This weekend, we're going on an Outward Bound...excursion.
[Jon] We're all kind of excited
that we're getting away and doing something fun.
Everybody started screaming
that we're going on a camping trip.
I thought, great, because I've always wanted to go camping
but I've never been camping in my life
so I really don't know what to expect.
The dude from Outward Bound's coming at O'clock.
[Tami] 'Oh, he's coming at nine.'
[doorbell ringing]

The trip is pretty much gonna be..
...uh, a hiking trip and a rock-climbing trip.

So will we actually see coyotes and other..
We might, if we're lucky we might.
Tami and Beth will probably have the biggest problem on the trip
because, I mean, they had a problem with
uh, bonding themselves to nature.
Tons of rodents, you know, mice, rabbits, you know.
[Aaron] 'Oh, God!'

I'm just hoping nothing comes up to me
nothing comes near me
'cause I would totally freak.
And there are, obviously, no bathrooms.
There are no bathrooms.
We're gonna give you toilet paper
but, you have to pack it out, you've got to carry it.
- Sweet. - In a plastic bag.
You can't bury it.
Um, you use the bathroom, you do what you have to do you
and you have to put it in a plastic
and you have to keep it with you for the duration.
- That's right. - Okay.

It's just, I've never..

Cheryl is definitely a nice girl, attractive.

All we see is big rocks in front of us.
[Aaron] 'It's O'clock and we haven't eaten breakfast yet.'

where it opens up, that we're looking for?

[Steve] 'You guys wanna see where we are?'

[Dominic] 'It's a pointless, and I think it's a dangerous exercise.'
[Tami] 'I hate camping!'
[Dominic] I asked several times, "What are we doing?
What exactly is going on, where are we going?"

This is what was pissing me off.
As soon as we get over the hill, it's just more of the same.
[Tami] Our guide, Cheryl, did not know where she was taking us.
We were pretty lost at that point.
We got questions like, "how far till we get there?"
[Dominic] 'We're, like, minutes away, correct?'
Well, what is there? Where you guys wanna get to?
[Beth] Aaron was doing a much better job than Cheryl was doing.
[Cheryl] 'You've been doin' great.'
Your navigation skills are great
but...I need a little less attitude, okay ?
- Okay. - That'd be great, thank you.
[Beth] So, we all started, you know, following Aaron
and she got really mad.
[Cheryl] 'How about we sit down and...make a circle?'
[Steve] 'You guys need to make a choice right now.'

What you want out of this course.
'Cause you guys are pissin' right now.
[Aaron] 'I feel like I'm being talked to like I'm in nd grade'
'and I'm not in nd grade.'
You talk to me like I'm a little kid and I don't appreciate that.
[Jon] This was actually the first time
I can recall that we all really stuck together.
You know, it's kind of like with brothers and sisters.
You don't get along with them, but, you know
if somebody messes with them
you'll, you'll get together.
This bit about sitting around in a circle..
...to me, I'm sorry, I see as horse ♪♪♪.
You're speaking to a woman who's an LA marshal.
[Dominic] I don't think there was one happy person.
Everyone was disappointed or upset over something.
Trapped, I mean, it's like being locked
in an elevator, sometimes.
Stuck in-between floors and you don't know
when you're gonna get out.
[Steve] 'Camp is this way on an angle, about O'clock.'
We're gonna hit a wash, you know, probably a mile.
[Jon] Steve, our guide, made the analogy of
you know, this a w*r.
And if this was a w*r
you couldn't just stop or you'd die.
You know, we didn't like to think of it in that way.
[Dominic] We set up camp in what was a dry wash
which is a river bed that has the possibility
of becoming a river, I believe, if it starts raining.
[Aaron] We need volunteers for cooks tonight
and we need volunteers for breakfast cooks in the morning.
[Beth] I thought, I'll cook dinner
because there's no way I wanna wake up early
and cook breakfast.
[Jon] 'Hey Beth, last time you made instant rice'
you burned the rice and ruined our pot.
This is a brand new pot
she'd better not do that with this one.
I may offer a recommendation, anyone who's gonna do this
when they tell you, "Don't worry about food
we're gonna take care of it."
They're lying. Worry about food.
I did not fart and then try to act like I didn't
while everyone's going, "Dang, what's that smell?"
We lived on trail mix for two days.
It makes you fart like a gas oven.
It's Saturday night, Aaron.
'And we're just happy to have water'
'and some dehydrated chicken soup.'
Pseudo-dehydrated chicken
it's not even real dehydrated chicken soup.
[Aaron] 'Isn't it amazing, like, after a day hiking'
'like, how good this looks?'
[Beth] Steve was just overly excited about everything.
He was like, "Oh, great, this food is gonna be so good!"
[Steve] 'Will anyone eat any chicken'
'with their burritos or anything?'
[Beth] "I'm gonna make beans!"
You just eat it like that?
- Yeah! - Are you serious? Ugh!
[Beth] "Mmm, I love this food"
and...gosh, he was just...he was crazy.
Could we serve this stuff while it's hot ?
[Dominic] I swear to God, I know what it's like
you see them prison movies and they serve up slop
and you say, "How can they eat that?"
You know after you've been eating gorp
or trail mix for hours
you'll eat this kind of stuff.
[Dominic] 'Did someone say sleep?'
'Sleep, time to sleep? Sounds good to me.'
[Aaron] 'We're the only two hardcore'
real outdoorsmen, sleeping out in the outdoors.
- Hey, ladies? - 'Yeah?'
- Are you guys okay? - 'Yeah.'
- You warm enough? - 'Uh-huh.'
- You all tucked in? - 'Uh-huh'
No questions, no problems?
[Beth] 'Yeah, but you can watch guard of our little hut for us.'
[blowing raspberry]
[coyote howling]
[thunder rumbling]
[Dominic] I think it was : in the morning
and I didn't realize this but it started to rain.
And the rain didn't wake me up, it was Aaron
woke me up to tell me it was raining.
And I think I would have been just more than happy
to sleep through it.
Unbelievable, you know, I was sleeping perfectly.
[Beth] 'Why is everybody circling our tent all of a sudden?'
[Irene] 'Like a bunch of sharks.'
[Beth] It started raining really hard
and Aaron had come up to the tent and said, you know
"Can we come in?"
[giggling]
I told him to get away from our tent.
There was no room in there.
So, all four of the guys slept in one tent.
And the three girls slept in the other tent.
[Jon] 'Beth!'
- Get out of bed! - I wanna take a shower.
[Jon] Sometimes, I just had to laugh at them.
I mean, they laugh at me, 'cause I'm not..
I'm not really into the whole LA atmosphere
but the roles were kind of reversed this weekend.
- I want to be carried home! - Me, too.
I just sat back and thought to myself..
Cityfolk!
[Jon] 'This thing drops about feet straight down.'
'And if you were to step over that edge'
'it would be pretty much an inevitable fact'
'that life as you know it, would cease to happen.'
[shrieking]

Yep, measuring the distance
has gotta be really right on.
[Aaron] 'I'll talk to Glen? Or, or..'
'Or should Glen talk to..'
[Steve] 'Okay, let's set her down right here.'
'Get her a little more to the edge.'
- A little more to the edge ? - Yeah.
[screaming]
[Aaron] 'Don't, we don't need this, okay?'
[Steve] 'Let's tilt it just a little'
[screaming]
[Steve] This is an activity that, umm..
It's a simulated rescue.
[Irene] When we started lowering her down
I saw the bottom of her lip start to quiver.
[Cheryl] It's okay, it's all right.
[Irene] I was not gonna do it
unless Aaron was going down with me.
I really trusted him the most out of everyone.
[Steve] 'Aaron, attention, attention.'
[Irene] Her life was in basically all our hands.
And if somebody screwed up
she had no way of saving herself.
[Steve] 'Three inches of slack.'
[Tami] One part of the mountainside
was not level with the next step that they took.
And if they didn't judge correctly
they could have, they'd really dropped her
or sent her smashing into the, into this mountainside.
[Jon] 'They're getting on the ledge.'
- How're they doing? - They're fine.
[Aaron] 'Slack, very slowly, very slow slack.'
[Glen] I think it's 'cause you're putting your faith
in someone else.
And virtually putting your life
in someone else's hands.
I think it causes to become more dependent
and, put more faith in each other.
- Slack, do you see him? - No.
[Aaron] 'A little more. Perfect, slack!'
[Cheryl] 'It's good, keep on going, slack.'
Perfect. They touched the ground.
- They did? - Yeah, they're on the ground.

when we were out there and they're all good people.

when I was walking down the trail by myself
