It must be beach.

Being from California,

the first thing
that pops into my head is the beach.

Oh, we're at the beach.

There's Santa Monica pier right there.

We don't have oceans in Minnesota,

so it's kind of nice
to see the ocean for the first time.

So we're walking down the beach,

and we see Tim Gunn
in sandals and sunglasses,

but still in a blazer.

Good morning, designers,

and welcome to the heart
of California, the beach.

[Cheering]
Yeah.

As I'm certain you've anticipated,

we're going to explore
beach and surf wear.

Today, California surf wear
has an identity of its own,

one that's evolved
beyond the Golden State

and has transitioned
from sea and sand to the street.

These gorgeous young women behind me
personify surf culture and style.

For this challenge, you are to create
a fun and fashionable surf wear look.

It's critical that this look
be totally infused

with your point of view as a designer.

And as you all know by now,

it's also critical that you wow the judges

with impeccable
craftsmanship and style.

And for this Garnier challenge,

you're going to wow them
with the perfect hairstyle on your model.

And here to tell you more about that
is Philip Carreon from Garnier.

At Garnier, we believe
that no design is complete

without the perfect hairstyle,

so my team and I are going
to get together with you

and create a gorgeous
just-off-the-beach look for your models.

because it really is the format

It helps to have

Being comfortable is really big for me.

I don't want to be restricted.

They like functionality
over actual fashion.

What are your, like, inspirations
or favorite colors and things like that?

I think a lot of surf fashion

draws from the colors
that you would see

in a sunset or a tropical reef.

This is a Brazilian bikini.
Totally different.

Being with Mitchell,

I feel like I have this giant bull's eye

painted directly in
the middle of my face.

He's been in the bottom two twice.

Even though he's the leader,
I feel like I need to step in

and give a little guidance
for what we should be doing.

kind of an idea in our head

to do basically a dress
that turns into a swimsuit.

'Cause right now,

it looks a little bit like zebra.

Like, animalistic,
which we'll get rid of.

My vision right now
is an amazing silhouette.

I'm going to bring back
the wraparound pant,

and underneath I'm doing
an amazing bathing suit,

which I'm going to hand-dye the fabric

and then do, like,
an ombre of macramé.

It has to be perfect.

why is the top like that?"

Exactly. No reason...

They're going to look for every reason.

The choice of fabrics

I think that's really fun and amazing,

but I can't imagine
how we're going to be able

to fit in another piece

and have it look the way
it needs to look

to be avant-garde for the runway.

is provocative for my taste.

I know that Nicolas
is inspired by the sea,

so maybe this is a sea woman

That's what that outfit reminds me of,

and I think that's what inspired this.

and this was all of a piece,

and suddenly all that sophistication
went away for me.

whole waves-water illusion

of just very, very organic.

So I think the best thing
to give this a little more pop

is to dye the fabric.

I'm dyeing this by hand.

I want to ensure that both models
are fully dressed in looks

so that you're not just instantly
disqualified.

But we thought this was
going to be a little too easy.

to make an avant-garde look

as a companion to your original design.

So I'm really looking forward
to what you have created.

All right, let's start the show.

[Epperson]
The beachwear look... I'm pleased with it.

It's flowing. It's constructed well.

[Qristyl] We're showing two
looks, and they're two looks

that are just not strong enough.

The whole girl's butt is out.

There are a few flaws,

but, you know,
it was a quick put-together.

[Johnny] When our two looks
come down the runway,

I'm completely at ease.
I'm calm. I love them.

I definitely know that Irina and I

are gonna be
in contention for winning.

[Irina]
I'm a little bit apprehensive

about seeing the avant-garde look

because I know it's not perfect.

Obviously, I want the judges
to focus on the concept

and not so much on, like,
everything that's off.

[Mitchell]
Our beachwear look

looks fabulous coming
down the runway.

I don't think the judges
are going to know

that that dress was made
in 45 minutes.

[Ra'mon]
The avant-garde piece, hands down,

I feel like it truly embodies me.

I think it's the stronger of the two pieces.

I think it's fantastic.

[Shirin] I think me and Carol Hannah
definitely worked evenly.

She's a hard worker,
so I really appreciate that.

I think it was a good partnership.

[Carol Hannah]
I feel really confident

in what Shirin and I have made.

I think our avant-garde look
is one of the better ones,

if not the best one in the room.

[AIthea]
In almost a kind of hidden way,

it's not just the final garment
that's being put out there

but how you're able
to collaborate and put it together.

[Louise]
The avant-garde look is just spectacular.

The pins and zippers and glitter

and the cascade skirt just sort of
is floating out behind her,

so I'm very pleased.

[Nicolas]
As I'm watching the garments,

it's pretty interesting

because they're both my designs.

But I truly can say that I
would not have been able

to actually put them together
without Gordana's help.

[Gordana]
The avant-garde look

I'm having mixed feelings about.

But then, on the other hand,

I totally believe in Nicolas.

Maybe I'm not
as adventurous as he is.

[Logan]
My overall vision for the first look

is almost exactly how I wanted it.

I'm just really excited

to find out what the judges actually think

and get some feedback
on our designs.

It's fantastic
that Logan and I are able to collaborate

and really show our own style
within the same garment.

And his rock and roll side
and my play on volume...

It really worked out.

Basically, the inspiration started
from a moment on the beach

when the wave broke on the shore.

A pile of seaweed washed up,

and it looked so beautiful to me,

just the way
the blues and the greens

and the browns sort of intertwined.

that we saw here with the garter belt
and with the cutout,

about the fabrics that he picks.

Obviously, there were a lot
of problems between the two,

although the top part of the first dress,

the printed dress,

was pretty, and it fit well.
