The Sewing Bee started with 12.
Nervous?
ALL: Yes.
And now just three remain.
The winner of The Great British
Sewing Bee is...
This year's three Sewing Bee finalists...
Let's get going, guys.
...each have their own very
distinctive style.
Oh!
Youngest sewer Mia's fashion-forward
outlook...
I'm thinking of doing,
like, a swoosh.
...combined with her spirited
creative attitude...
The fingers give good pleats.
...has helped her impress,
particularly in the Transformation challenge.
Very iconic for Madonna.
And in the Made-to-measure...
Mia!
...she has won Garment Of The Week twice.
Mia, I think, is absolutely fearless.
She delivers amazing-looking
garments
from absolutely nothing.
She takes an old shower curtain
and produces something
that looks like haute couture.
And I think she could be a real
inspiration to younger sewers.
Good luck.
I can't believe I'm actually here.
I made my very special glitter top.
I thought, coming on the final,
you have to wear glitter.
Right, here goes nothing.
Tony stepped away from the safety
of menswear...
It's just a dress, innit?
...but stayed true to his unique
style throughout.
Big fan of the skull?
Love the skull.
His use of graphic prints
and unusual fabrics impressed
the judges...
I really like the 3D-ness.
...and he scored one...
CHEERING
...Garment Of The Week.
Tony is a real character,
and he's really put himself
out there.
He's gone, "Right, I'll just
go for it."
He has got a really
individual style,
and he's got better and better
and better.
I'm ecstatic.
Being a man of a certain age,
you don't get many new experiences,
so this is just incredible.
Who'd have thought?
I hadn't have thought.
Ooh, last page!
Asmaa's proved her technical
prowess by dominating
the Pattern challenges.
PATRICK: It's pretty close
to perfection.
Garment Of The Week, however, remained
just out of her grasp -
until she won...
Asmaa!
...three in a row.
What Asmaa has learnt to do
over the last nine weeks
is rein in some of those slightly
too exuberant flourishes.
She's still very ambitious but
she's brought it back to a level
where she can use that
amazing ability
to deliver fantastic-looking
garments
that fit beautifully and that are
made fantastically well.
To be amongst Tony and Mia is
actually quite daunting.
My stomach is all over the place
with butterflies,
but also looking forward to it.
I'm really excited to see
what they do
because they're all so different.
Wow!
You guys looks stunning.
I wish I'd have dressed up now.
LAUGHTER
Good morning, sewers.
Come forward.
Come on, then. Come on.
Come on now, baby.
So this is it.
The showdown.
The conclusion.
The cl*max. The denouement.
The one where I most used
my thesaurus!
For the final, you'll be asked to
make clothes that ooze glamour.
So, listen, it's time to glisten.
And someone who always brightens up
our lives,
over to Esme for the Pattern challenge.
Here we go.
Thank you.
You ready?
One, two, three.
Ah! Oh! Ah, OK.
What we want you to make
is an evening dress
for a special occasion.
It's got a fitted bodice,
puffed sleeves with two frills
on the bottom
and a skirt with one frill.
This Victoriana style has been
hugely popular
on the red carpet of late,
so pick a luxurious fabric
that will do it justice.
You have 4.5 hours
and your time starts now!
Right, let's give it a go.
Which ones are we heading for?
For a fantastically
frivolous frock...
Possibly.
...the sewers will need a fabric that
stands out in the spotlight.
Probably that one is good, isn't it?
That's the same as what I've got
here but in silver.
I chose this fabric
because it's got,
like, a metallic-y
element to it.
It looks quite glamorous.
Tony and I have exactly
the same fabric,
but mine is silver,
which I think is going to look
absolutely stunning.
This is a fabric I've never
used before.
I think it's going to be very
fray-y.
But it's glamour, isn't it?
And when you think of glamour,
you've got to think of gold.
I have never heard of this dress -
Victoriana -
so it's going to be a fun one to
see how this turns out.
Taking inspiration from
the high neck lines
and statement frills of classic
Victorian fashion,
Victoriana dresses with their
flattering silhouettes
and flouncy details are a hit
with celebrities
and even royalty.
It is exactly my style.
And I've made similar dresses,
so I'd better do well.
A Victoriana dress for the final -
why have you chosen it?
This style of dress has firmly made
the leap from the catwalk
to the everyday wardrobe of women
across the UK.
And it presents an interesting challenge.
We've asked them to sew it
in a luxurious fabric,
so probably a fabric that is going
to reflect the light
in some way or other,
which will show up any imperfections
in their sewing.
And there's some really, really
tricky elements in here.
We've got gather on the sleeve head
with some net,
and we've got a fitted top
with a French dart
that goes from the nipple down
to the side at an angle.
There's also two rows
of gathered frills
on the end of each sleeve,
and we've got a layer at the bottom
of the skirt.
So all of that gathering needs to be
really evenly created.
And what we have on the end of the
frill is a baby lock edge.
It's a very fine overlocked finish
just encasing that raw edge. Yeah.
But you need to be able
to control it.
There have been some very difficult
Pattern challenges,
but this presents a combination
of difficult techniques
and a requirement for a real
deftness of touch.
Well, this is fascinating,
but I'm going to do a lap
and see if I know anyone.
How's it already the final? Already.
Time flies when you're having fun!
There's a lot of stuff in here
that I've not done.
But look at that.
One could say that's the only time
I'm going to get gold today.
Oh, no, don't say things like that!
We've all got gold already.
To start the dress, angled
French darts are sewn
into the front bodice and the back
panels are attached.
Next, the sleeve heads are gathered,
pleated net is sewn inside
to create volume.
Two frills finished with
a baby locked hem
are attached to each sleeve,
which are then inserted
into the bodice.
Next, the skirt is sewn together
and attached at the waist.
Then a zip is inserted.
And to finish, one final frill is
gathered and attached at the hem.
Hello. Hello.
Your last Pattern challenge. Yep.
I'm so surprised.
Are you?
I can't even believe. I feel like
I've just kind of slipped through
and I'm suddenly here.
Well, no, you've done a lot more
than slip through, for sure.
Mia learnt to sew in lockdown,
which only added to her long list
of creative hobbies.
Within two years, she had sewn
herself a handmade wardrobe
and was inspired to apply for
a costume design course,
which she starts this year.
For her whole life,
Mia's been creative.
She's always thinking of new things
and building things.
I've got two boys and Mia,
and Mia is the only one I've bought
a toolkit for
because she actually uses it.
SHE LAUGHS
Well, when we found out that
Mia was in the final,
we just couldn't believe it,
could we?
To have picked up a skill so well
in such a short period of time
was amazing.
We're just so proud of her,
I could burst!
LAUGHTER
And you might well later.
I might do.
I am glad it's a dress and gathers.
I like gathers.
Yep. Look.
I've got double gathers today. Yeah.
So it should be fun.
You've practised.
Yeah, did my homework.
SHE CHUCKLES
I am nervous, though, because I've
never really used any fabric
that's this slinky,
so new things for the final.
Mia may have concerns about
her slinky fabric...
Oh, my goodness!
It's too slippy!
...but Tony and Asmaa's
metallic lame...
Tony, I think our fabric
is a nightmare.
...comes with a whole new
set of challenges.
My initial fears over this fabric
have been realised.
It's just going to fall apart
in front of my eyes.
The fraying of this fabric is an
absolute nightmare already.
You'd think these sort of luxurious
fabrics would be easier
to work with.
I don't want to handle this
too much.
Is this another sort of
"Tony, I'm learning"?
It's a "Tony, I'm learning" -
it's a complete out of
the comfort zone.
Supposed to be! It's the final.
But almost...
Yeah, you'd think it was the final,
wouldn't you?
I know, it's barmy. How do you feel
about being a finalist?
TONY SIGHS
I'd like to say I still don't think
it's sunk in.
I mean, it has a little bit.
I've had a good old cry to myself.
Have you?
And to my wife and kids.
Yeah, it's overwhelming, isn't it?
Yeah, most definitely,
because you don't expect this sort
of thing to happen.
I'm nearly, nearly again. Yeah!
Nearly! Nearly!
Postman Tony started sewing to make
himself some mountain biking gear,
but quickly moved onto shorts,
then a whole wardrobe of
statement shirts.
My dad's quite crazy.
He doesn't really care about what
other people think about him.
He'll just do what he wants
or wear what he wants.
I think he's pretty cool.
When he's not being embarrassing.
If I could give him any advice
for the final, I would say
keep doing you and try not to cry
too much at the end.
I think winning would probably be
the best thing he's ever done.
I don't think he'd ever get over it.
You wouldn't hear the end of it.
So I say to you "glamour",
and what do you think of?
I've worn a black tie once.
By itself?
Yeah, just that, nothing else.
It shocked everybody as I walked in.
SHE LAUGHS
OK, my French dart time.
French darts - are they the same
as normal darts?
I think it's a French dart
because it's at an angle
and it points towards the bust.
So now we have the front
bodice with the darts.
Guys, are your darts really pointy?
Yeah.
Like, look.
Yes, there you go.
Yeah, they're pointy.
Yeah, good grief.
Hi. It's cold!
MIA LAUGHS
And the darts aren't the only
prominent feature on this dress.
Everyone's darted up, ready to go.
Once the front and back bodice
are attached... Right.
...they need to turn their attention
to the puffed-up shoulders.
So I'm gathering now the top
of the sleeve cap,
but I'm not a big fan of gathering.
And this stuff, man,
is just horrible.
How are you getting on?
It's not the easiest to sew with.
You look at it and it sheds.
You're getting a bit of fray,
aren't you?
Yeah, so I'm just minimal sort of...
Minimal touching.
Delicate. Delicately goes.
Yeah, absolutely.
Asmaa is a breast surgeon
and no stranger to delicate sewing,
as she often sews lingerie -
both for herself and making bespoke
bras for her cancer patients.
My mum's awesome.
She's incredibly talented at sewing
but I don't think she realises
just how good she is.
She made my suit for my prom
and everyone complimented it
at the time.
I'm very proud of my mum for
making it to the final.
If I could give one piece of advice,
it would be
don't stress yourself out too much,
you've made it incredibly far
and we're all very proud of you.
It's very odd being in the final.
I think Tony's going to cry
no matter who wins.
Oh, God, yeah.
Mind you, I keep saying I'm not
an emotional person
but I've been feeling a bit
emotional as well. Yeah.
So has Sewing Bee broken you?
Have we made you more emotional?
Sewing Bee's completely broken me.
In a good way!
THEY LAUGH
So this is the net, because we're
making a shoulder pad.
You use net to create some volume.
I've got a dress with this in.
Is that comfortable, though?
It doesn't bother you.
Oh, OK, cool.
Cos I can't imagine...
Thank you for your empathy.
"Ooh, these poor women!"
But why do you wear that?!
Lovely shoulders, but they're
absolute agony!
Goodness gracious me.
I'm doing some origami over here.
So this is going to go on there,
isn't it?
Cos that's going to give that
some foofy loft.
That's quite satisfying, that.
Foofy loft.
TONY LAUGHS
That is a pointy sleeve. Come on.
That's a lot.
GLASS DINGS
Thank you so much for all
being here today.
You're halfway through.
I'm gathering now the first frill.
The sleeve frills require gathering
four long strips.
I might lose my mind by the time
it's done.
But with unstable fabric...
I am gathering very gingerly,
cos look at this!
...to get the accurate neat finish
the judges are looking for...
Ah, man. I mean, there's nightmares
and then there's what's happening
here today.
...extra precautions may be required.
I think I'm going to recut,
overlock them
and then do it again.
Overlocking will seal the raw edge
and make it more stable
and easier to gather.
Hopefully this will eliminate
the issue.
And Asmaa isn't the only sewer
to ditch their first frill.
I've overlocked it before
I'm going to ruffle it,
and it seems to be working now.
But if you want to see
a really bad one,
that was my first attempt.
Don't touch 'em, they'll fall apart.
HE LAUGHS
Once gathered, the sewers need to
baby lock the bottom of each frill.
It just finishes off the edge
and it looks nice
when you've got, like,
flowing fabric.
But this rolled hem technique
requires precision
and a delicate touch.
TONY SIGHS
It's falling apart.
Especially with a fraying fabric.
I've skipped a few steps ahead
and baby locked
before I do the gathers.
Cos I think, if I leave it
to the end,
there won't be anything left.
Ah, no!
My baby lock's ripping off
the bottom of my frill.
Remind me again, Tony,
why did we choose it?
Because it was gold and silver.
There wasn't any other...
Fair enough.
...informed or educated guess,
I don't think.
Welcome to making poor decisions
in life with Tony!
HE LAUGHS
ASMAA SIGHS
I'm just pinning the frills
onto the sleeves.
What the instruction says
is you have to gather
and then put it on the sleeve.
I'm actually going to gather it
as I'm doing this,
because I just can't handle it
too much.
"Pin the frills to the sleeve
and stitch,
"ensuring the gathering is even."
Can't promise that.
So, at this point of the sleevage,
I am just sewing and praying.
We will worry about the symmetricalness
once it's on the mannequin.
I'm sort of wanting to rush
but I'm trying to slow myself down
because I know rushing always
causes problems.
Oh, sh**t the breeze!
I've caught all my edge and folded
over one of the frills.
But if I cut it out, it'll have to
be all completely regathered
and there's no time to do that.
Canape? You have one hour left.
Oh, my gosh!
I'm feeling a little bit anxious
about actually finishing this.
The sleeve has to go in
in the next five minutes.
So I'm stitching the skirt
side seams next.
Lots to do.
I'm about to ask you
what you think of
when you think of glamour, and it's
obviously someone... Obviously.
...quite close to home. Yeah.
I didn't even put the two
and two together.
As they sew the skirt, they'll
need to take care
not to stretch their seams.
It's taking too long.
Because with such iridescent fabrics,
any lumps or bumps will be accentuated.
I'm trying to flatten the seams
because I've got a feeling
they might've walked a little bit,
but they're actually not too bad.
I am now sewing the bodice
to the skirt.
I haven't ironed cos I just wanted
to get it all in one piece.
Ta-dah! The skirt is now on.
OK, zip time.
Just trying to get it in.
Because of this fabric, I've just
got to be a little bit careful.
If I go too close to the edge,
it's just going to rip out.
You've got half an hour left!
Oh, my God!
I'm still battling with
the bloody zip.
This fabric doesn't like the teeth
nice and neat and close to it.
Ah, no!
My seam's ripping open.
I've fallen out completely
with this dress.
It's back to tracksuit bottoms
for all of us. I think so.
I think so.
This is facing to help
finish the neck.
I will soon have this facing in
but I've still got a whole layer
of gathered skirt to put on.
Asmaa, have you got your skirt
on yet?
The frill?
Yeah.
No, I haven't. That would be
just wishful thinking.
How long have we got left?
Ten minutes left!
God.
34a.
That's the stage I'm at. Mild panic.
This last bit is the frill.
And there's three metres

I don't like this.

How are they doing?
Well, the Pattern challenge,
Mia came first.
She sewed that Victoriana dress
fantastically well.
So, up at the top - Mia. Yep.
And then, did the Transformation
change that?
Well, it did a little.
Asmaa had a very clear idea
and she nailed it.
And then I think Mia and Tony
were pretty close.
So we have some tight contention
between Asmaa and Mia. Yeah.

Fresh faces in the sewing room?
For your last ever Made-to-measure,
the judges would like you
to make a two-in-one dress.
That's a dress that
starts as one style
and then transforms to another one
on the catwalk.
You have 5.5 hours, and your time
starts now.
Right, let's go.
Up you come. Let's double-check
your measurements.
The sewers have already
had 90 minutes

the complex engineering

I'm a bit terrified!

chaos will reign.
Asmaa, nothing's changed!
THEY LAUGH
A two-in-one dress, perfect for
when you've got a big meeting
and then a very important
swimming gala.
Why have you chosen it?
We've seen Blake Lively
and Lady Gaga
at the Met Gala have outfits that
start off looking one way
and then there is this dramatic metamorphosis.
And it presents a very unique
challenge to our sewers.
How are they going to engineer
two garments into one?
What I'm very intrigued about
is how it's going to work.
Do they have a tie round their neck?
Do they have a great big bow?
There's the waterfall technique,
where you've got something
that's held up
and it's released and it kind of
cascades down.
But when we see the first rendition
of the dress,
we don't want to be looking at it, thinking,
"Hmm, something's about to happen
here."
And this has to be something that
their friends or family model
does themselves?
Yeah. This transformation needs
to happen mid-catwalk, yeah.
Yeah. Wow.
So I'm starting out with
the reveal dress,
the one that comes after.
It's so weird that this is the last
one I'm going to make,
the 30th thing.
Hello, hello.
Hello!
Ooh, a bit of pink glitter.
Are you surprised?
MIA LAUGHS
No, not in the least!
Tell us what you're doing.
So, the first dress is going to
be like a Dutch satin
gathered short dress.
And then this is going to be what
it reveals into -
a big, long glittery dress.
How are you going to reveal it?
It's going to have a rip-down top.
Mia's outer black satin dress will
be held in place with Velcro.
It will have a sweetheart neckline
and fitted bodice.
The second dress will be hidden
inside a hammock-like pocket
inside the waist seam.
Once revealed, the sparkling gown
will sweep the floor
and be held up by diamante straps.
The hammock, it's a very strange mechanism
but it's the only thing
I could come up with.
Hopefully it will all work out,
but it's nerve-racking making
things for people
you know, isn't it? Well, stakes
couldn't be higher than today.
I know. I'm going to work hard
and get it done, I hope.
All right, fingers crossed.
And Mia's model is not the only one
starting the night
in a little black dress.
My transformation dress is going to
be a black satin bodice
with a puffball skirt.
Halfway down the catwalk, we're
going to go for the transform.
Transform is a little mechanism
on the sides.
When they release that, that's then
going to fall to reveal
a really bold-print fishtail
long dress.
So the top stays the same...
Top stays the same.
...but the skirt transforms itself?
Yeah.
But there's still quite a lot to do.
To create the puffball shape,
Tony will pleat the bottom
of his skirt and the waist
will be gathered
into a frill using a strip
of elastic.
With a button securing the end,
the elastic will also act as
a mechanism
which, when released, will drop
the puffball
and reveal the colourful fishtail
skirt underneath.
We've got mad, colourful print.
Oh, lovely, lots of fun.
What's it? Butterfly with a bum.
And then a flower playing a ukulele.
Ooh!

Well, I want to. I'm going to be

OK, I'm going to speed-sew today.
I need to get this dress done.
Does it feel comfortable?

Oh, God, Asmaa, how's she already
whipped up a top?
She's doing it in heels as well.
Honestly, Millie, those are
her sewing heels
and she's got taller heels that
she wears in the day. Oh, wow.
How's it going?
I'm just sorting out the bodice
for the inner dress,
which is V neck in glitter.
And the back is going to have
an Esme, I hope, standard bow.
And then the cobalt blue is going
to be the top dress.
And will you see any of sort of
green underneath
or will it be completely blue?
Completely blue.
And then...
And then... green.
And how does that shuh, shuh, shuh -
do you know how that happens?
It's going to rip.
And then everything will just
unravel and then come down.
Oh, wow.
Asmaa's blue dress is held up
with snap fasteners
for a quickfire release.
And she's opted for a loose, draped
bodice in order to disguise
the satin bow and gathered skirt
of her glittery green gown
that will have her best friend since
medical school, Priti,
ready to party.
Asmaa and I met over a

the fit of their bodices...
That's not too tight, is it?
Nope, feels lovely.
That's going to be really nice, that.
...they can move onto the first
skirts of the day.
So I'm just gathering the skirt up.
It should be very densely gathered.
Because it's so slinky, I had to
handle it quite carefully.
But I'm that adamant to get
this right.
You will.
I think we're all feeling
the pressure.
You're doing well.
Once your first dress is done,
then it'll be easier.

Emily lives miles away.
But you're moving closer again,

Which is kind of cool, yeah. Unless
this dress goes horribly wrong,
and then she's going to Australia.
So I've gathered and attached
the skirt,
and now I'm putting in the
invisible zipper.
This fabric's so slinky.
I am going to put a little bit of interfacing
where I'm going to put my zip.
Nine weeks ago, I would never have
known to do this.
This doesn't have a zip,
cos the dress
at the back is elasticated.

of your hard work.
Oh, you're halfway through!
Oh, man, that's rubbish.
Got lots left to do,
but I'm just taking out a couple
of stitches
so the zip works.
I'm just putting the fishtail onto
the bottom of the inner dress
before I start the second dress.
I've got to hand-sew the
diamond straps.
I just need to get this done cos
I'm nervous about timings.
I'm happy with that. Getting some
happy vibes.
I need to sew the lining down.
But you know what? We'll fix it
at the end.
Right, let's do it. Wrap.
I'm now just sorting out the bodice
for the outer dress.
It's a little bit complex because
it's got two layers.
To ensure she keeps her
reveal dress under wraps,
Asmaa's design requires an extra
layer of blue satin...
That comes up here.
...to hold everything tight...
Hopefully it won't be that bulky,
but that should be fine.
...before the second layer drapes
loosely over the top.
That's quite long, so when
you wear it,
you won't see the bulk.
And Tony has also started to
prepare for the big reveal.
I've just started the puffball.
At the top, there's a channel
that's got some elastic running
round it.
This is an integral to part
of the mechanism.
But Mia's mechanism can't be attached
until her outer dress is complete.
I want to make sure I speed through
this bit
so I can make sure the falling
open works.
I'm very nervous to see this!
Oh, Lizzie. I miss you, Lizzie.
Oh, Tony W!
Where are you now?
Aw, Tony R.
You're still here.
You've got one hour left.
Oh, my goodness!
I think I've done that thing,
thinking I've got a lot of time,
and then suddenly you think,
"I haven't got a lot of time."
But I've got my Rage Against The
Sewing Machine T-shirt on today,
which kind of will help me.
I am quickly bias binding the edges
of the middle bodice -
it's just for structure -
where you need to pull open.
I'm just doing a couple
of button holes.
Oh, is this the mechanism?
Yeah, the mechanism.
I'm seeing behind the curtain.
The elastic holds the skirt up
by tension.
We'll release the button, snap,
and we're going to be off.
Snap. Boing!
Tony's, I think, is the simplest
of the three,
but he's got to pleat all of
the black skirt...
Yes.
...and thread his elastic.
It's a lot to do.
I am hemming the skirt
for the top dress.
Asmaa, I think, is reasonably close
to finishing,
but there's a lot of complicated
construction. Yes.
She's got two layers on
the outside dress.
You could attach things incorrectly. Yeah.
So now I'm gathering
the second skirt.
Mia's got quite a lot to do. Yeah.
I'm still not entirely sure
I understand
how the whole thing is going
to transform.
The black is attached with Velcro,
and I guess when that comes down
it disappears.
It's underneath the pink.
So it has to be the right length. Yeah.
MIA: I definitely think
this is ambitious.

on the front
so that it can rip open.

on properly,
I'll then attach the back part
of the Velcro.
OK. I am now trying to bring
the two dresses together.
Oh, my God, this is just ridiculous.

Not the medical degree,

SCREAMING
My grandmother, she was
a seamstress,
who taught my mother,
who then taught me.
So I think this just confirms
that it's in the blood.
Told you. I said from the start,
"Bloody hell, she's won."
Asmaa is a really talented sewer -
very precise, very neat.
This last challenge,
she really pulled it off.
How you engineered that was
out of this world.
That final gown was spectacular!
I'm not sure I've ever seen anything
quite so special on Sewing Bee.
Spellbinding.
Mia has said nothing but lovely
things about you all season.
Oh, thank you so much. Thank you.
Thank you for taking care of her.
You are most welcome, thank you.
I've not been calling her
Queen Asmaa for nothing.
She's amazing. I love her so much.
And she is a very, very,
very worthy winner.
Isn't she great? Unbelievable.
She's a special human.
She needed to win. It's brilliant.
The only thing that's really
kept me going
and kept me balanced in life,
and especially in the last
few years, has been sewing.
It's my escape, my way to forget
about all the troubles
in the world and at work.
And I don't think I will ever,
ever stop.
I don't know what to do now.
Ah! I've missed you guys!
Everyone's back, everyone's ready
to go
and we're going to get partying.
