07x04 - Design Your Heart Out

Post by bunniefuu »

Previously on Project Runway...

You will be working in teams of two
to create a high-end signature look.

I will choose Jesse.

- Ah.
- I'll do the pants.

It's very difficult to work with Jesse.

I want to see my [beep] dress.

I'm just trying to rein in the crazy.

Wow. That's the fabric?

If you're not doing it right,
get the hell out of my way.

I think it's beautifully done.

Mila, congratulations.

You're the winner of this challenge.

[Mila]
Whew.

Ping, that means you're out.

Anthony, you choose
which model will be in.

- Sarah, today is your day.
- Thank you.

That means you're out.

This is Project Runway.

Yes!

I am fashion. Look at me.

The search for the next
big fashion designer.

It's cut or be cut.

Just make it work.

Great clothes.

Great style.

I've got it all.

Three finalists will make it
to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

Well, I won't do anything to win.

I will.

But only one can be the winner.

My weapon of choice.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway is the chance of a lifetime.

The winner of Project Runway

will receive a fashion spread
in marie claire magazine,

an opportunity to sell
their line on bluefly. Com,

a $50,000 technology suite

to create, design, and run their business

from HP and Intel,

and $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris

to launch their line.

Look at that empty bed.

I wasn't too surprised
that Ping was sent home,

because she had been
in the bottom three before,

and at this point I'm sort of
bonding with Janeane.

She's my last roommate left.

It's hard to bond
with people, really, though,

because we're all competing
against each other.

[Groans]

So as I move into the fourth challenge,

I am really, really excited to
still be in this competition.

I do really want
my dream to come true.

I want to make it to Bryant Park.

And I think I'm already showing
the judges that I'm capable

of designing amazing stuff.

So are you nervous

to make a comeback from
the bottom of the barrel?

It wasn't my fault we're in the bottom.

I feel like I really just need to

get everything from the last
challenge out of my mind

and really just approach this one fresh.

I think I can hopefully
just come out strong

and get myself out of that bottom area.

I feel like I'm a little buddy with Mila

because we're similar in a lot of ways.

She's kind of like the older version of me,
which is kind of funny.

Like, we wear a lot of the same colors

and we kind of have
similar personalities,

but, you know,
of course she's competition

'cause we have similar styles.

D Ta-da d

I don't know why
you're taking so long.

- Ladies.
- Bye, apartment.

- Hello.
- Hi, Heidi.

Mila, you won the last challenge,

and that is going to give you immunity

- and you cannot be eliminated.
- Yay!

For your next challenge,
you will be designing a look

for a fashion week gala.

Whoo!

And Tim is waiting for you to
fill you in on all the details.

He will also introduce you

to a group of very inspiring women.

Good luck, and I'll see you
on the runway.

Heidi, she's very vague, but she says,

"You will be working with
very inspirational women."

And that just...
That leaves it open for anything.

- Good morning, designers.
- Good morning, Tim.

I am delighted to
introduce you to Lisa Walker,

vice president of innovation
for Campbell's Soup Company.

Campbell's is proud to team up
with the American Heart Association's

"Go Red for Women" movement
to create signature Campbell red dresses

for our Campbell's
"Address Your Heart" program.

These dresses have been
worn by top celebrities

at the Red Dress Awards
during fashion week,

and this gala is
designed to honor women

who have been personally impacted
by this disease.

So designers, with that in mind,
your challenge is to create

this year's signature dress

for the Campbell's
"Address Your Heart" program.

And in keeping with tradition,

red must be a prominent
color in your dress,

and the Campbell branding
must be present, all right?

Lisa has very kindly provided us
with Campbell-branded fabric

that you can use
in your dress if you choose,

or you can create your own brand elements
using supplemental fabric

or a combination of both, and...

there is one more very exciting dimension
to this challenge.

You will be designing
for a very inspiring group of women.

Let's meet them.

I want you to know that
each of these amazing women

has in some form
or another been impacted by heart disease,

and the winning design will be worn

by one of these amazing ladies

to the Red Dress Awards
during New York Fashion Week,

and the winning designer
will accompany their muse to the event.

I'm just so excited.
It's already feeling very emotional.

And if there was one challenge
that I could win

besides making it
to the final three, this would be it.

If we get to go to the gala event
during fashion week,

it would mean the world to me.

And the winning design
will be put into limited production

and sold on projectrunway. Com

to benefit the American
Heart Association.

Our models for this challenge
have been randomly assigned to us.

I'm a little nervous,
but I'm actually excited

to be able to work with a real woman.

Designers, I'm going to send you
into the workroom with your new models.

You will have 30 minutes
to have a discussion

and to sketch your design idea.

Then we are going
shopping at Mood, okay?

Take it away!

Are models are all women
impacted by heart disease.

These women have overcome
so much and suffered so much

that this challenge instantly becomes very
personally important to all the designers.

- So what's your story?
- My heart stops.

Apparently, it stops whenever
I get dehydrated,

I get too hot, I stand for too long.

Okay.

I have two kids.
I'm married for 34 years.

Julie, she's an amazing woman.

We started talking about
how she had died for two minutes.

I've never met anyone
in my whole entire life

who died and came back to life.

To hear a story like that
is just so inspiring.

Oh, my God!

So you're gonna make me pretty
'cause I survived, right?

I would like to design
something classy and sassy.

My biggest challenge is coming up with
something that's gonna flatter her body

and still read "theme dress,

gala, not something
you can buy off the rack."

I can do a really good detail

where this fabric is pleated.

That way you have
the Campbell brand.

I'm really excited
'cause she's really, really tiny,

and I'm gonna make her a fitted dress,
which is what she wants.

Love it. Love it.

We could do something
with, like, a Z-neck line.

You want a long dress?
Okay. More like a chiffon,

- like a silky, flowing dress?
- Yes.

Okay.

- I'm just gonna do a cutout of a star.
- Okay.

I decide, with my model, actually,

that we're going to use the star icon

because it is present
on the Campbell's Soup can.

I kind of like the idea of maybe it
being right at your knee.

- I'm open. I'm open.
- Okay. Okay.

I know that I have immunity, but it doesn't
make me want to work any less.

And, wow, if I can win another one,

two in a row, why not?

I want it to be youthful,

and I want it to be elegant
at the same time, so...

Kaitlin really likes the idea of doing

a cut-out back and doing
something sexy and fresh,

so it's gonna have the structure
that I'm usually doing,

but it'll have a little bit more
of an elegance to it.

- [Laughing]
- That's it.

You are hilarious!

She's been dealing with hypertension
for so long, and just to know

that I can make her
feel special in this moment,

that meant a lot to me
because I had to move

my mother with me to Georgia

because she just got out
of heart surgery.

I mean, people don't know
what you go through.

No, they don't.

Like, when my mom
came out of heart surgery,

I was like, "Oh, my God."

I know what it's like to have someone

who's gone through
complications with their heart,

and it is no thing to take for granted.

Well, like I said,
you use me as the model,

but you use your mom as the inspiration.

You're right. Okay, Tisha,
I don't like tears, so clean 'em up.

We cannot be in here crying.

"What did you do to that girl?"

Designers, it's time to say

farewell to your models,
only temporarily.

It's gonna be wonderful.
I'll make you look beautiful.

I know you will.

Thank you so much.
We'll see you later.

All right, designers. Grab whatever
you need. We're going to Mood.

All right, designers,
I have your $100 budget.

Around Mood,
you will find bins filled with red fabric

that is within the brand color story.

But you're not limited to these fabrics.

[Emilio]
Jen and I are on the same page.

She loves her legs and her shoulders.

So we're doing a really cute,
flirty c*ck dress

in a beautiful fiery red.

- Does this look cheap?
- This looks awfully Valentine's Day.

I decided to go with a jacket.
It needs to be a nice fabric.

I can't go with something cheap.

- I don't have enough money for that.
- Jersey print. Go.

I have to get my boning!

[Screams]

All right, designers,
that's time. Time is up.

Everyone needs to be in line.

- That's $96.43. There you go.
- Awesome.

- Thank you, Mood!
- Thank you!

- Hi, everybody.
- Hi, Tim.

You have until midnight tonight,

a little bit of time tomorrow,
but very little.

So this is a one-day challenge.

These women are not 34-25-35.

So to make a gala-worthy gown
in 10 hours is daunting.

Thank you, everyone. Make it work.
I know you will.

[Anna Marie]
I'm self-taught as a fashion designer,

but I just spent four years
studying print-making,

and I'm tracing the Campbell's logo
onto red chiffon.

It's something that'll be different.
It'll set me aside from everyone else.

[Maya]
My model and I are really attracted

to the shape of the heart,

and we wanted to use that,
but not in a very literal sense

so the dress wouldn't look
too Valentine's Day

but in more of
an abstract form on the dress

to represent the cause.

[Amy]
I am more stressed than usual.

She's gonna be walking
down a runway for the first time,

and the last thing I want is for her

to feel unattractive,
so it's a lot of pressure.

[Seth Aaron]
The models are size 4,

size 6, stuff we do every day.

We don't even have to make a pattern.
We can cut that blindfolded.

This is honestly the largest challenge

that I've ever faced as a designer.

Coming up on Project Runway...

Oh, sh**t!

There's a bucket of water right here,
and I just dipped my dress in it.

Everyone is gonna have to
really pull something out of a bag

because we are all pressed for time.

Three facets of this challenge is that A,
we're designing for real women;

B, red has to be
our predominant color in our design;

and C, we have to
somehow incorporate

Campbell's branding into our design.

Three very difficult things to do.

So not like totally disgusting, right?

That's beautiful. I like the lines.

Oh, sh**t!

The fabric is alive.

It literally moves
and has a mind of its own.

Every time I cut it or sew it,
it's a different shape.

I don't even know what
the front or back is at this point.

Guess there will be a seam there.

These are gonna be double,

and then under-stitch
underneath the other side.

[Jay]
When I met Julie, I said to myself,

"I need to make her look taller,"

so the design I had in mind,

there's a lot of
vertical lines going on,

so I'm hoping that
it's gonna work for her.

- Good to see you.
- How's it going?

- Good. How are you?
- Good.

Can you hold that right there for me?

[Amy]
Nadine comes in,

and I'm still working on the chiffon,

but it's not even attached together to
put on the dress yet.

I hope that she's not too nervous,
or at least not as nervous as I am.

- It's looking good.
- Thank you.

[Anna]
I'm excited, 'cause I think I'm satisfying

one of my primary goals, which is

to create an empowering
experience for Stephanie.

Ooh, impressive.

There you go.
Slide your other arm over there.

So Jen comes back
for our fitting, and I'm glad

I didn't cut yet because there were
parts that I needed to adjust

and pieces I need to extend and tuck.

[Anthony] Many people are
just not accustomed to using

anything besides model-sized women,

and these women represent
all different shapes and sizes.

You're gonna rock this dress.

- You're gonna work it.
- We rock the runway.

He is so talented.

The dress is exactly what we said
we were gonna do this morning.

- Amazing.
- Your mommy will be proud.

Yeah?

Me, my twin brother,
and my other brother grew up

with having a single mother,
so it was really, really rough,

but my past has made me
so passionate about what I want to do,

which is fashion, because it's taken me
so far already,

and there's so many
more years to come.

I'm happy here.
All of this is making me happy.

It's just the front. This is why we're here.
Let's talk about it.

Yeah, I mean,
other than that, it's gorgeous.

Sweet, sweet Rose. I loved Rose.

She started going into,
"Well, I was thinking..."

and she started talking about Grecian

draping and pin-tuck,
and I've done a few of those,

but it's really not known as my style.

Oh, I love it so much.

- Okay.
- I really, really do.

Bottom line is I wanted to make Rose happy.
She's been through a lot of [beep]

The doctor just said, "Hey, how long
have you had a heart murmur?"

And I just looked at the doctor and said,

"Excuse me?"

[Janeane]
Designing for somebody specifically

that I can meet
and speak with is actually

quite helpful because I can get
inspired by Beth's personality.

I really want to bring that out
in what she's wearing.

I need to put Beth in this dress.

It's amazing.
Would you really look at me

and think I had open-heart surgery,
seriously?

- No, no.
- Or a lot of the women here today?

It is so cute on you.

It's amazing, a lot of these women
that are still

happy and smiling
and can motivate us.

It definitely put a spin
on the competition for me.

'Cause prior to this challenge,

it was all about me, me, me, me.

But after meeting the ladies,

you realize that there are
greater things in this world

than just winning a challenge.

Thank you, sweetie.

There's a bucket of water right here,

and I just dipped my dress in it.

Of course, my dress takes a dunk
in a bucket of water.

Of course. Of course.
'Cause I'm Janeane. This happens to me.

But I have to make this work,

so, moving on, you know?

- Hello, Tim.
- How is everyone?

- Wonderful.
- Are you doing well?

- Yes, sir.
- All right. I want to check in with you...

- Okay. Okay.
...and see for myself.

- How's it going?
- Good. How's it going for you?

I want to keep it real simple.
She's got a real full figure,

and I want to just try to
slim her and heighten her.

And then I'm gonna do a jacket,

and it's basically this shape,

and it'll come down lower

and the sweetheart neckline
will pop out from it.

Without this jacket,
I don't think you have very much

in terms of fashion.

- Stop telling me that.
- But it's true.

- Anna.
- Hi, Tim. How are you?

- I'm good. How are you?
- I'm challenged to break up

sort of her body shape visually
so that it complements her figure.

And then I started going
in this direction...

- What is that?
- I just traced with a pen...

- Oh!
...the detailing.

So I wanted to do something that was
a little more subtle.

Nice, actually.

- So, Mila, how are you doing?
- Hey there, Tim.

I'm using red and ivory taffeta.

I like this with the stars.

The star wraps around the back,

and I actually think
it's gonna be flattering.

- And you had a fitting. How did it go?
- She's a really tough fit.

Frankly, I'm glad that we have an opportunity
to work with real women

for just this reason...
because it's a good lesson.

And there's a strategy, too,
with proportion...

- You're doing it.
...and the shape.

- Jesus, so talk to me.
- Okay, I have Tricia.

She said she wanted
something really fitted

- and she wanted to show her cleavage.
- You've done both.

And then I incorporated
the fabric, which I think I did pretty well

- 'cause it doesn't look cheap.
- Mm-hmm.

She absolutely loves it.
It fits her really good.

- Good, so you got her into it.
- Yeah.

- Hi, Maya.
- Hello.

- Talk to me.
- I wanted to...

embrace sort of the heart shape.

- I see it.
- Yeah. I don't know if I'll have time,

but I really wanted to make a c*ck
purse with the Campbell's print.

- I'd do it.
- Yeah.

So how's Amy?

I'm still trying to get the foundation done.

I'm really concerned
about fit with this challenge

because I want her to feel
really comfortable

and like it's fitting her correctly.

I wanted to leave her left side open.
She has a scar here

that she used to hide
and now she kind of is proud

of going through what she's gone,
so I want to focus...

- It's a badge of courage.
...exposing that. Absolutely.

- Work away here. Thank you, Amy.
- Okay. Thanks.

Seth Aaron, when did you go
Grecian on us?

- Two hours ago.
- What happened?

I have Rose.
She flipped out over it.

I said, "I want to make her happy."

I don't dislike this.

I think it has a beautiful,
graceful elegance.

But if someone
gave me a quiz and asked me

which designer in this room
this belonged to,

you'd probably
be the last one on the list.

I could see that.
[Chuckles]

It shouldn't compromise
who you are as a designer,

because in the end,
who you're really pleasing

- are the judges.
- Right.

I'm not advancing the plot here.
I'm gonna let you get back to work.

All right, designers,
I'm going to leave you for the night,

and I fully expect
when I walk in here tomorrow

that everything will be done.

- Okay, Tim.
- Okay. Thank you all.

[Seth Aaron]
Tim gives me his critique,

and I thought for a second.

I can't lose myself within the client

and not represent myself
on the runway.

So I grab that Grecian gown

and I tear it off the mannequin
and say,

I got two and a half hours
before the end of the day.

I'm gonna give it my all
and make it happen.

I think Anna is gonna have
an issue with her garment,

just the overall construction,

and Jay's dress is really...

I don't know what it is.

It's a train wreck.

I think everyone
is gonna have to really

pull something out of a bag
because we are all pressed for time.

- Nobody's done.
- I'm in bad shape.

I have a lot of work to do still.
Everybody's kind of in the same place.

How do they expect us
to make an evening gown in one day?

People are kind of freaking out.

- Coming up on Project Runway...
- Go, go, go.

[Jonathan] Everyone's running.
Everyone's grabbing irons.

This is definitely a fashion emergency
of Chernobyl proportions.

[Gasps]
No!

[Anthony] These women
have gone through enough.

The last thing you want
to put them through is,

"Ma'am, not only did
you survive heart disease.

Now you have to survive
Nina and Michael Kors and Heidi Klum

telling you how horrible I have
made you look in this garment."

[Ben]
Yeah, exactly.

I did everything
at a quarter instead of a half,

even though I patterned it at a half.

- I have a lot to get done.
- Yeah, you do.

It'll be amazing if I can pull it off.

- After you.
- Thank you.

- D Heigh-h*, Heigh-h* d
- Who are you calling "h*"?

Wow, there's a lot of red in here.

[Amy] I am very crunched
for time this morning.

I have, like, 70°/°
of the dress to get done,

and I'm very, very nervous
about making sure that it fits her

and being something
that's interesting.

[Ben]
I'm a little worried for Seth.

Just a couple hours
before the end of the night,

he started to make another look,

and I'm hoping that
it's gonna work out for him.

After running through
a few different designs,

I decided to take the retro

Campbell's Soup approach,
is what I call it.

This is more of a cooter gown
than a couture gown.

[Amy]
Since we all did red dresses,

it's kind of like comparing
oranges to oranges,

or apples to apples, in this case.

Each one needed to be
a little bit different to stand out.

Every single one of us is
very worried at this point.

There are a couple of designers
that are pretty much done,

but I don't think that
any of the designs, including mine,

really as great as they could be
if we had more time.

sh**t.

Good morning, designers.
We will be sending in your models shortly.

You will each have an hour
to send them to the Garnier Hair Salon

and the L'Oréal Paris makeup room.

If they're bringing in their own shoes,

then use the bluefly. Com
wall for accessories.

Okay, go, go, go.

- Good morning.
- [Seth] How are you today, sweetie?

So good to see you.

If I could fit it on you real quick...

[Anna]
I feel rushed a little bit because

making sure everything lays the way

I think it should, I'm working right up
to the last moment.

- Oh! Very nice. Very nice.
- Yeah?

I think that looks good.
The necklace looks good too.

- Oh, I just need to roll it and hem it.
- Perfect.

That's great. Like, good times!

[Emilio]
What is that? It looks like a cheap flag

at the Thanksgiving Day parade.

It was important for you
to be true to yourself.

I'm just, like, floored that I pulled

this dress out of my a*s
in the last minute,

and it actually was the right cut for her
I should've done earlier yesterday.

I'm really confident about my dress.
My model looks beautiful in it,

and I think it shapes
her body really well.

I feel like Jesus
needs to worry about his dress,

just because
it's so short and so tight

and it doesn't really read "gala party."

I love it. It's exactly what I wanted.

It almost makes having
heart surgery worth it.

Oh!

Okay, let's go get you dolled up.

[Man]
Are we thinking Farrah Fawcett?

Make her look fabulous.

Yes, but more curl.

- And this in the back?
- Yeah, well, maybe not so high.

This is a nice experience for you.

Absolutely.

My husband's birthday
was the first day.

This is definitely a fashion emergency
of Chernobyl proportions

because everyone's running,

everyone's grabbing irons,
everyone's pressing,

the iron's spitting on fabrics.

People are really doing
anything they can

to scramble to finish their dresses
in the last moment.

[Gasps]
No!

I'll be right back.
This'll just take a second.

Designers,

guest models, this is it.

- [Cheering]
- All right, yea!

We're going down to the runway.
Follow me.

Amy, are you the last?

That's it.

Coming up on Project Runway...

This dress was
just like a bag tied in the middle.

I'm just not sure about your taste.

Welcome to the runway.

As you know, in fashion one day you're in,

and the next day you're out.

There are 13 of you here,
and after tonight

there will be 12.

Your challenge was to design a dress

for the Campbell's
"Address Your Heart" program.

Also, for this challenge
you designed for women

whose lives have been
impacted by heart disease.

The winning look will be worn
at the annual Red Dress Awards

during New York Fashion Week

and will be sold
on projectrunway. Com.

All right. Let's meet the judges.

First we have top American
designer Michael Kors.

- Hey, guys.
- Hello.

Fashion director for
marie claire magazine Nina Garcia,

designer and co-founder of Marchesa,

- Georgina Chapman.
- Hello.

Her dresses have been worn

by the likes of Anne Hathaway,

Halle Barry, and Jennifer Lopez.

We will score your designs
as they come down the runway.

One of you will be named the winner,

and one of you will be out.

All right. Let's start the show.

[Jonathan]
I'm so happy with how happy Christina is

when she comes out on the runway,

and I think I really gave her
that classic elegance

with a few tweaks here and there

to keep it modern and keep it fresh.

[Emilio]
The dress expresses my voice, yes,

but it's more my client's voice,

and this is one challenge
where I let her take the lead,

and I think we got what we wanted.

[Maya]
I'm feeling really good about the dress.

It stands out. It's a little different.
It has a lot of texture in it,

and it has a feminine quality

and also sort of an edgy quality
which I love.

[Emilio]
She is incredible on the runway.

Anthony found a way to
make this full-figured woman

look just as classy,
confident and polished

as the women who are
size 4 and size 6.

[Amy] I felt pretty confident
watching her come down the runway.

I think the dress definitely has
my design sensibility in it.

All in all, the design
suits her very well.

[Jesus]
When I'm looking at my dress,

I think it does express me
as a designer.

I think the construction's beautiful,
the fit's beautiful,

and I think that
my detail looks amazing.

And the best thing is that
I satisfy my client.

[Anna]
Steph is really enjoying herself.

Seeing her so happy
overwhelmed my feelings

of disappointment in myself about
how the garment actually turned out.

I think I really struggled
with the super-formal evening gown aspect.

[Jay]
I felt great. Watching Julie,

she just looked
very sweet and happy

and so cute, and she told me

she's happy with the way it looks
and the way it fits.

[Jesse]
Everything looks really good.

The look came together really well.

The fit is really right where I want it.

She loves it, and I'm really liking
what I'm seeing.

[Ben] She looks stunning.
She looks absolutely amazing,

and the dress fits
and she's able to move in it

and it's a really great feeling

because I know that I did
what I needed to do.

[Mila]
She looked so confident,

and she looks great in the dress.

It looked different than any other dress
that was up there,

so I was happy about that.

It just kind of went "pow."

[Janeane] I feel like I made
a pretty dress, you know?

I mean, it's not perfect,

but it has a nice hem
and I like the flowers

and I did my job,
so I'm happy about it.

[Seth Aaron]
Here comes Rose, and, my God,

she worked that dress
like there was no tomorrow.

It definitely expressed
my point of view.

She's happy, I'm happy,
so we're both good.

If I call your name,
please step forward.

Mila,

Maya, Anna,

Amy, Jesse,

Jesus, please step forward.

If I have not called your name,
congratulations.

Your scores have qualified you

to move on
to the next challenge.

You can leave the runway.

The six of you represent the highest

and the lowest scores.

One of you will be named the winner

and one of you will be out.

Let's bring out your models.

Mila, tell us about your look.

Well, when I was looking
at the Campbell's dossier,

I sort of gravitated towards the star icon,

and then I just incorporated

the logo fabric right here as a trim.

When I saw this dress,
it made me smile.

I just thought it was really fun,

yet it has
a sense of "classic" at the same time,

which is really hard to achieve.

[Nina] I love how you
incorporated the branding.

I love how you thought about the star.
I thought that was brilliant.

[Heidi]
I think that this is a dress

that maybe not every woman
can pull off,

but you pulled that dress off
really, really well.

[Michael]
I agree, because you just looked like,

"Hey, I own this dress. I'm rocking it."

Looks great, so I think job well done.

Jesse, tell us about your look.

I was going with something
that worked with her body,

so I wanted to cinch the waist
and fill the bust.

And then also
I was thinking I wanted to

have a jacket that she could pair with it.

I think that it's a sweet dress,

but I don't think that
it stands out enough.

To me it looks a little costumey,

like maybe a little bit of a majorette,

like she should have
a baton or something.

The use of the branding
was not that creative.

[Michael]
Like some sort of strange corsage.

Jennifer, do you have
a problem taking the jacket off

so we can see?

[Georgina] I would question putting
white at that point in the waist.

I think that's never
flattering on anybody.

[Nina]
I think the neckline

is very beautiful,

and I think it frames
her face very nicely.

If it would've been crepe
or something that moved,

that had a little bit less of a shine,

I think you would've been
in a much better situation.

Jesus, tell us about your design.

Okay, well, we, of course, had to
incorporate the labeling,

so I decided to incorporate it on the side

and pleat it to make it
look more elegant.

I also decided to
create these straps right here

to give it kind of like a glamorous look,
and she wanted a short dress.

- Michael, what do you think?
- Where do I start?

You basically took a checklist
of everything that can turn tacky

and combined it into one garment.

Tight red satin, that short,

plus the built-in straps...

I think perhaps there's just too many
elements going on in this dress.

I think if you took maybe
the rhinestones away,

you would end up with
a more successful dress.

I think the eye doesn't know
quite where to go

when you're looking at it.

I definitely think that you have
very good construction skills.

I'm just not sure about...

your taste.

- Less is more. You have to be very...
- Careful.

Careful about not going overboard
with these very cliché items.

Amy, tell us about your look.

For Nadine and I,
it was very important

that she feels very sexy
and confident in her dress.

We wanted to do a strapless top

to show off her scar
and kind of everything she's been through.

I thought it was really beautiful.

I love the fabric that you picked.

I love the movement of the dress.

- It feels very modern, very feminine.
- Thank you.

I think the dress is beautiful.
When you walked out, it moved,

it worked so beautiful,
and you looked so ethereal and confident,

and I could tell that
you were really happy in the dress.

The word "elegant" in today's times

can seem old-fashioned,
but what I loved here...

it was elegant but it was modern.

- Thumbs up. You look fabulous.
- Thank you.

Anna, tell us about your look.

Well, Stephanie and I
wanted to go away

from sort of a red rectangle,
and so we focused on

using color in such a way
that would break up

and create more of a waist for her.

[Nina]
I do like

the bottom half of the dress,

but I don't think
a razor-back silhouette on her,

who is broader in the shoulders,
is gonna help her out.

[Michael]
And I think that the way this is cut...

You wanted to whittle her waist in,

but I actually think
it's making her look very broad on top

and not bringing my eye
up to her face.

It doesn't feel to me
like an evening dress.

Perhaps the color choice
of the flesh is just a touch off.

[Heidi]
Maya, tell us about your look.

We talking about having something
with a lower neckline that shows her scar,

and she was talking
about how she used to cover it up,

and now she wants to be proud of it.

For me, there's something
interesting about this dress.

I feel like there's a design there.

Gives, like, a nice shape to the body.

[Nina]
I kind of see a half of a heart.

The effort that you put into the draping
is what we found interesting.

And I like the clutch.
I thought that was clever.

The dress made me want to look again,

and I think that's always a great thing.

It's very flattering.
I think it looks really good on you.

It's interesting and elegant
at the same time.

So overall, I think a pretty great job.

Thanks.

Okay, we've heard what you've had to say.
We're going to have a chat.

Then I'll call you back.
Thank you very much.

You can leave the runway.

Let's start with Jesse.

I don't understand why he would
make such a short, white jacket.

It still didn't fit.
The shoulder on the jacket was terrible.

However, one thing I did like
was his neckline.

From the waist up,

the dress was very flattering on her.

- Good bosoms.
- Yep. Excellent.

Let's move on to Jesus.

Mm! Mm, mm, mm!

I had full flashback to shiny,

short, tight, tacky...

All of that. We've seen it before.

And then let's add
the crystals on top of it.

It would've been a whole other story
without the straps.

He is really good at sewing.

He knows how to make clothes.

It's really, unfortunately,
it boils down to

taste is something
that you just can't learn.

- Anna.
- This dress was just...

like a bag tied in the middle.

But I understood
where she was coming from

from a design point of view.

It felt contemporary, and it felt young.

I just felt it was inappropriate
for the challenge.

Okay, let's move on
to the designers that we did like.

Let's start with Mila.

I loved the braiding
of the Campbell branding.

I liked the star.

I loved the neckline.
She put it on the perfect spot.

She really captured
the spirit of her model.

And she had fun with it.

I think that Amy also did
a really beautiful dress.

The way she handled
the fabrics was really great.

Yes.

I loved the subtle shine
of the charmeuse

coming through the chiffon

so it wasn't a big charmeuse dress.

And I think also it was
the right silhouette for her client.

She looked chic and modern.

Okay, let's move on to Maya.

I did like it, but I wasn't sure
whether I should like it.

It was a strange thing.
I was looking at it like,

I really shouldn't be
going for this dress,

but there was something there
that kept drawing me back.

And to see something with a little more
interest I think was nice.

There was thought, there was workmanship,
there was surprise.

It is about heart health,

so she brought the heart...
one side of the heart... into it.

Right. She didn't
integrate the Campbell's.

- But I liked the bag. The bag was cute.
- Yeah.

Okay, so we've made our decision?

Good. Let's bring them back out.

The six of you
represent the best and the worst.

One of you will be named the winner,

and one of you will be out.

[Heidi]
One of you will be named the winner,

and one of you will be out.

Maya, you're in.
You can leave the runway.

Thank you.

Amy,

you are the winner of this challenge.

Your dress was elegant,
moved beautifully,

and made your client look
happy and gorgeous.

Nadine will be very memorable
at the red dress gala,

and your dress will be sold
on projectrunway. Com.

- You can leave the runway.
- Thank you so much.

[Amy] It feels really great
to finally win a challenge.

It was really important
for me to win this one,

so I'm really happy
that it turned out the way it did

for Nadine and I both.

It's really exciting. It's an adrenaline
rush, and I want to keep going.

Mila, another good job.

- You're in. You can leave the runway.
- Thank you.

Jesse, you're in.

- You can leave the runway.
- Thank you.

Anna, Jesus,

one of you will be out.

Jesus, your dress was trying to be
too many things at once

and ended up looking
tacky and cheap.

We again question your taste level.

Anna, you made some
serious misjudgments.

This dress was poorly made

and unflattering for
your client's figure.

Anna...

you're in.

You can leave the runway.

Thank you.

I'm sorry, Jesus. That means you're out.

Okay. Thank you.
It was a great experience.

- Auf Wiedersehen.
- Bye. Thank you.

[Jesus] I'm shocked. I'm just
really, really shocked at this point

that I've been eliminated
from the contest.

Oh, mi hijo.

But you know what?
I'm really happy because I put in my 100°/°

and I feel that at the end
I did satisfy my client.

Aw, Jesus, you're
awfully good-spirited.

I am, yeah.

Thank you so much.
It was a great experience.

- Great having you here.
- I have to send you to the workroom

- to clean up your space.
- Cool. Okay.

- We'll see more of you.
- You guys as well. Bye.

Hey, I'm only 21.

There's so much more of Jesus Estrada
that people are gonna see.

Everything the judges told me
I'm gonna take with me,

and that's just gonna make me a really,
really strong designer in the future.

Next time on Project Runway...

This challenge is one of the biggest
in the history of Project Runway,

and the reward is unprecedented.

- Whoo!
- And they're off.

- Whoa.
- I just want to get out of this alive.

- Come on.
- I'm in a mode of hysteria.

You don't want it to
look like clown clothes.

That worries me.

I wish they would give us
more time in this challenge,

but life isn't fair, so why the hell
should Project Runway be?

This would not work at all.

It's like three ingredients

that leave you feeling nauseous.
