Previously on Project Runway...
Fashion is news.
This is the fabric for your challenge.
Our materials is newspaper. Yeah.
It's definitely risky doing a coat
because I don't know if the sleeves
are gonna happen or not.
What's gonna happen is the birds
are actually gonna look like
they're holding the dress up.
It may look like
the birds attacked the dress.
Irena, you are the winner
of this challenge.
- [Applause]
- [Irina] Thank you.
It was a red mess.
Thanks, Nicolas. That's really nice.
Throw me right under the bus. Jerk.
That means, Johnny, you're out.
This is Project Runway.
- Of course I'm the best.
- Let's do this.
The search for the next
big fashion designer.
- I have to win.
- You better watch out.
Sixteen designers.
- I'm in. You're out.
- Don't get cut.
Three finalists will make it
to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
I'm the best designer here.
I have no fear.
- Make it work.
- That's my line.
But only one can be the winner.
This is my dream.
For these 16 designers,
Project Runway
is the chance of a lifetime.
The winner of Project Runway will receive
a fashion spread
in marie claire magazine,
a Paris vacation courtesy of Evian,
and $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris
to start their own line.
- [Logan] Here we go again.
- [Ra'mon] I know.
It's kind of weird waking up,
and there's two empty beds.
Oh, Malvin. Oh, Johnny.
You know, I wish Johnny luck,
but I'm kind of glad that he's gone,
because I think
it makes the competition
a little more serious for everyone.
I think it's gonna be a lot quieter now.
- We can focus on design.
- Not on comforting Johnny.
but when it comes down to it,
I want to be in Bryant Park.
- Are you ready, Irina?
- [Irina] The competition
is definitely getting stiffer.
Of course I'd like to win again.
But in the next two or three challenges,
it's gonna get real tough.
I don't even know what to think
about the next challenge.
I was in the bottom three
on the last challenge.
I was shocked, to tell you the truth.
Is it time to go?
- Let's go.
- [Mutters]
- Hello.
- [All] Hi.
- How are you all doing?
- [All] Good.
Irina, you won the last challenge.
You have immunity this week,
and you cannot be eliminated.
I'm sure that you're ready to hear
about your next challenge.
Yes.
Well, we are in Los Angeles,
and it's about time to get you
out of that sewing room
to see what this town
is most known for...
moviemaking.
- [Cheering]
- [Nicolas] I am so excited.
I've done a lot of costumes for film.
This might be very,
very interesting for me.
Tim is waiting for you at Stage 6
to tell you about your next challenge.
Good luck, and I'll see you
on the runway. Bye.
[All]
Bye.
Designers, welcome to
a real Hollywood soundstage.
It pretty surreal to be at the soundstage.
It's kind of cool.
Please welcome Collier Strong,
consulting makeup artist
for L'Oréal Paris.
Collier is my partner in presenting you
with today's challenge.
Tim has a velvet bag with him.
So we're wondering,
is this a team challenge?
What the hell's going on here?
We are in Los Angeles,
the heart of the moviemaking industry.
This is where films
and their characters come to life.
So for this challenge,
you will select a film genre
and invent a character
who lives in that genre.
[Cheering]
I have five cinematic genres
from which you are to choose.
They are action-adventure,
film noir, science fiction,
period piece, and Western.
[Nicolas]
Oh, God, what if I get stuck with Western?
Please, please, please
don't get stuck with Western.
Western would be
a little bit tough for me,
because I'm not really American.
L'Oréal Paris and I have a longstanding
history with Project Runway,
and we also have a long relationship
with award-winning actresses
who have all played characters
in every one of these genres.
So I'm here to help you bring these
characters to life through makeup.
Irina, since you were
the winner of the last challenge,
- you get to choose first.
- Okay.
You may choose any of these.
- I think I'll go with film noir.
- Excellent.
So for the remaining ten of you,
we have two cards for each.
So as I call your name,
come forward
and please select one from Collier.
- All right? Logan.
- Hey.
Action-adventure.
- Carol Hannah.
- Action-adventure.
All right. Action-adventure
is now gone, guys.
- Whoo-hoo.
- Ra'mon.
Without a doubt, science fiction.
I grew up watching sci-fi.
I know all about Star Trek
and Star Wars
and everything in between,
so I think it's a good fit for me.
- Louise.
- I, of course, am going to pick film noir.
- That has your name written all over it.
- Oh, yes.
- Althea.
- I also am gonna pick film noir.
- Gordana.
- I like to take the period piece.
- Nicolas.
- Science fiction.
- Christopher.
- Whoo!
[Christopher]
There's Western, and there's period piece.
I don't want to work with denim.
I don't want spurs.
I don't want to do a gingham dress.
Period piece.
We have two designers remaining,
and we have two Westerns.
- [Laughter]
- [Shirin] I have to do Western.
Ugh!
Cool. Thanks.
- I wanted period...
- Oh, no.
...but I was last again,
and I was stuck with Western.
All right, designers.
Collier will be consulting with you later.
And we're going back
to the workroom to sketch.
- Come on, everybody.
- See you later.
[All]
Bye.
[Tim]
All right, designers.
As I can tell, you've discovered
there is a dossier for each of you
according to your cinematic genre.
All right? So you have
then we're going shopping at Mood,
where you'll have a budget of $150.
And you have until midnight
tonight to complete your looks.
It's a one-day challenge,
which is crazy.
You're inventing a character.
Who is she, what does she do,
and why is she wearing
the clothes that she's wearing?
Okay, everyone,
your 30 minutes starts now.
I will be back. Thank you.
See you, Tim.
At first, I was like,
"Western. Hmm? John Wayne."
It just wasn't flowing.
I just tried to figure out
every female actress
that was in a Western movie
and how to make her interesting.
Western. I mean, we don't
even have a cowboy hat.
So I decided to go
a completely different route
and do, like, a saloon girl.
I'm trying to think saloon girl.
Red and black or pink and black?
But I don't want to look
like... like she's...
- Who am I kidding? It is a costume.
- [Laughter]
I am doing sexy assassin.
I know I can crank out a big,
giant dress really quickly,
but I really want to stretch myself
in this challenge and do something else.
Do you want to see what I'm doing?
Do you want to compare notes?
I'm thinking it's beneficial for both of us.
No, I do, too.
I think that Carol Hannah
is the only female
that I really connected with.
I don't know.
Mine's almost, like, military-esque slash...
- Okay.
- Like, swordfighter.
She's been a lot of fun getting to know.
She's nice to have around.
- Like it?
- Yeah.
I don't know who decided that
Logan and I should have tables
next to each other.
Because it is really distracting.
He's really hot.
[Laughing]
I am a diehard Trekkie.
I am, like, totally fascinated
by the idea of, like, science fiction.
I'm excited.
I am a daydreamer.
I daydream all the time,
and I'm always in faraway lands
and fantasies and everything.
I think that's what separates me
from the other designers
is I can bring in elements
from the costume industry
and mix them into my ready-to-wear.
[Louise]
When I think film noir...
I mean, it's specific
to the late '30s, early '40s.
I really like the sort of
femme fatale woman.
Very sort of, like, classic, edgy.
From last challenge
and coming into this one,
it reminded me of how good I am
at doing these "wow" pieces.
Do I really need the immunity?
I have a hunch that I could
live without it right now.
[Christopher]
A period piece can be
some other era or time period
where there's
an epic drama going on.
I can choose the time period.
It could be the '80s.
It could be the Roman time.
I'm afraid the judges might not get
my interpretation of period,
but I'm hoping that
they're along for the ride.
All right, designers. Let's go to Mood.
So you have your budget of $150,
and you have 30 minutes.
Okay? Go, go, go.
Up until this point in the competition,
I have not been in the top three.
I have been, you know,
in the bottom three.
- [Bleep]
- I want to be experimental.
I want to be daring. I'm gonna do it.
Ew, no.
$200 a yard? That's crazy.
Designers, 15 minutes.
I really want to go with a brocade.
Unfortunately,
brocades are $30 a yard,
and I need 7 yards,
so it's out of the question.
[Muttering]
Five minutes.
- This is $8.00 a yard.
- Okay. That's a winner.
- Let's do about 5 yards of it.
- Oh, I need glue.
I can't reach it. Somebody help.
That's it, everybody. Time.
- Thank you, Mood.
- [All] Thanks, Mood.
[Ra'mon] We have to complete
this challenge in one day.
Do I wish we had two days?
Hell, yeah, I do.
I love whoever stole my bobbin.
Epperson, what would have been
your first genre choice?
Period.
[Epperson]
I wanted period,
but I figured out a way
to design Western as a period,
because Western really is a period.
My concept is a beautiful lady,
and her husband's off to w*r,
and she has to take care of the land,
so she has to become a lot tougher.
Has anybody seen
my pink and white scissors?
I picked the '20s,
because that was exactly the time
where the woman started
getting more emancipated.
Does anybody have
any extra bobbins?
Like, I purposely filled a bobbin up
with this thread because I need it.
Sabotage.
So guess what, guys.
I'm doing another white outfit.
- Tell me your story.
- There's three sort of queens
who, like, watch over the universe,
and they all reside on Orion's Belt.
One of them decides that she wants
to rule the whole universe.
- Is that your girl?
- Yeah, that's my girl.
That's freaking amazing.
My concept is to design
a jumpsuit that depicts
a human-alien hybrid.
Green, reptilian.
That's amazing.
I think I'm on a good path with this.
[Louise]
Oh, what the hell?
Somebody took my damn bobbin.
- I'm tired of people doing that.
- We've been dealing with that all day.
- Who did this?
- I don't know.
[Carol Hannah]
The vibe in the workroom
is a little bit more competitive
than it has been in the past.
You know, that's another factor
in this whole competition...
is there's talent,
there's a little bit of luck,
and then there's,
can you take the pressure?
Who is the evildoer?
- I think it's Shirin.
- It was Shirin.
I am not the bobbin stealer.
I'm using black.
Why would I steal her green?
This is like its own
little detective movie.
Dd [humming suspenseful tune]
Dd [both humming suspenseful tune]
What's your story, Louise?
I'm not exactly sure yet.
[Nicolas]
I always think about that.
Like, who I'm designing for,
who my client is.
And I don't think she's
really thought about it.
- Still working on her story?
- Yeah. Still working on that.
I am really worried for her because
I don't think she really has a concept.
You know, you can't just
dilly-dally anymore.
Like, you really need to know
what your point of view is.
Coming up on Project Runway...
This could be sublime,
or it could be a big, hot mess.
Are you thinking
this is a little too safe?
- At the moment, yeah.
- Oh, my God! Oh, my God!
I want you to look around this room.
Somebody's going home.
Looking around the room,
there's a lot of talent still here,
so I think what
it's gonna come down to
is who interprets
the challenge the best.
I am nervous, nervous, nervous,
because I still have
a lot of appliquéing to do.
You know I still have to
stitch all that on, right?
- Oh, it's nothing.
- No.
- My God!
- I just want to send down
the runway everything perfect.
As long as you love it,
and you know you did
what you wanted to do...
Then it's just matter of style.
I mean, matter of taste.
The bottom line is
I have to be confident.
But you never know
with the judges, so...
Designers, I'm here
to check in with you.
I'm gonna start with Gordana.
Your genre... it's period piece.
The '20s. She discovers oil,
and this is the first time
that she's coming out in a society.
- How old is she?
- She's in her 30s.
On that topic...
We need to make it
a little bit higher up.
- Higher?
- Do you think?
I'm thinking lower.
[Irina] I just don't see Gordana
being at Bryant Park.
The rest of us are on
a different sort of level,
and I don't think
she could compete with that.
- Thank you, Gordana. Okay.
- Thank you, Tim.
- [Tim] Christopher.
- Hey, Tim.
- Talk to me.
- There's this vampire bride.
Okay.
All right. It's the 1800s.
It's Paris, France.
- The bustle's very Victorian.
- Mm-hmm.
- I would reference that.
- Okay.
The top is gonna be this halter...
- She has bare arms?
- Yeah.
I mean, I love
everything about this. I really do.
But that's not very Victorian...
- or 1800s.
- Not very Victorian.
Tim is truly a mentor.
He'll try to steer you
in the right direction
without telling you
exactly what you should do.
- Thank you, Tim.
- Okay.
Epperson. All I can say
is Annie Get Your g*n.
Okay. Okay, good.
That's it.
You know, I was a little concerned
about ruffles being too something else
other than Western.
The ruffles have
such a profound visual impact.
I mean, I'm really
seduced by them.
- Carry on.
- Yes, yes. I will. Thank you.
- Ra'mon.
- Hello, Tim.
- Talk to me.
- I'm gonna do a jumpsuit.
I want to get it so that
the fabric itself almost looks skin-like.
It does. This could be sublime,
or it could be a big, hot mess.
I do like to think outside of the box.
It's really costume-based,
so why go safe with it?
- You have a lot of work ahead of you.
- Yes, I do.
I will leave you alone.
- Thank you, Ra'mon. Okay?
- Thank you so much.
- Louise.
- Hi, Tim.
- So talk to me.
- This is the underslip of the dress.
Okay.
And the sheath is actually
going to look like this,
with mitered pieces of this lace.
Beautiful. Let me tell you this.
What I love most about you
is what you can achieve
with subtlety and nuance.
That does not hold up
very well on the runway.
Some of my designs are minimal.
They're not standing out
amongst the crowd.
I need to pull out all the stops
and make it show-worthy.
Take the DNA
that you have as a designer
- and push it.
- Thank you, Tim.
- Nicolas.
- Hi, Tim.
- Talk to me.
- So I'm obviously doing Western.
[Laughter]
- Obviously.
- Obviously.
- No, I'm doing sci-fi/fantasy.
- Okay.
My character... she's a villain.
- A villain in white.
- Yes.
What I love about this piece
is mainly the collar
because the light
is gonna shine through it.
I want you to exaggerate
what you want to do.
Are you thinking
this is a little too safe?
- At the moment, yeah.
- I totally get it.
I can go much bigger.
- Do it.
- Okay.
- Sounds good. Thank you, Tim.
- Thank you.
[Tim]
Designers, I am enthralled
and inspired by
what each one of you is doing.
But I'm also reminded,
somebody's going home.
So I want you
to look around this room
and assess where your own work is
in relation to other designers,
and just be as ambitious
as you can be.
[Nicolas]
I'm a little worried about Ra'mon.
When I think of sci-fi,
I think of beautiful queens
and really gorgeous women.
You know, not Godzilla.
But I can't wait to see
what the results will be.
[Tim]
I am about to send in your models.
They are here for two
simultaneous purposes...
L'Oréal Paris makeup consultations
with Collier Strong
and fittings with you.
I'm sending them in.
[Chattering]
Yeah, you're probably...
"What the hell's going?"
No, I'm excited.
[Ra'mon] Get her fitted, and
then I got all kind of leather.
- Hi.
- I'm walking into the consultation
with Kaylin, for her look.
- Hi, Kaylin. Have a seat here.
- You're the best.
[Irina] I mean, the makeup
is key in this challenge.
- We're doing film noir.
- Fantastic. It's a very dark eye
and a very high, thin, raised brow.
That's beautiful.
[Camera shutter clicks]
It's very fantasy.
It's a costume challenge,
but it's also a L'Oréal challenge.
The whole thing should be
just, like... just dusted.
She looks like
just right out of a fantasy.
[Shutter clicks]
I really need your help
with '20s-era makeup.
It's a classic look.
Very sexy. Very dark red lip.
That's it. Thank you so much.
And so what did you
have in your mind?
- Something harsh.
- Yeah.
- But sexy, right? Really dramatic.
- Yeah.
- Really bold.
- [Shutter clicks]
Awesome. Thank you.
Oh, I don't know.
This is looking very
Kermit the Frog gone wrong.
Oh, I don't think
this is gonna work out.
I think I was wrong.
It's just not what
I thought it would be.
I think I need to make
a dress out of the leather.
- Or a coat or a vest kind of thing. A coat?
- This is...
Unfortunately, with two hours left,
I need to start from scratch.
- I'm gonna let you work it out.
- Okay.
It's gonna be gorgeous.
- Yeah. I hope so.
- It will be.
Thanks, honey.
It's not like there's another option.
I have to do it.
[Chattering]
You have something in your mind
and it doesn't come to fruition.
It sucks.
I sure am. I have no other choice.
I can't send something that's absolutely,
insanely horrible down the runway.
[Nicolas]
This is one of the most difficult things
I've been through so far in my life.
The challenges are getting
more and more difficult,
and, you know, I've almost lost it
a couple of times.
Oh, my God! Oh, my God!
Other designers... you can really tell it's
really getting to them also.
I'm a little stressed. I'm not gonna lie.
I just have a lot to do
in a short period of time.
I'm just gonna make
the best darn saloon dress I can
and hope that I'm still here tomorrow.
- [Gasps] Ow! Ow, ow, ow, ow!
- Are you okay?
[Louise]
When you're rushing around last minute,
there are always gonna be
cuts and scrapes and bruises.
Man, that went right through my fingernail.
But it's all been worth it.
I think I have a really pretty dress.
I really hope that I'm in
the top three for this one.
And then this will have,
like, pieces that go up.
- I like it.
- Yeah?
- It's cool.
- I totally had to save it.
You know you can do it.
If I'm gonna go home
off of this challenge,
- I want to give it a fight.
- Oh, my God.
But I can only do what I have time to do.
We're done.
Let's go home.
- [Laughter]
- Let's go.
Coming up on Project Runway...
Move it.
Workroom is pretty crazy this morning.
There's no turning back
at this point. It's too late.
People are getting really cranky.
Seriously, no talking. Working.
It's the morning of the runway,
and I am pretty panicked
because my dress
is not completed at all.
I will give you my newborn
for a hot glue g*n right now.
You know who has
a hot glue g*n? Gordana.
What do you have left to do on your dress?
Do you have a lot to do?
I was hoping I will be able to make,
like, a cigarette holder,
but I have enough to worry
about finishing everything.
I don't want to think about anything else,
you know?
So, the first thing that Tim Gunn says
is this could be sensational
or it can be a hot mess.
I changed my design
because I feel like
I need to take it to the next level,
as Tim put it.
Ready?
- Girls are ready?
- Let's go.
All right.
[Squealing]
The workroom is pretty crazy
this morning.
[Laughter]
Just finalizing everything
to get my final look finished.
I know that the judges
are gonna love my design.
I don't think I'm gonna
be in the top three.
I feel like I'll rank
somewhere in the middle,
mostly because I chose to take a risk.
I'm happy with the design,
but it's not exactly what I envisioned.
But it's too late.
There's no turning back at this point.
[Tim]
Good morning, designers.
As you know,
your models are here.
You have two hours to send them
to the Garnier hair studio
and the L'Oréal Paris makeup room.
Use the Macy's accessory wall
thoughtfully, all right?
Work like there's no tomorrow
because for one of you, there won't be.
All right? I'll see you later.
[Chattering]
- Oh, look at you, gorgeous.
- How are you?
Time was not on our side
in this challenge.
A lot of dresses
are, like, halfway done.
People are getting really cranky.
Please, Lord, let me not sew
my fingers together today.
All right. Seriously,
no talking. Working.
The '20s are very much
into accessories,
so that's the huge part
of my challenge.
It looks so simple,
but it took me forever to make.
Trust me, I've worked with
this material before.
I know exactly what
you're talking about.
This is really
gonna be a tough one.
I think this is gonna be
the toughest for the judges,
because everybody really
stuck to their movie genres.
I think you can see my
signature work in the garment,
so I totally doubt
if I'm going home today.
Do you think you can hit
some of this
with a little bit
of sheen there, okay?
Is there any way that you can,
like, trim the back of that?
- That's a great idea.
- I just want volume.
Oh, you're beautiful!
- Damn!
- Cool.
Designers, ten minutes,
we are walking to the runway.
- All right? Rally.
- All right.
Looking around the room,
it looks like Ra'mon is really stressed out,
because I know he started his outfit
two hours before we left the night before.
And Irina's also really hurrying
to get her dress together.
Move it.
- Damn!
- You're, like, accident prone.
Designers and models,
the time has come.
We've got to go, Irina.
I finish it in the final seconds,
but I could've, of course, worked on it
for another five hours if I could.
[Tim]
Thank you.
Coming up on Project Runway...
I really don't like the dress.
It's too safe.
It's not special enough.
I'm bored.
It looks like a snooze-fest.
Hello.
- [All] Hi.
- Welcome to the runway.
As you know, in fashion,
one day you're in,
and the next day, you're out.
There are 11 of you here,
and after tonight, there will be 10.
This week,
you chose a movie genre
and were asked to create a character
and their look from that genre.
You had $150 and one day
to put it together.
I look forward to seeing
what you've done.
All right. Let's meet the judges.
First, we have American designer
John Varvatos.
Editor for Marie Claire magazine,
- Zoe Glassner.
- Hi.
And Oscar-nominated
costume designer,
Arianne Phillips.
- Welcome.
- Hi.
We will score your designs
as they come down the runway.
One of you will be named the winner,
and one of you will be out.
Let's start the show.
Kalyn looks like a film noir actress.
She looks like she just
stepped off a set.
I am so happy
that she's able to do that.
'Cause it needs that. It's a costume.
And I just wanna run up
and give her a big kiss.
As my garment
is coming down the runway,
it hits you, like, wow.
As soon as she takes the jacket off,
it just looks really good.
It's really hot.
This is a pretty big stretch for me,
so I'm happy that I
was able to pull it off.
I'm watching my model, Ebony,
walk down the runway.
I told her to give it a little dance.
She goes all out.
It looks really good.
Everything seems to just pop
and just look amazing.
My garment really
created this bride,
and Katie was able to put forth
what this woman would look like
on the runway.
I've really taken something
that could still stand
as a piece in my own runway show.
Watching Celine
walking down the runway...
it definitely is me,
and it did tell a story.
But I really pushed the envelope,
and I'm nervous,
because it could go either way.
I could completely b*mb,
or I could actually win this.
I definitely feel like
I've created a film noir outfit
and stayed true to that sort of feeling...
the era, the '40s.
Tanisha is playing the role so well.
It really seems like a movie
instead of the catwalk.
As she's walking down the runway,
there's this feeling of joy.
The placement of certain things
isn't exactly what I wanted,
so I just have to be able
to convey my story to the judges.
I think it's a really pretty dress,
but it's just not as show-stopping
as some of the others.
I wanted to do '40s and mix
a little '20s in with it,
but it just didn't come across well
as either one of the time periods.
I'm totally excited.
Matar... she was, like, amazing.
Such a nice connection.
And we both just ran with it.
You could see that she was
a tattered Western lady from that time.
I'm proud of what I put out there.
I definitely have created a character
that I wanted to create.
I am very confident,
and I'm very happy with the outcome.
But you never know with the judges.
I love how powerful the look is.
You really know
that she's been in battle.
But I was going for something that was
gonna be dramatic on the runway,
and I feel like I did that.
If I call your name,
please step forward.
Logan.
Carol Hannah.
Shirin.
Irina.
Althea.
If I have called your name,
congratulations.
Your scores have qualified you
to move on to the next challenge.
You can leave the runway.
The remaining designers have
the highest and the lowest scores.
One of you will be named the winner,
and one of you will be out.
Let's bring out your models.
Okay, I would like
to start with Gordana.
My challenge was to do a time period.
Obviously I chose
the flapper style... the '20s.
You can see there's a lot of work
and a lot of detail put into it.
I don't know that it's
a signature piece of her own.
I, too, question the specialness.
I'm just not sure that it's as memorable
as maybe it could've been.
- Okay.
- [Glassner] There is not doubt,
Gordana, of your skill as a dressmaker.
The one thing
that I don't see from that
is how that differs from
my great-grandmother's dress.
I don't feel that you brought
anything new to the table.
What I don't see is your eyes,
your point of view.
I see your hands but not your eyes.
Okay.
Nicolas.
Your genre was science fiction.
Tell us about your character.
She is one of the three sister queens
who control the universe
and is thinking
about overthrowing the other two sisters.
Unfortunately, the other
two sisters find out,
and they banish her to a crypt
where she's frozen for eternity.
[Laughter]
Well, I love your story.
I think you really got into the character.
You did a great job
of taking this evil queen
and making her beautiful.
I think it's fabulous.
I knew exactly who she was.
I said,
"Oh, there's the ice queen."
Working on a film, you need to work
closely with the makeup people.
So, obviously, you did,
and you really thought about it.
I'm sure this will
photograph beautifully.
- So well done.
- Thank you.
It's so cool, Nicolas.
I really, really like it.
I wrote "Clever, bold, and risky."
- Bravo.
- Thank you so much. Thank you.
Okay, Louise,
tell us about your character.
Your genre was film noir.
I wanted to make her
an aspiring film actress.
She's going to an industry party
where it was expected that they were
to dress in costume as another decade.
So she's going as, like,
'40s version of a flapper.
I think it's interesting
that you have a decade within a decade.
And for me,
that's what this looks like...
a little bit of a convoluted mess.
I just think it looks a little cheap.
This is gonna sound harsh,
but it looks like a French maid uniform,
or something like
in a plastic bag at the store.
The fabric doesn't look luxe to me.
It looks like a snooze-fest. I'm bored.
I just am not in love with this look.
It doesn't come across special at all.
I'm sure you put a lot of work into it.
But if it was supposed
to be something for a film,
there's nothing strong about it.
And the detail doesn't read.
And it doesn't seem
to have a style, to me.
Well, I appreciate your criticism,
'cause I've been wanting
to get on stage,
whether or not
I was in the top or bottom
- just so I could hear, like, the feedback.
- I just think
those kind of challenges
where you can be more innovative...
- Mm-hmm.
- You know, it's for a movie.
And you have the freedom
of thinking about
the most craziest character
as you please.
Okay.
Christopher,
your genre was a period piece.
First of all, I'm not a history major,
so get ready for
the historical inaccuracies.
- [Laughter]
- Um...
All right.
She's at her wedding day,
and she has to make
a big decision at that moment.
She has a secret,
and that's she's a vampire.
She could get married
and curse her husband
by turning him into a vampire,
or she could run away
and never see him again,
and therefore, hurt him as well.
First of all,
I really like the way you think,
because when you're
starting off a collection,
you wanna create your own story,
your own muse,
and you did that very well here.
- Very, very strong.
- Thank you.
I think it's really well done.
That neck is so elegant.
I love the gems.
I think it's so exquisite.
And I love that
you made it modern in a way,
like something
that I haven't seen before.
There's "wow" factor with this piece.
And that detail in the back,
for me, is fabulous,
'cause we can't forget
the over-the-shoulder shots.
And that would just be
a fabulous exiting out of the church.
It's definitely worthy
of being photographed for film.
Thank you.
Ra'mon, your genre was science fiction.
Yes. Her name is Lola.
She has left her home planet,
where all of her people are reptiles,
to come to Earth,
and is going to this fabulous party
to quench her
insatiable desire for men.
[Laughter]
- [Glassner] I like the story.
- Mm-hmm.
I like that you
really thought about it,
but I really don't like the dress.
Okay.
It looks, to me,
a little like Swamp Thing.
A B movie or something.
I wrote down "Shoddily made."
Okay.
Well, I give you credit.
You took the sci-fi.
It's not an easy area to design for.
But after that,
you missed the whole mark.
It looks a little bit like a school project.
Hot green mess.
That was definitely not
what I was going after.
You're a good designer.
We've seen some great things from you.
It's just really hard to see
that you can actually sew in this outfit.
- Yeah.
- Ra'mon, I sympathize with you.
You chose one of the hardest materials
to work with... leather.
You sabotaged yourself a little bit
with biting off such a big project.
I will be honest.
I did have a design before,
and it failed me,
so I decided to change my design.
You know, I really want to like it
'cause I think
that you thought perhaps
in a more ambitious way
than other people did
in this challenge.
- So I appreciate that.
- Thank you.
Epperson,
your genre was Western.
Tell us about your character.
This character... her husband went out
to fight, like for the w*r.
Since he went away,
she's taken care of the cattle,
the land, her children.
There's a g*n under here somewhere,
just in case.
- [Laughter]
- And she's just really, like, in charge.
And just, like, naturally beauty
and tattered at the same time.
I think it's just fabulous.
It's very creative.
I really appreciated that
you thought outside the box.
Obviously women didn't wear
denim dresses at that time.
But it works.
This certainly has bravado.
- And she's not to be messed with.
- No, she's tough.
I appreciate that. Can I see the back?
Sure.
It's just great. This feels like it has
a real contemporary value.
I mean, you could put her on a runway,
and it would be something
that people would want to wear.
- Thank you so much.
- When you get something like Western,
maybe that feels like the short end.
- It feels like the small straw.
- I didn't get to choose it.
And you're thinking,
Oh, no. What am I gonna do?
How am I gonna make this work?
I love the layers, I love the fabric choices,
and I love the styling.
I think they both nailed it.
The minute you walked out, Matar...
You can manage my farm anytime.
What is nice about it really
is you created something new.
I think that is what is
important about a designer
is that you do something
that you have not seen before.
- Very good job.
- Thank you.
Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
We're gonna have a little chat,
and then we're gonna call you back.
You can leave the runway.
Let's talk first about the ones
- that we didn't like so much.
- Yeah.
Gordana.
[Glassner]
Flapper, flapper.
I thought it was thoughtful.
I just didn't think it was special enough.
If you think about period piece,
I mean, you could've made
some amazing other choices
than a flapper.
I think the things that stood out today
were the people who were dreamers
when they really looked at
who their character was going to be.
That's what was lacking
in the flapper dress.
- No surprises.
- Yeah.
Let's talk about Louise.
I was really disappointed
with Louise's dress.
I just felt like it didn't say anything,
and I thought that
she missed the challenge.
Yeah, I think you're right.
It wasn't memorable.
- It really missed it for me.
- [Varvatos] It wasn't really...
"I'm standing out here on the runway,
and I'm gonna show you my best."
And I think every time
everybody stands up here,
it should be putting
their best foot forward.
Exactly.
Okay, let's talk about Ra'mon.
It was a shambles, really.
I mean, I hate to say it.
[Heidi]
It looked like stapled, glued together.
Sounds like he had scrapped an initial idea
and done this in a haste.
I'm sympathetic to him,
because I felt like
I saw some creativity there
and some ideas.
He had a really good story.
Ra'mon definitely had
more of a vision than Louise.
- And it was a risky idea.
- Yeah.
But I really do think
it was like a little Swamp Thing.
Risky and ambitious,
but unfortunately, no banana.
[Laughter]
Let's talk about the designers
that we did like.
Let's talk about Nicolas.
He loves white and lace,
and it has not really worked
in other challenges,
but today it worked.
The fabric looked cheap
with the naked eye,
but I think that that fabric
would photograph
much more expensive than it looks.
There's a lot of things,
when you actually see costumes...
they just don't look expensive,
but on the camera, they look great.
The detail on that garment
was spectacular.
Yeah. He really got to do
what he loves today,
and show us something
we haven't seen.
If you would watch that movie,
you would go home
and be, like,
"Wow, that was such a beautiful dress
that the evil queen was wearing."
Let's talk about Epperson.
He's very interesting and very creative.
[Varvatos] His story was great.
And she was great with it, too.
- Yeah, she was.
- She's amazing.
The whole combination
was pretty terrific.
And the belt and the holster
and all those little details.
I thought it was really cool.
He didn't actually pick the genre Western.
He's, like, "Okay, this is
what I have to do now.
Even though I might not like it,
I'm really gonna give it some."
- And he really did.
- Yeah.
- He rose to the occasion, that's for sure.
- He did a great job.
Okay, let's talk about Christopher.
It looked as beautiful in back
as it did in front.
- [Varvatos] Perfection.
- And for a costume,
it needs to look great
from every angle, and it really did.
- He made this costume for $150.
- That's amazing.
That's impressive.
I was pretty blown away with his eye...
to pull those pieces together.
Christopher made something
really spectacular.
Okay, so we've made our decision?
Yeah? Let's bring them back out.
One of you will be named the winner,
and one of you will be out.
One of you will be named the winner,
and one of you will be out.
Gordana,
you're in.
- You can leave the runway.
- Thank you very much.
Epperson,
you're in.
You can leave the runway.
Nicolas,
you are the winner of this challenge.
Thank you.
Your ice queen blew us away.
You really used your time to produce
something memorable and exquisite.
Your fantasy outfit
also matched your story,
and both were equally impressive.
- Thank you.
- You also have immunity
for the next challenge
and cannot be eliminated.
You can leave the runway.
Thank you.
Oh, my God.
It is absolutely amazing.
The judges loved it.
Somebody even called me an artist,
if I say so myself.
Hey, guys.
[Cheering]
I'm only seeing, right now,
Bryant Park and the $100,000.
I'm here to win this competition,
and nothing's gonna stop me.
Christopher,
good job.
You're in. You can leave the runway.
Ra'mon...
[no audible dialogue]
Louise...
one of you will be out.
Ra'mon.
Yes?
This dress missed the mark.
This garment was a home-sewn mess.
Your character may have
been out of this world,
but what planet was she from?
There were some glimmers
of creativity in your story,
but your execution was unacceptable.
Louise, a lot of times,
we say "too costumey" as a criticism,
but in your case,
you could've used more drama.
This dress didn't give us any sense
of who your film character was.
It was unfortunately a snooze-fest.
Ra'mon.
Yes?
You're out.
That means, Louise, you're in.
You can leave the runway.
Congratulations.
[Crying]
- Auf Wiedersehen, Ra'mon.
- Thank you.
Thank you so much.
This has been an absolute honor.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
I was given an opportunity
that a lot of people would k*ll for,
and I'm really grateful for that.
Ra'mon, you're a fabulous designer
and a fabulous person.
I hate telling you that you
have to go to the workroom
to clean up your space, but you do.
I came here to be a strong designer
with a point of view
and also to be a competitor, and so,
I can leave with a smile on my face...
and a genuine one at that.
Next week on Project Runway...
All I can tell you is that your next
challenge will be quite colorful.
For this challenge,
you will be working in teams of two.
- Wah-wah.
- You don't want to overdo it.
[Irina]
Team challenges are a pain in the neck.
I'd rather just do it myself.
You don't think it's too, like, plain?
[Gordana]
She doesn't give me any direction.
- She just says, "I don't like it."
- Fix it.
Oh, my God. So much stress.
One or more of you will be out.
[Kors]
No modern girl wants to wear that dress.
I don't know what is worse...
the pumpkin disco ball
or the shower curtain nightie.
Did you really think they went together?
They don't.
about the fashion you've seen
on tonight's show.
