[Jay] And have their lives taped..
[Lars] To find out what happens..
[Mike] When people stop being polite..
[Sharon] And start getting real.

[Lars] I had pretty mixed feelings about
going on a weekend trip with my flatmates.
[barking]
Mitchy! Treats!
Personally, I was, like, really excited
when we found out we were gonna go on this trip together.
Yum, yum, yum, yum.
[Kat] We were pretty excited
but I don't think anyone was too jazzed
about spending the whole weekend together.
Ooh, what's this cute little bus here?
[Lars] We didn't know where we were going before we left.
We all assumed we were going up North.
Just think.. Outside, wilderness, cold.

[Jay] We got on a train, we still didn't know
exactly where we were going and, like, five hours later..
[Neil] 'Jay.'
[Lars] 'Just leave him maybe.'
We stepped out of the train station
somewhere in wherever, I had no idea where we were.
- Hi there, I'm Richard. - Neil.
Neil, pleased to meet you, Neil.
Hi there, I'm Richard.
- Hi, I'm Jacinda. - Jacinda.
[Kat] There's this really, really happy-looking guy
with an "Outward Bound" on a van.
It's like they dump you in the middle of the wilderness
you have to figure out how to get out on your own.
- You're joking, aren't you? - No.
- You're joking. - No.
[Jacinda] I don't know, I guess we're all a bit shocked
'cause, I mean, none of us
have any idea what we're in store for.
My name's Richard, and I'm from the Outward Bound
Mountain School at Ulswater.
We're mountain climbing.
[horn blares]
Hey, Sharon, did you remember your hair dryer?
Ha-ha-ha!
[Kat] 'I just had to tease you, I'm sorry, I snapped.'
I'm just bored with the teasing.
Oh no, we're going to be looking bad.
[Jacinda] Sharon's just the type of person
that is so easy to make fun of.
And we're all like, we all take advantage of that.
[Richard] 'It's gonna be a challenge weekend'
'and team-bonding weekend.'
[Lars] Team-bonding weekend!
We already had enough of that on the train.
[Sharon] 'Oh, there's a lake!'
[Jacinda mocking] Oh, oh, oh!
[Sharon] Oh, Jacinda, chill out. I am allowed to appreciate.
Look at that, you can't say that isn't just beautiful.
[shouting excitedly]
Oh, look, there's my sheep!
[Jacinda] 'Go get him, Lars.'

Like I say, it's down to be a fun weekend.
'That's the main element of it.'
'And this afternoon, we're gonna kick off'
by doing the high ropes aerial course.

'What we'll do is, we'll, in a couple of minutes'
we'll move inside, okay?
I'll take you to your room, show you your room.
He said "Room."
I thought, "He said 'Room.'" No, he's not being literal.
"They couldn't really expect all seven of us
to go in one room. No, no, no."

[Lars] 'No way!'

[Richard] This is the high ropes course then.
Start climbing the ladder and make your way up.
So number one will be Jay.
And, Sharon, if you want to get ready to spot him.
You'll find as you go around the ropes course
you could find the straps on your shoulders
'do loosen up.'
'If they do, don't worry.'
[instrumental music]
[Jay] There were about four or five trees
and if you looked up you could see
all types of contraptions and boards and swinging sticks
and ropes and vines and stuff.
And as you went along you kind of just sorta
figured out where you're supposed to walk.
No, I'd say go over the left.
'Bring it, bring it around your back, Jay.'
So hook it on to this and then hook it
on to my triangle, right?
[Kat] There were safety ropes
but it didn't feel like there were safety ropes.
And it felt like you were stepping into space.
Which should I go first, foot or my hand?
Just take one step and then grab on.
You won't go anywhere.
Oh, jeez.
Lars, you could use the one over your head by, couldn't you?
[Lars] It wasn't physically difficult
it was more about fear, and overcoming that fear.
[Richard] 'Yes, well done. Well done, Lars.'
[Sharon] Everybody was like, totally, just like, acing everything.
This is like gymnastics.
[Sharon] It made me feel like, "God, I'm out of condition."
But then also, I had the additional thing of like
being afraid of heights, and nobody else had that.
Woo!
- Yes. - Yee-haw.
And then I didn't have my asthma pump
which was very stupid, so I failed that one too.
Go, go, go together. It's easier together.
Huh!
Sharon, that's the hardest part.
[laughs]
It was all in the mind, like, I was really, really scared.
I'll go right behind you
and then if I catch up, I'll help you.
Okay, Sharon, now unhook yourself from the tree
and you're ready to go.
I apologize for being such a wuss, really.
[Sharon] When you're sort of, like, in the middle of any given task
you're sort of getting a rush, 'cause it's like
"Yeah, you know, I'm doing it. It's not really all that bad."
You wanna go on to the next thing.
But then, that only lasts for two seconds
'cause you look at the next thing, it's like..
"Oh, my God" all over again, total fear.
Oh!
Jacey! Stop it!
Hey, do you think you'd land on your feet if you fell?
Oh, God, you're such a one!
[Sharon] But the more I did, about halfway through
I was kinda thinking, "Okay, I can handle this."
But then I got to this broken bridge.
[wailing]
And this was like, terrifying.
I'm thinking I'm going to die.
Oh, I'm stuck now.
Bring, bring the other hand forward, Sharon.
Oh, no. I don't like it.
You can do it.
Oh!
I'm finding this highly amusing, actually, but..
I'm just crying, because of nerves.
I can't stand heights.
Oh, I'm such a wuss from hell.

[Jay] 'There it is!'

[Jay] 'Now bring your other leg over.'

[Jacinda] I didn't mean to do that, I'm sorry.
Jacinda, being Jacinda, decided to have a bit of fun.

I really enjoyed it, when I was halfway down
when I opened my eyes, basically.
Sharon, you're the loudest jellybean I've ever heard.

Leave her there, let's go in for dinner.
That was rather fun, actually, I was so scared at first.
Alright then, the last exercise before dinner then
is a short one, because we're all very hungry.
Very quick one, very short, it's called "The Wall."

Compost, it is compost.
What we do is, we have to work together as a team
to get everybody over that wall.
[Lars] Sharon are you in? Are you doing it?
[Sharon] 'I'm helping, I'm not gonna go over myself.'
- 'Why not?' - 'You have to.'
- 'No, I don't.' - 'You can get over the wall.'
[Richard] 'I promise you, you can get over the wall.'
- No, I just-- - Sharon, just try it.
- Just try it. - Trust your team.
I trust them.
Okay, that's fine then. You can get over that wall.
Okay, when you're ready then.

Getting Sharon over the wall was quite an adventure too.
But it was fun.

I really got this rush, I was like, "Yeah!", you know.

[Jacinda] 'We're not.'

My pillow, I'm very tired.
It's almost like they're trying to push me to see
how far I'll go before..
...something gives.
Sharon, do you realize how funny you are?
Sometimes I do.
[bugle call]
Alright, breakfast starts in minutes.

[Mike] 'Can I have my breakfast in bed, please?'

We need to finish up now and move out to the front lawn.

The rafting exercise for this morning.
And what you've got to do, you've got to open the box
'look at what's inside it'
and then start to design a raft.
[Kat] We're supposed to build a raft
and then, as far as I could understand
float ourselves across the lake and back
within a certain amount of time.
If you put the four barrels in the middle
then you have no stability whatsoever.
What we do, we have one under here, one under here like this.
Then Sharon sits in this part here, where there's no planks.
- Actually what we do is-- - 'Put her in the back.'
We can bind her on with extra binding
and she can kick at the back.
[laughter]
Can we just use Sharon as the barrel?
[Lars] It's very hard to tell with Sharon.
Like she doesn't ever seem to take offense of anything.
You really have to be careful, though.
Um, to not go too far.
Could you guys get the paddle?
We have to measure it with the barrels.
You have one hour starting from now.
We had like a budget
and we had to buy barrels, logs and rope.
Work it two in a corner.
[Richard] 'Remember for every minute you take'
over your minutes, you lose pounds.
- Do we have any rope left? - Ten minutes.
Richie, bless him.
Five minutes.
He was pulling for us so much.
One minute.
Are you happy?
I'd say, obviously this one is loose and that one's loose.
I say * * * it, we're tough.
Let's go for it.
Yeah!
We were like, on budget, on schedule.
We only took three extra minutes.
[Richard] 'Okay, minutes, starts now!'
[screaming]
[Sharon] We got it in the water.
And the thing just sank, it just fell apart.
[laughs]
Okay, it's all about teamwork.
Everyone get in there and help out!
[Lars] 'Everyone get off the boat!'
[Neil] Once the thing started falling apart
it became apparent that we didn't have the skills
necessaryto build that kind of craft.
I personally wanted to continue very much.
I really wanted to do it.
I just want to succeed.
And Neil was just like, "We're not doing this."
[Neil] Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!
You want to get us together as a team
you wanna organize us
you wanna take this entire thing apart
and you wanna spend another hour rebuilding it
then fine, but I * * * don't.
We made our point, we built something, it didn't work.
Just give up.
Alright, we lose, take it apart.
It's great.
Now the object is to stay as a group, alright?
Let's just slow the pace down a bit.
[Sharon] I'm asthmatic, so I had to keep stopping
and controlling my breathing.
Neil, there are some sheep up here waiting for ya.
Just stay there till the rest of the group
catch up with you, please.
[Jay] They were just oblivious to the fact that Sharon
was just trying to struggle along and just trying to..
And Sharon was there because the rest of the group
wanted to go on a hike.
And so Sharon was saying, "I don't have an inhaler
"but I will walk along, because this is
what we all decided to do."
[Kat] Jacinda, let me get a picture of you like that.
[Sharon] I totally understand why Mike was
wanting to go up and do his own thing, and Kat too.
I mean, if I was, you know, if I had that level of fitness
I'd-I'd be there with them, you know.
Little friends, little friends
I have something important to tell you.
I've come back from the dead.
Come to the very edge of the platform.
[screams]
[Neil] If I have a fear at all, it's the fear
of mindlessly leaping into open space.
- Yes! - Yay!
I can't see the point of jumping out of a tree.
Yeah!
Neil had some half-hour long explanation
of why he didn't want to do it.
I will * * * myself, quite literally.
Neil was like, "I'm not doing this."
"Nothing anybody can say will change my mind."
Who's next? Neil or Sharon.
No, I really don't--
Sharon, just go up and once you're up--
Why are you all wanting me to do it?
Everybody's leaving Neil alone.
Because we think that you can, and we think that you will.
Neil can, he's taller than I am.
He can, but I feel like he's chosen not to, but--
I've chosen, I'm just not as strong-willed as he is.
I think that you should do it.

Around the corner, hold on to one of their ropes.

the six of us vote on kicking you out of the house.
- You wouldn't. - 'Yes, we would.'

I'm comin' down.
I didn't end up doing what the group wanted
but I did what I wanted.
This is about my personal boundaries.
Me challenging my own fears
and I haven't gotta come to anybody else's standard
'cause I know my standard.
- Come on, wussy! - Oh, oh, oh!
[Neil] The fact that these people can all g*ng up
and force somebody into a situation
they really don't want to be in, I found quite disgusting.
[Mike] 'Our word is, we don't talk to you anymore.'
At least I did my goal.
[Lars] We spent two and a half days together.
By Sunday, I was a bit fed up.
There were like little arguments here, little arguments there.
Yeah, Mike, grow up, man, grow up.
I am so cold.
Can't we do anything where we start sweating?

- Yeah. - No.
We all had a totally different place
where we were like, into going.
Why don't we do the monkey bar thing?
Well, that looks stupid.
Alright, there's an extreme lack of interest
in doing just about anything.
So I'll make your decision for you then.
Your room has to be tidy, your beds have to be stripped.
And that's your activity until lunchtime.
Decisions in this group are non-existent.
It was so intense, like the slightest
little thing could blow up.
[Sharon] I brought a magazine for going away
and Jacinda, she'd asked to borrow this magazine, I said
"Okay, but just, like, don't bend the pages."
No, you said to me.
I said, "Can I read your magazine, Sharon?"
And you said, "I'd rather you didn't."
You left it all horribly crumpled on the floor.
How * * * ridiculous over a two-pound magazine.
It just seemed so petty to me
that people can get uptight about that kind of thing.
I just wanted to get out and avoid it.
We're gonna come back in an hour
and they'll still be doing it.
Sharon bringing up that, that over
and it started over a magazine being on the floor.
I was talking about a principle.
Nowhere else in nature
do you put a pack of small animals together
without one or two getting k*lled.
[Jacinda] 'I find that so ridiculous.'
I find it ridiculous that you find that
you have a lack of respect for people's things.
Yeah, because your points are ridiculous, Sharon.
If they're chickens, they'll peck them to death.
They'll peck them till they bleed
and then they peck the bloody spots.
You're picking out situations where it's possible--
[Sharon] 'You asked for a situation.'
Don't ask for a situation and then say it's petty, Jacinda.
You're not even listening to what we're saying.
[Jacinda] 'I did, I heard everything you said.'
Then you completely denied it.
All you seem to care about is winning this argument.
Being right or wrong or principle, this and that..
That doesn't seem to interest you.
Not a single time I had ever heard Jacinda say
"Okay, you got a point there, you're right."
- 'Sharon?' - Hmm.
Does it bother you being picked on all the time?
I don't know, I'm used to it, doesn't bother me that much.
[Kat] It would bother me a great deal.
[Sharon] I wanted to say to her then, "Why do you take part?
"If you knew that you couldn't handle it yourself
then you shouldn't take part in something like that."

[Jay] It bothered me how people treated her.
You can make fun of Sharon, and she'll deny it.
People are just making fun of you, you know that?
Well, there's a truth in every joke, you know.
Uh, it can hurt to a certain extent
but, um, I just, I just keep it to myself.
It's not like, I really, I still don't know
if I can answer your question, I don't know
if I hurt or not, I'm really that bad.
I still honestly don't believe that all this stuff
doesn't have an effect on her.

One of us was supposed to give that certificate
to someone else and just give him a hug or say something.
I was to give the certificate to Sharon.
Funniest person among us.
I would like to point out at this point that
I'm actually quite, quite impressed
with the things you did and have done.
[Jacinda] 'Oh, look at Sharon!'

Well, there's no crap in Lars, and, uh..
So for Lars to just get down, and look her in the eye
and tell her that he was proud of her
I think it really touched Sharon.

to everything everybody has to say about me.
It's just a matter of deciding what I'm gonna take on
to affect me and what I'm gonna allow to sort of
maybe upset me and hurt me, and what I'm not.

She still, on a day-to-day basis, amazes me.
She honestly amazes me.

the whole thrill of-of driving at a major track.

You know, you didn't grow up anywhere near any sheep.
I spent so many drunken nights
getting pissed out my head and chasing sheep
and trying to shag them.
But the trouble is--

Yeah, you put your trousers around your ankle
then you try and chase the sheep.
And they're always a lot faster and end up on your face.
Neil, this isn't something you've done?

No, 'cause they always run away, but, you know, I've tried.
I remember there used to be like

there would be a report about an animal incident.
