02x13 - Barrage

Post by bunniefuu »

Four days! Four days of rushing that stinkin' hill and we got nothing!

I don't know how many guys are dead up there; we got nothing to show for it!

All right, Kirby. Take it easy.

Where's Little John?

An a*tillery shell landed right in front of him.

He got a face full of gravel.

Doc is taking care of him down at the aid station.

He's lucky.

What I want to know is how many of us gotta die trying to take that hill?

What's so important about it anyway?

What do you want to do, Kirby? Bypass it?

Suits me.

You just relax, kid.

How many we lose this time, Lieutenant?

They're still counting.

[distant expl*si*n]

- That's ours! - So what?

They must have thrown a million dollars worth of shells on that hill last night.

This morning the Krauts are still there.

Maybe we'll get lucky tonight.

We're not waiting for tonight. From here on, we make our own luck.

They're lifting our a*tillery for a couple hours late this afternoon.

What for?

So we can go up there, try and find their a*tillery.

- In daylight? - That's right.

Kraut patrols in the hillside won't be so thick then.

By the time we get to the top, it will be dark.

If one of us makes it,

The mission will be a success.

Air recon was out this morning.

Figure the Krauts have got a line of machine g*ns along side that hillside.

Almost half way up.

How come they can see the machine g*ns but they can't see the a*tillery?

They can see a*tillery.

Five different pilots have given five different positions in the past 48 hours.

Then why don't we hit all five of them?

We did and they're still there.

Can't be moving that much, the terrain's too rough.

Until we find them and get them out of there.

A lot more are going to die climbing up that hill.

We can get k*lled going up there to find that a*tillery

or we can get k*lled trying to fight it.

Some choice, huh?

Let's move.

Sir! Our a*tillery, it's still going!

It will stop by the time we cross the flats.

Let's move out.

Let's go, Clark.

Clark?

Come on, Clark!

Move!

It'll be dark soon.

We got two hours to get up there, find their a*tillery,

get back and report.

Saunders, you and Clark take the left side of the hill.

Caje, Kirby and I will go on the right side.

[plane flying overhead]

Oh..

I'll see you in the mess tent for coffee.

Make it a beer.

Clark?

You okay?

We're going to have to split up.

Sarge, we'll never make it!

They're too close together.

We're going to have to try.

You take the left side.

There's more cover there.

I'll go first, you wait twenty seconds, then you go.

Okay.

Clark.

Remember now, don't panic.

[speaking German]

Who are you?

Who are you?

Who are you?

You should be dead.

What are you waiting for?

I would bandage you when I could sh**t you?

You lose blood.

Your muscles get too tight.

Did you...

build this fire?

Yes.

Where did you learn to speak English?

In gymnasium, the school.

School.

You are a very good solider, I think.

It would take courage to get all the way up this hill.

I have admiration for you.

Thanks for bandaging my leg.

Be careful!

It will start to bleed again if you're not careful.

I just wanted to stretch a little bit.

What's a matter?

You are a different kind of soldier, aren't you?

How do you know what I am?

You have feelings for your people?

While you were unconscious, you spoke about Clark.

You were worried for him.

Who is this Clark?

He is one of your men?

He is dead, isn't he?

Sgt. Gunnar is not like you.

Who is Sgt. Gunnar?

He is my squad leader.

He is a soldier.

Nothing more.

What is wrong?

I don't know.

I just got a chill.

Ja.

That is expected sometimes.

We will move closer to the fire.

That's much better.

Good.

Once in Berlin, it was so cold my lips would not work.

I played the oboe in the Berlin State Symphony Orchestra.

You're a musician?

Yes.

That's very interesting.

You really think so?

You are my first prisoner.

Must be a big day for you.

You're mocking me.

Sgt. Gunnar mocks me.

He's been doing it for months.

Where's Sgt. Gunnar now?

With the rest of the squad.

Where's that?

Near here.

How come you didn't take me to them?

I thought I should fix your leg first.

[German voices]

Would you like to look at some pictures?

Pictures?

Yeah, sure.

Your name is Hans?

Hans Obecht

Do you like the picture of the orchestra?

Can you see me?

I'm having trouble finding you, Hans.

Let me show you.

It will burn!

Don't turn around!

You pull that trigger and someone will hear you.

Somebody will come and find you.

You can't afford that, can you?

Having someone find you?

If you move again, I will pull the trigger.

Put it up.

The g*n.

You think I'm a fool.

You and Gunnar.

I don't think you're a fool, Hans.

You're a deserter.

If you weren't, you would have taken me back to your unit long ago.

When those soldiers walked by here a little while ago

You didn't call to them. You were frightened.

You're hiding in this cave.

Just like me.

You are my prisoner.

That's right.

And you're my prisoner too.

All I have to do is to shout and those soldier will come running back here.

You won't do that.

That's right.

Because you and I both have the same idea: To get back to the American lines.

You will...

You will take me through?

We'll go together.

Give me the r*fle.

I will keep the r*fle.

It's the American a*tillery starting its barrage. We better leave now.

We can't.

We'll get hit!

That barrage is going to continue.

Now is as good a time as any.

Sergeant?

You know the positions of our g*ns.

You will tell your superiors.

That's my job.

You think that's what I wish?

Do you think I'm a traitor?

Hier!

Komme! Komme!

[yelling in German]

Sprechen Deutsch?

Sprechen Deutsch?

Nein.

Dummkopf! Dummkopf!

Komme.

Hans.

Hans!

Komme.

Why are you here?

How many men came here with you?

You had better tell.

I was alone.

Gunnar says...

That one of your others was k*lled just down the hill.

They are sending for the a*tillery Lieutenant.

They are going to question you further.

Gunnar can be cruel.

Tell him what he wants to know.

Whose side are you on anyway?

I take no sides.

Well, you did.

You did before they came down here.

I do what I can.

But I must stay alive!

There's no more to you than that?

I want no part of k*lling.

For any reason!

That's very noble.

But you are a part of it.

In your country,

Those who do not want to fight, are not forced?

That's right.

But in my country, they stand up and say what they believe beforehand.

They don't wait until they're in the middle of a battle.

I was not given such choice.

Well, you are now!

Gunnar wants to know if you or your men reported the positions of our g*ns.

Sergeant, it would be much easier if you tell him what he wants to know.

Tell him I don't know anything.

Sergeant, talk!

Sergeant, tell him something!

Gunnar, komme.

Gunnar, komme.

Listen, listen.

Sergeant, please.

Listen, Sergeant.

The shelling has caused a rock slide on the road.

The Lieutenant must know the exact positions of your g*ns.

Now. Tonight.

You're wasting your time, Hans.

But they're desperate!

The rock slide has blocked the road.

The Lieutenant cannot move his g*ns. He needs time to prepare the road.

He must quit with your a*tillery.

It's nearly dawn!

His g*ns will be exposed!

No deal, Hans.

He will k*ll you if you don't tell.

And how many of my men will die if I do tell?

I thought you wanted no part of k*lling.

Sergeant, talk to me.

Say something.

Talk?

Just talk!

All right, Hans, what are you trying to pull?

Anything that comes to mind. Come on.

Mary had a little lamb.

Her fleece was white as snow.

And everywhere that Mary went,

The lambs were sure to go.

What did you tell them? What did you say?

Hans!

What did you tell them?

The location of your a*tillery.

How could you? You don't know it.

I saved you from being beaten.

They're not fools, Hans.

They'll find out you were lying.

I don't think so.

The Lieutenant can't see what happens behind the Ashgrove three miles away.

Hans, our a*tillery is no where near Ashgrove.

Then you don't have to worry.

It's good.

I helped nobody.

Stop lying to yourself!

Listen to me.

Your Lieutenant has been avoiding a night fight with us.

Because he knows we have six times the firepower.

I don't understand this.

I'm not a soldier.

Ja, Ja. Good.

Our a*tillery.

They're sh**ting at shadows.

Right now, our a*tillery is zeroing in on this position!

It's nothing!

They've been firing for three nights.

They've been firing blind but now they have a target.

The muzzle flashes from your g*ns.

Then I'll...

I'll tell them that I made a mistake.

Hans!

They'll sh**t you for lying.

Hans, listen to me.

What you did was right.

What you feel is right.

You can save a lot of lives.

Hans!

Hans.

Hans.

Let's you and I leave here.

Hans, its up to you.

Hans!

You got a r*fle, Hans!

I do not hear anything.

No shells.

Nothing!

We're buried alive!

You should have made a stand, Hans.

Now it's too late.

Easy, Hans.

The odds are better now.

The odds?

It's two against two.

We're going to get out of here soon, Hans.

We might have a chance if we can get that g*n.

We don't have it.

But together we might be able to get it.

I don't know how to k*ll.

I've never k*lled.

I'm not ashamed of that.

You think I'm a coward, don't you?

I don't think you know what you are yourself.

He's getting worried about us.

Why we are talking so much.

You were scared your whole life. You don't want to hurt, you don't want to be hurt.

But can't you see, Hans,

Men like Gunnar exist because men like you don't stand up for what you believe in.

Stand up now, Hans.

Stand up now.

Unless you want to die in this Godforsaken cave.

Then you wouldn't be a loss to anyone.

What do you want me to do?

You take one, I'll take the other.

But your leg!

You take one, I'll take the other.

Bandage him!

Wast?

Hans, tell him.

Bandage him!

The Lieutenant is coming to get us out.

We could have lived.

You wouldn't let me.

We're not dead yet, Hans.

You asked what more I could give.

You made me believe I was strong.

But I'm not.

Hans.

Pick up the r*fle.

Pick it up.

He says

It might go easier on us if we give him the g*ns.

Is that what you want?

[yelling in German]

Hey, somebody come in here and tell this Kraut to surrender!

He's already surrendered.

Come on down and get us!

All right, let's lift them out.

Hi, Lieutenant.

How long was I in that cave?

About six hours.

While our a*tillery was knocking out those Kraut g*ns, we moved in some mortars.

Started hitting their line of machine g*ns.

They pulled out just before dawn.

Then you started digging us out?

Yeah.

Their a*tillery Lieutenant waited until the last g*n and got himself captured.

He was the only one who remembered the cave.

You know a lot of guys are going to walk away from this because of what you've done.

Sergeant?

I am...

I want to thank you.

In the cave,

I took a stand.

What are you going to do next, Hans?

My w*r is over.

Your life isn't, Hans.

Later.

I would try to remember what happened in that cave.

I will try.

Yes.

I'll try.
