that I made it through five challenges thus far.

I'm just actually more motivated

now that I won a challenge,

that I wanna win another one.

My boy is gone.

Judging is very subjective.

It can go any way.

In-no-va-tion.

I just don't get it.

I did cash in my 401K and quit a job

to do Project Runway.

This is the riskiest thing that I've done to date.

But I have the talent and the construction ability

to make really great dresses.

So I think my chances to get to the final three

look good.

It's anti-stress.

Look at how much I've already used since I've been here.

I'm ready.

Let's go get our new challenge.

[Heidi] Okay, before I give you

your next challenge, let's bring out the winning

and the losing designer's models.

[tense music playing]

Michael, you were the winner of the last challenge.

So you have the option to switch models.

And your model was Nazri.

If you decide to stay with her, Katie will be out.

If you decide to swap, I will bring out

all the models for you to choose from.

I really enjoy working with Nazri,

so I'm definitely gonna keep her.

[Alison] All of us rolled our eyes at that.

I feel like I've been here for months

working constantly.

So the next few challenges

are going to be tough.

[Robert] Everyone's stressed and working hard.

So the thought of something being more difficult

feels absurd.

[Heidi] And you will find out

how tough tomorrow morning.

looking out the window trying to catch

any hints we could.

[Kayne] Wait, where are we?

[Alison] It was the morning time,

and I was sitting quietly,

humming the Sopranos song.

[Laura] I have no idea where we're going.

The weather's terrible.

New Jersey looks as awful as it ever did.

[Robert] We're there at this big, huge warehouse

in New Jersey,

which feels like we've just woken up

in some strange nightmare.

[Laura] We climbed up onto a loading dock.

Where are we?

[Laura] We're led to the front of this

huge, like, rolling garage door.

[Tim] We are in Newark, New Jersey.

And behind this door is the site of your new challenge.

We were all just, like, what?

Whoo.

[Alison] Oh, my God.

I really did not know what to think.

[tense music playing]

Yeah!

[laughter]

[Robert] Oh, my God.

[Kayne] There are mounds and mounds,

like, mountains of recyclable materials everywhere.

[Laura] Yay.

[Robert] My initial reaction was shut up!

I don't want to work with trash.

-Good morning. -Good morning.

[Tim] For this challenge, you will be sourcing

recyclable materials to create an outfit

of your choice.

I am delighted to introduce

Matthew Cause of Waste Management

Recycle America,

who will tell us more about where we are.

[Matthew] You're at the Waste Management Recycle America

materials recycling facility,

Port Newark, New Jersey.

Each and every day, nearly 500 tons

of recyclable materials pass through these doors.

There are three bins for each of you

to collect your materials.

This challenge is about innovation

and creativity.

So think about that when making your choices.

And you will have 30 minutes here.

After which, we will go back to Manhattan

to an art supply store where you will buy materials

to help you with your construction.

[Michael Knight] This challenge

definitely forces me,

as well as the other designers,

to think outside of the box.

So your 30 minutes starts now.

[Uli] How are we gonna work with that stuff?

Does this stuff have an end?

[Kayne] You finding some cool stuff?

Think I can make fur trim out of this, Alison?

The only sort of fabric-type item that I saw

were these gigantic "For peanuts only" bags.

I'm gonna get dizzy doing this.

Designers, you have 17 minutes.

Oh, my God. Martha Stewart.

This is kind of fun for me,

because I grew up White Tr*sh.

And my sister and I used to always

go dumpster diving.

Spent my whole life in the trash can.

You all have ten minutes, all right?

As long as it can be glued, stapled, sewn together,

I'm good.

I guess fashion people don't recycle.

Because this is trash,

I wanna make something contradictory to trash.

I'm gonna make art.

[Alison] I was excited to work in something else

other than fabric for a change.

That was inspiring.

All right, everybody, time is up.

We have to get back to Manhattan.

Bring your bins with you. We're all leaving.

[beat boxing]

Oh, stop.

[Kayne] We had 15 freakin' minutes

to get what we needed.

And we only had a $25 budget.

Oh, [bleep].

[Jeffrey] I got some acrylic paint.

And I want to stain the newspaper

and create a really pretty textile palette

for my dress.

$20 with tax.

Designers, time is up.

Please meet me at the front door.

All right, everybody,

you have until midnight tonight only.

[Angela] I just, like went, oh, my God.

Reality check.

We've had generally, like, two days to do the challenges.

It's gonna be a little pressure cooker.

[Tim] I'm gonna check with you later.

[Kayne] There's everything from...

cardboard and newspaper

and plastic bottles and Mylar.

It's definitely gonna be a little bit of a challenge

to get our creative minds working

and see what we can come up with.

[upbeat music playing]

[Alison] I was imagining making, like,

a big, voluminous skirt.

But I didn't know if it was gonna

turn out all right.

When you have a shorter challenge,

you just have to keep in mind

every step you're gonna take.

And there's no room for error.

[Angela] The design of the dress

is going to be very simple.

I love, love, love patchwork.

So I'm just going right back to what I know.

[Michael Knight] These materials I got,

they're so hard and stiff.

I'm really letting them speak to me.

Whatever form and shape they take,

I'm just kind of just pinning

and tucking and letting it happen that way.

[bleep]

I let things evolve.

I don't own the future, I don't go there.

You know what I mean?

I just let it come. Let it come.

And that's how I work.

[sighs]

I don't wanna do it. This is [bleep]

Vincent, I think the guy's, like, completely whack.

He's gonna crack any day now.

He's not mentally stable.

He's weird.

[Robert] I have about two seconds for dinner tonight.

[Kayne] I know, right?

Let's trash talk someone.

[Kayne] If I go home, I [bleep] deserve it.

Then I'll have to face Laura all by myself.

Sometimes I feel like she wants to.

Her dress is cute.

It looks like a straitjacket.

I was like, she's sewing for herself again.

[Kayne] She kissed me on the cheek today.

[Robert] I know, I was like, you're gonna get a rash.

[Jeffrey] Laura is just boring me to tears.

I can't believe Laura is doing what she's doing.

I really pray to God

the judges send her to the guillotine.

Another high-waisted skirt.

[Alison] I thought I was on top of the world,

making the most beautiful thing ever.

Putting these striped pieces of paper together

that I cut out and arranged

in kind of an abstract way.

So it was forming this really cool pattern.

And then I started to sew it.

And it was turning into a nightmare.

Just started to look awful.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway...

The clock is ticking.

There's some serious ugly in this room right now.

I hope I don't get kicked off tomorrow.

[upbeat music playing]

[Robert] The challenge is that you had

to construct an outfit

with bins of recyclable materials.

I love the idea of recycling.

I recycle. Plastics, papers.

Ex-boyfriends.

[Kayne] How much time are we gonna have?

Do we have to stop at midnight?

Can we go 'til 1:00?

I think everyone is feeling the tension

about the deadline in the room.

Because pretty much every challenge

we've had so far has been a two-day challenge.

I just had a freak-out for a minute.

I had a big problem earlier.

I was, you know, freaking out for a little bit.

I was like, oh no, this is not working.

So now I am crinkling paper.

So I am thinking of doing, like,

a super-sculpted, like, voluminous skirt

in this turquoise.

And then I have, like, this cream color

that I'm gonna mix in with it.

The clock is ticking.

When the night is over, we're gonna be done.

We have to be done, no matter what.

I'm happy that I've made it this far.

But it's really important to me that I stay here,

because designing clothes is my life.

[upbeat music playing]

[Uli] You're crazy!

Wow.

[Kayne] I chose lime green for some reason.

Which was an atrocious mistake.

[laughing]

[Laura] Kayne's dress was a clear dog in the room.

It's got this big, stiff paper skirt.

He painted this huge green flower on it.

Come on, sister.

I went overboard. It's one of those things

where I just kept adding and adding.

And it ended up looking like a toad

exploded all over it.

That's awful.

[Laura] Yeah, I know.

There is just not much else to say about it.

It's a total "what were you thinking?"

Kayne could be in serious trouble.

I hope I don't get kicked off tomorrow.

[Jeffrey] This is a really fun challenge.

I love it.

I love the newspaper idea, just 'cause

I've been working with newspaper.

So, yeah. I'm excited about it.

I think I'm gonna win.

I think I got this in the bag.

[laughing]

[Alison] Yay!

All right, Michael.

[Michael Knight] I auditioned for season 2 of Project Runway.

And of course, I didn't make season 2.

[applause]

[Michael Knight] I've been waiting for that moment

since I got here.

But prior to going to that audition,

I wrote on a piece of paper

just a little mantra to myself.

It says, "I will make Project Runway.

And I will win Project Runway."

Today I happened to look in my wallet.

That same piece of paper was in there.

So, um, I think it's really pre-destined.

And, um, I'm here.

I have me a piece on that Wall of Fame.

[Vincent] It's experimentation time.

'Cause I got my dress done.

Now all I have to do is find out

what looks good, if anything,

from all the pile of junk that I have here.

I'm onto something right now.

I just have to tweak it.

This dress is nice. It's hot.

I look around the room, it feels good.

It's like painting a picture, you know?

And I think everyone likes to do things like that.

It's using your heart.

[Laura] I'm not crazy about Vincent's design.

But it's just sort of this white, strapless

long, sheath dress.

And then he just glued garbage

all over the front of it.

Reminds me of, um, a party dress or something.

I sincerely doubt that I'm not gonna

go forward after this contest.

Because it's a hot dress.

I like it. I'm happy with it.

[tense music playing]

-Hi. -[designer] Hello.

How are you?

-Uli. -Hi, Tim.

This is gorgeous.

-Thank you. -Don't you think?

[Uli] Yes, I think so.

That's what I wanted to do with all the white.

But it was too stiff

so I put the silver in.

It's gorgeous.

So, Jeffrey, how are you?

-Yes. Good. -Good.

I'm happy, if you can... [chuckles]

-You can tell by the color. -Yeah.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Stunning. It's really

-incredibly stunning. -[Jeffrey] Thank you.

[Tim] Vincent.

What is this?

-[Vincent] I don't know. I-- -[laughs]

What do you mean you don't know?

To me it looks like a g*y old party dress.

-A happy old party dress. -[Tim] Wow.

[Vincent] Um, I kind of like it.

Avant-garde.

Symmetry.

Well, but I have to tell you this.

I don't like the fact

that it's only decorated on the front

and not on the back too.

It's like a painting that's walking.

It's a one-dimensional dress,

which is not good.

-Michael. -Yes, sir.

-How are you? -I'm great.

This is pretty much a top I did.

Just a simple little bustier I kind of weaved.

This is the skirt that goes with it.

So this...

the bustier kinda of sits inside the skirt.

And that is on top.

This is beautiful.

This is really beautiful.

But the skirt, it's looking to me

like a blank canvas.

-[Michael Knight] Okay. -Make me believe.

-I got you. -[Tim] All right.

-Alison. -Hi.

-How are you? -Good.

My model's blonde,

and it could look really pretty on her.

Do you have the zaftig model?

What? I have Alexandra.

What do you mean?

She's a little large.

[whispers] Yeah.

When Tim came in to check on our progress,

um, he was a little concerned because, um,

I do have a model who's...

larger than all of the other girls there.

Will this constrain the skirt at all?

Well, I'm gonna-- I'm gonna make a waistband.

And I want--I want--

The--I want this to open up a little bit.

He was struggling with the same problem

that I was struggling with.

It's how I'm going to cinch the waist

and, um, wrap up this dress

to make it look really modern and young

versus the puffy, matronly feeling that I was getting.

So I'm a little worried.

I don't know.

Keep in mind it's about the model you have.

It has to look good on her.

All right, carry on.

Kayne.

This is not what I was expecting.

I'm disappointed.

It looks like a high school craft project.

I'm sorry. It does.

about my garment.

Tim just said he hated it and it was horrible.

I'm not even thinking about winning at this point.

I'm just looking to make a garment that's passable

for me to the next round.

I wonder about your choices so often.

Well, honey, I worry about your character, and that's worse.

I'm just not gonna be degraded on camera.

That's just bull[bleep].

[Kayne] I was hoping that maybe Tim

would love my garment.

And he didn't. He hated it!

It was absolutely awful, and he hated it.

So I have one hour to finish my garment

before the runway show tomorrow.

So I am making a whole new skirt

with the materials I have left, which is Mylar.

[upbeat music playing]

That's awful.

I have made a fairy costume.

How do I do this to myself?

[chuckles]

[dramatic music playing]

[Alison] After the critique from Tim,

I was really stressed out.

I'm kind of winging it in a way,

like, trying to get everything done

with the time constraints.

The judges look for garments

that are constructed flawlessly,

that hang well, that look nice.

So I'm a little worried.

[upbeat music playing]

Hmm.

Oh, another hard day

at the waste management recycling center.

Oh, ouch.

We're home, ladies and gentlemen.

It's ladies and gentlemen.

I had confetti inside my socks.

[Robert] I have glitter in my shoe still.

I just hope I'm safe tomorrow.

I wish Tim would've come in a little bit earlier.

I definitely feel like in the group,

my dress is one of the worst.

There's no way in hell I was in the top.

Definitely wasn't gonna win

unless they were smoking crack

before the runway show.

You have two hours

to fit your models, to send them

to the TRESemmé hair salon,

to the L'Oréal Paris makeup room.

You've only two hours,

and I am sending in the models right now.

This is your beautiful, fun, storybook piece.

[Uli] Did she try it on yet?

-Huh? -[Uli] Did you try--

Not yet. I know it will fit.

Not until later.

-Uh-oh! -Are you serious?

Nope, there's no way, man.

Are you serious?

Let's just do it the other way.

That's what I said.

I know, sweetie. I'm so--I'm so sorry.

[Robert] I think fit is definitely

a concern for myself

and the other designers,

because when you're working with things

that aren't traditionally used in making clothing,

not only do they not have any natural give,

but they destruct very easily.

So the hope is that everything just holds together

long enough to make it down the runway.

If it just rips, I don't care.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kayne] I want kind of

a crazy, kooky look.

So not gorgeous.

All of it up on top of her head.

Okay, we'll give her a big bow made out of hair.

-[laughter] -Yay, okay. I'm so happy.

[upbeat music playing]

[makeup artist] What's this made out of?

-[designer] Newspaper. -[makeup artist] Really?

This challenge is something else.

The most painful thing to watch

is Kayne and Alison's styling choices.

The hair and the makeup.

Alison showed up with this huge, like,

Minnie Mouse yellow bow of hair.

It was, uh, frightening.

I think I could be in the bottom, which is okay.

I just hope I don't get kicked off.

I don't feel like it's my time. I'm not ready to go.

Please, Jesus, don't make me go home.

[Laura] Why did you choose that color green, Kayne?

-Where did that come from? -Stress. It was stress.

I swear to God, I worry about...

I wonder about your choices so often, sweetheart.

Well, honey, I worry about your character,

and that's worse, so... you know.

Oh-oh!

And the thing is, I've won a challenge,

and I was in the top three last time.

-I know. -So you shouldn't worry

-about my choices. -Oh, that dress was amazing.

Yeah, it was. It was fantastic.

So where I wanted the dress to cinch in,

um, it didn't, because her torso's just kind of straight.

I'm gonna tape it closed,

so be really careful not to rip the dress.

So I was trying to make the best of it.

Walk for me now.

To me it looked like a huge canvas of art.

And it just got me off. I loved it.

It was like a child's drawing.

I love it, I love it.

Designers and models, this is it.

She looks huge.

[designers] Hi, Heidi.

Welcome to the runway.

As you know, in fashion one day you're in...

and the next day, you're out.

There are nine of you now.

And after tonight, there will be eight.

For this challenge, we asked you

to create an outfit out of recyclable materials.

You had paper, plastics, and metal to choose from

and one day to put it together.

So we hope we see some real innovation

and creativity on this runway.

Let's meet the judges.

First we have top American designer:

-Michael Kors. -Hey, guys.

Nina Garcia, fashion director of ELLE magazine.

Good morning.

And celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe.

Hi.

[Heidi] We will score your designs

as they come down the runway.

One of you will be named the winner...

And one of you will be out.

Let's start the show.

[upbeat music playing]

[Uli] When I saw my dress on the runway,

I liked it. It looked kind of clean.

And really had to look twice what it was made of,

because of the braiding.

[Angela] When I saw the garment

coming down the runway,

I just thought it looked fantastic.

I thought it really worked.

Clarissa completely rocked it.

[Michael] Looking at my creation

come down the runway felt really good.

She worked it.

It looked like something wearable.

You know, the skirt was hard as a brick.

[Vincent] The silhouette that it painted

when she walked down the runway,

it was like seeing art in motion.

I was really, really crazy about it.

It just got me off.

[Robert] I'm really thrilled,

because it looks like a real c*ck dress,

albeit a cheap, tacky c*ck dress

that a hooker might wear. But nonetheless,

it still looks like real clothes.

[Jeffrey] I'm really happy

that the blue and yellow dress

looks the way it does

and fits the way it does

and moves the way it does.

The execution was flawless.

[Laura] When my dress came out,

it looked like this crispy white beautiful thing

against Camilla's dark skin.

It was stunning.

[Alison] When I saw my model come down the runway,

you know, I looked at the fit.

It was kind of wide and hanging.

So I wasn't sure how my piece was going to be judged.

[Kayne] I just really hate my dress.

I was hoping that the silhouette and the fit

was enough to at least get me by.

But I felt like I was in trouble.

[tense music playing]

[Heidi] We've scored your designs.

I would like to start with Michael.

How I tried to use innovation was pretty much

imagining these being fabrics, a different type of fabric.

I imagined this plastic bag to be, like, um, organza.

This corset, I imagined this being, like, taffeta.

And this peanut sack, maybe linen.

Um, I really like this piece.

[Rachel] I think it's fantastic.

I think it's--it's simple and chic.

It is very avant-garde, but not too much.

It fits perfectly.

Thank you.

I really love this too.

I think it was very clever

to use the plastic as the--the wrap.

I think that you truly understood the word innovation.

Innovation doesn't have to hit you in the face.

The whole thing, I look at it,

and I say, "You know what?

I can see a really cool-looking girl wearing that."

So, kudos.

Vincent, I would love to know

what kind of materials you used.

What did you find?

For this dress, we used a plastic sack.

Paper goods that came in reams.

And you could see the confetti.

[Heidi] Michael?

I think that you have to look at

how the clothes actually move.

When she walked, she had a hard time walking in it.

I think that if it was a mini dress,

and she could actually move

and you didn't see the crunching when she walked--

When I see that come out, it turns me on.

And that's what matters. I'm proud of this dress.

[Nina] Yeah, it's a little bizarre, I think--

It is bizarre, and that's what I like.

-It looks-- -It's artsy.

Very artsy.

You don't think that your model had difficulty

walking down that runway?

She did-- yes, she did.

[Michael Kors] I think that that's the trick.

If it turns you on, and you're--

you're excited by the dress, hey.

But the reality is,

whatever your idea,

it's not functioning when she walks.

[Heidi] I do have to say that

you were innovative, and you were not afraid.

-Yeah, I-- -And I do appreciate that.

Laura.

I used the peanut sack.

And some crate strapping and magazine paper.

I like that it said,

"For Peanuts Only" on the bag.

And so, um,

then I kind of pleated it, and it said "For nuts only."

I was trying to sort of

create the elegant joke, you know.

I love this dress.

And I think your tailoring is amazing.

I think all the pieces that I've seen from you

are very elegant. And...

you almost kind of know when it comes on the runway

it's a Laura outfit.

[Michael Kors] I love the impeccableness

of what you do, I think that's great.

I also think the flower,

by the way, Laura, is brilliantly done.

-[Heidi] Kayne. -[Kayne] Unfortunately,

I put all my eggs in a basket at the recycling plant.

And I spent most of my time twisting off bottle caps,

which, of course, you see none.

Um, none of from here down was supposed to be here.

I finally just ended up going with,

we just need to make you look like

you were just sent through the recycling plant,

and this is how you ended up.

Like she's just been rolling around in the dumpster.

-That's what I had-- -[Nina] This really--

Talk about looking like a costume.

This really looks like a costume.

A bad costume, on top of it.

Honestly, I was very stressed for time.

And it just was a bad decision,

to be honest.

The actual design,

it is very intricate, especially now

that you're telling me that you really did this

-in a minute, basically. -Right.

However,

you just had to stop.

[Heidi] I want to take her makeup off, slick her hair back.

[overlapping conversation]

And I think you stepped over the boundary of taste.

Jeffrey is next.

I went for different papers.

Newspaper, magazine paper.

And also, um, sort of the inside of a box.

You can see she--

she can jump around in it, she can dance in it.

-She can drink in it. -Totally.

She just can't fall down in it.

[Nina] I love the shape, I love the fact

that you were yes, creative and innovative,

and it still looks wearable and beautiful.

-It's a great job. -Thank you.

It's different, and it looks like fabric.

It's the only dress here that actually moved

when it walked down the runway.

I think the silhouette's great.

The trompe l'oeil belt is great.

And it's kind of like ugly beautiful.

-Yeah, yeah. -Which I think

is very your aesthetic.

[Heidi] Alison.

What did you find? What are your materials?

I found, um, clean sheets of yellow paper.

And, um, when I brought it back to the workroom,

I started sculpting it and draping it on the dress form.

And, um, kind of let it do what it wanted to do.

To me, she looks huge.

You know, I don't think that it's very, uh,

flattering for--for her body.

Uh, and she looks kind of like Minnie Mouse, in a way,

with those--that funny hair on her head.

I wanted to kind of make it fun.

She looks like a plus model in this.

It just is not flattering at all.

[Rachel] If this is your model,

you have to sort of think

what's gonna be best on her.

It's really unflattering.

I find that really surprising

from a female designer

that you would do that to a beautiful young girl

who's got a great figure.

Could we see it again from the back?

I don't see the innovation here.

It seems so, like, stuck together.

[Michael Kors] I mean, it looks like

a dinner napkin just crumpled up.

She looks like a paper brioche.

We've heard what you had to say. We're gonna have a little chat.

that crazy anywhere.

We went from Marilyn Monroe to Frankenstein here.

Serious lapse of taste. Lapse of judgment.

But the guy knows how to make clothes.

I think that the idea

of how he draped the paper

over the cloth, super cool.

I thought it was a very new,

different color instead of a safe, boring thing

that everyone else does.

Like, a very smart dress.

Like, who thinks of that?

-Vincent. -She looked like she was walking

in a refrigerator carton when she moved.

[Nina] It was just all those things coming out

that looked like an expl*si*n or a bad science project.

He likes to push the envelope a little bit.
