I was in girls who code,

Girls the tools to create apps

And programs and websites, to

Reduce the gender gap in

Computer science.

So I created this app, which is

Called "say something," and it

Gives new yorkers the

Opportunity to help homeless

Individuals.

This is such a good idea.

It's really empowering just

Being able to create something.

I know how that feels.

I mean, I get empowered every

Time I create a new garment.

For the print, I want to play on

The binary code so that you're

Not gonna know until you're

Close up, kind of like an app.

Looking at it like this, you

Would never know how much code

Is behind that.

That's cool.

Doesn't that sound fun?

I was about 12 years old.

Seen it on tv for the first

Time, and I was like, "that's

What I want to do."

But I use everything around me

To express myself.

Um, if I see a handrail or a

Stair set or a ledge or a car...

He's an innovator in his

Field and has followers

Worldwide at 25 years old,

And he has got a lot of passion.

I want to capture some of that

And bring it into this textile.

I was thinking of maybe, like,

Cityscape in an abstract way.

That's sick too.

Like, I always think about if I

Had, like, a picture from just a

Bird's eye view of me in the

City, like, blasting through,

It'd just be like this one,

Continuous line.

Awesome.

That sounds awesome, dude.

Um, so, are you wondering

Where you are?

I am, I am.

This is barbalu.

It was a restaurant completely

Destroyed by hurricane sandy.

Oh, wow.

I have been working with them

To rebuild.

You can see here, there are

Gonna be renderings of what

It's gonna look like.

That's beautiful.

Isn't it, really? Yeah.

No, it's really beautiful.

I'm really drawn towards the

Brick walls that have been fixed

With cement and have been

Painted over.

It'll translate really well into

A print.

Oftentimes, there are small

Businesses or entrepreneurs...

Um, and they have a passion,

A plan, but they just lack a

Little bit of capital, and you

Can crowdfund your loan on

You tell your story, and people

From around the world chip in

I brought some photos along.

Here's maria in guatemala.

She is part of a women's

Collective that basically does

Indigenous designs, and what

They're making is so colorful

And vibrant, and that's

Something that I see all over

The planet when I visit kiva

Entrepreneurs.

This is, like, right up my

Alley.

Like, the color and--this is,

Like, so me.

I just feel so inspired by

How many people this has

Reached, and I'm just really

Excited to translate all these

Different people from so many

Different places into my

Textile.

Photography and abstract

Expressionism, so I paint first,

Then print, then paint.

Yeah, my--both of my parents

Are artists.

That's how they met.

So, what we're gonna do today

Is take a photo of you and then

Print it right on top of what we

Paint.

What? That's awesome.

Both of my parents have painted

Since the day I can remember, so

That had, like, a heavy

Influence on why I did design.

I mean, they put me through

School, and they've helped me

With any sort of fashion

Endeavor, and I just--i really

Want to succeed to prove to them

That I am serious about my

Career choice.

Is it finished?

Yep.

To have this experience, to bond

With another artist that just

Has that same mentality that

I grew up around, was really

Inspirational, but, you know, I

Never work with prints, so I'm--

I'm a little nervous about this

Challenge.

Oversee all the dessert, um,

Programs.

That's great.

But I also do, like,

Specialty cakes and crazy cakes,

Exploding cakes, spinning cakes,

Lit-up cakes, so...

It's been good.

I'm very nervous, mixing

Pastries and clothing.

I mean, especially coming from

A costume designer, I could turn

That and make it really scary.

But, obviously, you're gonna

Work on some cake.

You're gonna make cake today.

I'm racking my brain on

Inspiration.

How do I get back int--at least

To the top three?

How do I actually win a

But, honestly, I'm not that

Inspired by cakes.

That's not my style, is to do

Cake-like things.

Project runway hp challenge,

Where we get to use the new hp

Rove to design a custom print.

But there is a twist this

Season.

We get to be inspired by a young

Innovator.

He gave me all these, like,

Really cool pictures of, like,

The people he's helped.

And then, like, you can get your

Money back that you give them,

And you can give it to someone

Else.

So we're back at the

Workroom, and we're all

Basically doing show and tell...

She's not what I expected.

A typical miss america.

Pageant.

And I brought home a cake,

But it melted, 'cause it's...





Welcome back, everyone.

There is an hp envy rove at

Each of your workstations.

It is on this that you will be

Creating your textile design.

So, after you create your

Textile design, it's going to

Dyenamix to be produced.

All right, I will be back in an

Oh, my god, I need this when

I get home.

I don't really have a

Complete direction I'm going.

I think, at this point, my real

Influence is the chocolate

Lacing on top of the cake,

Just the shape of, like, the

Little, tiny, delicate ribbons

Creating a latticework, that's

Really burned in my head at the

Moment.

I'm trying to make tiny

Little dots.

I want to take binary code and

Use that to create a floral

Pattern so that, from far away,

It just looks like a normal

Floral print, but that, close

Up, you look at it and it's

Binary code.

I am sketching out the design

For "I love you" in sign

Language, which is this.

It's relating back to how loving

Nana is.

It's abstract enough that people

Don't know it's saying, "I love

You," but it still has that

Integrated into the print.

I used rectangles to emulate

Bricks.

The part of the bricks that I

Liked the most was whitewashed,

So I tried to emulate that, and

Then add some graphic lines

Along it.

The line of nigel running

Through the city on his bicycle

Has dispersed down into mostly

Horizontal and vertical lines.

I think the energy's there.

I'm using this bright pop of

Blue color to sort of represent

Nigel's freedom, energy

Through the city, and I think

It's gonna be great.

Like, too much color.

But I have to tell you, now

That I see it with the sleeves,

I don't want to see it without

Them.

A little stronger.

I like it, but then I'm a

Little nervous too about it.

Either all the work goes into

The vest, or all the work goes

Into this top.

It can't go into both.

There was all that delicate

Chocolate latticework.

So I brought that delicate kind

And created kind of a fan.

Since I'm bringing some of the

White in, I'm kind of doing a

Little futuristic kind of

Silhouette.

It's looking very clerical.

Which I kind of don't mind.

Um, well, my inspirational,

Uh, muse was premal, who founded
a website called kiva.

It allows entrepreneurs from

Around the globe to crowdsource
money as a small loan to help

Their business, and I really
love that the internet was

Bringing people together as

Opposed to apart.

So I played around with the
ideas of interconnecting lines,

And I just did a really basic,

Simple, bold graphic print that
was me.

This dress is runway ready.

Color, you love prints.

I love the hair, the makeup,

The three little dots underneath

The eye.

I think there's something very

Tribal about it, but it feels

Costumey, so there's just

This general sense of a sort of

Sophistication about it.

Uh, for my print, my

Inspiration is nana, miss usa.

And one of the things that I

Noticed about her is her love

For life and love for people,

So I wanted to incorporate,

Sign language, "I love you."

I love that you put that

Into your print, but for me

That was about it, what I liked

In your look.

To me, it looks like you spent

All your time on the corset part

Of the dress, you know, and then

You kind of ran out of time, and

You just slapped this piece of

Fabric onto the bottom.

Okay.

I wish you would have made

This a shorter dress.

Right now, from the waist up,

She looks fabulous and sexy.

From the waist down, it's just

Very drab.

It really does look like the

Bottom half of the dress is

Super depressed.

Unfortunately, I had a very

Hard time with it as well.

And I really wish the print had

Continued onto the dress, 'cause

There's nothing more beautiful

Than seeing a print dance.

My print was inspired by

Nigel sylvester,

A world-recognized bmx rider.

And he said he had a dream one

Time of a bird's-eye view of the

City, and the black and white

Is sort of the black and white

Of new york, and the blue,

Electric lines running through

Are his bicycle zipping all

Over the city.

I like your print a lot.

A dolman sleeve, and I wanted to

To bring in some of that crisp

And fresh from the cake.

When I think about cake and the

Possibilities about cake, you

Know, you can go wild on the

Colors.

I do feel that the print that

You designed is not really

Showing me cake.

I think the cut of the dress

Is very good, but there's

Nothing sweet and sexy about

How it works with the white

And the print.

I think it's almost like

Two different recipes came

Together, because the silhouette

Is nice, but the fabric just

Feels very stiff.

I kind of like the print.

Those squares--almost looks

Like a patchwork and could have

Made for a fabulous design.

However, I think that she's so

Covered that it's almost like

When you overindulge in

Chocolate cake.

There's something very serious

About it, when it should have

Been light.

My muse was an artist.

He uses a large-format canvas

On a high-resolution printer.

And it made me think, all right,

I want to do something that's

Kind of layered and just

Make a really cool graphic

Print that kind of, you know,

Spoke for myself but was still--

I do actually like this

Print.

You know, for me, it looks a

Little patriotic.

I like a little bit of the

Midriff.

It's sexy but not slutty.

It's still sophisticated.

I think it's pretty clear,

When it came down the runway,

That it was in one and you split

Yeah.

But I sort of think that made

It.

I think if it had been just one

Piece, it would have been a

Little dull.

Codes in a computer.

I like the way it turned out.

I am overwhelmed by the pleats.

That's five panels too many.

It's almost like if I asked

This girl to turn around, she

Would spin out of here.

I felt like, based on your

Explanation, you had a real

Golden opportunity to give us

A print that felt strong, but

I didn't even notice the print

Because of, well, the pleats.

She looks like she fell into a

Kleenex box.

There's so much wrong with

This outfit.

I don't find the blue masculine

At all.

It's very baby blue.
