[Heidi] New York City.

This is Fashion Week.

Making it here takes more than talent.

You need connections, clout,

and cash, until now.

We sent fashion experts to four cities to find

the best undiscovered designers in America.

The search began in Los Angeles at the downtown Standard Hotel.

If given the right fabrics, like, I can kick a*s.

[woman] You remind me of Todd Oldham.

[Heidi] Chicago was our next stop.

[woman] I want a chance.

I am the struggling artist. I’m the underdog.

[Mary] Have you sold any of your work anywhere?

[man] Yeah, I’ve been selling stuff.

I sell it out of my trunk.

[Heidi] The search moved on to New York.

It’s edgy and nobody has done it.

Who do you see wearing this besides yourself?

Bjork. [chuckles]

[Mary] I think we’re interested in what you could do.

Great. You won’t be sorry.

[Heidi] In Miami, the Fontainebleau Hilton

was the end of the line.

[Mary] We wanna go ahead and make you a finalist.

-Thank you. -[Mary] Congratulations.

I made it. I made it.

[Heidi] A panel of judges met to discuss the finalists.

Slinky, slinky.

[Heidi] And narrowed it down to the 12 best.

Project Runway offers these 12 unknown designers

a chance to show America and the fashion world

what they can do.

Every week, we’ll give them a different challenge

that will test their abilities to the limit.

[screams]

[Heidi] And the top names in the industry

will be judging them.

This just feels unfinished.

I look at the fur and right away I’m like,

I’m in Prada land.

[Heidi] One designer will be cut every week

until three remain.

Those three will show their line

at Olympus Fashion Week, then one winner will be chosen.

The winner will receive a spread in Elle Magazine,

a mentorship with the Banana Republic Design team,

and a hundred thousand dollars to start their own line.

It’s a head start that money just can’t buy,

given to one designer who earns it where it counts,

on the runway.

This is the search for the next big fashion designer.

[Jay] It’s a cutthroat business.

[Kara] The competition was fierce.

[Heidi] Twelve contestants, three finalists,

and one winner.

Three designers will make their runway debut

at Olympus Fashion Week.

[woman] I plan to make it to fashion week.

[Robert] I think I’ll be number one.

[Heidi] And the winner of Project Runway

will receive everything they need

to start their own label.

[woman] I think I deserve to win.

People are gonna start getting pretty bitchy.

Oh, my.

For these 12 contestants,

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[upbeat music playing]

[Mario] The heart of fashion is New York.

You know, if you plan to become a fashion designer,

here would be the place.

I never compromise my art.

I try to satisfy myself and nobody else.

[Nora] I just finished school at Pratt Institute

in Brooklyn, New York.

I was recognized for two years in a row

and winning best collections.

[Austin] I’ve always had this love of clothes.

I mean, as a child, it was just creating,

like, these fairytale gowns,

like playing dress up.

In high school, well, I definitely tried

to fit in and be like a regular person.

But no matter how much I tried, I still got completely teased.

-How you doing? -I’m Austin. Austin.

-Robert. Nice to meet you. -Nice to meet you.

-Hi, Nora. -Nora? How do you do?

Nice to meet you.

[Jay] I worked in porn for an online sex website.

Yes, I was making good money but everything I did,

everything I looked at, my couch, my table,

my cat, my everything was bought with dirty money

and I wanna concentrate on designing again.

My boss said, "Well, if you’re such a great designer,

why aren’t you doing anything?"

And a week later, I quit and I was like,

"You know what, you’re right."

Can you believe these mother [bleep]

made me unload their luggage? [laughs]

[Heidi] Hello, everybody. Welcome.

-[all] Hi. -[Heidi] You’re in New York.

Twelve of you, the cream of the crop.

-Thank you. -[Heidi] We looked

at hundreds of people and you guys made it.

So, I wanna welcome you guys to your new home.

This is the Atlas New York Apartment.

You guys are gonna be staying here for a while.

Some longer than others.

I’m gonna give you guys your keys, and then later,

I’m gonna meet you at Parsons School of Design.

All right. Let’s go, let’s go.

[upbeat music playing]

-Wow. -Cute.

[woman] Oh.

[Alexandra] Ever since I was a young girl,

I always loved fashion.

So, I went to school for it and now

I have my own line selling in different boutiques.

People a lot of times underestimate me

and how intelligent I am.

[Kara] I’m a costume designer.

The thing I love about costume designing

is designing for different artists.

And Queen Latifah was one of them.

On the movie set, people always say,

"Why don’t you have your line out there?"

So, this has been like a dream of mine

that I’ve always wanted to have my own line.

-Twenty-eight. -Cheers, everybody.

Cheers.

[Starr] Currently, I’m a lawyer in a prominent law firm

but I love fashion design and it just--

it makes me so happy to do it.

The struggle is that I have so much to lose

and so much invested in law already,

but at the same time I’d also like to be

a really successful fashion designer.

[Vanessa] Hi. Can you look after me?

I’m so unhealthy. I’m the fattest one.

I’m sharing my living space with Ms. Venezuela,

Audrey Hepburn, and Ms. Caribbean.

So, they’re absolute babes, and then there’s me.

The past 10 years of my life

have been completely dedicated to starting a small fashion

design business based in Houston.

It’s been incredibly difficult.

I definitely want my clothes to be more readily available

throughout America.

-Wow. -Oh my gosh.

Ooh, la, la. This place is fancy.

See, I could’ve brought my daughter with me.

I am married and I have a five-year-old daughter.

I have a small business in a small town in Virginia.

There is no way I would have access to the parts

of the industry that Project Runway

is going to afford me.

I feel like because I am a mom,

the kitchen is really important.

If we get too stressed out and we don’t eat correctly,

like, good food and healthy food,

we’re not gonna produce what we know we can.

Number one, we have to take care of each other.

We have to have our core four that we watch out for.

[Robert] Backing up.

[Wendy] Because you cannot care about eleven other people

but you can care about three.

-We will, yes. -[Robert] Wendy’s great.

I like to call her mom because she treats us like,

uh, we’re her kids, which is great.

I got into fashion through my mother.

She owned a hair salon, you know,

in front of me was, you know, basically fashion.

My inspiration basically cars.

Uh, a sports car is like a woman, because,

um, they’re both sleek, sexy, and extremely dangerous.

[Daniel] Here it is, people. Here it is.

This is great.

[Kevin] I’ve been designing for 12 years.

I got into it because it’s a family business.

My parents didn’t want me to get into the fashion business

because the apparel business is very tough.

My goal is to be a great American designer.

[Jay] All right. Can we establish something?

Who smokes, who doesn’t?

I don’t smoke. You smoke?

-Who smokes? -[Jay] Fashion designers smoke.

Didn’t you get this newsletter?

-[Kevin] I didn’t know that. -Honestly.

[Daniel] And I’m from LA. We do ten.

I want the world to see what I could offer

to the fashion industry.

In 1999, I launched my first collection.

Well, actually, my first and only collection.

But my father, uh, actually got two strokes,

so I had to basically take over the family business.

It’s a wedding chapel in Los Angeles actually.

Secret of life.

Now, he’s in excellent health and I’m able now

to follow my bliss again this year.

What time did Heidi say we had to meet her?

I don’t know. I was just staring

at her face the whole time.

[upbeat music playing]

[Heidi] We are at Parsons School of Design.

This will be your working space and this is Tim Gunn.

He’s the head of the fashion program here.

He will take care of you,

but he will not solve your problems.

[Tim] Welcome, everyone.

I’m very proud to have you here at Parsons.

You will be working in the shadow

of many illustrious alumni including Donna Karan,

Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodriguez, Tom Ford.

Some of you, certainly one of you will be joining

that distinguished company at the end

of the challenges of Project Runway.

So, welcome. We’re thrilled to have you here.

Let’s have a look.

This is where the magic happens.

The fact that it’s just being held at Parsons is huge,

and you do think your name could be listed

next to other great designers

that have come from here.

[Heidi] Okay, everyone. This is your workspace.

Over here, you’ll find the Banana Republic

accessories wall.

And in the corner are ba*ls of cotton,

the official fabric of Project Runway.

Okay. Let’s go downstairs. Let’s see the runway.

Let’s take a look where your fate will be decided.

Designers, this is where the judging

and elimination will take place.

The first challenge is about innovation

and we will judge you on that.

I want you to design a sexy, glamorous dress

for a night out in town.

Tim will take you to a store

where all the famous designers go.

And you cannot start work on this challenge

until your shopping trip tomorrow.

This is where your garments will be shown off.

And they will be shown off by beautiful models.

Models are very crucial because a model

can make or break your outfit.

So, let’s bring out the models.

Allison, Audrey, Erin...

[Austin] The models, you know, sell the dress.

You know, you need a girl who is as passionate

about winning as you are.

[Heidi] I will choose your names randomly,

and then you can choose your model.

-Austin. -Olga.

-Robert. -[Robert] I pick Melissa.

-Alexandra. -[Alexandra] Julia.

I picked my model Julia because she’s the tallest

and I think the taller the better.

-Vanessa. -I choose Joy.

[Heidi] Joy it is.

-Mario. -Erin.

Kara.

Morgan.

Next one is Kevin.

Martinique.

[cheering]

-[Heidi] Daniel. -Mary, you’re hired.

[laughter]

-[Heidi] Wendy. -Heidi.

-[Heidi] Yes? -I choose Josey Anne.

-[Heidi] Okay. -Yes.

[Starr] I think I know who I choose.

[indistinct chatter]

You’re with Starr.

-Thanks. -Thank you.

[applause]

[Starr] I had a couple of first choices

but Audrey, she’s a gorgeous girl

and I think she’s gonna look really great.

You will have the chance to see our models

very soon again and that will be tonight,

because I’m gonna host a little party

for you guys tonight.

I thought it was a good idea to start it off nice.

[applause]

So you guys can relax a little bit tonight

and have some fun.

Because from now on, it will get tough.

[upbeat music playing]

[indistinct chatter]

[Wendy] You have the most gorgeous hair.

Boy, look at you.

All the models were there and it was really,

uh, all of the designers’ first chance to really interact

with the models that they had chosen.

Yeah, how did you know all of this? Yeah.

Oh, okay.

I can’t wait until the b*tch moments start coming out.

It’s gonna be my favorite to be like--

Oh, there will be some b*tch moment--

--"This b*tch has lost her mind."

That b*tch is crazy.

Yeah.

[Mario] The models, they’re just all breathtaking to me.

I think they’re all really beautiful girls,

especially Olga.

That chick is like sex on legs. She’s hot.

The designers wanna see the girls walk, so yeah,

why don’t we, right?

[upbeat music playing]

Wow, look at that walk. Wow.

[Daniel] All I care about is taking this prize home.

I mean, the other contestants, I’d love to chum it up

with all of them, you know, and stay laughing with them

all the time, but I felt that that was gonna distract me.

[Jay] Daniel is not too social.

He’s pretty calculated, I think, as far as why he’s here.

-[woman] Heidi. -[woman] Heidi.

[cheering]

Go, Heidi. Go, Heidi.

[Heidi] To Project Runway. To Project Runway.

[cheering]

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway.

[Tim] Are you ready for your first challenge?

This is where we’re going to shop.

[man] Oh my God.

[Wendy] For the first time, I felt fear.

[upbeat music playing]

[Wendy] We met Tim in the morning and he said,

"Let’s go shopping."

[Jay] Our first challenge was to design

something glamorous and sexy for a night out on the town.

[Austin] We sort of headed in the direction

of the garment district fabric stores

and we kept going uptown.

[Kara] I was asking people who lived in New York,

I’m like, have you ever been to any fabric stores up here?

[Tim] This is our destination.

-[Jay] The supermarket? -[Tim] Indeed.

[Wendy] We show up at this grocery store

and for the first time, I felt fear.

[Alexandra] I thought we were gonna be at this,

like, amazing fabric store

with all these, like, couture fabrics.

Welcome to Gristedes,

the site of your first challenge.

In Heidi’s words yesterday,

this challenge is about creating a glamorous outfit

for evening and these are your supplies.

Everything that you will use to design and fabricate

this challenge must be purchased here.

We’re not making any other stops.

This is why we’re calling this challenge innovation.

You must innovate.

So, be as unconventional as you can be

in your thinking and make it work here.

You will each have $50 in this envelope

and you will have one hour.

Okay, show us what you’ve got.

I shop every day of my life.

I’ve never approached a grocery store with fear.

I don’t know what to do.

[rock music playing]

Crazy though.

[Vanessa] I went off around the supermarket

with an open mind, ruling out the obvious.

No melons or anything that might go soggy.

[Jay] Why do they make, like, home interior stuff

in this [bleep] colors.

I’m done. This is what I’m getting.

This is all I need.

Maybe if I have money left over, I’ll get some extra of this,

just in case.

But, um, yeah, I already have the whole thing planned out.

[woman] What’s the Q-Tips for?

Um, for me. I didn’t bring any.

I believe that all these materials

have their own beautiful spiritual quality.

Jesus, what are we gonna do?

Do you have any ribbon?

[Kara] I took every last drop of ribbon.

I know some of the people are looking for them

but I just took everything.

[Austin] My main ingredient are the corn husks,

because if you think about it, it’s really like nature’s fabric

because it’s like a fiber,

even how it’s like a weft and a warp to it almost.

[Nora] I saw this lounge chair up there and I said,

oh, my God, that blue lounge chair is freaking fabulous.

Thank you.

How much are these a piece, do you know?

[man] $4.99.

[Starr] I got some silver sparkly paper

and I was like, oh, that’s awesome.

I can totally use that.

And then, I started looking around for things

that would kind of coordinate with it.

Project Runway, you have five minutes.

[Jay] Attention runway shoppers.

I’m having a nervous breakdown.

[Tim] Project Runway, this is it.

Checkout.

You have $50.50.

Fifty cents? I need 50 cents.

Can I break this in half, and then pay for half of it?

[Daniel] I’m a serious designer and I like serious challenges.

This design project, I feel is gonna be no sweat.

[Tim] Designers, you have from now until midnight tonight.

Tomorrow, you’ll have a few hours

before the runway judging.

Innovate and go for it, okay?

[Vanessa] Okay. My fish is getting stinky.

Do you have a freezer here?

It’s going to--yes, I got fish.

[laughing]

[Alexandra] I grabbed a bunch of like brown pantyhose

and brown socks, and I’m gonna do

a really pretty dress with them.

[Robert] I picked some interesting things.

I mean, I picked mop heads, which I’m gonna plan

to make like a hula skirt.

And I bought falafel bread to make like a corset top.

[Austin] I was basically freaking out,

I’m like, oh, no, what am I gonna do?

I have nothing but, like, corn husks and,

like, a potato chip bag.

This is the very first competition,

I’m gonna, like, screw it for myself.

[Wendy] My idea was to make this carnivale theme.

I’m really using extremely bizarre materials.

I don’t know how I’m actually gonna make it.

There. Done.

[Robert] And Mario, shower curtain

[makes sound] and I’m done.

I’m done already.

Yeah, I just like draped it around,

like tied it together and that’s it.

-It’s like whatever. -[Kevin] Come on.

You have a lot of time still.

[Kara] Mario is a rebel here.

He’s just, I don’t care, I’m doing this.

I’m gonna wrap the fabric.

We were all working, Mario is like sitting

on the table, sleeping, taking cigarette breaks.

He doesn’t care. That’s his style.

[Daniel] He’s very amateurish with no true direction

and no sense of purpose or style.

[Wendy] Is Mario smarter than me because he bought

a shower curtain and he made it in 15 minutes?

Or is he looking for

the easy way out?

[Jay moans]

What is wrong with you?

Don’t try this at home, folks.

It takes trained professionals to take--

to take one inch strips of tinfoil and bind a jacket.

[Jay] Daniel’s approach is so, like, Bob Barker.

What do we have next?

We have a fashion challenge

and it’s gonna be great.

Like, ugh, it just makes me, like, wanna leave the room.

[Mario] So, what’s going on with your design?

Creatively, I’m fine.

But mentally, man, are you feeling

the cutthroat-ness of it in there, or--

Yeah.

It’s not pushing through because it’s not fabric.

I’ve been, like, tugging it through.

[Austin] Half the day had been spent fussing

with this weaving. I know I’m a good designer

and I can do it but am I an idiot

for picking these, like, corn husks?

[Mario] Now, to keep that together,

are you just gonna use like clear tape on one side?

[Austin] I might just totally redo this.

-[Wendy] Austin-- -[Mario] No, Austin.

You just like spent hours on it.

I know but it doesn’t look good.

[Mario] Okay. You know why?

You just don’t like it right now because, look,

you got so much [bleep] on it and it’s not clean.

Yeah, but first of all, I’d have to,

like, weave an even bigger piece to make a whole bodice.

I do tend to, like, get myself into these,

like, over-elaborate projects and end up like,

you know, screwing myself in the end.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway.

-Today is the D-Day. -I know.

Today’s the funeral.

[Kara] Everybody else’s model is dressed

and my model is not here.

What if she doesn’t come?

Go to the street and go get a model.

[Daniel] We were given a challenge to make

a sexy outfit for a night on the town.

I used butcher paper for the jacket

and it was a great color.

And it reminded me of a--

of a suede or even like a taffeta.

I felt that it is stylish compared to Starr.

I don’t think that she has enough experience

as designer to realize that you need style.

[Starr] I’m really terrified that I’m gonna be the one

to go home just because my dress is really gaudy

and I’m feeling like it’s pretty disgusting.

[Tim] How is everyone? I came back.

[Kara] Hi.

-How are you doing? -Good.

What’s happening with the bust part?

Um, well, right here, it’s gonna be painted.

Oh.

[Kara] Like that’s why I got this.

-[Tim] On the model? -Yes.

-[Tim] Okay. -On the model.

-Does she know? -No.

[Tim laughing]

What’s going on, Vanessa?

[Vanessa] I’ve got so excited about putting

on this black stuff everywhere

that I kinda lost the shape.

[Tim] Does it need to be full length?

[Vanessa] No, but I just--I’ve done

all this work on it.

[Tim] I know. But sometimes you have to let it go.

[Vanessa] My heart just started thudding.

I really just didn’t want to look stupid on the runway.

Maybe, I’ll make some little flowers or something.

You still have a lot of work to do.

I know. Go on. Go see the next person.

-Let me finish. -Okay.

[dramatic music playing]

Daniel, okay. You’ve made great progress.

Thank you, Tim.

-I, uh... -Great progress.

I’m imbuing the spirits

of Picasso and Marcel Duchamp.

My theory is that anyone can be elegant at any time

if they just apply themselves,

and basically applying themselves,

they need to stop thinking,

find the purity in the-- in the design and the garment.

[Tim] There’s a seduction about Daniel.

When you’re within about three feet of him,

you get into his orbit and you believe,

but then when you step back and you look at what he’s done,

you ask yourself, what is that?

Is this looking too much like butcher paper?

[Daniel] It is butcher paper, it can’t be helped.

So, I hate to cut this short, Tim,

but I got to get back to it.

-Thank you so much. -All right.

[Robert] I love how Daniel just brushed Tim off

saying that, "Listen, Tim, I got to get back to work, man.

You know, you-- I’m sorry, you know,

you’re wasting my time."

Tim was leaving, kind of, like, scratching his head,

like, what just--I mean, I think he was--

he was in shock himself, too.

[Austin] Luckily tomorrow, we have a couple hours,

which is I think just the amount of time

I’ll need to pull it all together.

[Starr] Since I’ve been here,

I’ve had this opportunity

to just really think about

what I’m doing with my life.

I mean, I certainly have a lot of abilities as a lawyer,

but I’m learning so much

and really would like to stay as long as possible.

I don’t know.

[Wendy] I know someone is going home today.

It makes me very, very sad.

Notice how I’m wearing all black?

Yeah.

Today is the D day.

-I know. -Today’s the funeral.

We’ll be going home in a garment bag.

Not us.

[Tim] Okay, everyone, we have, um,

exactly two hours to achieve a lot.

We’re going to be bringing your models in.

You’re going to be doing a fitting with the model.

And then, you’re going to be tweaking, and refining,

and doing whatever you need to do to your garment.

Your models will go

to the L’Oreal hair and makeup rooms

to get prepped for the show, okay?

Great.

The morning of was pretty hectic.

Everybody’s running around doing their own thing.

It’s a lot of pressure.

I’m not going home today.

-You wanna go home? -No.

You don’t wanna go home, do you?

-No. -We ain’t going home.

[Tim] Austin having not refrigerated this produce,

uh, the corn husk had shrunk.

They were now corn chips.

At least, there isn’t any additional shrinkage.

[Austin makes sound]

I was definitely worried.

I had a lot of things to work out.

I just didn’t know how I was going to finish it.

-How are you feeling? -That feels fine, yeah.

It’s coming. It’s coming.

-It’s coming. -Oh, f*ck.

Everybody’s been working with their models

for about half an hour now, and my model is not here.

She’s being hand-painted,

so I need time to do the hand painting.

I was really worried because I didn’t know

if I was gonna have a model.

If she doesn’t come--

Go to the street and go get a model, yeah.

[Vanessa] I think that would be the most genius thing to do,

-I think. -[Jay] Pick a girl.

-Go for it. -I’ll be back.

[intense music playing]

[Kara] I didn’t know if I was going to have a model.

You know, they’re trying to call Morgan.

They just couldn’t reach her.

I don’t know really what I’m doing.

Very cute.

Excuse me.

Have you ever thought of modeling?

No, I haven’t.

Heidi Klum is gonna be there.

Do you know who Heidi Klum is, the supermodel?

Yeah, I do.

What do you think?

My mother is out of town and she usually wakes me up.

-Morgan? -Yeah.

-This is really bad. -I know.

She’s out on the street, literally looking for a model.

[Daniel] It’s not what I envisioned.

He has an endearing story,

he is playing to the cameras, I think.

One day you’re in, and the next day you’re out.

Today, one designer will be selected

as the winner of this challenge,

and one of you will be out.

This week’s challenge was about innovation,

and we will judge you on your use of unconventional materials.

Now, let’s meet the judges.

We have Michael Kors,

who’s one of the most influential designers

in America.

Nina Garcia is the fashion director

for the top selling Elle magazine.

Our guest judge for today is Patricia Field.

We all know her from dressing the beautiful girls

on Sex and the City.

We will be scoring your designs as they come down the runway.

Let’s start the show.

[upbeat music playing]

[Austin] My corn dress

started to shrivel and dry up,

and it didn’t look very good.

I am nervous that I may be eliminated.

[Wendy] The stakes for me are huge

because if I do well,

I am gonna have a better chance of realizing my dream

of being a real fashion designr

who can really deliver the goods on all levels.

[Starr] I actually didn’t watch the judges

when my model walked, so I have no idea

how they responded to it.

I didn’t have any confidence in myself or in my design.

[Jay] If these people remotely have an eye for creativity,

then they won’t eliminate me.

[Kara] When it comes down to it,

it’s who can walk the best

and Morgan can walk.

Regardless if she’s late, or tragic,

or whatever is going on in her life, she can walk.

[Nora] I’m not out to flash the judges.

I wanna wow them with great concept design.

You know, I’m not like glitter on the runway.

[Daniel] I had innovation in the cut of the jacket

and innovation in tailoring the butcher paper.

I know the designs of Michael Kors.

I read Elle magazine a lot.

I know what they’re looking for.

[Mario] I feel really confident with the dress.

It’s the look that I wanted to go for

and seriously, I don’t care if I get eliminated.

I don’t compromise my art.

[cheers and applause]

I wanna ask all 12 designers to please come on the stage.

[tense music playing]

We’ve tallied your scores.

so I was in that group

and I’m like, ah [bleep] it.

[Heidi] None of you are out.

Your scores have qualified you

to stay in for the next challenge.

[Kara] When they said, you know,

you’re safe for the next round,

you couldn’t see it but I just wanna jump off the stage

and say--you know, just scream.

[Heidi] The six of you that remain

had the highest and the lowest scores.

We will ask you questions on your designs.

The judges will deliberate

and one of you will be named the winner.

The winner will have immunity for the next challenge

and cannot be eliminated next week,

and one of you will be out.

[Austin] I’m just so nervous I can’t even think.

[Wendy] There I was,

probably in the three of the worst category.

[Starr] Just the thought of being the first one sent home

really was horrible.

[tense music playing]

[Heidi] The six of you

represent the best and the worst.

Let’s bring back your models.

Patricia, do you want to start?

[Patricia] Austin, you know, your corn dress.

Did you boil the corn leaves

and sculpt them from a soft condition?

Basically, I shucked all the fresh corn

and I put it together fresh.

It dried out.

[Austin] I’m hoping, I’m praying

the judges will take into consideration

that I used something organic.

[Nina] Wendy, what were you thinking?

Because I see very little clothes.

Um, I met my model

and she said she was from Brazil.

All right, I get it. So, you were going to Rio?

I just wish I would have seen more clothes.

And Vanessa, I wanted to ask you about your inspiration.

[Vanessa] My inspiration was Cajun

but it doesn’t look very Cajun,

because it’s supposed to have, uh, mini lobsters.

-What are they called? -[Michael] Crawfish, crawfish.

Crawfish, right. And they were

going to be trapped in the net,

but it really didn’t need them.

[Michael] Uh, do you wear black a lot?

-[Vanessa] I love black. -[Michael] Yeah?

All women love black.

[Michael] You know, even though I’m sitting here wearing black,

you’re wearing black, I would have loved

to have seen more color.

Somehow, the crawfish,

I have a feeling would have not smelled fabulously,

but they really would have done something.

[Heidi] Daniel, can we see what is underneath the dress?

Please do.

This jacket, I made a pattern first

because I only had a limited amount

of this butcher paper, which I got for free

from the store.

And it took me a long time

to make this binding, which is a tin foil,

and, uh, I tried to give it the best treatment that I could

for the amount of time that we had.

[Michael] Nora, I think you did an amazing job.

I think it’s interesting, It’s innovative.

And at the same time,

it’s actually, kind of, wearable.

Yeah, I think it’s great.

I think it’s really--it’s terrific.

[Heidi] We have not heard so much about yours, Starr.

Do you wanna explain a little bit

what you were thinking?

My initial inspiration was an ironing board cover,

um, which is this part here,

and I liked the color.

And then, I really like this wrapping paper,

especially when it’s crinkled.

Um...

I don’t really know how wearable it is.

I wanna ask all the designers and models

to please leave the stage.

I’m gonna have a little chat with my judges.

What’s the worst thing?

What are you worried about the most?

Going home.

[Vanessa] Going home?

You’re not gonna go home.

[Patricia] A lot of them,

they started adding things

onto things, onto things.

-It was like one of these... -Yeah, rather than one concept.

[Patricia] Exactly.

[Michael] The bikini,

-the candy. -[Nina] Yes. Yes.

[Michael] There were no clothes.

-[Nina] There was no cloths. -[Patricia] That’s true.

That’s my pet peeve, there are no clothes.

-[Patricia] But it was happy. -When I got to Daniel,

I’m just like, oh, my God,

the garbage bag couture again?

[Patricia] It was like, what’s the easiest thing,

and boring thing I could do.

I didn’t like Starr’s, either.

I think it was, like, totally expected.

-Get some tin foil-- -[Michael] Tin foil

and make a party dress.

[Patricia] is like the garbage bag dress.

[tense music playing]

[Heidi] In fashion, it’s all about

what’s in and what’s out.

And we have made our decision.

Vanessa, you’re in.

You can leave the runway.

Nora, you’re in.

Wendy, you’re in.

You can leave the runway.

There are three of you left,

one of you will be the winner

and one of you will be out.

But the winner is Austin.

To choose cornhusks, you showed true innovation.
