14x19 - A Connosseur's Revenge!

(narrator) With Ash's second Unova region Gym Badge safely

in hand our heroes now focus their attention on Castelia City

where the next Gym awaits.

- Huh! - Huh! Oh my gosh.

What's that?

[instrumental music]

From the look of it, I'd say this is a brand new Poke Mart!

They must be having their grand opening!

- Axew. - Let's go check it out.

Pika!

(Ash) "A Connoisseur's Revenge!"

[gasps]

- Wow! - Whoa.

- It's huge! - Pika..

There's so much to see!

- Where first? - Axew.

Okay, there!

I'll bet they've got every kind of Pokemon food

and medicine in the world here, wow!

Poke Marts usually have quite an extensive selection

but this one's more extensive than normal.

[gasps]

Beautiful.

[chuckles]

- 'And so many accessories!' - 'Axew.'

- Aw, look, how cute! - Huh?

Don't you think Axew would look stunning

'wearing this beauty?'

This gorgeous Dragon Gem will allow you

to fashionably raise your Axew's Dragon-Type moves' power

one gloriously wonderful time.

- Wow. - Ax.

- Think we'll pass. - As you wish.

But please take a moment and look around.

Whoa, look!

- 'What's going on?' - 'Pika.'

They're waiting in line to get in to a Connoisseur shop

where a Connoisseur checks compatibility.

- "Connoisseur compatibility?" - Right!

They check the compatibility between Pokemon and Trainers

and give them advice.

Wow, so you're not the only Connoisseur?

Of course not, Ash.

Every Pokemon Connoisseur has a rank.

One must be evaluated by

the Pokemon Connoisseur Association.

Then, a Connoisseur is ranked.

'C' class, then up to 'B' class

'A' class and finally the highest ranking, 'S' class.

In order to perform a compatibility check

you have to be 'A' class or higher.

And it just so happens that I am an 'A' class.

Um-um.

(woman) 'Ah-h*, the two of you'

'have a beautiful partnership!'

[squeaks]

Only fully ripened Trainers and their Pokemon

possess such a mellow kind of vibe.

It shows you've raised Minccino well.

That's great. Thanks very much.

- Next in line, please. - 'That's me.'

- Hey, it's a girl! - Correct.

The proper name for a female Connoisseur is "Connaisseuse."

Why don't you have a consultation with her?

I think it's good to get a little feedback

from someone else once in a while.

I'll do it.

Then I can ask her about how compatible

I am with my Sewaddle.

I'll go and browse through some of the Pokemon food products.

Okay, see you later.

- Man, this line is pretty long. - Pika.

- 'Excuse me. You in the hat!' - Huh?

(Burgundy)'You don't have to wait in that silly line!'

- 'I'm a Connaisseuse too!' - Wow!

- So you can see us right away? - Pika?

'Bien sur! Come right in!'

- Thanks a lot. - Bon.

- Whoa-a! - Have a seat.

- There you go! - Ugh. Uh..

I'm Ash, and I'm a Pokemon Trainer.

And this is my best buddy, Pikachu.

- Pikachu. - 'My name is Burgundy.'

I may not look like it, but I'm a highly-skilled

Connaisseuse ranked by the Pokemon

Connoisseur Association.

Wow.

So, besides compatibility

you can also ask me about preparing Pokemon food

battle strategy and even the choice of accessories.

Okay, I'm on a journey to become a Pokemon Master.

I was hoping you could tell me about

the compatibility between me and my Pokemon.

You mean Pikachu?

It's an extremely rare Pokemon

in the Unova region.

[sniffs]

Pikachu even has a rare fragrance.

I don't need to know about Pikachu.

- Hmm? - No doubt we're perfect match.

- Pikachu. - Hmm.

See, I want to ask you about this one.

Come out, Sewaddle.

- Sewaddle. - Bon.

I'd be more than happy to have a look at you two.

Oui alors.

It is evaluating time, s'il vous plait!

Alright. Now, let's see.

h*, h*, h*. Hmm.

So what do you think?

The partnership between you and your Sewaddle is..

...the worst ever!

This Sewaddle's special ability is called Swarm.'

But you would be much more compatible with a Sewaddle

that had the special ability called "Chlorophyll."

- How come? - Uh..

- Just because.. - Ugh!

Are you questioning the advice of a Connaisseuse

recognized by the Pokemon Connoisseur Association?

Look, the truth is that you can

find Bug-Type Pokemon anywhere.

Now take my expert Connaisseuse advice

and go out and catch a different Sewaddle.

- For real? - Pika?

Dawaddle!

[gasps] Sewaddle, return!

Ah, why, the nerve of that annoying

pesky little Bug-Type.

Don't you have any proper Pokemon you can show me?

I've had quite enough of that one

so show me another now.

No thanks. I've got to go.

Didn't you say you wanted to become a Pokemon Master?

Unless you have your compatibility properly

evaluated, that is not going to happen!

Okay, then Snivy.

[chirping]

h*-h*.

[sniffs]

Hmm, it has a pungent aroma

like black pepper with no subtlety at all.

[growls]

'And it's eyes are too sharp'

'like kitchen knives.'

'Now the taste test.'

[moaning]

[growls]

[screaming]

Snivy also has zero respect for my tongue.

You shouldn't say that!

- 'What about my Tepig?' - Tepig..

- A Tepig, eh? - Tepig..

Tepig..

- Tepig. - It's no good.

What do you mean, "No good?"

Tepig just sits there with that silly smile.

It's too good-natured for a Pokemon Battle.

'I don't have to evaluate it to know that'

[Tepig grunting]

- Oshawott. - Man.

Why do you keep doing that?

- Oshawott, aha. - Zut!

I can't believe this childish behavior!

Or that old, stale and musty aroma drifting through the air.

This Oshawott is a complete waste of my time!

Osha-wo-ott!

[grunts]

[whimpers]

(Ash) 'Uh, okay, how about my Scraggy?'

Hmm.

[sniffs]

Scraggy has the aroma of an old shoe..

But, even so..

Scraggy.

You ought to be ashamed!

- Scra-aggy! - Agh!

Enough!

All of your Pokemon are far too acidic for their own good

and they're paralyzing my tongue.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

But before you said Pikachu was a rare Pokemon

and had a rare fragrance or something like that.

The word "Rare" doesn't necessarily mean good.

Frankly, your Pikachu's not as cute as pictures I've seen.

Pika-ch-hu!

[screaming]

Horrible!

All your Pokemon are simply horrible!

You need to make a complete change

of your Pokemon right away!

Sorry, but I just think you're wrong!

Then you don't mind being a loser?

Huh?

You said you want to become a Pokemon Master?

Collect all eight Gym Badges

and make it to the Unova League!

News flash, not going to happen!

- Are you serious? - Bien, sur.

I am a Pokemon Connaisseuse and I know what I'm talking about.

Ash, we were wondering where you ran off to?

When I came back, you were gone and I got a bit worried.

[screams] You!

Pardon?

Wait. I know you!

Wow, you know her?

When did you two meet?

Let's see.

She challenged me to a Battle at the Striaton Gym.

But, if I remember, she lost.

And I've been waiting for this day ever since!

Because this day is my revenge day!

But, what do you want revenge for?

I want revenge not only because you defeated me

but also for all those ridiculous and hurtful things

you said about my Pokemon.

Well, I am a Pokemon Connoisseur.

Oh, yes, sir, Mr. Connoisseur sir!

(Cilan) Your Pokemon have been raised and stored

in an unacceptable manner!

And as a result, they have a horrendous aroma!

Most unbecoming!

Now go wash your face and come back

when you've learned your lesson!

[Cilan laughing]

I said no such thing.

That was close enough!

And I was so hurt and angry.

I swore I'd be a greater Connoisseur than you one day

and I'd evaluate all Pokemon by aroma.

First I was evaluated to get my license.

And soon I gained recognition by earning that license

from the Pokemon Connoisseur Association.

But when I went back to the Striaton Gym for my revenge..

Battle me!

I was told you had gone on a journey.

[gasps]

[groans]

You knew I was coming to get even and you ran away.

I didn't run away at all.

Look, I feel bad that you came after me looking for revenge

but this isn't a Gym and we certainly

can't have any sort of Gym Battle now.

I defeated Chili and earned your Gym's Badge already!

All I care about now is beating you

and taking my place as a top-class Connaisseuse!

Then I'll become world-famous

and I'll finally be able to open up

my own Connaisseuse Shop!

Hold on.

Are you saying this isn't

your Connaisseuse Shop, Burgundy?

Exactly what class of Connoisseur are you, then?

Well, I'm a 'C' class at the moment.

- What of it? - That's so odd.

'C' class is only the beginner's class.

According to Association rules, you're only allowed to work

as an assistant to 'A' class Connoisseurs and above!

So you were lying when you said

my Pokemon compatibility was no good!

No way! Any Connoisseur would have said the same thing I did!

You need a complete Pokemon overhaul!

- There's no need for that. - Huh?

I think Ash has an excellent relationship with his Pokemon.

- Thanks! - Pi.

So it appears there may be a problem

with your evaluation method.

Huh? What did you say?

The relationship between Pokemon and Trainer is a complex one.

You can't always make a good judgment

evaluating by the manual.

I don't need you to lecture me!

I already know a hundred times more than you'll ever know

and I'll prove it to you by beating you

in a Pokemon Battle!

Alright then, I accept your challenge.

[gasping]

Pika.

(group) Who's that Pokemon?

(group) It is Dewott.

Dewott.

[instrumental music]

How does a two-on-two Battle sound to you?

That's fine. Whatever you say.

This is a real Connoisseur Battle.

- I've never seen one before. - Pika!

Well, if you ask me, I think this Battle's

going to be a bit of a pain. Axew.

All right, Dewott, let's go!

- Dewott. - Excellent.

I see your Oshawott evolved into a Dewott.

Grass-Type Pokemon have the advantage over Water-Types.

You bet, it's the perfect time to battle

with Pansage, who's a Grass-Type.

- 'Pika.' - And now, for my Pokemon.

Dwebble.

- Huh? - Hey, that's Dwebble.

Umm, alors, it is evaluating time again.

S'il vous plait!

Oh, my, you're actually using

a Bug and Rock-Type against my Water-Type?

If your ability to choose wisely were a food

'I'd say it had spoiled.'

[laughs] We'll just see.

It's evaluating time!

Put it this way..

...you and your Pokemon are getting a nice taste

of what we have to offer.

Bon.

But if I am victorious

that will finally prove to you

that my evaluation method is correct!

I'm afraid that that will never be the case.

Well, if you're so sure

then promise me that if I win

Ash will replace all of his Pokemon.

Hey, hold on!

This has nothing to do with me.

You hold on!

Cilan said that you had a good relationship

with your Pokemon, oui?

But, according to my evaluation, the compatibility

between you and every one of your Pokemon

is the worst of the worst.

Come on, that's nuts!

Cilan, could you please jump in and say something?

- It'll be fine. - Huh?

Right, Burgundy?

I'll accept your Battle challenge.

- What? - Pika?

I'll put my 'A' class Connoisseur rating on the line.

I'll take full responsibility if I lose

'and Ash's Pokemon will be replaced.'

But you can't promise that for me!

- Pika, Pika! - 'Relax, Ash.'

Hmm?

The word "Lose" does not exist anywhere

in an 'A' class Connoisseur's dictionary.

Come on.

Do you have to drag me in to this?

Pika.

Our Cilan becomes totally different

when it comes to evaluation time.

Yeah, but what happens if he loses?

If I know Cilan, he's got a fool-proof plan.

There are never mistakes in my Pokemon evaluation.

I'll show you the power of a Pokemon that's fully matured.

Dewott, Water g*n, let's go.

- Dew-ott! - Use Protect!

Now use Fury Cutter!

[babbles]

Protect again!

[shrieking]

[grunting]

Ooh! Dwebble's only defending.

Oh, man, a Bug and Rock-Type Pokemon like Dwebble's

no good going up against a Water-Type like Dewott.

- Pika. - But still.

'What is Cilan planning?'

Dew-ott. Dewott!

- 'Dwebble.' - Only defense?

That strategy seems awfully dull

for an 'A' class Connoisseur like yourself.

Choosing Dwebble to go up against Dewott

is the worst choice you've ever made.

We'll finish this with our next attack.

- Dew.. - Water Pulse!

Dew-wott!

[groans]

[groaning]

Uh. Dwebble.

Hmm. Huh?

'How did Dwebble handle that Water Pulse?'

Easy, this Dwebble's special ability is "Sturdy."

Huh?

- That was his plan! - Hold on!

- What's going on with Dewott? - Hmm?

(Iris) 'Dewott's exhausted!'

You're about to taste Dwebble's true power.

Alright, Shell Smash!

Dwebble!

- Dwebble! - X-Scissor, let's go!

Dwe-e!

Use Razor Shell!

[grunting]

[groans]

Uh. Dwebble.

[grunting]

Are you okay?

Hurry up, Dewott, return.

- Alright, Dwebble did it! - Pika!

As soon as Dwebble dropped its defense

its attacks got much stronger!

Axew.

- 'See my method?' - Ugh.

I chose Dwebble to go up against Dewott

because I was sure its special ability "Sturdy"

would allow it to withstand

even a strong Water-Type Attack.

All Pokemon are complex.

That's why you can't rely on a manual for evaluating them.

So you chose a Pokemon with a type disadvantage

just so you could teach me a lesson?

It seems to me you still don't understand

the true nature of evaluating.

A Connoisseur's job isn't simply to say "No"

but to see each and every Pokemon

for its own unique qualities and judge them based on that.

[growls]

(Burgundy) 'Look, Cilan..'

...the battle isn't over yet.

Sawsbuck, let's go!

- Sawsbuck. - What's that?

(Pokedex) Sawsbuck, The Season Pokemon

and the evolved form of Deerling.

The plants on Sawsbuck's horns change depending on the time

of year, and people often use them

to measure the passing of the seasons.

Sawsbuck is my premium brand.

I want to see what kind of evaluation you have for us.

Alright. Great.

Thank you, Dwebble, return.

And now my premium brand, Pansage!

Pansage.

(Cilan) 'Burgundy, your battle style'

reflects a fine blend of strength and courage

but it will be some time before that recipe

has been refined and developed in to one

that is destined to become a true, timeless classic.

All this recipe talk makes me angry and hungry.

Now use Horn Leech!

[grunts]

Sawsbuck.

Dig, let's go!

- Pan! - Oh no, Sawsbuck, stop there!

[grunts]

I detect a secret ingredient

in Cilan's battle style recipe.

But just what is that secret ingredient?

- Burgundy! - Huh?

Now we will explore the full depths of battle.

My recipe revealed!

Huh?

- Pansage. - Sawsbuck, Jump Kick!

- 'Huh?' - Pansage, Dig!

Pansage, b*llet Seed!

[grunting]

[groans]

Seed..!

[groaning]

[grunts]

[groaning]

Cilan! That was sneaky!

Sometimes it is necessary to attack from the front

and sometimes you must approach from the back.

Confusing is another piece of the Battle puzzle.

[gasps]

Use Megahorn!

[grunts]

[roaring]

Perfect!

Now that the time is right

I'll end with an unexpected recipe ingredient

by using Solarbeam!

Pann..

...sage!

[barking]

[expl*si*n]

Victory is now mine.

[groans]

[instrumental music]

[gasps]

Sawsbuck!

[panting]

Are you okay?

- Saws.. - You were wonderful!

Now get a good rest.

[growls]

- Hmm. - Awesome.

Cilan is even stronger than I thought.

Sure is. Thank goodness for that.

Now you don't have to change all your Pokemon.

- Yeah, what a relief. - Pikachu..

[music continues]

- 'Burgundy?' - Huh?

You've got the ingredients for great Connoisseur

potential hidden inside you.

But that recipe still needs time to develop and grow.

The key to anything worthwhile in life is patience.

I'm sick and tired of your lectures.

Listen, I'm going to become an 'S' class Connaisseuse

'and you'll see how strong I really am.'

Good. I'm looking forward to it.

Huh? Mm.

[growls]

I'll have my revenge on you someday for sure!

Wow. She's fast.

That couldn't have been too easy for her.

Pika.

The truth is, being able to pass

the 'C' class Pokemon Connoisseur evaluation

is no walk in the park.

- Really? - Plus..

You've got to give her a little credit

for that spark and spirit.

Hey, Pikachu, I say we show as much spark and spirit

as Burgundy and give it all we've got

at the Castelia Gym.

Pika-Pika!

(narrator) After meeting Burgundy

it appears Ash has learned a bit more
