All four of us are goin'. All four!

You give me a hug, both of you.

This is Project Runway.

Fashion is my life.

I'm going to win.

[Heidi] Fifteen contestants.

I'm fabulously glamorous.

I've got mad skills.

But only one can be the winner.

I'm better than they are.

You gotta be kidding me.

[laughing]

For these 15 contestants,

Project Runway is the chance of a lifetime.

[tense music playing]

[laughs]

We have a final four this year.

Congratulations, Uli, Michael, Jeffrey, and Laura.

Are you all excited?

Yes, yes.

Good, because for your final challenge,

you will be designing 12 looks

for Olympus Fashion Week.

We're giving you a budget of $8,000

and two months to put it together.

You also will be using your models from the last challenge.

The winner will receive a spread in ELLE magazine,

a mentorship with INC International Concepts Design,

a year of representation

from Designers Management Agency,

a brand-new 2007 Saturn Sky Roadster,

and $100,000 to start their own line,

furnished by TRESemmé Professional Hair Care.

I'm not just efficient at sewing.

I'm efficient at packing.

The opportunity to move another level forward

with Bryant Park--

It's gonna be such a career opportunity.

I don't think it's necessarily daunting,

the idea of having to produce a whole line.

I mean, I've produced a whole line of kids.

Why can't I produce a whole line of dresses?

[Uli] Winning off the last challenge

definitely makes me more confident

to go to Bryant Park.

People think I'm, like,

just going with the flow,

and I'm enjoying the ride.

But maybe I'm the one who's gonna end up on top.

[Michael Knight] The journey, the roller coaster

up and down was all worth it.

that I want to see walk down the runway

of our four finalists.

First is Michael Knight,

who's working on his collection in Atlanta.

Tim.

Where'd you-- How are you?

I'm great. How are you?

It was like seeing an old friend.

By the way, I'm a brace face now.

You see, I have braces now. So let me just--

So, you know, you can just call me Brace-face.

Yeah, this is an adorable house.

Thank you so much. I love it.

How long have you been here?

Um, for about two years now.

Okay, well, this is my office/workroom here.

This is where I do my work.

-Nice. -My little sewing nook.

[Tim] Great.

This is where I live. This is where I work.

[Tim] So where is your collection?

I can't wait to see it.

Um, here.

I have a couple of pieces here.

And, um, I actually have to set up everything.

Can we take everything out in the living room?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

'Cause I think we'll have more room.

So here we are.

My colecciónes.

-Great. -Um--

So how far along are you?

Um, I'm definitely--

I'm still in the early beginning stages.

I've just started maybe a week and a half ago.

My collection, I call it, uh,

Street Safari, basically.

-Okay, good title. -Um...

I don't know.

I just really started with this look here,

and it's pretty much like a--a dress

and a safari-style jacket.

From there, everything else came with it.

I wanted to kind of keep the palette somewhat neutral

but kind of with splashes of color.

-It's spring. -Yes, exactly.

And as I started to design it, it--

almost some of the pieces

have a slight '70s feel to it.

-This is that first piece here. -Yeah.

[Michael Knight] It's done.

[Tim] I like these details.

-Thank you. -[Tim] This is nice.

I think it's a great place to begin.

So what else do you have?

Um, I have a couple more pieces I can show you.

Yeah, I want to see them.

I'm gonna tell you, I'm having a conflict here.

I want you to make sure

that this collection is cohesive.

Because I'm not seeing it right now.

What's happening with this rear end?

I don't know. That's why I'm--

I'm not good with zippers.

I think you need to shorten it.

Okay.

Tim suggested that I make

my collection a little bit more cohesive.

I have just a little less than a month left.

And I only have three looks completed.

I don't wanna fret over it.

So, uh, you know, I'm gonna continue

just to do what I do and make it work somehow.

So just do it. Get to work.

Yes, I love it.

Okay, so, you saw my stuff,

love your feedback.

And, um, my parents are actually gonna meet us

at my cousin's house.

-We're having dinner. -Great.

[Michael Knight] It's important for Tim

to meet my family

just because I wanna show him,

you know, what I came from.

Basically, I am an Army brat.

So I lived and grew up, like, everywhere.

I lived in Oklahoma, Texas, New York,

and a host of other states.

One day--I think I was maybe,

like, nine or ten--

I just pulled out some lined paper

and my big, fat, jumbo Crayola markers

and just started to sketch.

It really was God-given.

My family, my mother, my father

have had my back since day one.

My wife and I said,

"He's gonna be a beautician." We see it.

That's pretty much where he's gonna go.

But he did a turn on us.

He's so lucky to have your support.

[Michael Sr.] Never once did I say,

"Michael, you don't want to do this.

"Sewing, seamstry, you know."

-I love you. -Yeah.

[Michael Knight] They've always called me

the star of the family.

They're my motivation.

I really want to win to make them proud.

Father, we thank you right now,

and we're just so honored to be a part

of this great feat for Michael.

We ask right now, God, that you will continue

to watch over him.

-Amen. -[all] Amen.

[Michael Knight] I'm really ready to go to Fashion Week

and win this show.

Ooh, I hope I don't eat those words.

No, I'm gonna win. I'm gonna win.

I'm winning.

Gotta think positive.

[chanting] Hommmm.

[indistinct conversations]

[man] This is so good.

[upbeat music playing]

[Tim] Next up is Laura Bennett,

who's been working on her collection in New York City.

[doorbell rings]

Laura?

-Yes? -Hi, it's Tim Gunn.

Oh, this is so exciting. Come up.

-[Laura] Hello. -Laura,

-I'm so thrilled to see you. -Great to see you.

It was great to see Tim again.

Sort of a friendly, familiar face.

Well, you look fantastic.

-I've been very busy working. -I know you have.

So I haven't had much time to whine about being pregnant.

This baby is a boy.

It is my fifth boy in a row.

What are the chances of that?

Probably about the same as making it

on Project Runway.

It certainly hasn't slown me down at all.

[Tim] Wow. What space!

[Laura] Great space for New York.

And it's a great space for the kids.

'Cause they have a lot of room to run and play.

And I have some pictures--

some funny pictures I wanted to show you.

Here's my grandmother. She was a painter.

And I spent a lot of time with her as a child,

sewing and painting

and making little sculptures.

It's in the blood.

[Laura] I lived in New Orleans most of my life.

My mother worked as a sewing teacher.

[Tim] Oh.

[Laura] And I learned to sew from her.

And that's definitely been influential

in the sewing work that I do now.

Well, can I show you my collection?

-I'd love to see, yeah. -Come see.

-I've been working very hard. -I'd love to see.

I have it divided into four groups.

Laura.

Look at all that you have done.

I know. Well, nothing--

nothing is finished.

But what I wanted to do is get something going

-on each garment-- -Good, good, good.

So that we had something to discuss.

This one is a simple jersey gown.

But the embellishment happens on the inside.

Beautiful.

So from the outside, it looks kind of

quiet and demure, and then when she moves,

you get that sort of sparkle.

I really thought that I needed to do a collection

that was about me

and some of my signature moves

and take it all to a new level.

I thought that evening wear would put on a better show.

Where do we go next?

[Laura] uh, the last group.

I love these, and I see perfectly

how they fit in, how the transition can work.

But you know, I gotta tell you something.

You're gonna have to really

youth this up in the styling.

'Cause it could go old.

[Laura] Yeah.

This one...

the green is--

It's all out there.

It's a lot of look.

I guess this is where I was trying to take a risk

for that kind of final piece

and go out of my kind of comfort zone.

But I just think in order to win this competition,

I can't be safe.

I really want to win this competition.

I surprised myself how competitive I've become.

'Cause I don't want my friends to say,

"That was beautiful. You should've won."

I just really want to win.

Here's my question. I'm gonna be perfectly blunt.

Is this even pretty?

I'm not certain it is.

For me.

Hmm.

On the one hand, you have achieved

a miraculous amount of work.

At the same time, you've got a lot

-to think about. -Yeah.

A lot of the work that I have left to do

-is hand work. -Yeah.

And very tedious.

How adept are the boys?

[Laura] Oh, speaking of the boys.

[Tim] Wow, what timing.

Mom!

[Laura] Did you say hello to Tim?

Hi, how are you?

[Tim] What's that?

-What is it? -Turtle poop.

Ew. Sorry.

I don't think I want any turtle poop.

Take it.

I'm drawing the line at the turtle poop.

[Laura] My littlest one offered him turtle poop.

Maybe that was sort of an olive branch,

to sort of offer Tim the turtle poop.

"Here, welcome to our clan.

"Have some poop."

The turtle did it.

[Laura] Well, where is the turtle?

Yeah, where is the turtle?

[Laura] All right. Let's find Frank, everybody.

[Tim] We're missing a turtle.

[squeals]

[Laura] Hopefully he didn't go out the stairs.

[techno music playing]

I don't know where he is.

All right, well.

He'll show up.

[Tim laughs]

-Hi, how are you? -Hi, Peter. Nice to see you.

-Good to see you. -How are you?

-Great. -Good.

[shouting and screaming]

I've been here with you and the kids for...

How long have we all been together? 30 minutes?

I'm already exhausted.

How do you do all this?

If we don't have this, we go,

"Wait, it's too quiet."

[Tim] Yeah!

[Laura] There's Frank.

[Tim] He's a good-looking tortoise.

[Laura] Raising five children,

I've never really been able to get

any of my personal design work off the ground

because I've never had the money

to start a business and take it

to the next level.

So hopefully, um,

winning Project Runway will do that for me.

Congratulations on the collection.

-Thank you. -And...

you're gonna bring it all together.

Yeah, we'll make those tough decisions.

Yeah.

I've been fortunate that my family

has really sort of gathered around me

and really driven me to want to succeed

and take this whole thing.

I wanna take those other designers down.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway...

I am completely in awe

of what you're doing with these zippers.

[Jeffrey] Awesome.

How is your life, Jeffrey?

Are people throwing eggs at you?

I didn't jump up off the sofa when Jeffrey came in.

[Tim] Next I'm traveling to see Uli Herzner,

who's been working on her collection in Miami.

-Hi, Tim. -Uli!

-How are you, sweetheart? -How are you?

I'm so thrilled to see you.

Nice seeing you again.

Situational here--

But that's the dream

-of America. -Wow.

-[Uli] Nice, huh? -[Tim] That's incredible.

This is just fantastic.

Yeah, that's why I do all these,

um, tropical dresses.

I understand it.

[Uli] A lot of my inspiration

comes from Miami and the living down here

and the weather and the water

and the colors here and the people's lifestyle.

[Tim] So I'd love to see the collection.

My collection--the theme is gonna be, like, safari.

Tropical safari thing.

So I wanna do dresses.

This I started with.

[Tim] It's beautiful, but that isn't enough to win.

I'm worried about the judges saying you're a one-note.

What about this collection

is going to surprise them?

-This one. -Yeah.

This is beautiful.

And I love it with that.

And that goes back into kind of the safari theme.

Yeah. Oh, definitely.

With the bone, yeah.

-I'm glad you like that. -Untypical Uli. I love it.

So I have my 12 pieces.

I know what I want to do.

So I just have to do it now.

But that took a long time to figure out

what I wanted to do actually.

But now that you have, and you're there,

you know you can just move forward.

-Yeah. -And not really think anymore.

Just make.

So maybe it would be good for us

to clear out of your studio space

and go somewhere and have a--just talk.

Yeah, let's go to the beach,

because I get a lot of inspiration

from the beach and the palm trees.

[relaxed guitar music playing]

[Tim] This is amazing.

Yeah, this is beautiful. It's vast.

[Uli] I just like it.

Let's go on there.

Yeah.

This is just so different from Germany.

Oh, yeah. Big, big, big difference.

Were you dreaming about living in a climate like this

all the time you were growing up?

Actually, when I was little, I could see on Miami Vice,

when I was a little girl.

And I would always see Miami Vice,

and I was dreaming of the palm trees

and the beaches and the water,

and then I ended up here.

-You have it now. -I have it.

Growing up in East Germany,

we didn't have much.

If you don't have things, you make things.

That's what I learned there.

And I started making clothes very early,

I think when I was eight.

I also grew up with not much color.

That's why I wanna show more life with color and--

and movement in my clothes.

I knew you grew up in Germany,

but I didn't realize that you grew up in East Germany.

It was really dangerous.

-Yeah. -You could get shot or, like,

would go to jail.

It doesn't matter how old you were.

Terrible penalties.

But I was always thinking

of a way how to get out.

And then, all of a sudden,

it opened overnight.

I mean, I really live the dream, what you say.

If you come to America, and you--

maybe you're nobody, and maybe you can make it

in quite a short time.

And I think I'm-- I'm almost there.

I might be there, which is kind of, um--

-Very exciting. -A dream thing,

which wouldn't happen in another country.

I don't think it would have happened in Germany.

It's a weird feeling

coming from a small town in Eastern Germany,

and now I'm being the big star in New York Fashion Week.

But surprises happens.

And I think that's why everybody comes to this country.

Because things can happen.

And now I can see it's really true.

Dreams can come through here.

[Tim] And finally, I'm visiting Jeffrey Sebelia,

who's working on his collection in Los Angeles.

Hey, how are you?

-I've missed you. -Hello, good. Good, good, good.

Mwah! Great to see you.

-Good to see you. -Thank you.

I was excited that Tim was coming

but also really nervous,

because throughout the show,

I didn't feel like I convinced Tim

of what my-- my point of view was.

-Hi, Tim. -This is Melanie.

-Gotta give you a kiss. -Thank you.

-How are you, Melanie? -I'm so good.

And this has gotta be Harrison.

-This is him. -Hi, Harrison.

I met Melanie through some mutual friends

couple of years ago.

And we fell in love immediately.

Five months after we got together,

Melanie got pregnant.

Congratulations on this little guy.

Thank you.

I always say it's Jeff's best design.

[laughter]

We re--we just feel lucky.

Having a baby, having Harrison

has opened my heart up

more than I could ever have imagined.

I love him more than I love anything.

Anything or anyone.

Aren't you pleased you're not living

and designing in the same place?

I was.

Started making clothes in my living room here.

I was having to make things around the clock.

You know, literally work from 6:00 in the morning

until, like, 2:00 the next morning.

It just took off immediately.

Whatever success I have now as a designer,

any success is due solely to the fact

that I am--I'm sober.

I was born in L.A.

My dad left us when I was eight, and, uh--

but when he was around,

he was a really scary guy with a lot of rage.

You know, I sort of blamed myself for his leaving.

I was just a very damaged child.

Got into drugs real young.

It was really hard on my family.

About five years ago, I had been on this run

for four years.

I was just, you know, gruesome.

Just, you know, sh**ting drugs.

Just whatever you can imagine.

I went to k*ll myself.

I was gonna hang myself.

And this roommate that I had

who was supposed to be at work

got let go from her job, came home,

found me, and saved me.

The next day, I called somebody for help.

And, uh, I've been clean ever since.

Been almost five years now.

It's amazing to have Harrison now

and to think about, you know,

how hard it is for me

when he just falls down and starts crying.

You know, uh, I can't imagine

what it's like to have one of your children

turn out to be a drug addict living on the streets.

Heartbreaking.

-So? -So how have things

been for you...

since the show started to air?

Oh, uh, crazy.

I was doing work,

developing my next season,

and trying to spend time with my family.

-Yeah. -And now working

on the final collection for the show.

There have been several days where I've just thought,

"God, this is a lot."

More and more, I want to win.

You know, I really want to win.

My motivation is to have a future for Harrison

and to make a life that he can have

and that he's proud of his father.

I'm happy with the way the collection's turning out.

Very happy.

So let's go see it.

-I'd love to see it. -Yeah, yeah.

[Jeffrey] So we went down to my space in Downtown L.A.,

uh, where my office is,

and also my small sewing facility.

So here we are.

-This is a great building. -Yeah, it's nice.

-Wow. -Here we are.

[Tim] Look at the size of this space.

So this is what I'm working on.

I'd love to see.

Maybe we'll put this on the form.

-Okay. -Because it's...

it's a sideshow freak, this thing.

-Is it? -Yeah, I love it.

I love it, I love it, I love it.

My initial inspiration for the collection

was the Japanese ghost and demon stories.

Even though some of the stories are kind of childlike,

they're very sophisticated

and very scary at the same time.

They use a lot of color inspiration,

a lot of the watercolor paintings of these kimonos,

the way they're draped.

I wanted to really try to personify that

in this little collection if possible.

I'm completely in awe

of what you're doing with these zippers.

[Jeffrey] Awesome.

I don't--I mean, I'm so in it,

I was sick of the whole thing three days ago.

[Tim] No, that's natural.

You should be 'cause you're living with it,

and it's like, "Oh, God."

And it just goes on for so long.

Yeah, it does.

So then this is to fit in again

with this sort of more casual story.

Just a really pretty halter.

Unexpected.

Oh, cool, cool. Thanks.

This is beautiful.

-I gotta give you a hug. -Yes, thank you.

I'm just so thrilled with this.

Yeah. Hope the judges like it.

Tim really likes it, which feels good.

But I don't think it's at all

any kind of foreshadowing

about how the judges are gonna perceive what I do.

I'm living on borrowed time.

And, uh, it's all a gift at this point.

It's all just a huge gift.

I'm eternally grateful for everything that I have.

[dramatic music playing]

I'm excited.

This moment is actually happening to me.

I can't believe it.

I love the collection.

Actually, my biggest thing was just seeing

how their collection came together

and what I'm competing against.

like they weren't really trying to look

at everybody's collection.

But I know everybody was,

I have eight dresses, one bathing suit,

and three separates.

[Laura] It looks like you have a lot of pieces.

I think it's the plastic bags

that add this illusion of volume to it all.

You are going to Olympus Fashion Week!

It is the industry's biggest stage.

You need to think about your entire presentation.

This is going to be an extremely busy week,

and today is no exception.

And it's been a few weeks since I've seen each of you,

so I'm eager to check on your progress,

and Jeffrey, I'd love to start with you.

-Cool, yes. -[Tim] Okay?

-Yes. -Great.

So where are you with your progress?

[sighing] I...

I'm really--I'm in good-- really good shape.

This is a look with a leather vest.

-It's stunning. -Yeah, it's beautiful.

It's really stunning, really is.

Then that inspired the handbag.

-Oh, yeah, this is beautiful-- -Right?

--with the zippers, yeah.

Out of the old blazer... pieces.

I may not even use these.

Um, I made 'em because I was thinking,

"Well, I don't have this fabric anywhere else."

I would like to start with this little outfit.

I think it goes really nice into the safari theme.

and make it look as though it all fits

We had our model casting today, which I was really excited for.

Like, this is the fun stuff.

I really wanted a really, really strong walker.

I was thinking about the individual dresses that I have,

and what sort of requirements I have

to make those dresses look the best that they possibly can.

My biggest concern was, you know, getting the models.

Getting the right size and shape models.

we had our first consultation for hair.

It's a feeling of, but modify it to each model

so they look their prettiest.

I really want big roller-set hair.

you want the hair to bounce and move.

[Jeffrey] I chose the wigs, because they're all the same.

I want the girls to sort of be a blank slate for the clothes.

We could have this really clean, hard edge here,

and then keep all of this kind of soft.

I want her to look natural, but pretty.

There's some softness, a little bit of flyaway texture.

But the fact that every hook, every seam is finished,

every hem is done. It's just--

It just doesn't seem possible.

that he actually had the time to execute

those garments in the time we were given.

from L'Oréal Paris to start working

on our, uh, makeup looks.

For the makeup, I was thinking of something more muted.

Like a black, or more animal-like...

You really look like a tiger or something.

[Jeffrey] For the makeup, a nude shine.

I love the shine.

[Collier] See the reflection that it creates?

[Laura] My idea was to go with a strong eye.

What could be interesting, too, and very youthful,

is if the girls had hardly any makeup on.

It's surely suspicious that his level of craftsmanship

bumped up so fast.

You know, we've never seen that type of work

The thing is, I think he designed all these things.

And he never had that kind of craftsmanship before.

that it's his aesthetic,

that it's his fabric.

I just know that he's been talking

about how busy he was doing his collection

for his showroom.

It's nothing that I can prove, it's a gut feeling.

I just wanted to go on record as having said

I just don't believe he did all that sewing on his own.

It can be very difficult, if not impossible,

is that I am taking it to the producers,

and we will investigate this as well as we can.
