It's not that I hate it out here

'cause I do, I really have enjoyed it.

But it's nothing I can change my lifestyle to

[Mike] 'Hi, is Jon Brennan available?'

This is Jon Brennan.

[Mike] 'Hi, Jon, it's Mike Elliot.'

'I'm a film producer here in Los Angeles'

'and I heard the country music, uh'

'talent contest out in Malibu.'

Hmm, yes.

'And, um, we're makin' a picture called, um, "Slow Burn"'

'and the star of it is a country-western singer.'

[Jon] 'Oh, really?'

[Mike] 'I wanted to call and find out if you were available.'

Sure, I don't really have anything going.

[Mike] 'We'd like to meet you, basically.'

''Cause we need to make a decision this week.'

[Jon] 'There's a couple of problems on that'

because I'm leaving for Kentucky tomorrow at : a.m.

[Mike] 'Um, since you're leaving town tomorrow'

'I guess we'd have to meet today.'

Okay, that's, that's perfect.

It was like boom, all of a sudden, you know. Boo-yah.

Five minutes, and here I was

off to see somebody about a movie.

Yes, Jon Brennan is here to see Mike.

- Hi, Jon? - 'Yeah, I'm Jon.'

I'm Mike Elliot, nice to meet you.

This is Dan Golden, the director.

- Hi, how are you? - Nice to meet you.

Thanks for coming in on such short notice.

Oh, sure.

[instrumental music]

I haven't told you the story

about what this is about yet.

'There's a small town in the middle of the desert'

'and the bar there is run by a beautiful young woman.'

'She lives with an older man, they're married.'

One day, a, uh, tall, handsome stranger, you..

'...walks into town and asks for a job'

'doing work around the place.'

Uh, he picks up his guitar and starts playing

and every head in the place turns.

'And over the course of the next few weeks'

'the bar becomes very popular.'

Eventually, your character starts to have an affair

with the, with the bar's owner's wife.

And you're really the reason that the bar is popular

you're-you're gonna k*ll the husband.

[Jon] I don't know, I guess it's a cross between

a Clint Eastwood movie and a, and a pervert type role.

My vision for this thing is to approach it with film noir

film noir in the dessert.

Crazy. I mean, it's so off the wall.

You know, I'd love to give it a shot.

But I mean, uh..

- I'm not sure I-I am an actor. - 'Right.'

Singer, I-I could probably handle.

We haven't even heard your music at this point.

- So we.. - 'Right, yeah.'

Let's at least start with that and just..

[guitar playing]

[Jon] What do I think about the movie?

This movie deal, I don't know.

I mean, no offense, but me of all people, you know..

I mean, we-we'll do it whatever we need to do basically.

We will call you on Monday or give us a call on Monday.

Oh, goodness.

'Okay, thanks a lot. Appreciate it.'

- 'Nice to meet you, Dan.' - 'Thank you.'

This is cool, Jon.

- 'Is it?' - Yeah.

First ten weeks I was here, I wasn't doing jack and now..

[telephone ringing]

Hey, Jon.

There's a chick in here, Darlene, huh?

I don't make mad, angry love.

Well, what kind of love does Jon make?

Jon got a movie role.

Aaron and I laughed about it.

[Dominic] 'J-B. Come on, man.'

We wanna sit in your company, movie star.

I can say one thing to actors, the best thing to do to get work

is to sit around the house, watch TNN.

Eat pizza down the street

and, uh, somebody will call you someday.

De Niro called while you were in the shower.

I wasn't really sure what I was getting into in the first place

so I haven't made any commitments yet.

I got some time to think it over.

[Irene] 'You're not kissing any woman.'

- Why not? - 'I don't think--'

[Irene] 'So, when you, when will you fly down?'

Uh, when I get back.

Got a four hour plane ride tomorrow.

Going back to Kentucky and I'm gonna be reading the script.

Seeing what exactly it is

that I am gonna be doing, right?

[alarm buzzing]

[Tami] 'Jon, I'm gonna miss you.'

I'm gonna miss you, too.

- But you know what-- - I got up at :.

Did I tell how much I appreciate you getting me up

and getting me up and taking me?

What time is it again?

[instrumental music]

[Jon] I'm really looking forward

to seein' my family to go in a church on Sunday.

I am also looking very much forward to performing

at Goldie's, something you do every Friday and Saturday night

for two years really made me realize how good I had it.

What's up, boys?

By far the most difficult thing living here

is just the fact that no one else here is a student.

People don't know where I go during the day.

I mean, they know I go to school

but they don't know what that means.

That's why I kind of showed them around the campus

showed them where, my some of the classes where.

It's almost like a show and tell for me to show them

what I do at school.

I remember when I was at UCLA first I just felt like..

This was something that was so overwhelming.

Thirty eight thousand people go there both undergrad and grad.

It takes a lot of time to get used to.

I'm taking him surfing at Huntington on Friday.

You are? Well, I'm gonna be down there, Friday.

[Dominic] He really enjoys it.

He'd always seems to be known on campus.

It just seems like a, it's like this big club

like a social club, almost.

And they have classes in between to socializing.

[Jon's mother] 'Jon, do you see wild hair-do's?'

Do you see people with orange hair and spiked?

No, just Dominic.

'There's the Dommer.'

Well, he didn't have a fear of heights.

[Jon] At the beginning, I don't think

I would have missed my roommates at all.

At the same time, you know, I kind of feel like I have

some one of connection in L.A. now.

I knew that this weekend was gonna be a time

when I could just try to experience home

'cause I knew that my time was limited here

and there's just no time to do it all.

Owensboro is considered the barbeque capital of the world.

It was a good weekend for me to comeback

'cause I get to see everybody and it's an exciting time.

- How are you? - Good to see you big..

[Jon] I am a totally different person in Owensboro.

- You got a balloon, too? - Yeah.

- Where'd you get 'em at? - I don't know.

[Jon] I-I have so much more confidence here.

I guess I'm kinda big fish in a small pond here

and a small fish in the big pond out in L.A.

- There's Goldie. - She's on time?

[instrumental music]

[Goldie] 'We'll just kinda go over it with you real quick.'

I'm sure you know what you're doing.

[Jon] Goldie, she is a great friend.

Goldie is been singing in Owensboro

ever since she was little.

She wanted to give other people that opportunity

so, she eventually she opened her own place.

There's a lot of things that I wouldn't have done

had she not open the doors for me.

Well, I think we got about , minutes, total..

We are real excited about our special guest.

So, if you will, please welcome my pride and joy

[crowd cheering]

The thing is, you know what?

I'm not a whole lot different than you are.

See, last year this time I was in school.

You know what?

Your parents stand by you through everything.

My dad's here today.

[crowd cheering]

I wasn't sure and I'm still not sure

that I can achieve my dreams

but I'm gonna try

and I believe in myself.

I think you can achieve your dreams.

I believe in you, so..

And right now, there ain't nothing wrong with where I am.

I guess I didn't make great grades when I was in school.

I didn't see the point in, in studying your butt off.

I never liked it to tell you the truth.

I guess I really didn't have faith in myself

until I got encouragement from Goldie and everybody else.

And put confidence in me.

Dropping out of school or college that is

you know, it's just, it's just

a totally different atmosphere.

Uh, UCLA, you know, where Aaron goes to school everyday

there's, there's nothing like that here.

How about if it maintains my existing job skills?

[Aaron] This class is a graduate school class.

The teacher I have is extremely hard

it's very cut-throat.

And I like that, I mean, I enjoy the-the competition.

[Dominic] I don't like to be a c*ck person, but it..

It seemed all common sense they were teaching.

I-I could've done this.

I mean, I would seriously consider school again.

It was very enjoyable.

I found it quite easy to go back to school.

You know, I probably couldn't find any good reason to leave

except there's no bars in campus.

[Jon] 'Hulk Hogan was working out at the Gold's Gym in Venice'

yesterday with Brutus Beefcake.

And I didn't go.

'Cause I was meeting with a movie guy.

I'm really curious

if, if they're really gonna choose me for that.

I'm not ready to change my life from the Bible belt

Kentucky, Tennessee to the California lifestyle.

And, and there might be that fear that

if I get too involved in California

I either might be forced to stay there

or there might be a part of me that actually

will start to want to stay there.

This trip home has kinda focused

on my performance at Goldie's.

Obviously, it's gonna be energetic

it's gonna be fun.

you look out the window and you see your mom

and your family's in there waving goodbye to you.

And you're looking down at everything.

And I was just like, "Man, why am I leaving?"

When I got into L.A., it was, like, kinda like

culture shock all over again.

It took me, took me a few minutes

to get re-adjusted, you know.

Okay, I'm back in L.A., you know

people going all over the place in a crazy world.

I read the script on the airplane

but it's just not for me.

It was not an audition for me. Acting.

'It was an.. I guess he wanted to hear me singing.'

But would he be interested in my acting?

I would think that, that would be kind of important, yeah.

I'm not gonna do it for money.

Because if I do it for the money

that's the wrong reasons.

Jon, a $, for two months work, can you do it?

No.

- Quarter of a million? - 'No.'

No way would you do it for quarter of a million dollars?

- 'No. No.' - You're lying.

Quarter of a million dollars you could use

to feed so many hungry people.

Give it to your church.

Build a new church in Owensboro.

- The Jon Brennan church. - Hmm.

With your name engraved in stone.

He was kind of moping a little because the producer

didn't call him back yesterday.

[Aaron] 'There you are, Dom. See, like that?'

The breaker furthest out, that's called "the outside."

[Dominic] Aaron asked me if I want to go surfing.

And I always wanted to try it.

Sometimes Dominic has this c*ck air about him

like he knows what's, he's doing.

And he really doesn't have a clue at all.

I have scuba-dived.

I think I'll look pretty good in a wetsuit.

[Aaron] 'You're putting my wetsuit on backwards.'

How do you steer?

Don't worry about that right now.

All you wanna do is survive right now.

[Dominic] It was a disaster, it was a fiasco.

I couldn't even get out into the water.

[Aaron] I think it was hilarious, I kinda sat next to him

and just watched him just getting drilled.

His face is bright red.

[Dominic] And, of course, his teaching lesson lasted for five minutes.

Not even, I could've drowned.

A lifeguard came up and parked his car on the beach.

He thought someone was drowning.

It was me surfing.

There were some great swimsuits down there.

Terrific.

It made up for one miserable surfing.

Nothin' like a good day of surfin', really.

Any news on the movie?

I call 'em and they, they're always like

"Well, he's in a meeting." or "He's not available."

So I guess he just doesn't wanna talk to me.

[telephone ringing]
