NARRATOR:The time is .

Here in the past,

Collinwood harbors secrets that can affect

the lives of the Collins family

for many generations to come.

Barnabas Collins has returned to the great house

in this era gone by in an effort to save the lives

of two people in the present.

One by one,

the dark secrets of Collinwood have been unfolded to him

while he has known of the existence

of Quentin Collins' insane wife, Jenny,

who has k*lled before and, on this night,

is ready to k*ll again.

Sometimes, I think I hate you.

There, there, darling.

I hate you for making me feel this way.

Oh, Quentin, I took such good care of Jenny.

Before you came back,

she was the only life I had.

But now you have me.

I know. I know.

I wish you'd look a little more pleased.

How can I?

I feel so deceitful.

We're gonna have to get rid of that conscience of yours.

Oh, Quentin.

You don't know how much she trusted me,

how close we were.

You have me.

Doesn't that make up for it?

[ dramatic music playing ]

[ eerie music playing ]

[ screaming ]

- What are you doing! - BETH: No, Jenny! Don't please!

[ screaming ]

[ indistinct dialogs ]

Put it down, Jenny!

Put it down!

Put it down!

[ Jenny mumbling ]

[ screaming ]

Quentin, let her go. Let her go!

Let her go, Quentin!

Let her go, Quentin, please!

[ dramatic music playing ]

Quentin!

Oh, my God!

[ sobbing ]

[ suspenseful music playing ]

Mr. Collins! Mr. Collins!

Beth, what's the matter?

She's dead! She's dead!

What are you talking about Who's dead?

She tried to k*ll me. It was an accident.

He didn't mean to do it, he didn't mean to do it.

Please try to control yourself and tell me--

No! You have to believe me.

- She had a knife. - Beth, get a hold of yourself

and tell me what's happened.

Jenny.

In my room.

She's dead.

[ dramatic music playing ]

[ suspenseful music playing ]

She's dead, all right.

[ gasping ]

Tell me everything and be quick about it.

I didn't want her to die. I didn't want that.

Now, listen to me.

It's imperative that I know what happened here and why

and you're going to tell me.

You say he was here, protecting you.

Who do you mean? Quentin?

Yes.

- Did he k*ll her? - [ gasps ]

Did he?

Yes, but he didn't mean to.

It doesn't matter whether he meant to or not.

Now, you tell me the story from the beginning.

Why did Jenny attack you?

W-We didn't know she was in--in this room.

- You and Quentin? - Yes.

She was hiding behind this closet.

What were you and Quentin doing here?

Answer me!

Never mind, I'll tell you.

It's very easy to figure out.

You were in Quentin's arms, weren't you?

Yes. [ sobbing ]

And when the poor woman saw that her faithful servant

was betraying her,

her first and only impulse was to k*ll.

Mr. Collins, please--

You can spare me any more of the sordid details.

Where is Quentin?

I--I don't know.

He ran out of the room.

Yes, of course. That's just what he would do.

This came from the kitchen.

See that it's put back where it belongs.

Do as I say!

What are you going to do?

At the moment, I will ask the questions.

Do you have any idea why

Jenny came to your room in the first place?

No.

What are these doing here?

I was going to take them into the village,

f-for the children.

Yes. Jenny's children.

They're Quentin's children, too.

Yes, God help them.

She must have seen them here.

Yes.

Did Quentin see them, too? Does he know?

No, I'm sure he didn't notice.

Well, get rid of them immediately.

But, why?

Don't argue with me. Just do as I say

and when you've finished putting that knife away,

clean up your face.

If anyone asks you what's happened to you,

say that you scratched it by accident.

- Mr. Collins-- - Stop talking and get busy!

There's much to be done

and very little time in which to do it.

[ sobbing ]

[ suspenseful music playing ]

- I'll take that. - Edward?

Edward, I can't stay here now.

You're not going anywhere, Quentin.

You're going to stay right in this house.

[ dramatic music playing ]

Edward, I did not mean to k*ll her.

You do believe that, don't you?

Yes, I believe it.

Only because I know you're too big of a coward

to commit a m*rder.

But, the police won't believe it.

Don't you understand that? That's why I have to leave here.

You're not leaving this house, Quentin, and that's final.

QUENTIN: Listen to me, Edward.

I'm not going to jail for anything

I didn't mean to do.

As much as I would like to see you punished,

you are not going to jail.

What are you talking about?

Listen very carefully, both of you,

to every word that I am going to say.

You, Beth...

entered into the foyer and found Jenny

at the bottom of the stairs.

She appeared to be in a very dazed state.

You took her to your room.

There, she seemed very dizzy.

You left the room to summon help.

When you returned, you found her lying on your bed.

You thought she was unconscious

and when you tried to revive her,

you discovered that she was dead.

Is all that clear?

- That's not true. - Edward, you're crazy.

No one's going to believe that.

That is the story that we are handing out

and we're going to stand by it.

No one will have any choice but to believe it.

Why are you so willing to protect me?

EDWARD: You? You think I'm doing all this to protect you?

Of course not.

Family honor and pride.

- Nothing else matters to you. - Exactly.

And I shall not allow the reason of her death

to being scandal and disrepute to the family name.

Edward, this is one time

you can't protect the family's name.

There are too many people who can ask questions.

In addition to the three of us, only Judith and Dirk

knew of Jenny's existence in this house.

You're wrong.

A lot has happened while you were away this evening.

EDWARD: What do you mean?

QUENTIN: Cousin Barnabas met and talked with Jenny.

He and Judith are searching the grounds for her right now.

They may come back here any moment.

Barnabas is a member of this family.

He has a sense of family pride.

Even if he knew the truth,

I'm confident that he would remain secret.

And what about the two gypsies?

They also found out Jenny was here.

How did they find out?

What makes the difference? They know, and what's more--

Silence can be paid for. They'll do anything for money.

- It's as simple as that. - No.

It's a bit more complicated than that.

What none of us knew was...

Jenny was Magda's sister.

[ dramatic music playing ]

Her sister?

You married a gypsy?

Edward, this is no time for you

to be socially offended.

I'm telling you that there is no use

in trying to cover it up!

- It will be covered up! - How?

[ knocking on door ]

If there are any problems,

I will face them myself.

As for you, and you, Beth,

remember everything I told you.

[ knocking continues ]

I don't want you to move

until I come back.

[ knocking continues ]

Where is she, Mr. Collins?

Do you mean Jenny?

Yes, yes. She ran away.

We're very worried about her.

We know she came here,

because she said she wanted to see Quentin.

Have you seen her? Has she been found?

Yes. She...

She has been found.

Then take us to her.

We will take care of her.

Something is wrong.

What is it?

What happened?

There has been an accident.

Jenny is dead.

Dead?

EDWARD: She... She fell and hit her head

coming down the stairs. She...

She died a few minutes later.

I'm told you're related. I'm very sorry.

MAGDA: I--I want to see her.

EDWARD: Of course.

The body is in Beth's room.

I'll show you there.

MAGDA: No, no.

We want to go alone.

I know the way. You understand.

Yes, of course. I understand.

- Did you hear all that? - Yes.

Edward, I can't face them if they come back in here.

Quentin, listen to me!

They are coming back here

and you are going to face them calmly.

Do you understand? Calmly!

How can I be calm at a time like this?

You are going to do exactly what I tell you to do.

That is your only hope for survival.

[ sentimental music playing ]

Oh, Jenny. Jenny!.

Oh, my poor sister. [ sobbing ]

If you had stayed with us, you would have been alive today.

SANDOR: What might have been can never be now.

Oh, Jenny.

[ sobbing ]

A--a button!

[ dramatic music playing ]

It can only mean one thing.

SANDOR: Edward lied to us.

Yes. She had to fight.

She fought for her life.

There are bruises on her neck.

She was strangled. Strangled to death.

What are we going to do now?

Avenge her death.

EDWARD: And then what happened?

BETH: I couldn't find anyone here or in the foyer,

so I went back to my room and I...

EDWARD: And what?

I--I saw her lying on the bed.

She was unconscious,

but--but when I tried to revive her,

I realized that she was dead.

Good.

Remember every word of it.

And you?

Where were you when all this was going on?

Outside, searching the grounds for her.

[ knocking on door ]

I will do the talking.

Don't speak unless you're spoken to.

MAGDA: We would like to ask some questions.

EDWARD: Of course.

Who saw her fall down the stairs?

No one.

MAGDA: Then how do you know that she fell down the stairs?

Are you suggesting that she was pushed?

MAGDA: Maybe. Maybe not.

We want to find out what happened.

EDWARD: Since she was alone,

I can only assume that she tripped

and fell down the stairs.

Why is she in Beth's room?

Beth found her at the foot of the stairs

and took her to her room.

- Is this true? - Do you doubt me, Madam?

- I have reason to doubt you. - EDWARD: What reason?

SANDOR: Magda, look.

Why are you looking at me? What's the matter?

- SANDOR: His coat. - MAGDA: Not now.

SANDOR: Look at his coat!

[ dramatic music playing ]

EDWARD: What are you doing, Madam?

m*rder*r.

QUENTIN: I don't know what you're talking about.

You k*lled her.

You k*lled my sister.

SANDOR: No, Magda, no!

EDWARD: I told you, your sister had an accident.

[ Magda grunting ]

You are lying.

You are protecting him.

I am telling you the truth.

If you do not believe me, then I'm sorry.

You will be sorry when I tell the police.

EDWARD: The police?

And what will you tell them?

That Quentin strangled my sister.

It was not an accident.

I would think twice before saying that if I were you.

If it comes to the word of a gypsy

versus the word of a Collins,

whom do you think the police will believe?

They will demand proof and what will you show them?

A button, Madam?

A button that Quentin could have lost

and that you could have found almost anywhere?

[ suspenseful music playing ]

I warned you

that if anything happened to Jenny,

you would be sorry.

I will keep my word.

I will set a curse on you, Quentin,

a curse that will last all the days of your life.

You will suffer as she suffered.

You will wish that you were as dead as she is.

Hmm, but it will not be possible.

It will not be possible.

[ scoffs ]

[ Edward mumbling ]

Edward, you've got to stop her.

- I beg your pardon. - She's serious.

I know it. She'll do it.

- She'll do what? - She will put a curse on me.

Don't you understand?

Surely, you don't believe that nonsense, do you?

Well, I do believe it. She can do it, Edward.

- She can do it. - Words, Quentin, words.

That is her only defense.

If you believe that she can harm you with words,

then you are past saving.

Where are you going?

I'm going to find Judith and Barnabas

and inform them of the unfortunate accident.

Beth?

Beth, don't leave.

Beth!

[ suspenseful music playing ]

MAGDA:I will set a curse on you,

a curse that will stay with you

all the days of your life.

[ echoing ] All the days of your life.

All the days of your life.
