[Nick] My inspiration might be a little bit at a loss.

I don't want to be here.

There's a part of me that want's to just be done with it.

[Santino] Designers, up until now

When Tim says then you have to listen, but I have to save it.

Tim did not make this dress.

[Heidi] But only one can be the winner.

Heck yeah, I'm gonna win this.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[upbeat music playing]

[Nick] You see-- Okay, I know a new rule.

Do not go out like Zulema.

That's the rule, do not go out like Zulema.

A couple days ago Zulema took my model.

And it just put a lot of tension, not just with myself

and Zulema, but as well as the other designers.

When she was eliminated

I sort of was relieved in a way.

In my head, Zulema has never been in my final three.

And so I wasn't surprised that she was out

because her garment was the worst.

It was poorly fitted. It was poorly sewn.

[Kara J.] Being one of the last six

has been a nice surprise.

I think you did something very literal.

I'm, like, pinching myself again.

Hello.

[designers] Hi, Heidi.

Are you ready for your next challenge?

[designers] Yes, we are.

You will be making an outfit for a garden party.

Tomorrow, Tim will take you shopping

and fill you in on all the details.

Let's bring out the winning

and losing designers' models.

Models, this also is a competition for you as well.

The model paired with the winner of Project Runway

will get a fashion spread in ELLE magazine.

Daniel, you were the winner of the last challenge.

Your model was Rebecca.

And if you decide to stay with her, Tarah will be out.

If you decide not to choose either of these two,

I will bring out all the models for you to pick from.

I think she's a great model.

But Kara and I are here because we have proven

that we are talented designers.

You know, I've heard of those fabulous Park Avenue apartments

where people actually have gardens.

But I had no idea.

-All right. -[designer] Thank you.

I'll go wake up the girls.

Did someone knock on our door?

Good morning.

-Good morning, Tim. -How are you, Chloe?

-Good. -So get your stuff together

and meet me downstairs in about five minutes.

[Chloe] Okay. Oh, that's cool.

We get to go on a trip with Tim again.

-[Tim] Yeah. -That'll be fun.

-So I'll see you downstairs. -[Chloe] Okay.

[Andrae] I didn't know where we would go.

I thought, oh, well, maybe we're going

to Tavern on the Green or something,

'cause I've been dying to get to Central Park.

[Daniel V.] When Tim was taking us down the street,

I was thinking,

"You know, there's no fabric stores

really in this area.

What has he got planned?"

[suspenseful music playing]

[Tim] Heidi delivered your challenge,

which is to design an outfit for a garden party.

Yeah.

And where better to shop

for this challenge than the flower district?

Where we are right now.

[Chloe] My mouth just dropped. I'm, like, "Oh, my God.

I don't wanna deal with this."

My brain was, like, thinking really fast.

How am I gonna do it? What am I gonna pick?

[Tim] You have three destinations.

Here at The Plant House, Fischer & Page,

which is right across the street,

and Jamali, which is just down the block.

We have $100, and an hour to shop.

So use your time strategically.

Think very creatively about your designs.

And make it work.

[Nick] I just dreaded it.

Of course the whole time I was, like...

But really, I was, like, "Oh, dear Lord."

I had to stay long enough for the damn flow--

make a dress out of flower task.

Okay, all right. Off you go.

[designer] Thank you.

[Daniel V.] We have three different stores to choose from.

So I went to Jamali first

'cause they had the actual construction tools

to engineer flowers.

I don't know--I don't know what I need right now.

I was a little perplexed.

I'm, like... [gasp]

God, what do you get? What do you get?

You know, how are we gonna put this together?

Ugh!

[Nick] I was looking for things that would be bendable.

Thought they could bend.

You didn't see that.

Things that would last.

But I had no idea what I was gonna make.

[Santino] I spent $70 at the florist supply store.

I got some mesh and things to kind of build

into the construction

of whatever garment I was gonna make.

[Chloe] I didn't wanna deal with anything really delicate.

So, you know, I chose leaves,

because I knew leaves will stay alive at least for a day.

Right now I only have $65 left to spend.

I know.

-You're in trouble. -I know.

Wow, flowers are expensive.

Only good ones.

Right.

[Andrae] I worked in a florist's when I was a kid.

So I don't feel like I'm

in the deep end of the swimming pool.

Andrae, 30 minutes.

-Brilliant. I'm done. -You're done?

[Andrae] I'm finished.

And I'm waiting for everybody else.

[Kara J.] I don't know what my idea is yet,

but I'm kind of buying flowers

that will add more flower to the structure.

For $30, if I could get that ficus.

A small one of these?

And, like, a small one of these?

No problem.

[Santino] They sold me three plants for $30.

I love Plant House.

You're done, Nick's done, Andrae's done.

And Kara's done.

We have five minutes.

[Tim] Where did Chloe go?

that I'm gonna individually place each leaf on top

of each other, so it's gonna look like a cascaded print.

I've won three challenges now.

Obviously, the judges like what I'm doing.

And so whatever I'm doing I'm just gonna keep doing

because it seems that it's workin'.

So hopefully that's enough to get me to the top three.

[Chloe] You actually have the most wins so far.

[Daniel V.] I've only been doing fashion design for three years.

-Pretty darn good at it. -Thank you.

I've just graduated from college.

So my biggest weakness as a designer

is actual industry experience.

You're pretty good at everything you do, huh?

It's kinda sick, Daniel.

I tried to play basketball once.

-Uh-huh. -That didn't work out very well.

[laughter]

[Tim] Okay, everybody.

Can you gather round?

Mm-hmm.

I have a very nice announcement.

The winner of this challenge

has immunity for the next challenge.

because I'd really like to know

that I've made it to the last four.

That has become my new goal, is just get to the last four,

and then let, you know, God sort it out.

for the next challenge and not be penalized for it.

And that's what I'm really hoping to do.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway...

To expect this to hold up just as the material?

[Tim] Santino...

I wanna hear more.

[laughing] The florists are at work.

My design is just a summer dress

that's wrapped across in the front

with straps, and it's gonna look like

this cool textural print that, if you look far away,

you really can't tell that it's actually made of leaves.

[Kara J.] I'm braiding raffia.

It's a fakey-looking, grassy thing.

I have no idea right now what I'm gonna be using.

Now I've got a pile of green.

The only thing I wanna do with it is smoke it,

to tell you the truth.

[Santino] I'm making an outfit consisting of a tropical leaf,

a ficus tree, and some type of fern.

I wanna do something really pretty and sophisticated

and sexy, but also definitely whimsical.

[Daniel V.] The ferns that I purchased I'm using

for the entire bottom of the skirt.

And then the flowers will be surrounding the bustline.

It's just kind of opening up and cascading.

[Andrae] I chose a lot of dead or half-dead things,

or things that would die beautifully.

I got a couple bags of Spanish moss,

baby's breath, and dried lavender.

My actual project is like a little topiary dress.

Kind of reminiscent of late '50s haute couture.

And like, also, a French garden.

[Nick] My design was this fitted bodice with a bustier.

And then a full skirt.

That would be the foundation for it.

And then I'd put the flowers, the plants, everything on it.

-Hi, everybody. -Hello.

[Tim] Can I interrupt you briefly?

I'd like to walk around to see what you're doing.

Okay?

Hi, Chloe. So how are you doing?

[Chloe] I'm still working on my complete design.

But I'm gonna put the skirt down,

do the whole skirt,

and see what I wanna do with the top.

Okay. You're gonna bring all those petals in

-to the sewing machine? -I think it's fine. Look.

This is not going away. It hasn't.

It's been, like, a few hours already.

[laughter]

-What just happened... -Mm-hmm.

This can't happen on the runway.

No, I know. I'm gonna check it.

I'm gonna make sure that it won't fall off.

It sounds very ambitious.

resolve these issues as soon as you can.

[Daniel V.] Yes, it is.

-Wow. -As are those gorgeous flowers.

And then here, I'd love to do a small basket weave.

But the length is, realistically,

it's only a few inches wide.

I mean, it's four inches. I can do that.

-It's relatively simple. -It's time.

It is time.

Nick, wow.

I wasn't expecting that.

Were you expecting to use the stones?

[Nick] No, I wasn't.

And I just wanted to utilize what I have,

since I don't have that much.

I spent everything,

down to, like, I think a dollar.

And I didn't really get much.

Do you have enough material?

-I think-- -To really do all this?

Right, yeah, I might not-- it might be rather short.

I do think the length may be

determined by how much you have.

[Nick] Exactly. Yeah.

You know, it may become a micro mini.

Look at this.

[Santino] You know, I wanted to go with plants more so

than flowers, just 'cause I didn't wanna

run into the situation flowers don't last.

I guess I just see these being so powerful.

It makes me question why all the form here?

-But it's up to you. Yeah. -Yeah.

I'm just playing with this right now.

I just came out to my parents a year ago.

But, you know, but like, that was like the rent-a-date

with the Catholic high school

because I could dance,

I could dress well.

Twenty years later, they're like,

"Why didn't we figure it out?"

[Chloe] Still not accepting it.

I grew up in Michigan.

It's still the Bible belt.

I grew up in a really strict Christian family.

[Nick] Wow, Daniel, I didn't know.

It was hard, of course, I mean...

To be labeled a f*g

in upper middle class white America was difficult.

But everyone has been very supportive.

I have made some really good friends.

And that helped me grow into the person that I am today.

There's certain things you're gonna get in a guy

and certain things you get in a girl and...

my ex-girlfriend doesn't know.

-[Chloe] What? -Really?

-So you had girlfriends? -[Daniel V.] Oh, yeah.

[Chloe] That's my fear, is to date a...

[Nick] Yeah. Your extra special...

Your biggest fear is to date a g*y guy?

[Daniel V.] It's funny. It's definitely funny.

I just kind of created this little story in my head

that, you know, Tim and Andrae had this romance going.

we can make it work.

[Chloe] Andrae is laughing along with it.

I'm a little bit, like, "Oh, my God, does Tim Gunn know

about this joke between him and Andrae?"

[imitating Tim] If we continue to fight

in front of my colleagues at Red Lobster,

we're gonna have to break up.

They've gone through the honeymoon period.

And now they get into these little squabbles

at Red Lobster.

We're gonna try to make this work.

think that there's a lot more fantastic possibilities

that I could put into this thing.

[Nick] I didn't have a lot of leaves to fill in the skirt.

So I'm just basically going to cut it off at this level.

So all that's gonna be gone.

So it'll be a mini-dress all wrapped around.

What the hell am I gonna do? I'm so not done.

[Santino] I've sprayed it thoroughly with shellac.

[designer] I'm sending a bush down the runway.

My dress is not done at all.

It's time management,

and I did not manage my time well this time.

[Tim] Chloe I'm looking at this, you need tons of time.

You need an extra set of hands.

I know. And you know what?

Sometimes you just can't finish it.

And I'm not gonna blame anybody,

I just didn't have enough time.

[Kara J.] I felt very close to being out on the last challenge.

I really want to just kind of get through another challenge.

Naturally, winning would be nice.

I think I'd just sleep the day away.

'Cause I'm immune.

[Santino] If I won this challenge,

I would be taking away the immunity

from somebody who doesn't deserve to be in that room.

'Cause there's people that need to go home.

[Nick] I always try to put 110% into each challenge.

I came to New York to be in the top three, if not win.

I don't think any of us is going home today,

so this is a nice thing.

I doubt... I think all--

Somebody has to.

I know, but all the 35D projects look really good.

[Santino] Chloe has a lot to cover.

You can't leave

spaces in between.

Like--did you see how she started doing it?

Honestly, it could be any of us.

I'm kind of nervous. It's not done at all.

My dress was fine.

because I treated all the leaves before I left for the evening.

[Chloe] Hi, Grace!

You know, go hair, makeup first.

There wasn't gonna be time for me

to go visit the hair and makeup people.

So we came up with this sort of crown to,

uh, sort of finalize the whole outfit together.

It's gonna be itchy.

Tell them to give you, like, big hair, but curly.

A Fresh Park Avenue.

I need fresh Park Avenue, not stuffy Park Avenue.

[Chloe] So I thought, okay, for hair and makeup this time,

I'll go a little bit further out.

I put a bunch of leaves in her hair,

almost like a skull cap.

I'm very, very worried about finishing.

You can only do so much with the time that you have.

And you know what?

Sometimes you just can't finish it.

And I'm not gonna blame anybody, you know,

saying, "I'm sorry, I didn't have enough time."

It just--I just didn't have enough time.

Chloe, I'm coming to help you, baby.

Right before the runway show,

I glued on all the blue flowers.

So there was a lot of work that had to be done.

Any empty spaces, glue it in for me.

I'm gonna make the belt.

Oh, Mickey's still busy. Busy guy.

There's four men to two women at the moment.

And Chloe and I, we're kind of really

spurring each other on to get to the top three.

We have to have a woman representin'.

They're gonna tell me my dress is unfinished.

[Chloe] Do you need to work with yours?

-Um... -[Chloe] Go ahead.

Go ahead. I'm fine.

-Are you? -[Chloe] Yeah.

For me, it was a great achievement.

And to be honest, looking around,

As you know, in fashion, one day you're in,

and the next day, you might be out.

There are six of you now,

and after tonight, there will be only five left.

This challenge is about innovation.

We asked you to design an outfit for a garden party

using flowers and plants as your materials.

Let's meet the judges.

The fabulous Michael Kors,

king of jet-set American style.

Fashion director Nina Garcia of ELLE magazine.

And design team Mark Badgley

and James Mischka.

We will be judging your designs

as they come down the runway.

One of you will be named the winner.

And one of you will be out.

Let's start the show.

[Daniel V.] Rebecca looked very sophisticated, very elegant.

And I loved the fact that, almost from far away,

it wouldn't look like plants.

Which I think is very important,

because we're not costume designers,

we're fashion designers.

[Nick] When I saw the look coming down the runway,

I was like, "I hope to God it doesn't come apart."

I was just sort of going, "God, I hope one of those plants

doesn't fall off the dress."

[Chloe] I feel pretty good about my petal-leaved dress.

This has the effect that I was looking for.

Or it didn't have the complete effect,

'cause I ran out of time.

[Santino] I pray the whole time I'm sitting there

that everything stays together.

I mean, I could just imagine, like,

one huge panel off the skirt

just falling off.

[Andrae] My dress was really cute and chic

and very, very French.

I thought that you all were gonna buy, like,

petals of roses, and kind of like,

sew all the rose petals together.

It just surprised me

that everything is so green, you know?

[Michael] Green is the new black.

I'm just gonna start with Nick,

and ask our guests judges, Mark and James,

if they have some questions about your outfit.

[Mark] Why don't you think you used more color?

There's so much green everywhere.

That's how it turned out to be when I went to the floral shop.

I was just picking out greens without realizing.

I was actually picking out plants that would be bendable.

And it just evolved.

I let the plants

and what I had sort of

transform themselves as I worked with them.

[Nina] I am a little bit surprised

that you guys didn't use more flowers.

I mean, it's color, it's beautiful.

It's so inspirational.

You didn't really go for that.

Right, I also--I know I've been doing a lot of,

like, Paris Hilton goes on a resort.

Um...

I just wanted to stray away from

what you might expect of me.

I don't know.

To me, it's not sophisticated.

Okay.

[Heidi] Chloe.

This one looks to me like it almost took the most time.

It's very cloth-like, it's beautiful, it's light.

Looks like it's the most wearable.

I think it's great.

[Nina] When we give you a project,

I like the end result.

I think you put a lot of thought into it.

It looks very beautiful.

It's, uh, it's very professional looking.

And, in a strange,

weird way, very wearable.

I think this is the best fit dress up here.

I think it's beautiful.

Looks like it's built on a little pristine corset.

And I thought that raffia work in the back was amazing.

There's a lot of texture.

I think it's great. I really do.

definitely used the materials.

You used texture.

You kept your eye sort of involved.

And, uh, I think

that you went wild in the flower market

and--and grabbed interesting different things

and used them in a different, interesting way.

What are the materials on this dress?

What is it actually made out of?

What is it made of? Um, it's made of Spanish moss.

And raffia.

And the purple flowers are lavender

and then baby's breath.

I think if you're gonna

do something simple,

I think, number one, you have to care about the fit.

I think that the way that the dress jumps away from her body

in the front is very odd.

I think the other thing

is that it's stiff,

and it's not joyous.

And she looks a little-- I mean, let's be honest.

If you use that much moss,

she looks like a doormat.

I think it could have had a little more personality.

It's a little flat.

Next designer I want to continue with is Daniel.

I think this one's great. I think it's adorable.

I love that it has a lot of color in it

compared to the other ones.

I love the proportions.

It's like a little WASP-y garden party dress.

Exactly.

I think it's very charming.

The inspiration did come from a WASP-y,

uh, little, uh, very charming garden party dress.

I wanted something that could translate from a 20-year-old,

which could be more whimsical,

to a 50-year-old that could still be very practical.

I love to see the flowers.

I think that you sprinkled them in the bottom,

it looks beautiful.

I am crazy about the basket weave

that you did on the bodice. It looks great.

[Mark] Unfortunately, to me,

some of the vegetation gets a little plasticky

or waxy looking.

And it starts to look a little synthetic-y,

-I think, with the crinoline. -[Santino] Right.

There I would really-- I would have loved

some beautiful, beautiful, colorful flowers

to maybe soften, you know,

what it is.

Did you do something to the leaves

to make it more plastic?

[Santino] Yes, I sprayed them, um,

to preserve the color.

The shine of it makes it look very plastic.

-Right. No, I getcha. -[Nina] And it robs it

from its natural feeling.

Right.

I have no problem with it being shiny.

'Cause you're German.

-It's nice when they're-- -[laughter]

Maybe your plants at home need some dusting off.

But I like it when they're shiny.

'Cause we all wanted to see, like, big flower dresses.

But I think everyone saw Austin's thing last time,

and saw it, like, shrink and shrivel away to nothing.

So they were all afraid of that, I think.

Personally, I like Kara.

I like Chloe.

And I like Daniel.

For me, it's, like, between the three of them.

I thought they did, like, the best job.

I thought Daniel's dress was, first off,

a really wearable, chic,

but still, at the same time, charming.

It wasn't old.

Um, great-looking dress that looked like a real dress.

A real garment.

And he's got a really meticulous eye.

Daniel really captured the spirit of the project, I think.

He pushed it, it was impeccable.

I liked it very much.

Chloe's dress, if someone would be wearing that at a party,

and it wouldn't be as bright,

it probably would look like fabric.

-[Michael] Oh, totally. -[Heidi] Yeah, it's not

as obvious that it's, like, a bush.

You know, she really thinks about a woman's body.

So...that's-- that's a great thing.

Kara's I thought was fantastic. I really liked it.

I thought it was very flirty, very feminine.

[Michael] She used texture.

She really used texture in a big way.

So that's very admirable.

It was floral and texture and--yeah.

Both Nick and Andrae were my lowest scores.

[Michael] He can never really explain

why he made the garment.

-[Heidi] Hmm. -[Michael] In a logical way.

[James] I think it was--he's saying

he was trying to get away from Paris Hilton.

But that was the most Paris Hilton thing

I've seen on this whole show by far.

It's hard to make leaves look vulgar.

But, I mean, there's a little bit

of vulgarity, I think, in everything he does.

[Heidi] Andrae... to me, it was boring.

It was like a moss dress

with a bit of fringe on the end and a fringe up top.

[Nina] Yes, it was dull.

But you could see it was Audrey Hepburn and--

He thought about it.

I thought she looked, like, so stiff in it.

I didn't--I didn't see the creativity in it.

I think he needs to think a little bit more

about the woman.

[Michael] He's thinking about wearable art.

It's how do you balance someone who's creative

and talented, which he is,

but with caring about dressing real people.
