A lot of things
don't match up in this case.

had apparently not been working
for a long time.

has questioned 56 individuals,
31 were found to have violated
the code of ethics.
[Taufan] I'm worried these tactics
resemble those of the mafia.
Everyone was asking, "What is the motive?"

Did Yosua know a high-level secret?
If Yosua had survived,
would he have exposed a secret
that someone wanted buried?
[Abraham] The public kept asking,
"Why? Why? And why?"
GENERAL MAYHEM: THE k*lling OF BRIGADIER J
[Abraham] In terms of major scandals
in modern Indonesian history,
I would say this is one of the biggest.
I was first made aware of this case
through one of my producers.
JOURNALISDuring an editorial meeting,
he mentioned this m*rder case.
It was reported that a brigadier
named Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat
had died in a shootout at the residence
of Police General Mr. Ferdy Sambo.
I knew then that this case would blow up.
JULY 9TH, 2022

At the beginning of the case

mourning the return of her lifeless child.
Followed by the parents
arguing with the authorities
at their residence.

How can I know what's inside?

if you saw what condition
his remains might be in
following the autopsy?
[Rosti] It would be okay because
I was the one who gave birth to him.
God will give me strength.
Traditionally, for us Batak people,
I am Batak, of course.
This is a sacred tradition.

-who gave birth to him, and his family
-to bid their farewell.

They couldn't even open the coffin.
-Imagine that.

This is a bit suspicious.
They were intimidated and interrupted.
And that violates a tradition
that has been honored by the Batak
for thousands of years.

[Irma] When I first heard Yosua's mother's
heartbreaking cries of grief,
I couldn't sleep for two weeks.
RELATIVE / ACTIVISIn Batak language,
there's a term called "Makuling Mudar."
Which translates as
the crying or calling of the blood.
Meaning, when one member
of the Hutabarat family dies or suffers,
another Hutabarat will feel it too.
Yosua's mother grieved for him
with a sorrow so deep
that no words could ever
fully describe her pain.
This video captures a mother
reacting to what she believes
is the tragic death of her child.

he is no longer with us,
he is always here.
I can always feel him close to me.
He often comes to me in my dreams.
Even when my mind wanders,
I feel his presence.

[Ito] To me,
it's like something out of a drama.
At the time of the incident,
I was playing golf.
I received a call
from the National Police Headquarters.
The Chief of Police ordered me
to meet their team of investigators.
At that time,
everything surrounding the case
seemed rather straightforward.
Two members of Sambo's team
got into a fight
that escalated into a shootout.
One of them was k*lled as a result.
Ferdy Sambo was my former subordinate.
He was a good police officer.
That was my first impression.
He was absolutely uncompromising
when it came to enforcing law and order.
We are committed to ensuring
that the reforms continue.
And I, as part of the police force,
will make sure that that it is enforced.
The commanders need to show strength,
but if they don't, they will be removed.
He was one of the rising stars.
[reporter] A number of big cases
were handled by Ferdy Sambo,
like the Cyanide Coffee case,
the fire at the Attorney General's office
or the Djoko Tjandra case.
I had high hopes
for Ferdy Sambo at the time.
I expected him to reach the top,
at least as Chief of Police
or Head of Criminal Investigation.
[Samuel]
Yosua went for an interview in 2020.
He had the employment documents
when he came here
before returning to Jakarta.
FATHER OF YOSUA
He became Mr. Ferdy's aide shortly after.
And he told us
that both him and his wife were very kind.
When we asked him about his job,
he only had good things to say.
Not once did he mention anything negative
about his employer.
[Abraham] The parents would lament,
"Yosua, you're a good son."
"You have made your boss proud."
He was deeply loved by Ferdy Sambo
and greatly cherished
by Putri Candrawathi.
He was treated like part of the family.
I met with Mr. Samuel Hutabarat.
-Stay strong, Pak Tua.
-Yes.
[Abraham] Mr. Samuel told me
how disturbed he was by what had happened.
And that his son's reputation
was ruined by this case.
But then, Yosua's name
emerged as the principal figure
and perpetrator in a sexual harassment
allegation against him.
JULY 11TH, 2022
[Poengky] On Monday, 11th of July 2022,
I happened to be in my office.
[cell phone ringing]
INSPECTOR GENERAL SAMBO
Suddenly, I got a call.
"Oh, it's from Sambo.
Why would Sambo call me?"
COMMISSIONER
NATIONAL POLICE COMMISSION
Sambo said,
"Ma'am, we would like to invite you
to the National Police Headquarters
to attend a one-on-one meeting with me."
I thought, "Okay, no problem."
I'm the only female commissioner
of the National Police Commission.
Our goal is to transform the police force
into a more professional
and diverse institution.
However, I'm usually
the only female in the room,
which can be quite the challenge.
I have to show that I can be
just as good as the men, if not better.
That afternoon, I went
to the National Police Headquarters.

When I arrived, I was escorted to a room.
Well, it turned out to be Sambo's office.

I was wondering, "Why is it so dark?
Where is everyone else?"
It was all starting to feel a bit strange.

Not long after, Sambo came in.
"I wanted to ask for your help, ma'am."
"Something bad happened."
"My wife was sexually assaulted."
He was crying when he said that.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
I felt deeply sorry for his wife
and was concerned that
she may have been a victim as well.
I kept listening to his account.
"My wife was having a rest
at the official residence,
when without warning, Yosua walked in."
She was shocked
and started calling for Richard
because she remembered that
there were other staff members upstairs.
Yosua was startled and threatened her.
He pulled out a g*n and said,
"If you scream, I'll k*ll you.
Now, shut up."
But she kept screaming
and Yosua ran out of her room.
And that is when Richard arrived.
Yosua started firing
and it turned into a shootout.
Upon returning to the official residence,
Sambo was confronted with the aftermath.
And found Yosua had been k*lled.
Sambo said, "That's how it happened."

Out of the blue,
I got a WhatsApp message
from a journalist.
"Ma'am, what is
the National Police Commission's view
on the case in Duren Tiga?"
I couldn't believe it.
The media already knew about it.
[Taufan] I was in Jakarta at the time,
and not really paying much attention
to the recent news.
CHAIR
HUMAN RIGHTS NATIONAL COMMISSION
Around 10:00 p.m. that evening,
I heard there had been a m*rder.
-A police on police shootout
-At the residence of the head of PROPAM
Inspector General, Ferdy Sambo.
Suddenly, Brigadier Yosua
entered the bedroom
and sexually assaulted the general's wife.
[reporter] Bharada Eliezer had to sh**t
Brigadier Yosua to defend himself.
[Poengky] Richard had saved Sambo's wife.
Richard was a hero.
Some will propose that Richard
be considered for an award
from the Chief of Police.
I said, "Wow, this is really serious."
"This happened at Sambo's house?"
For a while,
I didn't know what was going on.
I was still in the dark
about what had transpired at his house.
But then I got a hint
from a retired police general.
He warned me,
"Be careful while handling this case."
When I asked, "Why?"
He replied, "Come on."
"You know exactly
what kind of person Sambo is."
[Ito] Sambo was the head of PROPAM.
PROPAM is the department
in charge of policing the police.
[officer] At ease!

[Sambo] PROPAM handles every violation
committed by police officers.
People who join PROPAM
must have full integrity, be committed,
and absolutely loyal to this institution.
Not a single PROPAM member
has ever violated the law
because we are committed
to leading by example.
[Martin] Anyone working
under the Chief of Police
can be investigated by him,
and that's why many are afraid.
"I have power."
"I am the police of the police."
"Who can stop me?"
[Riky] At the beginning
of the investigation,
we faced significant challenges
in accessing reliable information
and actual facts.
JOURNALISOften, many journalists,
including ourselves,
initially rely
on the police's version of events.
Yes, yes.
So we accepted
the shootout incident as a fact.
Suddenly, Brigadier Yosua
entered the bedroom
and sexually assaulted the general's wife.
[Mustafa] But when
the South Jakarta Police Chief at the time
said that there were allegations
of sexual harassment,
we immediately felt the police
shouldn't say things like that
without an investigation.
-It's too quick to conclude.
-It's too quick to conclude.
You can't reach a conclusion
without an investigation.
They should have said,
"Investigations are still ongoing."
There must be an investigation.
If he had said,
"Investigations were ongoing,"
we might have believed him.
"Oh, there is something wrong here.
Something's not right about this case."
That's when we said, "Come on. Let's go."
IDENTIFICATION UNIT - POLICE
[Abraham] When we heard that the sh**ting
was initially motivated by an alleged
case of sexual harassment,
we obviously had to find out
what evidence there was.
We would gather
as much information as we could
about what had transpired,
but faced difficulties
because everything was closed off.
So from there, we experienced
intimidation and harassment.
We also had trouble getting in touch
with Mr. Ferdy Sambo.
There's something really, really weird.
[reporter] The head of PROPAM,
General Ferdy Sambo,
could not hold back his tears
when visited by Inspector Fadil Imran,
the head of the Metro Jaya
Regional Police.
Fadil then embraced Sambo,
and patted his protg on the back.
Fadil also kissed Sambo's forehead
and hugged him tightly again.
Watching this made us wonder
what was really going on here.
I said to the media,
"Maybe they think we're like monkeys."
"We can't think for ourselves."
I was with the grieving family.
They were devastated.
Losing him was already unbearable enough,
but then came the slander.
[Sambo] I express my deepest condolences
on the passing of Brigadier Yosua.
May the family have strength
during this hard time.
I openly say this
regardless of what Yosua has done.
There is great pain he has caused
to my wife and family.
I ask for your prayers so that my wife
may recover quickly from her trauma.
[Irma] Eda Rosti embraced me
while sobbing.
She was overwhelmed with emotion.
She told me,
"I want my son's name cleared,
because Yosua was not the person
they portrayed him to be."
Then I came up with a plan.
Let's get people together
and light up 3,000 candles.
My only intention was to pray
and encourage people
not to be intimidated by the police,
and rally support for the case,
so the truth would come to light.
What we can do is to search for the truth.
Who is the m*rder*r? Why was he m*rder*d?
Something like this
can never happen again.
We are ordinary people who have suffered,
parents mourning the loss of our child.
All we ask for is true justice.
I was really moved by this community's
fight against injustice.
We can no longer cover up a case
that happened
in a remote corner of a small village.
This case quickly became a major issue,
attracting attention throughout Indonesia.
THE LOSS OF A LIFE
DUE TO THE EXERCISE OF POWER
IS A WOUND INFLICTED UPON
THE ENTIRE NATION.

[Benny] At first, I was shocked.
Poengky told me that Sambo was crying.

Sambo told us something bad had happened.
Poengky and I took initiative
and suggested we visit
the scene of the crime.
I have a professional background
as a national-level sh**ting coach.
In order to analyze
the direction of the shot,
the sh**ting distance and other factors
It will be easier for me
because it's my area of expertise.
Here we are at the crime scene,
and this is the living room.
And this is where Yosua died.
[Benny] By the time
we got to the scene of the crime,
forensics had already set up a mannequin,
representing a person aiming a shot.
A string was then placed from the firearm
to the point of the g*nsh*t wound
to help determine the flight path
of the b*llet after it left the barrel.
[officer] Yosua stood here, and then
Bang, bang!
And a third. Bang!
[Poengky] This was the head
of the South Jakarta
Criminal Investigation Unit.
The captain seemed a bit nervous.
The story was, there was a shootout
between Richard and Yosua,
similar to what Sambo had told us.
At first glance from what we observed,
it all made sense.
When the media approached us,
these were the details
we shared with them.
I went there myself to hear for myself
and see for myself the available evidence
including the photographs.
This case began
with the sexual as*ault allegations
against Brigadier Yosua.
[reporter] Have there been
any signs of foul play so far?
[Benny] There has been none.
I didn't know much about shootouts,
and I asked myself,
"Is all of this true or not?"
[man] Okay, stand by.
[woman]
Interview Mr. Kamaruddin, take four.
[Kamaruddin] I had a very strong feeling
that he had been m*rder*d.
LEGAL COUNSEL OF YOSUA'S FAMILY
I'm a lawyer,
and have had a passion to fight
for justice since I was a young man.
In the past, my children and my wife
have been actively threatened.
My opponents realize
that I can't be touched,
so they turn
to threatening my family instead.
I asked Mr. Kamaruddin if we were serious
about taking on this case
and defending Yosua.
He asked me, "Aren't you in, too?"
I thought, "Okay, well, hold on."
[chuckles]
"I need to talk to my wife first."
My child was only three years old
at the time.
I can't risk taking on the case
if it means my child
could lose their father.
After careful consideration
and seeking divine direction, I decided,
"Okay, I'll take the case."
I told my wife,
"If anything happens, the first thing
you do is to leave the country."
With the house under police watch,
no one was permitted to open the coffin.
Yosua's aunts waited
until the police became less vigilant
in monitoring the house.
They then quickly opened the coffin.
As it turned out,
Yosua's body had many bruises,
and a b*llet wound
to the back of the head.
[Riky] We obtained photos of the victim
that raised a lot of questions.
The b*llet entry wounds
on Yosua's body were quite odd.
[Martin] Those were the photos
that were given to us.
This fueled our suspicions
that Yosua did not die in a shootout.
He was ex*cuted.
When I spoke
with Samuel Hutabarat, he said,
"How do we do this?
We are up against high ranking generals."
I told him,
"Just sign the power of attorney."
"I will defend you."
Based on our evaluation
of the available facts,
we are convinced that
this was a premeditated m*rder.
The response of the police was divided.
Some welcomed it, some opposed it.
And a few did not hesitate
to share the evidence they had gathered.

The evidence was very detailed.
Who the perpetrators are,
who the subordinates are
It was all there.
There were also several police officers
who called me.
"That's impossible, ma'am.
This doesn't look like a shootout."

Richard was at the top of the stairs,
which meant he was confined
to a narrow space.
He had a wall on his left
and another on his right.
Yosua was in an open area.
He was also the more senior officer
with significantly better marksmanship.
That made us question
whether his story was true.
I didn't know what to believe,
but all these questions kept popping up.
Something definitely felt off.
We finally decided that
it was best for us to go to Jambi,
where Yosua was from.

[Andriani] What I have here in my hands
are Yosua Hutabarat's
final school year exam scores.
Yosua's highest score was in English,
with an exam score of 9.00,
which is very good.
Religious studies was also good.
Yosua really made his parents proud.
He became a role model
for his younger siblings.
But the way his life came to an abrupt end
was very, very sad.
We kept seeing news reports,
alleging that Yosua had done bad things.
We knew him well.
He was not that kind of person.
-It's impossible.
-Correct.
It's unlikely because
he's a person of good character.
Out of all his siblings,
he had the best character traits.
He used to tell his mother,
"Mom, have faith
and stay strong in prayer."
He didn't like sharing his hardships
with his parents.
He only ever told us the good things.
He didn't wanna burden his parents.
REGIONAL POLICE FORCE
JAMBI
This here is from our visit
to the Jambi Regional Police Brimob Unit.
In this photo, you can also see
Yosua's former superiors,
and also some of his friends.
We wanted to find out
why Yosua had been recruited by Sambo.
It was then that we were informed
that Sambo had personally requested
his recruitment.
He wanted someone who was good-looking,
good with computers, and who was tall.
His assignment was to serve
as a bodyguard and driver.
But there really was no need
for any of this selection process.
We were also told
by his former colleagues,
"Yosua is a sn*per.
How could he possibly lose a gunfight?"
That's what Yosua's father told the media.
Even for major holidays like Eid al-Fitr,
he never returned home.
He remained on duty,
guarding high-risk areas.
Given his rigorous Brimob training,
I had complete confidence
in his abilities as a sn*per.
[Poengky] Did you ever hear
that Yosua was a sn*per?
[man] When it comes to sh**ting,
he was good, and he got good grades.
-[Poengky] Did he have a brevet?
-[man] No, he didn't have it yet.
[Poengky]
So he didn't have a sn*per brevet?
[man] He would have
needed further training.
[Poengky]
Okay, so he needs to go back to school.
It turned out
that he was not a trained sn*per,
which explained why Yosua
was defeated in the shootout.
[Benny] I went to the victim's house.
I understood that the family
was highly suspicious of my investigation,
and I could sense
their anger and frustration.
[Ito] The victim's side
refused to accept the outcome,
and pushed for the case to be reopened.
This led to the case
becoming a national issue
with widespread media coverage.
At that point,
I observed some unusual things
and oddities in the case.
We met up with the Chief of Police.
We told him,
"Sir, there is an investigation
that could become a ticking time b*mb."
"What do you think, sir?"
"Are we opening this case
objectively or not?"
There was significant tension
within the Police Headquarters.
Some people supported it. Others did not.
And he said, "I've decided,
this case has to be reopened."
It is in our best interest to ensure that
this investigation is conducted properly.
Because of that, I have set up
a special investigation team
to oversee the process.
The National Police Headquarters asked us
to assist in resolving this issue
because of the public distrust
the police were facing.
[Benny] When the formation of
the special team was officially announced,
I was also invited.
The special team's duty was to recheck
all the witness testimonies,
and all the results
of the crime scene investigation.
We started looking for facts.
From the start, I kept
pressing for answers about the CCTV.
I suspected footage
from two cameras was missing.
There was one inside,
and another just outside the house.
Logically, someone
in Ferdy Sambo's high-risk position,
a senior police officer, for example.
Someone facing potential threats
from a number of enemies
would most likely require CCTV
for security.
"Why was the CCTV
not working during the incident?"
Whenever it was questioned, they claimed
it had been caused by a lightning strike.
It was unbelievable.
I HOPE THE TEAM THAT DAMAGED THE CAMERAS
REALLY GETS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
This theory was so unbelievable
it became a nationwide joke.
SO MANY PLACES YET THE LIGHTNING

The public was disturbed
by the lack of honesty,
and kept asking, "Why? Why? And why?"
Sambo, Sambo, Sambo.
We want to discuss Sambo again,
but there are a lot of irregularities
when it comes to this case.
[Taufan]
Sambo said he didn't know anything.
He was not there when Yosua was shot.
[Poengky]
Sambo said he was going to the house
of a former high-ranking police officer
to play badminton.
NEIGHBORHOOD HEAD SAID
PLAINCLOTHES REPLACED THE CAMERA DECODERS

THE CRIME SCENE WAS TAMPERED WITH
DESTROYING EVIDENCE IS A CRIME
[Kamaruddin] I was sure he was there
when Yosua was k*lled.
POLICE
We checked the neighbor's CCTV footage.
There had to be something.
[mysterious music playing]
The non-functioning CCTV
was inside the house.
But investigators did manage
to discover footage from along the road
near the crime scene.
[Taufan] The CCTV footage was key.
We can see there's a car
parked outside the house.
There is Mrs. Putri, Richard, and Yosua.
In this footage,
Yosua is standing outside the car.
We can see that he's wearing
a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
Mrs. Putri was wearing clothing
with what looks like a brownish tone.
And then, not long after that,
Sambo's car arrived,
accompanied by a single
police motorbike escort.
He's getting out of the car There.
And we can see his aide
running towards him.
They later explained this was because
Sambo's g*n had fallen to the ground.
Not long after,
Sambo was seen walking quite hurriedly,
accompanied by his aide
as they entered the house.
When Sambo arrived, Yosua was still alive,
and it was Yosua
who opened the gate for him.
Now, that's what really shocked us.
[Taufan] This is the moment
the sh**ting happened.
The interaction between Sambo and Yosua
was very brief
and lasted less than two minutes.
A short time later, Mrs. Putri is seen
leaving the house in a hurry.
Now dressed in different clothes.
The CCTV footage
from outside was sufficient
to prove that the claim that Sambo
came home after the m*rder was false.
I also received additional information
from unofficial sources,
suggesting that Sambo was actually
the perpetrator and mastermind.
When I asked my source how they knew
that this was Sambo's doing, they replied,
"We got this information from an insider
who said he was involved
in the conspiracy."
[Poengky] The first people
to come to the crime scene
were not from South Jakarta Police,
but from PROPAM.
Sambo's men handled everything.
[Linda] A few hours
after Yosua's body was taken away,
the crime scene
was immediately cleaned up,
which increased our suspicions.
Police tape should have been put up.
It should have been left as it is.
[Mustafa]
The blood was immediately cleaned up.
[Ito] Indeed, the initial investigators
and Sambo had a close relationship.
They were his former subordinates.
[Benny] Sambo's investigators
were used to managing their own cases,
and as part of that,
they made efforts to conceal any evidence,
so they focused on the CCTV.
They wanted it to match
with Ferdy Sambo's alibi,
that he was not in Duren Tiga
during the shootout with Yosua.
Now, that was what I think
was the turning point.
Even the police at that time,
if they had an investigator background,
they would have trusted us.
Even behind the scenes, they said,
"We believe you."
But the problem is
that their work
had to be based on evidence.
So we asked for Yosua's body
to be reexamined,
and that the second autopsy had to be
carried out by someone from the military,
not the police.
The autopsy result
was the kind of evidence
that spoke for itself.
FIND OUT WHERE THE FORENSIC
AND AUTOPSY PERMITS CAME FROM.
[Kamaruddin]
The autopsy result was kept secret.
And to this day,
we have not received any clarity.
At first, I did not understand
why we needed to perform a second autopsy.

"Was something missing?"

Okay then, if we're gonna do
a second autopsy, we have to do it now.
The second autopsy
would be more complex than the first.
The body had undergone postmortem changes,
and was no longer in the condition it was
when the first autopsy was performed.
Honestly, I was not even sure
how to approach this particular case.
If the results had come back the same,
we could potentially be blamed
for misconduct.
If the results were different,
it might raise even more questions.
SUNGAI BAHAR REGIONAL HOSPITAL
This was indeed very emotional
because we saw how the family
had placed so much hope in us,
eagerly waiting for the results
to come back.
We had to ensure our team did not overlook
anything important to the case,
and that our efforts would lead

Here, we see a histological image
of the skin showing an injury,
as seen right here
by the discontinuity of the epidermis.
The wound is surrounded
by inflammatory cells here,
and right here.
These inflammatory cells could not
have surrounded the particular site
if the person had already died.
So the presence
of these inflammatory cells
in the area around this wound,
indicate that the injury would've occurred
when the person was still alive.
g*nsh*t WOUND
From what we can see here,
the wound at the back of the head
was the final injury,
which is what ultimately k*lled him.
FATAL g*nsh*t WOUND
When a b*llet exits the front
open end of the barrel,
where the b*llet or projectile
exits the weapon,
it rotates as it travels.
If a b*llet enters the human body,
even through soft tissue,
it can, theoretically, be deflected
by about three to five degrees.
Despite the b*llet
penetrating the back of the skull,
which is a relatively hard bone,
it stayed on its trajectory.
It's clear that the shot was fired
from a relatively close distance.
I found this revelation
to be quite unsettling.
How could anyone sh**t someone
in the back of the head,
in such close range?
Who is responsible for this?
The conclusion was that he was shot.
There was no gunfight.
What really happened began to be revealed.
An investigator must always
question information,
and cannot immediately accept
everything as true,
as I experienced
while interrogating Richard Eliezer.
There were many discrepancies
in his account of events.
Most likely due
to his psychological state.
Richard described how after the shootout
Yosua fell to the ground.
Richard then walked
two to three steps down the stairs,
and shot Yosua in the head.
When I asked him why he would
sh**t someone who was already down,
he replied, "To make sure
there was no resistance from Yosua."
As someone who has decades
of investigation experience,
I knew there's something wrong here.
[Edwin] Was this the first time
you shot someone
or have you done it before?
[Richard] No. Never.
But because I How do I put it?
Yosua and I were close friends.
I had just shot him.
I was in complete shock
about what had just happened.
So the voice recording that you just heard
was when I first met
with Bharada Richard Eliezer.
I said,
"Your first shot was in self-defense."
"Your second shot could potentially
be considered self-defense as well."
"Maybe."
"But what about the third, fourth,
and fifth shots?"
"Well"
"If you already hit him with two shots,
why sh**t three more times?"
[Taufan]
Richard was taking an enormous legal risk
by sh**ting someone
who was already helpless.
I was deeply concerned
that Richard Eliezer
was being made a scapegoat in this case.
This young man
is being thrown under the bus.
[Martin] I met the commissioner
of the Human Rights Commission,
Ahmad Taufan Damanik.
He spoke to me and said,
"Richard seems like a good person."
"If you can get through to him,
he might be willing to speak out
against his boss."
I was given assurances
that he would be protected.
RICHARD ELIEZER FACES ETHICS HEARING
The message was, "Relax, Richard.
You will never go to trial."
"This case will be dismissed."
"You k*lled him in self-defense,
so the victims here
are Putri and yourself."

Well, my friend from the Brimob told me,
"We are worried Richard is at risk here."
We know what Sambo can be like
as a person.
[Martin]
We eventually came to the conclusion
that the only person who could bring
together all the pieces of Yosua's m*rder
was Richard Eliezer.
LEGAL COUNSEL OF RICHARD ELIEZER
[Deolipa] I practice law as a hobby.
My other hobby
is being a musician and singer,
which I prefer to being a lawyer.
I hadn't been following the case closely
before I took it on.
I was living in Bali at the time,
sh**ting a music video.
[man] Cut!
I was asked by a high-ranking police chief
to approach Richard Eliezer,
in light of my expertise
as both a lawyer and a psychologist.
Shortly after, I received a phone call
from an external party
whose identity I cannot disclose.
The caller pointed out that
my movements were already known to them.
He then laughed and joked
that a listening or wiretapping device
had already been planted in my hair.
When I asked what their objective was,
the caller urged me to handle this case
as transparently as possible,
and at all costs,
prevent any possibility of a cover-up.
The caller turned out to be
a high-ranking leader.
The purpose of the mission
was clear to me,
and it seemed like a very urgent
and significant matter.
Upon entering
the criminal investigation agency,
security was tight,
and the area was guarded
by heavily-armed Brimob troops.
I was questioned where I was going.
The atmosphere was tense.
When I first saw Eliezer at the table,
he looked visibly scared and tense.
It seemed that he was beginning
to feel the weight of the situation.
To get Eliezer to open up,
we first needed to understand
his psychological state.
What was he experiencing?
How much anxiety, fear, and doubt
was he carrying?
First, I invited Eliezer to pray with me.
[pensive music playing]
Following our prayer,
he began to calm down and said,
"I would like to extend my apology."
"To whom?" I asked.
"To Yosua and his family."
Eliezer wrote down
his confession statement.
I then took a look
at what he had written down.
Wow.
I clutched my chest.
"How could General Sambo do that?"
If I'm not mistaken,
he was promised one billion rupees
by Sambo and his wife.
Yosua had never fired a single shot,
and Eliezer had been ordered
by Sambo to sh**t him.
Yosua was kneeling before Sambo.
While Yosua was in that
vulnerable position,
Sambo ordered Richard,
"sh**t him! sh**t him!"
Eliezer shot Yosua four times.
The remaining shots were fired by Sambo.
Who, as it becomes clear,
is the mastermind.
I revealed Eliezer's testimony
to the media.
Ethically, this violated
the rules of my legal profession,
which prohibits
the disclosure of material facts
related to an ongoing investigation.
However, rules had to be broken
to ensure Eliezer's safety
and to maintain
the accuracy of the report.
By disclosing the material,
there was a chance that
he would receive protection from the LPSK,
making him a justice collaborator.
[Richard] "At my age,
I never imagined I would have
the opportunity to work for and serve
a two-star general,
whom I deeply respected and trusted."
"But as it turned out, I was being used,
lied to, and humiliated."
"I never thought I would experience
such a painful incident
so early in my life."
[Poengky] Eventually,
the case reached a turning point.
Whereby Richard confessed that it had not
been a shootout but an execution.
[Abraham] The shootout between
Richard Eliezer and Brigadier Yosua
was actually part of a planned scenario.
And we know who the director is.
We know who the scriptwriter is.
I am very confident
that Richard Eliezer was forced by Sambo.
There was no way a private
would argue with a superior officer.
He could end up getting k*lled.
To begin with,
it was indeed quite complicated
because there was
a significant systematic effort
from a group of people in the police force
who tried everything
to cover up this case.
The public was deliberately misled
through a coordinated campaign
of deception and lies.
Those who orchestrated the campaign
to defend Sambo,
should now reflect and they should ask,
"How do you feel inside?"
The case really began
with the sexual as*ault allegations
against Brigadier Yosua.
[reporter] Have there been
any signs of foul play so far?
[Benny] There has been none.
The constructed scenario
appeared convincing,
as it was supported
by fabricated testimonies
and a fabricated crime scene.
Everything was consistent
with the narrative that had been created.
It was in sync.
[Desmond]
A member of the Police Commission
simply repeated
the South Jakarta Police's statement,
which was later proven to be incorrect.

from the media and the public.

Sambo's plot was tightly sealed
from the start.
It was difficult to suspect him.
He was the head of PROPAM.
The police overseeing the police.
Why would he lie?
Many people are discussing
the obstruction of justice,
in regard to the m*rder
of Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat.
They were hiding evidence.
They lied about the case.
They withheld information,
and obstructed the investigative process
from the very start of the investigation.
Sambo held a very powerful position.
All he had to do was give orders.
"Train that person
or transfer this person here."
It's easy for him.
As Lord Acton said,
"Power tends to corrupt."
"Absolute power
tends to corrupt absolutely."
[Poengky] He's like the godfather.
Cunning and deceitful.
I met with the Chief of Police.
We discussed that
in order to uncover this case,
the existing power structure behind it
needed to be dismantled at all costs.
The chain of command
among the suspects must be broken first.
So there is no connection
between the superiors and subordinates.
Yesterday, we examined 25 personnel,
and as of today,
that number has increased to 31.
Five police officers are linked
to the Brigadier Yosua m*rder case.
They were allegedly assisting
Inspector Ferdy Sambo
in obstructing justice.
The officers held ranks
ranging from general to commissioner.
How could it come to this?
Frankly, I'm very worried.
If this is how our police operate,
things can become deeply unsettling.
[judge] How do you feel?
I was disappointed, upset, angry.
After 30 years of service,
everything was destroyed
at the very peak of my dedication.
Ferdy Sambo destroyed not only
my husband's career but also his life.
[Taufan] There was a one-star general,
a commissioner, and several young officers
considered the rising stars
of the police force.
They were willing
to follow his instructions,
even though they knew
they were committing a crime.
This reflects our culture.
[Ito] In Indonesia,
we follow a paternalistic system.
It's up to the subordinate to decide
if they are brave enough
to oppose their superior's orders.
"I don't care if there are leaders
who like me or not."
"If something is wrong, I'll speak up."
This is truly what must be instilled
in the future generations
of police officers.
The Chief of Police came forward
and announced that he won't protect Sambo.
Our Special Investigation has decided to make
Inspector General Ferdy Sambo
a suspect in this case.
AMJI ATTAK BASE
[reporter] While awaiting trial,
Sambo will be held at Brimob HQ.
[Taufan] The police investigation
into Sambo was brief.
Perhaps he knew
that we had uncovered evidence
that contradicted his account,
including Richard Eliezer's confession.
He said, "Okay, sir."
"I don't need to be questioned further.
I admit full responsibility."
I said,
"How could you be so cruel
and sacrifice this young man
who came from a poor family?"
He then apologized, saying through tears,
"I am ready to accept
whatever sentence I receive."
[Sambo] I would like to express
my deepest apologies to everyone
who has been affected by my actions.
Foremost, I apologize to Yosua's parents.
There was a sense of relief.
Especially after Ferdy Sambo
and Putri Candrawathi
were named as suspects.
[Putri] I ask for your prayers
that I may have the strength
to get through all of this.
I ask for permission
to send a message
to my children at home and in school.
To my children
who I love.
Study well and keep achieving your goals,
and always do your best.

At that point, I kept asking myself,
"Why did Sambo do this?"
"Why would he go
to such extreme lengths to k*ll Yosua?"
It became clear there had to be
something larger at play.
[Edwin] The first story was that
the sexual harassment had occurred
at the official residence in Duren Tiga.
But this version was then changed.
With Sambo and Mrs. Putri
backtracking on their original account,
that the attack had happened there.
Instead, it was alleged that the incident
had occurred in Magelang the previous day.
[reporter] Here, Mrs. Putri Candrawathi
recounts the events
leading up to and during the incident.
The exact sequence of events
that unfolded in this room
between Brigadier Yosua and Mrs. Putri
remain uncertain at this point.
[Edwin] What happened in Putri's room
between Yosua and Putri
is still a mystery.
Let's imagine
the sexual harassment did indeed occur.
There are
some factors
that just don't line up.
The boss was Mrs. Putri,
and Yosua was her subordinate.
How could subordinates dare to commit
sexual harassment against their boss?
Another thing,
victims of sexual violence
usually do not want to meet,
see,
or live under the same roof
as the person who abused them.
It's odd that the victim,
who was also the person
that had power over the house,
allowed the perpetrator
to continue living there.
The following day, July 8th,
they began the long drive
back to Jakarta together,
with little escape
from each other's company.
APPROXIMATELY 7 HOURS BY CAR
It was hard to believe.
[reporter 1] The surveillance footage
started in Magelang, Central Java.
At 2:03 p.m.,
CCTV captures Brigadier Yosua,
seen here wearing a white T-shirt
as he steps out of a black SUV.
[Taufan] Yosua was still healthy
and very much alive.
Him and a friend
went to use the restroom and then left.
[reporter 2] In this CCTV recording,
Brigadier Yosua was last seen
leaving Inspector General Ferdy Sambo's
private residence at 5:00 p.m.
What turned this incident
into a major public drama
was the role of Putri Candrawathi.
She's a doctor,
so she should be aware
of the medical and forensic procedures
someone who's been r*ped
has to go through.
You must submit an official report
to prove to people,
"Something has happened to me."
A superior-subordinate relationship
between Yosua and Sambo's wife
seems unlikely,
as he would have known the risks.
So if it happened,
there must've been
a different relationship
between Yosua and Sambo's wife.
That's what must be investigated.
[Poengky] At that time,
photos of Yosua's and Putri's
close relationship were released.
We met a friend
who held the same rank as Yosua.
I asked him,
"For Yosua to enter Mrs. Putri's bedroom,
do you find that normal
or do you find that unusual?"
He replied,
"No, ma'am." I was shocked.
"Isn't it strange?"
"Yosua was very close to her
and allowed to enter."
I received information
about a critical piece of evidence
that needed to be followed up.
The personal communications
between Brigadier Yosua
and Mrs. Putri.
None of their communications
were ever collected as evidence,
and no digital forensic analysis
was performed.
Had they been uncovered,
what might they reveal?
Photos began circulating
in the public domain.
I received a message from an informant,
who I believe was a police officer,
alleging that the two
had a very close relationship.
On Yosua's birthday,
Mrs. Putri presented him with a cake,
and followed up with a message
that clearly appeared to suggest
a close personal connection
between the two.
My guess is
there's some sort of relationship
between Sambo's wife and Yosua.
So Sambo felt angry
that his subordinate betrayed him.
Fueled by anger, he lost control
over himself and committed m*rder.
The evidence we have collected
points to this conclusion,
but Sambo continues to deny it.
Rumor has it that Sambo
loved his wife deeply
because she was his first love.
Perhaps that explains
why he refused to blame his wife.
At least that's how I believe it happened.
[Putri] To my beloved husband,

I'm sorry, my love.
As your wife and life partner,
I know I am still far from perfect.
No words can truly express how proud
and grateful I am
to have a life partner with such
a kind and generous heart.

the South Jakarta District Court
will hold the first hearing
in the m*rder case of Brigadier Yosua.
At approximately 9:00 a.m.,
security measures around Ferdy Sambo
appear to have been
significantly reinforced.

Everyone, including our family members,
started talking about the Sambo case.
What I realized was that
everyone shared the same opinion.
That Putri was manipulative, seductive,
and overly obsessed with sex.

You're a witch!
-You'll get the death sentence!
-Old witch!
YOU KEEP ACCUSING A DEAD PERSON
But there are always
two sides to every story.
A journalist has to be
objective, impartial,
and cover both sides.
Because of our interest
in digging deeper into Mrs. Putri's role,
our colleague offered
to arrange a meeting with Mrs. Putri.
Perhaps she will agree to meet with us
and reveal
what really took place in Magelang.
People talk badly of Mrs. Putri.
They claim she's a seducer,
and that she's having an affair
with another man.
She likes wearing branded bags.
Her appearance is always sexy.
It's all very different
from what we see, right?
A mother with no makeup,
her hair tied back in a ponytail,
and dressed simply.
If I had not met Mrs. Putri personally,
I would have shared the same opinion
as the general public.
It was
far from the truth.
Very different from the events
as we saw them unfold during that period.
I still remember she kept doing this
-Her hands.
-clenching her fist like this.
We started talking about the case,
what really happened in Magelang.
She lowered her head
and seemed to be crying.
Then she started to talk.
[Rin] At that time,
Mrs. Putri was not in good health.
She drifted off for a while,
only to be shocked when she realized
that Brigadier Yosua
was already inside her room.
[Hasudungan] I asked a question
because I believed it was something
-that needed to be addressed.
-Needed answering.
"Did penetration happen?" She nodded.
Yes, that means
the incident was, in fact, r*pe.
As a woman, I have to believe
the victim's version of the story,
because if not, who else
would want to hear this story?
So we interviewed
psychiatrists, psychologists,
and the National Commission
on Violence Against Women.
And the story Mrs. Putri told us, uh,
was consistent with what she reported
to the National Commission
on Violence Against Women.
As you may be aware
[Poengky] A friend of mine, Ms. Andy,
from the National Commission
on Violence Against Women, said,
"When I first met Mrs. Putri,
something inside me felt numb."
"She seemed really traumatized
by the events."
[Putri] It was like a knife
reopening wounds
that had never truly healed.
I suffered violence and abuse
at the hands of someone
we trusted completely.
Someone we considered family.
It was an incredibly
painful incident that occurred
on our 22nd wedding anniversary.
In many cases in Indonesia,
when a r*pe occurs,
the woman is blamed.
People come up with excuses like,
"Why was she wearing a miniskirt?"
-Sexy.
-"Why do you look flashy?"
The men are never held accountable.
[Rin] I believe this may be influenced
by patriarchal norms
that tend to scrutinize
women's actions more severely,
while allowing men
to avoid the same level of accountability.
[Hasudungan] As journalists,
we were greatly disturbed
by the situation we encountered,
and our investigative drive motivated us
to conduct a deeper investigation.
We knew we would be facing
a mainstream opinion
that would be difficult to change,
but it was a risk we were willing to take
because of our commitment
to independent journalism.
We knew people would accuse us
of taking sides
and defending the other group
for our own personal gain.
But we acted according
to what we believed was right.
[Hasudungan]
We then continued to dig into the story.
What was Mrs. Putri's real character like?
Through our investigation,
we came to understand that she was a woman
-who chose to submit rather than resist.
-Loyal.
[Hasudungan] Loyal to her husband.
[Rin] She won't act
according to her heart.
She will prioritize her husband.
I remember the words of a professor
from the UI Law Faculty,
"Mrs. Putri is a dentist.
Her family is very well-off."
"She's not stupid, she's not an idiot."
"As an educated person,
she should have taken the necessary steps,
to report the r*pe
and request a medical examination."
Well, maybe he doesn't know
about Mrs. Putri's background
as Rin had mentioned earlier.
She was trying to cover up the case,
so it wouldn't spread anywhere,
all for the sake of her husband's career.
[Putri] "As the wife of a police officer,
I have learned to balance
my responsibilities as a wife, mother,
and as a member
of the Bhayangkari organization."
"Through the guidance and wisdom
of senior members
of the Bhayangkari organization,
I learned the importance
of standing by my husband."
PUTRI CANDRAWATHI'S DEFENSE HEARING
"There are times

"They give me strength when the world

I felt very, very sorry for Mrs. Putri.
The trauma wasn't only the r*pe itself.
It was also the impact
it had on her husband,
and the way his anger
influenced his actions.
His wife was r*ped by someone
he considered part of his inner circle.
A subordinate he cherished.
He didn't believe it!
But when he realized
it had really happened,

"There's no point to any of this!"
He just threw away all his stars!
He had lost self-control
and went on a wild frenzy.
And the anger he felt then
is what we call "kalap."

his eyes were empty, his body trembling,
and his breathing
had grown heavy and strained.
[Sambo] My anger flared even more as
I imagined what had been done to my wife.
Overcome with rage, I confronted Yosua,
demanding to know
why he had treated her with such contempt.
Yet Yosua replied
with impudence and disrespect,
"Commandant,
what do you mean by contempt?"
As if nothing had happened.
My patience and common sense disappeared.
I don't know what I was thinking
at that moment.
I just blurted out,
"Teach him a lesson, Richard. sh**t him."
[Taufan] Whatever the motive was,
as a high-ranking general,
he should not have resorted to m*rder.
He should have enforced the law
by bringing the person
suspected of committing
the sexual crime to court.
This is what we call
an "extrajudicial k*lling."
[Rin] This case was extraordinary.
You couldn't take your eyes off it.
Sambo's image was completely destroyed
by the media coverage.

Night after night,
I was unable to quiet my anxiety.
So I continued digging for answers
like a detective
until I uncovered
what had really happened.
Right from the beginning of this trial,
the focus of the case
was deliberately restricted
to the allegations of infidelity
and the subsequent m*rder.

no evidence of sexual violence
on July 7th was established."
"Instead, the focus will be
on allegations of an affair
between the witness and the victim."
In the end,
they attempted to portray the case
as nothing more than a personal dispute
between Inspector General Sambo
and Brigadier Yosua.
There's a major issue
surrounding Yosua's m*rder.
It also exposed a much larger problem,
corruption within our police force.
[Usman] Was there a secret
that would have been exposed
if Yosua had been left alive?
[Ito] An ADC
not only serves their superior,
but also knows their secrets.
For instance,
if I were a government official,
and a secret of mine became public,
well, it could be the end
of my professional career.
But if I didn't want my secret
to be revealed,
I could take more drastic measures.
I might threaten them
or make them disappear,
that would be the reasoning behind it.
Did Yosua know a secret
someone wanted buried?
Of course, this is still a mystery.

It is dated 2022.

was then under Ferdy Sambo.

that we have substantial evidence.

given the involvement of individuals,
with considerable influence and authority.
[Linda] Sambo shouldn't be portrayed
as an ordinary police officer.
As the head of
the Red and White Special Task Force,

he commanded a special force
-of roughly 200 personnel.

When we met with an intelligence officer,
he also warned us,
"Be careful with Sambo.
Don't underestimate these people."
Our source provided some insight
into the actions
of the Red and White Task Force.
And how they had access
to sophisticated wiretapping equipment.
When we met with this source,
who is also an intelligence officer,
he asked me to turn off my phone.
If my phone was on,
he said it was continuously
recording audio.
And that concern was justified.
-It was legitimate.
-Yes.
We later learned
that Linda was also targeted.
Right.
Intelligence officers came to my house.
We tried to investigate this intimidation.
-Who had actually sent them
-That's right.
and asked them to target us?
Later on, we received information
that this operation was designed
by three high-ranking officers,
one-star generals,
who were also members
of the special task force.
-The Red and White Task Force, right?
-Yes, correct.
[Kamaruddin] When I got to court,
I revealed everything
to the panel of judges,
and I submitted the evidence
that Ferdy Sambo was the head

I got the documents, Your Honor.
I can see here that
almost all top police officials
are listed in the document,
from the advisory ranks upwards,
with the head of the task force
being Ferdy Sambo.
I received information
that they owned and operated
sophisticated police equipment
used to track the movements
of those involved in the case,
myself included.

Allegations of a criminal network
operating within the police force
are currently trending
across social media.
Does evidence suggest that
a criminal network within the police force
is behind the m*rder of Brigadier J?
[Sugeng]
They are granted immense authority.
Yet, to this day,
there has never been
any public accountability
for their performance of their duties,
or how they spend public funds.
He chose to take on five responsibilities.
Narcotics, corruption, money laundering,
human trafficking, as well as terrorism.
These five responsibilities
were particularly attractive
because they involved
the flow of large amounts of money.
It was easy to exploit.
The former head of Indonesian
National Police Unit, PROPAM,
Ferdy Sambo,
has come under increasing scrutiny.
His enormous wealth
has also drawn public attention.
[reporter 1] New reports
on Ferdy Sambo's assets
have made claims
that he owns three luxury homes,
and a collection of high-end luxury cars.
[reporter 2] The wealth owned
by this two-star general
is considered unreasonable
if compared to the salary he receives.
INSPECTOR GENERAL FERDY SAMBO'S PROPERTIES

The house in Saguling was luxurious.
It had an elevator
and a lot of expensive cars.
It was unbelievable.
Where did all the money come from?
I have always believed
that if we want to uncover the truth,
we must trace the money.
This document is unique.
This is a financial summary.
We need to verify this.
There are other currencies
besides the Rupiah,
like US, Singapore,
and Australian dollars.
I did some research
on the company listed above.
As it turns out,
they are affiliated with a gambling site.
Despite being blocked multiple times,
the site remains active.
It was everywhere.
At that time, reports surfaced
suggesting that Sambo
was allegedly involved
in the gambling network
known as Consortium 303.
The network takes its name
from Article 303 of the Criminal Code,
which relates specifically
to gambling offenses.
While the investigation
into the Yosua sh**ting was underway
at the Criminal Investigation Agency,
rumors surfaced midway
that several high-ranking police officers
were suspected of having ties
to online gambling operations.
And it was suspected
that Sambo was the one profiting
from this business venture.
Another piece of information
we received at the time,
which was too important to ignore.
It was suspected
that Yosua had angered Sambo and his wife
because he refused to carry out duties
that he believed were morally wrong
and went against his beliefs.
Specifically, he was instructed
to visit commercial establishments
to collect payments and deposits.
He questioned it, asking,
"What kind of place is this?"
He felt that it went against the law,
as well as his own instincts
and his conscience.
He told Sambo's wife
that he no longer wanted to be involved,
and that he was considering
reporting the matter to the authorities.
A week before his passing,
Yosua apparently left a message
for his mother.
Everyday, he would call and talk to her.
"Have you read the Bible yet?"
"Just place your hand on it."
And every time she placed her hand
on the Bible and opened it,
she would find the Book of Joshua.
It was almost as if he had a premonition
and was trying to send a message,
because in the Bible,
Joshua also faced death.
Then, Eda Rosti told me,
"Did you know that Yosua
was not only a good person?"
"He also wanted to become
a servant of God."
"He wanted to become a pastor."
The possibility that Yosua had planned
to expose his superior's ill*gal practices
before his m*rder
was never investigated.
Are any of those names familiar to you?
Do you recognize
names of public officials or similar?
Can you verify that we are referring
to the same source?
[Linda] At first glance,
this data is interesting.
If we weren't journalists
and simply reviewing this document,
we would assume
that FS stood for Ferdy Sambo.
However, in journalism,
we need solid proof
that the Ferdy in question
is indeed FS.
[Mustafa]
These documents definitely made us want
to investigate these claims further.
Unfortunately, despite meeting
with several people
and checking repeatedly,
the claim remained unfounded.
We are bound
by the journalistic code of ethics,
which requires us
to demonstrate a connection
between this online gambling activity
and Sambo
before making such a claim.
We needed facts to support it,
but we didn't find any.
Multiple sources provided accounts
that were consistent with one another.
-To reinforce each other.
-[Mustafa] Not from the initial sources.
We are journalists, not investigators.
-[Mustafa] Yes.
-So we need strong evidence
to backup our findings.
The online gambling operation
definitely existed.
We know the people behind it.
Beyond Sambo
and the online gambling issue,
we began to feel that there had to be
an even greater force at work
behind the scenes
than we had expected.
[Irma] The Sambo case
should have been the gateway
to uncovering obstruction of justice,
and exposing the networks
behind organized crime.
There were also allegations
of abuse of power
and numerous conflicts of interest,
which could have opened the door
to uncovering a much larger reality.
But after that, the trail went cold
and there was no follow-up.
The task force has been said
to be involved
in narcotics
and online gambling operations.
That is not true.
-We actually fight against that.
-[judge] We'll be the judge of that.
Okay, but that is something
that I must convey during this trial.
The general public would naturally assume
that the Red and White Task Force
raises funds for political purposes
or related activities.
But we need to look at the facts.
Having served in the police,
I know exactly
what the Red and White Task Force does.
I think this matter
needs to be cleared up for the public.
That must involve the rumors circulating
that Sambo received financial incentives
from these sources of income.
And if that is true,
I didn't know about it.
I believe they have chosen
not to be transparent
for reasons known only to them.
The Chief of Police, Listyo Sigit,
has disbanded the special task force,
after its head, Ferdy Sambo, was involved
in a premeditated m*rder case.
The online gambling, the prostitution,
the human trafficking, the drugs
But taking someone's life,
someone who's innocent,
that is the biggest tragedy in the world.

[reporter] Mr. Sambo!
Mr. Sambo, many people have questions
about the death penalty.
Mr. Sambo,
what would you like to say to the public?
Mr. Sambo! Mr. Sambo! Just a moment, sir.
[Irma] The atmosphere during the trial
was something unprecedented in Indonesia.
People came from far and wide.
Countless others wanted to witness it
for themselves.
Thousands of people gathered,
making it difficult to enter,
and even harder to move through the crowd.
They came simply to show their support
by being there in person.
Eda Rosti brought Yosua's photo with her.
-[man] Lower the photo, please, ma'am.
-[Irma] Her statement was clear.
"I am here for my son, Yosua."
[judge] The verdict is in.
"The defendant, Ferdy Sambo,
S.H., S.I.K., M.H
was found guilty by the court
of committing a criminal offense
and participating
in a premeditated m*rder."
"The judges determined
that the evidence presented
support the verdict."
"The defendant is hereby sentenced
to death."
[crowd clamoring]
[judge] Ordering the defendant
to remain in custody,
and determining that the evidence
remains attached to the case file
to be returned to the public prosecutor
for use in further legal proceedings.
[Irma] It was like Indonesia
had won the World Cup.
People were cheering
and celebrated the verdict.
That alone was a historic moment,
marking the first time
in the Republic of Indonesia's history,
that a two-star general,
a high-ranking police officer,
was sentenced to death.
[judge] "The defendant, Putri Candrawathi,
is hereby sentenced to
20 years imprisonment."
[crowd clamoring]
[Rosti] This is my son, Yosua,
that you k*lled.
Putri, can you hear my child screaming?
[Kamaruddin] Mrs. Rosti,
she hugged me many times.
She told me,
"You are
the foundation of our family."
"Never forget us."
"Thank you for everything."
It was the answer to our family's hopes,
and the prayers we had placed before God.
In His greatness,
God answered our prayers with a miracle.
Finally, we saw them receive the justice
they had been longing for.
This case had started with tears,
and it ended with tears.
[Martin] For Yosua's first funeral,
there was no police presence.
No recognition
that he had served in the police.
The family had hoped that
he would receive a formal police funeral.
Yosua was not a perpetrator of any crime.
Therefore, he had the right
to receive the honors
owed to him as a police officer.
[Irma] At last, Yosua was laid to rest,
and given the honor and dignity
he deserved.
[Martin] We regarded it
as a restoration of Yosua's honor,
after the allegations against him
had unfairly damaged his reputation
and portrayed him as a r*pist.
We could finally see a glimpse
of happiness return to his family.
Now, that
Now, that was their first
extraordinary achievement.
Because the family had succeeded
in achieving their dream.
It was very emotional
because the family's wish
was finally honored.
[Martin] As Yosua's case demonstrated,
justice in Indonesia is often described
as something that is not simply granted.
It is something you must
actively claim and fight for.
Now that was our struggle at that time,
a struggle to seize justice.
Justice from whom?
From those who initially claimed
to be victims,
when in fact, they were the perpetrators.
[Irma] The Yosua case
served as an eye-opener,
in that it revealed that similar incidents
had been occurring for a very long time.
However, this case went too far.
It crossed a line
that should never have been crossed.
Because every ounce of power
was used to suppress the truth.
Yosua's death was not in vain,
as it ignited a strong desire
to bring the truth to light.
THE SUPREME COURT, BY A 3-TO-2 DECISION,
COMMUTED FERDY SAMBO'S DEATH SENTENCE
TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT IN AUGUST 2023.
UNDER THE NEW CRIMINAL CODE
WHICH CAME INTO EFFECT IN JANUARY 2026,
A LIFE SENTENCE CAN BE CONVERTED
TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON
AFTER THE CONVICT HAS SERVED
AT LEAST 15 YEARS IN DETENTION.
THE SUPREME COURT ALSO REDUCED
PUTRI CANDRAWATHI'S PRISON SENTENCE
TO 10 YEARS.
While I acknowledge
the Indonesian Supreme Court's decision
to reduce the sentence
from death to life imprisonment,
that does not mean that I condone
what Ferdy Sambo did to his subordinate,
Yosua Hutabarat.
[Muhammad] Many people were happy
when Sambo was sentenced.
When it was reduced,
many people were disappointed.
Even now, there are rumors
that Sambo is actually not in prison,
and instead traveling the world
because he has lots of money.
[Ito] Sambo is currently
serving his sentence at Cibinong Prison.
The question is, "Is he in Cibinong?"
I don't know.
I don't wanna talk about it.
It's sensitive information.
[Mustafa] This was a huge case,
but unfortunately, we have information
that those who were allegedly punished
have returned to their positions.
We were a bit surprised.
The punishment turned out
to be just lip service.
This, arguably,
has to be the darkest scandal
in the history
of the Indonesian Police Force.
Exposing the true extent of corruption
within the institutional system itself.
Eventually,
even those with good intentions
within the police force,
may find themselves trapped
within a corrupt system.
Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed,
I just wanna give up.
People tell me we have to live
with the reality of the situation.
"Bung Usman, you have a family, children."
It's impossible for us to live
ignoring those risks.
So
[sighs grimly]
The question is, "What's next?"
"Did we learn from it?"
I don't think so.
