NARRATOR: Daylight has faded into night,
and somewhere on the vast Collins estate
a young woman, herself the possessed victim
of the infamous Count Petofi,
wanders alone in a state of shock,
for she has had a frightening vision
in which she witnessed the imminent death
of Quentin Collins.
[ somber music ]
Oh, Quentin,
Quentin, what are we going to do?
We got so little time, we have to do something.
[ sobbing ]
[ gasps ]
What are you doing out here on alone?
Oh, Magda, help me, please help me.
What's the matter with you?
It's not me, it's...
it's Quentin.
What about Quentin?
It's only days until...
Until what? Until what? Speak up.
On the th day of September,
Quentin is going to die.
[ dramatic music ]
[ eerie music ]
[ sobbing ]
How--How do you know that Quentin will die?
How did you find this out?
[ crying ] I've seen it in a vision.
You're crazy.
Oh, if only I was,
if only it was me instead of him.
Oh, if only I just didn't have this awful power.
It's made me so miserable.
What power?
I have visions all the time,
only I never see good things happen,
only death and destruction.
Tell me what-- what else did you see
in this--in this vision?
Nothing,
only Quentin lying on the floor
up in the tower room, all bloody.
Oh, it was awful. [ sobs ]
Listen, we can't stay here,
I take you back to Collinwood, come.
[ sobbing ]
QUENTIN: Welcome home, reverend.
Good evening, Quentin.
How are things at the Rushmore Sanitarium?
Judith's condition has improved considerably.
Oh, what a pity.
Perhaps you can put some arsenic into her tea
the next time you go to visit her.
You've been drinking again I see.
Just this one.
- Care to join me? - I would not.
You know I don't approve of intoxicating beverages.
If I had my way, they would be forbidden in this house.
Too bad,
I thought you might like to help me celebrate.
Celebrate what?
The return of Jamison and Edward.
Ah, that touches you deeply, doesn't it, Trask?
They have both recovered?
Completely.
Well, I'm glad to hear it.
Oh, yes, so glad you could cry, huh?
I prayed for their recovery every day.
You prayed for both of them to drop dead
and they disappointed you.
You're not going to be the master of Collinwood, Trask.
[ laughs ]
I think that calls for a second drink.
Where is Edward now?
He went out late this afternoon.
And Jamison?
You stay away from Jamison.
I merely want to talk to the boy.
But he doesn't want to talk to you.
[ door slams ]
[ sobbing ]
What's wrong, what happened to her?
Nothing but I got to talk to you right away.
Quentin, darling.
Charity, please.
Charity, you will control yourself.
Take your filthy hands off me.
Charity.
And stop calling me by that stupid name.
The next time you go to the sanitarium,
take her with you and leave her there.
Where did you find her?
She was wandering alone in the woods.
Quentin just told me that Edward and Jamison
have recovered completely.
Why hasn't she?
Why does her affliction go on?
I don't know, but maybe Quentin is right.
Yes, maybe you should send her back to the sanitarium.
My daughter is not mad.
She is possessed by an evil spirit.
Well, what are you going to do about it, eh?
I will be guided by what the almighty decides.
When it is time for her to recover,
the demon will leave her and she will be herself again.
And what if she kills somebody in the meantime, eh?
What are you talking about?
She tried it before, didn't she?
There is no proof that she poisoned Beth Chavez.
Charity is not capable of k*lling anyone.
No, no, Charity ain't,
[ sighs ] but this one, this one, she is.
She's crazy.
Do you know what she told me
while we were walking back to the house?
What?
She told me that Quentin is in love with her.
Now ain't that crazy?
No,
Quentin does love me
and nobody is gonna take him from me.
Not you or you
or that harpy that thinks she's gonna marry him.
I've lost one love in this house when poor Carl died.
I'm not gonna lose another one.
I'll k*ll the first person
that tries to come between me and Quentin.
You just think about that, governor!
You just think about it.
I don't know about you, Trask, but I believe her.
Yes, I believe her too.
What are you gonna do about it, eh?
I don't know.
Perhaps it would be best
if I did place her in the sanitarium temporarily.
CHARITY: Oh!
And who's gonna take me there?
You maybe?
Over my dead body, love, over my dead body.
[ romantic music ]
Do you like it?
MAGDA: I only like gypsy music.
You've got to listen to it whether you like it or not.
All right.
How much longer is he gonna have you keep watch over me?
I ain't keeping watch over you.
He wants to be sure you don't get excited.
I won't do that
as long as nobody interferes with me.
QUENTIN: Where's Magda?
TRASK: She's upstairs with Charity.
I asked her to stay with her.
You could have told me that before I left the house.
TRASK: Well, I didn't know you were looking for her.
I want to talk with you, Quentin.
I don't have time.
Well, you had better take time.
I want to settle this matter between you and my daughter.
What are you talking about?
This disgusting infatuation she has for you.
Well, it seems to me she's the one
you ought to talk to about that.
I want to know your intentions regarding my daughter.
[ chuckles ] My intentions?
I don't have any.
Well, you have led her to believe that you have.
That's a lie.
I'm not a fool, Quentin.
I saw the way she threw herself at you last night.
A young lady does not behave in that manner
unless she has been encouraged somewhat by the man.
Now, you listen to me, Trask.
Charity is not my problem, she's yours.
I'm not responsible for what's happened to Charity
and I don't want to be blamed for it.
Now, if you'll excuse me.
Mr. Trask,
she wants to see you in her room.
She's got to talk to you right away.
[ mysterious music ]
[ door opens ]
- What's wrong with you? - [ door shuts ]
Come into the drawing room.
Well?
Magda, we've got to think of something to do.
What do you mean?
There's going to be another full moon tonight.
Now I can't live through it again.
I just can't do it.
Quentin, Quentin, we tried everything.
Nothing worked.
You know, you know, there is only one person
who might be able, maybe, to help you.
Petofi?
Yes.
I hate talking to that man.
You ain't in no position to make choices, Quentin.
Magda, I had a dream last night.
I saw Tessie Kincaid.
I saw what she looked like after she'd been attacked.
Oh, Quentin, you've got to stop torturing yourself.
You've got to go to Petofi now.
It's no use.
I already know what his answer will be.
Quentin, you're the one person in the family
that he don't hate and you know why.
I know.
Because he's a victim of the curse himself.
So we have something in common. So what?
So he's got sympathy towards you.
He punished everybody in the family
but he didn't do nothing to you.
So he hasn't hurt me, but he hasn't helped me either,
and he has no intention of helping me.
[ grumbles ] How can you say that?
[ scoffs ] You don't do nothin'.
Magda,
there may be only one way
of preventing tonight from happening.
What do you mean?
You'll see, Magda.
Now how long have you been out here listening?
I wasn't listening.
I was about to enter the room.
[ Quentin chuckles ]
Quentin, Quentin, what are you gonna do?
What's wrong with him?
How should I know?
You usually make it your business
to know everyone's secrets.
I don't know nothing.
Very well.
I can't afford to concern myself with him right now anyway.
I want you to go upstairs and stay with Charity.
Oh, Mr. Trask, I got better things to do.
I will make it well worth your while
to stay with her.
Now, make sure she does not leave that room.
Use force if necessary, but keep her there.
I try but I promise you nothin'.
[ thunder rumbling ]
[ wind howling ]
[ door slams ]
FEMALE VOICE: I have come back to warn you.
Minerva,
leave me alone.
I beg you!
Leave me alone!
[ thunder rumbling ]
[ dramatic music ]
[ Window closes ]
Minerva, I will do anything you ask.
FEMALE VOICE:You must listen.
What? What is it?
He's in this house.
He will k*ll again.
I--I don't understand.
The beast walks like a man.
You're not-- You're not Minerva?
Beware of the full moon and the beast.
You must stop him.
Stop who? Tell me.
He is in this house now.
Who are you?
Show yourself to me.
[ thunder rumbles ]
Only he will see me, only he.
Who are you talking about?
Where is he in this house?
Answer me.
[ door opens ]
In this house,
the beast who walks like a man
somewhere in this house.
[ thunder rumbles ]
Who are you?
Speak to me.
FEMALE VOICE: I will be with you tonight.
Oh, please, have mercy on me, have mercy.
[ cries ]
I won't let that happen again, I won't.
[ door opens ]
Quentin, Quentin, I heard you yelling.
What's the matter?
It's all over, Magda.
What are you talking about?
The curse is about to end.
Quentin, w-what-- what are you doing?
It ain't possible.
I'm making it possible.
I'm writing a farewell note to Beth,
something I should have done a long time ago.
It's the only sure way to end this misery.
Quentin, what are you talking about?
There's not gonna be a change tonight, Magda,
because there's not gonna be a Quentin.
I won't let you do it.
You can't stop me.
Now give me that note!
No, Quentin, listen to me.
If we can get you through tonight,
then we got a whole month
to try to find a way to help you.
Magda, I can't get through this night
without committing another bloody m*rder.
[ Magda sighs ]
Now I won't let that happen again.
Quentin, I won't let you take your life.
Magda, don't you understand?
There's no other answer.
Look ,I'll be gone and no one will ever know.
Quentin, you don't want to die, do you?
No, I don't want to die.
Then we got to find a way to get you through tonight.
We got to try.
[ clinking ]
I will stay with you.
I will watch over you.
QUENTIN: Do you have your pentagram?
Yeah, I got it right here.
QUENTIN: All right, now I told you
I'd go through this on just one condition.
MAGDA: What is it?
Go to my desk, the top right-hand drawer.
Go on, Magda.
Well, don't just stare at it, pick it up.
What--What do you want to do with this?
It contains six silver b*ll*ts.
I can't escape from this room.
If I get away,
I want you to sh**t me through the heart.
[ Magda gasps ]
Now you promise me you'll do that.
Yes, yes, I will promise.
[ door opens ]
Quentin, I must speak to you.
QUENTIN: Get out of her, Trask!
Get out!
No, I believe I'll stay.
QUENTIN: Magda, get him out of here.
MAGDA: [ groaning in pain ] Oh, no! Don't--
I won't ask you why this g*n is filled with silver b*ll*ts
or why you've manacled yourself.
I think I'll just stay...
[ gasps ]
...and see the answers for myself...
when the moon rises.
