[Heidi] The winner of Project Runway will receive

a spread in ELLE magazine,

a mentorship with INC International Concepts Design,

and $100,000 to start their own line

So, in our last challenge,

we chose the models for you.

This time you get to pick.

[Heidi] She will tell you

about your next challenge.

I will be competing

at the 55th Annual Miss Universe pageant

in L.A. this year.

Evening gown is a very, very important part

of the competition.

It counts for 1/3 of the score.

For your next challenge,

one of you will design my gown.

[designer] Oh, my gosh. That is so cool.

[cheers and applause]

[Kayne] I was so freaking excited,

because this is my main livelihood and career--

designing pageant gowns.

[Keith] I'm really excited that Miss USA

is actually going to pick one of our dresses.

And it's going to be viewed by, like,

millions and millions of people

in 80 some odd countries.

That's a pretty big challenge.

Why don't you change?

And you guys meet Tara and Tim in the workroom.

-Okay. -Bye!

I am delighted to welcome

Miss USA, Tara Connor

for whom, as Heidi told you,

you will be designing an evening gown.

So this is a huge deal.

Your design could mean the difference

between Tara winning and losing.

And Tara, we'd love to have you talk to the designers

about what you look for in a pageant gown.

Okay. I'm the second shortest girl

in the pageant this year.

So I'm gonna need a gown

that's going to elongate me.

Earth tones maybe,

um, monochromatic tones.

Try to stay away from white.

You know, I don't want anything too plunging.

I don't want them to see this.

I want them to see me.

Designers, there is one more thing.

[Vincent] Naturally.

You will be working in teams of two.

I've never done a gown before.

What I'm hoping is that

I get paired with somebody

who has excellent construction skills like Kayne.

You will spend the next 30 minutes sketching

in order to prepare to pitch to Tara.

Tara will pick seven of you

to move forward with your designs.

Okay? So you have 30 minutes.

Use that time well.

[indistinct chatter]

[Jeffrey] I'm a little nervous about the fact

that this is "a pageant dress."

Only because the word pageant to me

has weird connotations

you know, i.e. JonBenet Ramsey.

And I don't know that world.

[Malan] In a pageant, you need to stand out.

And so I wanted something that would,

sort of, give her the illusion of having

a really, really beautiful hourglass.

And also give her the illusion of being incredibly tall.

[Kayne] I think Angela definitely wanted

to be on my team because...

she kept coming over during our 30 minutes of sketching time

and, like, bugging me.

[Kayne] She thought I was a shoe-in to win.

I'm not looking at it that way at all.

[Jeffrey] Angela was, uh...

just sort of sussing people out.

She was just looking for a free ride.

Designers, your time is up.

We're going to start with our pitches to Tara.

And we're going to start with Bradley.

All right!

I wanna do strapping on the back.

-[Tara] Okay. -[Bradley] Right? And then

with some fullness and some ruffles right there.

I'm an architect actually.

Some of my drawings are kind of

very architectural and plan-like.

This is kinda goddess

-and Grecian-inspired. -[Tara] Mm-hmm.

This whole asymmetric shoulder

with a twisted strap.

[Jeffrey] What's gonna be revealed

is gonna be your strong warrior structure.

-Totally fitted here. -Okay.

Fitted, fitted, fitted. Totally fitted,

-even in here. -Mm-hmm.

And I wanna see your legs.

I think your legs are so important.

-They're gorgeous. -Okay.

Very simple, clean,

and elegant in the front.

Keep you long, keep you lean and tall.

I sketch very loose.

Very free.

When you walk out on that stage, it's like...

"Oh, my God."

Oh, my gosh, I'm gonna talk a million miles a minute,

because I have so much to say to you.

I love you. I watched the pageant.

I am way into pageants. Blah-blah-blah.

Two of my sisters did pageants, so I know a lot about them.

Anyway, the line of your dress...

starts higher, and it's a longer line.

And it also frames your beautiful face.

'Cause you're freaking gorgeous. It's about you.

You need to feel like a million bucks.

-Okay. -Love ya. Mean it.

-And have a good day. -Okay.

Think J-Lo at the Oscars when she came on the stage,

and those panels kind of opened up.

My design philosophy is very much about

the silhouette of a woman's body and the shape and form.

A very fitted, you know, kind of corseted top.

-Mm-hmm. -Um, With halter straps

that go around your neck.

Really, I would like five different

layers of material.

Um, I'm going to ask you questions.

I don't sketch.

How do you feel about empire waist?

-Um... -[Angela] No. Okay.

that's all I need to know.

Um, also, I'm thinking gloves.

What do you feel about that?

-Probably not. -Okay.

[Tim] Tara has made her decisions.

-Tara? -I have.

The first team leader that I've chosen is Keith.

I love the idea of the line and the design.

Our next one is Uli.

I love your idea of the different layers of the chiffon

and how it would flow onstage.

I think that would look very, very pretty.

Vincent.

You really stood out to me.

I like it that you were trying to...

show me, not the dress.

Laura. The thing that stood out with me

was you really considered

how it was gonna look on the stage

with the lights and with the different material

that you were thinking about going with.

Malan.

I loved the idea of the corset,

making it kinda curvy looking.

Our next one is...

Jeffrey.

I'm glad that you tapped in

that I'm a strong, independent female.

Okay. And last but not least...

Kayne.

I loved the idea of making, like,

the jewelry type of look.

And the way that it's all gonna flow together.

Plus, I love that you're a pageant freak.

I'm very, very excited to see how

the presentation's gonna be.

that you're teamed up with the right person.

You know, I can't hold people's hands.

Bradley's aesthetic is totally different from mine.

[Tim] Now that your teams are assembled,

you have two days for this challenge.

You have a $300 budget.

[designers] Whoo!

And we're going shopping

with that $300 right now.

[upbeat music playing]

[designer] Let me grab the other fabric.

This has a bit more gold in it.

I think it's gonna be better.

This competition's actually pretty exciting,

because evening gowns

are what I do best.

I felt like the warm tones of the gold and the brown

would kind of give her, like, a luminescent quality.

[Robert] See, that's very soft and pretty.

She wanted something kinda earth-toned, she said.

But I got an iridescent organza.

And it's gorgeous.

So hopefully, she'll love the end product.

This definitely brings out the more purple.

I don't understand Kayne at all, what he's thinking.

Unless sherbet has suddenly become an earth tone,

and not an ice cream.

I'm not sure what he's gonna do to explain away that.

Go with that. Do you have that?

Now, there was another thing--

That's all right.

We could walk out of here

without fabric. That's all I'm saying.

We are not gonna walk outta here without fabric.

Well, we could if we don't make a decision.

[Vincent] We are not.

Angela kept saying to me,

"We only have T-minus six minutes, T-minus five."

And I said, "Please, you know, let's stop that."

Wait. Slow down all over. I don't wanna--

Let me just look one more--one more line. I don't need to--

She was nervous.

You know, I can't hold people's hands.

[Angela] I'm freaking out, because Vincent

is the team leader.

And I am not inspired

by his vision at all.

So right now, I'm feeling worried.

Everybody, time is up.

[Jeffrey] All right.

[upbeat music playing]

Well, I'm gonna keep this pattern. So when I go home,

I can do a little something something.

[Robert] Exactly.

Working together is like a comedy show.

'Cause we're both-- We crack each other up.

Do you wanna look like Miss Universe?

We'll do it for you in... fuchsia!

If we do something strapless,

I can see it at the waist.

[Laura] I chose Michael, because...

I really thought

that he would honestly question

what I normally do.

Okay.

[Bonnie] We're all talking about, you know,

Is this gonna be a one-person elimination?

Is it gonna be two?

I think it's gonna be one person.

So, I hope,

'cause it would be a bummer

to lose two people at this point.

[laughing]

[Angela] Hey, Vincent, do you want me to help drape the skirt?

[Vincent] Um, just hang.

I felt a little bit awkward about...

not being able to give her work

at whatever time,

but I knew I had to get something done.

[Angela] Is there anything you want me to do?

[Vincent] No.

[Angela] I was sitting there, and I was looking around.

And everybody is working together.

And I was like,

"What is going on here?"

Like, there was no opportunity

for me to be part of the process.

Angela.

It's gonna be elegant.

It's gonna have a certain elegance to it.

-Yeah. -Right?

-It will, trust me. -Yeah.

Trust me. Trust me.

[Keith] I think that Bradley might've been worried,

because I have immunity that I wouldn't care

and then it would mess him up.

But, like...

I would think that he would know after what I--

my last challenge that I'm kind of, like, good.

So what's he worried about?

It will not be the end of you, this dress.

The thing is that the best way to go about something like this

-is just to be really organized. -Yeah.

And if you're organized, then you don't have to worry

about all the other bull[bleep].

[Katherine] I'm very happy that Malan picked me as a partner.

He's had so much experience with gowns,

and he really knows the structure.

So it's helped a lot to learn that.

-It's just the right length. -Yeah.

[Malan] I never went to school. I taught myself fashion

without having really any support from anyone.

When I was about 13,

I had a stack of sketches that I drew.

And when I went to my mother

and I showed her the sketches,

she looked through the first few pages,

and then she threw them on the floor

and said that they would never amount to anything

and that I should never do that again.

Project Runway will give me a chance...

to show her.

[upbeat music playing]

I'm very happy, yes. That's exactly what I want.

-Right here. -[Asian accent] I so happy.

I so happy I almost cry.

Vincent, I'm really concerned,

because I made a dress like this

when I was in college.

Right now, I can't discuss that,

because I've gotta figure out

how to drape this back.

Why don't you cut that like that?

Angela was a little bit worried

about what we were trying to achieve.

It got annoying, because that's not her call.

I'm the team leader. And it's my call.

Okay, listen, you have to move three feet away from me.

Throughout the day, I kept getting more nervous

about our garment.

Here it's just like, "How much can I fit?"

[Malan] I know, but that's what I want.

ruched really tight like that.

[Katherine] The way it was turning out,

it just looked heavy.

And so no woman's gonna see that

on the runway and wanna wear it.

If and when that gets called out--

Mm-hmm?

-You get to defend it. -[Malan] Okay.

This cannot be here.

It will look like she's pooping.

I'm not digging this at all.

Robert, we bought 4 million

gross of rhinestones.

We will put them on till our fingernails bleed.

She's a beauty queen, not a disco ball.

Whatever you do, don't say that on the runway,

that we ran out of time.

-Well, Angela-- -Because that's--

Angela, sweetheart, you already don't want

responsibility for being any part of this dress with me.

So you're gonna say, if anything,

that you had no responsibility there.

So you--if this dress wins tomorrow,

you don't want any responsibility.

[Angela] Vincent is 100%

completely behind the dress.

I've seen him defend crap on the runway before.

Honestly, I think

that we are gonna be in the bottom three.

I'm gonna defend myself

as much as possible.

Like, it's just, the words are gonna come right out.

[Keith] Angela?

She is transparent

as a [bleep] glass window.

[Vincent] Yeah, no, he's right.

She's gonna knife me

in the back in a heartbeat.

She'll smile up front, and she'll put a knife in my back.

I'm about to send in the models.

So you have two hours to send them

to the TRESemmé hair salon,

to the L'Oréal Paris makeup room,

and to fit them and prep them for the runway.

My garment just fit my model perfect.

So I could not be more happy

with my work on this challenge.

Oh, you look gorgeous, sister.

[designer] It looks great on you.

It looks very nice on you.

Fitting our model before the show

was nerve-wracking.

The length of the gown

was probably about half a foot too short.

I don't want to go home when it's not my design.

Angela, do we have seven minutes or a little bit more?

[Angela] Yeah, we have--

Could you find out for sure, dear?

-It's real important. -[Angela] It's 12:15.

No--when we have to stop and go down?

[Angela] Yes, that's what they said.

You know, the whole time

with the gown, you didn't help me.

-You absolutely cannot do that. -[Vincent] I know.

-Because you know why? -I offered to help you

To--to get mad, like, oh, to stoop so low.

[Laura] I'm really looking for more "red carpet"

than "pageant."

Like, a little volume. Sort of movie star.

[designer] Nice. That's looking good.

[Tim] Okay, designers, models.

[Malan] I was really, really concerned about the skirt.

It was too short. It was just--

it was too late. We didn't have enough time.

We had to leave it.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway...

What happened here?

+This was the nightmare of my life.

Hello.

[all] Hi.

Welcome to the runway.

As you know, in fashion, one day you're in,

and the next day,

you're out.

For this challenge, we asked you to work

in teams of two

to create an evening gown

for Miss USA, Tara Conner.

We gave you $300

and two days to put it together.

Tara will wear

the winning look in the Miss Universe Pageant.

And she is putting

her future in your hands.

So we better be wowed by what you've done.

Let's meet the judges.

Sitting in for Michael Kors,

we have world-renowned fashion designer Vera Wang.

Nina Garcia, fashion director of ELLE magazine.

And your client.

Miss USA, Tara Conner.

We will score your designs

as they come down the runway.

And Tara will pick the winner.

Let's start the show.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jeffrey] When I saw my dress come down the runway,

I was totally excited.

I couldn't stop looking at the beautifully grotesque way

that the skirt was draped.

I mean, it turned out exactly the way

I wanted it to turn out.

[Alison] I think if we had two weeks,

we could make a really gorgeous dress.

But it--the fact that it was so complicated

and the time was so little,

the end result wasn't exactly

what I thought it would be.

[Keith] The design that I pitched to Tara

is exactly what we made.

Miss USA loved the sketch,

so she'll love the dress, hopefully.

[Bradley] I'm not worried about being eliminated.

And I think it turned out very, very nice.

[upbeat music playing]

[Vincent] When my dress came down the runway,

I felt really, really good.

I got my point of view across.

[Angela] Vincent was very difficult to work with.

That was Vincent's dress.

Not Vincent and Angela's dress.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kayne] I feel really confident about my gown.

I've been to 462 million pageants.

And I've never seen a dress like it.

So I feel good about it.

[Robert] I felt really good about what we had finished

and accomplished and what the gown looked like.

It really felt like it had delivered

on what a beauty pageant winner would want.

[upbeat music playing]

[Malan] I've put my best foot forward.

I know what I've done is really good.

But we'll see what they say.

[Katherine] I wasn't happy with it at all.

But I did the best I could

with his design.

[funky techno music playing]

[Uli] I think it was really modern and clean

and sophisticated.

And the points Tara picked out--

they were definitely accomplished.

[Bonnie] I think it was really eye-catching and beautiful.

And it was very true to what Uli had pitched.

[upbeat music playing]

[Laura] My garment is very different.

The silhouette is much simpler.

I'm very proud of the dress.

But I think that Tara is the real judge here.

[Michael Knight] It was gorgeous.

If I don't say so myself,

I did a excellent job on the construction.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Heidi] We've scored your designs.

Will the following teams please step forward:

[Heidi] The four remaining teams

have the highest and the lowest scores.

One of you will be named the winner.

And, for this challenge, only one of you

will be going home.

[Heidi] I would like to start with Uli and Bonnie.

It's a beautiful gown. I love the way it flows.

[Uli] I thought really when she's walking,

it opens up.

And it makes her really soft and flowy.

[Heidi] I really like the way it is

-in the back. -I love the back of it.

'Cause I said I wanted something

with the back cut out of it.

[Heidi] How is your feeling on the dress, Bonnie?

[Bonnie] I loved it.

And I thought we really got along well.

I'm happy with it, so--

I think it's a very modern dress.

And I love the color.

I do love the color.

[Vera] I love the layering of the color.

-[Tara] Yes. -I think that's very unique.

I think they did very, very well.

[Heidi] Tara, how do you like Kayne and Robert's dress?

I love the sweetheart top.

My top at Miss USA was actually

a sweetheart top with straps.

The colors seemed different for me.

But the more I looked at it, the more I loved the color.

I thought this was earthy,

but with a little bit of color.

And onstage, like, I just want it for you at Miss Universe.

You've already won the state pageant.

You've already won the national pageant.

You're going to Miss Universe, for goodness' sakes.

So that's why I was like,

this was a perfect little meet in the middle.

[Nina] It's amazing that you took

the initiative to choose the color

that you thought was complementary to her.

And I had reservations about it being too much.

But Kayne convinced me.

And when I actually saw it all together,

I thought that he did a great job

of really seeing it through.

[Tara] You listened very well

to everything that I said, and it's--

then I--there's not a whole lot of bad things

I can say about this gown.

Malan and Katherine.

[Vera] The ruching is a lot of detail on one dress.

[Heidi] I love all that gathering and all that.

I think that's very modern, very cool.

I just--somethin' up there is not quite right.

There's, like, so much going on.

It's so poufy. One is bigger than the other.

[Tara] I was a bit confused on that as well

because, you know,

you can't tell where the action's going.

-[Heidi] Yeah. -What happened here

with this...bustier?

[Malan] Basically, when this was to be done for Tara,

it would be done much flatter.

But we built this up a little bit more

just to give her the illusion, like a theatrical illusion,

that she's a little bigger on top, as Tara is.

[Nina] And I think

Tara wanted to look less busty.

Not more busty.

[Heidi] And then something down there is not quite right.

-I don't know. -[Tara] It's not long enough.

The model-- her proportions-

actually, she's much, uh,

longer in the torso than any of the other models.

And I wasn't aware of that.

Well, it's always good to leave extra.

Yeah.

[Heidi] Katherine, what do you think of the design?

I--I went into this challenge with...

this is Malan's design.

In your team, if one of you would have to go,

who would it be?

I would have to say Malan.

I just don't wanna go home

when it wasn't my vision and my design.

Malan.

The design concept was my own.

Um...

I mean, it would have to be me.

[Heidi] Vincent and Angela.

Did you guys work well together?

The work that I decided to put into this

in the two days

was astronomical.

I had to rip this apart and--

for mistakes that she put in

and do it all myself.

Angela, what do you think of the dress?

I didn't like it. I thought it was too simple.

I thought it reminded me of a dress that I did

when I was in college.

[Nina] Can I see the back of that?

'Cause I thought this was

really beautiful in the back.

-[Heidi] The back is beautiful. -[Nina] It's very sweet.

Why, thank you so much.

I do think that the sleeve is, um,

you know, it's not easy to wear.

They're lookin' a little space cadet.

I think the idea is sophisticated, though.

And how minimal it is

does make it interesting.

It just didn't feel designer-y to me

or inspired or different.

I can't see this as being one that would stand out.

-And-- -[Tara] Actually,

I disagree with you.

I think the dress does stand out

because it is so different.

Like, I almost feel like maybe

you were trying to lead

when he was the leader.

[Vincent] I was the team leader.

And if someone says to you,

"I have no ideas about gowns,"

what would you do?

That's rough. That's rough stuff.

[Heidi] Vincent.

What she put me through

to make this dress happen--

it was horrific.

[Heidi] So Angela would go?

Oh, yes.

This was the nightmare of my life.

What do we think about Vincent and Angela?

Well, Vincent's dress,

it was very simple.

If we could just taper the sleeves a little,

that would make that gown.

I think that gown is classic.

What do you guys think about Angela

on her teamwork with Vincent?

That was out of line.

Part of this challenge was to work as a team.

She should've been able to work as a team, Angela.

It was design and teamwork.

It was terrible.

What do we think

about Uli and Bonnie?

Uli's? I liked Uli's.

It was the most modern dress.

It was young and hip and happening.

[Vera] Yes. The low back is sexy.

[Tara] She did listen because I did say

that I wanted a low back, and they listened to that.

That dress was perfectly beautiful.

What do we think about Kayne and Robert?

I like the detail on Kayne's dress, you know.

It wasn't too much. It was very elegant.

And it was very-- almost glitzy.

I love the crystals that are on it.

[Heidi] I mean, I can totally see you in that.

Walking in, you'd be like, "Whoa!"

Right.

It turned out pretty good.

How 'bout Malan and Katherine?

Yeah, I don't really know what happened to that one.

One of the things that I did tell them,

I want something that will show me.

When that girl was out there,

I didn't even see her.

[Nina] And then the bottom was--

And just thinking of that dress

in between all these girls.
