- At the age of nine, my father had me reading books

on the Civil Rights Movement.

It turned me off from White America,

because I didn't have anyone there telling me, "Listen,

what happened then isn't happening now."

- I found some serenity in this little bar

called Drinker's Tavern.

- What was the name of the place that you went to?

It's my secret spot, and no one can go there ever.

- [laughing]

- Landon is nuts when he's drunk.

- It's gone from getting annoying to getting scary.

- Going out tonight, Landon and I are having our guys' night

out, and we're stopping by a little bar,

and we're gonna try to watch the game.

Oh my God, I don't even know.

- [indistinct chatter]

- Just amazing how rude people are.

I mean, yelling something, telling you to [bleep] off

and that you suck.

What you wanna do, man?

- I have a feeling we need to just drink these and get the

hell out of here.

- Uh, I think I'm ready to get home.

- ♪

- [bell dings]

- We found your spot.

- I know, they--

- Called Drinker's Tavern.

- Please, please, please, if you--if you really,

really don't like that place, or like if you really don't have

an affinity for it, I absolutely love it.

That's why I said [bleep] last night.

I'm like, "Where are they?"

And she's like, "They went to Drinker's Tavern."

I'm all, "[bleep]!"

I hit the bar so hard, I was like, "No!" My bar.

That bar is my place to run to when I need to be away

from the roommates.

- [static buzzes]

- You need time away from us?

What the [bleep], you know?

You don't even know my last name yet,

but you need time away from me?

- I just have such a strong sense that Mel doesn't like me.

And I really care about what people think of me.

- ♪

- [indistinct chatter]

- WOMAN: --[bleep] out of here.

Look, get your a*s over.

- Those are the kind of girls I went to high school with.

- For real? - Oh yeah. Oooh, man.

You just kept your head down when you walked.

The people that used to make fun of me, I'm like,

"You guys are laughing at me because I'm different,

but I'm laughing at you guys because you're all the same."

Nobody's an individual.

I didn't feel like I had to explain myself because I was

black and I dress a certain way, or I didn't like

a certain kind of music.

- You think if you would have sat down with some of

the brothers and sisters that

they would have understood? - No.

- Because even when I came in here, I told you that--I mean,

you were different than any other sister that I know.

I want Shavonda and I to be closest friends.

And I want to hang, to go out, to see--I mean,

just listen to music, just have a great time,

just really enjoy Philly together.

And the fact that I haven't been able to connect with my own

sister sort of shuts me off.

- I've been accused of acting too white.

When I've asked people what that means,

they can't really tell me.

So, I don't know.

I'm not gonna waste my years trying to figure out what

people think of me.

I just know I like who I am.

Everyone used to say, "You're the whitest black girl ever.

You're a coconut, you're an Oreo cookie, you're this."

And I'm like--that and, "If you care, my name is Shavonda, too,

you know, I'm a person."

- Why don't you embrace more things that are us, per se?

- I was raised differently.

I wasn't brought up to look at color of anybody,

not just myself.

- I don't know how to get to that point.

Like the other day, I was walking down the street,

and I swear to God to you, I was praying--like every time I

passed a person, I was like, "Lord, please,

just help me see a person, don't help me see color anymore."

But it's like I just can't get over it.

It's like I see color.

I mean, I see this white woman, I see this white man,

you know what I mean?

I just don't know how to get past it.

- I don't know, you have to let your guard down

or else your whole experience will be worth nothing.

I'm aware of my surroundings.

I'm aware of my past, I'm aware of sl*very,

I'm aware of where we've been as a people.

I just don't let it run my life.

- You know, I'm trying to grow so that I can become

a better person.

But it's really hard.

You think all the things you may have missed out on because you

were not viewing things in the open mind.

To realize that the way that you were...was not a good way to

be...is a hard thing to admit to.

and we're just totally cut it loose.

I think the major reason why I'm like trying to have so much fun

at night is because we're in Philadelphia, it's a new city,

and I wanna meet all these people, and I wanna have fun,

because I know this isn't gonna last.

- This always happen...right here.

I just wanna go and have a good time, just kinda like hang out.

- ♪

- You can tell yourself in your mind, even when you're drinking,

"I don't wanna go too far."

I'll get to a certain point, and I know that I need to stop.

Landon, we have to get going home.

- Give me minutes.

- And maybe Landon doesn't know how to do that.

- Melanie has decided to bring half of her little perfect bar

back over to our house to have an after-party.

We've been told before they're not gonna like us.

And right away, I just got like a bad vibe about this whole

thing, you know?

- No, you're a big, big [bleep].

- Hey! Yeah, oh, what are you gonna do?

Let go. Mel? - Okay. Then let--

- Landon when he's drunk, you never know what's gonna happen

next with him.

You never know if Landon's gonna hurt you,

if he's gonna say something mean.

He's like a volcano just waiting to erupt.

- I'm extremely shocked by how Landon is acting.

I know Landon gets drunk and ridiculous.

But I would have never have expected him to be this rude,

this disrespectful to me and my friends.

- I just wanna say that I--this is your house,

and all you guys are welcome here.

- I know. We're gonna let 'em in.

And if Landon needs to be controlled, we'll control him.

- Melanie's people--seriously, Melanie's people [bleep].

- [indistinct chatter]

- Oh my God, there's gonna be fights.

- [indistinct chatter]

We're all laughing now, but we it ain't gonna be funny later.

The coolest thing to do is ignore him, honestly.

When you ignore him, he'll go up to bed and he'll go to sleep.

- MAN: Don't get him riled up no more?

- Yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll just leave him alone.

- Way to go, Mel.

- Yeah, Landon's wasted.

He's talking to himself.

- You know what, Mel?

- Is talking to himself?

- He's talking to himself, and he's talking about me.

He's like, "Mel, you"--la, la, la.

- You know what?

I--I wish I was Mel right now.

I would feel so [bleep] cool.

- He can say I'm the stupid [bleep] slutty wh*re b*tch,

and I don't even care.

- But if he did, he'd get beat up, so it doesn't matter.

- I know. [laughs]

My friends would normally fight,

but they respect me, and they respect the house.

And they're gonna hold themselves back.

- Landon is night and day when he's drunk.

He becomes the opposite of the Landon we know.

- Oh, let's get an ambulance up here.

You know?

- You know sort of that [bleep] guy that you don't

wanna hang around.

- Landon has now stepped over from just being an a*s to now

you're threatening someone's life.

- ♪

- [chuckles]

- ♪

- So, yo, chill down, trying to get some steak, yeah?

- You want some steak?

'Cause I don't want any steak at all.

- I want some steak.

I'm intervening and stepping in because Landon's getting really

serious.

And there's a household of guys that could easily wanna start

some [bleep] with him.

And I'm like, "Alright, this is not cool anymore."

Yo, M.J.?

- LANDON: Get out of my [bleep] house.

Are you [bleep] kidding me?

- [banging]

- All these guys that think they're so [bleep] tough.

They're about to get opened up by about three [bleep] knives.

- They're gonna be cool, they're about to go.

- LANDON: Are you [bleep] kidding me?

- Nah, they about to go, so it's--

- LANDON: Yeah, they better be about close to being gone.

- How come yous people are talking [bleep]?

- I have no idea.

I have no idea, because--

- I don't wanna see Landon go down and try to fight all these

guys, because I'll be right there with him.

And we can't take these tattooed people all out.

- Seriously, I never in my life have disrespect I've had tonight

in my house.

- But that's something that you have to learn to live with,

because we live with three girls.

And we happen to live with one girl who is into dudes who are

just--we don't understand.

I don't know if Mel enjoys the attention that she gets from

them, or if it makes her feel like she's back home again.

But she likes to like the people that we normally

wouldn't be around.

I know where to fight my battles.

And my battle is--

- Dude, I wanted to fight my battle earlier.

- But you don't, because you've got to hold up--'cause I'm

telling you, you cannot beat up everybody.

We cannot beat up everybody in Philadelphia.

- Really?

We can beat everybody in our [bleep] house.

- Why drop down to their level?

You hang out and be you.

- You know what? I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I'm pissed.

I'm so happy I found them.

- MELANIE: They're all tough, but then when you get

to know them, they're sweethearts in the end.

- I see where Landon's coming from, you feel me?

'Cause the guys are street guys, you understand?

So, I was like--

- The problem is--Karamo, he's drunk and he's being an a*s --

like he is normally.

All that's gonna happen tomorrow when I talk to him again is he's

gonna say, "I'm sorry for being drunk again."

I'm way over Drunk Landon.

I wish he wouldn't drink so much.

We've all expressed that to him.

And, hopefully, you know, he'll get it.

- Mel, your friends are you so nice.

- Your friends, I felt, were really mean to me last night.

- What was the first thing that you did when--before you even

walked in the door?

- Before I walked in the door?

I don't know. Why--

- You told all of them they couldn't come in.

You were [bleep] disrespectful and rude to all of them before

they were at all disrespectful to you.

- Okay.

- I'm allowed to bring friends over.

This is my home, too.

If I wanna bring my friends over, and you, you know,

prejudge them before they even step in the door--that's -- .

- Mel, you asked us to prejudge them.

When you tell us that we can't go out and see your friends

because you don't want them to meet us.

- I didn't say you can't go out and see my friends.

- The tavern?

"I don't want you guys to go there.

That's my hangout with my friends."

- I said, "Can you guys respect that?"

And you know what, I'm really sick of you getting so drunk and

being an a*s -- .

You're so different when you're sober from when you're drunk,

it's insane.

I think you have a serious drinking problem.

You're volatile, you know?

Like when you're drunk, we're like, "Oh,

what is he gonna do tonight?"

- No, and that's my fault, because a lot of things that

I've been upset about with my roommates,

I haven't come out and just said.

And I think what's really happen is the fact that,

during the day, I kind of walk around, you know,

with my head kind of down.

And then at night, I'm just pissed about what happens

and it just comes out.

And I do apologize, 'cause I am sorry.

I should have respected you.

The fact that it is your house.

I just-- - [unintelligible]

- [unintelligible] thank you for it.

- Okay.

- Remember that night we have that conversation and you were

like, "I need to learn how to see someone for who they are

instead of seeing color"?

When did that dawn on you, that that was something that you

wanted to try and do while you were here?

- When I talked to you when we were walking home,

and you told me your experiences.

Shavonda and I are learning more about each other.

She's really opened up my mind to some new ways

of seeing things.

Now, because of what she's talked about, my guard's down,

you know what I mean?

- SHAVONDA: It's okay to let your guard down.

- Down, you know what I mean? It's--

- LANDON: A lot of times you can learn a lot

when your guard is down. - Exactly.

- LANDON: Take a chance at getting hurt--

- And that's what--that's what I didn't wanna deal with.

I didn't wanna get hurt.

I'd rather be middle than get hurt.

- But I'll be honest, I didn't wanna hang out with you at all,

because I felt like you judge you.

But since we had that talk, I was like,

"I wouldn't mind hanging out with Karamo.

I'd ask him to go hang out now."

Because I wouldn't feel like you were expecting me to feel

oppressed with you.

I don't feel like the world is out to get me.

I don't feel like I have to have this guard up.

You know, we are humans, we are people.

And that's it.

- I feel like so disrespected by Mel.

You know, and the fact that she just--I don't feel like she

likes me at all.

- But she called you a cool, great guy.

But then she was tired--and she still is tired that when you get

drunk and you're crazy, that the next day it's like, "I'm sorry."

- I need to worry about like how I'm acting when I'm blacked

out, 'cause it worries me, and it worries my roommates.

- Apparently something happened at the door

that I don't know about.

But when you went downstairs, nothing happened.

You just started going off.

And then I went upstairs, M.J. was like, "He has a knife."

And I was like--came back downstairs,

you had a knife in your back pocket.

And you were like, "I'm gonna cut him."

Took a knife out of your pocket, took three more knifes out.

This time, you were waving them around like, " -- come do it,

do this and whatever."

I was like, "Uh, you know, put down the knives."

- LANDON: That's so unacceptable.

It just makes me sick to hear it.

- Landon is scared, Landon is worried about the effects his

drinking has had on people.

- I don't even know what to think, you know?

Like--holy [bleep].

- ♪

- [boat horn blasts]

- I'm just so sick of hurting my roommates and, you know,

feeling like a drunk idiot, you know?

- It sucks. - It's not me--

- It makes me not wanna hang out with you.

- I know, and that's what I'm scared about is that you

guys--like Shavonda's like, "I don't wanna go out with you

at night, I'm scared when you come home."

And that's not what I want.

- I'm scared when you come home, too.

- I know, no, I think everybody is.

So, I just have to end it, you know?

- Good. That's good.

- So, I'm just doing five drinks.

- Yeah, five drinks.

That's probably a good idea.

I think it's great that Landon's taking responsibility for his

actions and his problem with drinking.

And I think it's a very adult, mature move.

Well, you realizing it now.

And anything we can do, you know?

- No, I mean, you guys can do a lot just by talking to me.

Just be like, "Landon, what number are you on?"

- Yeah.

- You know, and just keep it in my mind that, "Okay,

I'm counting tonight."

Five then I'm done.

Five and then it's double water on rocks

for the rest of the night. - MELANIE: [laughs]

- Let's do that.

- LANDON: What? - MELANIE: One.

- I think we can help Landon by just really monitoring his

drinking and letting him know that we're there

and we care about him.

- It feels good for me that my roommates are behind me %.

- I'm very proud of myself that I can still have fun, um,

and then maintain my control too.

I don't need to be drunk.

I don't need to be drunk and hurt my roommates.

So I think this is a good way--I mean,

it's a good way to start it out.

And even better to start it out.

- I hope Landon will be able to get a hold of his drinking.

- We're all having to learn our limits.

And I think it's just taken Landon longer to learn his.
