NARRATOR:Collinwood, before the turn of the century.
Barnabas Collins has returned to this time
and to a series of evil and terrifying events
in order to solve a mystery
that will help him save two lives in the present.
But as time has passed,
Barnabas Collins' own dark secret
has come under ever-increasing suspicion.
But now, as the promise of dawn lingers below the horizon,
the old house is the scene of a bizarre waiting game.
And Barnabas Collins knows that his secret
will not last another night.
[ knocking at door ]
Kevin Trask.
You're out rather late tonight, aren't you?
As long as it is still dark,
the hour is not too late for you, is it, Mr. Collins?
I'm afraid I don't know what you mean.
I accuse you of the m*rder of Carl Collins!
m*rder?
Now, no need to act surprised, Mr. Collins.
And no need to deny it.
For I know the truth about you now.
You are a foul and evil creature.
A bloodthirsty creature of the supernatural.
Beholden to Satan,
a sworn enemy of the Almighty.
Mr. Trask--
Stay where you are!
[ dramatic music ]
Sight of the cross disturbs you, doesn't it, Mr. Collins?
And with good reason.
A vampire is powerless before this symbol
of the Almighty.
You have no facts.
You are merely the victim of your own fanatic imagination.
I did not imagine Carl Collins' dead body.
Nor did you witness me k*lling him.
- You merely assume. - And with good reason.
Carl Collins told me what you are.
He saw you yesterday in your coffin.
Carl will never speak again because he is dead.
So where is your proof, Mr. Trask?
You have none whatsoever.
I intend to get proof, here and now.
What do you mean?
If you are innocent,
you should have nothing to fear, should you?
Of course not.
Not even the dawn of a new day?
And what has the dawn to do with me?
A vampire cannot exist in daylight.
I challenge you, Barnabas Collins,
to stay in this room with me until the sun rises.
If you survive the dawn,
then and only then, will I believe you are innocent.

[ rooster crows ]
Are you getting nervous, Mr. Collins?
This is your moment.
You might as well make the most of it.
But we will meet again, Mr. Trask.
I will deal with you then,
as I dealt with your ancestor before you.
[ dramatic music ]
I was right!
You are a disciple of the devil!
But I know your secret now, Barnabas Collins!
I know you are vulnerable during the daytime.
And I will destroy you!
[ rooster crows ]
[ creaking ]
The body was discovered about an hour ago.
Yes, in the drawing room.
I don't know any more than that, Sheriff.
I've questioned my brother, Quentin,
but he's been no help at all.
Yes, I suggest you come out here at once.
And bring along the coroner.
I'll be expecting you.
Goodbye.
[ dramatic music ]
[ door opens and closes ]
Reverend Trask, where have you been?
- I had to go to the old house. - You had no right to go there!
Having discovered the body of my brother, Carl,
you were obligated to stay here--
Mr. Collins, you will understand my behavior
when I tell you what else I have discovered.
Let's go into the drawing room.
[ door shuts ]
Well? Speak up.
Mr. Collins,
the source of evil that has plagued this house
is your cousin, Barnabas Collins.
What are you saying?
Your brother Carl is dead
because he discovered Barnabas' secret.
Fortunately, he was able to tell it to me
before Barnabas had a chance to k*ll him.
What secret are you talking about?
Barnabas Collins is a vampire.
But that's impossible.
- It was Dirk Wilkins who-- - No, no.
Dirk Wilkins was simply used by Barnabas
to divert suspicion from himself.
But the secret is out now.
I witnessed his guilt with my own eyes.
How?
The living dead cannot exist during the light of day.
I challenged Barnabas Collins
to wait for the dawn with me.
He could not meet that challenge.
Indeed, he was forced to vanish before my very eyes
in order to save himself.
Vanish?
He has that power, among others.
- It's incredible. - But true.
Yes, I believe you.
A great many things are beginning to make sense now.
Mr. Collins,
it is imperative that we find Barnabas Collins
and destroy him.
Yes, but it won't be easy
to find out where he keeps the coffin.
I believe there's a very good chance
that we'll find it at the old house.
No, now that he knows you've exposed him,
he wouldn't leave it there.
I was with him until just before dawn.
He couldn't possibly have moved it since then.
I suggest we summon the police
and have them go to the old house.
No.
The police will be left out of this.
We will destroy Barnabas.
And for the sake of this family's peace of mind,
no one else is ever to know
of this terrible secret.
I understand.
We must go to the old house now
and do what must be done.

[ suspenseful music ]
Oh, if you want to see Barnabas--
We do indeed.
And you will make things a lot easier for us
and for yourself if you tell us where he is.
Well, he's away for the day
on some business.
You're lying.
He's somewhere in this house and you know it.
You can't have lived under the same roof with him
all these months without knowing his secret.
I don't know what you mean.
- All people have their secrets. - Now listen to me, gypsy!
Aah!
You know what Barnabas Collins is,
and you've been helping him.
After we've attended to him,
we can see to it that you are punished as well
if you don't cooperate with us!
Let go of me!
Tell us where he keeps his coffin.
I told you I don't know what you're talking about.
We intend to search the entire house.
You might as well cooperate.
Search as much as you want,
but you won't find him 'cause he ain't here.
Aah.
Come along, Reverend.
In a moment, Mr. Collins.
I will give you one more chance, gypsy.
- I am speaking to you! - Ohh!
The Almighty has ways of dealing with those
who do the devil's bidding.
[ loud smack ]
He will smite you for the sins you have committed!
Damnation and hell fire shall be yours.
I think...
I think that you have made a mistake
and mixed yourself up with the Almighty.
Oh, I will remember this.
And I will tell you an old gypsy saying.
Walk fast and misfortune will overtake you.
Walk slow,
and misfortune will catch you.
You'd better not walk slow
because I will never be far behind.
[ dramatic music ]
[ suspenseful music ]
Did you have any difficulty?
No, I got old Wraithway to work as fast as he could.
But you got the silver b*ll*ts?
Yes, six of them.
Good.
We shall have use of them soon.
Have you been studying the plans while I've been away?
Yes.
Your ancestors seemed to have had the penchant
for secret rooms.
You needn't tell me what a curious lot they were.
I realized that long ago.
Well, none of this work would have been necessary
if that wretched gypsy would have been willing to help us.
We must get back to the old house
before she can help him.
I'll be ready in a moment.
here are four secret rooms or passageways in the old house.
We will begin
with the one behind the bookcase in the drawing room.
[ dramatic music ]
[ creaking ]
[ dramatic music ]
[ bookcase rattles ]
- Magda. - Barnabas.
- I didn't know you were here. - I know you didn't.
I didn't have the opportunity to tell you
that I've moved my coffin.
Well you've got to move it again, fast.
Because Edward and that Trask,
they found out about you.
I know that.
It happened this morning before dawn very suddenly.
Have they already searched the house?
Yes, every room and the cellar.
Still, it's not safe to stay here.
Where will you go?
The question is not where,
but do I have the time to move anywhere else?
Well, I will do anything I can for you.
I find your sympathy somewhat disturbing, Magda.
Why?
Because you have something to gain if I am destroyed.
Your Sandor will be free again.
Well I'd rather help you than that Mr. Trask.
Ugh, he's an animal.
But we cannot stand here talking.
We've got to get you out of here.
[ knocking at door ]
I will get myself out.
Now stall them as long as you can.
But, but, tell me, tell me where you go,
and I need to know where to find you.
Don't worry, I will find you.
[ knocking at door ]
[ bookcase rattles ]
[ knocking at door ]
[ dramatic music ]
Out of the way, gypsy!
Now wait a minute. Where do you think you're going?
We are going to search the places
we didn't know about earlier today.
You are wrong.
You searched every room in this house.
It's too late to try to help him now.
We know all about the secret rooms.
Like the one behind that bookcase.
Now stand aside.
I give you one last warning.
There are enough b*ll*ts here to dispose of Barnabas and you.
If you do not step aside, I will sh**t.
It's your choice!
Open the bookcase.
[ dramatic music ]
[ bookcase rattles ]
[ dramatic music ]
Raise the lid.
[ creaking ]
Dead by day.
Alive by night.
He's on the loose somewhere.
Probably in search of another victim.
That woman knows where he is.
And this time she's going to tell us!
Magda!
It's no use, Edward, she's gone.
We should have taken her in there with us.
Doesn't matter.
We have no need of her.
What do you mean?
We have already made considerable progress
by finding the coffin.
But how are we going to find Barnabas himself?
He will have to return to his coffin before morning.
And when he does, he's going to discover
that it is no longer usable.
And without a coffin, he cannot exist.
[ suspenseful music ]
Are you, are you sure you wouldn't like me
to stay here with you?
Yes.
I'll be all right as long as I have this.
Very well, I shall return at dawn.

[ shuffling ]

[ bats screeching ]
[ Charity gasps ]
Don't make a sound, Charity.
You never should have come here.
I'm sorry, but I had to.
If my father were to find you here--
He's already looking for me.
- Why? - Because he knows all about me.
Oh no.
Now listen to me, Charity.
I am in serious trouble and you must help me.
Help you.
How?
Your father wouldn't look for me here.
So at the school.
Here?
Yes, you must hide me here for a while.
No.
No, I can't do that.
Not only must you do it, but you must protect me.
Barnabas, please, it's much too dangerous.
There is danger for me everywhere now.
Except when I'm with you.
But he would know.
He always finds out whenever I'm trying
to hide anything from him.
Charity, look at me.
No, no, I don't want to.
Look in my eyes.
Now, Charity.
[ dramatic music ]
You haven't the will to resist me.
Do you understand that?
Yes.
BARNABAS: Now listen carefully.
Because you must not fail me.
I am listening.
I must find another coffin to rest in.
Do you understand?
Yes.
Tell me what you need.
Besides that, I need something else.
What I need is a small amount of earth from the grave.
That grave is in the basement of the old house.
It is too dangerous for me to go there,
so you must get it for me.
I will go immediately.
Now wait.
It isn't as simple as that.
Edward Collins is guarding the house.
If he were to see you there,
you wouldn't have a chance to explain yourself.
Then how will I be able to get
the earth you need?
Because I will tell you of another way
to get to the basement of the old house.
He will never know that you've been there.
[ omninous music ]
[ Charity gasps ]
[ metal clinks ]
Who's there?
[ dramatic music ]
[ door creaks ]
EDWARD: Who is down there? Answer me!
[ footsteps ]
[ dramatic music ]
[ Edward gasps ]
Come out of there!
I warn you, whoever you are.
I'm prepared to use this g*n.
Now come out!
[ tense music ]
[ eerie music ]
