- On this day, a dark and terrible secret

has been revealed within the great house of Collinwood.

A secret concerning a strange man called Adam,

who has been hiding in the closed off

west wing of the house.

Adam has been told the devastating truth

about his origin, and how it affects his existence.

- You're not like other people, Adam.

You were created differently.

That's why Carolyn can't love you.

She'll never see you not like other people.

It's why she hates me.

She hates me.

♪ [eerie theme music]

- Adam, what was all that racket?

Listen, I almost got caught before I got out

of the kitchen, so I couldn't get you a change of silverware.

You'll have to use the same ones you had at breakfast, OK?

Oh, look, I'm sorry, but I have strict orders from Carolyn

to be very cautious.

I heard someone coming, and I had to split.

You know what I mean?

No, I guess you don't.

Well, look, all you have to do is wipe all these things off

with your napkin.

Hey, where's the knife?

Adam, what did you do with the knife?

Adam, what do you have behind your back?

- Nothing.

- You have that knife in your hand, haven't you?

- No. - Yes, you have.

What were you doing when I came in here?

Adam, give me that knife.

- Just go away.

- I'm not leaving until you let me have that knife.

- Stay away.

- What's the matter with you?

- I will die now?

- What are you talking about?

- I will k*ll myself.

- Adam, what-- what a thing to say.

What are you trying to do?

- I'm different.

Carolyn hates me.

- That's not true.

She doesn't. - Yes, it is.

I know. - No.

I don't know where you got the idea, but it's not true.

Now give me that knife.

- No.

- Adam, now, Adam, listen, Carolyn--

If Carolyn really hated you like you think,

would she give you a place to live like this, how?

Would she take care of you, and feed you,

and send you books and things?

Huh? Why, Adam?

- I don't know.

- Well, look, don't you understand.

If she really didn't like you, she wouldn't be so good to you.

Now, come on, Adam.

Give me the knife.

Just give it to me.

Please.

Look, look, you sit down and eat your food now, Adam.

And I'll find Carolyn, and I'll have her come up

and talk to you.

Mr. Blair, I have to speak to Miss Stoddard.

Have you seen her?

- Yes, I have.

- Well, where is she?

- Are you planning to talk to her or attack her?

You what?

- Somebody must have dropped this outside the kitchen.

I picked it up.

- Oh, did you?

- Yes.

Where is Miss Stoddard?

- She went out a few moments ago with Professor Stokes.

- Oh, well, maybe I can catch her.

- No, you can't.

But you can tell me what's the matter.

- Nothing.

- You've just been badly frightened by something

or someone, haven't you? - No, no.

- Was it Adam who frighten you?

Didn't Carolyn tell you that I know about Adam?

- No, she never said a word.

- But she did.

Now, I want you to tell me what's going on up there.

- I-- I really don't think I should.

- It doesn't matter whether you think you should or not,

you're going to. Now, out with it.

- Well, he just tried to k*ll himself with this.

- I've got to get up there right away.

- I don't think you better do that.

Miss Stoddard might get very mad.

- Now, you listen to me, you better stay here.

Out in the foyer, when Miss Stoddard comes back,

you're to tell you everything that happened.

Is that clear? - Yeah.

Sure.

- Adam.

- I thought you went away.

- Yes.

I have a home of my own now, but I had to come back here today

to speak to Carolyn on some business.

I just spoke to Harry Johnson downstairs, Adam.

He told me what you tried to do.

Is he telling me the truth?

- Yes.

- I want you to tell me why you felt that way,

why you wanted to die?

- Because of what I am.

- What do you mean?

- You said you were my friend.

- And I am.

Perhaps the best friend that you have.

- No.

You told me to grab what I want.

- You mean Carolyn?

- Yes.

Then Professor Stokes tells me that I am different from other

people and Carolyn cannot love me.

- So that's it.

- Yes.

- And you don't want to be different from other people?

- No.

- Why?

- I don't know.

- Are you afraid that other people won't like you?

- Yes.

- Well, now, Adam, I knew you were different

when I first met you, and I became your friend, didn't I?

- You knew?

- Why, of course, I did.

I even told you that in many, many ways

you were far better than other people.

So you see, it's good for you to be different.

- No.

Carolyn hates me.

- You believe that because of what Professor Stokes told you?

- No, I just know by the way she is when I go near her.

- Adam, you may be a very extraordinary man,

but your problem is a very ordinary one.

You hate being by yourself all the time,

and you hate having people reject you.

Isn't that true?

- Yes.

- Well, there's a very simple solution to your problem.

A way that you can be like other people and a way

that you can be just as happy as other people.

Would you like me to tell you what it is?

- Miss Stoddard, I was so afraid you might not be coming back.

- Has something gone wrong?

- You've got to get someone else to bring Adam's food to him.

- Why? Did someone see you?

- No.

- Well, then what's wrong?

- Well, it's just the way that guy carries on it.

I mean, he can't be right in the head.

He doesn't belong in his house.

He belongs in a hospital.

- Harry, I'm not interested in your opinions.

I want to know what Adam has done.

Now, tell me.

- Well, he-- he tried to k*ll himself.

- Oh my god.

Why didn't you come out and find me?

- Well, I was going to, but Mr. Blair

told me to wait down here.

- Mr Blair?

- Yes, he said he would know what to do.

- Is Mr. Blake with Adam now?

- Yes.

He said that it would--

- Harry, who's house do you think this is?

His or mine?

- It's yours, of course.

- Then will you please remember that I

give the orders around here, not Mr. Nicholas Blaire.

The next time you make a blunder like this, Harry,

it'll be the last one you ever make at Collinwood.

- Now, do you understand what you must do?

- Yes.

- And you will do it? - Yes.

- Good.

Now, there's just one other thing.

This must remain our secret.

- Secret?

- Yes.

We mustn't tell Carolyn anything we've talked about.

- Why?

- I'm afraid she might not understand.

- Mr. Blair, you have no right being in this room

without my permission.

- Well, I heard there was a crisis,

and you were unable to handle it.

So I thought I would come up here to see if there

was anything I could do.

- Well, I'm quite available now, and

able to deal with the problem.

If you'd be good as to leave.

- Well, I'm perfectly willing to leave,

but I'm afraid you'll find that there is no longer

a problem for you to deal with.

- What do you mean?

- How do you feel, Adam?

- I feel very good now.

- You do?

- Yes.

- But Harry said you tried--

- Yes, he did try to k*ll himself,

but now he knows that it was a foolish thing for him to do.

Don't you, Adam?

- Yes.

And I am happy now.

- But I don't understand.

A few moments ago, you felt depressed enough

to want to die.

And now you feel very happy?

- Yes.

- Well, if you'll excuse me, I really must be running along.

- Mr. Blair, I would like to talk with you before you leave.

Would you wait for me downstairs, please?

- By all means.

- Adam, are you sure you're all right now?

- Yes.

- I'm going downstairs to talk to Mr. Blair,

then I'll come back up here, and I

want you to tell me everything that happened this morning.

Will you do that?

- There's no need to talk about it anymore.

Everything will be better soon. Very soon.

- Mr. Blair, how were you able to do it?

- Do what?

- Bring Adam under control so quickly?

What did you tell him?

- Well, it wasn't so much a matter of what I told him.

- Than what was it?

- I simply tried to understand his problem.

I feel that he's a man that's been

subjected to a great deal of intolerance or rejection.

When I spoke to him on his own level,

he opened up immediately.

- And that's all there was to it?

- You find that so hard to believe?

- Frankly, yes.

A man has to be terribly depressed to try

to commit suicide.

I don't see how you were able to bring him out

of that depression in the few moments you were with him.

- You saw him.

He feels fine now. - Yes.

I know.

- The problem is you can't help being

suspicious of me, can you?

Even when I do something good.

- I'm sorry.

I'm not really suspicious of what you did.

Actually, I'm very grateful to you

for having taken care of Adam.

If you hadn't acted as soon as you did,

there's no telling what he might have done.

I would like to thank you.

- Well, there's no need to thank me.

I'm very happy to be of service.

And I will hope that you will remember that in the future

and call on me.

- If you can always exercise such control over Adam,

I will call on you, Mr. Blair.

- Isn't it strange how sometimes a near tragedy can bring back

a possible probable result?

- What do you mean?

- Because Adam tried to k*ll himself,

you and I may very probably have become good friends.

At least, I hope so.

- Adam, what are you doing here?

Where have you come from?

- Good evening, Barnabas.

I will come in, and we will talk.

Been a long time since we've seen each other,

hasn't it, Barnabas?

- Yes.

A long time.

- And many things have happened to me.

Many bad things.

- Apparently, some good things too.

You've managed to learn very quickly.

The last time we saw each other you could only say a few words.

- Oh, yes.

Music, food, friend.

- I also remember the first words you put together.

One day you said, if both live.

You heard that phrase on the tape recorder with the music,

didn't you, Adam?

- Yes.

- I never understood what that phrase meant.

I wish you'd tell them.

- No, we will talk of other things, Barnabas.

- Well, what other things?

- You're afraid of me, aren't you, Barnabas?

- I haven't forgotten that you said you wanted to k*ll me.

- I will not k*ll.

But you are right to be afraid of me,

because I could k*ll you if you do not give me what I want.

- It's really incredible how far you've

developed in such a short time.

- I learn very fast.

- But you've developed far beyond the ability to speak.

You're capable of thinking and transforming thoughts

into action.

And it isn't always constructive action, is it, Adam?

- What do you mean?

- You were the one who struck down Joe Haskell in the woods.

You thought you had k*lled him.

You brought the body here hoping that the police would find him

here, and that I would be blamed for his death, didn't you?

- Yes.

- I didn't think that you'd be so capable of such deviousness

by yourself.

Who has been helping you?

- Look, this is not what I came here to talk about.

- Then what do you want of me?

- You did not treat me very good, Barnabas.

You have hurt me and you have made other people hurt me.

- But that isn't true.

- Yes, it is.

- I don't know what you're talking about.

I've always wanted to at least not hurt you in any way.

- But you have hurt me.

- Only to protect other people from you.

Now in the beginning, you did certain things

that you did out of fear.

You were-- you were dangerous, even

though you didn't intend to be.

I had to try and stop you, Adam.

- That is not how you hurt me.

- Then how did I?

- You made me different from other people,

and you did not tell me.

You did not tell me that I was a creature.

- I am not responsible for your creation.

- Yes, you are.

- No, Dr. Lange was.

- Dr. Lange, I do not know Dr. Lange.

I have never met Dr. Lange.

But it is you who I remember standing by the table when

I opened my eyes.

- Ever since then, you thought I created you?

- Yes, you did create me.

- I didn't, Adam.

Now, you must trust me.

I'm not even a doctor.

- Will not help you. Lie to me.

I know what is true.

Whoever created other people made them beautiful.

But you created me, and made me ugly.

And that is why people are afraid of me.

They can't look at me.

They don't want to come near me.

And I am alone.

But I am tired of being alone.

I will not go on being lonely and unhappy.

Ordinary people cannot love me, but someone who is different,

Barnabas, like me, could love me and be with me all the time.

And that is why you, Barnabas, will create for me a woman.
