02x19 - Beth Puts the Smackdown in Paint...

This is gonna be fun tonight.

I got him, I burned him, I burned him bad.

Losing my father was probably the hardest thing

that I went through in my life.

I'm trying to get away from my ex-boyfriend.

I have no clue what Glen's problem is with me.

She's a mess.

[Beth S.] 'I'm being ridiculous'

telling me that you're gonna k*ll yourself

Okay, what am I supposed to think?

[man on phone] 'Look, I don't wanna talk over the phone'

'I just wanna see you in person.'

'Nothing's gonna happen.'

I just don't think it's a good idea that I see you in person.

'Oh man, don't, don't, don't do this.'

'Then I'll be up all night, okay?'

Well..

'Just, look, man, give me the benefit of doubt.'

'After three freakin' years, you know--'

How many times have I given you

the benefit of the doubt, though?

- 'Beth, can we have breakfast?' - How many times?

[sighs]

I have things to do tomorrow.

I-I, I really don't think

that it's a good idea that I see you.

I'm not dating my ex-boyfriend.

But I do still care about him.

And I care about what happens to him.

So it's kind of hard for me..

...not to be there as a friend.

I think you need to get yourself help and I think you need

to get on with your life. That's what I think.

'But, Beth, I still would like to see you. Okay?'

I think that after you get help

and do whatever you have to do

then maybe we can talk, but I just don't..

I don't think it's right if we talk right now.

'Why are you being like this?'

'I mean, you're being totally cold to me..'

[Beth] 'It doesn't matter.'

'Wait a second, you, I mean'

'you're not even telling me any of the--'

I really have to go, I've been talking to you for too long.

And it's just not right that we talk, okay?

- 'Listen, Beth.' - You gotta let go of me.

[Beth] 'You have to let go of me.'

Let-let me go. Just forget about me.

[Jon] 'Hey, Beth, I gotta use the phone.'

[Beth] 'My roommate's gotta use the phone.'

- 'Beth, Beth, whoa.' - Goodbye.

[Jon] 'Beth, he's never gonna leave you alone'

if you keep talking to him for an hour like that.

He's gonna keep calling back like that every single day.

It's just a part of my life that I would like

to forget about and move on.

[Jon] I tried to understand Beth.

I-I think she's, she's been going through

some harder times than, than most of us realize.

I know she's been involved in an a*usive relationship

in the past and it's something

somebody she cares about, still.

He wants to meet me for breakfast.

I think you ought to really analyze what would happen

if you continued to be around this guy.

If he calls, and you don't want to talk to him

don't talk to him, but--

'Cause I'm afraid he's gonna do something.

I mean, he's obviously a-a total nutcase.

I heard him on the phone.

I don't ever want to be in a relationship with him again.

But I care about him, and I care about what happens to him.

- And it's just hard for me.. - I understand.

My mom wouldn't talk to me

for the longest time because of this.

Why, because you were involved with him?

The phone rings. My mom.

- "I'm coming tomorrow." - Oh, really?

- I'm like, "Oh, great." - 'Your mom's comin' tomorrow?'

Yes.

The Polish voice in Cleveland.

[Beth] My mom is, uh, a local celebrity.

My mother is "The Polish voice of Cleveland."

[Udeana] This is Udeana Stolarczyk.

Golden voice of the Polish radio program over station

W-E-R-E in Cleveland, Ohio.

[accordion music]

- No? - No.

If we buy two, then it will be less.

How about, how about for both?

So you have more expensive taste.

[Beth] It was just...nice spending time together.

Because when she's at home, she's like, all stressed out.

And she's runnin' here, and then she's running

to this meeting, and running to that banquet and..

I mean, she's nonstop.

[Jon] Beth's mom hadn't been here five minutes

and she looks down at the carpet and says

"I feel sick, I need to sit down."

And then she starts vacuuming.

[Udeana] 'I-I-I don't know whose dishes are over there in the sink.'

- 'They're everybody's.' - Everybody's?

[Jon] 'Yeah.'

So what, maid will come and, and wash them

or what is the situation?

Uh-uh, yeah, well, they just kind of sit there

for a couple of weeks, actually.

[Udeana] 'For a couple weeks?'

'You have enough dishes'

'that they can lay for a couple weeks?'

Yeah.

[Udeana] 'That's the new generation.'

[chuckling] Unfortunately.

[Beth] She cooked for half the day.

And you know, she did the mom things

that I hardly ever get.

And that-that I really appreciated.

The chicken is great.

So I hear you are "The Polish voice of Cleveland."

Is that true?

Which radio station?

W-E-R-E, and W-C-P-N, Cleveland Public Radio.

Is it, is it ill*gal to like, say Polish jokes where you live?

[chuckling]

I was just wondering.

Then I will not cook for you, my dear friend.

[laughing]

[Jon] We were eating dinner.

Beth and, and her mom and I went out to dinner one night.

And we were sitting there talking.

Do you miss Beth because she's out here so far away?

No. I am too busy to miss anybody.

We really, I mean, when I'm home

we really don't do anything.

[Udeana] 'But it's not like, uh'

you desperately wants, want to do anything...with me.

- How do you know that? - No.

Because you like to go with your friends.

Well, I like to go out with my friends, but, I mean

it would be nice if, you know, once in a while

we could do stuff together.

Like what?

I don't know, just spending time together.

[Udeana] 'We don't enjoy the same things.'

'Like going to see the same movie.'

You will pick different and I will pick different.

[Beth] 'Mom.'

That's true.

Did I bring up a sticky conversation?

[both chuckling]

No, I'm just..

...stating a point that..

...we don't do anything together.

No, we don't.

- At all. - But this is not my choice.

I ask you all the time when I'm home.

"Do you want to do something?" "No, no, no, no.

"I have to do this, I have to do this

"I have to run here, I have to run there.

- I have to do this." - 'That's true.'

Which is fine and you're busy but, I just..

I don't know.

I would like to spend some time with her.

And it just seems that every time that I attempt to

she kind of blows it off.

She really cares a lot about working

and, and doing things, I mean..

I mean, even on Christmas, you know, she's got to do her

her radio shows on Christmas.

I mean, so it's like, it's never, it's never-ending.

She will always put, put work first.

I am very busy because, Elizabeth

someone has to make money

so, to pay for all your, for all your high-class living.

And you know, you don't have father.

So everything falls on mother.

[Beth] I know.

It's sometimes, not you, what you want to do..

...than what you have to do.

[Jon] It's kind of a little bit sad

that you know, Beth's in her s now

and doesn't really know her mom that well.

[Beth] We didn't really have the, uh typical

mother-daughter relationship.

We really didn't have the, the, the whole

nurturing thing going on.

You know, I love my mother very much.

It's just hard to communicate

because...no..

I don't think anybody really taught my mother

how to express her feelings.

And, uh..

So that's, that's what the problem is.

Maybe I don't know how to express my feelings.

I think I do though. I think I do.

Beth seems so selfish to me.

It goes in one, one ear and right out the other one.

I thought Glen and I were getting along okay.

I've tried with Beth and I'm beginning to hate her.

Her freaky friend brought a dog over

that crapped all over the place. Who brings dogs over?

What the hell, why did you bring your dog?

I really don't think it concerns you, Glen.

It does concern me. I'm walking around in this [beep].

[laughing]

[Beth] 'No, you didn't, I cleaned it up.'

No, you did not, I'll show it to you.

I threw a carpet over it.

Well, then show it to me, I'll clean it up. Calm down.

I'm glad you guys don't have any problems. Christ!

[Jon] 'Can't we all just get along?'

That's because Glen has no life

and he has nothing better to do

than get mad about [beep], that's why.

I have a great life, b*tch.

- 'Glen, shut up, okay.' - No, no.

I know it was the other guy's dog that [beep] on the floor.

- 'You don't know who [beep].' - I know it was his dog.

- 'Nobody asked you.' - I know, I saw it!

Well, I said I would clean it up!

[Aaron] 'Oh, that's classic. You should get used to it.'

[Beth] Man, I was so mad.

I wasso mad.

A lot of people were complaining about Beth in the house.

And they were getting frustrated with her.

I never did anything to Glen.

I never did anything to anybody.

It just amazes me, how..

You know, "I'm pissed. Let's take it out on Beth."

Huh!

[mellow music]

[Jon] 'Beth.'

- What? - What's wrong?

- Nothin'. - Huh?

Nothin'.

[Jon] 'Don't take anything Glen says seriously.'

Because he's not worth it.

He's so messed up in the head.

He can't even talk to someone without screaming.

And...and don't worry about what Dom and A-Aaron have said

because..

they'll say whatever they want to when they're together.

[Beth] 'No, I know that.'

- 'So what's wrong?' - Nothin'.

[Jon] I've been sick and tired of everybody picking on Beth.

I think she gets it unnecessarily from, from Glen.

Aaron, I don't know..

I really don't know w-where Aaron's coming from.

I think we really need to sit down

and iron out all this crap with her.

- 'With who?' - Beth.

What is it that y'all can't stand about her so much?

Jon, you're full of it.

We should try to understand Beth

before we, before we jump on her case.

Beth's psycho, man, she's psycho.

[Jon] Who does Aaron think he is, telling Beth

she's, she's a maniac and a complete psycho-crazy?

And-and you can't talk to Aaron about this.

'Cause Beth's tried to talk it over with him.

I've tried to talk it over with him.

And he proves my point.

"If you have a problem, I'm totally willing to speak

to you about it." I said that to her upstairs.

[Jon] 'You have a problem communicating.'

'You're willing to have a one-sided conversation'

which is what you do half the time, Aaron.

You don't talk to people. You don't talk to people, Aaron.

You-you give your opinion and if they don't agree

with your opinion, then, then they're wrong.

You pull this. Did I say that I'm perfect?

Is that what I said?

[Jon] 'You just need to chill as far as Beth goes.'

'That's what I'm telling you.'

'The times that I've seen Beth'

'try to work things out with you'

you totally slam her, you don't let her have a word in.

[Aaron] 'Example, a good example would be perfect. I'd like..'

An example would be perfect?

How about the night you blew up with her down at the kitchen?

Exhibit A, I am not lying.

Think about it, Beth, just think about it, be smart.

- I'm not gonna say anything. - Did I say that?

You-you have a one-sided conversation

and if people don't agree with you, then they're wrong.

[Beth] You know, I love my mother very much.

I know that she loves me and it was nice

for her to see what I was doing.

Because she really didn't understand what I was doing.

It was nice to, to spend some time with her.

I don't know if anything is gonna change.

It probably won't.

I'm really secure in myself.

And I know I don't have to please anybody

and I know that I have to make myself happy

but for some reason, I just keep thinking

that I just want my mother to be proud of me.

[instrumental music]

[Jon] Her mom has been a very

important person in Beth's life.

I found out a lot about Beth through her mom.

[Beth] No, I don't think we really know each other that well.

My mother does the best that she knows how to

and that's okay with me.

[plane engine droning]

[instrumental music]

[Beth] How, how should I come and talk to you

'about things that are goin' on in my life?'

How can I actually feel like I could come and talk--

If I wouldn't, if I wouldn't have confronted you tonight

and said, "Listen, let's just get this crap out

on the table and get it over with."

'Cause I don't like to live with someone in the house

and walk by, walk by my roommate and not even say hello to them.

I was talking to Jon yesterday and I said

"I'm not gonna say anything to him.

I'm just gonna ignore the whole situation because--"

Is it just me that you have a problem with?

- Yeah. - No, I don't think so.

You don't have a problem with Glen, at all?

It's kinda like, it's kinda like

he's, uh...he has nothing going on in his life.

So he wants to create some drama

and be mad at me, too or something. I don't know.

I realize, I mean, like I said

you live with someone, you're not going to necessarily

be best friends with everyone, but I don't think..

I mean...I apologize for all the things

that I did in the past that have upset you.

But, I mean, if you communicate to me and tell me, you know..

If you're upset, I mean, about, like

your old boyfriend or something at home

you can tell me, I mean, I think, I, we've spoke before.

[Beth] 'The thing that's bothering me is that...you know'

you're, you're going around and saying, you know

"Beth is such an idiot, she's a psycho."

I just really don't feel that, that, uh

that you respect me. That's my whole problem.

Just because I'm different..

...and just because I might, and just because I might react

to things differently than, than you do

doesn't mean that it's wrong.

That'smyproblem. I'm obviously very hard-headed.

I'm obviously very aggressive when I argue. I know that.

So I mean, that's something I need to work on

to be more compassionate.

'Look at this, i-it's so ridiculous.'

'We're living in this million-dollar house'

and we're acting like little kids.

I think we should all totally just enjoy this place

'and try and have a good time.'

Alright, well, um, seriously, I'm really glad that we talked.

- Friends. - Just don't..

[Beth] I just really would like it

if all of us could just get along.

[Beth A.] Beth, to me, is someone who's, who's growing

as far as her individual strength goes.

She needs to be able to have more experience

of, of standing up for herself

separating herself from her mother

and from her family, from, from, uh

her past relationships and begin

a, a new path of strength.

I was telling Beth today, I was telling her

"I think I'm actually gonna kinda miss you

even though you drive me nuts."

I said, "You're the only person who drags my butt out

to do these dumb things I would never do."

And I always end up enjoying them

and having a good time, you know.

[Beth. S] 'We could like kick each other up on the roof.'

'I'll be knocking Glen's block off.'

[Beth A.] 'Come on, Beth, get off the old path.'

Yeah, you wanna see what a b*tch I could be, huh?

[grunts]

[Beth S.] It's pretty sad if we're gonna be at each other's throats.'

Especially with this Glen thing

I can't even believe..

...how petty he's being.

[Beth A.] With Glen, I've told Beth, "Stand up for yourself.

"Don't, don't take this bull from anybody.

"You do not deserve this as a, as a human being.

"As a woman.

"When he starts, turn your back.

"Don't say a word to him.

"Don't egg him on, don't provoke him.

"Don't let him insult you in that way.

Do not let him put you down."

I believe that you have to wait

for the right time to talk to somebody.

Um, there hasn't been that time.

Um, I thought things were alright

and I was forgiving her for, like, everything else

like all these other dim-witted things

she's done in the past.

I was walking over to my car

and I saw Glen and his friend, Aileen.

And she called me over to say hi.

And I told him, "You know, Glen, I don't understand

"why you and I just can't communicate

and try and work this out."

I'm not saying, "Let's be best friends."

I'm saying, "Let's be nice to each other."

You don't have to get along with everybody.

[Beth] 'No, you don't have to get along with everybody.'

I think it would be different

if I was doing something to personally attack you.

Or if I was doing somethingtoyou.

I'm not doing anythingtoyou.

I want to be nice to you and I want you to be nice to me.

That's all I'm asking.

I've been dealing with this stuff my whole life.

I came from a huge family, man.

And everybody has their own personalities.

It's something you'd think I'd be good at by now.

But all I did was learn how to put up a defense

so I don't have to deal with it anymore.

Like, the few times I hung out with you, I mean

I had no problem with you and I'm thinking

"What is Glen's deal?"

'I weren't mean, I don't mean harm to anybody.'

It's just at times, I don't know how to..

You know, I get very temperamental and..

So, I've just gotta try a little harder.

I'm glad you said something.

You guys just have to, like, overcome some natural barriers.

Whether it stems from childhood or whatever.

You guys have to, like, break down your walls.

[Glen] 'It's like that with everybody. I mean..'

Yeah. You know, I know that.

But that's part of growing up and learning.

[plane engine droning]

[Jon] Aaron mentioned that his fraternity always goes

and plays paintball, which is, you know

you sh**t at one another with g*ns filled with little

ba*ls of paint that splatter when they hit you.

Paintball was a blast.

[growling]

[Beth S.] I thought that paintball was a lot of fun.

It was a good way to, to, to get out some of that

tension and stress that was building up.

Just, uh, you know, "Gosh, I could sh**t Aaron, today.

I could sh**t the hell out of Glen, today."

It was just a good feeling.

[Beth A.] You're being very physical.

You're running around, you're screaming.

You're impaling somebody with paint ba*ls

that you are angry at, you know.

You could get off on that.

A lot easier than punching someone.

Or having to talk to them.

[Tami] I loved paintball.

It's such an adrenaline rush, you would not believe.

And we were just getting into it on that level.

We weren't trying to hurt anybody

or, you know, do anything like that.

And it was so much fun.

[instrumental music]

'Beth S., she was very aggressive for a change.'

[Beth] If we had anything to say..

[popping]

That's all we had to do.
