Previously on Project Runway...

All of these women
are recently divorced

and want to turn
these wedding dresses

into hip, cool outfits.

I got a lot of work to do.

You cannot lose who you are
as a designer.

The core of this look has to be
from the wedding dress.

I misunderstood the assignment,
so I'm changing it.

Gordana, congratulations.

- You are the winner of this challenge.
- Thank you so much.

When this came out, I'm like,
"She's going to the Oktoberfest."

That means, Epperson, you're out.

This is Project Runway.

Of course I'm the best.

The search for the next
big fashion designer.

- I have to win.
- I'm in. You're out.

- I'm the best designer here.
- I have no fear.

- Make it work.
- That's my line.

This is my dream.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway
is the chance of a lifetime.

The winner of Project Runway
will receive

a fashion spread
in marie claire magazine,

a Paris vacation courtesy of Evian,

and $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris

to start their own line.

I'm here for one reason.
I'm here to make it to Fashion Week.

I started out so strong, and now
I've been in the bottom a couple times.

I mean, she just looks like tinfoil.

It's like a metallic Hefty bag,

- just cinched.

Now I have to stand up and say,

"This is it. This is what I can do,"

and go big, go huge,

but not too huge
to scare the judges.

I definitely deserve to be here.

Especially in the last challenge.

My strengths really kicked in,

and I proved myself a little bit.

I love this dress on her.

I can see you walking off the runway
and just going out in that tonight.

means that I'm in
the middle of the pack.

I've still never been in the bottom.

You could say that
slow and steady wins the race.

Mr. Mackie is frequently referred to
as the "sultan of sequins."

And if you look behind us,
you'll see why.

His incredible creations
have been worn

by every Hollywood icon,

from Diana Ross to Cher,

to Tina Turner, to Madonna.

Designers, for this challenge,
you will be creating

an extravagant stage look.

And Mr. Mackie's
gonna tell you more about it.

- Hello, designers.

Listen, I have to tell you,
this is not fashion.

This is a whole other place.
This is the stage.

When you're designing for the stage,
you have to take it many steps above.

It's not the red carpet.
It's not a party.

You want that audience to get excited
before they even open their mouth.

Take your designs to another level.

Take it to another period,
another goddess

from some mythological kingdom.

Just go for it, okay?

I almost fainted,

because it has been my dream
to meet the man himself.

I'm standing in front of Bob Mackie.

So you're going to be designing
a stage look

in the manner of Bob Mackie

with a very particular performer in mind.

- [Gasps]
- Wow.

She is a five-time Grammy-winning,

multi-platinum album-selling artist,

and she's an individual who
sets trends and her own rules

when it comes to her fashion,
both on and off the stage.

Designers, you're creating
a look for...

Christina Aguilera.

[Screams]

I knew it!

[Nicolas]
Christina Aguilera.

This is, by far, the best
Project Runway moment ever.

I get very excited about when
I'm designing for a huge venue,

and you have to think,

"Are you going to see
that person from a mile away?"

But you have to also think
about those video screens on each side

that come in really close.

So it's kind of like
you're working for the stage

and for the movies, really.

So your responsibility here
is to create

an awesome, staggering look

and to wow Mr. Mackie
and Christina Aguilera.

So you will have 30 minutes
here to sketch,

then we're going shopping at Mood,
where you'll have a budget of $300.

And, designers,
you have two days

- for this challenge.

This is not just an average woman.

This is Christina Aguilera.

She's an icon, and to create
an iconic look for an icon

is frightening and exciting and exhilarating.

I don't really have, like,
a complete, solid design,

but overall, I'm more of a person

that is inspired
by the fabric when I find it.

My work that I do
for theater and for film

is very grand and feathers

and lace and crystals

and just ombré.

I think that this challenge has
a lot more pressure than previous ones,

because I don't usually make things
that are just for show or avant-garde.

I think I need to show the judges
that I can push it farther.

Designers, time's up.

We need to put our pencils down
and head off to Mood.

Designers, you have your $300 budget.

You have 30 minutes to shop.

Your time starts right now.

Go, go, go.

- How much are the feathers?
- He'll be like, "Ahh, get everything!"

[Shirin]
People are running rampant.

They're grabbing anything
that has any sort of shine,

sheen, sequins, beads.

[Gordana]
Feathers, leather, fur.

I have no idea what I'm making.
[Laughing]

My strategy is to buy

as many different things as I possibly can
and figure it out later.

Not enough time.
Must buy everything.

[Grunts]
I can't hold all mine.

Two yards of this,
two yards of this.

[Nicolas] A lot of the designers
are grabbing already, like,

sequined fabric
that's already pre-made,

and they're gonna be making
outfits out of that.

Bob Mackie takes
multiple different fabrics

and puts them all together
to create his own patterns,

and that's how I always work.

Designers, you have
five minutes remaining.

- My total is 55?
- Yeah.

Okay, more feathers.

This challenge, I'm going to blast
the industry with my knowledge.

You give me some sequins,
some lace and some feathers,

and I will create you
a couture garment.

You can definitely tell

the people who know
what they're doing,

and they got the right fabric,
and they're feeling good.

I feel like I just had Christmas.
I'm like, "Yeah!"

And then you see that the sort of

stressed-out,
deer-in-the-headlights look.

Oh, this red is so awful.

They're staring at their fabric,

and you know they just have no idea
what to do with this stuff.

This color looks like a bad prom dress.

[Carol Hannah]
It's really red.

- It's like Count Dracula red.
- I know.

Well, I'm covering it up
with something else,

- so, hopefully...
- Yeah.

[Christopher]
What?

We have four challenges left,
including this one.

Four.

- That's it?
- That's it.

Just so you know. There's no pressure.

My concept is based on

this '80s punk prom kind of look.

And there's gonna be a beaded corset

and a fun little short skirt
underneath it.

I don't know if I have enough sequins.
[Snickers]

I really don't know
what Carol Hannah bought.

She bought this, like,
cheap, crappy-Iooking

Halloween costume fabric.

[Logan]
Where are you going with all that?

I don't know.
I haven't decided.

The pressure of this challenge,

along with the fact that

this is pretty much a stretch for me

is causing me to hesitate a little.

I really don't know what to do here.

I don't normally do things
this over-the-top.

I never do things this over-the-top.

You think this is too simple?

Too simple?
Crazy sequins with a print,

stuff on the side,
chains lined in pink.

- That's not too simple.
- Okay.

I don't follow Christina Aguilera,

I think, as close as a lot
of the other designers.

So I hope that she likes zebra print,

and I hope she's not bothered
that I'm using some furs.

This what'll keep you warm in a blizzard.

- What do you guys think of my jacket?
- [Grunting]

[Nicolas] In about a day, we're gonna be sitting
in front of Bob Mackie and Christina Aguilera.

I don't think Project Runway
has ever had

such two huge stars together.

I think I have taken on
too ambitious project.

- Is the whole gown gathered?
- Yeah.

- That's ambitious.
- I know.

But you know what? We've got two days.
You have immunity.

Having immunity is really nice.

But I have to say
this is not something

that I will be the most proud of.

[Beads clattering]

Oh, is that the tape?

- Take the tape off, and the beads fall off.
- Oh, no.

Gordana is struggling with this challenge.

The beads were coming off in strands.
Like, rows of them.

It's falling apart every time I cut it.

- It's just like... [whooshing sound]

I know you don't wanna rely on that,
but you do have immunity.

But it's like...

I'm just down today.

I'm just too frazzled.

It's not like you're starting from square one.

that ruching stuff, don't you?

I just have to be Speedy Gonzales.

I'm going to start completely over.

I decided that what I was working on,
I just didn't like it.

And instead of fixing it,

I just decided to just to toss it
and start all over again.

I have really high expectations
for this challenge.

I really wanna just come back
and sort of blow everyone away.

I mean, I'm out to win it, for sure.

[Nicolas]
My dress definitely moves.

I still am trying to figure out

what to do with her upper part,

because I know Christina
likes to show off the girls.

She's gonna put on some skates,

and she's gonna skate down the...
[laughs]

Skate across the stage.

The whole look is completely
wearing me out right now,

because it's so much feather work
and just the intricate placing of the lace.

I decided to focus on Hollywood.
You know, 1940s glamour look.

I have this big old dress,

and I'm putting these inserts
and covering that with chiffon,

and it's just a lot.
[Laughs]

[Carol Hannah]
I don't really know what Shirin is making.

I'm not really sure if Shirin
knows what Shirin is making.

But it's everywhere.
It's all over the floor.

It's in the hall.
It's in the sewing room. It's everywhere.

How is everyone?

[Christopher]
Hey, Tim.

So, Christopher, talk to me.

This comes off all in one piece.

- Just tears away?
- Yep. Exactly. Uh-huh.

Underneath is a different look.

- Here's my general disappointment.
- Yes. Yes.

There is a primness
to this whole look.

If you're gonna have a reveal,
it should be

super-sexy sl*t or something.

This is 1999 in the costume department

as an ice skating Halloween outfit.

Mm-hmm.

There's a lot of pressure

when you're designing
for Christina Aguilera.

I need this.

Most of the other designers
have dressed celebrities,

and I've never came
anywhere close to a celebrity.

- [Tim] Althea.

First look is, like, huge jacket.

And then, when the model
gets to the end of the stage,

the jacket comes off,
and it's, like, a wow look

with this, you know,
gorgeous sequined dress.

You and Christopher...
you're both thinking about this...

She comes out in a pumpkin
and pops out.

- Thank you, Althea.
- Thank you.

- Hi, Gordana.
- Hey, Tim.

- So talk to me about this.
- Oh, my gosh.

I'm worried about it.

- It looks very matronly.
- I know.

It's just, like, I'm so mentally
not here right now.

- Gordana, you have a lot to work out.

I cannot be eliminated
for this challenge. I'm safe.

But I still want to have something nice
to send down the runway.

I thought you moved your winning look
over here for inspiration.

I thought that's
what you were working on.

- This is a new look?
- Yeah, this is a new look.

Talk about déjä vu.

- I feel like we've seen this look before.

It is kind of an "uh-oh."

And the last thing you want
is the judges to label you

as a one-note, and say,
"We've already seen this dress."

but I haven't been able to figure out
a way to take this

and turn it into something short

without it looking
like the Ice Capades.

I think you can have
a major wow factor here.

- I can see this being very Christina.

Tim is like a tornado.

It's kind of calm and mellow,
and everybody's about their daily lives.

And all of a sudden,
things are getting ripped up

and sequins are flying everywhere,

and everyone's trying
to really put together

their look again after the damage.

Well, that's a big change

You know, you need
to stand behind your designs.

and there's reveals,

and you'd expect an elephant

My biggest concern is working
the feathers into the dress,

because without them,

it's really just a boring,

I just feel like if you're mediocre,
at least have a great personality.

Irina's actually a really good designer.

The only problem with her

I just really wish that

she was a little bit nicer to people

and not treat everybody
like they work for her.

What if I snap it off,
and a snap goes flying across the room

and hits Christina in the head?

Then we can auction that snap off
for a lot of money.

My point of view is a little odd
and a little different,

with a bustier and sparkle panties.

You can't ask for anything more.

Almost like a Barbie hair look
but sleek back super tight.

than Christina, I guess.

- The dress is super glamorous.

the legendary Bob Mackie

and had to create a stage look

worthy of a superstar.

So we hope to see
a very exciting runway today.

First, we have fashion, costume,
and home designer, Bob Mackie,

who counts Cher and Tina Turner
among his celebrity clientele.

Next, we have fashion director for
marie claire magazine, Nina Garcia.

And I have a little surprise for you.

Designers, I would like to introduce

international pop star and fashion icon,

I'm really excited to be here,

and I'm very, very curious,
so I can't wait.

Let's start the show.

I can definitely see Christina
onstage in my dress.

It's one of those garments

that you'll be able to see
from a million rows back.

It's definitely a showstopper.

I'm really excited watching
Kojii come down the runway.

It's definitely on the brink
of being costumey,

but I think it's really fun,

and I hope that Christina
understands that.

As I see my design
come down the runway,

I think that it definitely
has movement to it.

It didn't turn out exactly
like I would've wanted,

but what are you gonna do?

When I see Katie,
I'm just giggling,

because it's a showpiece.

It's the only one with a true reveal

where there's really
a second outfit.

I can see Christina


I really won't know until Heidi
calls us out on stage.

But I'm hoping to be number one.

It's actually not as bad
as I thought it would be.

Judges really only see
the finished look,

and I just don't want them

to think that I'm slacking.

It's always nerve-racking,

no matter how good
you think your look is.

You're always like,
"But what if,

like, they just don't get it?"

It's really a matter
of what Christina's looking for.

I wasn't really sure

what direction
I was gonna take this,

but I did wanna make an impact.

I think it did that,

so I'm pleased.

Irina, please step forward.

Your scores have qualified you

to move on
to the next challenge.

You should be grateful this week
that you have immunity,

because otherwise,
there would've been a good chance

that you'd be eliminated today.

I had a complete meltdown.

The beads started falling apart.

It was, like, disaster.

That's the way it looked, too.

tell us about your look.

I'll be honest with you.
This challenge was kind of a stretch for me,

'cause I'm not used to working
with sequins and feathers.

So I decided to really focus
on one high-glamour piece.

For someone that's not used
to working with glitz and glam,

I think you did a really great job.

The materials really come off
well on stage.

I could totally see myself in it.

Thank you.

It looks very glamorous.

It has the promise

to turn into something
a little more revealing,

had you been able
to engineer a way

to get rid of that bottom half.

Originally, the plan was
for it to come off here.

It looked like an ice-skating uniform
to me, so I just...

One thing you don't want to look like
is an ice-skater.

I love the textures of blacks...

the shiny black,
the feather black, the matte black.

It's very sophisticated.

- It is a wow dress.
- You'd look good in that dress.

It does not look cheap.

Shirin, are you confident with this look?

Not terribly. You know,
I'm very much about construction.

I mean, you've seen my other work.

I wanted it to be really extravagant
and really dramatic,

and so I kind of took on a lot.

For me, I see, like, an upscale
witch Halloween dress.

There needs to be
that pointy black hat and a broom,

and it would be
a perfect Halloween outfit.

When I was watching her
walk down the runway,

I was like, "I would totally trip
in something like that."

Can you open that skirt
so I can just see what those things are?

- Are they all different?
- No, they're just sheer.

- They're just sheer?
- Yeah.

I did like the top half,

but there's a disconnect
between that top half

that had a glimmer of promise

with the rest of this Carmen Miranda
moment in the bottom.

Althea, tell us about your look.

I wanted to, you know,
step up the glamour

but give it a little bit of a edge as well

and really create a huge silhouette

that was just no mistaking
that this is the star here.

What is the gray strips?
What is that made of?

- Actually, it's the other side.
- Is it the back side of the fabric?

- Yeah, it's the back side of the fabric.
- Very clever. Works beautifully.

I think the back looks
really great on her bum.

It does look spectacular,
and I think

that someone in row 2200
would see her from far away.

- Couldn't miss her.
- You can't miss her.

I agree that it's
a very nicely made dress.

I don't know if you thought
about the fact

that she will have to move

and that a train might be cumbersome.

But then again, depends on

if it is like... I don't know...
draped on a piano.

I don't know all the moves you do,
but maybe, like, the bull riders.

I don't know about the bull riding moves.
You lost me on that one.

I think there's a reason
I'm not a choreographer.

- It's a beautiful dress.

Christopher, tell us about your look.

Well, as you can see,
I took a little different perspective

on this piece than some
of the other designers.

I channeled this moment
of you covering a Cyndi Lauper song,

When I first found out

I definitely wanted to do
something short,

and I definitely wanted to put
this sort of deco feel to it,

'cause I really love
the silver and the platinums.

I think it's quite beautiful.

I could. The first thing
I thought of when I saw it was,

"This is a fun outfit."

I could totally move in it.
I can really shake.

It would really, like, move on stage.

Really pretty.

I love the way
you attached the feathers.

I love the way it works.

It'd be a great work dress for a singer.

It needs to get around the stage
fast and dance and move.

Logan, tell us about your design.

I wanted to create a look

that Christina hasn't really done
and isn't doing right now.

So this is kind of like
this punk rock princess.

She's got the chains on the back,

- and it's just more of an edgy look.
- Let's just talk about the chains

Do you think three chains
are gonna cut it

- to make a statement?

It's giving me cavewoman a little bit,

with the sleeves cut off.

But it was nice to see a little bit of color
thrown in the mix of everything.

There is more color on the inside.

It's fully lined with a pink...

- Really? Where?
- Yeah, it's, like, a pink...

It's kind of tucked under
right now.

When are you gonna see that?
And how are you gonna see that?

You know what would've been nice is
if it'd stopped at a high bikini kind of line.

The inside would flap open,
so when you did see it,

- it's like, "Oh, my God. What was that?"
- Right.

I think you took a chance
as opposed to the rest.

I think you have done
something very safe.

I wish you would've really
gone and ran with it.

It was really fun.
And I'm a hip-mover,

so he gave me a lot of movement
below the waist, which was nice.

It was short. It was sexy.

He thought about the fact
that it was for stage

and it was suiting her body type.

It was all put together
very interestingly.

To be honest with you,
I'm not a big believer in black for stage,

but the detail looked really glamorous.

The textures of black were beautiful.

She, technically,

- is a really good designer.

It was definitely impressive.

I loved how she really constructed
the different shapes.

It was beautifully thought out

in how those pieces hugged the body.

She knows how to slim it,
to make it more hourglass.

I mean, all these things are all tricks.

It looked very beautiful.

that we didn't like.

Shirin.

That was very unfortunate,

because I do think Shirin is talented.

She does have a very meticulous hand.

I don't know what went wrong here.

And so dowdy, too.

It just didn't look like
that much thought went into it.

Let's move on to Christopher.

That was tasteless.

Mmm.

It looked like the road company
of the Pussycat Dolls.

- It was awful. It was awful.
- It was horrifying.

And the fact that
he would show something

that Christina had already done,
and show it so badly.

- I mean, we all remember you doing that.
