VOICEOVER:Collinwood, in the year .

A boy wakens in terror from a dream,

and suddenly, for Barnabas Collins,

there is a frightening reminder of the present,

and of his desperate reason for breaking through time

and going back into the past.

Barnabas.

Yes, Judith?

I'd like to speak with you.

Well, could it wait a while?

There's something I must attend to at the old house.

Well, it's rather urgent.

Something has happened

that has disturbed Jamison a great deal,

and I don't understand why it has disturbed him so,

but I thought you might know.

I might, why?

Well, you know everything about the family.

Who everyone is and was,

and I thought you might know the name

that has upset Jamison so.

It's a name I can't place at all.

What name is that?

David Collins.

Who is David Collins?

Well, suppose you tell me what's happened

to trouble Jamison?

Well, a little while ago, he had a dream,

and he woke up from it screaming.

Screaming what?

Something I don't understand at all.

He kept saying, "David Collins is dead,

David Collins is dead!"

"David Collins is dead."

Are you sure that's what he said?

Yes, he said it very clearly.

What's the matter, Barnabas?

You know who David Collins was, don't you?

Even though he isn't listed in the family history.

Barnabas, this family has lots of secrets.

Is David Collins one of them?

Is something he did deliberately being hidden?

Judith, I can assure you that David Collins

is none of the things that you are imagining.

Who was he?

I will have to speak to Jamison

to find out what this is all about.

He's finally gone back to sleep.

Would you mind wakening him?

This could be very important.

If you say so.

I'll bring him down to the drawing room.

You're still here?

Yes.

You told me that you were going back

to the old house to send Magda off to Boston.

Well, that was my intention when I left your room,

but something's come up.

MAN WITH SIDEBURNS: What?

Something to do with Jamison.

He's upset.

I'll have to talk to him and find out more about it.

You make everything in this family

your business, don't you?

You know, I don't know how we've managed

without you for so long, Cousin Barnabas.

Now, what's upsetting Jamison?

Well, he had a nightmare.

It's not surprising, considering what he's gone through.

I find your attitude toward the family very disturbing.

Why?

Well, it's as if you are watching all

of us through a microscope, as if we were all

subjects for you.

You know, I have the feeling that, uh,

there are two Barnabas Collins,

one walking and talking, moving among us,

the other existing somewhere else,

living an entirely different life.

I can assure you, Quentin, that there is only

one Barnabas Collins.

Then the one has some kind of plan he's following

that has nothing to do with any of us.

Quentin, I think you're building things up in your mind

that don't exist.

Something is wrong with Jamison,

and I want to find out, that's all there is to it.

Well, why, why you and not me?

After all, I'm closer to him,

more concerned about him.

Now, why don't you go about what you started out

to do, helping me.

You won't believe this, Quentin, but my talking to Jamison

is deeply involved with you.

I'm getting more confused, Barnabas.

You told me tonight that you were willing to help me

because my destiny was involved with people you care about.

Who are those people?

Well, Jamison is one.

And who are the others?

What good would it do, giving you names

that have no meaning?

I want to know more about the people

whose destinies I'm involved with,

and I also want to know more about you.

After all, I, uh, I consider it right

that I should know more about you,

since, uh, I'm supposed to trust my life to you.

Quentin, this kind of questioning

is senseless right now.

Not for me.

Barnabas.

Well, good evening, Jamison.

Judith, would you mind if I talked with Jamison alone?

I would mind.

If Jamison has been frightened by something,

I have as much right to hear about it as anyone.

Quentin, Barnabas has asked us to leave the room,

and we're going to leave.

Oh, have you fallen into the habit of utter compliance

with the cousin's wishes, too?

My, now, Barnabas, what is this strange power

you seem to have over all of us?

Quentin, leave the room.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Judith, I'd like to talk to Jamison alone.

I'll talk with you after I've spoken with him.

Of course.

Now, sit down, Jamison.

Now, I understand you had a rather

frightening dream this evening.

Yes.

Well, I want you to tell me all that you can about it,

all that you can remember.

Well, yes, Cousin Barnabas, but

even the awful parts?

Yes, even the awful parts.

It could be a matter of life and death.

A matter of life or death, Cousin Barnabas?

For who?

Well, I can't answer that, Jamison,

until you tell me all about the dream.

Now, go ahead and tell it.

Well, it began in the, the cellar of your house.

My house?

The old house?

Yes.

I used to go there a lot, before you moved in, to play.

But somehow, somehow this was different.

Everything was different.

And then I, I saw you, Cousin Barnabas.

Barnabas?

Cousin Barnabas, wake up!

[ laughter ]

I forbid you to talk like that!

Look at the cake, isn't it lovely?

DAVID: Yes, it is.

VOICEOVER: Well, aren't you going to start cutting it?

Well, I, I can't, not yet.

Because Barnabas and Quentin aren't here.

Barnabas can't be here.

Well, where's he?

Quentin who?

Quentin Collins.

ROGER: He can't be here, he's not listed.

I think we should light the candles.

There isn't much time left.

Carolyn!

Quentin, you sit next to me.

I knew that you'd come to my birthday.

I knew that you wouldn't miss it.

Why don't they see you?

The number of candles is wrong.

ROGER: What do you mean?

They're twelve.

Well, there's supposed to be one extra, to grow on.

Oh, well,

Uh, we decided to dispense with that custom this year.

It's a silly one, anyway.

Let next year take care of itself.

Do you think Barnabas, Barnabas will come

to my--my next birthday?

WOMAN IN RED: It's hard to make plans in advance.

So many things to do.

Candles are all lit.

Would you like to blow them out now?

No, I don't.

Why not?

Because it'll be so cold in here if the candles are out.

WOMAN IN RED: No, it won't, don't be silly!

Oh, I'm so frightened.

CAROLYN: Frightened, of what?

Don't ask him that, Carolyn, I forbid it.

Come on, now.

Be a little man and blow out your candles.

Close your eyes and make a wish.

Can I wish anything that I want to?

Almost anything.

Where did you all go?

I told them I didn't want

to blow out the candles.

I told them that I was afraid,

afraid to be left alone in the dark.

I'm still here.

DAVID: Oh, Quentin!

I wouldn't leave you, David.

I'll never leave you, even after it's all over.

After what's all over?

Your life.

I promise you, David.

I won't even leave you after you've died.

Well, I'm not gonna die for a very long time, now.

I'm only a little boy.

You're a dying boy, David.

No one else would tell you that,

but you do have a right to know it.

Why, why did they all go away and leave me?

The look of death makes the living

very uncomfortable, David.

I learned that, you will too.

I don't understand.

QUENTIN: Why do you think they couldn't see me, hmm?

I don't know.

Because I'm dead, David, and you will be dead too, soon.

[ dark music ]

I don't want to die!

Oh, it won't be bad, David.

When you die, it'll be quick and painless.

Why, it'll be over before you know it, like your life.

Will they miss me?

Mm, for a while.

But after a time, they'll get over it.

And I'll be all alone.

No, no, no, no.

You won't be all alone, David.

You'll be with me.

With you, Quentin?

You'll like that, won't you, David?

Yes, I'll like that, but I don't want to die.

Well, no one wants to die, but you can't pick

and choose, David.

I didn't want to die, either.

But I had to.

Why?

Three things happened, David.

Three things of many, many things.

And if I could have changed any one of them,

if I could have known what they meant

while they were happening,

maybe I wouldn't have died when I did.

DAVID: What three things?

The first was the discovery of a silver b*llet

at Collinwood.

DAVID: Silver b*llet?

Mm, and then the one person who could have helped me,

who could have kept me alive, was m*rder*d.

DAVID: Who was it?

I can't tell you everything, not yet.

What was the third thing?

Ah, that, that was the worst.

The one person in this world that I truly loved

turned against me.

After that happened, there was practically

no time left for Quentin Collins.

Oh, Quentin, I'm so frightened.

Oh, don't be, it won't be so bad.

Now, why don't we sit down and eat your cake?

And then, when the singing was finished,

David Collins was dead!

I woke up screaming because it was so frightening!

Is all that was to the dream?

Yes.

Except for one other thing.

What's that?

Everyone was dressed so strangely,

and he was dead in my dream!

Why was Quentin dead in my dream?

Jamison, no one can answer all the questions

I have a feeling that you can.

I can understand some of it.

I think you know all about it.

I think you can answer all the questions.

JUDITH: We can't go on like this, it has to stop.

Why haven't they been able to capture this thing?

Because they haven't tried hard enough.

What they ought to do is organize a group

to go searching day and night

until the creature is found and destroyed.

In fact, I intend to offer a large reward

for her record.

You're going to buy that seat in heaven yet, Judith.

The boy is in bed, Judith.

May I have a word with you?

Shall we go to the study?

Why can't it be discussed here?

I was talking to Barnabas, Quentin, not to you.

I want to hear what he has to say about Jamison.

There is no need to go into the study, Judith.

Well, did he tell you what his dream was about?

Who was David Collins?

David Collins is nobody that exists.

He is someone that Jamison has created

to act out all the things that are troubling him.

What do you mean?

BARNABAS: Well, for his fear of death, for one thing.

A great deal of the dream is a recreation

of what happened to his mother.

But the dream is so real to him.

Dreams always are when we are having them.

It is only later, when we have a chance to examine them,

that we see how they are a disguise for what is reality.

For instance, in, in Jamison's dream,

Jamison, well he, he saw people as dressed in funny clothes,

as if they were at a masquerade.

Well, now, that is the clue, you see.

There is a disguise there for what he is

thinking and feeling, through the medium of this dream.

It has nothing to do with the reality or what has happened,

but it is a clue as to, well, what is going on in his mind.

Thank you for talking to him.

He was very upset.

Perhaps I should look in on him.

Edward, what's the matter?

Oh, nothing, really.

You look troubled.

I found something rather curious on the path outside.

At first I thought it was a coin,

the way it gleamed in the moonlight.

Well, what was it?

Here, look at it.

It's a b*llet.

Yes, but what's so curious about it,

is that it's a silver b*llet.

What would anyone want with a silver b*llet?

QUENTIN: Three things happened, David.

If I could have changed any one of them,

maybe I would not have died when I did.

The first was the discovery of a silver b*llet

at Collinwood.
