to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Well, I won't do anything to win.

I will.

But only one can be the winner.

My weapon of choice.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway is the chance of a lifetime.

The winner of Project Runway

will receive a fashion spread
in marie claire magazine,

an opportunity to sell
their line on bluefly. Com,

a $50,000 technology suite

to create, design, and run their business

from HP and Intel,

and $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris
to launch their line.

I got spanked by Heidi and Michael,
and I've learned my lesson.

The hardware challenge
judging was a m*ssacre.

I don't ever wanna see
a freaking hardware store again.

The only thing
that weighed heavy on my heart

was that I was in the bottom two
with my roommate Jesse.

But someone had to go home,
and I was just glad it wasn't me.

At the very beginning,
it was sort of intimidating

'cause everybody's so unique and different
and cool in their own way.

But now you sort of really see
the humanity in people.

She's an old soul.

Like, I mean, I'm twice her age, almost.

But every day, we learn something new

about each other that we share in common,

and she feels like a friend.

If she were to be in, and I were to be out,

I mean, I would be happy for her.

So I don't think there is,

like, a hyper-competition between us.

That might change.

We're like the Victoria's Secret Wonderbra.
We lifted each other.

It's really cool, though,
the four of us are still together.

I mean, the four of us have
a completely different point of view.

Being safe again, uh, just...

I mean, at least I'm being consistent.
That's one thing.

But I was really hoping that something
would've stuck out, you know, by now.

What does Tim always say to you?
Trust your...

- Listen to your gut.
- Oh, my viscera.

Which part of your body is that?

I don't know. I was looking for my viscera
for two days.

I am delighted to introduce you
to Philip Carreon,

celebrity hairstylist for Garnier.

Nice to be here.

Designers, I want you
to consider where you are.

There is not an environment anywhere

that personifies manmade
more than this one.

But for this challenge,
we're stepping away from the manmade.

We're going back to nature.

The inspiration for your design

will come from one of
the four natural elements...

earth, air, fire, or water.

And to tell you more,
I'm turning things over to Philip.

At Garnier Fructis, natural elements

in beauty technology.

Find your inspiration
in the natural world,

and the Garnier team will create
the perfect complementary hairstyle

to stand up to whatever
force of nature you create.

Jay, you won the last challenge,

so you get to choose
any element you want...

earth, air, water, fire.

- Which one?
- Air.

Air. There are now eight cards,

two cards containing
each of the four elements.

Is that clear? So as I call your name,

you'll come up
and choose one of them.

All right? Maya.

So Maya has chosen water.

Jonathan.

When there's so few designers now,

every decision, every cut,

every shopping trip at Mood
is so important.

Jonathan has air.

It's definitely do-or-die time.

Ben, you're next.

Ben has chosen water.

Mila.

I'm an earth sign.

My designs are not what somebody

would usually equate with earth.

With that said,
I would try to think outside the box.

Anthony's on fire.

- Yes. Deal with it.
- Whoo!

Amy is on fire as well.

Earth.

So Emilio has earth.

That means, Seth Aaron, you have air.

Instantly, I think of happy, blue [beep].

So, I'm totally, like, confused.

All right. Let's head back
to the workroom and sketch.

All right, designers.
You have 30 minutes to sketch,

then we're going to Mood,
where you will have a budget of $150.

I start sketching,
and water's just too fluid for me.

So the first thing I think of are sharks.

So I've decided
that I'm gonna do a suit.

It does take extreme tailoring to,
you know, put a suit together.

But I still feel that I need to show them
another side of my design style.

I selected earth.

And Monique is of color,

so I think I can do something
to compliment her skin tone.

So I go with a strapless dress

that I am going to create
some draping and some volume.

For me, this challenge
may prove to be difficult

because I'm just trying
to work through the design

to make sure that it encompasses
everything I want to present.

Failure is not an option at this point,
so onward and upward.

When I thought about water,
I thought about the ocean,

and I thought about sirens.

And sirens are kind of
like vixens of the water.

So my whole look is gonna be
based on this woman

sort of, like, coming out of the water,
and she's very serene.

I'm going to do a very Jonathan thing,

which is creating my own textile.

I'm gonna sew layers
of fabric together,

and then cut away at them
at different levels

to play with opacity,

which gives you
the impression of airiness.

I want her to look like
she's enveloped in a swirl

of uncontrollable laughter.

All right, designers.

We're going off to Mood.

I want to do something with kind of like
a tornado-like feel to the garment

by doing, you know, bold stripes
and, um, a lot of movement.

Ten minutes remaining.

I'll go with both of these.

- 2.

- Anthony, is that your gray palette?
- Mm-hmm.

Different for you.

I don't think of red when I think of fire.

It kind of goes very deep for me,
because my pastor...

somebody deliberately
burned his house to the ground.

I thought about the remains,

and, like, it was dark and smoky.

Good. Just be you, though.

You know what?

Inspiration is really
about building a structure,

and the inside of it
is where the expl*si*n is happening.

I think everybody is starting

to get a little bit nervous
because it's only a few of us,

so we really have to do better
than we've done before.

Even Anthony has been
surprisingly quiet for a change.

The concepts are a little bit
ambiguous or vague in a way,

and I think it just makes all of us
feel really nervous and unsettled.

Amy, you're awful quiet.

Well, I'm doing something that's
really annoying right now.

The competition is getting harder,
especially with managing time,

and so I need to step it up
and make sure that what I'm doing,

I'm capable of constructing
with the amount of time allotted.

I think I'm definitely taking
a gamble with this challenge,

'cause, like, I'm doing a suit in a day.

Are you as sick of being safe
all the time as I am?

Being safe is a big old question mark.

What is it? What are they waiting to see
from me that I'm not showing them?

The week that I was like,
"I'm sick of being safe,

I'm taking a chance,"
I was in the bottom two.

- Okay.
- You're like, "No more of that."

That chance didn't work.

I think it's getting to the point where
these designers don't think I'm a threat,

and that is so untrue.

They just are completely blind to the fact
that I am gonna win this whole contest.

Coming up on Project Runway...

All of the designers
are in a state of panic.

Everyone else is freaking out
as much as I am.

- Make it harmonious.
- Ben's trousers are just awful.

We are all scared to death.

For this challenge,
we can really do a lot

because it's all about innovation,

so I'm creating kind of
a unique silhouette.

I'm just really nervous

because it's very possible
that it's not gonna be well received.

- Hello, everybody.
- [Philip] Hi, everyone.

I have Philip Carreon with me.

- Hi.
- [Designers] Hi.

We're heading down to the Garnier salon

so we can do some consultations.

We get to meet with Philip
from Garnier for this challenge.

I think the hair we're gonna do
is just gonna take us to the next level.

I want her to look like
she's enveloped in laughter.

I think it would be nice
to do big, chunky curls.

I'm gonna use the Flexible Control

just because we'll get a nice,

soft, beautiful,
flowing look out of her hair.

I want this to feel
kind of like a whirlwind.

I'm gonna take a little bit
of this Full Control spray

and just give you an idea,
because it's nice and strong.

- Like that nice shape.
- Yeah.

And out big to the point

it comes accentuated way out here.

It's very aerodynamic
and defying gravity.

We need to get texture into her hair.

You see it already wants
to stand out a little bit.

I'm gonna start with Mr. Jonathan.

How are you doing?

My inspiration was actually
the lightest side of air,

which I thought to be laughter.

- That's a nice thought.

So what I'm doing is I'm cutting away

different levels to reveal different colors.

Oh, this is created by you.

All right. I'm gonna let you get to work,

'cause this is really stunning.

Seth Aaron, you've achieved a lot.

Talk to me.

So my inspiration is
sitting in my apartment at night

looking out at the city.

I want to give it
the appearance of wind.

What I love about this
is that... true to you,

it really pushes the envelope,
but it's believable.

- Amy. How are you doing?
- Hi, Tim.

What I really want to do...
My element is fire.

To have a kind of contained chaos.

- Okay.
- So I'm pretty much creating

virtually like a bowl around her.

After I spoke to the hair guy,

I realized that it would've been great
if I created this bowl

and had her hair kind of fill it.

I think that would be amazing.

It's a really interesting idea...

- I know.
...I have to say.

- And I'm just really...
- Here's my advice.

- Let this just distill within you...
- Mm-hmm.

Talk to me about your design.

I got the element water,

and the concept is inspired
by great white sharks.

I'm using these kind of,
like, fleshy tones

to kind of adhere the concept
of, like, the anatomy.

I'm worried about
your work in particular

because I feel like
the subtleties and nuances

aren't being picked up by the judges.

That's why I went the route
of doing a suit

rather than a dress or...

For this concept,
this is what it really demands.

- Hi.

This textile is a wow.

My element is earth,

and I decided to go
with a sort of mineral inspiration.

I'm doing a sleeveless jacket,

and I'm just trimming it
with this sort of g*n-metal leather.

It's going over this sheer wool knit.

I'm going to do it
like a long turtleneck.

And then pants...
I'm just doing a stretch wool.

I think I'm going to go
with a fuller pant.

It's good counterpoint
to have a fuller pant.

What I would be most mindful of

is how it all lines up,

and make adjustments accordingly

- so that it's just harmonious.
- Right.

So, Maya, what are you doing?

Okay, so my element is water.

I want it to look like a sea creature,

like she's sort of coming out of water.

I was just thinking glamorous,

classy, sophisticated, modern.

- It's who you are.
- Yeah.

I have every confidence
you can pull this off.

- Maya, thank you.
- Thank you very much.

All right, designers, it's hard for me,

but I'm going to leave you for the night.

These fabrics are so pretty.

I like the way you lay,

like, slanty right here.

You have a great shoulder line.

exactly where I want them to.

You're a big part of my inspiration.

I identify with pale people.

I am expressing air in my garment.

I'm just worried that the judges
will think I'm being too literal...

...but my interpretation
isn't necessarily air.

It's actually laughter.

And then I'll do a skirt
on top of all that.

My model fitting with Monique
is going amazingly.

She fit my bodice beautifully

and we're working on the skirt.

Oh, it's so pretty.

I'm enjoying the spirit
of the competition now.

Ben's look is a great idea.

I can tell that he had a great direction,

but the trousers are just awful

and are not doing anything
for the model's crotch.

These are a little off center.

This is the first time
that I've done pants,

and it's a little nerve-racking.

Alison's staying positive,

and that's all I can ask for right now

because I don't need
any more pressure.

in there, it would be so amazing.

My shoulders aren't super broad.

This is not a departure
for me to use darker colors,

and in case anyone didn't know,

black, not only is it beautiful,

have really taken creative liberty

with this challenge.

You know, I understand
their loose interpretation,

but there's a lot of dark,
opaque, heavy designs.

It does look like that.

I mean,
it's like smoke or steam or...

A couple people are using
gray and black

for various elements,

so it's hard to tell sometimes.

All of the designers
are in a state of panic at this point.

I feel like everybody is behind.

I spent most of the day drafting.

I'm nervous about time.

I still have a whole other sleeve
to put together,

and I have to finish the hems,

but it makes me feel a little better

that everybody else
is freaking out as much as I am.

Everyone is really pushing the envelope

and really creating huge shapes
and huge statements.

We are all scared to death

that there's no way these garments
are going to get finished.

I think I got a little ambitious.

It's been a stressful day

because for something that I thought
was going to go pretty smoothly,

it's not,

but everything's cut out,

and I have no fabric left,

and it's, like, I couldn't even start over
if I wanted to.

The whole idea of wind,

that reflected us,

really ambitious on this one

and just did things that may
or may not work for us.

Okay, let's start the show.

When I see my dress
walk down the runway,

she looks like water.

The ruffles are flowing
really beautifully.

I really imagine the siren,
this vixen of the water,

and I really tried to make
a look that spoke that,

and I'm really happy with it.

It's totally me.

My look was really strong.

It's bold. It exuded air

and just the whole idea of tornado.

And I just love the way it feels

and the way it looks and the colors.

I feel proud that I did three pieces

in a very short amount of time.

The concept was strong,

and I did have a sense of direction.

I think I stayed true to myself.

Whoo, I love the look of my dress.

Kristina comes down the runway
like a Clydesdale.

She really knows how to walk

and move in my clothes,

and that makes me so excited.

I feel really good about this look.

Everything came together
at the last minute.

I really hustled,

and I feel good about the pants.

I wanted to show them
that I can work with texture

and that I can work with less contrasting
elements in my design.

My final product
is absolutely breathtaking.

If you look under "romance"
in the dictionary,

you would see a picture of this look,

and Cerri looks like an angel.

I wanted this garment to give you pure joy

when you looked at this dress,

and I feel like I achieved that.

The dress comes out,

and it's not standing correctly at all.

And the hair is very messy,

but I think the concept
is very different and unique.

I actually do think the dress expressed
my voice as a designer.

It's a beautifully put together dress.

The fit is impeccable,

and most importantly,

Monique feels beautiful and strong,

so she can sell the dress.

I put down the runway
exactly what I wanted to do.

There's no second thoughts on...

Was it the right choice for me?

Are the judges going to like it?

I don't know what
they're going to think.

All I know is I love it.

and your inspiration.

My inspiration is earth.

I was inspired by rocks,
stones, minerals.

I've seen such ambitious work from you,

and suddenly you kind of threw it away

on something
that I think is very normal,

and I do see that you're continuing
this geometric thing,

but at a certain point now,

I've seen the arrows,
I've seen the bull's-eye.

It's kind of the one-trick pony.

I didn't understand this.

This is like another designer
suddenly turned up

and took over your body.

The only thing
that is really interesting is the vest.

The pants and the sweater

are just completely random pieces

that you can buy in any store.

I think you chose the wrong direction.

You should do a show piece,

and you didn't make a show piece.

That's what the catwalk is about.

Seth Aaron.

My element was air.

Every night when I stay out
in New York City,

it's beautiful to me,

so I emulated air twisting,

and on the back it's gusting.

When I think about air,

I don't automatically think
about black leather,

but what you've done
in one day is astonishing.

Thank you so much.

She came out,
and I thought that she had

such a great look, top to toe.

And I just designed
with emotion for this,

so I'm happy with it.

You are very true to yourself,

and when we see something,

it's very consistent coming from you,

and I think that's very important
for a designer.

Now, the pants. Is this boots?

No, this is a metallic denim,

and these are actually strips sewn on.

You have a new idea of trouser.
It's really interesting.

Some big designer
will be jealous of them.

That means quite a bit.

Maya, tell us about
your look and your inspiration.

My inspiration was water.

I used a stretch wool,

and I channeled a little bit
of old Hollywood glamour

with a Veronica Lake hairstyle.

I think the dress is chic.

The cowl is nice in the back.

That's a good look for a catwalk.

It's... It's to achieve, and it's personal.

- Thanks.
- Nina, what do you think?

I think this is
a perfectly beautiful dress, actually.

However, what worries about you

is that you are very referential.

It's always drawing
from another designer's point of view.

This challenge, it's Nina Ricci.

Do you see that?

Um, well, not particularly.

I mean, I think everything that I do

really represents me
as what I call my own, for sure.

But the day you put
your collection on the catwalk,

and your inspiration.

My element was water.

I wanted to go in the direction
of the wildlife that lives in the water.

The great white was the first animal

that actually came into my mind,

and I really wanted to do a suit
because I haven't done one yet.

I had no idea what it was
other than an ill-fitting suit,

and now when you explain it,

you had to put
the shark's teeth on her sleeves?

Is that supposed to tell me,
"Oh, she's a shark"?

I will say that the hair and the makeup...

I get this kind of
subliminally elegant shark out of it.

All I can think about is,

if you don't know how to make a suit,

don't make a suit.

It looks like the first suit
you've ever made.

I think this is a real mess.

It looks to me

as if she's wearing
underwear over the pants.

It's bizarre.

Come on, Ben. A jockstrap pant?

It's wacky.

Ben, you have made
in the past some beautiful clothes.

Do you think that this represents you
as a designer?

I think I bit off
more than I could chew.

and your inspiration.

Sure. I started with the element of air.

This is my idea of laughter.

Laughter is transparent,

and laughter also envelopes you.

I started with creating my own textile.

I wanted to keep it in the tones

that actually occur in Cerri naturally.

I love the fact that you played up
the model's skin tone

because she really has
beautiful skin tone.

I think it's an amazing work,
amazing draping.

I think her hair and makeup
is definitely best in show.

Cerri, what do you think
about the dress?

I was in absolute awe

of the sheer detail
that Jonathan put into it

and the fact that he took
my skin tone into consideration.

I was very, very pleased with it.

I think the one
who achieved the most is Maya.

That girl control from A to zed,

and I really like that.

The entire aesthetic was well done.

by something that is already done.

what good of a tailor he really is.

There was something beautiful
about the back of that jacket.

The color was fantastic
on her, really beautiful.

It was so poetic

the way he matched
her skin tone to that blush.

It was perfection.

Basic romantic,
and that's quite beautiful.

But, hey, I'm French.

Now let's talk about the designers
with the lowest scores.

We had a lot of...

big mistakes up there.

Like Ben, for example.

He's never made a suit.

He had no idea what he was doing,

and that jockstrap trouser,
I mean, come on.

And then you pointed out
the little shark's teeth,

which I had not noticed.

That k*lled me.

- He's been a good designer.
- Mm-hm.

So this is definitely
very odd for him to do.

Let's move on to Amy.

This was weird.

She picked something
that was, quite frankly,

more ambitious than she
really knew how to achieve.

She just got stuck with her concept,

and she ended up with a mess,
a really weird looking mess.

It's almost like she's trying too hard.

Okay, let's move on to Mila.

- This was super boring.

Oh, my God, that was kind of Mila
designing an outfit for a ball walk.

You know, what is worse, then?

Someone like Amy,

who is trying to step outside the box,

or someone who is doing
a drag suit, basically,

to go to the mall in?

This challenge was like,

"I can't do my geometry architectural
whites and black.

Oops, what am I going to do now?"

So does this mean that unless
it's crisp black and white,

she's totally lost?

I mean, she might be.
I'm not sure, but she might be.
