[Jay] Neil gets to open it.

[Neil] I wonder who it could be from?

[Kat] 'Open it.'

[Sharon] 'Oh, my God, it's a lion.'

[Jay] We still didn't know exactly

where we were going exactly

what we were doing.

Kenya.

[shouting]

I'm going to Africa.

- Yes! - Yes!

[Kat] This is the true story..

[Neil] Of seven strangers..

Seven strangers!

[Jacinda] Picked to live in a house..

[Jay] And have their lives taped..

[Lars] To find out what happens..

[Mike] When people stop being polite..

[Sharon] And start getting real..

"The Real World," London.

[Sharon] Going on safari in Kenya

is one of my personal dreams.

Well, I think the only downside with this trip

is gonna be dealing with

Kat and Sharon's squealing every seconds

as they see another floppy, fluffy, bunny.

I'll be singings "The Circle Of Life."

[instrumental music]

[Kat] I cannot believe

that I have a chance to go to Africa.

I'm excited about going to Africa.

We're still going right?

- You can't.. - Those are for you.

Never in my life would I buy

a pair of these boots.

[Mike] I still have no idea what to expect.

Going to Africa, I haveno idea.

[Neil] I'm actually intrigued to know what's it gonna be like.

I'm not too good in the sun, apart from that

I quite fancy seeing what

that kind of environment's like.

It'll certainly make a change from central London.

[Lars] If you go to central Africa

you need to prepare yourselves.

You need a doctor to give you a couple shots.

[Sharon] 'Stop it.'

Quite...nice.

You jam them in, don't you?

[Lars] 'Mind if I scream a bit to scare Sharon?'

As long as you don't hit me, I don't mind.

[Sharon] This year I've had more needles

stuck in my body than I think

all together in my entire life.

And I can't stand needles.

I have to tell you it's one of my worst fears.

[male #] 'Relax your arm.'

[screams] Ah!

'Ah!'

Oh! Aah!

She'd be freaking out back there.

Sharon, it was terrible, it hurt so--

- I heard you screaming.. - It hurt so bad.

[Lars] Sharon thought I was in some

very serious pain in there.

Yes, she believed the whole thing.

I mean, it hurts, I mean, he can't do

anything about it, it just hurts, you know--

- Does he, does he go like.. - Yeah, he goes, "sshhk."

It's, I think it's your turn now.

'Sharon, be strong.'

Sharon, are you ready?

Yes, as I'll ever be. As the phrase goes.

'You asked us to tell you'

if we had a problem with needles, so

I have a problem with needles.

[male #] 'Are you left or right handed?'

[Sharon] 'Right.'

It doesn't hurt a bit.

'Here we go.'

That was it?

Why was Lars screaming so much?

I heard Lars cried.

Baby, I tell you

the-the gut-wrenching screams he was letting out.

I thought I was in for medieval t*rture.

And what was I dreading?

It got me more worked up listening to him.

- Lars was faking it. - And then he came out.

- With tears on his-- - Did you know that?

Uh, Lars is what?

Did you know that he faked that?

Are you serious?

He put water on his face as well?

Oh, no, are you serious about this?

H-how did you know this?

He came in here, said, "Guess what I did to Sharon?"

I can't believe he would do that!

[Lars] You would assume that after a while

she would not believe you anymore.

And it would be harder to, like, wind her up

but I take the piss out of her every day

and every day she believes me.

[instrumental music]

[shouting]

We're gonna leave.

They're coming to pick us up

in minutes to go to Kenya.

Are you packed?

None of us are here right now

because we're all in Africa.

[Jay] Well, from Nairobi we had to get into this

smaller propeller plane to take us

to this airstrip in the middle of nowhere.

Thank you, welcome aboard.

[music continues]

[Mike] We were flying, and I was looking out the window

and all you see is just grass.

Where, like, two feet above the ground

and then there's this little, like, dirt path

in the middle of nowhere.

We landed and there was nothing

just in the middle of nowhere.

And if you looked around you couldn't see no

radio tower, no little luggage carousel thing

there was nothing.

[plane whirring]

This must be the middle of..

Middle of nowhere.

My, my name is Nick Wood.

I'm a part of Sekenani camp. Um..

Oh, now, l-let me introduce Dixon Nitura.

Who's my absolute right hand man here.

'Dixon is Maasaian.'

And we'll work together with him.

Camp is about half an hour

forty minutes drive from here.

[Mike] Nick was the leader of this whole expedition.

Nick is this guy who's kind of like

this "Indiana Jones" type guy

he just kind of knows what

it's like out here in the jungle.

There's a conflict, which is kind of building up

'of the space for man and animals.'

[instrumental music]

We can turn off here to the left.

[speaking in foreign language]

Can you believe it? Oh, my Lord!

My God!

- I've seen it on pictures. - Seen it, yeah.

But never seen it right there.

[Sharon] There are certain moments in your life

when everything is just as

you would want it to be.

[Nick] 'Welcome toSekenani.'

[Sharon] Everybody felt this overriding

you know, Thanking-Your Lucky-Stars thing.

We just felt so fortunate to be here.

[instrumental music]

Ah!

She's like--

Oh, she's purring.

Isn't she beautiful?

[Lars] 'Hey, I just, I don't know.'

It's just too much. It just went..

It was just too quick, you know, I mean..

What, hours ago, hours ago

we were in London.

Blown away by all this?

We're in the middle of Africa.

'This isn't quite what I was expecting.'

I tell you one thing, I've never seen anything like it.

[intense music]

[instrumental music]

[Kat] We went climbing up this hill in the darkness

not sure where we're going

except that we were gonna watch the sun go down.

[singing in foreign language]

[Sharon] When we arrived

there were Maasai warriors, right there.

To come and see a warrior

just standing there. It was a bit of a shock.

[Neil] And to be confronted with a Maasai warrior

and who actually walks it like he talks it

and goes out and kills lions with his spears.

It's something that's just completely incredible to me.

It was such an unreal situation, it was so weird.

We sat there, on top of a hill

watching the sun go down, under a tent

drinking and, uh, talking to Maasai warriors.

I can't believe this.

You know, we're on this real watershed

everything is changing now.

This is the end of this kind of life.

These are the very last people

who are gonna live this way.

'So, you know, the-the whole..'

'They're just getting squeezed out'

'The warriors are just getting..'

'There's no real function for a warrior now.'

I mean, you-you, you seem to deeply

sympathize with these people.

'On the other side we have to face'

'the fact that your camp'

and all these camps being here is part of

the destruction, the destruction of their culture.

A.. You are absolutely right about that.

'It's a very tricky thing.'

'And I agree with you, I-I-I'

'sometimes I think, wouldn't it be great'

if we could just pack up our camp

and everybody else's camp and get out?

- 'But it's not gonna happen.' - But it's not gonna--

[Neil] 'If you're not here, there's gonna be somebody'

who's building tents.

[Nick] 'Y-yeah, exactly.'

[Neil] My immediate reaction was just horror.

I don't think there is anything that can be done.

I don't think there's a way that we can stop it happening.

[Neil] 'Right now, either I can carry on'

'being a nomadic tribesman'

'or I can go and get a Sony Walkman'

and the chances are, they're gonna go for the Sony Walkman

and everything about being

the nomadic lifestyle is just being lost.

All the changes are coming

perhaps, in another five years

to come you will not see people like this.

[Neil] There's a huge advance that's

about to hit these people.

And that saddens me but it's inevitable, unfortunately.

[Jacinda] 'But if you're sitting there'

upset about something

and upset about you being part of something.

'You don't have to be a part of that thing.'

And in this western side you knew a hint that--

No, I'm not upset with western society.

I'm just blown away by it all.

And that's what I'm saying, I mean, it's not

if I'm saying, "Oh, my God.

This is real problem for me. What should I do?"

I'm just going.. I'm blown away by this.

[Jacinda] 'I just find it strange that'

for such an intelligent man

'who studied so much and reads'

and watches the news all the time, that it..

This, now, is doing that to you.

And that all the things you read

and all the news that you've come to

along the way hasn't done it.

[Jacinda] I really saw that Neil is so

naive about so many things.

In his own field and in his own environment

Neil is a very intelligent man

y-you take him out of that

and he's like a fish out of water.

[chanting in foreign language]

[instrumental music]

Morning. This is your morning call.

- 'Morning!' - Morning, but it's cold.

- Where is Kat? - 'I don't know.'

[Sharon] 'I knew you'd be there with a cat.'

- She purrs. - 'I knew you'd find her.'

- 'Oh, it's wonderful!' - Isn't it? It's so nice.

Oh, it's beautiful out today.

[Jacinda] We went to this Maasai village

that is actually Dixon's family.

What are their huts made out of?

- Cow dung. - Really?

[Jay] We got to go to Dixon's village

to see how his people live.

It was overwhelming.

[Dixon] 'Before we go into the village'

if the young babies pass by

and you see them bowing their head

you just put your hand on top

and you just say "Sopa."

'That's a Maasai greeting.'

[speaking in foreign language]

This is a very old grandmother.

- Sopa. - Sopa.

[indistinct chatter]

This is now where the sheep

and the goats sleep during the night.

'Last week, we were having a big problem.'

Wild animals come in.

They have k*lled two goats of mine.

Just here.

'In our village today'

'there's a wedding taking place.'

'Which I think is interesting to see.'

See, how does he look like..

We were really lucky, actually, because

on the day that we went, there was a wedding taking place.

[speaking in foreign language]

It's beautiful.

[indistinct chatter]

[Neil] The ritual was that

she's being teased.

[Jacinda] All of the women were

screaming out things to her

saying "Go, you don't belong here anymore.

Go with your husband."

She was just walking along in tears.

[chattering continues]

[Nick] 'She'll go off, now she's gonna'

'go right off with the best man.'

She's gonna go right off to another village

which is about..

...take them a couple of hours

to get there walking on foot.

[Dixon] 'The mother, she was crying to herself.'

Oh, the mother's there still.

Yeah, she was crying that she

she will not see the daughter for--

- Five years. - 'Five years.'

[Mike] I just feel like I'm invading these people.

I mean, look, you're-they're just sitting

right in the face of this woman's wedding.

I just feel like I'm completely invading them.

It's just a part of their culture to completely welcome.

Yeah, I don't think it's that welcome.

I mean, maybe you're offending them twice as much

by standing back, I mean, who's to know?

These people are a bit different.

[Mike] It felt more like a freak show to me

like, we're just there to just kind of watch 'em.

[Jacinda] Mike felt really out of place.

But these people I think were just interested in us

as we were interested in them.

And if anything

we were the walking freak show there, not them.

[upbeat music]

I know what you're saying

I think it's absolutely true

you've really got this-this thing

you have to overcome but it's

a learning experience and it's good in what--

Right, right, right.

There's a-a deeper understanding of, uh..

Yeah, a lot of people think that this is the kind of

"National Geographic" archival stuff.

They don't realize that people are living here

going through the problems that you see here, uh, um..

And you-you-you go back with a better understanding.

But, you know, it is, it's customary

if we come by and there's been a party

they'll definitely give us a, uh

a taste of the Maiden's Brew.

And every single person who comes by

is expected to have a taste.

- So we-we should definitely-- - I better go have a taste then.

[Nick] 'Uh-huh.'

Not like a local pub?

No, not quite.

[Neil] I found myself sitting there

on a camel skin surrounded by

most of the village sharing a cup

of this interesting

tasting alcoholic beverage.

I like the honey in it.

[Sharon] 'That's nice, it's kind of..'

[Lars] 'Jay, are you trying some of this?'

Oh, no, not for me.

- Oh.. - Cheers.

He's turned "The Alchie."

[speaking in foreign language]

[Neil] They got to see these strange people

with stuff through their tongues

and rings through their n*pples.

[Sharon] 'Now, now, look, look, look.'

[laughing]

By the time I'd left, I wasn't

feeling as guilty as I was when I arrived.

I think we're leaving, so bye-bye.

[indistinct chatter]

Okay, let's go.

- 'Mama.' - 'It's okay, goodbye.'

It's mama, it's okay, it's okay.

- Olesere! - Olesere!

Olesere!

[Jacinda] 'You know, I've seen incredible things'

and incredible cultures and everything but

I haven't ever seen something so raw, like that.

I swear, if this, just coming here

makes it all worthwhile.

[Jacinda] For me, everything was

a complete experience

and all the places I've travelled.

I've never been somewhere like this.

[instrumental music]

[Neil] Damn it, Steve!

The animals seem to have gone.

[Nick] This place has got a lot of lions.

You can imagine with grass this tall

it's not easy to see a lion.

But there are, there are a lot of them around.

Oh, good morning.

- 'Oh!' - Hello.

[Sharon] 'Oh, my God!'

Here, kitty, kitty. Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.

[Sharon] 'Are you beautiful!'

[Sharon] The most special thing for me

was meeting that lion.

I established a rapport with

an entirely wild animal with that power.

- Go eat something! - He didn't wake up.

[Jacinda] It's insane to be so close

to such a powerful animal.

And to be able to observe him

so close in his natural habitant.

[Kat] That's just incredible.

It exceeded my expectations

which I don't think I've ever

been able to say of a place.

[instrumental music]

Look, look!

Oh, look at how many of them there are.

'Oh!'

There's an elephant up here.

[Mike] We're just driving along and there are some elephants

just walking along, it was amazing.

[music continues]

- 'Ooh, look at that.' - Oh..

[Sharon] 'Is that a rhinoceros?'

[Nick] 'There's of them in the whole Meru.'

My Lord. Hoo!

[Nick] 'Right now ther-there's just very few of them.'

'That is a fabulous one!'

I would not wanna mess with that.

Look at that.

He's a big, big boy.

[Kat] 'I can't believe our luck.'

[Jacinda] It's a really wonderful thing

'cause you're completely safe

y-you're in a place where you don't belong.

You have no protection you're just..

You're completely out of your element.

It's just incredible.

Okay, you guys, what we're gonna do..

These are the highest hills in the Meru.

It's got really spectacular view from the top.

'We'll go up, walk over the top'

'and then down the other side'

to, uh, the place

that we want to, want to make our camp.

[Sharon] 'Oh, look, Maasai!'

[Mike] 'A lot of people are showing us the way.'

- 'Oh, cool!' - 'They're also our protection.'

[Lars] The Maasai warriors came with us

primarily to protect us.

They have brave warriors.

[Nick] 'And in grass like this, you imagine'

you can just walk right up to a lion in grass like this.

We'll, uh, we'll have all these guys with us.

Yeah, you guys, just, just really really

go very, very slowly.

[Kat] They're impressive

they're very intimidating

they're very proud.

Somehow I get the feeling that

they're very, very dangerous.

I couldn't k*ll a lion.

Let's put it that way.

Thank you. Cool.

Now I can k*ll a lion.

[instrumental music]

[Jacinda] There's a gentleness there too.

Na, na! Ma!

[laughing]

[chanting in foreign language]

[Sharon] We climbed the highest hill

in the Meru and we set up a camp

so that we could s-slept out overnight.

[instrumental music]

Scout around and pick up

what firewood you can find.

And where are we stacking this?

Let's put our tents here

and the fire just downwind.

[goat bleating]

[speaking in foreign language]

[Mike] 'They're doing it right here?'

'Uh-oh!'

[Sharon] Their main diet, I guess

is blood and fat and meat.

They don't really eat much else.

And so they had to slaughter, um, a goat.

[Mike] 'Hey, Sharon, come here.'

[Jacinda] 'Kat, Kat, they're k*lling a goat.'

And me being vegetarian

obviously I wasn't comfortable with this.

Sharon was at a difficult position

because it was against Sharon's religion

to be a part of this act

of k*lling this goat.

Guess Sharon didn't want to be around for that.

[Sharon] Every single living being

on this Earth has a soul, in my mind.

Their life is of no less value than mine.

To me, it just offends me.

m*rder offends me.

[female narrator] On the next "Real World.."

She-she's down in the dark by herself

and she's scared of the dark.

Sharon's more important than the meat.

[Neil] 'There are ways that you will'

approach other people

'but to me, are offensive and arrogant.'

[Sharon] I look at myself as a very open person.

[Jay] You know, I think a lot of the truths came out

in this week here.

Can we do it, like, behind the tree?

We're gonna be sitting here singing

eating marshmallows and stuff, and campfire.

'"Au contraire, mon frere."'

[Jacinda] 'Taste it.'

- Would any of you taste it? - Huh?

Would you taste, drinking the blood?

[Lars] 'Taste, yeah. Probably.'

Would you, Jay?

I think I would, too.

Would you M-uh, Neil?

Would you taste it if they were drinking the blood?

Oh, I'd like to think I can try everything

but I don't think I could try that.
