Our parents work in a circus

Leo: Well, it's not every day you get to see your papa

cook a Polynesian feast!

Andy: A Polynesian feast, my favorite!

Wolfgang: Thanks, kids, just leave the food on the table.

Carmen: Leo, how does your dad know

how to make this kind of food anyway?

Leo: He said something about getting lessons

from a local chef. Fetu: Hi there!

Leo: Whoa, I didn't know there was gonna be another kid here!

This is Carmen and Andy, and I'm Leo!

Fetu: Leo? Mr.Chockers' son! Nice to meet you.

I hear you're a great chef!

Leo: Oh, uh, thank you!

Your papa must be the one helping my papa

with the feast today!

Fetu: Well actually... Wolfgang: There you are, Fetu!

I'm glad you're...whoa I uh...forgot your eyes...do that.

Fetu: Do what?

Wolfgang: Oh, uh, ugh...nothing.

I could really use your help!

Leo: What?! You're the expert my papa was talking about?

Fetu: Oh [nervous laughter]

cook like an islander.

Wolfgang: Oh, he's just bein' modest!

Come on Fetu, let's get started!

Fetu: So, first you're gonna need

coconut cream and taro leaves.

But not just any taro leaves, only the tender ones.

Andy: Wow, Fetu really knows his food.

Leo: He sure does.

Andy: He's like... really good!

Leo: Uh-huh...

Andy: I mean you're usually the food guy, Leo,

but this kid's so good he's teaching your dad!

Leo: I get it, I get it...he's good!

Fetu: Every dish in the feast will include coconuts!

Andy: Really?

Leo: Coconuts...why coconuts?

Fetu: The coconut is one of our favourite foods

here in the islands!

Leo: Oh. Yeah, yeah...of course.

Hey, what island are we on?

Carmen: Let's ask the Magic Globe!

Magic Globe: Hi, friends!

Today we're on one of the

beautiful islands of Samoa,

located in the Pacific Ocean.

Samoa is part of a larger

region of islands known as Polynesia.

Feasts are very important in Samoa

and coconuts are one of their most beloved foods!

Samoans use coconuts in all sorts of dishes,

from main courses to desserts.

And that's not all!

The dry, stringy fiber on the outside of the coconut,

called the husk, can be twisted into rope

or used to burn as fuel!

And coconut oil is often used

for skin or hair treatment,

and many, many more things!

Andy: Wow! Did you know coconuts were so cool, Leo?

Leo: Yeah! I know lots of stuff about food!

I've got a trick for opening stuff.

Fetu: Oh cool! A trick?

Andy: Leo has a trick? Carmen: I'd like to see!

Fetu: Me too! Leo: Ehhh.....

Wolfgang: Hey, Fetu!

Why don't you come teach this old man

how to peel a papaya properly?

Fetu: I've got to go help your papa.

Just bring back the coconut when you've got it open!

how to open this thing.

Guys, I don't have a special trick for opening coconuts.

Luna: It's okay Leo. I'll show you.

Luna: I'm sure I have... I mean, I'm pretty sure.

Leo: Well, because...umm... I have one more idea!

Now, Andy, make sure the coconut is right below

the pointy end of the canoe.

Luna: Hey, Leo remind me how this works again?

Leo: Well...you jump out of that net...

and the canoe falls right on the coconut.

Luna: Sounds simple enough...

Leo: A-a-alright Luna...g-go for it!

Luna: Okay!

Oh no, I blew it!

Not only couldn't I open

my first coconut, I lost it!

And now I've got nothing to bring to the feast!

Andy: Oh yeah, the feast!

I almost forgot!

Leo: And I bet my dad is having

a great time cooking with Fetu,

the "Great Polynesian Chef!"

Plus, he's a really nice guy.

It's not fair!

Luna: It's okay, Leo.

You tried your best.

C'mon let's head back.

Fetu: And that's how you make the dough for Fa'apapa bread.

Wolfgang: Once I get good at this,

Leo will be calling me Papa Fa'apapa!

[hearty laughter]

[sighs] I'll go get more flour.

Papa Fa'apapa! Hahahaha! Fetu: Heh-heh...

Luna: Hi, Fetu!

Fetu: Oh hi, Luna! Nice to see you here in Samoa!

Leo: Hi, Fetu.

Fetu: Leo! Did you cr*ck open your...

wait, where's your coconut?

Leo: It's in the middle of the ocean, Fetu.

I was only pretending to know how to cr*ck that coconut.

Fetu: That's okay because there are

plenty more coconuts here to cr*ck!

And I can give you some help if you want.

Leo: Okaay.

Fetu: You know, having a hard time opening a coconut

is pretty common if you don't know the little trick

we use here in the islands.

Leo: Really?

Fetu: Sure. Check this out.

Every coconut has a face...see?

Two eyes...a little nose...and a mouth!

First, you look at the coconut face to face, like this.

Then you find the line between the eyes,

and bop it right on the top!

And it should cr*ck right open!

Leo: But what do I bop it with?

Fetu: You just find a nice solid rock.

I see some right over there.

Leo: Okay...

Wolfgang: Did I hear Leo is about to

cr*ck open his first coconut?

Leo: Find a solid rock.

Okay!

Face to face...

Leo: Hmm. Huh??

Coconut: You think you got what it takes?

You think you're ready to cr*ck open a coconut?

Hmm?

Leo: Eh...yeah, I'm ready.

Andy: Tell me Leo's not talking to that coconut.

Carmen: Shhhh!

Leo: Find the line between the eyes...and...

Gugh! [cr*ck!] All: [gasp]

Leo: Hey I did it!

I did it, Papa!

I cracked open my first coconut!

Wolfgang: That's amazing son!

Leo: [sips] Wolfgang: [gulps] Ahhh!

Leo: Papa, the truth is,

I had no clue how to open a coconut.

I had to ask Fetu for help.

Wolfgang: Ah don't worry, son!

I've been asking Fetu for help all day!

I didn't know how to cook a Polynesian feast

when we started.

Leo: That's true!

Fetu: Check this out! Wolfgang: I'm proud of you, son.

Asking for help is how we learn!

Andy: Hey! Isn't that your coconut from earlier?

Leo: Oh yeah! Here it is!

Fetu: Wanna open it now that you know how?

Leo: I think I'll keep this one unopened.

It'll remind me that it's okay to ask for help.

Luna: That is a great idea, Leo!

Leo: Luna!

Thanks for trying to help me

open the coconut today.

Luna: I'm happy to help anytime, Leo.

But it was smart to also ask someone

who really knew what they were doing. [chuckles]

Leo: Yeah, next time I won't be so

Honey: The meow-loo-loo-WHO?

Natia: [laughter] Mah-oo-loo-OO-loo.

It means "light rain".

Carmen/Honey: Aaah...

Natia: Our island culture has many dances that tell stories.

These Maah-oo loo-oo-loo moves

describe how beautiful and wonderful my life is.

Honey: What?! A life that's beautiful and wonderful?

I want that!

Carmen: Me too, and if I lived

in a beautiful place like this,

I bet my life would be the most

unboring, choreless life ever!

Honey: But where are we?

Carmen: Well, we're on an island,

but what island?

Andy: Waaaaaait!

Andy/Leo: [panting]

Leo: It's my favorite part of the day.

Carmen: Oh, you know, just all the things

that must make up your beautiful island life!

Natia: Oh, [chuckles] I see.

That's what you think my dance is about?

But none of that is true, Carmen.

In fact, I bet our lives aren't so different from yours.

Carmen: I doubt it.

Our lives are full of chores and stuff like that.

Honey: Yeah, we want lives like yours!

Natia: Well, I guess it's just how you look at it.

When we dance the Maah oo-loo-oo-loo,

it's to celebrate the little things we do every day.

Honey: What do you mean little things?

Natia: Well, for us,

it's daily activities,

like helping to catch fish for family meals--

Or planting and harvesting crops--

Or pitching in doing work around the house.

Natia: You know, real-life stuff isn't boring,

it's just part of life.

I'm glad we got to do it together.

You know what I just realized?

We wanted to hang out all day and thought cleaning our room

and doing things around the house would get in the way.

But it was the ordinary things that brought us together today!

Carmen: Maybe they weren't chores after all, Honey.

in all areas of life.
