And I don't wanna have to step on nobody

But I don't see korto's or mine, so...

I don't really know what exactly this is all about.



But you will not be designing for them.

Whew. Awesome.

Because none of us want to design an old lady outfit,

To be honest.

So I bet you're wondering what they're doing here, huh?

These women have brought someone with them

Who you will be designing for, so let's meet them.



And I'm, like, is this some sort of prom challenge?

They look really young.

I would like you to meet their daughters.

They're all recent college graduates,

And their moms have brought them here

For a head-to-toe makeover

To help them transition into their new lives

As independent, professional women.

About the direction of this look.

So in a sense,

They are both your clients.

You will have 30 minutes to meet,

Then we're going shopping at mood with a budget of $100.

The dynamics between mother and daughter

Is the eighth wonder of the world.

If the mother likes it,

The daughter isn't gonna like it.

So how are we gonna come up with something

That the two of them are gonna like

That I gotta design and do a makeover with?

I know, I'm like, I got the cute girl.

I really like anna.

She's sweet. She reminds me of me.

I just landed a position as an assistant buyer

For women's accessories.

I love your style, first of all.

So I'm gonna do what I do best

And make a '40s or '50s look.

See, sophisticated... That's what I like.

Have you found a job yet, or what you wanna do?

I'm kind of between med school or grad school.

Like, what would you be more comfortable in?

I mean, I do like dresses.

Okay.

I do feel I have a little advantage.

I'm a hip mom,

So I can relate to this 21-year-old

Without being, like, this older woman designing for her.

But I think she looks really great in classic clothes.

But she also looks great in funky clothes.

Really?

She currently works in her school's lab,

So I decided to do a wrap dress,

Something that kind of moves,

'Cause she's gonna be wearing it with a lab coat over it.

I went to school for printmaking,

Which leaves me teaching or artist reproductions.

And so I'd like to work for a painter or somebody

As their assistant.

Caitlin's a designer. I'm a designer.

We're both kinda tall and lanky and a little awkward.

I'm not this girly.

No? Okay.

Do you wanna kind of stray away from being too girly?

Yeah. A little more androgynous.

But as a girl still, you know?

Okay, yeah.

The final design we agree on

Is a high-waist pencil skirt,

A kind of blousy top, and a man-style cardigan.

Kind of covers her up a little bit,

But it's still flirty and sexy in its own little awkward way,

Just like her...and me!

I'm looking to become an elementary school teacher.

I need parents to look at me

-And know that I'm the teacher. -Exactly.

Not mistake me for a kid.

Like, I'm the authority in the classroom.

"I can't believe the way she dresses," you know?

Like not too much makeup, not too much jewelry.

I am going to be designing for holly.

Being a teacher,

She's going to be moving around a lot,

And she wants something comfortable.

Do you like skirts? Do you wear pants?

I wear both.

Dresses are the easiest thing,

'Cause if you wear pants,

You gotta worry about a top that matches or a jacket.

If you have a dress, you throw on the dress,

And you're all set to go.

And you can always layer it.

It's definitely tricky

Because I think that holly seems to be

A little bit more easygoing than her mother.

Do you design things with a lot of animal prints

And stuff?

No. No.

She would buy anything with animals--anything.

Oh, really?

Where did you go to school?

School of visual arts.

-And what was your major? -Photography.

Avital is looking for something

That she can interview in, that she can photograph in.

I carry a lot of equipment,

So I definitely like--

I still want it to look professional,

But I'm rolling around a lot and I'm...



With the camera and things like that,

She should be comfortable.

I usually wear pants when I'm sh**ting.

She seems very interested in pants,

Which... Is not suede's thing.

But she's my client. I need to make her happy.

So I'm gonna have to probably go down that pant road.

And very feminine.

Are you thinking any silhouettes?

I mean, I have a few things in mind.

You know, I don't want her to lose her identity,

And I think that might be a concern for her.

Laura doesn't have a job yet,

But she went to school for graphic design,

So she'll be interviewing for some positions.

I immediately throw out, like, a skirt suit,

I think it's a professional look.

But like, what could we do with the jacket

So it still looks like...

I mean, I know I'm gonna be working, but still kinda sexy.

I'm gonna really make sure that it fits you

In the right places.

Designers...time is up.

Since I've decided to go with a suit theme,

It's really gotta come out of a menswear fabric,

And I need to twist it from there.

So I'm hoping to find some kind of pucci-esque print

With purple in it.

So I need to make her look older than a kid.

My outfit for holly is going to be a dress.

I definitely want to give her a more grown-up look.

My very first job

Was designing for a small clothing line.

I came to realize

That I wanted to have my own clothing line.



She hasn't gotten a job yet.



She needs to go on interviews.

-She needs to look super-professional. -Yes, exactly.

My first job was working at gucci,

And I was working in the stockroom,

And I'd open up these boxes that would come in from italy,

And I started to get an affinity for clothing.

I felt like I was bitten by the fashion bug

Very early on.



She's a buyer.

Was she really specific about what she wanted?

She loves vintage,

So I'm doing like... Totally vintage.

As soon as I graduated from college,

I left florida,

And I moved to new york on my own

With zero money in my pocket.

I've been through a lot of jobs.

And I really do feel like

I've been through a lot of obstacles in life.

And I've fought my way through them,

So I'm certainly not gonna stop now.



It makes you look flat-chested.

It like flattens you down.

I'll die if I have to go home.



Oh, I just had to get into making my garment

-Before I started doing all sorts of novelty work. -Your accessories.

This is a makeover challenge.

I am really excited,

And I think that I really can do something

That they're just gonna love.

So I think we're getting down to the end of this.

The first job I ever had was for mcdonald's.

I got all sorts of free big and tasties.

And I got bad skin from standing over a fryer.

I'm just scared about this fabric.

About which fabric?

This.

Girl, you are serving a look down the runway.



My main concern is trying to fuse together

The jacket and the dress to make them look cohesive.



-The kind of punky one? -Yeah, she's cool.

What are you gonna do for her?

She needs something really professional.

She's a photographer.

Since I'm not 100% into the pant,

First thing I do is I drape the jacket.

I definitely think that this jacket is going to be hot.

All right?

Oh, my gosh, that is beautiful!

I wanted to bring in a little bit of pattern and all that,

But still keep it very kind of androgynous.

So we went sheer here

So we could still see the collar bones.

I mean, this ruffle is gonna just create

Such a beautiful shape.

Right?

I really lucked out with getting an amazing mother/daughter team,

And it's exactly what they really wanted.

This is very, very mature and, like, professional.

-You don't want to be quite so-- -so much, yeah.

Can you do the cuff with this,

Or it's too much?

I mean, I can, I just--

I don't know. What do you think?

I think it could end up looking kind of cheap.

Cheap? She wants to be a little crazy,

So I'm trying to do something in between.

I can't do everything they want

And then have the judges say,

Well, we've completely lost you.

Where are you in this work?

This was the skirt fabric.

-That's real conventional/professional. -Yeah.

I don't-- I don't like this.

But I don't know if I have to just get over it...

-Um, you don't like the pinstripe? -No.

Is it too wide? Or what are you thinking?

I just don't like pinstripes.

I don't know whether there's a mirror and you can see it.

Laura immediately says

That she doesn't like the pinstripe fabric.

I get a little worried.



Sophisticated look.

Oh, laura, I think you're gonna look so sharp.



I didn't have a whole lot done,

But I think I can make laura happy

In the final look.

They are very contrasting in texture.

That's me--that was the me that I put in it.

Isn't this print amazing?

I love it.

-Wow. -It's adorable.

Kenley, she can make

One hell of a '50, '60s dress, but that's all.

And that's all she serves up.

So cool. I love this!

I want it.

I don't know, it makes you look flat-chested.

This like comes up so high--i don't know.

Unfortunately, they don't love it so much.

I think if we tried this on in a store,

We would say it--

We could find something more flattering.

We were all kind of waiting to see

Who was gonna get the hedda lettuce in this challenge,

And it seems like it might be leanne.

I have to come up with something that...

My clients are going to like.

I don't know.



She just said if I wanted to make it a little funkier,

She would definitely be up for that.

Yeah, 'cause she's got that little funk.

She's like, I'm sure that's more fun for you anyhow.

I'm going to keep the detail,

But I'm just gonna place it differently.

So I'm gonna change it up,

And I'm gonna make it a little bit different?

I have draped the top, and it's long right now,

Like a dress,

And I really don't wanna do pants.

I'm gonna have to sell avital on the dress idea.

I like it so much better than the pants,

And it's so much more suede.

I got a lotta work to do on this jacket.

But it fit her well in the front.

And then I'm doing a little pocket square

So she can add some-- psshh--crazy color.

Do most girls have an assortment

Of pocket squares on them?



And joe is making an '80s business suit

With a pocket square.

It's pretty bad.

Kenley...may I borrow a pocket square?

You know, I think soft is a better way to go.

I think for the suit, it would look more polished.

This stuff is so dead, it really needs a cut.

How short we talking?

I was thinking here.

I was thinking, like, a rich, coppery color.

Bold slices all the way through

So it breaks up the texture

If we knock out these corners here,

It's just gonna make all of this lay flatter and softer.

Maybe just a slight asymmetry

So it sweeps over.

The sideswipe, definitely.

Longer layers, so it doesn't look so thinned out.

Don't make it too red.

As a professional.

I'm really not that concerned

With tim saying it doesn't look like a graphic designer.

Because really, in the end, I feel that this challenge

Requires the garment to look professional.

I'm definitely confident in my design.

It shows somebody who's professional,

Smart, has some sense about fashion.

Janet felt that her daughter

Looked like a beautiful, mature young adult.

Holly looked so sophisticated.

She wanted to look at little bit more grown up

To make a distinction between

The children and the teacher.

Holly and her mother ellie

Seemed really happy with it.

Again, I hit the nail right on the head.

She looks beautiful!

It's definitely a look

That you really can wear to go find a job.

Caitlin and ellen both have smiles on their faces.

The biggest challenge with my garment

Was trying to fuse together the jacket and the dress.

I believe I've done that.

I didn't take this challenge literally.

She's 21, so her outfit reflects that.

So I really wanted to give her

That artistic piece she's asking for.

She comes down the runway, she's definitely happy.

Taking a young girl and giving her an outfit

Um, well she wanted a dress.





The dress is certainly more charming

Without the jacket.

Holly's got a big smile, a lot of personality.

How old are your students?

They're elementary school age.

I see my kids' teachers.

They wear, like, really casual but comfortable stuff,

'Cause they're with the kids and they're doing things.

She can look sophisticated, but youthful.

My client was caitlin, who I absolutely loved.

And she's kind of into this androgynous thing.

So I pitched the idea

Of, like, pairing it with the cardigan

That's maybe a little bit more masculine,

And she loved it.

I think that you look really great.

I love your hair. I love this look.

For her body type, especially,

I think this looks great.

I like the juxtaposition of that casualness

Of the oversized cardigan yet the very frilly blouse.

It was great from the beginning.

So that made it even better.

Well, my client is avital,

And avital is a photographer,

So she wanted a look that would be strong

And artistic.



The gratuitous jacket

That doesn't really work with the dress.



I would never guess

That you were gonna tell me photographer.

She also wanted something that could go day to evening.

I say just change your clothes before you go out.



This kind of printed dresses

With this shape of a jacket.

I have a lot of problems with this, basically.

I--you know, it's just the tip of the iceberg.

To really find interesting prints,

Interesting patterns.

They're very whimsical, and she does them very well.

And even though it is going back in time,

It worked on her.

How did you like korto?



It was the most perfectly tailored

Of any of the jackets we saw today.

That jacket could have been really expensive.

Okay, let's talk about the ones we had problems with.

I mean, come on!





Yeah, 20 years older, but from another decade.

It's just a disaster.

What about leanne?

There wasn't anything about it that felt fresh.

I understand that she has to look authoritative.

That doesn't mean she has to look frumpy, though.

It's really old-fashioned.

Joe seems really out of touch.

She looked so uncomfortable.
