ASH "A Call for Brotherly Love."
NARRATOR While Ash trains
for his upcoming Driftveil City Gym Battle with Clay
our heroes have a surprise visitor, Chili
Cilan's brother and a Striaton City Gym Leader.
Wow, Chili, what are you doing here?
I'm on a journey, traveling and training. Like you, Cilan.
Traveling and training?
But, Chili, you're one of the Striaton City
Gym Leaders, aren't you?
IRIS Yeah, that's right.
Let's see, Chili uses Pansear, a Fire-type Pokémon
Cress uses Panpour, a Water-type
and of course Cilan uses Pansage, a Grass-type.
Also, anyone who challenges the Striaton Gym
gets to choose the Gym Leader they want to battle.
But how does the Striaton City Gym
function with two of you gone?
Believe me, Cress can handle the Gym by himself.
Cilan, come on. Let's have a battle.
- Huh? Me battle you? - Sure.
I want you to show me what you've learned
from all that training.
And the last thing I want to hear is you telling me
you've forgotten your goal.
Mastering the art of the Connoisseur .
- Of course I haven't. - Then let's battle.
Alright. Challenge accepted.
ASH I'll be the referee, okay?
Both Trainers have one Pokémon each. And begin!
Prepare to be lightly sauteed with our fiery battle style.
Pansear, let's go!
[READY]
Great to see you, Pansear.
[EXCITED] Pansage, you're up.
[READY]
[HAPPY]
Cool. Pansear and Pansage are super good buddies.
Good luck to both of you.
You're the referee, Ash, not the cheerleader.
- Right. - Nothing's changed.
You're battling against my Fire-type Pansear
with your Grass-type Pansage
who's at a disadvantage.
Now isn't that just like my brother?
This is our battle style.
We always did this back at the Striaton Gym.
Fair enough.
But you've been training hard as a Pokémon Connoisseur, right?
Are you sure you really want to stick
with the same battle style forever?
I suggest you save your comments for later
after we've had our battle.
Pansear, Flamethrower.
[FLAMETHROWER MOVE]
Quick, dodge it, Pansage.
[DODGE MOVE]
Alright, Fire Punch.
[FIRE PUNCH MOVE] Dodge it, now!
Pansage.
Cilan. Battling is not just about dodging.

Good job. You deserve a good rest, Pansear. Return.
[DISAGREEMENT] Huh?
[ANGRY]
Pansear, why are you so angry?
[ANGRY]
Are you upset that we lost?
[AGREEMENT]
It's because you missed your Flame Blast
when it mattered most.
[ANGRY]
What's with you?
[ANGRY]
Hey, stop fighting. Please.
Yeah, it looks really bad.
What do you mean?
Chili, it's your fault.
You shouldn't blame Pansear because you lost the battle.
Be quiet! We lost because Pansear blew it.
[ANGRY]
How dare you?
Pansear, stop! PANSAGE [ANGRY]
Chili. Aren't you gonna do something?
Nah, if Pansear doesn't wanna be my Pokémon, fine.
You don't mean that.
Leave me alone!
Shouldn't you do something?
The truth is, I know my brother well.
If I talk to him now, it'll make things worse.
I'll give Cress a call and see what's up.
'Huh? He ran away from home?'
Right, I haven't heard a word from him
since he left and I've been worried sick.
He said he went out on a journey so he could train harder.
Train harder? Wow. Then I think I know what's bothering him.
Now what am I supposed to do?
Chili, what's the matter?
You know, I can't believe I lost to
so many challengers back-to-back.
- Pathetic. - Come on.
A Gym Leader losing to challengers is unavoidable.
It's part of the job.
CHILI 'Maybe, but only after
the Gym Leaders can show'
'how powerful they are, right? I'm losing way too easily.'
CRESS 'I guess..'
Aha! So you agree that I'm a loser too, right?
Oh! But you said..
Cress. Why am I losing challenges so easily?
Mmm.
- Be honest. - Hmm.
CRESS 'Well, you seem to be all
about attacking and offense'
'without any regard for defense.'
'I'm thinking maybe that's it.'
No-no-no-no defense?
Why are you getting so angry?
Because you said I'm doing everything wrong.
I didn't say that.
That's it. We're no longer brothers anymore. Goodbye!
Uh, Chili..
I tried to help, but I hurt his feelings instead.
I see now. But it'll be okay.
I'm sure Chili left because he simply needed some more time
to let his thoughts and feelings blend together.
I sure hope so.
Cilan, you will look after our brother, won't you?
Count on me. We always care for and support each other, right?
That's not about to stop.
- You're right. Thanks. - See you later.
But Chili's got such a short fuse.
He asked Cress for advice but got angry when he got it.
That's part of Chili's individuality.
We're all different.
But, one of the great things about having
two wonderful brothers is we've always been able to
cover for the things the others can't handle.
- Wow. - 'Come on.'
'Let's go see Chili.'
But Cilan, how do you know where Chili is?
He's my brother, right?
Whenever Chili gets frustrated
there's a certain food he just can't resist.
[chuckling] [chomping]
CILAN 'Does this donut shop rate?'
Cilan. Hi.
Cress says hello. He said you just ran off from the Gym.
That Cress. He assumes way too much.
Cress told me he's really worried about you, Chili.
[AGREEMENT] Ah, really?
But I'll bet you a dozen donuts that he's glad I'm not there
so I won't lose any more Gym Battles.
Come on. That's not true.
You sound like a kid when you say that.
- Say what? - Chili, stop.
I want to speak for Cress, as well as myself.
It goes without saying that the three of us
care about each other an awful lot.
The connection we have between brothers
is as strong a family bond as could ever be.
Am I wrong?
No, you're not wrong.
I've had a lot of questions on my mind.
But I'm frustrated because I can't seem to find answers.
'Will you tell me what's been troubling you?'
CHILI Yeah.
I know I tend to lose my temper
and that comes out when I battle.
My battling's all about offense, right?
Right.
Well, Cress said the same thing and I let it get to me.
I didn't want to go back to the Striaton City Gym
so I decided to start my own journey.
But then I began to think
maybe I should change my battle style, after all.
The thing is, I don't know how.
Then, while I was at the Driftveil City
Pokémon Center, I heard you were in town.
So I thought maybe if you and I had a battle
then that would help me answer all those questions.
I see, I think it would be good to show me some of the things
you've learned in your training. That's a good place to start.
-Cilan! - Mmm.
I'd like to do an evaluation of you and Pansear.
That's a Connoisseur's job, right?
Please. That would be awesome.
You've got to find Pansear before you do anything.
So let's all split up and find Pansear.
Well, I happen to know exactly where Pansear is.
ASH/IRIS 'Huh?'

Pansear's just like you.

- Huh? - Huh?
Pansear. I'm really sorry.
I totally feel bad.
PANSEAR [CONCERN]
Know what? I've got a dream.
That you and I will open a Gym.
The very first Fire-type Gym in the Unova region.
PANSEAR [EXCITED]
To do that, we need to master everything
about Fire-types first.
I know you and I can make my dream come true.
What do you say?
[EXCITED]
Looks like they're back to being buddies again.
That's so great.
True. It's their fiery passion that makes them a great team.
The Lightning Wedge is right there.
JAMES I'll pull it out.
[grunting]
JESSIE Excellent work.
'It won't be long before Thundurus'
'the Guardian of Lightning, appears.'
JAMES 'I can't wait.'
GROUP Who's that Pokémon?
GROUP It's Pansear.
[EXCITED]
Alright, let's start with Evaluating Time.
Pansear's a High Temp Pokémon and its Ability is Gluttony.
Gluttony fits you as well, Chili
so you're a good match.
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Pansear's tuft gets warmer when it gets mad
and when that happens, its attacks get really spicy-hot.
And the way Pansear turns its anger into strength
matches Chili to a 'T.'
[CONFUSED]
In my opinion, the two of you are a match
of delicious sheer perfection.
Wow. I knew we made an awesome team.
[HAPPY]
Let's look at Pansear's moves.
It knows Fire Punch, Flamethrower, Fire Blast
and Flame Charge. Isn't that right, Chili?
Yeah. Pretty impressive, right?
CILAN Yes, but they're
all Fire-type moves.
- A simple recipe. - What?
Having a fiery temperament is important
for a great move set, but good balance
is important as well.
- Good balance? - Mm-hmm.
Instead of always using Flamethrower or Fire Blast
why don't you have Pansear learn a different type of move?
A different type of move, huh?
As a Connoisseur, what do you suggest?
Let's see, a Fire-type needs to be most careful
against a Water-type, and Grass-type moves
are especially effective against Water-types.
How about Solar Beam, a Grass-type move?
But don't you think Pansear should learn a defensive move?
I'll tell you what I think.
Knowing Chili and Pansear's personality traits
it may not be the best pairing.
But I think they could come up
with another brilliant flavor.
And that's by mastering an offensive attack.
As you know, offense..
Is the best defense. Yeah!
Exactly right!
Now, that's Connoisseur smarts.
You understand just what makes us tick.
[EXCITED]
Well, that's something I picked up
from my travels with Iris and Ash.
Wait. Traveling with us?
Mm-hmm.
Before going on this journey
I had a tendency to favor balance over all.
I'd get my Pokémon to learn moves from various types
so we'd be prepared to face any Pokémon-type.
But now I realize there's more to it than that.
[AGREEMENT]
By factoring in the Pokémon Trainer
personality, compatibility and bond
and the distinct way the two of them
use each and every move
it helps me to bring out the best they can be.
At least, that's what I think now.
Wow, I see.
Pansear, what do you say we do
our very best to master Solar Beam?
PANSEAR [AGREEMENT]
'Okay, let's start by learning'
how to absorb the sun's energy into your body.
The first thing is to open the door to your heart.
Alright, Pansear, let's do it.
PANSEAR [AGREEMENT]
Pikachu, let's do it too.
[AGREEMENT]
You too, Axew. [AGREEMENT]
Can you hear the voices of the grass and trees?
Sorry. I can't hear a thing.
Once you open your heart, you'll hear it.
Hey, I think I just heard it.
[AGREEMENT] Me too.
[AGREEMENT]
You know, I'm starting to hear it as well.
It's a very soft and gentle voice, but it's there.
[AGREEMENT]
You're doing great.
Alright, now concentrate the sun's energy you absorbed
into one tiny point.
[AGREEMENT]
Try it, Pansear.
[AGREEMENT]
Release it all at once!
[SOLAR BEAM MOVE]
Now, do it, Pansear.
[EXERTION]
No way.
You've got to give it a little more time.
Now let's work on stamina and strength.
AXEW/PIKACHU/PANSEAR [EXERTION]
PIKACHU/AXEW [EXERTION]
[EXERTION]
[EXERTION] [EXERTION]
[EXERTION]
[EXERTION]
[EXERTION]
- Now, let's try it again. - Okay.
Pansage, use Solar Beam.
PANSAGE [DETERMINED] Pansear, you too.
PANSEAR [AGREEMENT]
CILAN First, absorb the sun's energy.
Then, concentrate that power into one point.
Pansear, concentrate.
[DETERMINED]
Next, release it all at once.
Pansear, release it now.
[SOLAR BEAM MOVE]
Pansear, you did it.
[EXCITED]
- Chili, great. - Thanks.
And it was all because of your help.
That was awesome.
Pansear, that was a brilliant Solar Beam.
[EXCITED]
Okay, now that Pansear has learned a new move
let's take a good look at its other moves.
First off, Flame Charge raises your Pokémon attack speed
but it's also helpful in dodging your opponent's attack.
- I get it. - Defense may be your weakness
but when you endure your opponent's attacks
and turn your anger into energy, your moves strengthen.
That makes sense, too.
Oh. I want to have a battle now.
I want to get some practice in before my Gym Battle.
Chili, what do you say we have a battle?
I say, great idea.
Begin!
Huh? Huh?
OSHAWOTT [READY]
Oshawott. You want to have a battle?
[AGREEMENT]
Since Oshawott's a Water-type, it has an advantage
over a Fire-type like Pansear.
The bigger the disadvantage, the more fired up we get.
Use Oshawott, Ash.
Right. Ready to go?
OSHAWOTT [READY]
First move wins. Fire Blast.
[FIRE BLAST MOVE]
Use Water g*n.
[WATER g*n MOVE]
Now Fire Punch. [FIRE PUNCH MOVE]
Counter with Razor Shell.
[RAZOR SHELL MOVE]
[EXERTION]
They're even.
[thinking] Pansear's making up
for its disadvantage with power and momentum.
Now use Flame Charge.
[FLAME CHARGE MOVE]
Tackle, go!
[TACKLE MOVE]
[EXERTION]
Use Fire Punch. [FIRE PUNCH MOVE]
That's quick!
OSHAWOTT [PAINED]
Oshawott.
Alright. Now, Aqua Jet, let's go.
[AQUA JET MOVE]
Pansear, dodge! [DODGE MOVE]
It's just like Cilan said.
Pansear's using its speed to dodge.
Offense is the best defense.
Pansear, counter with Fire Punch.
[FIRE PUNCH MOVE]
They're even again.
But Oshawott's moves should be super effective against Pansear.
[thinking] Chili and Pansear are on a roll
and that's really powering up Pansear's moves.
Its close combat time. Back-to-back Razor Shells.
[RAZOR SHELL MOVE] Block it, quick.
[EXERTION]
How is Chili blocking such a super effective move?
Stay tough, Pansear. Hang in there.
Make sure you get a lot stronger from all of that anger of yours.
[ANGRY] [SHOCKED]
Solar Beam. Let's go.
[SOLAR BEAM MOVE]
Oshawott, dodge it.
Now!
[SCARED]
Oshawott!
CILAN 'Oshawott is unable to battle.
Pansear wins.'
So Chili wins the match.
Pansear, we did it.
[laughs]
[EXCITED]
Oshawott, you were great.
[EXHAUSTED]
CHILI You really helped me out.
Thanks, Cilan.
CILAN Come on, I just did
what any good brother would do.
I think I'll go back to the Striaton City Gym
and make up with Cress.
Excellent idea.
- Chili. Give Cress my best. - Right.
It's obvious that your journey is agreeing with you.
So please, make the most of it. See you soon.
Take care, Chili.
Later.
PANSEAR/PANSAGE [FAREWELL]
- 'Ash.' - Huh?
- Huh? - Huh?
I heard from Clay.
He's back at the Gym and ready for your challenge.
- Yeah? Really? - Your Gym Battle.
It's finally time.
PIKACHU [EXCITED]
