16x22 - Nehemiah's Actin' Up

Post by bunniefuu »

[theme music playing]

-[Wes] This is the true story...
-[Lacey] Yee-haw!

-[Lacey] ...of seven strangers...
-[Rachel] ...picked to live in a house...

[Nehemiah] ...work together
and have their lives taped...

[Johanna] ...to find out what happens...

-[Danny] ...when people stop being polite...
-Shut up.

-[Melinda] ...and start getting real.
-[all laughing]

-[all] The Real World: Austin.
-[music concludes]

-[upbeat music playing]
-[sirens wailing]

[phone rings]

Hello?

[automated voice] Hello,
this is a collect call from Nehemiah,

an inmate with the Travis County Jail.

To accept charges, press zero.

-To repeat...
-[beep]

[Wes] As soon as I find out
that Nehemiah is in jail,

then I am thinking two things.
One. [chuckles] I wonder what he did,

and how the hell we're gonna get him out.

[line ringing]

[automated voice] If you'd like
to make a call...

-What?
-...please hang up and try again.

-Travis...
-If you need help, hang up...

-[Wes sighs]
-[Lacey] Where is he?

-Travis County Jail.
-Really? What did he do?

It said, "This is from..."
It gave me an automated...

-Oh, and it hung up?
-And it hung up.

Well, at least we know he's in jail.

What do you want to make the pool
as to why he got arrested for?

[Lacey] I think
he got drunk and in a fight.

Yeah, I was going to say so.

[Wes] I'm thinking that Nehemiah

probably didn't just steal
a rose like Johanna did,

so this might require some bail money.
And that's a scary thought.

Nehemiah's in jail.

[Danny] Nehemiah, he's a really tough kid,

and, you know, he doesn't like
to take any crap from anybody.

He probably just snapped
and, you know, went off.

The wrong place
at the wrong time kind of deal.

[Lacey] We can't go get him.
He's not in the system.

We can go and find out
what we need to do to get him out.

[Danny] I know
I'm not gonna get him out tonight,

but I just want to go and,
you know, just so he knows that

somebody was trying
to get him out,

somebody does care about him.

[slow music playing]

He, um, apparently got
into a confrontation,

assaulted somebody, injured them,
and they pressed charges on him.

Even just to bail him out,

we're looking at 2,000 dollars
to 5,000 dollars just to bail him out.

Oh, my God, how is he gonna pay for that?

Because I know that
he doesn't really have much money

or family that he can go to
and get money from.

[Danny] So none of us have that,
so I don't know how we're gonna do that.

And then if he can't get
in contact with us,

and we can't figure out a bail situation,
then he's gonna be put in jail or prison.

[Johanna] Oh, my God.

Nehemiah is not gonna get out
unless somebody gets him out.

He's going to sit in jail
for 30 days until his court date.

[Rachel] I really hate to bring it up,
but, um,

we kind of have a premiere
in less than a week.

Oh [bleep].

-Nehemiah's supposed to do all the work.
-Our number one editor is now in jail.

[Rachel] I'm very worried
about our project.

Not because I'm a heartless, mean person,

but what's immediate and right now
is our project being due.

If it comes down to bailing him out,

I'm gonna see if production
can front me money.

I feel like it's my responsibility
not to leave my friend in jail.

[dramatic music playing]

[phone ringing]

-[Danny] Hello?
-[Nehemiah] Hello?

-[Danny] Nehemiah, what's up?
-I been trying to call...

[Danny] No, we've been by the phone, dude.
I even went to the jail by myself.

-What happened, dude?
-Got into a fight, dude.

They tried to fight me,
but then they took me in.

-[Danny] What's your bond?
-Three thousand.

Holy [bleep].

Oh! So what do we do?
Do you want me to call somebody

or do you want me to ask production
if they can front you your money, or...

Dude, 'cause, like,
my family does not have money.

I mean, we got... it's a deadline for work,

we have the premiere coming up,
and our go-to guy is sitting in jail.

Basically, we need to come up
with three grand really fast.

Let me see what I can do,
and I'll be down to the jail.

-Yeah.
-[Danny] All right, bye.

[Danny] Production says
they have permission,

probably from Nehemiah,
to take it out of his own check.

Really sucks

that this happened to Nehemiah,
especially 'cause he's so broke.

You know what?

He has a really hard head,
and, like, he knows better.

I love Nehemiah. I think he's a great guy.
I think he's a really deep person,

but something comes over
that kid when he's out at night,

he acts like a different person
when he gets drunk.

He chose the wrong thing,
and he's gonna pay for it.

You know what, maybe this is
a reality check for Nehemiah.

You just can't go around hitting people
and expect to get away with it.

To me, it's just kind of irresponsible.

And now I'm gonna go
get his a*s out of jail.

[Lacey] It's just another lesson in life.

Do not trust other people
to get the job done.

When Lacey and I find out that Nehemiah
might be in jail for a little bit,

we say, "Okay, let's give this a try."

We start organizing stuff in bins,

start watching the documentary,
taking notes about what needs to be done.

I think me and Lacey could do it,
but with a lot of help from David.

[upbeat music playing]

-[David] What's up? Is everybody here?
-So...

Um. No.

Danny and Nehemiah
aren't back from jail yet.

[David] My question is,

are we gonna be ready for the screening?
When is it, Wednesday?

We don't know the answer to that
because we don't know

how to put this together without Nehemiah.

I'm concerned that it's not gonna
get done in time for the screening.

-Right...
-[Lacey] I'm sure we can do it.

-[Melinda] Yeah. We can do it.
-[Lacey] I'm just telling him,

as of this point...

I think Nehemiah's gonna be
back within the hour.

Because Danny left
a while ago to go get him.

[Rachel] He just spent the night in jail,
he's not gonna sit...

No, he's gonna... he's gonna want
to come home and take a nap,

but then we can all help him finish it.

When I last sat with Nehemiah,
he was frustrated that he was,

sort of, he felt alone doing this.

-[Danny] What's up?
-What happened?

-Is he here?
-[Danny] No.

What happened?

[Danny] They won't even
let him out till, like, 5:30.

[Melinda] Really?

He's facing up to 4,000 dollars in fines
and up to a year in prison.

[mid-tempo music playing]

[Nehemiah] I'm very happy to be out.

I mean who wouldn't be happy
to be out of jail?

Confined to like a five-feet cell,
a bed so hard you could do push-ups on

with no pillow and no blanket. It sucks.

-Mm.
-[Johanna] I'll give you a hug, too.

Nobody hugged me
when I came back from jail. [chuckles]

He seems very, um,
distant and just shocked.

A little out of it,
just kind of like, dude,

like, I just spent
the night in jail. [chuckles]

-You all right?
-Yeah.

I don't usually fight often.

If I wasn't as stressed out
about doing the project,

I'm almost certain that
this wouldn't have happened.

Paul wants you and me
and Rachel to call him.

-He said after you shower and...
-[Nehemiah] Thank you.

[electronic music playing]

[Wes] All right, I want to hear this.
I want to hear this. I want details.

I want to know what happened in jail,
why he went to jail,

and if he's sorry for what he did.

I hit somebody.

-[Wes] Where? Why?
-[laughs]

[Wes] I said details. Don't be shady.

-Tell me.
-In front of the Best Wurst, actually.

I was talking to the
Best Wurst guy, or trying to.

His dumb [bleep] thought I was, like,
trying to cut in line or some...

And he, uh, he pushed me.

Said some things and I just hit him

and then the police grabbed me,
and arrested me like right then.

[Wes] What'd they say
your possible punishments are?

They didn't even say.

-Want to know what they told Danny?
-What?

[Wes] Uh. Up to another four grand
or up to a year in prison.

[Nehemiah] I decided to find the guy
because I knew I was in the wrong

and first thing as a man
is you can admit a mistake.

And I made a mistake.

-[Nehemiah] Hey, what's up, man.
-Oh, hey, what's happening?

Man, I wanted to apologize for last night.

Everything happened so
differently than I remember.

The only thing that's funny is,

I was saying,
"We're trying to help you out."

-I remember...
-[laughs]

...I remember, like, going up and then like,
you going like this to me. And then,

like, I was just...
it was two different things,

like two different things
were going on in my head. So...

All of a sudden,
you know, I felt threatened.

So I just started swinging. [chuckles]

And I hit the wrong person.

I didn't even know you worked there.
I just thought you were a random person.

No, that's what I was trying to say.

Even those guys
were trying to say, you know,

we try to be courteous to everybody.

-What's your name?
-I understand. Nehemiah.

[Jonathan] Nehemiah.
You wouldn't give me that last night

'cause you thought
I was against you. But I was with ya.

You know, I appreciate you
coming by and saying so.

Sorry you had to deal
with that [bleep] last night.

Me and the guy ended up on good terms,
you know? I'm glad I apologized.

I mean, I hope the charges are dropped.
I'll do whatever I need to do

just to keep my record clean,
and you know,

I'll take my consequences
and stand up like a man.

[upbeat music playing]

Now that I'm home I'm thinking,
"How am I going to get this project done?"

I am the only one working.
I'm in the editing room by myself.

I got all of my roommates
drinking and partying.

[rock music playing]

[Nehemiah] They want to party,
they want to do this and this.

Everyone was pretty much
depending on me to get it done.

Right now, I am more than willing

to put all the responsibility
on Nehemiah's hands right now.

-[rock music concludes]
-[dramatic music playing]

-No.
-Let's go to bed, huh?

-No, no, no.
-Why? What are you going to do?

-I've got to walk around a little bit.
-Okay.

I'm gonna go swimming.

[Melinda chuckles] What are you doing?

If you're going to puke in here,
puke on Rachel's side okay?

-[thuds]
-[Melinda laughs, yelps] Oh!

[laughs] Get away from the closet.
You're breaking everything.

-Okay, can you grab that door?
-[chuckles]

Are you going to be sick
or are you just really drunk?

Are you that drunk
where you want to break things?

'Cause you're looking at
those paintings kind of hungry.

I get home and I want to go use the phone,
call Eric and go to bed.

So I walk to the phone room
to go call Eric.

I said, "Wes, don't spend too long there."

"I just want to call Eric real quick."

And Nehemiah
is all the way over in the kitchen,

and Nehemiah goes,

"Don't tell Wes how long
he can talk to anybody on the phone."

And I said, "Mind your own business,
Nehemiah." And flipped him off.

Dude, Nehemiah... Ooh!

If you stick your finger up
at my friends again,

I will slap the [bleep] out of you, okay?

-Out of Nehemiah?
-Out of you.

I'm surprised that
Wes is acting like this,

because it wasn't even that big of a deal.

Oh, please, slap the [bleep] out of me.
I think it'd be hilarious. [chuckles]

And he just went like that
and I was like...

He got off the phone and I said,
"You still want to slap me in the face?"

And he slapped me in the face. And I go...

[Johanna] Wes is way drunk.

Wes, and he slapped me
in the face, for real.

-[Melinda] Like a real slap?
-Yeah.

And the second time, like it wasn't enough

to like jerk my head
all the way to the side,

but it was hard enough to make a sound.

It was hard enough...
It didn't leave a bruise or anything, but...

It was hard enough for me to get mad.

[Rachel] Wow, he broke our closet,
slapped me in the face.

He had a busy night.

Wes's lack of respect for people,
objects, money, anything...

I mean, I would never
consider Wes a respectful person, so...

it doesn't surprise me
that his comes out as anger.

[whispers] I'm sorry
for throwing something at you.

-[Melinda] Hmm?
-I'm sorry for throwing something at you.

[Melinda] Thank you.

You need to apologize
to Rachel for slapping her, too.

-I slapped Rachel?
-Yeah.

[tense music playing]

-Really?
-[Melinda] Yeah.

Where is Rachel?

[Melinda]
She's talking to Lacey in Joey's room.

[Wes] Rachel?

[Rachel] Wes, get out of here.
Wes, get out of here.

-[Lacey] She's mad 'cause you slapped her.
-[sighs]

No way I slapped her.
It was probably like...

[Lacey] I don't like
the drunken belligerence.

It's really irritating to me because

it's just such ridiculous behavior.

And also, even if I did slap her,
I could give a [bleep].

No, nobody deserves
to get hit in the face.

[scoffs] I would like to say I was there,
but I'm not, and anything I did,

I really don't remember.

[upbeat music playing]

[bell chimes]

Do you remember breaking Rachel's coffee?

-You did.
-[Melinda] Yeah,

you broke our closet door, too.
Like broke it, like it's...

-[Danny] Apparently, you did that.
-I didn't...

You guys, honestly, just 'cause I'm drunk
doesn't mean I can get blamed for that.

-I wasn't...
-Wes! I was in here. You threw that at us.

-[Wes] Oh, I did?
-[Melinda] Yes!

The closet door is broken,
it can't stay on the track

'cause you bent the thing
where the wheel is.

I don't remember doing this.

[Melinda] We were changing
into our swimsuits,

and you tried busting in like Godzilla.

-No, that wasn't me.
-[Melinda] Okay.

Just some other
red-haired kid I live with.

-[Lacey laughing]
-[Melinda] And you slapped Rachel.

-I didn't slap Rachel.
-[Danny] You hit Rachel.

Wes will throw chairs
in the pool and things,

but actually throw something
at me or slap Rachel,

that's scary,
and that's not normal behavior.

You hit her two times,
the first time you were just playing,

the second time
you actually slapped her.

Okay, Rachel, I need to apologize.

-[Rachel] That was bad last night.
-Yeah, honestly,

I don't remember the house last night,

and that was uncalled for
and disrespectful.

I just accept his apology 'cause I don't
think I have enough energy to...

to deal with it.

[upbeat music playing]

[Lacey] David's here.

-I, um, changed the Halifax songs.
-[David] Uh-huh.

-I added the Bond guy.
-[David] Cool. All right.

How about the jumping in the river stuff?

-Is that in there yet?
-[Nehemiah] No.

All right. Good changes.

So we're here working on it until...
it's done?

-[Nehemiah] Mm-hmm.
-[David] Okay.

Wednesday night is our night.

[Lacey} There's only two days left.

So it's gonna have to get done somehow.

Good or not, something has to be done.

So let's just keep moving on it, man.
No more delays.

[Nehemiah] I had
to spend a little, you know,

brainstorming time alone
in solitary confinement.

-[all laugh]
-A little.

My plan is to put all my effort
into getting this project done.

'Cause actions speak louder than words.
And I got to finish strong.

[upbeat music playing]

[Nehemiah] When you're actually
working down to the wire,

you can't just work five minutes,

you have to go ahead
and put in five or six extra hours.

["More Time" playing]

I need a little more now
Need some more time...

[mellow music playing]

[Nehemiah] I wonder how good
that's gonna look,

I go to jail, spend 16 hours,
come out, and then go right to work

-and get something done.
-[Wes] Are you pretty much done

with what you're gonna do,
or are you gonna do some fine-tuning?

[Nehemiah] I'm gonna fine-tune it.

Should be no more
than an hour's worth of work.

You know, for the premiere,
we got to go pimp.

-[Wes chuckles] Oh, yeah.
-We got to go pimp.

We got to go buy some shirts
with big collars.

[Wes laughs]

-And get decked out in, like...
-[Nehemiah] Old '70s suits.

[laughs] Yeah.

-[Nehemiah] You want to go right now?
-Yeah, yeah.

Just our secret, our secret.

All right, let's do it.

[upbeat music playing]

-[Nehemiah] Want to try this place first?
-[Wes exclaims]

[Nehemiah chuckles] Oh, my goodness.

[laughs]

[Wes] No, let's do it.

[mellow music playing]

[Rachel] The premiere has finally come,

and we finally get to show
everything that we've worked so hard on.

And I'm excited for it.

[both chuckle]

[laughs]

[both chuckling]

-[bleep] both of you.
-[Wes laughs]

[girls shouting]

I knew you had a plan!

I'm looking at Wes and Nehemiah's tuxedos
and having flashbacks of Dumb and Dumber.

It's a very good description of the two.

-[Lacey] Paul's gonna die.
-[Rachel laughing] Yeah!

It's a good way to go into the last night
with our bosses with a smile on our face.

[dramatic music playing]

[Wes] I'm extremely excited
to go to the premiere,

because I know that
the second the credits roll,

is the second I can leave
and not have to worry about it ever again.

-[chuckles] They look like...
-[indistinct chatter]

-[Paul] Come on.
-...like Dumb and Dumber.

You guys look interesting.

Well, thank you very much
for coming out tonight.

When I first heard that this is what
they wanted to have the kids do,

I think my initial response was,
"You've got to be crazy."

Uh, there are lots of jobs
that people can do,

but actually doing a film, you know,
takes some sort of preparation.

I started thinking back
about all the moments

we spent together trying
to do the job and all the fights

and everything that's happened

um, while trying to put
the documentary together.

And now it's just over, and, wow,
this is the end.

Everybody that worked on this thing
essentially had absolutely no background.

So what you're looking at is really

pretty much starting from the ground up,

to be able to do something
which I think you'll find,

you know, pretty, pretty enjoyable.

I said I will stay up as long as it takes

to get this project done,
and that's what I did.

I'm a man of my word.
And I stuck to my word. It feels good.

Without further ado,
The Real SXSW.

[applause]

[typewriter keys striking]

[carriage bar sliding]

[rock music playing]

[applause]

[indistinct chatter]

-[laughs] This is the longest light.
-[laughing]

-No, there's the Dillo!
-[Nehemiah] Damn it.

[Wes] Oh, my God!

Here's a bus.

[horn honking]

What the [bleep]?

-[laughs]
-Do you not work?

You got to be joking.

-She looked at us like...
-What does she think we meant by this?

I wasn't trying to turn her bus
into a carriage.

[laughs]
