-[Lacey] Hello.
-[David and Paul] Hello.

[Lacey] Hi. Come on in.

What's happening, guys?

Paul and David come over
to look at our progress for our film.

-[Rachel] Do we get one of those?
-You get one of these.

[Lacey] You should've wrapped it
if you didn't want us to see it.

It's for y'all to call us...

-[Danny] For real?
-...when there's editing,

filmmaking issues,
and you want to talk to us.

We have a lot of work to do,
and, you know, I am nervous,

'cause the big shots
at Austin Film Society

are gonna be looking at it.

So, I mean, if you had to tell me
what you think

the best stuff you filmed was,
what would you think it was?

I liked when we went
to the campsite to film Hellogoodbye.

The campsite thing sounds fabulous.

[Melinda] What I liked about it, though,
is because they opened up a lot more,

-and it was cool to see...
-[Paul] Mm-hmm.

...them in their kind of own environment.

It's a really touching moment,
I think, and it's a great song,

so I think that's definitely
gonna be a key moment

that we can use in our documentary.

[Paul] What about Enon?

We did an interesting interview,
um, by the van.

All the names I'd chosen were taken,

so I kind of came up
with Enon sort of quickly.

What was your favorite stuff?

By far when Halifax
was actually playing on stage.

[Wes] I was holding the camera up,
and he was singing over me.

He sweats off his forehead,
and it falls down onto the camera lens.

Literally, you would see
the sweat on the camera lens?

-It's sick.
-[Paul] That's good.

So, this is gonna be a 15-minute film?

And you guys have got

At least, yeah.

Okay, this is what I'm gonna
suggest you do to make this easier.

Somebody ought to take responsibility

for an assembly of the very best material.

We not only have our reputations,
Paul's reputation at stake,

but we also have our job at stake,
because this is to show

the Austin Film Society what we've done
and that we deserve a little vacation.

-So, I think this is a huge deal.
-[music concludes]

What I want to do next week is come back
and just look at your assembly edits.

This seem like a decent plan?

-[techno music playing]
-[Nehemiah] I definitely think

that a lot of people
that are gonna view this

are gonna be able to assist me,
as far as career-wise.

So that's why I'm not gonna
just give any type of project to them.

[Wes] This is a great catalyst
for another job in the future.

So he knows that he needs
to do a good job.

There's more pressure on him
than there is on me.

And I'm gonna let that pressure
on him make it so I can sleep at night.

-[music concludes]
-[Lacey] All right, let's see it.

[Wes] Yeah, he can get mad all he wants.

I bet he wouldn't be able
to do it like that.

-[Lacey] I know.

This is what I'm talking about,
you know how to do this, Danny doesn't.

So, Danny can say he wants to do it,

but the end product's gonna
look like crap unless you do it.

I can honestly say
I'm gonna have, probably,

a one percent duty
during the editing process,

and that will be
to fill up people's drinks, maybe,

or to come in and say, "Hi"
every once in a while.

But for the most part, I'm gonna
stay out of that editing suite,

unless I'm taking a girl in there.

I saw what Nehemiah did
and it was just, like, genius.

What are you and I or Jo
or Danny or Lacey gonna do

to compare to what he did?

[Nehemiah] I don't really think
I should do it all myself,

but I think from here on out,
it definitely rests

on my shoulders to do the whole thing.

Honestly, there's one seat,
there's one mouse, there's one keyboard.

All right, well,
I'm not gonna do anything then.

I'm going out every night now.

Good. 'Cause that's what I'm gonna do.

We're having a documentary
with no talking.

-Each one is a song.
-[Rachel] What?

[Lacey] Every single one is a song.

I'm nervous because I don't think
our assembly is that great.

If you watch me, like,
"Oh, that's good,"

and then I watched them,
I was like, "Oh, that's good."

And then I was, like, "Wait."

"You can't have a documentary
with nobody talking."

[Rachel] Everybody kept saying,
"Don't worry about it,

Nehemiah's got it, and he's so awesome."
And I'm, like, "Okay."

[Rachel] They're good,
but they're music videos.

Well, we can't have three music videos.
I mean, what is South by Southwest?

[Lacey] That's what I said
to Johanna this morning.

I don't think it's smart

to just say, okay, well,
Nehemiah did these videos,

and when Paul and David come here,
we'll have nothing to work from.

-Okay, everybody back to work now.
-Back to square one.

[Rachel] We can't go on our trip

because Nehemiah wanted
to make music videos.

Because that's what he wants
to do in life.

I want to get this done,
and I want to go on a trip, and...

if nobody else does,
I mean, they're just... I don't know.

-I'm gonna be so stressed out now, Lacey.
-[Lacey] I'm sorry.

It's gonna be in the back of my head
that it's not right.

-[music concludes]

[Melinda] Paul and Jen and David
are looking at our piece

-the day before we have to screen it.
-[music concludes]

So, how long is the cut we're looking at?

-Fifteen minutes.
-[Jen] Really?

-[Paul] Wow.
-[Jen] Wow.

Is that good or bad?

-You're down to time. Maybe you're done.
-[Jen] Yeah, I mean...

[all laughing]

[Lacey] I think that Paul, Jen and David
are very frustrated with this assembly

that Nehemiah has put together
because it has absolutely no substance.

It's just 15 minutes of nothing.

I mean, basically, it could
have been 15 minutes of anything,

and it would have been better.

[exhales] I mean,
should I just give the advice that I have,

or should we just go around,
have all three of us...

The characters are gone.
I've got music videos.

It's sort of like...
What you wanna be able to do

is I want to have some sort of idea
of who people are.

'Cause that was something
I was missing from the beginning.

I didn't have that.

This is the articulation
of what this film's gonna be about.

[Paul] Look at the music,
the music can't go on that long

before I see them doing something
that makes me feel something about them.

So, see, here's my suggestion
for tomorrow.

If you guys can make a commitment
to work hard on this tonight,

just have this constantly going
as much as you can for now,

let's say till maybe twelve o'clock
or something tomorrow,

here's some easy things you can do.

[Melinda] What time
are we showing tomorrow?

At five o'clock. They probably
want you up there around four o'clock.

[hip-hop music playing]

-Sounds easy. Now, we're leaving you to...
-Do it.

I think Paul, at this point,
has very, very low hopes for us.

-[Jen] Good luck. [chuckles]
-Yeah.

[Melinda] I would definitely
like to prove to Paul that,

yeah, we're just seven bums
who like to sleep and drink,

but we can pull
something like this together.

[Nehemiah] You guys sure
you don't wanna go?

-No, I'm okay, sweetie.
-Okay.

Tonight, I'm going to be going down
to the Velvet Spade.

A friend of mine named James,
his band is having a little jam session,

and I've been invited
to be one of the guest emcees.

[Rachel] We know that we have to get
the project done

by tomorrow afternoon for the screening,
and Nehemiah says he's going out.

[funky music playing]

[Rachel] I'm figuring that Nehemiah's
not the best person to count on

at this point in time,

so Mel and I stay up
and take turns working on the project.

-[music concludes]
-[hip-hop music playing]

[crowd cheering]

When I'm on stage,
it's sort of like a good tension release.

All the stuff that I'm saying
is improvised.

None of it is written.
I just go up there and just say

what's at the top of my mind
in the heat of the moment.

I don't know. It's crazy.
When I'm up there, I just transform.

[Ryan over phone]
What have you been up to today?

My bosses came over to watch the assembly
we're supposed to show tomorrow.

-[Ryan] Uh-huh.
-Remember I said I was worried

Nehemiah wouldn't get it done?

-[Ryan] Yeah.
-Well,

it's not that he didn't get it done.
He just threw something together,

and it was horrible.

Our boss gave us
a list of things to do to it

before tomorrow, when it's due...

-[Ryan clears throat]
-...and Nehemiah went out

and isn't doing it, so Melinda
and Rachel are in there

trying to do it, and they don't know how.

For his benefit, I think

that Nehemiah needs to put more care
into how this is coming out,

because this is what he loves, supposedly,
and what he wants to do.

It's like if our job was a haircut,
I love cutting hair, so I wouldn't wait

till the last minute
and chop up something.

All Nehemiah has to do
is take out those little pieces

and glue them together,

and since he's Mr. Film Student,
that should be nothing.

[Ryan] Yeah.

The part that sucks is it has to be done
for tomorrow, or we can't go on our trip.

-[music concludes]
-[door opening]

-[Rachel] What's wrong?
-[Nehemiah] Nothing.

[Rachel] How was the show?
Did you have fun?

Very much so.

But I came home
'cause I want to do some editing.

The project will be done

by our deadline.
I am 100 percent certain,

because that's just
the type of person I am.

Just like I've been telling everybody
from the very beginning,

I will stay up as long as it takes
to get this project done.

[snoring]

[Lacey] I think that Nehemiah's
definitely selling himself short.

I just see what Nehemiah's opportunities
are by doing this project,

and it aggravates me
that he's not taking advantage of them.

It just seems like a waste.

[snoring]

[birds chirping]

-[mooing]
-[rooster crows]

[hip-hop music playing]

[Nehemiah] Today,
I'm getting up early just to go in

and restart the whole project.

All right, dude?

[Nehemiah]
I'm going to start working on the project.

-You didn't get much sleep.
-[Nehemiah] Ain't about sleep.

It's about a finished project.

I want to make this project
viewable for a large audience

because it has my name on it.

I don't fail anything,
except for math twice.

I'm used to pressure.
I work well under pressure.

I'm not afraid that the trip
is gonna be sacrificed,

because I'm not gonna
let it be sacrificed.

Even though I have been doing
a lot of partying

and things of that matter,
when it comes time to work, I'll work.

And it got done.

[music concludes]

-[tense music playing]
-[computer mouse clicks]

[Rachel] Nehemiah?

It's saying something's wrong
and it won't let me digital cut it.

I'm sorry.

We have to output the project
from our computer

onto a tape before we have to leave
for the screening,

and we're having a lot of problems.

You just press "okay,"

and then it just comes back up
if you try it again.

-It's converting now, right?
-[Nehemiah] Let's hope so.

"Show mismatch sample rates
in a different color"?

What if we do sample bit depth to 24 bit?

-[Lacey] Is it working?
-[Rachel] It's being silly.

It's like 3:10, and we have to be
at the Film Society at four o'clock.

The documentary we have right now
is 20 minutes long,

and I have to dub it twice.

-Basically, I'm screwed.

[upbeat music playing]

Come on, baby, come on.

It's still thinking?

All these problems are happening,
and we're on the verge

of maybe not even being able
to bring our project to the screening.

This is a huge deal.

[computer mouse clicks]

[music concludes]

[dramatic music playing]

-What's it doing?
-Acting up.

[Lacey] Do you want me to call David
to come over?

[Johanna] It's frozen.

[Lacey] I cannot make it work.

I'm very frustrated.
I can't get it to output.

Nehemiah, Mr. "I went to film school

and I'm going to brag about it"
walks out the room

and leaves me to figure it out?
That's completely ridiculous.

Mel and Danny are making out in their bed.
I think Wes is asleep.

-David!
-[David over phone] Yes, ma'am.

You wanna hear the sound
of my panic voice?

-[David] Why?
-[Lacey] It's not working.

[David] Give me a little bit of time,
and I'll be over there for you.

Okay. Thank you.

That's where it glitches.
It turns on and does that.

And I don't know what that is.

Looks like Atari.

[dramatic music concludes]

So, where we at?

-[Lacey] Nowhere.
-[David] Uh-oh.

[Lacey] Same place as three hours ago.

-That's the sequence right there?
-[Lacey] Yes.

You should just do "Ignore time."
Uh, let's try it.

[rock music playing over computer]

[Lacey] Now it's working.

-You big jerky pants.
-[music concludes]

David did the exact same thing
that I had tried 12 times, and it worked.

You suck, but thank you. [chuckles]

[Wes] Would you suggest us taking
two cabs' worth of people there now,

and then you guys just showing up
with the project later?

-[David] Whoever's ready should go.
-Okay.

[Melinda] I'm really nervous

going to the Austin Film Society
for a screening,

because we are going to be
critiqued by professionals.

[Nehemiah] How you doing? Nehemiah.

Have you all been staying up all night
getting ready for this?

-[Wes] Yeah, we did shifts.
-Really?

[Nehemiah] I haven't slept yet.

That sounds like the first ingredient
of, uh, serious filmmakers.

[upbeat music playing]

-I have the key.
-Cool.

[Rachel] Because of these
outputting problems,

Lacey and I don't even
get out the door till 4:45.

Come on, we're going to work.

We're worried about making
all these people wait on us,

which is pretty unprofessional.

I'm not nervous at all. I'm more excited,
because this is the first time

that I actually get to see
my work on a big screen.

[man] First screening's always
the worst, by the way, so...

[all laughing]

South by Southwest is amazing.

We actually have never played
in Austin before,

so this is a really cool treat.

not watching the project as it's going on,

I'm watching what people are reacting to,

You're known as the type of band
that you, seriously,

The word of mouth gets around
faster than the music does.

this is an assembly edit.

So any kind of feedback
you can give about what you liked,

what you didn't care for as much

and ways to be able to structure this
would be great.

It'd be very, very helpful. Have at them.

I thought that the main character
of the piece was really South by...

-you know, the festival itself.
-Mm-hmm.

And that maybe shouldn't be the case.
That I really wanted to know

some of the characters
in the band a little bit more.

[Louis] I think it lacks some structure.

Halifax seemed to me
to be the most unfocused

in terms of what that's about exactly.

With Enon, there seemed to be
a little bit of a narrative.

Then with the third band,
there seemed to be a great narrative.

The film society people
are being really nice about our piece.

They're giving us great feedback.
They aren't saying anything too harsh.

They don't even look like,
"You stupid idiots, this is awful."

[Nehemiah]
As far as character development goes,

how would you sort of narrate
the first two that we did?

[Paul] I think you've already figured out
your story for Halifax.

You know, you say 1,200 bands
come to South by Southwest.

One of them is Halifax,
and this is their first big festival.

-There's your story.
-Okay, well...

Let's talk about the screening.

[Rachel] We have to have a plan of action
of what we're gonna do to fix the problems

that came up at the screening.

I think the big thing that we need here,
for all of them, is a storyline.

And that's basically
what they were saying.

[Nehemiah] They didn't give any advice
that would completely,

drastically change what we've done.

Basically, they just told us
stuff that we needed to add in.

[Lacey] I'm feeling a lot more confident

in the growth
that our documentary can take.

I think that our piece
has definitely earned us our trip.

-[David] Paul?
-[Paul over phone] Yes?

-Hey.
-[girls] Hi!

-[Paul] Where are things at?
-We talked about how the screening went.

[Paul] Okay, so David, you feel
pretty good where they're at right now?

-I feel very good about that.
-Oh, come on, Paul!

[Paul] For the time being, things
are fine, and you've earned your trip.

-[gasps]
-[Paul] Have a good time on it.

-What?
-Where are we going?

[music concludes]

-[Paul] Well, that I can't tell you.
-[Lacey] What?

[David]
I'll fill you in on some more details.

[Melinda] We are so pumped
because this is the moment of truth

that we kind of just worked
our butts off for.
