02x08 - Bring Me the Head

Post by bunniefuu »

[bell tolls]

[thunder rumbles]

[somber music plays]

[Eddie exhales]

[Marco] I'm so sorry
for your loss, Edoardo.

[music fades]

[beeping]

[Eddie] You are currently connected
to three car batteries,

which are hooked up
to an electric fence unit.

The sort of thing you use to control, uh,

sheep, cattle,

that sort of thing.

So, what's it gonna be?

-[electricity crackles]
-[man groans]

-Just tell me who sent you.
-I don't f*cking know.

-[electricity crackles]
-[man groans]

-[Eddie] Who?
-[man] I have no idea who hires my boss.

[somber music plays]

It was Bobby, wasn't it? Tell me.

Say it! It was Bobby Glass, wasn't it?

It was Bobby… Bobby Glass!

[suspenseful classical music plays]

The man we have in mind is very reliable.

Logistics are in place. He should have
everything he needs by the end of the day.

Don't worry, Edoardo.

This time tomorrow,
Bobby Glass will be in hell.

All right?

[tense classical music plays]

[music fades]

So, what's this about midnight g*nf*re in
the ancient woodlands of Wiltshire, then?

To be honest, we weren't actually there
to witness the events.

Some of our twiggers were outside,
having a late-night smoke at the airfield.

It's part of our new HR drive.

When all of a sudden,
they start hearing g*nf*re.

Lots of it.

It was coming from the woods
on the Duke's estate.

I sent a couple of boys over
to take a look,

and they found a load of these.

Nine mils and two .43s.
There's been a battle in the woods.

Skid marks, blood, but no bodies.

All right. Well, here's what we do know.

The same night
as Bella's plane explodes in the sky,

someone unloads a f*ck-ton of weapons
on the Duke's estate.

He flies back home.

But he doesn't want to be seen,
doesn't answer any calls,

and doesn't want to talk to us.

Maybe you should pay him a visit.

I mean, to check if he's okay.

Easier said than done, Jimmy.

Words were exchanged at the wedding.

It's the Duke, sis.

He'll always have time for you, Susu.

Truss.

Trust is a virtue
that's currently in short supply.

I'll give it a whirl.

[crutches clank]

-[Eddie] Uh…
-[Nanny] Sorry to keep you waiting.

[Eddie] No, of course.

How's the leg?

[Nanny] Healing. Thank you.

[Eddie] Here, let me, uh…

[Nanny] Oh. Thank you.

We've known each other for a long time,
you and I.

And I appreciate the necessity

for your deception
about your criminal enterprise.

But this path you've gone down,
I… I don't know why or how it happened.

The truth is, I don't want to know.

It represents a risk that is unacceptable.

I love you, Eddie.

But my priority is my son and his mother,
and making sure they're safe.

Of course.

Which is why I spoke
to His Majesty this morning.

There's a cottage on the Sandringham
estate currently lying vacant.

No-fly zone. Royal Protection Command.

He said we could use it
for as long as we wanted.

Right. And how
did you frame the conversation?

[Nanny] I provided a suitable alibi.
I wanted to be closer for work.

Good.

You do realize

that your family are quite safe here.

You don't know how close we came.
They nearly took Tarquin.

Nanny.

Halstead is our ancestral home.

We have lived here for over 700 years.

Do you really think
that I would abandon it?

Tell me, what does Charlotte think?

She agrees with me. You wouldn't be here
if she didn't. And you want me to--

God knows why she wants to stay.

I mean, out of some kind
of misguided sense of familial loyalty

that's been hardwired into her DNA.

Well, maybe you should
listen to her, Nanny.

Mother knows best.

Not in this case. Mm-mm.

[tense music plays]

[Eddie] I'm sorry, Nanny,

but you'll leave

when I say you can leave.

Excuse me, sir.

We have a vehicle at the north gate.

It's Susie Glass.

Shall I ask them to send her up?

-Tell Andy I'll meet her halfway.
-Very good.

In fact, Geoffrey,

I'll tell him myself.

You all right, Andy?

Susie.

[music fades]

I heard about Bella.

[tense music resumes]

I'm so sorry.

Walk with me.

What happened?

Well, you know what happened.

I know about Bella.

I don't know anything else.

Who did this, Eddie?
Let's go f*cking destroy them.

I know it was your father.

The question is, were you involved or not?

Let me ask you something, Eddie.

Has your man up there
got his sights on me?

If it was us, would I be here now?

What would I have to gain from this?
What would anyone have to--

Don't f*cking lie to me!

Eddie, listen to me.

Even I thought
it could have been my father.

-It was Bobby. I know it was.
-[Susie] No.

[Eddie] Why not?

He bought your contract.

The 100 million you owe to Uncle Stan.
The morning of your wedding.

He owns your debt.

I don't like that.

It means he has more faith in you
than he does in me, but

my father is not interested
in k*lling you,

and he's not interested
in losing £100 million.

What the f*ck? Why would he do that?

I don't know, all right?
I have no f*cking idea, but

whatever history there might be
between you and my father,

there are a hundred million reasons
why he needs to keep you alive right now.

Look at me.

We didn't do this, okay?
I didn't do this to you.

[sniffs]

-[tense music plays]
-[Eddie] I wanna show you something.

[Susie] Where'd you find him?

In the woods.

Is he dead?

I hope not. Geoffrey, wake him up please.

[gasps]

If you're gonna k*ll me, k*ll me.
Just don't be boiling my bollocks again.

I'm a… I'm a soldier.
I… I was hired to do a job.

I don't know nothing
about no f*cking baby.

But you know who sent you, don't you?

[electricity crackles]

Uh… Uh, Bobby Glass.

Tell me, soldier.

Is it normal for you to meet the client
before an operation?

No. Not usually. But…
But this time, I… I… I met him.

-You met him?
-Yeah, I did. I met him.

What about his associates?
Were they there?

Uh, there's a daughter, Susie Glass.
Did you meet her?

Tell her what she wants to know.

I… I don't know, though. I can't tell you.

-Because I'm not… No!
-[Eddie] Geoffrey.

Susie Glass, yes, I met her!

I met her. I swear to God, I met her!

I met her. I f*cking met her!

I met her. I met her. She's a great girl,
man. She's got a great laugh.

[music fades]

[cell phone buzzes]

Your Grace. I hope you're not interrupting
your honeymoon on my account.

The honeymoon's over.

I need you to answer
a very simple question, yes or no.

Well, whilst I'm generally reluctant
to submit to such binary simplicity,

I can sense
a heightened imperative in your voice

and will, therefore, happily comply.

Did you sell my debt to Bobby
on the day of my wedding?

In a word,

yes.

[tense music plays]

[call end tone]

Someone's coming for Bobby.

[tense music builds]

[exhales]

Marco, we need to abort.

-Eddie, what is this?
-[Eddie] It wasn't Bobby.

You need to stand your man down.

Listen, Edoardo.

Once the man has been commissioned,
there is no stopping him.

[Susie] He's on his way to his sauna,
but I can't get hold of the screws.

I can get you through the door.
After that, you're on your own.

[guard] Wait!

Single file, please.

Eyes forward!

[dramatic music plays]

[Bobby groans]

[prisoner strains]

Come here, son. Give me the f*cking shiv!

[ragged breathing]

[prisoner grunts]

Buongiorno,

c**t.

-[shiv slices]
-[prisoner groans]

[grunts]

[shiv clatters]

[music fades]

[groans]

f*cking hell.

[breathes heavily]

Been a long time since I've, uh,

done something like that.

Just to be clear…

you don't own me.

[door opens]

[tense music plays]

[door closes]

[chuckles]

[Susie] There you go, Dad. Good as new.

Shame the same can't be said
for the other guy.

Yeah, well, he didn't do it
on his own, did he?

I mean, he must have had some help
to get the f*cking banger in.

Where were the screws?

Where was f*cking Georgie?

Don't worry about Georgie. He's straight.
They found a naughty way to keep him busy.

Had a word with the governor.
He's straightening things out.

Well, he wants to get
his f*cking finger out

because there'll be
no more brown envelopes.

-What are you like, eh?
-What?

Shivving fellow inmates,
bribing prison officials,

sinking a small fortune into a man who
just hired someone to try and k*ll you.

No, no, no, no.
See, the Duke, he's got principles.

I think I might've just
underestimated him, that's all.

He's hot-headed, Dad.

His wife's dead.

Yeah, I can appreciate that.

But as far as an investment goes,
he's an unstable stock to get into.

No, I'm buying low, babe.

You see, he's evolving as a human being.

Transforming, transmogrifying
in front of our very eyes.

You see, I feel that he's got something.

What, so breaking both his legs
and leaving him to crawl out of the woods

was, what,
part of his spiritual development?

Yeah.

What if he's evolving
into something volatile?

Like what?

I don't know. Nitroglycerin.

We need him.

And he f*cking needs us.

[door opens]

[Eddie] Thanks for coming to see me,
Mr. Johnston.

When we spoke,
I detected a strain in your voice.

I'm sorry, Your Grace.
I hadn't heard about your loss.

I'd like to offer my condolences.

Drink?

Oh, I'll stick with my tea.

Well, I'm sorry for the quality of my tea.
Somebody shot my butler.

Terrible when that happens.
But the tea is perfectly adequate.

[Eddie] Thank you.

And I assume you met my security detail.

It appears I'm being f*cked
from every angle at the moment.

I should have informed you of my intention
to sell your debt to Bobby Glass.

Yes, you should have.

I apologize for the timing.

You do realize

that I was gonna repay you with interest?

Well, that was never in doubt.

Let me explain my rationale.

When Jesus ventured into the wilderness,

fasting 40 days and 40 nights
in isolation,

he was thrice tested by the adversary.

The first test was tempting Jesus
to quell his hunger

by using his internal powers
to turn stone into bread.

His refusal to use his power

was a symbol of him rejecting
the material world over the spiritual.

Just like you, Your Grace.

You were offered the superficial benefits

of taking Bobby Glass's money,
but you refused.

And you took matters into your own hands.

For the second temptation,
the adversary urged Jesus

to jump off the pinnacle of a temple
to force intervention from God.

Jesus chose to trust himself,

knowing his internal spiritual engine
could push him through the wilderness.

Just like you chose
to forge your own path,

moving away from the familiar protection
of Bobby Glass and into the unknown.

The final test is
the one you're yet to face.

The adversary offered him
the world and everything in it,

if he'd only bow down
and worship only him.

Your debt to Bobby forces you to choose

between bowing to an external authority

or becoming a self-generating participant.

Jesus rejected the devil

and emerged from the wilderness
The King of Kings,

ready to grant salvation to the world.

I'm not looking
to grant anyone salvation, Mr. Johnston.

I just wanna find out
who k*lled my f*cking wife.

And you will.

Your Grace,
diamonds are formed under pressure,

and kings are anointed
as an antidote to chaos.

The reason I sold your debt

was because
you've yet to confront your demons,

your doubt that you can personify
the ultimate authority.

I was never in this for the quick buck.

I was always in it
for the long haul, Your Grace.

Thank you for taking the time.

I have other things to attend to.

Of course.

Like the great man said,

"When going through hell, keep going."

[somber music plays]

[music fades]

[cell phone dials]

[Sabrina] Halstead Manor.

Hi, Mum, it's me. It's, um… It's Freddy.

[Sabrina] Oh, Freddy darling.

[exhales]

How are you?

Oh, I'm fine, really. I'm… I'm… I'm just…
I'm really… really just really fine. Um…

Except I had a bit
of a disturbing dream last night,

and, uh, well, I just wanted to check
that everybody was okay.

Uh…

Yes, darling, we are.

Really?

Oh, that's good. Um…

Are you sure, though?
It was just a… It was a…

It was an incredibly vivid dream.

I mean, it was more
of a nightmare, really, and, uh…

I don't know.

[somber music plays]

Well, um…

Eddie's wife, Bella.

Yeah, there… there was
a… a terrible accident.

A… And we've lost her.

She's dead, Freddy.

[music fades]

-[Eddie] Geoffrey.
-[Geoff] Sir?

[Eddie] Have we made any progress
with our man?

[Geoff] Yeah, he's started talking,
Your Grace.

Seems the stick technique
didn't work too well,

so, uh, we tried the carrot approach,

which has yielded some good results.

Said he has a number to leave a message
to say if anything went wrong.

Has he spoken to them
since his whole team were obliterated

by a gamekeeper
and a member of the Royal Guard?

Apparently not.

So as far as the client is aware,
the operation never failed.

But it did fail, sir.

Well, who's to say? Come on.

[cell phone dials]

This is Bravo, team leader.

Sunny skies.

Not that I have you to thank.
You sent us into a shitstorm.

They were waiting for us.

They k*lled the whole team.

But I took cover and I went back later.

I… I've got the package now.

The child.

But to get it,
you need to meet me with all the money.

Everyone's money.

All my colleagues are dead.
I'm not settling for less.

[somber music plays]

And if he buys it, I mean, you're…

you're gonna let me go, right?

If it works.

[cell phone buzzes]

-[laughs] He believed me.
-[cell phone buzzes]

Thank Christ for that, man. [sighs]

We still good?

Sorry about the mess, Geoffrey.

[Geoff] Not to worry, sir.
I'll get this cleaned up.

[Susie] I know you're in pain, Eddie.

The price of that pain means
you can't think straight right now.

You're looking for resolutions
where they cannot be found.

What was your plan?

To entice an experienced team

of ex-military militia
into a trap of your design?

You think these cunning and capable
w*r-torn rats would be deceived

by some irresistible cheese
left in the most conspicuous of traps,

monitored by a bunch of criminals
and an ex-military sn*per?

I get it, Eddie. I really do.

But it was never gonna work.

Even if they did show up,

they'd know what they were walking into
and would act accordingly.

[tense music plays]

And then what?

You turn the streets of London
into a Ukrainian w*r zone?

Only serving to stir the cauldron
of self-destructive chaos

that consumes you.

Someone has to die, Susie.

[Susie] Ten of their men have been k*lled.

The reality is, they'd be too cautious
to come forward,

having had their bumholes handed to them
on their previous ventures.

I know you want vengeance,
and I'll help you find it.

-But you need time to settle.
-Okay.

That's enough.

We'll find them, Eddie.

Together.

Come on.

[music fades]

[knocking on door]

Chuckles. I was just coming to find you.

Eddie, Nanny and I
are going to go to Sandringham.

I pleaded with him to stay, but

he won't listen.

It'll only be for a couple of weeks.

[Eddie] I see.

Are you any closer
to figuring out who's behind all this?

Not yet.

You will find them, though, won't you?

[Eddie] Mm.

And when you do,

you'll make them pay?

Come here.

[somber classical music plays]

You look after yourself.

You look after my godson.

No, I'm serious, Eddie.

All of this, it's…

it's only temporary.

I'm coming back.

I'm not scared.

I'm with you.

[Sabrina] It'll be sad seeing
Charly and Nanny go to Sandringham.

[music fades]

I mean, they deserve a bit
of peace and quiet after

everything.

And the grounds, oh my God.

They're so lovely.
You know, we should go and visit them.

-Freddy called today.
-[Eddie] Mm-hmm.

-I told him what had happened.
-[Eddie] Mm.

[Sabrina] He seemed
really cut up about it.

Sorry?

-What did you say?
-[Sabrina] What?

I said that he seemed
very cut up about it.

Why was he phoning?

He doesn't usually call.

It was a bit spooky, actually.

He said he'd had this dream
and wanted to know

if something terrible
had happened to Tarquin.

And what did he say?

Just that he'd had this dream
and that it felt very real.

He wanted to check that everyone was okay.

And did you tell him we were?

[tense music plays]

-Yes.
-Tell me exactly what you said.

[Sabrina] I said something happened,
but we're all okay.

Well, apart from Bella.

-[gasps]
-I need you to be incredibly clear.

Did you tell him Tarquin was okay?

[Sabrina] Yes, I did.

Where's the wedding?

Uh, Lake Maggiore.

Ooh, lovely. Honeymoon?

A couple of lakes to the north.

Bella's insistent
on flying us there by seaplane.

A flying Italian countess.

[chuckles]

[cutlery clatters]

[Freddy] And remember this.

Esau did forgive Jacob in the end, Edward.

But only after he battled
with the Angel of the Lord.

[tense music plays]

[Gospel John] "How long
wilt thou sleep, O sluggard?"

"When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?"

"Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to sleep."

"So shall thy poverty come
as one that travelleth."

"And thy want as an armed man."

It was Freddy.

You really think
he'd do something this extreme?

Not on his own, no.

[Gospel John] "A wicked man
walketh with a froward mouth."

"He winketh his eyes,
he speaketh with his feet,

he teacheth with his fingers."

"He deviseth mischief continually,

therefore shall
his calamity come suddenly."

"Suddenly shall he be
broken without remedy."

Repent ye such grievous sin, O brothers,

and ye shall receive
the limitless blessings

of God, the Almighty Father.

Amen.

-[men] Amen.
-[music stops]

Maxie.

Right.

We've just had an approach
from a major Peruvian producer.

He's coming to England tomorrow
and wants to meet.

When you say major?

I mean Carlos Vargas, major.

"Moreover, the word of the Lord
came to me saying…"

What does Carlos Vargas want from us?

[Errol] They say
he's heard good things about you.

We've had it confirmed.
It's definitely him.

"Will you judge?"

"Will you judge the bloody city?"

Set it up, Errol.

But let's be cautious.

"And that our time may come."

[somber music plays]

[man] This way.

[Gospel John] Moody gaff.

Very moody.

Just you two. The rest can stay here.

[airplane engine roars]

Mr. Vargas, it's a great pleasure
to welcome you to England.

It's good to meet you, Mr. Dixon.

[music stops]

In actual fact, we're not in England.

This is a bonded warehouse.

A no-man's land.

Because goods can be stored
without the need to pay any duty.

Any kind of goods.

Must have its uses.

[Vargas] It certainly does.

I appreciate you coming to meet me.

This is a serious business,

a cutthroat world we operate in,

and it's good to put a face to a name.

I've heard great stories
about you, Mr. Vargas.

[Vargas] I've also heard
stories about you, John.

Some of them not so great.

Such as…

[Gospel John] Such as?

[Vargas] Planes crashing, wives dying,

kidnap of a one-year-old baby.

We got some sort of a problem here,
Mr. Vargarse?

Yes.

We've got a problem.

[g*nf*re]

[tense music plays]

[suspenseful music plays]

[g*nsh*t]

-Thank you, Mr. Vargas.
-Of course.

Eddie, I think there's been
some kind of misunderstanding here, mate.

-Sit down, please, Errol.
-[Errol] Look, Eddie.

I don't know
what you think we've done, but--

[music fades]

Told you to sit down.

Carlos and I will leave you to it, then,
unless there's anything else you need?

Thank you.

[Gospel John] That's not the first time
I've seen a brother cut down before me.

Why did you do it, John?

[somber music plays]

Do you know the story of Jacob and Esau?

Jacob stole Esau's birthright,
just like you stole my brother.

I'm not interested in that.
I wanna know why you k*lled my wife.

Before he was able to fulfil his destiny,

Jacob had to wrestle
with the Angel of the Lord.

You are not an Angel of the Lord.

You're a Liverpudlian coke dealer
with delusions of grandeur.

That's where you're wrong.

See, I was doing God's work.
It was nothing personal.

Well, it felt pretty personal to me.

What you need to understand is
that I had a brother,

but I lost him.

God then brought me Freddy

so that I could have back
what had been taken from me.

And then it was my turn to help Freddy
to reclaim what was taken from him.

[scoffs]

[Eddie] So that's what this was about.

The house and the title.

And the drug empire.

What about the child?

We were never gonna hurt the baby.

We just wanted to make sure
that the estate didn't go to him.

There are two members of our community
who recently lost a child,

stolen from them by Satan.

They would have provided a loving home
for the youngster,

away from the bitter dispute
between you and your brother.

There was never a dispute.
My brother is an addict.

He is not sound of mind.

He sees things more clearly
than you do, Eddie.

He gave me the lowdown.

It should all have been his.

And by his,

you mean yours.

And by his,

I mean his.

You are also an addict, John,
but your dependency makes you think

you work for the creator
of the bloody universe.

Look into your heart, Eddie.

Tell me this isn't God's will.

You wanna look into my heart?

Are you sure about that?

[music fades]

-Hey, Eddie.
-[Eddie] Thank you.

All done?

Not yet.

We can take over from now if you'd rather.

A bit of professional distance
has its advantages.

No. I've made other arrangements.

[suspenseful classical music plays]

[Gospel John] O Lord,
who hast appointed a time

to every purpose under heaven,

let us cry out
for he whose heart is blighted with rot

and lead him to concord
as betwixt Jacob and Esau.

Darling, listen to me,
'cause I'm only gonna say this once.

Whatever Freddy may have done,
he is still your brother.

I know he… he is… he's vulnerable.

He always has been.

God, I'd hate you
to do something you might regret.

Oh, my darling.

I know what you've been through.

I love you so much.

But you are at a crossroads.

Now, one way, it leads to
you losing everything, including yourself.

I'm so sorry, darling boy.

The other path,
you get to keep your family.

So, which will it be, Eddie? Hm?

Vengeance?

Or forgiveness?

-Shall we go in? Get a cup of tea.
-No, no.

I'd rather go for a walk.
You know, get some fresh air first.

-I'll do what needs to be done.
-No.

I am your mother,
and you will do what is right.

What is right?

You really expect me
to forgive him for what he's done?

[Freddy] I don't know.
I've been happy here.

Whole place was owned
by the uncle of George IV.

[Freddy talks indistinctly]

I don't recognize you, Eddie.

[Freddy talks indistinctly]

You all right?

[music stops]

[tense music plays]

I know what you did, Freddy.

[Freddy] No.

I mean, know what?
What are you… What do you mean?

I know what you did.

[Freddy] Eddie, we've been here before.

Whatever it is, I promise you,
it wasn't me this time.

I've been here. I've been here.

I'm aware I have not been
the best brother in the past,

but whatever… What do you know? What?

[Freddy groans]

-Edward, I--
-[Eddie grunts]

f*cking hell!

Jesus Christ, Eddie!

My wife!

My f*cking wife!

[Freddy] Oh f*ck!

[Eddie] Get the f*ck up! Get up!

f*ck you!

I f*cking hate you!

[Freddy groans]

f*ck!

My wife!

[Eddie breathes heavily]

Get the f*ck up!

Stop it, Edward!

-Come here! Get up!
-[Freddy wails]

[Eddie] Come here!

Come! f*cking come!

[Freddy whimpers]

[Eddie grunts]

[breathes heavily]

Ah…

Oh no, no, no, no.

[Freddy whimpers]

Oh Lord, please, please,
please, please, please.

I don't wanna die, Eddie.
I don't wanna die. I don't want to.

-Someone's got to die, Freddy.
-[whimpers]

Someone's gotta die.

Oh no, please, I don't want to die.
I don't want to die!

[music fades]

[suspenseful music plays]

-Oh no.
-Come on.
