jewel or jewels on the runway.

- My strengths aren’t gowns.
That’s not red carpet,

So i’m kind of trying
to take this challenge

As a challenge, obviously,
and then make it my own.

My choice is definitely
a huge statement piece.

It had a little bit
of edge to it.

So I think i’m excited to see
what I can come up with.

- I got to do it.
They have hearts on ’em.

My last name’s valentine.

- Alexander.

These jewels are worth
more than everything that I own,

And it’s a little intimidating
just designing

Around something like that.

- Such a modest piece.

have 30 minutes to sketch,

And then we’re going shopping
at mood.

- Something is weighing
heavily on me, and quite

Frankly, it’s kept me up
all night.

of that makes me smile.

When I presented the challenge

I realized that there was
a big void among them,

- Okay, so it’s like a elegant,
evening wear kind of--

I think i’ma go with this.

- Yeah. I decided to go
with the turquoise earrings,

And the tan
and crystal bracelet.

I definitely have
my "a" game on,

And i’m so grateful
for my second chance.

And i’m ready to just, you know,
show tim that I am the designer

That he believed in.

we are taking a field trip.

There is an incredible
exhibition

At the metropolitan museum
of art.

It’s called
"charles james: beyond fashion."

- Wow.

- He was especially famous
for extravagant evening wear.

So I want you to be exposed
to this, and not have

Your designs be fully baked
until we see that exhibition.

A charles james exhibit,
I mean, it’s amazing.

I tend to keep things
really clean and straight,

With a flowy bottom.

So, you know, just really
beautiful gown, my first gown.

It’s scary.

- Designers, you have
five minutes remaining.

- I know that I want
to do a coat.

I’m gonna do a really simple
dress,

And i’m gonna spend all my
time working on this coat.

It is this gorgeous,
red, southwest-print velvet.

It is probably the
most beautiful fabric

I have ever seen,
so it’s perfect

For this challenge, ’cause
it’s really gonna

Set me apart from everyone else.

- Sean and i’s fabric
are pretty much a clear match,

So I have a feeling
they’re gonna say,

"Whose blue is better?"

We’ll see how that turns out.

- In terms of sean and sam,
I think it’s a huge risk

That they have the same color.

- So you guys got the same
fabric, huh?

- It’s similar.

- Our challenge is to design

I am going to make
a ’50s-style sheer overdress

With, possibly
a jumpsuit underneath.

It might be too much.

But, the judges,
they love seeing something

They haven’t seen before.

I’m hoping
they appreciate the risk.

- I always make such a mess.
I love the way

That i’m manipulating
the crinkled taffeta

Around the form,
because I was really inspired

At the charles james exhibit
at how the fabric

Looked like it had just formed
naturally around the body.

I hope that the judges
see my technique in this dress.

I’ve never done,
like, a evening gown, so...

It’s gonna get the best
of me, I swear.

I’m pretty nervous.

I’ve never designed evening
wear ever in my life.

It’s never been something
that i’ve wanted to do.

I do street wear separates.

It’s very urban, cool, edgy.

I’ve never been to a gala.

I’ve never even been
to a wedding.

to play around with,

Like, stiffness and drapey.

My hard, technical skill
with my attention

To soft, delicate flowiness.

It’s not even shaped right.

By the charles james exhibit,

How he did abstract lines. So--

- I-i’ma work it out.

- This is not
a shrinking violet.

a really dramatic coat,

And then just a really simple
black dress underneath.

I’m inspired by blankets
from the northwest, so this kind

Of reminds me of what I
originally came here to do.

- Well, it definitely
has that--that vibe.

What happens to this
very large-scale pattern

Where you have to create seams
in order to construct the coat?

It’s all off by about an inch.

- What the heck am I gonna do
to fix this?

- I think they’re gonna go
for blood...

Which isn’t good.

How are you, sean?

- I’m very good, thank you.

I thought the jewelry
was very, like, almost regal.

It was very like--
- yes, royal.

- It was like the--
like the royal family jewels

Or something.
- And it’s royal blue.

This is a simple silhouette,

But I can see
all the complexities

In making it simple.

- This has more flare
coming out of the back.

Like the front has small flare,

So I goes like...and then--

- I--i have to tell you,
it’s stunning.

For me, it’s a wow moment.
It’s beautiful.

- So I envisioned more of
a structured top, which i’m

- I was thinking of possibly

- Is it just a pretty dress?
Is there something that

The judges will think is new,
innovative, wow?

- Mm-hmm.

I mean, it’s gonna be more
formfitting, and i’m liking,

Like, some of these angles.

- What neckline
is this going to have?

- I’m playing with it,
because originally,

I wanted it to be bare,
show some more skin.

- Why did that top with
the crew neck happen at all?

I’ll just be very blunt.

That’s not gonna work
with this necklace.

What’s the possibility
of the judges

Asking whether this came
out of a lava flow?

I thought that a good
truth-telling session

Was important today.

and take out the front seams.

I’m really gonna match
up the front of the coat,

And make sure
that the front is flawless.

- So this is the
bodice top, and--

- This is the first time
i’ve done it.

I have the bodice
completely done.

And it fits great, but I
definitely need to construct

The entire bottom half
of the gown,

And try to figure out
a wow factor.

- Yeah,
that should be the height.

- I’m still hand-tacking
the pieces

While it’s still on the form,
because hand sewing

Is more of a precise way
to get things to lay together.

But it’s a hell
of a lot of work.

- The only thing is here.
- Is loose.

- Like, very, like...up--

I put it on her,
and the bust cups

Aren’t fitting correctly.

So I know I have to retake it
apart again, reconstruct it.

I’m just praying that I can
get that fit correct.

- I’m pretty much done
with my coat,

And I only have my dress
pinned on the dress form.

So I hope I have enough time
tomorrow to really get it done,

And I really hope
that it fits my model,

Because she hasn’t even
tried it on yet.

And i’m realizing that I have
a lot of hand sewing left to do,

How to make the jacket work.

And I realize that i’m--
i’m committed to this.

it’s actually perfect.

It looks great on my model.

It would just be

Everything to me looks perfect.

It really does show
that I can do flowy,

The print works beautifully.

about the dress

That I have made today.

And the diamonds are sparkling.

So I created this look

The skirt could have been
a little bit shorter.

on the length.

The boob darts
are quite unfortunate,

- I think her hair
and makeup look fabulous.

But from the waist down, the
fabric is too thick and coarse.

- The choice of color
is perfect for the diamonds.

another fabric underneath.

So I settled on what I call

I kind of took a risk
and made a jumpsuit

With this overdress.

of a fabric buying mistake.

You gave us a jumpsuit,

And this coat over it.

There is something
very ethnic about this.

It played very well with
the exoticism of the necklace.

Because I loved the way
that it looked

As though the fabric
had been manipulated

In tons of ways.

- I think the front
looks better that the back.

Feel like you were
rushing the back.

- It’s tortured.

- There’s pins in it
that I can see from here,

And I also think
you chose a pretty scary fabric.

- It’s a terrible dress.

- If I were
the jewelry company,

I’d be very upset, because it
hid this amazing rubellite,

And that’s upsetting to me,
’cause it looks yummy.

- It’s been pulled up way
more than it was supposed to be.

- Yeah, but you cannot always
sort of push it down.

needs completely another dress.

- I picked the vitrine
that was the only one

That had the watch in it.

I could see myself wearing it
if I were to be able

To wear the diamonds.

I kind of wanted
to push myself in evening

Because i’ve never done anything
with a fitted bodice,

So I went on that route
with a little bit

Of draping on the sides.

- This is drab.

There’s not much to this to talk
about, so I won’t say very much.

And there’s just not a lot
of design here.
