like it's kind of a bummer

and it's really exciting.

Hi, Michael.

Hey, guys. Welcome to my SoHo store
here in New York City.

I'm very excited to talk to you guys
about today's challenge.

I really want to see you guys
push the envelope,

and I want you to think
a little outside of the box

and think in an unconventional way.

So today, for your challenge,

you are gonna be shopping at...

a hardware store.

- [Designers gasping]
- Thanks, Michael.

We're going to be creating a look
using materials from a hardware store,

and I honestly could not be more excited.

I don't feel good about this.

This is not what I do.
I don't make crafty things.

I make very sophisticated dresses.

And, guys, in addition to apparel,

you will be designing an accessory

to complement
and enhance your look.

So, guys, it is so important

to think about a head-to-toe look...

from fabulous hair and makeup,
down to the feet,

and a fabulous accessory.

You know what? Get shopping.

Michael, thank you so much.

Let's head to the hardware store.

[Tim] Designers, welcome
to Scheman & Grant Hardware,

which is a very inspiring place.

You have a budget of $150 each.

You will have 35 minutes to shop.

And your 35 minutes starts right now.

Who's here? I need someone.

[Jesse]
Hardware's not cheap.

That really worries me
as far as getting enough materials

and getting the right materials

to be able to make something spectacular.

Do you have, like, sheets of metal?

I love this challenge.
I'm really excited.

I have some experience working with,
you know, strange objects.

I've made some dresses
out of screen before.

Designers, you have
five minutes remaining.

Not only do you have to make a garment

using these supplies
from the hardware store,

you also have to make an accessory.

Why me?
[Laughing]

Everyone has sheets of metals

or things that you can buy yardage of.

I went the other route.

I have some washers and some cord.

That's all I have.

I'm gonna try and make garbage bags

feel like a leather material.

I don't know how
I'm gonna accomplish that.

Designers, you have
one minute remaining.

- Aah!
- That's it.

Scream for help.

The first thing that pops into my head
is sandpaper,

just because of the different textures
and the different colors.

I think it's gonna be perfect to use
for a challenge like this.

All right, designers. That's it.

No more shopping. Time's up.

Oh, wait.

- You got two of these?
- Yeah. Two.

Then you don't have enough.

I realize that I'm way over budget,

and I have to leave half of my cord

and half of my washers,

so I'm working with less material,

and I have to make it happen.

It's just one of those challenges.
It can go any way.

I know that a lot of the designers
are gonna take the easy way out,

which is to make a dress.

And I want to challenge myself
and come up with something

that is a pair of pants that'll fit well,

which is probably
gonna be challenging,

because what can you do
with a trash bag?

Looking around the room,
it's definitely... it's crazy.

I mean, we've all got different ideas,
and we're all going for them.

So you kind of hope, not in a mean way,
but hope somebody crashes and burns

so then you can go "All righty.
I'm okay, 'cause he's screwed."

I'm making a necklace,

and it's going to be
a rather large necklace,

which is gonna be pretty heavy
since it's made of keys.

And it's gonna be
the focal point of the piece.

The judges always
talk about innovation.

At this point, I'm thinking that

the innovative part of my garment

will be taking something
that is hard and industrial

and giving it a very soft and airy feel.

Who doesn't know
what they're doing? Me.

[Both laugh]

Who's clueless? Me.

It's a huge pain in the a*s
to work with hardware.

You really have to spend a lot of time

getting accustomed to
all these wacky new materials.

Ladies and gentlemen, straight off
the periodic table of elements, copper!

[Both laugh]

I like Jonathan because he is just
so damn funny.

Everything that he says is hilarious.

We have a lot of fun
just laughing together,

and it kind of takes the stress off.

[Emilio]
I notice that everyone else

is molding bodices out of metal.

And to me, that's been done.

My plan of attack is to create
a Paco Rabanne/macramé dress

using the washers and the cord.

But I don't have enough
washers or cords.

I may not have a full dress.

I see Emilio's piece, and I'm thinking
in the back of my head,

I'm like,
"What the hell is he making?"

He's making a stripper outfit.

[Jesse]
We are making space suits.

This is fashion, honey.

- And stripper costumes.
- And stripper costumes.

[Laughs]
Got the macramé going on.

Oh, that's definitely creative.

You know what?

- Just shut your face.
- I meant that in a good way.

Whatever. It is what it is.

Coming up on Project Runway...

I can't believe my [bleep] shrunk
as I was sewing it.

What is it with you guys
and this copper?

One, it's a garbage bag.

- Yes.

I'm gonna have to move
out of New York. [chuckling]

[Tim]
This is looking tortured.

The object of this game is to take
tools from a hardware store

and make something
that has some wearability.

It's a lot of look.

There's a lot to do, yeah.

I'm very frustrated today,
and the pressure is mounting.

Everyone is just trying to work
with these materials

that aren't really made
to create clothing with.

So much for our manicures, Maya.

I had no idea what I was in store for
when I got the copper,

because, as of right now,
my hands look like

I've been attacked by a feral animal.

Are you color blocking the pain?

Color block, take me away.

I'm hoping that the judges
don't get sick

of my black and white element.

That's always been
a signature for me.

[Chattering]

[Ioud banging]

There's a lot of chaos and noise.

It's just not an ideal situation for me
to create my best work.

- Is that stuff sticky?
- Yeah.

'Cause I got some sticky crap here,

and I'm like, "Oh, it's sticky."

The skirt material is this mesh

that, when I opened it,
I realized it's sticky.

I wanted a nice, flowy skirt

to counteract the really strict
corseted bodice.

So, basically, I'm screwed,

because this is, like,
the largest piece of tape

you've ever seen in your life.

[High-pitched voice]
I'm making leather out of trash bags.

This is a dream
that I've been wanting

to fulfill since I was little.

I want this badly.

And my parents would be
so proud of me

if I won Project Runway.

They know that this
is what I want to do in life.

I'm the fifth in the family.
I have a younger sister.

And I remember, when we were little,

that we've always fought
for everything that we want in life.

And, to me, that tells a lot

about me as a person
and as a competitor.

[Ben] I was able to sew
through the copper flashing.

- [Anthony] Through the who?
- This.

You are lying.
[Gasps]

Many of us in the room
are finding a way to sew our materials.

So I flip my dress inside
to sew the back seam.

It went in like this,
and it came out like that.

These materials are really
starting to control me.

$45 for a roll of duct tape, honey,

and it does not feel
like it sticks to anything.

The rope that I bought
at the hardware store

is Venetian blind cord.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to sew it,

and I hope that it goes
through the machine,

because if not, I'm gonna
have to do a lot of hand stitching.

- Hi, everybody.

I feel like I'm in
the Arms and Armor wing of the Met.

All right. I'm here

Obviously, it's very mod inspired
with the black and white.

And I'm really just using
paint tray liners

and gaffer's tape.

What's really supporting it on her?

Will this sit on her hip?

I might have to contour it
a little bit more.

What are you doing
for the accessory?

I'm going to do a really wide cuff.

- Using this as a cuff, you're saying?
- Uh-huh.

- I just liked that it had text on it.
- Mm-hmm.

I was thinking sort of
Elizabethan, sort of...

Elizabethan mini?

Well, I'm just... I'm...

The skirt is a work in progress.

So are you going to cover
all this textile?

I don't know.

This is looking so
school project, school play.

And not even a high school
or college.

Like elementary school.

What is it with you guys
and this copper?

This is all hand seamed with metal wire.

You'd never know.

What are you doing
for the accessory?

I was thinking of doing a hairpiece.

- All right.
- A little cap kind of.

Something that would, like,
comb up the back of the head

into the top, into the crown.

Sort of that Dior old school,
really odd crazy hat kind of thing.

Just watch the costume aspect
of the whole thing.

- What are you doing?
- I'm creating

intergalactic macramé,

flapper, something.

What is it, a miniskirt?
Is it a bikini?

Miniskirt.

And do you have enough
of the hardware?

I hope so.

I don't know.

I can't, 'cause last time,
one of my dresses was too short.

- I have to work it out, Tim, honestly.

This is a doozy.

Well, your innovation can be

the presentation
of a bottomless dress.

[Laughs]

I knew by the color it was you.
What are you doing?

I think I'm probably gonna
keep my structure at the top,

but explore some different things
at the bottom,

'cause I'm not officially impressed

with the way this
has turned out so far.

This looks tortured.

Trying to just manipulate it

through that machine, it just took a turn...

- It's not pretty.
...toward horror.

Tim's visit confirmed what I
already am trying to do anyway.

I think that we're on the same page.

And that's really just
abandoning the original skirt

and moving forward with something
that's light and airy,

and where the fabric just
won't look as tortured.

We went to a hardware store to shop.

How did you make
a pair of leather pants?

- Right? This is what I came up with.
- What is it?

Well, this... it's garbage bag.

- What... It's a garbage bag?
- Yes.

I mean, if I had seen you
with a box of garbage bags,

I would've said, "Jay..."

The pants are spectacular.

How does she get in and out?

Well, I wanted a side zipper,

- but I'm gonna have to sew this on her.
- Yeah, you will.

As I'm building it, it's shrinking.

At this point, it's too late.

I'm just hoping it'll fit her.

Oh, listen, if the pant
goes away because of the fit,

- that's a problem.
- Yeah.

What are you doing
for your accessory?

Maybe a belt. I think she needs a belt.

But it's important,
so don't let it be 11:30,

and I'm just livid and freaking out.

I can't believe
my [bleep] shrunk as I was sewing it.

to even try on her,

and I'm trying to cover

a six-foot tall, blonde Amazon woman.

I thought I got enough washers
that it would work,

but it's not working.

So we're making a bathing suit.

I am losing it.

I cut two inches straps

of the material that I have

and put them on both sides
of the pant,

and I just hope that it's gonna fit her

when she comes back tomorrow
and tries the pants again.

As far as accessories,

I want to come up with a really sexy belt

that's gonna cinch Brittany in
around the waist.

Time to cut more squares.

[Jesse]
Ben and Jonathan both picked up

the copper flashing that I picked up,

and I've decided that I do have paint,

so I'm definitely gonna use it
to transform what I've made

into something that's even more
than just copper flashing.

But there's nothing
I can do at this point.

Time's been spent, and it is what it is,

'cause at this point,
there's no chance to redesign.

I had to make a drastic change
in our outfit.

- Don't freak out.

the bikini bottom up?

[Anthony] I don't think that
it's done in the best of taste.

It's really hard
to be excited this morning

at the runway show
because so many variables

go into this kind of, you know, challenge.

The dress could fall apart at any second.

But my problem is I'm working
with a plastic garbage bag,

and once you put a hole
in that material,

it's permanent, it's there.

So she can't really go and pee.

It's still tight.

that never goes out of style

is making a woman look like a lady.

This is surprisingly comfortable.

by First Lady Michelle Obama
at the president's inauguration,

world-renowned jewelry designer.

We will score your designs
as they come down the runway.

Okay, let's start the show.

I think this piece is really
representative of me as a designer.

It references the past,
but I think it's modern.

I really pushed myself on this one,

and it really shows
the graphic nature of my work.

The look floats wonderfully,

and Alexis wears it really well.

Whether somebody loves it or hates it,
they're interested in it,

and I think that's my goal, ultimately,
with this kind of challenge,

and I think I definitely
succeeded in that.

This dress has achieved every
single thing I wanted it to.

The movement around Cerri's body,

the sheen of the copper
under the runway lights,

the harmony between
the color of her and the dress

is absolutely perfect.

I couldn't have asked
for anything better.

I love this dress.

It looks like fashion. It looks like fabric.

It is very feminine. It is sexy.

And to me,
that's what fashion should be.

The dress looks like
it's just levitating around her,

which is kind of cool.

Like, it's resting on her shoulders,
but it doesn't touch the rest of her body.

It does have a sense of futurism.
It does look a little retro, too.

It definitely embodies
what I would've done with fabric anyway.

Holly turned the corner and, literally,

you can hear people's jaws drop.

I don't know if it's dropped
because she looks amazing,

or they're thinking,
"What the hell just happened?"

It's such a strong look
that either you like it or you hate it.

There's no in between.
I don't think anyone on this earth

would've realized that that
came out of a hardware store.

That's me as a designer.

I have goose bumps,
at this point, watching her

walk down the runway.

I've pushed myself
to come up with something

amazing out of trash bag.

It's incredible.
I mean, it's exactly what I was going for.

There's nothing I would change.

And my model... she's loving it.

Really confident in what I did.

So I'm feeling awesome.

The silhouette and the fit are great on her.

I created a pattern that is interesting,

and the usage of the sandpaper
to create a kind of textile

is definitely representative
of how I like to work.

She looks sophisticated
and fashion forward.

I can see the judges,
like, really studying her,

and that's a good sign,

because I want them to wonder
"What is that made of?"

And what is it made of?

These are paint tray liners.

And I was just really inspired
by the glossy black and white.

I knew that with this,
I wanted to do something

kind of mod and graphic.

And I love the texture of them.

I thought it was extraordinary.

The fact that you made it flow...
it's amazing.

That is something that naturally is stiff.

I guess, just by cutting it up is brilliant.

And that accessory...

it's definitely the wittiest accessory.

I didn't know what it said,
but that's brilliant.

I like the transformation
of the material, too.

I think that's amazing.

Bravo, indeed.

Emilio, tell us about your look
and how you made it.

I wanted to create
a very strong, sexy woman,

so I used three different sizes of washers

and twine and bolts and wire
to create a bathing suit look.

I want to ask, Emilio, what happened?

Why did you choose
not to do any clothing?

I figured everyone
was gonna do a dress,

and a swimsuit is something
that you probably

wouldn't associate
with a hardware store.

I like the full effect because she looks
like a Barbie doll,

and I think you just went with it.

But the simple truth is,
she looks really cheesy.

I mean, that's a full cheese-fest.

I think, thank God
you figured out to make it

- into a one-piece.
- Yeah.

Or you'd have a bottomless
moment here on Project Runway.

I can't find a pattern to it.

It just looks thrown on.

I like all the thoughts you had about
everybody else was gonna make a dress,

Tell us about your look.

I thought that my innovation
for this particular challenge

was taking the harsh mesh
that was attacking me

and finding a way
to bring some softness to it.

Honestly, it looks like
kind of a bad prom dress.

It seems too... boring.

You struggled to make this so pretty

and so soft that you missed the point.

I would've loved to have seen something

that I would've thought,
"Wow, that's genius."

You should've gone with the fact
that you're in a hardware store.

Anthony, I think you went
to the software store, didn't you?

Not the hardware store.

Maya, tell us about your look.

I wanted to create a jacket
that was see-through in open weave.

And this is screen. The dress is screen.

I knew I had to do an accessory,

and I saw these keys,
and they really called out to me.

They were sort of, like, jewels,

and I mixed them in with the chain.

And the silver is actually a dog collar.

This was truly a head-to-toe look.

They were normal pieces

looked at in an abnormal way.

The jacket, the necklace, the hair...

You showed restraint
and just held back on the dress,

and it was just the right thing to do.

You would not think that this look
comes out of the hardware store.

If you would see this shot
in marie claire magazine,

you would not question it.

Jesse, tell us about your look.

So I grabbed copper flashing,

which is what
the bodice is made out of,

and then this mesh,
which is like a drywall fixer,

and everything's getting
cinched around the waist with some wire.

It feels a little bit like the Tin Man
from The Wizard of Oz.

[Stephen]
I do like the hair accessory.

It works well with the hair,
so that's a good look.

I think her hair with that headband

is cool and modern-Iooking,

and then, all of a sudden,

she's dressed up as a Hershey Kiss.

I don't know what she's dressed up as,
but it's a costume.

My favorite thing
as far as the design detail...

Can you turn around?

The asymmetry of the back
and the stitching there

is the only thing that
a modern woman in real life

would say, "Oh, there's
something cool about that."

It looks like he's gonna
press a button somewhere,

there's gonna be a big load of noise,

and you start vacuuming
the floor with it.

- That's really the weakest part.
- Yeah, it looks like a dirty vacuum bag.

A dirty one. Yeah.
[Chuckling]

Jay, tell us about your look.

This is the outfit
that I came up with,

and it's made out of trash bags.

I added the blue masking tape
just to add color to it.

I made this braided belt
and a pair of leather pants

with these pleat details going on.

I think it is amazing

that you made black trash bags
look like that.

Especially the belt.

It looks like a leather woven belt.

- It's fantastic.

In a million years,

I did not think that this
was bias-cut trash bags.

It took a lot of thinking to get to this.

I was very impressed
with her garment.

She really thought about this.

you know, the challenge.

And it was hard.

What she picked as material
was very hard.

I think that's a real vision.

So, then, you look at someone
like Jay, for example,

who we also loved.

If you didn't know it was garbage bags,

his girl could walk off the runway
and probably go out to dinner.

He made a luxury product sort of
out of the least luxurious thing,

and that thing just reeked of luxury.

Let's discuss Maya.

You could dissemble what she did.

They were all pieces
that stood on their own.

It was very wearable
and fashion forward

all in the same time.

Maya's necklace was, hands down,

the strongest accessory piece

- we saw on the runway today.
- I agree.

that we didn't like so much.

What do you think about Emilio's?

I think it's a bloody disaster, really.

And when he said,
"Well, I knew everyone else

was gonna make a dress"...

So, you know, "Oh,
I'm gonna be crafty and smart."

I liked that he actually thought,

"Well, if everybody else is
gonna make a dress"...

Now, if it would've been
a successful garment...

- That's different.
- Yes.

It's just not his taste.

Oh, cut to the chase.
There was no taste.

He did hit the hardware store
and get hardware.

I don't think it was so bad.

He didn't handle the material
as it should've been handled.

I think that he thought he had to
make it look like real fabric.

and you'd just go past it.

He tried too much to make it pretty.

He goes to the hardware store

and got conservative

and became very uptight.
