I think it looks like a beauty pageant.

To create collections for fashion week.

An opportunity to sell their line

And $100,000 to start their own line

All of you will be creating

A collection of ten looks

For new york fashion week.

We're giving you a budget

Of $8,000

And the next two months to put it together.

Remember,

Only three of you

Will compete at fashion week.

When you return to new york,

One of you will be out.

Your evening gown was a misstep for you as designers,

But we feel that with more time and money,

You will shine.

Therefore, we're sending you all home

With one more challenge.

You must design a wedding dress

That represents you as a designer

And is a reflection

Of your line.



'Cause I thought we were finally gonna be free.

But I'm gonna still bring it and work it.

You'll keep your models from the last challenge.

I'm thrilled to be here.

Glad to have you.

So tell me, what is this place?

This place is called park on the river.

It's owned by the city of maumelle.



And it has, like, a few work spaces

Where you can actually rent out--

I actually needed a place

Where I could just focus.

Even though I love my family,

Sometimes I don't think they really understand

The pressure that's on me right now.

I'm scared about this visit, tim.

Oh, don't be scared.

I'm friend, not foe. You know me.

My inspiration is definitely just

Culture and nature, the colors.

I wanted it to look really ethnic

Without being too ethnic.

I have a lot of my beadwork incorporated.

-Oh, this is your own beadwork? -Mm-hmm.

This is gorgeous.

-Yeah. -The palette's stunning.

It's very sophisticated.

The clothes I chose actually

Are a direct reflection of my workspace.

I saw this beautiful vivid green grass

And the snakeskin.

I mean, in these woods that I'm sitting here sewing in,

There are snakes crawling all over the place.

So this is my favorite color in the collection, the green.



-Look at the shape of it. -Yeah.

It gets a little sexual.

[Laughs]

You don't want a snatch shot.

[Laughs]

And what about the wedding dress?

It's not traditional.

This is actually the color I wore when I got married.

I love what this is doing with the texture,

With the ripple of the snakeskin.

And are you doing anything with a veil or a train?

Mm-mm.

I just think you need something that says this is wedding

Rather than red carpet.

Okay. I think I have a lot of work to do.

-But I gotta tell you, it's sensational. -Thank you.

It's really stunning.

-And I'm so proud. -I was scared about this visit.

I had nightmares.

So I'm gonna take tim to my home today

To meet my husband, and my daughter,

And some of my friends.

It's really important to me to stay close to my roots,

'Cause I don't ever want to forget

That's really who I am.

Definitely my strength comes from my parents.

When the civil w*r happened in liberia,

Because my dad worked for the government,

We actually couldn't return home

'Cause he would have been ex*cuted.

It's like something dies in you

When you're taken away from your homeland.

We didn't have anything.

We had to go on welfare and just start from scratch.

I've seen where my parents came from.

Just having what they had, and then to lose it

And then regain it.

It just showed me that just because you fall

Doesn't mean that you--you have to stay on the ground.

You have to keep getting up and you have to keep going.

And I want to show my daughter that whatever she wants to be,

She can be it.

My parents know that I've had this dream

For so long.

And for me to actually win and fulfill that,

I think they're just all so happy for me right now

That I don't even have to win the prize.

Just going to fashion week,

They're so excited.

They're happy that I never gave up.

I love this collection.

But I'm really kind of nervous.

So leanne, tell me about inspiration.

-Okay. -Motivation.

I got back from new york

And I really needed to clear my head.

And so I went down by the waterfront,

And I sketched for a few days.

From there, I just got the idea

Of doing, like, wave patterns.

Mm-hmm.

This was the first piece that I ended up doing.

This is very you.

And it flips out and it's like waves.

But what are you pairing that with?

I'm pairing it with a top like this.

Good, good, good.

-Just really simple. -Great. Excellent.

Nothing is finished.

I understand.

And if this could be just lightly tea-dyed

Or something.

-It's just this color. -Yeah.



Was the white white that I have in my collection,

So I'm probably gonna be doing some dyeing

So that it's more cohesive.

How have you felt about--

Dare I ask-- the wedding dress?

Um, you know, I'm back and forth.

I don't want it to look like a costume,

Where she's like a walking wedding cake.

It doesn't have

The same ease and flow as the collection,

And I would look at this and think,

"Well, if that's what leanne's showing in the other pieces,

Do I even need to see them?"



I have to go to fashion week,

So I have some changes that I'm going to make to it.

I could go for a bike ride.

I need to check my medical insurance policy first.

-You tell me when. -All right. You ready?

This foresty retreat in the middle of the city.

So when did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was 12.

I was a dancer.

I did ballet,

And yeah, I started designing my dance costumes.

-You did? -Uh-huh.

I grew up drawing.

I had a crayon in my hand as soon as I could pick one up.

And I was always drawing dresses.

One thing led to another.

I realized that, hey, I could have a job

Being a fashion designer when I grow up.

And I feel so proud that that's what I am now.

It's a dream come true.

Well, leanne, I am so grateful to you

For letting me come.

I mean, to experience portland like this?

I know. I'm so glad that you got to come here.

We were all just like, [takes deep breath]

To see tim and to see what he thinks of my collection.

I'm hoping that it'll give me the second wind that I need

To crank through the rest of this stuff.

So here is what I've been working on thus far.



So talk to me about your overall point of view

With this collection.



One of the things I think I'm really good at

Is mixing different textures,

So I definitely wanted to make that a large part

Of what this collection's about.

So this is the wedding dress.

I didn't want it to just

Feel like any old wedding dress,

So I thought it'd be kind of cool to do

This kind of asymmetrical

Kind of swooping thing.

-Can I be blunt? -Yeah.

I think, for me,

This looks like it popped out.

Why not give it some stability, you know?



I just want you to think about it, that's all.



That it didn't need to be as asymmetrical at the top.

But it still has to feel like me,

And I think it speaks to who I am as a designer.

This one here, what I'm really thinking about doing,

Is, like, finishing it

And making them sleeves

And putting, um, like, a-- like, a cuff.

This is a lot of look.

I think you need to start thinking

About editing.



Using all these different elements appropriately.

Six of the looks aren't even made yet,

So I still have a lot of work to do.

You want this to be believable.

Okay, yeah.

Can I still meet your family and friends?

Oh, my god, definitely.

So it's just the two of you.

Ani, when jerell was little,

Where did you think he was going to go and be?

Actually, I knew it was gonna be something

That had to do with creativity.

I was, like, four, and, like,

I was like, oh, a tube sock.

And so I thought to myself,

If I cut the bottom off,

Then that's a dress with a train.

[Laughter]



And it was kind of, like, during the height

Of all, like, the g*ng violence

And all that, and, I mean, we lived, like,

Two blocks from where the riots started.

I mean, they burned the liquor store down

Right next to my house.

After that, my parents did everything in their power

To kind of get their kids out of the ghetto

And give us a better opportunity.

My dad's not here, but, like,

He's really important too.

He had to work, so...



I didn't see that much of him

Because he was providing for his family

The best way he knew how,

Which was, like, driving trucks.

And, like, my whole childhood,

He experienced in a sleeper cab of a truck,

Like, to provide the best life that he could

For, like, me and my sister,

And I thank him for that now.

I give you and dad credit

For allowing me the freedom to really be creative.

They're the reason why I'm willing to take chances

And risks, and that I'm so confident

In who I am as a person.

And I'm so grateful for that.

[Laughter]

Ani, how do you feel about all this?

I am very, very proud of him.

The fact that you're actually reaching out toward your dreams

Is, like, a very, very wonderful thing.



To bryant park, not making it

Is not even an option.

I'm gonna put on one hell of a show.

I've come this far, and there's no turning back.

Who's working on her collection in brooklyn.

I hoping that he loves my line

That I've worked so hard on.

This is such a classic new york apartment.

-This is great. -I know.



Even though it seems like I don't, I do.

This is my grandma.

She was a calendar girl.

What a great photo.

And what a great dress.

I know.



In the '40s and had a ridiculous style.

She was fun-loving and carefree.

I got a lot of my traits from her.

She died a couple months ago,

So, I mean, it's hard.

I wish she was alive to see what I was doing.

She would... Be really proud.

So...

Here you can see the color palette.

I was inspired by

Painting the roses red type of thing.

-Oh, from alice in wonderland. -Yes.

-Okay, I understand. -All right.

You mean, you yourself were painting and coloring.

-Yeah, I painted. -Okay.

The fabrics.

It's silk.

Fab.

And then this is,

You know, ropes at the neck.

One second. Talk to me about the ropes.

I'm into ropes.

I just think about people hanging themselves.

Did that never cross your mind?

No.

Can you wear this?

Oh, absolutely. Why wouldn't you?

I have to scratch my head, thinking,

Where is this coming from?

Where is she going with this?

My dad was a tugboat captain,

So I use a lot of ropes in my line,

And that kind of comes from my roots.

-Kenley. -Yeah.

-This is spectacular. -Really?

Wow.

I know.

Do you think this should be the grand finale?

Yeah.

-I'm just really impressed with you. -Aw!

You're gonna make me cry, tim.

It's been really hard. It really has.

The materials kind of tell me what they want to become.

This is ambitious, but you've done a lot with it.

And I like the whole spirit and flavor of this wedding.

It makes me want to go.

Is play off the colors of the stones

In the bust of the wedding gown.

'Cause this just looks sloppy.

I was thinking about, like,

Hand-sewing this on with this yarn,

Like around the green here.

Technical piece,

But it wasn't making music.

So for my bridesmaid's dress, I'm gonna put in

A bit more of the color.

And I'm doing

The wave detail emphasis on the top.

It's gonna be cuter.

They're each beautiful dresses.

I just feel at this point, they're in competition.

Checking out the judges' faces,

It seems like they like it.

I think it speaks to who I am,

And I think it definitely reads "wedding gown."

And then the bridesmaid's dress is blue, it's iridescent.

And the sash is actually the same silk taffeta

As the wedding dress.

It's beautiful. I'm very proud.



I was blown away.

I'm gonna make that exact same wedding dress

And I'm gonna wear it at my wedding.

The bridesmaid's dress fits in beautifully.

It's a dress that any girl would want to wear.

I think I have a huge chance

Of going to bryant park.



Is really simple chic and fresh,

And I hope the judges see korto.

I'm not really out there like kenley,

Or regal like jerell, and I don't have

The kind of aesthetic that leanne has.

I have my own flavor,

And hopefully, that'll be appreciated.
