I expected today was to lose

Against somebody that I don’t
have respect for as a designer.

That surrounds us.

As you know, every day millions

are out on the streets.

And for some, the sidewalk
is their personal catwalk.

For this challenge,
you’re going to create a look

That is street chic.

Something that can be worn
every day of the week

And something that is
fashionable and progressive.

- You know, at lexus, we want
to make sure that every one

Of our vehicles
makes a very dynamic statement.

But we also want to make sure
that our drivers

Look and feel amazing
behind the wheel.

- So brian and I are going
to send you out on to

The streets of new york
to find your inspiration.

And we’re going
to send you out in style.

- Oh.

- Indeed, we are.

So we’re gonna provide you
with two vehicles to use.

We have an nx 200t turbo,
and an nx 300h hybrid.

These are our newest luxury
utility vehicles.

You’ve got a driver
assigned to each car.

So you can sit back,
enjoy the ride,

And look for your inspiration
in the streets of new york.

- So we have cameras for you,
so you can record people

You see, places that you visit.

You have two days
for this challenge,

And after your wonderful lexus
tour, i’m going to meet you

At mood where you will have
a budget of $200.

There are only five of you left,

So the stakes are very, very
high, as you know.

- Designers, your cars
are downstairs, so have fun.

Have inspiration.

- This is so cool.

- This lexus is amazing.

- It feels good riding in my
car--i mean, oh, the lexus.

I’m sorry.

I need something to catch
my attention.

I see stickers and graffiti
and street art.

I’m reacting to bright colors
and lines.

And there’s a lot of textures
to look at.

- It’s easy for me
to find inspiration

From graphics and architecture.

This whole time,
i’ve been wanting to make

This awesome mega-hoodie.

And it hasn’t seemed to fit
into any of the challenges,

So i’m glad
that I waited until the end,

’Cause now i’m gonna make it.

- Oh, kini. It’s you.

- I want to create something
that will stand out.

I’m trying to find shapes,
trying to find colors

Or any little thing
that’ll kind of inspire me

To create something more chic.

That’s a different color.
- It’s cool, yeah.

- I pay attention
to the people on the street.

I get a great shot of a guy
wearing a white caftan

With white pants.
He just stood out

Amongst all the grime
and the craziness

Of the lower east side.

knits that are

Jumping out at me.

This last challenge
is super important.

Hopefully i’ll make it through
and get to go to fashion week.

Ooh, a distressed vinyl
would be cool.

I want underneath the hoodie to
be a really fitted silhouette.

Four, four, two, and two pounds.

I find this amazing print.

It looks like stained glass
but just a huge face.

- I like that.
- Yeah, I like that too.

- Ooh, okay.
What about that?

I’m just gonna
make this amazing maxi dress.

I want there to be tons
of color blocking and movement.

And, honestly, i’m just looking
for colors that I react to.

Is that silly?

- That’s sophisticated.

- Two layers of this.
I’m creating a trench coat

With wax denim and a kind of
overexaggerated pencil skirt.

I’m gonna take three yards
of that.

- Can I see the price
of that so I can determine

How much I want and move on?

I want to make a skirt with,
like, little petals.

And then I want to do kind of
like a tribal print for the top.

I want to do a half
a yard of this.

- I’m looking for a really
crisp, white cotton.

- It’s really good.

- I also find this silk waffle
in this teal-y green.

I think it works really nice
with white, and I might

Hate doing an all-white look,
so I grabbed some of it,

So I go straight
to draping my trench coat.

I’m calling them petals
’cause I don’t know what

They’re called.

So we’re gonna go with "petals."
But I have to put stabilizer

Behind them, and so it’s a lot
of moving parts to this,

So i’m gonna try
to knock this skirt out today.

with the hoodie?

- You know I had
to make a hoodie.

My plan for the first day
is to go ahead

And knock out the hoodie.
It’s the most important piece,

So I want to get that done
and just work

On the knits the next day.

redo the neck a little bit.

to add some color into it.

really paying that much

- So this was my inspiration.

They have, like, paper planes
in the back.

So it’s like a
abstract kind of--

- So I decided to do
a pencil skirt with, like,

Petals coming up. Abstract
shapes, I would call them.

- With all of this flourish
and flaunt on this left side,

Why did you put a pocket in?

- Because I just thought
it would be--like you said,

Instead of being so basic,
I thought to have a clean pocket

Was just kind of--

- No, I wasn’t complaining
about this being basic.

I’m saying
it’s not basic enough.

- It’s a skirt that reads
very much like an art piece,

And I say that as a compliment.

- And then suddenly, we have
this tailored pocket.

It looks odd.

- When I look at this skirt,
it’s like an art piece.

In other words, ramp it up,
because everything else is

Of course, I have to use denim.
I did a trench coat.

- But the skirt is a lot,

So I wanted to keep
the top of it clean.

- We can definitely ramp it up

- We’re kind of doing
this rocker vibe to it,

Kind of taking it from this
little-kid look to--

And then we gave you
a second challenge.

You had to turn a losing look
from the season

Into a winning look.

We have an anonymous runway
show, which means we,

The judges, do not know which
designer created which look.

All right, let’s start the show.

- As nervous as I have been,

I feel very calm and very happy.
I love this dress.

I think my dress screams amanda.

It’s vaguely
what I wanted to accomplish.

It just feels a little rushed.

I really hope that the first
dress blends in and it’s all

They can think about.

Then maybe they’ll forgive
the shortcomings of the second.

- I think she looks awesome,
super cool.

I’m very happy with the way
the street wear looks.

- Most of the time when
I really, really love a look,

The judges don’t like it.

There is a part
of me that’s like, "you know,

I should’ve focused
on that second look."

It’s a pretty dress,

But it’s really,
really commercial.

And so I know i’m in trouble
for that.

- The skirt
now fits her perfectly.

It looks very sharp and clean
and exactly what I wanted.

- I’m overjoyed
with the street-chic look.

I think I have a very good
chance of making it

To fashion week.

My remake look is fun,
and I just think it nailed

What I wanted to do.

- It’s like revamped in adult
style, but better.

- My looks are strong,
and they’re clean,

So I definitely have a good
chance of making it through.

- Bella looks amazing
in this look.

So i’m proud of the end result.

This was the time
to show the judges

Who I am as a designer
and really just

Knock it out the park.

I can see the bunchiness
in the front.

I can see how the front
placement isn’t laying flat.

I’m not feeling as confident
as I had planned on feeling.

It would suck majorly
to get this close

And not make it to fashion week.

- She looks gorgeous.
She looks expensive.

She looks luxe.

That’s exactly what
I was going for,

And that’s exactly the vision
that I had in my head.

- It represents my design
aesthetic

And who I am as a designer.

I feel like I turned that look
totally around,

And it’s my wow piece.

It’s that drama--

Simple, sleek, sharp, and sexy.

- I’m thinking to myself,
"I think I got this."

- You are the final five.

- Kini, we start with you
first,

So let’s bring out your models.

Kini, tell us about your
street-chic look and then your

Do-over.

- It’s street chic,

So I created a coat and a skirt
to kind of make it flirty

And just a simple top
to kind of balance everything

All together.

For the do-over look,
I got mitchell’s look

From the emmy’s challenge.
So I just created

Something sleek, sexy,
and because red is such a loud

Color, I kept it really simple.

- I have mixed feelings
about the street style.

I do love the trench coat a lot.

I just don’t love so much
what is underneath.

This red, divine dress,
how clean this is--

It’s like pantone red.

And to do a one-shoulder arm
so successfully--

This is really,
really good work.

Emily, tell us about your
street-chic look

And your makeover look.

- So I knew right off the bat
that I was gonna do

A really cool hoodie.

I knew that I needed to keep
the silhouette underneath

Really minimal to have
the emphasis on the hoodie.

The re-style was
samantha’s dress,

Which I really loved
the bustier part of.

So I wanted
to keep that and keep, like,

This clean c*ck look.

- I don’t mind
your street-style look,

But I don’t know
if it was the smartest thing

For you to do on a very
important day like today,

Because it is borderline--
could look like a pajama.

- You know what
surprises me, emily?

- What?

- That you seem to have
a very definite point of view.

And I see it here
with your street style.

And I am disappointed that I did
not see that with this do-over.

- I don’t think either
of these two looks

Would be runway ready.

- Amanda, tell us about
your street-chic new york look

And your makeover look.

- I obviously love color
blocking and patchwork,

So I really kind of wanted
to go back to that.

And my do-over look
was fade’s avant-garde look.

Instead of knowing exactly
where the lines are gonna go,

They kind of travel,
and you don’t know where

They end up.

- Your street chic
looks amazing.

And I loved it.
On the redo look,

It’s a little bit like,
"i’m tarzan. You’re jane."

It’s just reminding me of,
like, tron right now because of,

Like, the yellow lines.
You know what I mean?

Out of the movie.

- I love your street style.
It is bohemian chic.

- I’m a big fan of this dress.

- I’m impressed.
I shouldn’t like it,

And I love it.

about your street-chic look

And your do-over.

- I got my inspiration
from soho.

So I got inspired
to do the skirt.

I wanted to do a pop of color
and a welt pocket.

So, when she came out,
she can kind of have,

Like, a little edge and fun.
And for the do-over,

I got korina’s coat, and I used
it for the front draping

And a little bit in the back.
It’s a nice, simple black dress.

I just would be terrified
to wear that on a carpet

In fear of adding weight,

You know,
in just the wrong place.

- I’m kind of in between
with both of the looks,

To be honest with you.

Sean, tell us about your
street-chic look

And your makeover look.

- For my street-chic look,
I kind of wanted to create

A look that was clean,
sterile, beautiful, geometric--

Fresh look that would really
just pop on these streets

That are so chaotic and dirty.
And the makeover look--i had

Sandhya’s kids’ little jumpsuit.

So I got the really,
really small outfit.

With the help of sandhya,
we kind of came up

With this coachella feeling.

I just want it to be like an
expl*si*n of, like, happiness.

- I mean,
what is going on here?

It is fantastic.
This white look--

- I thought
you were gonna say--

- You are a genius.

of the best pieces

That i’ve seen
on project runway.

came out--

I thought it was delicious,
sublime, modern.

And I was just blown away.
