I am delighted to introduce
you to heather northrop.

Heather is senior design manager
at american girl,

And she’s been with the brand
for 22 years.

There is to know
about american girl intimately.

And, heather, thank you so
much for letting us come.

In 1986, we launched
the american girls collection,

A line of historical characters
and inspirational stories

Which really come to life
through our dolls.

It’s through the stories
that girls really

Connect with our characters
while learning about history all

Through a girl’s perspective.

So after 28 years,
we freshened the line,

And what better way
to do that than through fashion?

- Agreed.

- And now i’m excited to
introduce our line, be forever.

- Hi, ladies.

- We have a new line
of clothing for girls

That takes inspiration
from each character’s signature

Looks and weaves them into
modern styles for girls today.

- So, designers,
for this challenge,

You will each be paired
with a be forever character.

And your model is the young lady
who’s carrying your character.

- Your character’s time period,
style, and story

Are the point of departure
for your inspiration.

You’re to create a modern
and fashionable look

For a young woman.

- We are providing you with
fabrics that match these doll

Outfits for you to use,
as well as some information

On the character,
along with their books.

- And, designers, it’s
completely up to you

Whether you use
the provided fabric or not.

We are going shopping at mood,
where you will have a budget

Of $150 there, okay?

It’s always interesting
doing something

Completely new and different.

But there’s a whole new set
of variables coming into play

With these kids.

- Emily is our last designer.

Your doll is rebecca,
and your model is caitlin.

And your be forever character,

It’s important for you to get
to know your character.

- Feel free to look around
the store and see

What american girl is all about.

- And, designers,
this is a one-day challenge,

And you will have 30 minutes
here to take

Your model’s measurements
and to sketch in the store.

- I’ve never made
kid’s clothes before.

This is gonna be interesting.

[Chuckles]

- Head off, everyone.

- Do you know the story
about rebecca?

- Oh.

- Tell me as much
as you can tell me about her.

- She doesn’t respect the fact
that she lives in a big house

With servants.

- So she pretty much
has everything for her, right?

- Yeah.

- Oh, it’s like a storybook.



I definitely have a nice time
period, a colorful time.

It’s really great to kind
of incorporate these things

Into a children’s wear
challenge.

- She does like a lot of
sentimental things, ’cause

She lost her mother.
- Mm-hmm.

- And those flowers
that she’s wearing in her hair

Was her mother’s
favorite flower.

- Hmm.

Probably the most
challenging thing

About making children’s clothing

Is that I don’t have a
relationship with any children.

I don’t know what children do.

I can’t even tell
what people’s ages are now.

They could be 5 or 15.
I don’t know.

So I don’t know what
nine-year-olds like to wear.

[Laughing] I just don’t.

- I’m super excited.

- Kaya is a
little horse-ridin’ diva.

She pretty much cares
for her sister, who’s blind.

With her having such a large
amount of responsibility,

I want to make her
a little party dress,

And I want to make a fringe vest
to go on top

With detailed stitching.

I think this would be

Good for kids.

My doll is rebecca.

She is the daughter of
jewish immigrants from russia.

Right off the bat,
i’m thinking every little girl

Loves that twirly
ballerina skirt.

I also love making sweaters
for little girls,

So I start thinking, "oh,
that would be cool to pair it

With, like,
a shrunken sweater and,

Like, play with the proportions.
Not too young, not too old."

- Designers,

an overall jumpsuit,

And then a light

I think that the lightness
and this airy feel about it

and there are all these dolls

Staring at us and little, tiny
mannequins right behind them.

It’s a little bit different
than we’re used to.

- She’s gonna watch me work.

- The kids’ bodies
are so different.

Real different from each other.
Yeah.

- It’s so weird that
there’s not really that many,

Like, darts or anything either,
because it’s, like, straight.

[Both chuckle]

- The difference in designing
for kids opposed to women

Is, their frame is smaller.
You know,

There’s not as many curves.
So this is gonna be interesting.

- To be honest,
I don’t know what i’m doing.

- We had cabbage patch.
That’s the generation i’m from,

And my mom would make
us cabbage patch ’cause

We couldn’t afford
the name brand ones.

So my mom, like, learned how to
make them and painted the faces.

- Have you done
kid’s wear before?

- Never. I’m just like,
"shrink everything."

- Yeah, just shrink everything.
Have you done kid’s wear?

- Just once or twice.

- Do you make your
daughter clothes?

- Mm-hmm.
- Cool.

Bet she has the
coolest wardrobe.

- I’m a little worried
that emily has experience

Making children’s clothing.

She has a huge advantage
in this, and this

Could be really bad
for the rest of us.

I don’t know what to do.

- I fear this will flop.

- Our challenge is to design
a modern look for

A young girl based on one
of the american girl dolls.

- I was pretty skeptical
when we first got the challenge,

But at this point,
i’m really excited.

What i’m going to do
is to create my own print

With multiple cottons.

It sounds like a lot,
but it’s gonna look really cool

When it’s all put together.

- I’m making a houndstooth
coat, and I need a dress

To go under it.

I want to create something
classy but flirty, girly,

But with my design aesthetic,
being really structured.

- I’m making a jumpsuit.
It has this ruffled peplum

On the side
and applique of elements

That remind me of sailing.

- How is everyone?

you and see how you’re doing.

- So how are you doing

- I’m doing okay, I think.
I have julie,

Who’s straight out of the ’70s.

She’s quite adventurous
and sporty,

So I wanted to do a jumpsuit.

- So I have her in this print,
and then the denim jacket’s

Out of this blue.
- It’s adorable.

- It’s gonna have kind of,
like, a cut-off jacket

Feel about it.
And the fringe--i’m unsure,

But I think it adds a little bit
of playfulness to it.

- Remove the fringe,
you’ve got it.

- Emily, i’m so happy
that you bought that knit.

It makes me smile.

- So who is your doll,
and what are you making for her?

- My doll is rebecca.

Her family is super traditional,
from russia.

- Okay.
- And I have a daughter,

And she really loves to,
like, play dress-up,

So I wanted to make her,
like, a big circle skirt,

And i’m gonna do, like,
different layers of tulle.

- Fun.

- You know, since her parents
are very proper,

She would probably need
to be more covered up,

So the sweater
seemed to make sense with it.

- My one note to you
for the fitting,

Look at the scale and
the proportion of the skirt...

- Mm-hmm.
- And see how it looks

On someone her size.

You want her to look
like a little girl...

- Yeah.
- And not like she’s playing

Who is your doll?

- I have josefina
who’s from 1824.

She has a lot
of these tiering elements

In most of her clothing, so
i’m creating tiering of these.

I’m gonna create a bunch
of these and just layer

Them over this skirt.

- Do you think
it’s gonna look too mature?

- I mean, kids now...
- I know.

If you execute those tiers
beautifully...

- Mm-hmm.

- I think you’re going
to have a look that you’ll

Be very proud of.

So my doll is caroline.
She was born in 1802.

What she wants to be the most
is to be captain

Of her own ship someday,

And I came up with this jumpsuit
with elements of sailing to it.

With this pattern, when
I look at it from a distance,

It blends in, and, you know,
it does not look like a patch

Or like a spot on top of it.
- It doesn’t?

- When I look at it, it looks
like it’s meant to be there.

- You know, I feel as though
I don’t do you a service,

Because--i’ll just be blunt.

I have serious difficulty
understanding a lot

Of your color relationships and
your proportions,

And the judges
keep loving your work.

- I feel really happy.

My technique and construction

And I feel confident
that i’m not going home.

- She looks super happy,
super comfortable.

She just sticks that pose

And it’s awesome.

I can imagine
my nieces wearing that.

I think it looks great.

I’m super confident.

- Emma is absolutely adorable.

She’s that, like, quirkiness
that the outfit needs.

That quirky printed outfit.

It actually turned out
better than I thought.

Sean, tell us about your doll
and your look.

- Julie is a doll
from the ’70s.

Her mom owns a thrift store,

So I kind of imagined
that her mom kind

Of just cut her a little vest.
And she’s got

A little jumpsuit underneath,

Which is in this almost
liberty ’70s print.

- It ain’t groovy, baby.

- I don’t think this look
is okay at all,

To be honest with you.

To me, it looks like
a mccall’s pattern book

Sew-it-yourself kind of thing,

Not for a project runway
designer.

- I didn’t hate it, really,

But the thing about the ’70s,
it was so--gray was--

The crazy colors they had,
colors no one should ever wear,

And they looked amazing.

And so I feel like maybe if you
had a little bit more fun there.

- I like the use
of the silhouette,

Which is a popular silhouette
from the ’70s, the jumpsuit,

But with bohemian chic such an
influence with girls right now,

There would have been
so many other places

That you could have gone that
would have been a lot more fun.

- Korina, tell us about your
doll inspiration and your look.

- We had josefina,
who’s from new mexico

In the 1800s.

When we were looking
at all the clothing,

I noticed that she wears
a lot of tiered skirts,

So I wanted to bring
that inspiration.

- Mavis, can you do a
spin for us?

- There’s a surprise under
these flaps, because--i saw it.

When you walked,
they were yellow.

- I thought the inspiration
from the outfit

Was a really great update.

With the little red hat, it sort
of reminded me of annie oakley.

And it was really fun.

- I really love this outfit.

I love the graphic element
of the dress

And the colors that you chose.

- Sandhya, tell us about your
american girl doll

And your look.

- My american girl doll
is caroline.

She was born in 1802.
Her father is a ship maker,

And her secret dream is to be
the captain of her own ship.

She’s going on a yacht, and it’s
like a sailing jumpsuit.

- Jessica, what do you think
about this look?

- I think this is very cute.

It’s nice and comfortable.

- You know, I think for,
like, a one-year-old,

That would be great, but not
this age range that we have,

Which is 8 to 12 years old.

Imagine a 12-year-old in that?

- Oh, no.

- How do you get into that?
Is there a zipper in the back?

Can we have a look at the back?

- Yes. There’s, like, a snap.

- I mean, even there, it looks
like a onesie for a baby,

You know, where you
change the diaper,

You just open the back.
It doesn’t look age appropriate.

- Um, i-i beg to differ,

But I appreciate your feedback.

- She looks like
a circus flamingo.

In the world we’re living in,

A nine-year-old wearing
this would feel

A little uncomfortable.

- It’s just not really
mature enough

Or cool enough or modern enough.

- Kini.

- My model is anita,
and we got samantha.

Basically, her story
is set in 1904.

She’s an orphan child that gets
adopted by her grandmother,

And she basically has
all this money, free time,

With no one to play with.

I kind of took that inspiration
and wanted to make it now.

I’m thinking a little girl
with a credit card.

What can she do?
She’s gonna go

And find herself a tailor
to make things that she wants.

[Laughter]

- I’m in love with this.
I think it’s fantastic.

You said that she probably
has a credit card...

- Yeah.
- And I know where she went--

Straight to chanel for kids.
- Yeah.

- When she took
the jacket off-- [gasps]

That dress.

Will you just take
this jacket off for us?

- Sure.

- Ooh, I love
the cutouts on the neck.

- What a stunning dress.
- Beautiful.

So she went to chanel,
then she went to westwood.

- I love how it connects
to the character,

And I think that
mismatched plaid is perfect.

- It’s a party dress.

It’s fun, but it’s also
super modern and cool

With the cutouts in the back
and--again, I would wear--

Are you gonna be making these
in 31-year-old sizes?

- I know.

- Only samantha would have
a couturier working for her.

My model is faith.

I would say she’s like a really,
really strong little girl,

So I wanted to take her from
having so much responsibility

To, like, a little party
with her girlfriends.

She loves fringe, so I had to
make her a vest that has fringe.

- Faith, what do you
think of your look?

- I actually love the fringe,

And I would definitely
wear this to, like--

Going out with my friends.

- So cute.

If I saw faith on the street,

I would ask her
where she got this. [Laughs]

I think it’s fantastic.

- Listen, I don’t know
of a little girl

Or a little boy
that don’t love fringe.

It’s just universal.

I think this really is one
of the most updated looks,

And I do think this particular
look is very youthful,

And it’s very age appropriate.

about your doll inspiration

And your look.

- My doll was rebecca.

My little girl loves
to wear twirly skirts,

So I knew I wanted
to make one of those.
