# Bing-bong, ding-dong. #
A new year is about to begin.
# Dong. #
Let's forget the past
and focus on the future.
# Dong. #
A future full of sewing celebrities
making festive themed garments!
Do you want to help me
with the ding-dongs?
No dongs, please, Sara.
It's 8:00 in the morning.
ALL: Welcome to the New Year
Sewing Bee Extravaganza!
In this New Year special...
Oh, yeah!
..four celebrity sewers...
Yes, yes, yes, yes!
..ring in 2022...
SHE LAUGHS
..with "armless" fun
in the pattern...
It's like sexy dandruff.
..give old glad rags new life
in a teeny transformation...
No children were harmed
in the making...
..and make a meal of fancy dress...
Wee bit of parsley on top.
..in the made-to-measure.
Making our mouths water.
But when the clock strikes 12...
Bong!
..who'll be left with a bad taste
in their mouth?
Oh!
And who'll be having a banger?
I'm a sausage!
Take me to the party!
# So come on, let me
entertain you... #
Joining us for the New Year fun
in Leeds are...
Ooh, a sleigh! Sleigh!
Slay!
..Drag Queen of Scots
Lawrence Chaney...
I've been sewing since I was
eight years old.
I started with cuddly toys,
and then immediately moved on to
catsuits and fur coats.
..journalist and Newsnight
presenter Kirsty Wark...
Might just spend the whole
festive season here!
..who forged her formidable
reputation grilling the Iron Lady...
I think I was more prepared
for Margaret Thatcher
than I am for the
Great British Sewing Bee.
Oh... Oh, a pedal.
I actually got a sewing machine
for my 21st birthday,
but I haven't sewn for
years and years and years,
and that's going to be terrifying.
..singer songwriter with legendary
pop group Steps, Claire Richards...
My ideal New Year's would probably
be just chilling on the sofa,
watching the fireworks at midnight,
and then going to bed.
This is going to be very different,
and there's no wine!
..and Kiwi comedian, writer
and actor Rose Matafeo.
My mum taught me how to sew
when I was younger.
Her mother taught her how to sew.
And I'm really hoping that
some sort of spirit of my ancestors
is going to come to me
during the Sewing Bee
and make me good at sewing again.
That's the perfect soundbite
to just cut to me struggling!
Get ready for impact!
LAUGHTER
Welcome, New Year sewers.
Come forward.
ALL: Yeah! Yeah!
Welcome to the Sewing Bee.
So a midnight kiss is traditional
at New Year.
And in case you're worried about the
Covid safety of such a practice,
we are all tested and in a bubble,
so kiss away
to your hearts' content,
as long as you have your
partners' express permission.
Esme, it's your turn
with the glad tidings now,
by which I mean introducing
the pattern challenge.
Here we go.
Oh, my goodness.
One for you.
Oh, thank you very much.
One for you. Thank you.
One for you.
And...
LAUGHTER
..you!
Right, what we've got
is a festive waistcoat.
It's got a lining,
so it's got to be bagged out.
Bagged out? Bagged out?
That's not a term I know.
Bagged out? Oh, God...
We've given you a selection
of fancy, fun fabrics,
and the haberdashery is full of
embellishments,
so you can make these waistcoats
truly unique.
This kind of jolly attire is popular
with teddy bears, magicians
and uncles with a real
Noel Edmonds vibe.
You have two hours
for this challenge
and your time starts now.
# You gotta speed it up
LAUGHTER
# And then you gotta
slow it down... #
KIRSTY: What do I want?
LAWRENCE: Right, right...
Festive, festive...
As well as a fantastically
festive fabric...
Oh, look over there!
# Making your mind up... #
LAWRENCE HISSES
ROSE LAUGHS
g*dd*mn it!
..our celebs need to choose
an equally eye-catching lining
that will combine to create
a fabulous waistcoat...
I just need to make a decision.
I need to make a decision.
..that stands out loud and proud
in any New Year crowd.
Can't say any of my family have ever
worn a festive waistcoat.
They kind of remind me of teachers.
They wear them, don't they,
at Christmas?
I've gone for a candy cane unicorn
with a bit of silver.
I can't resist a unicorn.
ROSE: I've picked, like, a cotton,
and then this is kind of like
a harder tweed.
I think this is quite festive,
you know, but not too over the top.
KIRSTY: I've gone sausage dogs,
and I've gone for
a really bright yellow lining
because yellow is about optimism.
We want an optimistic start
to the year.
I've never worn a waistcoat.
I don't dress up out of drag,
really.
My go-to snazzy outfit,
when I'm going out and I want to
impress all the fellas...
..joggy bottoms
and a hat.
And that's why I'm single!
So there's no occasion that wouldn't
be livened up
by a festive waistcoat, is there?
Halloween, Christmas,
an enemy's wedding...
Tell me why you chose it.
I think it is a good
introduction to sewing,
and it's going to test their ability
to sew accurately.
Traditionally, a man's waistcoat
would have fabric on the front
and two layers of lining
on the back.
Lots of scope for variation,
but they need to be able to sew them
together nicely and press them well,
cos we want to see
nice, crisp edges.
So where might they go wrong
with this?
We've asked them to bag it out,
so they could get in
a right old muddle.
What is bagging out?
You sew it all together,
inside out. Yeah.
And you leave a hole,
then you pull it through the hole.
And then, ta-da! It's finished.
It makes all the seams and raw edges
go on the inside.
But sewing things inside out
like that,
they might get a little bit confused
about what they're attaching
to what.
If they don't follow the pattern,
they could really come unstuck.
OK, this is what they always
do on these shows.
They never read the instructions.
Just read the instructions...
Oh, gosh.
Goodness gracious me.
I've got no idea what I'm doing.
I've never worked with a pattern
before.
I'm starting to think I've
made a massive mistake!
First step's cutting out.
So even if you don't know
what to do, cut everything out.
I have worked with patterns before.
I wouldn't say they always
go terribly well,
but we'll see.
Get these out of here.
What are these for? Sticks...
I'm a terrible, slapdash person,
so what I want to do is
demonstrate that I actually can
at least cut out half decently.
What comes next, I'm not sure.
I'm used to making for
this shape,
so this is very different.
Pray for me!
The festive waistcoat is comprised
of six pattern pieces,
three for the lining
and three for the outside.
To start, the front pieces
are paired right sides together
and joined along the arm holes,
front and bottom edges.
They're turned inside out
and placed on top of the
back lining piece, front side up.
The outer back piece is then
pinned on top,
sandwiching the front panels.
The two backs are sewn together,
catching the front panels
in at the side and shoulder seams.
The waistcoat is then bagged out
through the gap,
the hole hand-stitched shut
and embellishments added
for a personal touch.
Good morning, Claire.
Good morning.
How are you feeling? Ah!
I don't know.
I'm a bit nervous.
Actually, I'm very nervous.
Have you made anything before?
I've never made clothing.
I'm more crafty than...
More crafty than sew-y?
..than sew-y, yeah, I would say. OK.
So this is the outer fabric? Yeah.
Is that your lining?
Yeah, this is my lining.
I mean, I know it's not the same,
it's a bit thinner,
but it's nice and shiny.
Very shiny.
I mean, it's festive.
It's festive, but...
..I mean, it's not the
simplest thing to sew.
It will look fabulous. Yes.
Best of luck. Thanks!
Ah!
OK.
I'm not going back over there
cos I'll just confuse myself.
What will be will be.
Right, OK, so left front
and right front.
Now we're getting somewhere.
Once they've cut out all their
fabric pieces,
our celebs are ready to
commence construction.
ROSE: "With your front pieces,
"place them right sides together
and pin down the front edges.
"Along the bottom and around the
arm holes, stitch seams together."
I'm trying to, like, not rush it,
but I'm...like, my hands
are shaky!
I'm going to start sewing
and see what happens.
Bing, bang!
Oh, let's go for it.
Hoping for the best.
I'm just following very carefully
the pattern.
Kirsty. Yes-y?
Are you having fun?
Yes. You are?
I actually am.
Usually, for me, a novelty waistcoat
would be a real warning about a man,
do you not think?
Right, well, what about Patrick?
SARA LAUGHS
I mean, that must be a real warning!
I walked... I walked into that one!
That's why you're a good
interviewer.
So what's your sewing background?
My mother and my grandmother
made clothes,
and I sort of, once upon a time,
made clothes.
So why did you stop?
Just cos life got in the way.
Of course, you had to interview
politicians.
Yeah, and you can't really say,
"I've just got...
"I can't do that because I've
actually got this blouse to finish."
Yeah.
Or maybe it would be a really
good technique,
so you'd look like,
"Oh, I'm just a homely lady,
"just darning this cushion.
"Why did you lie about
your expenses?"
"You've not put enough money
into sewing in the economy."
Well, that's actually probably true.
God, you can really turn it on,
can't you, Kirsty? Yeah, afraid so.
When you said that, I was like,
"I'm so sorry. Have my money!"
THEY LAUGH
OK. That's one front done.
Good morning, Lawrence.
Good morning.
So you've done this before? Yeah.
You look like you're just confident
in this. Yeah...
And I'm not suggesting you
shouldn't be.
Something I've learned from doing
competitions before is just, like...
..don't overthink it and just,
like, fire it out, you know?
Fire it out. There we go. Yeah.
That's... That's the motto
we live by on Sewing Bee. Yes!
"Just fire it out." Yeah.
So I've got my head around this bit
and I've calmed down a little bit.
ROSE: I think I understand
what I'm supposed to do now.
Rose! Hello, Sara. How's it going?
Well, you know,
I think I'm representing
the comedians contingent.
So you need to come in strong
and then fail miserably.
Fail miserably. Yeah.
I was inspired by your efforts
in Sewing Bee.
Well, I really arrogantly thought
it would all work itself out
in the end. Exactly!
And I was like, "Yeah, I've seen
TV before.
"You always think it's going to
go badly and it ends up fine."
And then I had a rude awakening
of, like,
those people are actually
good at those things.
I know! It's horrible.
MUSIC: Take Me Out
by Franz Ferdinand
OK, so I've got two pieces here.
I think it'll be fine!
I'm pressing, just to get this
to be really neat.
It's meant to look sharp,
isn't it, a waistcoat?
My God!
I can't press that.
The silver fabric melts
when you put heat on it.
Oh! I've got an annoying hole.
What a silly mistake, Rose.
I'll cover that with
an embellishment.
If I cover it, they'd better not
spot it because then
I know someone's tipped them off
and I'm coming for you.
I'm meeting you in the car park.
Bong! Bong!
You are halfway through.
Good lord.
Surely not.
"Shirley No'!"
That's a great drag name.
Shirley Not!
With their front panels finished...
Right, the fronts are quite neat.
So let's get the next bit ready.
..the celebs now need to tackle
the most taxing part
of the challenge - bagging out.
"With one of your waistcoat backs,
"place on the cutting table
right side up."
"Now put your front pieces
right side up,
"placing them matching
the shoulder seams and side seam."
So like that.
This is weird.
"Now place the other piece on top
"so you sandwich the front piece
between the backs."
Now wait a minute.
This is confusing me.
Think big sandwich.
Big sandwich. Big sandwich.
I'm not quite sure if
I've done this right or wrong.
I've got a bit much fabric here.
I pinned this very poorly.
I need to sew the sandwich together
so it, like, traps the front pieces.
Shoulder seams and side seam.
Right. Let's start.
Fail to catch in their fronts
to their backs as they sew...
I'm doing this in bits
because it's way too complicated
to do it all the way round.
..and they'll end up
with unwanted holes.
It's very stressful.
I really don't want to mess it up,
but this keeps slipping around.
Or worse still, attach them
in the wrong places...
Don't like armholes.
I'm scared that I'm going to sew
something I shouldn't.
..and their waistcoat
will be unwearable.
Oh!
God.
OK, right. We turn it inside out.
This is possibly
the most important step.
Whether it worked or not,
leaves a lot to be desired.
# h*, h*, h*, it's magic... #
Oh, my God. Oh, my God!
Yes!
I think I made a waistcoat!
Oh, yeah!
Shall I try it on?
Oh, no.
This really does
look like a magician's waistcoat!
Something is wrong.
I've got a cape.
I have got a cape.
I think I've sewed up my arm holes.
How did I do that?
Bong! Bong!
Only half an hour left on the clock.
Get out.
I can't fix it. I've just got
to make it look fabulous.
Oh, no, it's not caught there.
Damn it.
Oh, that's annoying.
This got caught, but
I'll just snip that real close.
There's a little bit there,
that is just messy. Yeah.
But it's good when you go...
..you know, when you lean back
and squint, you don't notice it.
That's how it would be at a party.
Your arms are covered...
If anyone came up to you down here,
you'd go, "Excuse me, Brian,
this is personal space."
Yeah, personal space, everyone?
OK, so I've got to sew
the bottom together.
Once the hole to bag out
is closed...
I've got to stitch it, like, hand
sew it without you seeing the
stitch.
I always just tuck my hole away.
Right, goodbye, hole.
Right, I'm going to
get my embellishments.
..our celebs need to finish
their waistcoats
with flourishes of festive bling.
OK. We'll have a few jingle bells.
What can I do? What can I do?
We're going to have a big bow.
I'm going to hand sew some bells.
I need to cover this hole.
I would like to do
something on the shoulder.
I want something jazzy.
I want to get ba*ls all
the same colours as the dogs.
Anything to hide the disgrace
that it's a cape.
Where's the...?
What have you done?
I don't know what
you're talking about, Sara.
I think what's great about it
is you can walk into the party,
get the effect of the coat
and then just be like,
shrug it off your shoulders.
Now it's party time.
Ten minutes.
Oh, my good God!
Rose, this is a bad idea.
Maybe I should just leave it.
So I'm glueing everything
onto the shoulders.
I just hope these things do stick.
Maybe I could just, like,
do a weird sort of thing
where I just do, like, a top seam,
and then just tuck this hole
and carefully hide it.
I'm just doing a cheeky
little bells at the bottom here.
You've got to hear
a waistcoat coming.
OK, this is a disaster.
It's done nothing, really.
This is just rustic stuff.
It's cute,
but I need this glue to dry.
THROUGH CLENCHED TEETH:
They've got glue.
Where's the glue?
Five minutes!
Yes. Yes, yes, yes!
Put angels all over it.
Hopefully, this covers this hole.
It's quite sophisticated. I thought
that was going to be the outside.
So you've got indoors holly
berries...
It's reversible! It's reversible?
That's what I should have said.
You can still say it.
BELLS JINGLE
Oh, my word.
I need a smaller mannequin.
One minute!
Oh, my God.
Can't get the needle through!
This is a child's cape.
I've got so many questions
about this kid.
Do you? Good. I feel like he's
prince of a little-known country.
He is prince of
a little-known country.
And he's only just
heard of Christmas.
This is what I'd wear to
a Christmas court appearance.
I mean, it's cute if you're in Abba.
Needles up, revellers.
That's your time.
Bring those gents forward
as if they're strutting confidently
onto the dance floor as
The Final Countdown comes on.
My God, look at that!
How did I do that?
# It's the final countdown... #
Three festive waistcoats
and a small child's cape
fashioned from scratch
in just two hours.
# It's the final countdown... #
I think it's incredibly nicely sewn.
The front edge looks really crisp.
It's very well pressed.
You've got two
really lovely even points.
But there's a couple of things.
We have a raw edge
on the back armhole.
Yeah. And you didn't sew it up
where it's bagged out. Yes.
But I love the old bells.
It's like sexy dandruff.
Very. It's very!
I wish I had a bit of dandruff like
that. Well, I'll give you some.
# Look into his angel eyes
# One look and
you're hypnotised... #
Well, let's start with
the positive bits. Um...
It's fully assembled. Yeah.
It definitely looks
like a waistcoat. Mm.
You've also got
a line of top stitching.
I've done something interesting
there. Isn't it interesting?
Are we calling it an embellishment?
That's officially an embellishment.
OK.
Traditionally, I think you would use
the lighter weight fabric
on the inside, and you would
probably put the tweed
on the outside.
It's fully reversible.
Why don't you reverse it?
I thought that was
just a boring side.
But you chose the fabric.
Yeah, that's a good point.
I do know why
you had it the other way round,
because we've got the little tuck.
Yeah. We've got raw edges.
But the other side, Esme, you've got
to check out the other side.
It's bangin'. Turn it round...
Yeah. ..to the fun side.
Don't, don't, no, don't, you know...
Oh. What have you found?
A little hole.
If I hadn't been poking around...
Who pokes around a waistcoat?
Me. g*dd*mn it!
Yeah, yeah. Fair enough.
# See the light on your face
# Let it shine,
just let it shine... #
It looks very jolly
and very festive.
I think the choice of fabric for
the front has worked really nicely,
but you've made life really
difficult with this foiled fabric.
It's pretty near impossible
to press it.
It's meant that
all these seams are really bouncy.
Yeah. But I think the sewing
is pretty neat and accurate.
You have closed up the gap
where you've pulled it through.
And, actually, I do like the
silver,
but it has got a lot of problems.
We've got a hole on that side seam.
It's not sewn in. But you did give
yourself a really hard task.
I can't resist shiny.
I'm in Steps. I mean...
# Pretty little one, you look good
# Pretty little one, you look fine
(So fine)
# Pretty little one,
say you will be mine... #
I love this.
I love the colours.
I love your decorations,
but it isn't a waistcoat.
I know, but it's New Year.
Had you had a few before
you sewed it up? I'd had a few!
I mean, I thought
it was all going so well.
And then I'd no armholes,
but I turned it to my advantage.
Yes, and actually the front edge,
you have sewn it quite nicely.
You've sewn your embellishments on.
It does have a nice little jingle.
You have done your very best to...
Zhuzh it. ..zhuzh it.
And you can clearly sew.
But it ain't a waistcoat.
There we are, that's the final word.
Well done, Kirsty. Thank you.
Esme and Patrick will now rank
the festive waistcoats
from natty to batty.
Fourth place, it's Kirsty.
As much as we adored it,
it just wasn't a waistcoat.
In third place...
..Rose. I don't want to hear it.
Little hole in the front.
The shoulders didn't match.
Look at that.
How is that third place?
That's actually genuinely nice.
Well, maybe have a long, hard think
about what you've decided.
In second place...
..it's Claire.
Very neatly sewn at the front,
just that silver fabric
was really tricky to sew with. Yeah.
I wonder who's in first place.
Lawrence... Yay!
Very nicely sewn.
And I loved your decoration.
If your New Year's resolution
was to blow the judges' minds,
then mission accomplished.
Go and have a lovely break now,
and we'll see you back here
for the transformation.
I am so happy.
What is going on?
Do you know,
I could maybe see myself
making a festive waistcoat
from now on.
Maybe I'll sell them - Lawrence's
Swap Shop or something? Who knows?
It was a bit scary.
Felt like I was at school.
I don't even feel relieved.
I just...
A bit like that. Shellshocked.
I think you read the instructions
upside down.
Clearly!
I didn't make a waistcoat.
That's a fair position.
I don't think I'll be
wearing my cape on Newsnight,
unless it's an invisibility cape
and I want to disappear.
I don't want to make an enemy
of Esme but when this goes out,
they'll really regret
the decision they've made.
That sounds vaguely threatening,
doesn't it?
Yeah, but I stand by it. Yeah.
The next festive challenge
focuses on a younger partygoer,
but will be anything but
child's play for our celebs.
You're back. Nearly all of my
New Year's wishes have come true.
Only one more. Mmm...
Allow me to introduce
Mini Patrick and Esme.
We're going to be needing
their very specialised expertise
for the transformation.
This is when you take something
plain and boring and make it
much more attractive, like any man
after a bottle of champagne.
Patrick, tell us more.
One in five outfits
bought for a Christmas party
never gets worn again,
so we're giving you
all of last year's party dresses.
We want you to give
two frocks a second chance
and turn them into an outfit for
a child for a Christmas party.
Patrick, Esme and their bite-sized
versions will be judging
without knowing who has done what.
Off you go. Off we go.
This way.
Do you want to hold my hand?
Aww!
You have 90 minutes
and your time starts now.
# We are young, we run free... #
Quick, quick, quick!
Ah!
Oh, my Lord...
This is beautiful.
I don't want to cut this up.
This is like Pretty in Pink
when she makes that awful dress
from two good dresses.
Shiny or sparkly...
Oh, bit of Lurex! Oh! Mmm, mmm!
..the two forgotten festive
frocks our celebs choose...
I don't know whether to go all pink.
..should combine to make
dazzling new glad rags
fit for the wildest party child.
I've made kids' outfits before,
but normally for, like, school
because it was Egyptian Day
or something like that.
Bit easier.
I've never made an outfit
this small before.
I'm looking forward to finally
conserving fabric, you know?
# Feel all right... #
Turning unwanted dresses
into children's clothes,
it's something people used to
do routinely, and we've just
sort of forgotten about doing.
We've got a fantastic selection
of fabrics -
there's sparkly ones,
there's brocades, the satins.
We're looking for things that
go together and then, in a way,
it's going to be the trims
and the embellishments
that will make it different.
Yeah, I mean, it's a festive party
outfit. It needs to have a bit
of pizzazz, but it also needs
to be robust enough that
a child would be able to wear it.
What's that game on chairs?
Musical chairs? Yes. Musical chairs!
Is that what children play
at parties these days?
Well, these days I don't know.
My nephews just tend to
run around battering each other
with lightsabers.
I chose these two because
they're the same silvery tone.
When I was a kid, I loved wearing
things that were very Liza Minnelli
and camp, so we'll see how it goes.
I've gone pink and they kind
of match, but this doesn't
really look like a kids' outfit.
I think I'm just
overthinking it a bit too much.
I just need to calm down.
I picked this dress because it's
a beautiful, vintage-looking dress,
and it's already kind of got
the hard work done for me.
I'm going to bring in
the sides a bit and then make
a big bow out of the pink.
What's fun about this is it's got
that Christmas sparkle on it.
I think what I'm going to do is
I'm going to make little pantaloons,
which are quite funny,
and a wee T-shirt to go on top
with this purple.
Hi, Lawrence. Hi.
What's the plan for this?
I went for that
kind of gunmetal colour,
so this is going to be a top and
then it's going to have,
like, a Madonna La Isla Bonita
ruffle skirt.
Do you have any friends, kids
that might like a nice party dress?
Not really.
See, I get scared around children,
because when I dress up
they go, you know,
"Mummy, who's that clown
over there?" OK.
So actually,
kids don't deserve a dress.
Yes! Cos they're very rude!
They don't!
And they've got attitude problems.
Yeah!
OK, so I'm taking in the sides,
so she ain't swimming in it.
When I was a kid, my mum,
she made me lots of dresses.
It was very sweet.
My kids are grown-up kids now,
but they loved parties and I loved
making outfits for them for parties.
I mean, as long as you've got
a striped T-shirt and an eye patch,
you can be a pirate in our house.
Now, this is
one half of the trousers.
Is it actually a pantaloon?
It's a pantaloon! Oh, my God.
I've chopped the top off one dress
and the bottom off another dress,
and I'm sewing them together,
but it's hard to find
where to sew it.
This is going to be, like, the
bodice.
Really sparkly, really cute.
But sewing stuff that's
really small is a faff.
Ah! Oh, no, what have I done there?
Hang on.
If it doesn't go well,
I can console you like...
There, there, Claire!
You're doing a great...
Just keep it there! It's comforting.
You're doing a great job, OK?
Oh, yeah.
Right. Just got
the little party trousers on.
I think that's going to look good.
Let's have a look
how much I've bodged that.
Oh, God!
Her arm's come off!
Oh, my God.
Oh, no.
No children were harmed
in the making...
OK, maybe a child was.
I do this to dresses all the time
that I can't fit at the charity
shop. I just take it in at the side.
Oh, that's so clever.
Oh, no!
Child's arm!
If you've been traumatised
by this episode, please call...
This number right there.
It's my personal phone number.
Just Rose. I'll apologise to you.
Have a go at Rose.
You're halfway through, guys!
It's quite big, isn't it?
Right. I need to take it in
and the body's too long.
So what I need to do
is cut a T-shirt
and then sew it together.
This is so adorable.
It's teeny tiny, but it's cute.
What's this bit now?
This is one of the ruffles.
Is there a special stitch
for ruffling?
We don't have time.
No, we don't have time.
You're getting what you're getting.
Hurry up, then, ruffling! Yes! Just
stand around talking to me. Sorry!
Turn round to me, baby.
Now, what we're going to do
is pull this tight
so it's really neat at the neck.
How are you getting on, Rose?
I'm making a big bow.
Kind of going for, like,
c*ck party for a child.
I don't know if that's
a niche in the market.
Well, this is slightly
Goth vibe. Goth vibe?
That's what the kids like.
Is it you who was sick
in the plant pot?
Cos I'm not going to clean it up.
You've got half an hour.
That's not much time, is it?
This is stressful!
Do the Sewing Bee, they said.
It'll be fun, they said.
I'm really not happy
with my adjustments, but I'm now
going to fudge it and I'm going
to get nice embellishment bits.
That's going to be a nice bow.
I think she should have a headband,
but I don't want it to just
be plain cos it's a party.
Is there a feather anywhere
I can put in her head?
You have got some
really lovely feathers.
Oh, yeah?
You've got loads, though.
No.
No, never! No chance.
Right. I'll find something.
This big bow is quite cute.
Ten minutes!
Oh, my God.
It's not very party, is it?
I definitely think it's
a big enough transformation.
The outfits have literally
been torn apart.
I think I'm going to make
another bow to put on the top.
Found some more feathers.
You know, I think this is
actually Lawrence's child.
Five minutes! What?
The back is a bit dodgy.
I'm trying to hide the join.
Oh, look! Head bow!
I don't really know how
I'm going to put it on.
I can put it on elastic.
You can pin it into the head.
Yeah, I might just pin it
into the head, to be honest.
Perfect.
Probably not appropriate for a
child,
but we laugh in the face
of social norms.
This is real attention to detail.
She's got a little bit of
personality. A bit of attitude.
Oh, she really has.
Who doesn't love a bow?
I'm just going to, like,
keep adding stuff
until I haven't got any time left.
The scarf is an accessory.
One minute.
Argh!
Right, ribbon.
I think that's very Madonna.
Needles up, sewers.
Please bring your mannequins
forward for judging.
And it's very Molly Ringwald.
You know what? I'm actually slightly
proud of it.
Can we come into the disco?
Lemonade only, please!
THEY LAUGH
# Come on, jump on board...
Four bite-sized festive party
outfits made from recycled dresses
in just 90 minutes.
# Cos the kids are all right! #
Welcome back, Big Patrick and
Little Patrick,
and both little Esmes,
And the judges have no idea
whose is whose.
Hmm...
WHISPERED: I would wear the gold
one.
# I'm going to give it
all of my love
# And it's going to take up
all of my love
# I'm going to give it all
of my love
# And it's going to take up all of
my love...#
I can definitely see
a child wearing this,
feeling quite like a grown-up.
I love these colours.
They've chosen fabrics, both
of which have a bit of sparkle,
and they work incredibly
well together.
I love that we've got the belt,
the bow and the headpiece.
It's really fun and a phenomenal
transformation.
The only thing is -
that's pinned to the head.
No better way to attach
a child's headdress!
# Baggy trousers, baggy trousers
# Baggy trousers...#
This person's gone to town.
We've even got eyes.
I think this looks really cool.
The whole thing has been well
thought through.
There is purple Lurex aplenty,
but all these purple accents...
Yeah.
..work incredibly well, including
the purple... Feathers!
..feathers on the headband, and it
looks like it'd be fun to wear.
It's just...how does one get
in and out of it?
That is the only fly in this
New Year's party ointment.
# Going to dress you up in my love
# All over, all over...#
The effect of this is absolutely
fantastic.
The choice of the different fabrics
and colours and textures
works so well together,
and they've thought about
where they placed them all.
We've got a really well-fitting
bodice.
It really, really works.
I love this scarf, and we've got
a ra-ra skirt.
I think it looks great.
It's really fantastic.
# You are the dancing queen
# Young and sweet
# Only seventeen...#
We have a low waisted, quite 1920s
feeling salmon pink dress,
with just a couple of little
accents of purple.
We've got the purple sash at the
waist and a little purple
in the sequins on the shoulder.
And we've got another ra-ra skirt.
But this skirt looks part
of the original garment
and... Ah.
There's a bit of tuck, but I like
the combination of colours.
It looks completely wearable.
It looks like it'd be fun to kind
of jig around in.
Yeah, I really like it.
Patrick, Esme and their mini-mes...
SHE WHISPERS: So which do you like?
SHE WHISPERS: I like the grey,
then the gold.
..will now rank the outfits
from party animal...
HE WHISPERS: Your second one?
HE WHISPERS: That one. Yeah?
..to party pooper.
I might agree with you, actually.
It's like you've done this before.
In fourth place is...
..the pink one.
That's Claire.
We really like the combination,
but it felt that you hadn't
pushed yourself quite enough.
But it was very good.
Yeah. I mean, genuinely super
impressed by...
All of them.
..all four. Thanks.
In third place, it is the black
and purple.
That's Kirsty.
Kirsty, it's very chic -
only marked down
because we're not sure you can get
it on and off.
Luckily, the head comes off.
Oh, perfect.
So... So, just like in real life,
yeah. ..it's fine!
In second place...
..is the gold with the bows.
That's Rose.
Really fabulous choice of fabrics,
it looks great.
Cool.
Which means our New Year party
queen is Lawrence.
THEY CHEER
You did good, kid, you did good.
It's fantastic.
Every little detail, first-rate.
Thank you so much.
# I'm in the mood for dancing...#
I am ecstatic.
I'm processing all these emotions,
so all I can say is
argh-ha-ha-ha, ha-ha!
I dream of coming second place.
It's underrated, but it's not showy.
It's kind of like the coolest
place to come.
It was a great challenge.
I thought it was fun
and really creative.
It was just such a delight to do.
It was great.
Before I got here today,
I thought I was all right at sewing
but I'm obviously not very
good at it at all!
It's a new day...
Oh! Ooh!
This is exciting -
human interaction.
..and there's just one more
garment to make...
Good morning, good morning.
Nice to meet you.
..before we find out which of our
stars will claim
the New Year Sewing Bee crown.
Welcome back, sewers.
And if you thought that it couldn't
get any more exciting,
here are the models!
Your last challenge is
made-to-measure.
So what you make needs to fit your
model as perfectly
as a sherry glass fits into
Grandma's hand.
The judges have decided they would
like you to make
party food fancy dress.
Yes, you're going to make your
models look even more delicious
by turning them into yummy snacks.
You have four hours -
and your time starts now!
Right, can you stand up?
Just so we see what your waist
measurement is.
Our celebs have practised making
their garments at home.
I've never fitted anything
to someone.
Sorry, Tina. It doesn't put you at
ease to hear that, does it?!
But to give them a helping hand...
Pretending know what I'm
doing but I have no idea!
..their chosen fabric has been cut
out for them,
ready to cook up their costumes.
I have never been to a fancy dress
party.
I could just go as Claire
from Steps, couldn't I?
Get out one of my old costumes!
I think fancy dress is fun and
I could talk about food
all day - and I'm going to.
Today's the excuse.
So we've asked them to make
fancy dress costumes. Why?
Food is a big part of everybody's
festive celebrations,
and also it's a fantastic challenge
to see how they handle
something that's sculptured
and shaped.
So, what are you looking for?
They have to be recognisable
as a piece of food,
and I think it needs to have
a story and a meaning.
Where might they go wrong?
Fit, shape...
I think also timekeeping.
If they choose to be a bit
overambitious, you know...
Could run out of time.
We don't want empty plates
at the buffet. No!
What would you go as?
A nice battered haggis.
Oh, I say! Mm!
What would I go as?
A trolley full of food!
Yes.
Oh, for heaven's sake!
Morning, Lawrence. Hi!
What festive food fancy dress
are you making?
I love, for New Year's parties,
pigs in blankets.
Me too! So I thought,
why not translate it
into a draggy fancy dress gown?
Yeah, yeah.
You know? The sausage is going
to be the fitted part,
tight to the body in this kind of...
So, this is the sausage?
That is the sausage.
It's a velvet sausage.
So it's actually going to be quite
a sexy pig in blanket?
I think pigs in blankets are sexy
full stop!
Lawrence's sausage,
a stretchy tube dress,
requires no fitting -
giving her time for the task
of producing six feet of
streaky bacon,
by appliqueing strips of white to
pink scuba fabric.
The lucky thing about what I'm doing
is it's not, like, straight lines.
You know, bacon is ragged.
Bacon is a bit... Yeah, yeah.
So it allows for a creative...
Right. Wobble!
Yes, wobbles.
And once it's wobbled, it'll look
even more bacon-y.
Yeah. Making our mouths water
at the prospect!
It sounds fantastic.
While Lawrence plans to swaddle
her foodie fancy dress...
Who wouldn't want to be wrapped
up in bacon?!
..Rose is going dippy.
It was a dream of mine as a child to
have fondue. Ooh!
And so I'm making a fondue pot
dress.
I think some people still have sort
of the fondue kits in their house.
Yeah, I know. I feel like
I'm in the financial space
to buy a fondue kit.
Yes. But I haven't.
Don't do everything at once.
Just stagger your goals.
Exactly.
I recently bought, at 40,
a sandwich toaster,
and I'm really glad I waited.
I know. When you do get your cheese
fondue, you'll be like,
"I made a dress of you once.
This was destiny!"
Rose is basing her fondue pot on an
Empire Line dress,
with fitted bodice, puff sleeves
and invisible zip.
And to create the illusion
of molten cheese
dripping from her fork gloves,
she's using gold fringing.
Is this the cheese?
This is the cheese. Amazing!
It's going to be melting off.
But I've got a fair bit to do.
I hope I have time to actually
put the cheese on.
If you turn up with a fondue
and no cheese,
this is going to be a rubbish party!
I can't show up with a pot
with just forks.
No, you can't. So I'm going to have
to make time for that cheese.
Cheese also features in Kirsty's
New Year's Eve spread.
My model is going to be
Hogmanay party table.
Ooh! So she is going to walk about
with the food
and people can take the food
from her.
She's the New Year Food Fairy.
Her buffet will be served
on an olive green swing skirt
and top, which is finished with lace
cuffs and includes a selection
of traditional Scottish fare.
I'm making shortbread rounds,
and smoked salmon rounds
with cream cheese. OK.
Then I've got tweed to make my
haggis bonbons,
and she's going to have a pillbox
hat on with kale coming out of it.
It sounds ambitious. Yes,
and just come back tomorrow.
OK, right, yes.
While Kirsty...
I'm trying my best to this quickly.
..and Rose both have a lot
on their plate...
I probably chose quite
an ambitious dress.
..Lawrence's sausage has almost
come together.
I've nearly done the dress.
My fabric stretches,
so it is wonderful.
You absolutely have to stick
with what you know,
especially with these time
constraints.
And she's not the only one storming
ahead with an easy-to-fit design.
I've tried to keep the base
pretty simple... Yeah?
..so I could go to town on the giant
ball of ice cream
because I am making...
Yeah?
..an ice cream sundae.
And it's pink ice cream!
Of course! I didn't really want
to be chocolate.
No, it would be such a nice idea.
Everyone loves chocolate ice cream,
and then you would just see
a big poopy dress. Yeah.
Yeah. Exactly.
And I kind of want to do a train
at the back... Ooh!
..and I thought that wouldn't be
nice in brown either!
Claire will gather multiple layers
of pink tulle
to her scuba fabric dress to sculpt
her ice cream sundae.
She'll then top it with an
elasticated whipped cream cape,
pipe cleaner sprinkles and a glace
cherry hat.
I this the cherry, the hat?
Yeah, that's the cherry on top! Yes.
Esme likes a cherry.
Cute! Oh, yes!
I think it'd suit you better.
Well, it might, but nobody's
going to be able to see
the top of it, are they?
Oh, no, that's off!
OK, dress - done.
Right, bacon...
Fast food designs have given
Lawrence and Claire a head start
on their sweet and savoury layers.
I like my bacon very crispy.
But before Rose...
Argh!
..and Kirsty can move on to
anything edible...
Right, thank you.
Can I just have you in this?
..they first need to perfect the fit
of their costumes on their models.
Tina, I need you here, right now.
OK. Because your skirt's up here,
I'm going to take a little bit here.
I'm just trying to figure out
how this bodice can fit
to Tina a bit better cos you don't
want a saggy bodice.
What I've got to do, because I've
got so much embellishment,
is make sure it fits,
but leave enough time
to do proper party foods.
There's quite a lot to gather.
I just want it to be as big
as possible.
This looks complicated!
Yeah, just a little.
Are you enjoying this challenge?
I am. It's just...I am a big
perfectionist.
I think you have to remember that
sausages are just minced up
bits of intestines.
It's such a low bar.
THEY LAUGH
I could just literally... Throw...
Roll around on the floor!
I'm a sausage -
take me to the party!
# Sausage, peas and beans
# Spaghetti, rice and tangerines
# Lump-free custard,
crisp French fries
# These are foods I idolise...#
I hope you've got all the
ingredients, guys,
because you're halfway through.
I'm going to start constructing
the shape.
So this is a big dollop
of mixed berry ice cream.
The bacon's looking not bad...
..so I'm now top stitching it.
The thing I love most about pigs
in blankets is the warm grease
as it trickles down your face.
This is my skirt.
In Scotland, people make a huge
effort to have parties at Hogmanay,
so you need a big swingy skirt
that you can move
in easily and dance in.
I'm making a sleeve.
It's all gathered and puffy.
I would definitely wear something
like this at a New Year's Eve party.
Obviously, New Year's Eve in
New Zealand happens much
earlier than here - we're in the
future, which is fun.
I try and work on New Year's Eve
because there's nothing like
ringing in the New Year
with a pay cheque.
Kirsty! I'm just so fascinated by
all this stuff on the floor.
Yes, there's lots of stuff on
the floor. I can see coal!
Because coal is an integral part
of Hogmanay.
You know, people bring coal to you,
crossing your doorstep at midnight.
Are you having a drink, as well?
Yes, it's that time of day.
You're a legend, aren't you?!
THEY LAUGH
Ovens on, guys.
You've got one hour left.
Geez, Louise!
I think I'm doing bad for time, so
I've still got the skirt to go
and then, like, making the cheese
connect to the dress.
Right, so I have my skirt.
I'm happy, but itching to start
with the embellishments.
It's starting to look like how I
wanted it to look now. Oh, good.
The vision is becoming a reality.
Yeah. Thank goodness!
I think Claire's making really
good progress.
Yeah. She's gathering those layers
on top,
placing them and tacking them
to shape.
It'll look interesting.
Yeah.
OK, front bacon...done.
Lawrence's - I'm sure it's going to
look really glamorous,
but I'm not sure the bacon's going
to look like bacon.
It's not wobbly enough.
Yeah, maybe it is a little
too straight.
I love a bacon sandwich - only if
it's crispy, streaky bacon.
Yes! What are you making?
Smoked salmon cream cheese
open face sandwiches.
That's very classy.
A wee bit of parsley on top
and then I can sew.
I'm a little concerned that
Kirsty hasn't got time
to get all of her Hogmanay
smorgasbord assembled,
she's got lots of pieces.
And, you know, I think the impact is
in the variety
of the different foods she's got.
Let's put the shirt together.
I do hope Rose's ends up looking
like a cheese fondue.
I'm slightly worried she's
just making a dress
and bunging a few fringes.
The cheese is nowhere near
going on yet.
I've got to stitch the bodice
to the skirt.
I like a cheese fondue. Do you?
I do, actually.
Half an hour left, guys,
30 minutes till chow down.
Oh, God! How are you doing, Rose?
I don't even have a dress,
so...it's fun.
Happy New Year!
This is the dollop of cream.
It's got net to make it
puff out a little bit.
Could be a bit lumpy -
lumpy cream!
So I'm using this wadding to pad out
this bow that I'm making,
so it's not weak, limp and lifeless.
OK, shortbread.
I've got to get going if I'm going
to finish.
There we go. There's one, two...
Another one.
Right, that looks good.
OK, that's the skirt attached.
And now I've got to put a zip in and
that's going to be a bit difficult
and I've got no time and I've still
got to put my cheese.
But, look, we've got a dress.
15 minutes!
SHE GASPS
There's not much time left.
Oh, geez, Louise!
OK, let's do this!
It's starting to look like
I intended.
So I'm going to glue on
my sprinkles now.
All right, the kale.
I've got to add my bacon,
so it's, like, sewn
into the side seams.
Yeah, I thrive under pressure.
What has happened there?
How has that happened?
The zip's a disaster.
Hundreds and thousands are quite
important to a sundae,
especially for kids.
I'm just securing my kale to my hat.
God, this is practically couture.
Right, boom, boom, boom.
And then these two at the back.
Oh, she's gone mad.
What are you doing? I've got...
Are you in a tug-of-w*r with
Kirsty Wark?!
I've got to cut the fringing out.
GIGGLING: That's the cheese!
Right, let's get these on.
How long to go?
Five minutes, everyone.
SHE GROANS
I've nearly sewn the side seams.
It's very stressful!
Just going to bustle up this
back net a bit.
I think I'll just put my
Hogmanay on here.
I was told I could sew it at home
and bring it, so I did.
These are the forks.
And so, literally, I'm going to chop
off the pinky and the thumb.
OK, let me zip you up.
Hello, sausage!
I need to put my lace on the
sleeves.
It's just the wee added detail -
do I really need it?
Yes.
This is the cheese on the fork...
..that then connects to
the fondue pot.
Lawrence, this is fancy bacon.
Yes. Classy bacon. Yeah.
I think I might have to safety pin
the cheese on,
but it makes it detachable,
which is good.
But it's a day-to-night look,
you know what I mean?
At night, we add the cheese!
One minute!
Urgh! Going to pop some shoulder
pads in here.
I am happy.
It fits really nicely, actually.
Woohoo! Are you in it?
Do you feel delicious?
I do, you know?!
Do you think if we went to a party,
people would know what you were?
Erm... In one hand,
you've got coal.
Needles up, sewers.
That is your time.
Plate up, because the judges
are ravenous.
Oh, my God... Oh, my God!
The beret is perfect.
That's so awesome!
# Food, glorious food
# What wouldn't we give for
# That extra bit more
# That's all that we live for...
Four finger lickin' festive fancy
dress costumes,
made-to-measure in just four hours.
# On food
# Magical food
# Wonderful food
# Wonderful food
# Glorious
# Food. #
Never has a chipolata and a couple
of rashers of streaky bacon
looked so chic. Yeah...
Genuinely, it's wonderful to behold.
The fit of it is superb and
it looks like you could
party for 24 hours in it.
I think the bow looks great and
I really like...
You've got this trailing bit.
But I have to say,
it doesn't really remind me
of a pig in a blanket.
It looks very glamorous.
Lawrence thinks sausages are
glamorous.
Absolutely! Yeah.
This is how she sees all sausages.
# She's a fine wee lass,
a bonnie wee lass
# Is bonnie wee Jeannie McColl
# I gave her my mother's
engagement ring
# And a bonnie wee tartan shawl
# I met her at a waddin' at
the Co-operative Hall...#
Kirsty, I think it's a huge success.
I love it!
It's got everything that I associate
with Hogmanay but, actually,
it's got a very lovely, quite
chic feel to it somehow,
and it's really very nicely made.
There are so many lovely details.
We've got shortbread rounds
and then we've got the kale hat
and the little salmon blinis,
I think, are exquisite.
I think it looks great.
Thank you. I love the coal!
SHE CHUCKLES
You've really thought about it,
and all the little details
say Hogmanay.
Hogmanay. Happy New Year.
Are we going to g*y Gordons now?
We're going to g*y Gordons, we'll
probably have some whisky!
# Deeply dippy bout the fun we had
# Deeply mad
# Mad for the fun we had
# Oh, my love
# I can't make head nor tail
of passion...#
I think you've made a fantastic
looking dress.
There's some really beautiful
sewing.
These are complicated sleeves.
You've gathered it really neatly.
The slight fly in the ointment
for me is
if I walked into a room and saw
Tina,
it wouldn't instantly shout
"fondue set,"
which I think is a little bit
of a problem with...
But that's the good thing,
is that at a party,
you want to have a conversation
starter. Yeah.
So you want someone to come over to
you and go,
"What are you dressed as?"
"What have you come as?"
And you go, "I'm a fondue pot".
And you go... Exactly!
"I'm fondue forks." Exactly!
You don't want it to be, like,
too obvious. I see.
It's too subtle for us.
It's a bit too subtle!
THEY LAUGH
Turn around.
Oh...
Something happened with...
With the zip.
You've put it in really well till
you got to the bottom.
To the bottom! Yeah.
But, honestly, you've made a really
wearable dress.
I'm so impressed.
Can you lift your arms up so
we can see the cheese?
It almost looks like they're wings,
doesn't it?
About to take off!
She's a cheese angel.
Yes!
# I can give you what you want
# I can make your heart beat short
# I can make you ice cream
# We could be a sweet team
# Melting in your vice dreams,
sport...#
Claire, it looks sumptuous.
I'm so convinced that this
is an ice cream sundae,
I want to eat it.
It's so fun.
It's so colourful.
It's absolutely fantastic.
How you've arranged this net
is brilliant
and much more interesting than
just doing tiers.
You've gathered up so much
of this net,
without making it heavy
and unwearable.
And I love the cream with
the sprinkles on.
I think it looks great.
I think if I was going to fancy
dress dressed as food,
I actually might well go in this.
I love it.
Thank you.
Well done, Claire. Come on, Claire.
Thank you!
The challenges are complete
for another New Year.
The taxis are on their way.
Go and have a drink of water
and a fizzy vitamin
while the judges make some
decisions.
SIGHS OF RELIEF
We did it!
I love that Patrick said
he would wear it.
I would wear it too!
Probably not even to a fancy
dress party.
This will go down as one of the most
exciting Hogmanays I've ever had.
It was just so enjoyable.
I totally agree with Patrick that it
was a bit subtle,
but I think you could meet someone
really interesting
explaining to them that your
hands are forks.
Given that I won both challenges
yesterday,
there was a lot of pressure
riding on this wee one.
So I just hope my streak
continues with this streaky bacon.
People say how you bring in the
new year is indicative
of how the next year is going to be.
So, are we in for a wonderful
12 months?
Well, I think we're all going to
have to give up our diets
immediately because this lot
look good enough to eat.
I agree.
Who has shone in the
made-to-measure?
There's one for me that leaps out
as an identifiable food object,
and that is Claire's ice
cream sundae.
It's just a real feast for the eyes.
Also, I think Lawrence's
is so glamorous,
but it doesn't quite look like...
..pigs in blankets. It's not a
literal pig in a blanket. No.
But, actually, so much work in it.
And Lawrence gave us two fantastic
sews yesterday.
Well, someone will be popping
the champagne,
so let's go and give
them the glad tidings.
I normally hate New Year's Eve,
but I must be hanging
around with the wrong people
because you guys have made
the biggest night of the year
two days to remember.
And it's not over yet.
Patrick, will you whip off the
silky sheet and tell us
who has won Celebrity New Year
Sewing Bee?
Our favourite New Year's Sewing Bee
garment is...
THEY CHEER AND APPLAUD
Well done! Well done!
Well done, Claire.
Absolutely fabulous foodie creation.
You were all fantastic, but this one
literally was the cherry on top.
SHE SHRIEKS EXCITEDLY
Oh, God, that's a weird noise,
isn't it?!
I'm so excited.
Claire's outfit - can you imagine
walking in the room wearing that?
Everyone would go, "Wow"!
I'm over the moon.
So, bring on 2022 now.
I'm coming for you!
Thank you so much to all of you
for taking part.
You've all been amazing.
It was fun.
This whole experience has kind of
rebooted my interest in sewing.
I think one of the major trends
of 2022 will be
kale hats and capes.
I don't think I'll be touching a
sewing machine for another year.
Charity shops have so many
good clothes to wear.
Like, why...
I think I'm going to leave it
to the professionals
and just buy other people's
second-hand clothes.
My New Year's resolution truly is to
get back on that sewing machine,
so I can come back again next year
and win all three challenges!
Having all this food around is
making me feel hungry.
Oh, I'd love a drink.
Fancy a boogie? Let's go!
