About your challenge.

Well, ladies and gentlemen,

I'm especially excited to tell you

That this week's challenge

Is to create a two-piece look

For my new clothing line, bitten.

You'll do it?

-Absolutely. -Okay, good.

The look that you're designing

Is for our fall/winter collection.

The idea behind the line is about creating

High-end american sportswear at affordable prices,

So giving every woman what she needs.

We believe that fashion shouldn't be a luxury,

And quality shouldn't be a privilege.

[Tim] as sarah jessica mentioned,

This two-piece outfit is about affordability.

And she means it.

The entire look

Must retail for less than $40.

-Retail? -Retail.

As you know in fashion,

There's a big difference

Between the cost of raw materials

And the retail price.

Accordingly,

Your budget is $15.

-Wow. -Jesus.

Oh, my god.

I think we're gonna be using toilet paper

And scotch tape.

You will have 30 minutes

To develop design concepts on paper,

Then you will be pitching your ideas

To sarah jessica,

Who in turn will choose seven of you

To move forward with your designs.

To form teams of two.

I love to work in teams,

But I definitely want to be on a good team.

I think when you're designing mass market,

You have to appeal to everyone.

[Christian] I definitely knew I wanted to do a dress.

And a really creative jacket.

Because I didn't wanna copy any of the shapes

That they already have done.

[Ricky] the first challenge--

[Crying] I felt like I sucked!

I still feel like I'm trying to prove myself.

I want sarah jessica parker to like my outfit.

So it was like, "all right...

[Sniffs]

I know I can do this."

I went with, you know, a basic top,

And then I did some maybe

Contrast top stitching

It has a knit dress with a cowl

And a turtleneck.

[Chris] nervous about pitching to sarah jessica.

Absolutely.

Um, I make things that are polymorphic.

So I wanted to make a very simple cape.

Then it becomes a little bit like a hood.

-Before you perhaps-- -it actually goes crisscross around this way,

And ties into a little bow.

Then it could also be tied with a simple, little cascade.

That's very clever.

So I noticed when I looked through the line,

There were no skirts really.

You're right. It's not heavy on the skirts.

So I added a skirt.

Great.

The back, yeah, it will have,

Like, a little placket in the back,

And it will follow the button story back there.

So it's really a button story?

It is a button story.

I mean, I don't mean that in a bad way.

-I mean-- -no.

The jacket is paneled.

And here in this area is gonna be pleating.

And a ribbing at the bottom.

It could be just with leggings that come

This design is really just keeping a balance

Of femininity and strength.

It looks like a complicated jacket to build.

-I love the idea of doing kind of a shirtdress. -Great.

What is this little vest over here?

So I drew it like this.

This will be my second piece.

I love the vest.

Yeah, no, I do too.

Sort of a pullover cape silhouette.

Women who are bigger

Wouldn't feel like this is too much of a tent?

Like, a fitted cape.

-Not so batman looking. -Yeah, okay, great.

The skirt would actually just be

A very plain, black knit.

-So really classic. -Right.

-Very simple. -Right, very simple, very classic.

Fantastic.

It was the idea of the, uh, shirt dress.

Here we're pairing it up with tights.

-A woman who's a size 2 can wear this. -Yeah.

And she can get married and get pregnant,

Take off the belt and still wear this.

A wonderful tunic with a juliet sleeve.

-Okay. -For the bottoms, I'm thinking raw denim.

[Kit] once we got to mood fabrics,

I told him straight up,

"We're using fleece and jersey."

It's leggings, it's a sweatshirt top.

And then the skirt and then the top.

[Steven] okay.

-So we're gonna get that one? -Yeah.

[Elisa] is there any cheaper cotton?

[Sweet p] elisa started pulling out colors

And I knew what I wanted it to feel like.

How long do you think we want these to be?

I really wanted to do a vest and a dress

For some reason.

I thought that kind of fit the bitten girl.

-It looks very sophisticated. -Yeah.

[Rami] I'm envisioning something loose.

The most important thing for me

Is that different body types can wear it.

I actually was thinking sort of a subtle ruffle here.

This is a really important challenge for me,

Because it is sort of my way to prove

That I am a great designer.

I had the opening like this sort of,

Like, from shoulder to shoulder.

[Steven] the design was rather intriguing

That marion had come up with.

And what happens here?

This is just straight?

Or is that...

I did have some concerns about it being overly intricate.

Because we only have until midnight to work tonight.

So what I need to do is I need to figure out

How to do it in the one-cut

The way I want to.

I decided to have these two pieces:

The cape and the polymorphic dress.

And I understood that there would be

A complete juxtaposition of our aesthetics.

Now I'm going to hold this up to you.

Can you put your arm out, please, my dear?

And she's a bit taller than us.

Oh, for sure.

For sure.

[Sweet p] how--oh, it's already wet.

[Elisa] I know, I just did a spit mark.

[Chris] kit and I thought the outfit was really adorable.

We were kinda shocked at how well

We had actually done.

[Elisa] we were sweating there in our seats.

But the way katie worked that dress

Was stunning.

[Sweet p] I'm happily surprised.

I think our final look is great.

[Rami] when lauren's walking in my garment,

I like it, I feel good about it.

[Marion] my garment definitely stood out

From the other designers.

I thought it looked really expensive

For the amount of money that we were given.

[Steven] granted, we did have some problems

With the fitting.

But the outfit's charming, honestly.

[Victorya] I really believed in the dress.

I loved the colors,

I loved the fabric choice.

I was really happy.

[Christian] I thought it looked expensive.

Very chic.

I think the other designers

Knew that it was really strong.

It is a little on the risque side,

But I can't imagine

That the outcome is gonna be horrible.

Of course, I always feel like I wish I had more time.

But I was proud of myself,

I like very much the sketch,

Because there was a simplicity about it

That's very, very appealing,

But my concern was how do you make it interesting?

And I think you did a really good job of that.

This is something that a lot of people

Can wear.

Can I just see the back of it?

[Victorya] it wasn't intended to be a racerback.

But we had it on the form, we were talking,

We were, "la la la."

We love the back.

Would that fit into your fall/winter collection?

Yeah, very nicely.

I think you just really listened to...

Can we see it without the belt?

Sure.

I think it's a nice idea,

But I think the proportions

Are really awkward.

What is the fabric?

[Marion] this is a knit.

I think what actually happened was, um,

This fabric sort of stretches as you work with it.

It looks a bit costumey.

Little pocahontas.

Like, all she needs is, like, a headband and a feather.

[Heidi] sarah?

I thought that the sketch

Was very sophisticated.

And it feels like it maybe

Stops a little short

Of what the intentions of the sketch were.

I think the armholes

Are a little bit too drapey on the side.

You can see a bra,

Which is always a little bit--

[Michael] I can't figure out really

How would you wear it?

[Heidi] I have to say,

I don't get it at all.

It looks like out of the basement.

It looks dirty.

It looks like a rag to me.

[Michael] and the proportion really is tough.

It's a tough one.

Okay, let's move on to elisa and sweet p.

Sarah jessica?

Well, I think you did a great job.

I really liked how the dress looked

When she walked, I thought it was

Sexy and yet appropriate.

[Heidi] it also seems like

You get a lot for the money.

[Sarah jessica] yeah.

It's polymorphic, which means that it can be worn

Infinite numbers of ways.

[Sarah jessica] just curious how the partnership

Broke down and how you all worked together.

I was super nervous.

And I didn't really understand her language.

I don't even know what polymorphic means.

She does not use the type of tools

The rest of us are used to using.

Sometimes I spit mark it, which seems to be

-Really disturbing to my-- -what?

[Heidi] you should not tell people that.

[Laughter]

I mean, you know, people might not like that,

That their dress has been spit on

When they buy it.

What planet are you from then?

[Elisa] the planet where I am

Is one that has been trained to respond purely to materials,

And doesn't necessarily know the language,

But knows how to make it work on the body.

And so I'm coming to your planet but with gifts.

[Laughter]

The plain, simple truth is it's great looking.

A zillion girls would wanna wear that dress.

[Sarah jessica] it drapes beautifully.

The sleeves are kinda stunning.

[Michael] first off, it's a very ambitious jacket.

It's a lot of look, I know.

[Michael] but I mean, can you really picture

That jacket being easy to fit

A lot of different shapes?

Very, very fashion '80s!

[Michael] it's, like, full, like, '80s kinda mugler,

Addicted to love moment.

[Nina] yes, I just think the way that you guys styled it,

Looks very retro.

I actually wanna hear what sarah jessica has to say,

Because I think it's

So much like my sketch, I'm very...

I don't-- i-i really do.

It has a stronger color,

And it's a little bit shorter.

I think it's-- it's more severe in person

Than it was on paper.

[Heidi] do you think it would fit

Into your fall/winter line?

I think if the dress had more length

And it wasn't as snug.

[Heidi] carmen and christian,

Who would it be?

Carmen?

[Heidi] so does that mean

That you think that chris should go?

[Marion] it was my vision,

It was my design concept.

I have to say, the cape is very cute.

[Michael] you could be 50, you could be 15

And look great in that.

It has that swing of american sportswear--

-Jaunty. -You know, that sort of ideal.

Yeah.

She took what seemed insane and whimsy,

And she turned it into

Two great pieces.

What do we think about victorya and kevin?

I think victorya's outfit

As a whole is versatile and beautiful.

[Michael] you have two interesting pieces here.

It's the simplicity that's really interesting to me,

To see what she could do with it.

I don't know about you guys, but for me,

-The pocahontas dress would not work. -Homeless pocahontas.

[Heidi] it was, like, out of the basement.

It looked dirty.

[Nina] I think it looked sad.

[Michael] it was very sad.

Imagine if you were 5'3" what that would look like.

Yeah.

You'd be cousin itt, just like--

It just was ex*cuted

So poorly.

To me they were going for hermes.

Its great flaw is that it's become

Sloppy bohemian.

The whole thing just sort of impl--

It was a house of cards.

In ten minutes on the runway, it grew.

Yeah.

It was melting.

What do we think about christian and carmen?

[Nina] I also hated that.

We're back to the disco '80s.

The next thing you know, you have, like, big button earrings

And you're on facts of life.

-I mean-- -yes!

[Michael] it's just, you can't go that literal.

[Sarah jessica] the sketch, it was bold.

You know, it was powerful,

But it wasn't retro.

But obviously in his brain,

He doesn't have the same reference point.

He had every intention to do exactly what he wanted.
