JUAN: Hi, I'm Juan Luis
Rubiales from Spain,

and I'm in love with magic.

My wife jokes there are
three people in our marriage,

her, me, and magic.

I invent all my tricks.

No one else knows
how to do them.

Once I was stopped
by the police.

They questioned why have
such a strange props?

And so, I performed a 40 minute
shows on the hood of my car.

No ticket. Just applause.

My wife didn't believe it

until I show her the thank you
email from the police.

Tonight, I reflect on my
family's sacrifices

for my passion.

And I hope to win a
trophy tonight

so my wife can see

that sharing me with magic
has been worth it.

what we'll do...

- Card tricks.
- Card tricks, okay.

I'm gonna do a, but it's
a special card trick

because I invented this trick.

And this a brand new trick,
and a brand new deck.

And I should
stop eating my nails.

Don't worry.

I'm from Spain.

I'm prepared. I'm prepared.

Let me open this.

Oh, wrong way.

[speaks Spanish]

Sorry.

Then I'm going to do the trick.

Maybe you, maybe you have
another, another deck?

I don't.

Let's tell you
a new story, yeah?

Okay, it's not a new story.

An adventure.

Of a very wild knife.

I call this knife
the wild white knife.

Do you know why?

- 'Cause it's a white knife.
- Yeah.

And it's wild
because it seems to be...

In one place

when it really

And is for that they call
this the...

Oh, did you see the other one?

Okay. He, he saw it.

I have two.

Yeah, but this one is the quiet
one because it's red. Yeah?

Only one is wild, okay?

The wild one is the white, not

because it's a white, yeah?

Which one is this?

- Uh, the white one.
- No, no, this is the red one.

Then this is the quiet one.

And if I have here the red one,

which one do I have
on my other hand?

Well, I guess the white one.

No, no, this is green.

And if I have here the green,

which one do I have here?

You have...

No, no, I have nothing here

because it's always
into my pocket.

Ah.

Let me close it
because I know myself

and I'm going to get
to hurt myself, okay.

I'm going to close it.
I have to tell you something.

What happened is that
these knives can change color.

But not any color.

If I want that this one
change into blue,

I cannot do that.

If I want that this
turn into yellow, neither.

Because they can change
color between them.

That means if I want the red
turns into the white,

the white one will turn into...

You don't believe me, do you?

Okay, I will do it
without closing the hands.

And bit by bit. Watch.

I just need to
move it, bit by bit,

bit by bit, bit by bit.

Look, it's almost the half.

The other side the same.

I just need to move like that.

And now, I have here
the white one,

and I have here the red one.

I can do it also with
the green one. Watch.

The green on my hand.
The white on the pocket.

One, two, three.

And now I have here
the white one.

Because the green one
is always where?

Into the pocket. Yes.

But maybe you are thinking,

it's not wild,

they don't change color,

it's just a sleight of hands.

and this is the white.

Let's see if this next act
can score a trophy.

ANJAS: My name is Anja Steyn
and I am 17 years old.

Strange as it sounds,

the pandemic opened up
the world of magic to me.

I'm from South Africa,

not exactly
the center of the magic world.

But when the pandemic struck,

a lot of the magic conventions
started happening online.

Suddenly, I could plug into
magic all around the world.

Two years later,
I somehow convinced my dad

to book us tickets so we
could fly all the way to the US.

My first ever
in-person magic convention.

And it was probably one
of the best experiences

I've ever had.

They had a contest there
for both close-up

and stage categories,

and I competed
in both categories,

and I ended up
winning both of them.

So, now, all these people all
around the world

are helping me with my magic,

as well as my mentors back home.

Penn & Teller, with everyone's
help from all around the world,

do I now have what
it takes to fool you?

Only one way to find out.

Give it up for 17-year-old
South African sensation, Anja.

Fate and chance,

two words that are used
interchangeably

by some people,

but I don't see them that way.

To me, fate is predetermined.
It's destiny.

Something that,
by some force or almighty power,

is bound to happen in one exact
place at one exact time.

Whereas, chance is spontaneous,

chance is free.

Something that could happen
at any place, at any time.

But that's just how I see it.

Both fate and chance are
magical in their own ways.

I'm about to show you
something that could be fate,

or it could be chance.

Watch and draw
your own conclusions.

Penn, to start us off,

I need you to make a very,
very important decision.

Okay.

Do you want the red pill
or the blue pill?

[laughs]

- I'll take the blue pill.
- The blue one, perfect.

Just hold on to
the blue one, thank you,

and we'll use the red one.

Now, Brooke,

what I need you to do

is I need you to deal the cards

one by one, face up,
on the table like this.

And whenever you want to,

I want you to leave
the next one face down.

Okay.

We'll give the cards
a little mix.

One by one face up, and then
when I want to, one down.

- Yes.
- Okay. We're ready?

Yes. Just deal them
one by one face up,

until you want to leave
one face down.

And the reason we're doing this

is that face down card
will be your card.

That way, it'll be random.

Random meaning unknown
to you and unknown to me.

- Do you want that one?
- Yes, please.

- Are you sure?
- Yes.

Do you want to change your mind?

- No.
- Perfect.

May I have the cards back?
Thank you.

Now, had you gone one more,

you could have had
the four of clubs.

In fact, you could have had
any of these cards.

But you chose to stop
at that one specific card.

Why is that?

Did it feel like
some unknown force

was telling you to stop
at that card?

Was it a gut feeling?

Or do you think
it was free will?

Some unknown force.

Yeah?

Well, let's see what card

It should be the only

Now, I wonder, did you

because this really

Well, let's find out.

Penn, you've been holding

I sure have.

I haven't touched it since
I gave it to you, correct?

I want you to please
undo the zip

and take out the deck of cards.

You may give me the holder.

- The deck?
- Oh, the holder.

The holder, yes.

Please take out the deck

I'm left handed
so it's a little harder,

but I'll do what I can.

Now, think of it.

you would stop at?

Now, some of you
might think it's fate,

some of you might think
it's chance.

Either way, it's magic.

but you seemed
like a seasoned pro.

How long have you
been a magician?

Um, I've been a magician since
I was about nine years old,

but I've only really been
performing this much

for like, two,
three years, maybe.

Do you think you're
a natural performer,

or was it hard for you to get
on stage for the first time?

So, when I was younger,

I was really, really shy

and I used to stutter
a lot as well.

And magic was kind of the thing

that got me out of my shell

and got me into a comfort zone.

And so, it was really
difficult in the beginning.

And sometimes now,
it's still difficult.

But this is what I enjoy doing,

and this is how
I express myself.

How someone might sing

or paint a picture, I do magic.

You're so confident,
you're so articulate.

It's really wonderful.

So, I spent a lot of time
creating sharp, visual tricks.

I used to love
performing on my phone,

but then I realized,

I can't see these people.

I can't connect with them.

It's not real.

My inspiration flickered
and was going out.

So, I started performing
anywhere I could

in the real world.

I got addicted
to live reactions.

I wrote a show with
two of my best friends

and we performed it
all over the UK.

That's how I built up
the confidence

to be on "Fool Us".

It's a really big deal for me.

Fool Us was where
my magic journey began.

My dad and I started watching
right from season one.

I was just a kid

but I tried to perform
every trick I saw.

Dad will be watching
at home tonight,

with me on the other side
of the screen.

No matter what happens,
that's a gift.

I'm going to show you something
a little bit dangerous.

Using one of these.

This right here is a mousetrap.

Now, I collect animal traps,
similarly to Penn & Teller.

A couple of years ago,

I learned I could do
something pretty spectacular

with just one of these traps.

So, first things first,
we'll set the trap.

And we're now ready
for my mouse trap trick.

[tense music plays]

[audience laughs]

I'm only kidding,
it's not that kind of show.

It is insane how excited
you folks got there.

[Brooke chuckles]

We're going to do it
on my tongue instead. [audience

[gasps]

Guys, do not try
stopping me, okay?

I do not need this from you.

Here we go.
Mousetrap on the tongue.

See the thing is...

[audience laughs]

mice and humans,
we're quite similar, really.

I mean, mice are attracted
to small blocks of cheese

on wooden boards.

And so are we.

[audience laughs]

Here we go.

Uh...

on the tongue trick.

Um, and none of them were your

First of all, how's the tongue?

And dangerous.

A little bit, yeah.

How did you think that
putting a mousetrap

on your tongue
was a good idea? Like...

So, funnily enough,
me and my flat mate,

were just sat in my lounge,

and there was
a mousetrap on the floor

because we had a mouse problem.

And uh, I picked it up,
and I said to him,

"How much do you reckon
it would hurt

"if I put this on my tongue?"

He said, "A lot."

I was like, "There's only
one way to find out,

"really, isn't there?" And just
snapped it straight on there.

- And you did it, for real?
- Yeah.

Don't try it at home.
Goes without saying, I think.

Are many of your tricks
dangerous like this?

At the moment, I'm actually
working on things

like sawing in half and stuff.

Ooh, I love that.

But I'm the one
getting sawn in half.

of scary, you know.

It's not like people are worried

about you losing your life,

and yet, it does
have the bravery involved.

I like my magic
to be very impossible

This has been my best year
as a magician.

Galicia, up north.

It's a small region
in north Spain,

and it's very rainy
and very green.

Very similar to Vegas, yeah.

How do you dream up these acts?

It depends. Sometimes
it starts with the music.

You hear a song and you say oh,
God, this is a, a magical song.

It would be cool to
do something with it.

And then other times,
it's just the effect.

I like visual magic you know,

where the spectator has to
sit down and just enjoy.

If you have to
think too much or whatever,

it's not my kind of magic.

But yeah, I like visual,
esthetic magic, yeah.

Hmm. Okay, Joshua.
I loved this trick.

- This was so beautiful.

It's a beautiful,
beautiful routine.

It's a combination
of things that uh,

really grow into something
very different.

You know, the smoke
and the bubble stuff

all put together.

You know, Miser's Dream often
has a kind of sadness to it,

and this is kind of whimsical

and very, very fun
and very happy.

Now, do you do this
routine on the street?

No. No, no, no.

Okay, but you are a street
performer, is that right?

I perform some magic on
the street, but never bubbles.

Yeah. Yeah, because there's,
there's that wind problem.

Yeah.

But, but Teller
did a Miser's Dream.

On the street for years,
and silently.

And he performed that there.

We just love the combination.

- Thanks, guys.
- Of the whole thing.

And the Miser's Dream often
has that problem

of the magician pretends to see

an invisible coin in the air,

and then reaches for it.

And that's an impossible
acting thing.

Oh, I see something there,
and now it's real.

And by putting
the bubble in there,

you've solved that whole problem

and really made it
into something,

uh, this is the exact
wrong metaphor,

but something concrete.

[laughs]

And that makes the whole thing
have more of a plot, and better.

And just the whole thing
is just beautiful

and we just loved it.

But we have to add by Teller

did the Miser's Dream
on the street for years.

He knows a little bit about it.

- Of course, yes.
