can't take this on and off.

Okay, I need to try this skirt on you really quickly.

The jacket is the main point of the outfit now.

I'm the one that's least finished

in the whole room, okay?

So I have a lot of, like, a lot of work to do.

So remember what we did last time

where you're taking care of your hair,

taking care of the makeup? I need you, again, to kick in.

-Yeah. I'm gonna-- -When the models came in,

I was--I was frantic.

I was, like, so pressed for time.

And what about, like, a thing around your neck?

Okay, here's the jacket.

[Santino] Marla...

is, like, grasping at straws.

I can't believe, like, she's even made it this far.

So it messed up my whole hem, so I'm cutting it out.

[Daniel F.] The dress looks sensational on, Tim.

It's a sight to see.

Okay, all right, good. I can't wait to see it.

Yeah, I'm definitely gonna cut it up to here.

It's a little intense.

Um, I'm trying to finish off this dress.

I'm not going home. I'm just not.

[Tim] Everybody...

[Andrae] She doesn't look like Barbie.

She never will look like Barbie.

You know, I dare a judge to say...

and start sewing you in, okay?

[Daniel F.] Up until the last second, I was, uh...

setting the sleeve on the model, clipping threads...

and making sure the silhouette was right.

Daniel.

-This is it. -What?!

[Daniel F.] I gotta do the best I can.

Hopefully it's something compelling enough

that the judges will keep me in.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway...

There's nothing deliciously girlie about her.

To me, she's a little sad.

Welcome to the runway.

As you know in fashion...

one day you're in,

and the next day you're out.

There are 13 of you now.

And at the end of tonight,

there will be 12.

The challenge was to design a special look

for a fashion icon: Barbie.

We gave you $150

and two days to complete

your look for your model...

and a miniature version

for your Barbie.

The winning designer

will have their Barbie look

manufactured and sold

as a special edition by Mattel.

This challenge is about creative vision.

And that's what we'll be judging tonight.

Let's meet the judges.

Fashion designer, Michael Kors.

Nina Garcia, fashion director of ELLE magazine.

And Lily Martinez,

the head designer for My Scene Barbie.

We will be scoring your designs

as they come down the runway.

The designer with the highest score

will win this challenge.

And one of you will be out.

Let's start the show.

[upbeat music playing]

[Santino] I'd be really, really happy

if I won this one.

I was trying to create something

that looked like a confection...

looked hip and cute

and frilly and girlie...

but a little-- a little sassy too.

[Guadalupe] For the Barbie challenge...

for the most part, I felt pretty confident

that I had finished and completed the job.

It was cute, it was fun, it was Barbie.

[Chloe] I actually for a moment thought...

I could see that in a box.

'Cause it was flowing

and it had that glittering, mirror effect.

It was a good feeling.

[Nick] I picked a very swirly print.

I thought about it in the box.

It's gotta grab a little girl's attention.

[Daniel V.] To win this Barbie challenge

would, of course, be amazing.

But I'm not sure if the judges

are looking for the more sophisticated look

that I'm giving them.

[Zulema] I was very, very happy.

It actually looked really, really good.

[Kara] Every time I get onto that runway...

I get nervous. But you know what?

You've got to just really believe

and be confident in what you've done.

I really liked the outfit.

I really thought it was great.

[Emmett] I was happy with what I saw on the runway.

It was very frilly.

And I think a young girl

would be very attracted to that look.

[Marla] I have my own particular personality

that I bring to my outfit.

I'm fairly happy with what I did

and I have no clue

what kind of response I'm gonna get.

I could be out. Who knows?

Hope not.

[Raymundo] I'm trying to make a statement here.

And I'm hoping that the judges will see

my idea on what I think little girls should be wearing.

[Andrae] When you're able to manifest

what was in your head...

it's probably the most rewarding experience

you can have as a designer.

[Diana] When I saw my look coming down the runway...

I was really satisfied.

Her hair turned out great with the wig.

Felt like I was really able to pull it together.

[Daniel F.] When I saw Claudia walk down...

I thought,

God, she's so--looks so cool.

I grew up

with 3,000 Barbie dolls in my house.

I played with Barbies, I dressed Barbies.

There's the whole lifestyle of Barbie

I know very well.

So this is-- this is what I created.

I think you did an amazing job.

I really like the color.

It's very girl appealing.

I have actually a question for Andrae.

Why didn't you put a wig on your model?

First of all,

put a blonde wig on this gorgeous girl,

you might notice the wig

and the fact that it is definitely not

the way her hair comes out of her head.

-I looked at her more, -Because she--

because she didn't have the hair.

My Scene Barbie seems to be about individualism.

And I wanted to honor that as well.

I think you read into everything.

-[laughs] -Like, a lot.

-Oh, you do? -[Michael] It's fashion.

[Andrae] She's blonde...

with that whole sort of young

sense of fun and feeling and--

with her girlfriends, do you know what I mean?

She looks like she might be going to school.

It, to me, looks like

a fabulous children's wear project.

I know little girls who would wear that...

exactly as we see it.

Nick, tell me about your, um...

your Barbie.

You know, I have a niece,

and I was thinking of what would I,

as Uncle Nick, would buy for her.

Now, granted, I'm a different type of Uncle Nick.

-So I thought, I looked around-- -[laughter]

I looked around at all the other

My Scene Barbie dolls, and I thought

what was missing was sort of this young,

hip daughter of a European mogul,

who went to Capri...

and she hangs out with her girlfriends.

So that was my whole mood.

I like your details.

-Colors work. -[Michael] You know, what else--

[Lily] She looks like a life-size doll.

She sells you the whole thing.

I think it's cute, really cute.

[Heidi] I want to ask Raymundo...

where is your Barbie going?

[Raymundo] So I'm from the West Coast.

So I--right away, I started thinking of surfer girl.

So I'm thinking she's ready to go out to the beach...

she's ready for the summer.

And, you know, I kept it fun with the colors.

To me, she looks like My Scene Barbie's mother.

It's actually really kind of weird that you said "mother"

'cause what I kept on thinking too was, you know...

uh, a little girl's dream also sometimes

is to be like her mother.

[Michael] Doesn't it look like a Halloween tablecloth?

It's tableclothy to me, I don't know.

There's nothing deliciously

girlie about her.

Marla... let's ask you a few questions.

Why this color?

She's a little overdone... and she's trying to be

maybe a little bit more, um...

grown-up than she is.

And, um, yeah.

She's kind of fancy.

To me, she's a little sad.

I mean, that's my reaction.

[Nina] I agree with Michael. It's a--

it's a very serious color.

I mean, she's supposed to be 16.

It's supposed to be hip and cool.

And I think some really didn't go there.

Yeah, some of them missed the whole idea that she was Barbie.

Nick really did think about the whole thing,

As an adult,

she still made you want to be Barbie.

I was like, that's a doll walking

-in front of me, you know? -He did a good job.

"Good luck, baby."

I did like Santino's dress.

[Lily] I really love the detail

that he put on that dress.

[Heidi] And, you know, you looked at the Barbie...

and the Barbie looked just as good as the real model.

She was great in miniature.

She was really cute in miniature.

And the color was fun.

I was surprised you didn't like Kara...

because I liked Kara.

[Michael] What's the point? No aspiration.

[Heidi] Everyone has a jean miniskirt with a ruffle on it.

Exactly.

-You know Andrae-- -The wig thing drove me crazy.

[Nina] I don't think the outfit was that great.

It wasn't trendy. it wasn't hip, it wasn't cool.

Raymundo, I mean, first off...

I mean, she, to me, looked like barefoot Appalachian

Little Abner Barbie.

She looked old, matronly and sad.

Just sad.

He did say that he wanted

to think of this Barbie as a surfer girl...

but I didn't really see any surfer print, or--

There was so much that you could've done.

The only thing surfer were the white sunglasses.

Marla put her in that terrible cranberry color.

She kind of looked like, I don't know, like a--

like a mother of the bride.
