[Angelique narrating] - A séance has been held in the great house at Collinwood.

A séance, which has suspended time and space

and sent one girl on an uncertain

and frightening journey into the past

back to the year .

There each of the Collins ancestors resembles

a present day member of the Collins family,

but the names and relationships have changed

and Victoria Winters finds herself a stranger

in a sea of familiar faces

and among the legends of the Collins family

which have turned to terrifying reality.

[clock ticking]

- My dear,

why don't you go to your room and rest for a while.

- Your father is right, Josette.

You can't do anything for Jeremiah.

You've been sitting here for hours,

you must be tired.

- We'll let you know if there's any change.

- Jeremiah is dying because of me.

I won't leave him.

- Josette.

What?

- Did you feel it?

- Feel what?

- It's so cold.

So very cold.

- Well, I - I don't feel anything.

- I do and I know what it is.

It's the presence of death.

Jeremiah is going to die. - Josette.

- You're tired, you don't know what you're saying.

- I can feel the presence of death,

it's everywhere. All around us.

Jeremiah is going to die tonight.

♪♪

[eerie music] ♪♪

- I confess, I'm frightened, Barnabas.

She keeps saying the same thing over and over again

that Jeremiah is going to die.

- According to the doctor,

he showed signs of improvement.

- Ah, she doesn't believe the doctor.

She thinks that Jeremiah is going to die tonight,

I don't know.

What frightens me most is she isn't crying or hysterical.

She's just quiet.

She's altogether too quite

as if she's mourning for a man who has already died.

As if she feels that she's responsible for his death.

- Why is it she feel responsible?

I was the one that challenged to a duel,

I shot him, his blood is on my hands, not hers.

Yes, but she was the cause of the duel.

And she believes she k*lled him.

She won't leave the past -- that guilt the rest of her life.

Unless - unless you pity her.

- Me?

- Yes.

I mean, her only crime was that she was in love with Jeremiah

and not you. - Perhaps it was.

- Well, if you went to her and told her that,

to tell her that she was involved any way

and that she's not to blame.

- You're asking a great deal of me.

- I'm asking you to pity her.

Help her at the time when she needs your help desperately.

If you ever loved her,

you won't turn away from her now.

I loved her - you know that. - Then help her.

Make her believe you don't blame her

for anything that's happened.

- I'll talk to her. - Ah-hah.

I know you wouldn't refuse me, Barnabas.

Thank you.

- Perhaps Jeremiah will recover

and he and Josette will live very happy.

- I pray it will happen,

maybe some good should come out to all this.

- Yes.

Someone in this house will be happy.

- Monsieur Barnabas.

- Angelique, how is Sarah?

- Oh, she's playing with her doll

and complaining about having to stay in bed.

- She is getting better?

- Yes, her fever is gone.

In a few days, she will be so well

that she would have forgotten that she was ever ill.

- Ah, we're all grateful for that.

When are you going to speak to Josette?

Mrs. Collins is trying to get her to go to her own room.

if I was able to cure Sarah and Sarah has recovered.

- Well, I thought Sarah was going to die,

I was desperate.

you will be free to resume your courtship.

Josette is married to Jeremiah.

There can never be anything between us again.

But I still feel the same way about Josette.

- There was a time when I believed you cared for me,

but you only pretended to care.

long before I realized that I loved Josette.

I'm only a servant.

as you care for a great lady like Josette duPrés.

- That has nothing to do with it.

- Don't say anymore,

I don't want to hear you tell me how little you care for me.

- Angelique.

- I love you.

and you cannot accept me as your wife.

- Can you accept me knowing how I feel about Josette?

- What difference does that make? - Can you?

- I love you Barnabas.

I want more than anything in the world to be your wife,

that's all I know and all I want to know.

[thunder rumbling]

Then I won't break my promise.

- Barnabas?

- If you will accept me as I am,

you will be my wife.

- Barnabas, I will make you happy, I swear I will.

- Are you sure there isn't something I can do for you?

- Please leave me alone.

- How is he?

- Very alone.

For a moment ago, I thought he stopped breathing.

And Josette may be right,

he may not live through the night.

- Has he been conscious?

- No.

- Perhaps it's just as well.

- Did you speak to Josette?

- No.

- Yes and I will, tomorrow perhaps.

- Well, why couldn't you speak to her tonight?

and I couldn't do it tonight if I spoke it might come out.

Perhaps I should hate her, but I don't. I can't.

- Do you forgive her?

- Yes, I suppose she couldn't help

falling in love with Jeremiah.

- And Jeremiah, do you forgive him?

- I want to.

- Do you?!

- He is Josette's husband.

I cannot forget that.

As hard as I try, I cannot forget it.

- You were the closest of friends.

He's dying Barnabas.

For your own peace of mind, you try to forgive him.

- I am trying.

For moments, I succeed.

And then I realize that he stole Josette from me

and then all the bitterness and hatred comes back.

I wish it were not so, but --

- Wait. Wait.

- Is he - is he breathing? I can't tell.

- Who is it? Who's there?

[chime sounding]

Who are you?

What do you want?

Answer me.

Why won't you answer me?

What do you want?

Jeremiah?

What are you doing here?

Have you recovered?

Why didn't they let me know?

Jeremiah?

Don't you talk to me?

Why don't you answer me?

Jeremiah?

Jeremiah?!

- Father? - Josette,

what are you doing here?

- I just saw Jeremiah.

- What?

- I just saw him. He was in my room.

- But that's impossible.

- But he was there. I just saw him a moment ago.

He behaved so strangely.

- No. Josette, my dear,

you couldn't have seen him coming to your room.

- No, you must have dreamed it.

- But he was there. It wasn't a dream.

- Josette, my dear, Jeremiah is dead.

He died only a moment ago.

I woke up.

The clock struck two.

I looked over to the window and he was standing there.

- When the clock struck two? - Yes.

- But the clock was chiming the hour when Jeremiah died.

Two o'clock was the exact moment of his death.
