09x23 - Leavin' Louisiana

Post by bunniefuu »

[theme music playing]

[Jamie] This is the true story...

[Matt] ...of seven strangers...

[Melissa] ...picked to live in a mansion...

[Kelley] ...work together...

[Danny] ...and have their lives taped.

[David] To find out what happens...

[Julie] ...when people stop being polite...

[Jamie] ...and start getting real.

-The Real World.
-[Julie] ...New Orleans.

[theme music concludes]

[mid-tempo guitar music playing]

[hums]

[Danny] Is this the Pauly song?

[Julie] Yep. You want to hear it?

-Uh-huh. Are you finished?
-Almost. I don't have all...

I don't wanna hear the whole thing

-if you're not done yet.
-I'll wait.

We'll wait till I get all the words.

I asked Julie to write a song for Paul,
'cause I want to take it back to him.

The way she does is,
I give her my scrapbook

that's got all his letters in it

and she basically just pulls
parts of his letters out.

And you're the first person
I've ever written a song for.

I've written songs about people,
this is a song for you and it's different.

'Cause it's not about me at all.
I'm, like, not involved at all. I love it.

Except for the fact
that you're writing it.

-[Julie] But that's so not even...
-[chuckles softly]

But you're not involved, right?

You should go and sing it
in front of your school.

-[Julie] Oh, God.
-[laughs]

[Julie] Yeah, I guess I had
a lot to risk coming here,

but I also am walking away
with so much more.

that it was ultimately worth it.

And if I can go back to BYU
and make a difference

that, too, is gonna be a great thing.

I can go back
and not go back to the way it was.

You know, BYU will be
an entirely different experience now,

and it should be.

I don't want it to be
the same as it was before.

[Danny] You're probably gonna go back
and, you know,

so what, a lot of people
probably won't like you,

-but [bleep] them.
-I know.

There's a lot more people
that are gonna look up to you

and you're gonna, you know,
inspire them to change, too.

[Julie] Through talking to Danny
and, like, seeing

that he is such an outstanding person

and that his love
for his boyfriend is real,

I'm realizing that love
doesn't have boundaries like that.

How dare people, like, question your love?

'Cause, like, I... I get all pissed off
when people question my feelings,

and, like, make me justify what I feel,
what I think, you know?

And people do that to you so much more.

They'll never live
with you and understand.

When it comes down to it,

I really just don't give a damn,
and that's a good feeling.

I can't, you know?
If I did give a damn, I'd fall apart.

-[thunder rumbling]
-[rain pattering]

[Julie] All right, I'm making
a very crucial phone call.

-You think about that right now.
-With who? To who?

I'm calling my school
and telling them what I'm doing

and asking them if I can come back.

I'm trying to register for school

and I need clearance
from the Honor Code office.

I don't know why I didn't call,

-like a million years ago.
-[dial tone ringing]

[sniffs] I guess 'cause I just realized
that I want to go back.

I haven't told anybody
at... at school, because, like...

I really thought I wasn't gonna go back.

-[telephone beeps]
-Hi, my name is, uh, Julie [bleep],

and I really need to talk
to somebody about, um...

um, about a situation, and,
um, I... I want to make sure

that I will still be accepted
back to school in the fall.

The president of the Honor Code office

at BYU's gonna call
and tell me if I can go

-to school in the fall.
-Why can't you?

Me being here is breaking so many rules.

-Example.
-[Julie] I live with boys,

I don't keep curfew, there is alcohol,
and immoral things going on.

-Ooh.
-[Julie] Shut up.

[Jamie] You've broken
every rule in the book.

[Julie]
That's not very comforting right now.

-[thunder rumbling]
-[rain pattering]

You've been painting up a storm
getting ready for your debut.

[Melissa] Yep.

[Melissa] Seeing Lionel pull his gallery

together in six days
from nothing into something,

and to have my art next to his
is very intimidating.

-How many paintings do you have now?
-[Melissa] Twenty-one.

You haven't seen I Will Survive.

-[Matt] No.
-It's on eight-by-ten

and there's a red fish
with his mouth open like this,

then there's little tiny fishies,

a whole school of fish
that he's about to eat,

but there's one pink fish at the top
and she has a scarf on.

-[Matt] Oh, who is that?
-It's me.

[Jamie] Before she got into painting,

Melissa was emitting this vibe of,
like, craziness,

and now that she's painting,
it's just like a complete calm.

[Matt] Does one of them
have on a Hawaiian shirt?

No. But then when I finished it,

-I realized there were seven fishies.
-[Matt] You know why?

'Cause it was a Freudian slip
on the canvas.

[Melissa laughing]

[Lionel] Let your artwork speak for you.

-Like, if somebody...
-[Melissa] Do people come up to you

-and criticize you?
-Well, you'll get that sometimes.

You just gotta take it.
I mean, don't freak out.

To know and understand that some people

might go in there
and criticize it blows my mind.

Ew, I never even thought of that.

[rock music playing]

[traffic whizzing]

[Matt] I thought you'd be interested.
It's a powerful story.

-[Julie] Where did you find this?
-[Matt] It's in Newsweek.

What's really good about it
is that it said, like,

there's a lot of people in his community

and his Mormon friends
that really supported him

but that overall

he couldn't find acceptance,
so he k*lled himself.

[sniffles, sobs softly]

[sobbing]

[coughing]

[rock music concludes]

[mid-tempo music playing]

[Julie] The whole story
just really made me sick

to my stomach, like,
I couldn't deal with it.

So, that's what that was about.

[Kelley] Yeah, that's pretty rough.

[Julie] I don't wanna be
in a community that's judgmental,

and I think my community
is very judgmental.

There's a lot of things
I just don't know about.

-But that's okay.
-But it's okay, you're right,

and that's the thing
I gotta keep remembering,

is that it's okay to be confused.
And the fact that I question it

is a very good thing, it really is.

There are things
that I will never waver from,

and that conviction
has only gotten stronger here.

And then there are some things
that I have never questioned

that now that I have questioned,
I am learning, you know,

what I wanna adopt
and what I wanna dismiss.

She's challenged
probably every single thought

she's ever had in her entire life
and came out with a different one.

The point of learning
is then you're gonna get to a point

where you start
to figure things out, right?

And so that'll happen,
and then, like, it's all good.

-[mid-tempo music concludes]
-[upbeat music playing]

[indistinct chatter]

-[Jamie whooping]
-[Melissa exclaims]

-[Jamie] Hi, there.
-[Melissa] David, hey, what's up?

The most surprising event
for me is the fact

that David has made a cameo at my opening.

[Melissa] That... I could see

how you could hang
that above your keyboard.

I'm not saying everything's smoothed over,

but for me, I think that he took
the high road on this one.

-If you say "I'll live" really fast.
-Okay. [laughs]

-Okay.
-[Melissa laughs]

It just was weird and almost out-of-body

to see people actually looking at my art
and pointing at ones that they like.

[man] Have you sold any prints?

I don't have any prints.
Th... I'm just exhibiting tonight.

I wish I had some prints to sell.

People want to buy this.
For me, that's just unbelievable.

People have already tonight
asked me if they could buy them.

-[Jamie] Really?
-Already.

[Jamie] She's getting
all negative emotions

out through her art.
And I mean, I think they're great.

[Melissa] It's crazy that my art

is now hanging on a wall somewhere.
I must say, I'm very proud of myself.

[upbeat music concludes]

-[birds chirping]
-[mid-tempo music playing]

What about this summer?
You know where you're going?

[clicks tongue] L.A.

First, going back to Tampa
is not going to work.

I will get right back into that mud pit
and lay there and b*tch and complain.

No, new Melissa says,
"Go straight to L.A."

My dad said he won't help me,
but that means he will.

[imitating]
"If you wanna move out there

with them fruits and nuts, that's you."

[chuckles]

[Melissa]
What are you gonna do for this summer?

-[Julie] I don't know.
-I have a great idea.

-How about you go out to L.A. with me?
-That would be fun.

I'm planning on going out to L.A.

[Julie's dad] You really want to do that?

-That's what I want to do.
-[Julie's dad] What are you gonna do?

Dad, I don't want you to think
that my going to L.A. this summer

is in any way defying
or rebelling against you.

I think the reason
that I would rebel so much

is 'cause I was always
feeling stifled by my situation.

But now I'm feeling this freedom

and realizing that
I'm in control of my own life,

and so I don't need to rage and rebel.

-Hey, Dad?
-[Julie's dad] Yeah.

Listen, um...

I just want to tell you that I'm sorry
for, like, being a punk.

[Julie's dad] I egged you on,
so it's my fault.

Yes, I think you do egg me on,
but I... Maybe if we both...

I think things can get better,
don't you think?

-[Julie's dad] I think so.
-Yeah.

I had the courage to say things to him

that maybe don't fit his little image
of his "perfect little daughter,"

but it's okay, and he is dealing with that
and he still loves me for it.

[Julie's dad] Not having your roommate
talking you into adopting

a different kind of life, are you?

No, but I've con... I've decided for myself

I would like to adopt
a different kind of life.

[mid-tempo music concludes]

I'm almost packed.

-[Paul] Are you?
-Mm-hmm.

Everything, like, revolves around Paul
and us being together.

[Paul] I'm so happy that...

that you got everything
you got out of this.

-I got lots out of it.
-[Paul] You did.

-I got you out of it.
-[Paul chuckling]

It's the best thing, without a doubt,

that's ever happened to me,
and I'm so glad and so lucky

that he's a part of my life.

[guitar playing]

[Julie] ♪ I see your face
Every time I turn around

'Cause I love you
With everything I have

And all I am

No one else but we
Ever needs to understand

You paint a portrait of me
With your life and with your hand

I have faith in our love

I have faith in our love

That's it. [chuckles]

Jules, that was the sweetest thing
anybody ever did for me.

[both chuckle]

-[kisses]
-[chuckles]

Seriously, like,
I recognized every bit of that.

[both chuckle]

Those are like all of his letters to me.

-[Julie] Mm.
-[sniffles] I'm gonna cry.

-[Julie laughing]
-[upbeat music playing]

[Kelley] We're making a slumber party
so everybody can sleep in here tonight.

[Danny] Are we having
a last night slumber party?

[Kelley] Yeah.

[Jamie] Are we gonna be like kids
and jump around on the bed?

-[grunts]
-[Kelley] Yeah! Baby, baby...

Oh, no. Julie, stop. That's part
of the game that we cannot play.

[chuckles]

[Jamie] Meanwhile,
Julie's busy molesting...

This girl will not give up until the end.

He's gorgeous. I can't not look at him
and not be attracted to him.

[upbeat music concludes]

[mid-tempo music playing]

[Jamie] She's trying to develop
an art career.

She's been getting into painting and all,

and, for her to be moving out to L.A.
It is a big step, you know?

And so, I'm pretty excited for her,

and then Julie has another year
at Brigham Young

which she's not completely amped
about, but...

[Jamie's mom] I cannot imagine.

[Jamie] Dave's going to summer school.

Matt still has another year
at Georgia Tech.

Danny's really not sure what he's doing,
although he's gonna go live with Paul.

And then, uh, Kelley is actually serious
with a resident doctor down here.

She's coming back and actually
living back in New Orleans...

-[Jamie's mom] Wow.
-...with Peter, so that's pretty cool.

Everything that's happening
in the future will happen,

but nothing in this world
will ever be like

what life is at the Belfort house.

-[mid-tempo music concludes]
-[David] Even though we had

-this mad beef or whatever...
-[chuckles]

...I always knew you were strong

and I always knew
that whatever you put your energies into,

-I know you're gonna succeed.
-[traffic whizzing]

And it may not mean anything
coming from me but...

-No, it means a lot coming from you...
-I know...

...'cause I didn't think, this whole time

that, like, you were perceptive
or that you knew anything about me.

I, one, have faith in you,
two, I know you're gonna make it.

I'm proud of you
for everything you've done

-and everything you're gonna do.
-Thank you.

Hug.

[uplifting music playing]

All right, we are about to walk
out the door and it'll be the last time

that we're ever in the Belfort again.

I don't know, for some reason,
I just feel, like, a lot more mature now.

[Julie] I think I definitely
have been tested in coming here

and I've been able to keep my mind open
and at the same time,

stand firm to what I know
fundamentally to be true.

[door creaks]

[tires screeching]

-Danny.
-Find me somewhere.

[Julie cheers]

-Jules. I'm gonna miss you.
-[uplifting music concludes]

Danny! I know you didn't
just leave me over here

-all high and dry like you always do.
-I am not leaving yet.

-Hold up.
-[Melissa laughs]

[Danny] I can honestly say
that I am very, very excited

to, like, go out into the world

and put the things I've learned
here to use.

Don't cry. If you cry, you'll make me cry.

-[chuckles] Uh-huh.
-[Danny kisses]

-I'll see you soon.
-[Julie sobbing]

[Julie] Sucks, dude.

I definitely know the person
I'll miss the most is Kelley.

-Until later. Goodbye.
-[Kelley] Bye, boy.

[Danny] Kelley was the only person
I felt like, here,

I really connected with
on a, like, a real level.

-Bye, Kelley.
-Bye, Danny.

-[Kelley] Bye, Matt.
-See you, Kell.

[mid-tempo music playing]

-[David grunts]
-[Matt laughs]

[laughs]

[Matt] Julie.

-How's it going?
-Mattie.

-[Matt] What's going on, Julie?
-Chilling.

So, you think you might miss me?

[clicks tongue] Nah.

You're a pretty cool gal, Julie, you know?

-[Julie chuckling]
-[Matt] I'm gonna miss ya.

-I'm glad we finally got along.
-[Julie chuckling]

So, I mean, it means a lot
to be able go out

-on good terms, you know?
-[Julie] Mm-hm.

So...

Well...

It's been real, Jule-mite.
[chuckles softly]

It's one of those experiences in life
that I'm glad that I've had

'cause it's seasoned my character
and kind of put a different spin on me.

I feel like I'm kind of growing up.

[chuckles] I really got to go.

Okay. Give me one kiss.

-Wait, wait, wait, wait. [chuckles]
-It's gonna... it's gonna be quick.

No, no, no. You got to be...
you got to be nice.

I'm trying.

-On three. No. [smooches]
-Mm. [chuckles]

All right, I'll see you later.

-I got to go.
-Come on, come on. [smooches]

[laughs] You're such a nerd.

-I got to go. It's smooth, Pete.
-[laughs]

Let's bounce on this quickly.

Julie, keep smiling.
God loves you, you know that. Keep going.

[exhales sharply] This is it.

-[David] My man.
-[Jamie] Keep it real.

[indistinct chatter]

[Kelley kisses]
Go take care of your mama, okay?

[David] I will.

You're gonna make it, baby.
You're gonna make it.

This is some bittersweet stuff, isn't it?

I can say I've changed
as far as what I've learned

and... and what, you know,
what can be implemented to me,

but the very core is still the same.

-[Melissa] Bye, David.
-Bye.

[Kelley] Oh, God!

[Peter] I just got here.

-[Kelley] Just now?
-Yeah.

You just walked out the door?

-Oh, my God! [chuckles]
-[Peter kisses]

[Kelley] Okay, so, what do we have to do...

-[chuckles]
-...to get you to my house?

Y'all have a safe trip.

[Kelley] We will.

We hit rocky roads

and we all think too much
and we're too sensitive,

but... [chuckles softly] ...I think,
for the most part, everybody did the best

they could with what we had,
and we made it work somehow.

You go get 'em.

-You knock 'em dead out there, okay?
-[Julie laughs]

[Kelley] I'm not crying on camera.
Walking away right now, okay?

-[laughs]
-Have fun. Have fun.

-I will. I will.
-[Jamie] Be safe.

-See you.
-Bye, Peter.

-[Julie] Treat her good.
-Don't get in too much trouble

-in L.A. [chuckles]
-[Julie] She is such a good person.

Bye, guys.

-[Jamie] See you later.
-See ya.

-Jame-Jame.
-[whoops]

-[Julie] Mm. [whoops]
-Yeah.

-[Julie] So, I'm gonna just walk this way.
-[Melissa] Bye, Jamie. [indistinct cooing]

Melissa, I love you, girl.
I love you so much. [kisses]

[Melissa] I'm gonna miss Jamie
so unbelievably bad.

And I hope he misses me the same,
so that when we reunite...

[exhales deeply]
...in that hotel in Chicago,

and we start making that sweet love,
boy, it'll be good. [chuckles]

I grew.

I accomplished something.
And it's... it's awesome.

-Au revoir.
-[Julie chuckling]

[Melissa] I'm starting all over,
brand-new style.

You are, girl.

-I am.
-You go.

I'm gonna get on that plane
and not be scared 'cause I'm brave now.

[groans]

We're gonna party in L.A. Whoo-hoo!

[Melissa] We are.
We're gonna have a great time in L.A.

-Bye. [chuckles]
-[Julie chuckles]

[hopeful music playing]

I'm gonna miss a lot of things
about the Belfort.

My favorite memory with David

is when we went to the studio
and he let me rap.

He let me flow. [chuckling]

That rave that I went to with Danny,

that's probably, arguably the best time
I have had in New Orleans.

The mud pit
is an interesting memory. [chuckling]

I don't know what I was thinking
with that mud pit.

[crowd laughing, cheering]

[Julie] Oh, and Melissa's birthday party?
Whoo-ee!

And my favorite memory with Matt...

-[smooches]
-Mm. [chuckles]

[Julie] Every person is one chapter,
one segment,

maybe a fragment of a sentence
in the book of your life,

and I believe that every single person
in this house has written

a chapter in my book
and has changed the story in a big way.

[airplane engine whirring]

How did they react
at Brigham Young, Julie?

Oh. [laughs] Well, they're...
they're still reacting... [chuckles]

...and I'm reminded of that every day.
Um, we're kind...

Well, did they...
did they throw you out of school?

Not as of yet.

We're still kind of working through
the process with the Honor Code office.

You signed the code
that you would not, what,

live with people of the opposite sex
while attending school?

-Exactly.
-And did they deem

The Real World as breaking that code?

Um. Well, technically, I was living

in the same house with boys,
the same mansion... [chuckles] ...as boys.

Do you feel you've broken the code?

I feel that while I was in New Orleans,
I was true to myself,

and that's what's important to me.

[hopeful music concludes]
