[Jacinda] If you're gonna do modeling full-time

you have to be prepared to travel all the time.

From until now, I'm , I've been traveling.

I've got just sort of like a growth on me vocal box.

As a singer, my job has been

put on the line by this operation.

[Mike] My job over here is to race a damn car.

I just don't know what to do.

[Kat] This is the true story..

[Neil] Of seven strangers..

Seven strangers..

[Jacinda] Picked to live in a house..

[Jay] And have their lives taped..

[Lars] To find out what happens..

[Mike] When people stop being polite..

[Sharon] And start getting real.

[Jacinda] I've just seen so much of the world through modeling

and had an incredible time

the experiences and things I've done.

I do it because it's a fantastic opportunity

to travel and make great money.

But more and more, doing modeling

isn't really what I love to do.

- Oh, that looks wonderful. - 'It looks very good.'

- Ah! - 'Well done.'

[Jay] Jacinda, you know, she's got

these pictures and she's top model.

I would have never have guessed it.

- What happened? What'd you do? - I had an accident.

Jacinda is so far from my type of anything.

You know, 'cause you see her and she's into clothes

that they don't really match as far as I can tell.

♪ The most beautiful woman alive ♪

So I can understand if you were struggling

to get by with money

for a good reason, for a good cause.

'But to struggle to get by to do, to do modeling'

to me, it's just not worth it.

Like, I remember, like, in Milan

we used to live at these residence and there were, like

models in it, they were starving.

'They do this stuff called Dancing For Dollars.'

To be the beautiful thing that sits at the bar and dances.

They'd have to go and get people up out of the audience

and, like, these gross, old, like, Italian men

and dance with them and, uh..

If you don't have a chance to do it well

don't do it all because..

...it'll just suck you up.

Storm's a really good agency here in London.

They represent a lot of the best girls.

It's swimwear. It's dresses.

If you can bring in the tear sheets that we're missing--

I've got copies, actually.

I'll just bring you in

the already done copies.

If there's any castings that you can go

to tomorrow, we'll send you out on those.

[Jacinda] I have to do castings and you go to see the clients.

If the clients don't know you're there, you don't work.

- 'Hello.' - 'Kaylie Hunt on .'

It's really hard sometimes.

If one day you come in and you're not exactly the way

they might think is right for you to go on castings

then they're gonna be worried

that, that's the way you're gonna be.

Hi, we've got one of our really brilliant girls, Jacinda Barrett

that needs to come in and just have a chat

'with one of your top stylists'

about what to do with her hair.

'What you should do, you should get your color done.'

Modeling might focus on my looks

but I don't feel I have to live up to anybody's expectations.

Yeah, but it's, it's two incompatible things.

You can either be funky and be young or

you know, carry on making money, and doing well.

Well, what you should do, check in at o'clock tonight anyway.

So get it all, bring it in and we'll put it in there.

And you'll come in after that, won't you?

- Yeah. - Aye, aye, captain.

I would advise you to put a lot of very blond-tinted

highlights into it, but not to do the whole head

not to tint it all over.

Let me arrange for someone to come out

and talk to you about your haircut.

I don't really care. Hair's not a big deal.

Clothes aren't a big deal.

I understand, you know, I just want to cut the length, yeah.

The most important thing for me in my life

is finding my own little, little piece of peace

in this world 'cause it's hard.

I really could not be bothered to, like, constantly keep

my hair trimmed, to constantly keep my nails

done, you know what I mean?

[Jacinda] 'Yeah, Sharon, look at the way I'm dressed.'

'Okay, look at the way I'm dressed. Look, look.'

[Sharon] 'You have a student look.'

Yeah, but you've never worn anything, like, this sloppy.

Now look, this is totally washed out.

[Jacinda] 'Before I leave, you're gonna own a pair of jeans'

with tomato stains on it because--

Is that your-your effort to convert me?

We're gonna play a game.

I love dress up!

- Jacinda. - Ooh!

I can't believe it!

[Sharon] I'm gonna get a job as a waitress.

Keep the money ticking over.

And, um, I noticed this little bar

literally around the corner from our house

called The Mas Cafe.

- So what's your name? - Sharon Gitau.

- Full-time, part-time? - Part-time ideally.

You thinking of some three shifts or something a week?

- Three or four. Yeah. - Three or four?

But y-you have, where else have you worked before?

So right, okay, so, um, I've done silver service

but I haven't, like, worked in a restaurant

that kind of thing, I mean, I haven't done.

Do you want, do you want to do a training shift?

I'd like to, yes, please.

- : till : on Sunday. - Alright then.

- Ian will be here on Sunday. - Alright.

- Okay? - Okay.

- Thanks very much. - Alright, okay.

Kat, it's me.

She's got me in for a practicing shift.

Um, on Sunday brunch between : and :.

It was so quick and easy.

So you guys will have to come in and have a meal.

When you have nothing to do with your life, you just

especially me, anyway, I just kind of totally stop.

I mean, I just veg.

When you have a job, it gives you

some purpose and direction

a reason for getting up in the morning.

We're kind of like the night group

and they're kind of like the day group.

And they just, they're awake during their similar time

and we're awake during similar times.

Everyone else go to bed?

Oh, yeah.

Well, what are you doing tomorrow?

Um..

'If it's nice out, I'll go for a rollerblade'

'for a while in the park.'

- 'Um..' - Alright, I'll go with you.

'Okay.'

'Some reason those fish like the left side of that tank.'

Is Heinzmade over here?

- 'How bored are you?' - Yes, I am bored.

[Jay] Once I have a reason to get up early

then maybe that'll start pushing my schedules back.

But right now, I'm not doing anything anyway.

Oh.

[chuckling]

[screaming]

The crowd's going wild!

[alarm ringing]

- 'You heard Mike last night?' - Oh, yeah.

I had to get up at :

and he was screaming 'cause he got a goal in.

I could've k*lled him last night.

I thought he would've been screaming

'if I had woken him up at : this morning.'

Everybody heard you, the whole house heard you.

Even Lars heard you and he sleeps like a log.

I apologize for waking you up that one time.

'How many times have you woken me up?'

The night crew are people who aren't doing anything

so they sleep during the day

and stay up really late into the night.

Captain Caveman!

Mike is the dish king or the dish daddy.

[Mike] 'How about smegma?'

- Sharon is now smegma. - It's smegma actually.

Guys, guys, guys, guys, guys.

When we go to bed, you guys have to please be quiet.

'You guys scream.'

Alright, we'll just swap rooms then.

- You guys want to swap rooms? - 'That is..'

Well, then,shut up!

♪ So try to get some sleep ♪

We need nicknames now for everyone.

Straight Up b*tch would be perfect.

[phone rings]

- 'Hello.' - 'Is Mike there?'

[Jacinda] 'Mike!'

- 'Mike's sleeping.' - 'Long distance for him.'

Well, he's sleeping.

Mike?

'I'm trying to get him. Apparently, he's sleeping.'

I don't know why, it's o'clock in the afternoon.

- I'm gonna get it. - 'Mike, Mike, Mike!'

I got it!

[male #] 'Man, is she one obnoxious woman?'

You don't live with her, dude.

[male #] 'ba*ls of fun, let me tell you.'

[Jacinda] Kat and I are actually the only two right now

who are working or having any kind of schedule.

Four other people in the house aren't even really working yet

so it kind of got to be a bit of a problem.

[phone rings]

- 'Hello, Storm.' - Hi, it's Jacinda.

[female #] 'Yeah, I got some casting for some shows.'

'They start casting for shows quite early.'

'We've got casting for "The Margaret Howard" show'

'"The Paul Smith" show.'

Casting is like going for a, a job interview.

You don't particularly enjoy them.

They're just a must-do as part of the job.

[female #] 'Yes, but they don't hold the charts.'

I had cards in here.

Alright, and it goes straight ahead, but bit to the right

and then it'll run into Victorian Bank.

[male #] 'Can you just walk for us? If you'd take your jacket off?'

In Paris, I did Gaultier.

In Milan, I did Armani

Missoni and Dolce-Gabbana.

- Lovely. Thanks, Jacinda. - 'Thanks.'

Can I see this one on you, Jacinda?

What shoe size are you?

They need that and they need The Hailey, the short dress.

'Everything about this dress is perfect.'

'It looks like she's always had it on.'

[Jacinda] Usually you don't know what the castings are, I mean

or what you'd have to do until you get there.

So what we're gonna do vaguely.

Just a group of young people hanging out

where they're having fun and the more ice cream you make

the more you feel like having fun.

And I've got some rock and roll music.

- I get it. - But I mean, just happy fun.

Ice cream movements.

- What's that? - You know.

Just laughing around with friends. Okay?

Just announce yourself to camera, please.

Hi, I'm Jacinda.

[female #] 'So I'll just put the music on'

'and off you go, just very happy.'

Oh, baby, are you gonna come dance with me?

- 'No, I'm not.' - Come on, this is not fair.

No, this is ridiculous.

I just saw this and thought, My God, this is not worth.

This, this is just ridiculous.

- Is that enough? - Okay.

Could you bear just a little bit more movement?

'We wanna get you the job, don't we? Off you go.'

It's totally fake, you know.

You're smiling and selling clothes.

And you know, it's so, it's ridiculous.

- 'Rollerblades came.' - 'Oh, seriously?

- 'Yeah.' - Oh-h*, baby.

You're gonna see some old rollerblades.

These are the old Lightnings, man.

Yes.

Oh, some magazines too.

There's someone from my class

named a Rhodes Scholar, in my high school.

Stuff like that makes me feel so brilliant.

This girl I sat with

like, every day for, in the beginning of the school.

And then you go to the back page, it says

"Mike is a junior, h-has just now become a junior

hangs out, drinks a lot of beer and is pretty worthless."

I hate that student magazine. It just makes me feel stupid.

[chuckles]

I wanna be doing something, you know.

♪ Had a bad day ♪

[Mike] I don't know what I wanna do job-wise.

Hopefully, racing will spawn something big.

I don't do much of the freestyle stuff.

I've just been playing hockey forever.

Where, in the park? In Hyde Park?

'Uh, no, just back in The States.'

- Alright. - 'I'm from St. Louis.'

Went to a rollerblade shop the other day

and asked them if they, uh, give lessons and they said yes.

And I go, would it be possible for me to instruct?

You'll have to speak to Anton about it, but we just ask you

'to, you know, promote us as well.'

- Oh, of course. - So it's Tim's number.

He's one of our instructors.

- Okay, I have that card. - You've got that one?

- Yeah? - You wanna give him a ring.

Just you know, introduce yourself

and say that you're gonna be giving some lessons

and, uh, you'd like to go out for a skate with him

and see if you're alright and everything. I'm sure you are.

Alright, well, uh, I'll bring these back some time

and, and thank you very much.

- Nice meeting you, guys. - 'Okay. It's alright, cheers.'

I might have found myself a job.

Just something to do with my time

until the racing season starts, so that might be cool.

[Sharon] 'I'm gonna be a little waitress!'

I'm quite excited about it actually.

So, is it, is it a good place?

I mean, the people that I've seen going in there

like, kind of, like, an up crowd, chatty.

You know what, I mean, she said, um, well--

[Lars] 'Chatty? Well, that's your type of crowd.'

- Oh, no! - 'Now isn't it?'

- 'Well, good luck.' - See you later.

'Okay, goodbye.'

[Mike] 'You're quitting already?'

I've had my brush with waitressing.

'Believe me, I was like a headless chicken.'

[Sharon] I just had a day as a waitress.

That job is absolutely hellish.

I mean, the money is really bad.

And it was just like, bang, the whole place was full

within about ten, fifteen minutes.

If they were gonna pay a better wage I'm sure I'd stick with it

'cause I didn't dislike it. I had a good day, but it was hard.

Are you, like, are you saying you quit today?

New people coming in, you had to seat them

and some people didn't wanna be near people that smoked

and just total chaos, total chaos reigned.

I can't really imagine a job like that

really being good for your well-being.

[Jacinda] I had a casting today.

So if you'd like to change and just leave your tights on.

Okay, could you do a slow walk halfway

and do a turn for us, please?

- Where, down here? - 'Just down there.'

If you're running around and doing casting

and stuff, it's just horrible.

You don't get paid to do castings

and it really has to take first priority

if you have to do modeling full-time

because it's always irregular hours

and they can call you up any time.

I'm like, uh, look, I don't really feel

comfortable in this and a lady comes in.

She goes, "Look, I just want you to know

if that's your attitude, we wouldn't book you for the show."

And I said, "Uh, thanks, that's okay."

- I didn't wanna do it anyway. - Oh, jeez.

And then, so that was it.

Do you get in trouble with your agency

when you do things like that?

[phone ringing]

- 'Jacinda, honey.' - Yeah?

- 'Hi. Hi. - 'Hi.'

[female #] 'We have to talk about how this is all working'

''cause I-I'm not really happy with the way things are going.'

'I personally think you should be going on eight go-sees a day'

'plus castings and really get your act together here.'

'Do it for two weeks and then you wait and see what comes up.'

'It's very disruptive, I mean, you know'

'we're very professional and we want you to work.'

It just takes so much out of you.

I don't see the point in it.

I'm not really that interested in it anymore.

♪ Sometimes I don't know if I'm here ♪♪

- 'Hello, this is Mike.' - 'Hi, Mike, how are you?'

[Mike] 'I'm good, are you gonna be ready for your lesson soon?'

- 'I've never done this before.' - Never done it before? Okay.

Then we would, uh, walkover to Hyde Park.

I would, I would suggest renting some, uh, some pads also.

You're not scared to fall and it's easier to learn.

- See you then. Bye-bye. - 'See you then. Bye-bye.'

The working dude.

I've got my lesson today.

Be the first person in this house that makes money.

This is a hockey stick, Neil.

- I guessed that much. - Okay.

I've seen it in "Wayne's World."

Okay, okay, yeah, same kind of thing.

- Don't have a puck as well? - No, I don't have a puck.

So what do you do with it?

Oh, no!

- Uh-oh, we're fine, we're fine. - Oh, I'm falling.

- You alright? - Yeah.

Do you feel comfortable going straight like this?

Yeah, I can't brake very well.

Try to put your hands on your knees

to get you to bend over.

This seems to be working better.

You're doing so well.

'Just work on your overall balance'

and turn a little bit back and forth.

Uh-huh.

Thanks so much for giving me a half a day class with you.

Half day?

I get to skate around the park

and someone new to talk to

and I'm making a whole lot of money doing it.

- Okay, thank you. - Thank you very much.

On windows and mirrors

get no steam or condensation of any kind.

'Demonstrate its suction power.'

You will do all your silks and your garments

in your hotels, in your homes.

Personally, I go for comfort and, and, and efficiency.

And I-I-I use the pop-up tent.

Shall I demonstrate that? Have you seen that?

Whoo, oh, I only got one side. Oh, well.

My second job.

There's a family friend and she has a store

to do with, uh, tan-through products

swimsuits, visors, umbrellas, tents, all this kind of thing.

Believe me, I burn, I burn like hell.

The reason I use it, actually.

When they come on the market eventually

in the better kitchen stores..

Watch, no reason to sweep, no need to vacuum.

I enjoy conversation, I enjoy meeting people

so this is kind of a really cool job for me to have.

A salesperson, um

has to come to a point and Sharon doesn't.

Oh, very nice, you're going to Disneyland

or something. Oh, wow!

I think Sharon would make a fantastic salesperson.

I mean, first of all, you wouldn't escape her.

It's a little steep, but when you think

of the function and the benefits

you've got to think of your skin and it's really important

because of the ozone layer depleting.

It's a lot more harmful when the rays get to you

and everybody's worried about skin cancer.

I guess when you look at me pitching

I seem surprisingly knowledgeable.

The skin around the eyes is the most sensitive skin on the body.

But that is the art of blagging, really.

I think most salesmen probably haven't got a clue.

Guys have to put on the visors because they're a bit sporty.

Products especially designed to protect you

from the UVA, it reflects.

- Ten minutes in the sun-- - I dig this color.

I know, I loved the pink too. They were wild.

Oh, I'm awfully sorry.

'Would you like to be talked to about this wondrous product?'

[Jacinda] I was talking to the people in the house

and they wanted to see my agency.

Neil, Mike, Kat.

Oh, there we are, she's on the, Jacinda's on the expensive--

[Neil] 'And boys are all the same price.'

I was, like, working non-stop

right up until I came to London.

- Yeah, you'd like her. - I would.

So when I got here

it was like the treadmill just kept going

and I did not wanna be going on castings.

I did not wanna be working and it showed.

The lady that does all the men, so she's really nice too.

But it's a fantastic way to make money and travel

and I'd never put that down because that's fantastic.

Check out Roy, that's pretty impressive-looking.

'Roy's got some eyebrows, that's for sure.'

- 'Leave my boys alone!' - We like Roy though.

[female #] 'You're not bad-looking, actually.'

- 'Bob Marley..' - Really?

You could do a job for us, actually.

We need some school boys, yeah.

- 'For some school boys?' - Yeah.

[Jacinda] 'He's getting pink in the face!'

[laughs]

- 'Would you do it?' - Yes, I'd love to.

[female #] 'Alright, can I take some Polaroids of you?'

Okay.

You probably set the whole thing up

just to screw with my head.

[Jacinda] 'No, no, I swear.'

I swear to you, I didn't, Mike.

Even if you just got one job

it'd be so much money.

- It's over for sure. - Really?

I went from Mike the race car to Mike the male model

because first of all, I haven't been

Mike the race car driver yet.

[Jacinda] 'Have you noticed this handsome young man?'

- 'He's a model.' - He's a model?

[Jacinda] Isn't he beautiful?'

[Jacinda] A good day at work is when you're producing

something really fantastic.

- 'Jacinda?' - Yeah.

- Forty one. - In shoes.

[Jacinda] You have to have a good stylist

good hair and make-up, good photographer

and a good model and you have to put it

all together and if that all works out

you end up getting something fantastic.

Yes. Put the arms out. Tat's it, good!

♪ Big time sensuality ♪

'Yes, that's good, that's good!'

Brilliant, beautiful. More that way, Jacinda.

More front to me. Excellent!

When everything's going good it's great.

Not only are you having a great time while you're doing it

you know, it's your job.

And it's the most incredible job

for a young person to do.

You look gorgeous.

Would you take me out if I'm dressed like this now?

'Absolutely. No one's as lovely as Jacinda.'

Yes! Chin up more. That's beautiful.

'Superb, beautiful.'

'Yes, yes.'

'Yeah.'

'Good.'

Jacinda?

Just very strong shapes just towards me.

'Okay, like that, that is beautiful.'

If you can do really well in modeling as a career

there's no way you should contemplate not doing it.

I would never, ever swap those five years for anything else.

That's good.

It's not so bad after all

when you look at it from that perspective.

Right there. Good, Jacinda, good.

[female narrator] On the next "Real World.."

It's a scary thing to sit down and try to write.

[indistinct singing]

Neil kind of reached over to the guy and then all we saw

was a tumble and a smack to the ground.

[clamoring]

[Kat] 'He needs an ambulance.'

I think it's pretty bad.

- Hello? - 'Hi, Mike.'

- Hello, how are you? - 'I'm alright, and you?'

- Look at you. - Will you excuse me?

- 'Um, I've spoken to Greg.' - Okay.

- 'And he said no.' - Okay.

[female #] 'Um, it's the height that's the problem.'

- The height? - 'Yeah.'

- It's okay. - 'So I'm sorry on that.'

- Ask her if she thinks.. - 'Sorry, love.'

[female #] 'If we get something and then, you know'

'we've got the Polaroids, we'll give you a call.'

Okay, Jacinda was suggesting to me to try..

Do you think I should go somewhere else for the--

[female #] 'You can do it, but your height will always be a problem.'

- My height, okay. - 'Alright, then.'

- Thanks a lot. - 'Bye, Mike.'
