I mean, you don't want it
to look like clown clothes.

I don't completely know
what it's gonna look like.

You did one shoulder in a new way.

that leave you feeling nauseous.

Three finalists will make it
to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Well, I won't do anything to win.

I will.

But only one can be the winner.

My weapon of choice.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway is the chance of a lifetime.

The winner of Project Runway

will receive a fashion spread
in marie claire magazine,

an opportunity to sell
their line on bluefly. Com,

a $50,000 technology suite

to create, design, and run their business

from HP and Intel,

and $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris

to launch their line.

Seth Aaron, good morning, gorgeous.

Being in the bottom three twice...
it does a lot to your spirit.

So it feels so awesome to win.

But I didn't get immunity,
so I gotta keep

my eye on the prize and stay focused.

[Janeane] Could you imagine
what it's like for Anthony?

- Yeah.
- Being on the bottom twice and then winning.

I'm just so drained.

I had the attention
of the Editor-in-Chief of marie claire,

and she really hated
what I put out there.

God!

I'm playing it safe today.

Careful because safe
could get you kicked off.

I'm getting to the point where being safe

or being in the bottom is not an option.

Oh, Lord.

And I've gotta start showing
that I'm strong enough

to be in competition
with these other designers.

Come on, Janeane. We have a date
with Heidi on the runway.

For your next challenge,
you will have new models.

These models may not have
that much experience,

but they are definitely
a very attractive little group.

- Ohh...

Oh, crap.
This is gonna be a nightmare.

Your next challenge is
to create a kids' look.

It must be age-appropriate
and, of course, fashionable.

[Jesse]
The whole thing changes.

Proportion changes, the fit changes.

You gotta figure out what it is that you
want to bring to a child

to make them feel special.

We have randomly paired each of you

with one of these adorable little girls.

- My name is Ava. My designer is Jesse.
- Hey, Ava.

My designer is... Seth.

- Aw.
- [Seth Aaron] Being a father myself,

I know there's lots of things
that kids are really specific about

and things they hate,

and I know what those are.

And my designer's name is Maya.

My designer's name is Jay.

My designer's name is Janeane.

My... designer... is... Ben.

My name is Lexi,
and my designer is Anthony.

My designer is Mila.

My designer's Jonathan.

I am scared of children.

I don't surround myself with children.

I don't have any children.

They are very small.

My name is Lauren,
and my designer is "Amerio."

My designer's name is Amy.

I am completely ecstatic.
I love mini-clothes.

Okay, designers,
Tim will meet you in the workroom

and fill you in on all of the details.

We've got these
itty-bitty little dress forms.

They're itty-bitty little girls.

- Good morning, everybody.

- So you met your adorable new clients?
- Yes.

You each have a card
with your model's measurements on it.

You will have 30 minutes to sketch,

then we're going to Mood,

where you'll have a budget of $50.

You have until midnight
tonight for this challenge,

and you will not see
your new clients again until tomorrow.

Okay, what's she wanting
to wear right now?

- I can't even draw kids.
- [Laughs]

Designers that have been
winning the challenges

are really taking a chance,

doing something that's
a little more innovative.

Maybe that's the head space
I need to get into.

Really just try to push myself,

creating something
that's a little more unusual.

Finding a way to interject Anthony
into a little girl's dress

when I celebrate the feminine silhouette
and the volume...

Honey, these little girls
ain't got no booties and no breasts,

so I'm not exactly sure
how this is gonna work.

Now, you know I am so about
what's appropriate.

[Jesse]
The thing that's coming to mind

is a trip I took to Paris,

and there were a lot
of schoolchildren sketching

at the Pompidou Centre,

so I've got this sort of schoolgirl
Madeline kind of theme going.

This is a tricky challenge.
Anyone can go home on this one.

I think all the designers
are gonna try to be innovative

and put too much of themselves
into the design,

and I'm just going
the opposite way.

I'm designing a pretty little dress.

- It's a very quiet room.
- [Laughter]

We're concentrating.
It's a very difficult challenge.

Well, you can still concentrate,

but you have to leave your table
because we're going to Mood.

All right, designers.

Your 30 minutes starts right now.

- Whoo!
- All right.

Never gonna be into that.

The most key element
in this design is going to be

the vest hoodie.

And I want to do it out of black checker

or houndstooth, and it needs
to be black and white.

You know, it's basic stretch cotton.
Where is it?

If I was a little girl, I would wear green.

I need that right there.
Ooh, I like that.

Aah.

Oh, look at...
That's a pretty color for her.

I think pink might be a cliché.

Half a yard of the yellow.

I think we need to be
a little bit more forward.

Designers, you have
ten minutes remaining.

Where's the black and white checkered?
They don't have it.

That would be perfect.

One minute remains.

I'm hauling a*s,
and I come across the houndstooth.

I find it upstairs in the wool knits.

All right, designers.
That's it. Time's up.

No more shopping.
You have to get in line now.

- I got it.
- Thank you, Mood.

Now it's entirely up to me
to deliver that vision.

Draping seems like it's a lot quicker
on a form that doesn't have any shape.

There's a lot of black
in this room for kids.

Children nowadays
are very fashion forward.

Especially when you're 8.

When you're at that age,

you move on to wearing
sophisticated pieces.

So I'm going for something
like a plum color

grounded with navy blue.

At this point, I'm feeling pretty great
about the piece that I have.

You know what, Jonathan?

You'd save a lot of time
if you just bought fabric.

You're always making it
and being all creative.

[Foreign accent]
I will not limit myself

to what the fabric store sells.

I'm going to do a dress
under a short bolero jacket.

And the short bolero jacket
will have some strips

of different colors of organdy.

I think Michael Kors
is really gonna like it.

He's like,
[imitating Michael] "She looks like

a 7-year-old waitress
from Benihana."

The look in the end will be fun

and at the same time
be sophisticated and modern.

[Imitating Kors]
It's as if

Memoirs of a Geisha met Barney.

[Laughing]

Since I really like color blocking,

I just decide to do an A-line dress,
something kind of '60s.

- It's modelicious.
- And it's color blocked. Imagine that.

When I first started Project Runway,

I wasn't getting along with people.

Oh, good. Nobody dared
go near my machine.

Top two! Top two!

But now that I'm more
centered in the workroom,

I'm getting along much better
with other designers.

Add some color block into your life!

- The color block...
- [Anthony] His color block...

You need to pay.

- [Anthony] That could be a sermon.
- [Laughter]

My design is very simple.

When my sister and I were, like, 7,

she was in a school play,
and she was a butterfly,

and she wore this
little red romper thing,

and I was always so jealous of her.

I need to make that.

You know, people are going
all out on this.

You know, lots of seaming,
lots of details,

but this needs to be something
that a little girl would want.

Your model's gonna be
such a bad-a*s in that.

She's gonna beat up my model
in the playground.

[Jesse]
She's gonna be hardcore.

- And how old is your daughter?
- She's 11 now.

She went through this phase,

and they still kind of do
this pop-rock stuff.

I know. I like traditional little kid stuff.

[Seth Aaron]
Kids want to be interested in their clothes.

They don't want some dull,
boring Easter dress.

They want soft,
they want hoodies, they want layers.

Make the clothes fun.

If I get eliminated because of a kid...

That's what I'm saying.
[Laughs]

What the...

It's too big. It's too big.

I think it's really odd that
we haven't seen Tim all day.

Do we think we're gonna get a little twist
thrown into this challenge, or what?

- Who knows?
- Sounds reasonable.

[Mila]
If there's a twist in this challenge,

I actually feel pretty good
about where I'm at.

- Crap.
- [Gasps]

But I think some other people

would be completely thrown for a loop.

I just feel like it's so yellow.

[Janeane] When I leave the
workroom, I'm a little bit worried.

I don't think this is
gonna be enough for the judges.

I know it's not
extremely innovative as a design,

but I'm hoping they'll see
that it's appropriate for childrenswear.

Coming up on Project Runway...

- You are really rocking Halloween here.
- I hate Halloween.

These pants will either stop the show,

or it's gonna be clown clothes.

you know there's trouble.

It's good news. It's a great,
great, great challenge.

But it's not to be a maxi-me
from a mini-me.

You really have to
reconceive this for an adult.

- You will have 15 minutes to sketch.
- Okay.

Then we're going to Mood,
where you'll have a budget of $100.

I'm also very pleased to tell you

that the winner of this
challenge will have immunity.

What am I gonna come up with

that will correspond
with a pink cupcake?

How am I gonna translate
this little 5-year-old princess dress

for my model Holly,

who's, like, 6-foot tall, Amazon?

I am screwed.

I'm really excited about this,
because then I have a chance

to do something
that's more elaborate

and create an entire new look

that will enhance
the childrenswear look a little bit.

Necklines can get lower,
hemlines can get higher.

We can do more of, like,
the sexy, high fashion things

that we're normally used to doing.

Are you not sketching?

No.

I took all my likes
and put it into child's.

It's everything that I love to do,

so to translate that from child to adult,
I think, is gonna be pretty simple.

[Tim]
All right, everyone. Let's head off to Mood.

All right, everyone. I have your $100,

- and you have 20 minutes to shop.

What happened to that?

When I think of the word
"companion piece,"

I think it needs to be
in the same show.

It needs to be in the same season,
the same color story.

It needs to have that same sensibility.

Ten minutes, everybody.

They don't have anything
that's a gray and red mixture in a print.

This is kind of interesting.

But I do find a black and white
paisley design.

I feel like it has sort of that French flair
a little bit still.

- I'm just going with my gut.
- [Tim] Designers, that's it.

- She's ringing me up.
- Time... Everybody has to get in line now.

Thank you. Okay.

- Thank you, Mood.
- [Designers] Thank you.

This is a hard challenge
because I felt like

I put so much into this first outfit,

and you've got to, like,

make another look that's just as strong.

I know.

You want even more genius? God.

Ooh. I don't know.

A little close, but we will see.

I just really like the idea
of going from a skirt to a pant.

I have all these colors
that I'm trying to work with in a range

and create a kind of graphic element.

But I have no clue at all
how it's gonna come all together.

[Sighs]

[Anthony]
My feet hurt.

I feel like I work in the chicken shack
or something today.

[Laughing]

Y'all, my mom has a bad cough.

[Sighs]
So everybody in church was like,

"Who was that
hacking out their lungs during service?"

When Anthony opens his mouth,
he'll weave a story.

So, in your mind,
you could tell she's like,

[coughing]
"Damn"...

- [laughing]
- You made me forget my measurement there.

- I'm sorry, sister. I won't talk no more.
- Yeah, right.

Are y'all, like, trying to bet me
how long I can go without talking?

We challenged him to see how far he could
go without having to say anything.

Oh, my gosh, you can get a lot done
when you shut the hell up.

The cotton organza
was a last-night decision.

I thought the dress
was very plain, and it was very yellow.

So what's going on
with the look for your model?

Okay, so this is just
the base right now.

I bought more of
the white cotton organza,

and this is actually
going to be over the entire dress.

Well, it's gonna be
an attention grabber.

Absolutely. [laughs]

For the older version,
I'm using that fabric twice.

- I really love it.
- You are really rocking Halloween here

with the black
and this corally orange.

I see these colors as being
pink and black and white.

I would never design something

inspired by Halloween
because I hate Halloween.

Just be prepared
for a response to that.

- Hi, Tim.

...you have a little factory here.

- Yeah.
- What are you doing?

So, um, to go back
to my little girl's look,

taking that same type
of petal shape,

mixing up the colors and actually
laying it onto another fabric

and making it into a loose-fitting pant.

These pants will either
stop the show,

or it's gonna be clown clothes.

I completely understand

that I'm running that risk
right now.

And I'm thrilled that you are.

You know, it's a lot better
than playing it safe.

- We'll see.
- I'm not gonna waste any more of your time.

This is my completed child's look,

including small handbag.

My daughter... she collects
handbags at this age.

She had, like, 200 of them.

What I have done is stitched on
to create a hounds...

But it gives it that effect.

I'm really excited about
what you all are doing.

are really designed,

I hope it's enough for the judges.

This has been my strategy
all along...

to be safe
to about the halfway point,

and to really start pulling out
the big tricks for the judges.

As you know, in fashion,

one day you're in,
and the next day you're out.

There are 11 of you here,
and after tonight,

there will be ten.

Now, more than ever,
children are becoming little fashionistas.

So with that in mind,

the first part of your challenge

was to design an age-appropriate
and fashionable children's look.

Then we gave you a little twist.

We asked you to create
a companion look for an adult.

All right. Let's meet the judges.

First, we have top American
designer Michael Kors.

American designer,

whose lifestyle brand is very popular

among women of all ages,
including little girls,

How are you?

We will score your designs
as they come down the runway.

One of you will be named the winner,

and one of you will be out.

Let's start the show.

[Anthony]
Two looks that I created

are very cohesive through style lines,

coloring, the ruffled detail,

all of those things...

It looks really beautiful on the runway.

When they came out,
it was so graphic and fun.

I don't know how
it's gonna be received,

but I know that it's creative,

it's different, and it's inspiring.

I'm extremely pleased
with the two looks

and think that I kept my inspiration
and my design intact,

and I'm very proud of that.

I'm ecstatic. It's exactly
what I was going for.

Now, whether they're gonna see
my interpretation as I see it,

that's yet to be decided.

I mean, I wouldn't
change a damn thing.

Everything looks really good
up there on the runway.

Everything is moving really well.

When you get it onto the runway,

you're not always sure
how well it's gonna move.

It looks like a comfortable
and a cute little girl's outfit.

I think Alexis looks great.

The dress really fits her perfectly.

So I'm super excited about that.

Seeing Brandise's dress on the runway

is, like, such
a wow moment for me.

The petals are moving
the way they were supposed to.

The color looks gorgeous on her,

and it's just really stunning.

I'm so excited about my two outfits.

It's my first time doing childrenswear.

And I think she looks absolutely great.

I'm so happy with my jacket.

It was such a risk
with such a bright color,

but I think I really turned it out.

When I see Haley and Cerri together,
completely dressed,

I think they look so adorable.

They just look so cute,
and I'm very pleased

with the way
the two outfits look together.

Lauren... she was so adorable
on that runway,

and she looked like a little princess.

And Holly looked like

a very, very well kept,
expensive mother.

I'm happy. I mean,

I know that it's a really simple look.

And I think
they look great together.

You know, they look
like they belong together.

I'm feeling very happy.

I've created two amazing outfits.

They're sewn perfectly.

And I need to win this.
I'm gonna win this.

Jesse, tell us about your two looks.

Well, first, the big red coat
kind of popped into my head.

And I wanted to match it

with just something a little
bit more interesting,

so I did the A-line section
kind of skewed.

And then, with
the next-day challenge,

decided just to kind of do
the very streamlined and tailored look.

I think you did a good job.

I would've preferred
the dress to be straight.

Well, with the detail in the back,
it's actually skewed.

I think that informs
the whole thing a little bit more.

I think it's a job well done.

I love the color combos.

And, also, you attempted to do
some real tailoring with that coat.

I like that you chose gray

because I like unusual colors
on little girls.

Ava, how do you like your outfit?

Uh, a lot.

I think it looks adorable.

I think the hair accessories is adorable,

and I think the model mom
looks pretty good.

Seth Aaron,
tell us about your two looks.

It's all about comfort,

so all my fabrics are really soft.

That was important.
Of course, pink and white... a must.

Denim. And I just added
my wave flair to it,

which is zippers, hardware.

And then we gotta put
the stars with the label.

And so, pulling off that inspiration,

I was able to step into
my mod, New Wave feel...

hardware, skinnies, and zipper details.

First, I want to know from Sydney,

how you like your outfit.

I like it.

What do you like about it?

The purse.

You have an adult's look
and a child's look

that are both really super and strong.

And I have to say that this jacket

is the best tailored garment
we have seen this season.

Wow.

This outfit on a little girl
seems to me like something

that a little girl
would dream of wearing,

and it's not something
that I've seen before.

You thought about the purse.
You thought about integrating

your style into this.

- So bravo.
- Thank you.

It's really good.

Jay, tell us about your two looks.

Savannah is my model. She's 8,

so I did this drop-waist dress

with the ruffling around the hip,

and I paired it back
to a pair of denim with a gold lyric.

And then with my model,

I mimicked the ruffling detail.

I wanted to make her more adult
and more sophisticated,

so I decided to go with the blacks.

I lot of design
and a lot of thought has gone into it.

It's not just like a simple little dress.

[Michael]

Janeane, tell us about your two looks.

When I started thinking
about childrenswear,

I thought about
being comfortable, being active.

I don't know.
I just wanted something

that she could run around in all day,

and it would be, like, her favorite dress.

I'm not sure if I like the fact
that it was so plain.

I think I would've like
to see more whimsy.

And it's too simple.
It's a design competition.

The whole combination is awful.

It looks like a cheap mall outfit.

And that has nothing to do with you.

You did a fantastic job
on the runway today.

I like leggings on a little girl,

but I think a different top
would've been better.

Something that was
a little more unusual, a little different.

The jacket just looks really
like a home ec project.

There's nothing polished
about that jacket.

Jonathan, tell us about your looks.

Well, I started with
the fabulous Fabriana.

I wanted to give her an outfit

that was a little girl's dress
but with an edge.

When we worked backwards
into the adult look,

I chose to create a textile
with cotton organza

using the same sleeve treatment

and, actually, the same
silver cotton sateen

which is the jacket of Fabriana's outfit.

It looks uncomfortable,
that little bolero.

Is that comfortable?

It's kind of, like, pushing into my skin.

I think you had
the opposite problem than Janeane.

You went too sophisticated,
too conceptual.

I understood that this was a risk.

I definitely wanted to take a risk.

You know, I get what you
were going for here,

but she literally looks like she got caught
in a tornado of toilet paper.

And think about the body.

My God, if she looks like toilet paper,

what is a normal woman gonna look like?

[Heidi]
Amy, tell us about your look.

For beautiful Caitlin,
I did a little petal skirt.

I kind of created the textile myself,
using tonal oranges.

And for Alison, I used
the same color palette,

and I used the same shape
as the petals.

And I'm actually really excited about it.

I have a feeling, Amy,
that it wasn't intentional.

Caitlin looks like the house is on fire,

and she grabbed every garment
in the house,

and she just ran out of the house.

And then Mom... I mean, those pants
are just a train wreck.

The entire effect is very confusing,

circus-like.

It's weird.

I think it's hideous.

It's just bizarre.

I actually like it a little bit.

- What's your favorite piece?
- It would be the sweater.

- But would you wear it together?
- With Amy,

- I would trust her fashion sense.
- Okay.

[Tory] I think my biggest problem
with it is the color palette.

It's really throwing me
because I don't really feel

those colors work together.

I don't find it necessarily
that unappealing,

but I do think it is...

it's a different color combination,
definitely.

- Let's start with Jesse.
- Yes, it was a very traditional outfit,

and he managed to give it
a little bit of a sense of humor.

He made a hair accessory.
I thought that was nice, too.

- And we're forgetting...
- He made a coat.

We're forgetting,
he made a tailored wool coat.

- Coat.
- The mom was so sexy,

and then you have
this traditional, beautiful little girl.

I don't think I've ever noticed

the model Alexis
as much as today. I agree.

- The dress was really pretty rocking.
- It was perfect.

Let's move on to Seth Aaron.

It was a much more sophisticated take,
more hard edge,

but then, when we got to the child's look,

it had whimsy.

I think kids love to have
a little fun with their clothes.

A little girl would love to wear that outfit.

A child would be like,
"Mommy, buy that for me."

Let's move on to Jay.

Even though
it was that sophisticated,

it still was youthful, it still had charm.

The knit pants I love.

- I think they're really chic.
- Yeah.

You had pieces that
were great on their own.

The styling was key here.

Okay, let's move on
to the designers with the lowest scores.

Let's start with Amy.

[Groans]

If we would've had to guess today
who everyone's outfit is,

I would've never thought
that this was from Amy.

Different is nice,
but it sure isn't pretty.

This was just different
for different's sake.

I'm not sure that blue and orange
are that complementary.

- Do you think so?
- [All] No.

Let's move on to Janeane.

[Michael] To me, it just looked
like stuff you bought on markdown.

The jacket is really the worst for me.

This children's outfit was $50.

- I think you could buy that for $10.
- Yeah.

Jonathan, on the other hand,
was very ambitious,

and he wanted to do
a lot of things in two days.

[Michael]
The conceptual toilet paper twins.

And you're gonna put her
in that little bolero.

I don't really love the dress.

He did not know how to balance it.
