NARRATOR: Our heroes' arduous trek over an imposingly

IAN: I'll bet you're here for a battle too!

ASH: Yeah My name's Ash, and I'm from Pallet Town.

ASH: This will be my first battle in Sinnoh.

IAN: Say, that's quite a long trip all the way from Kanto!

Welcome to the temple for Rock Pokémon the Oreburgh Gym!

ASH: You mean this Gym's for Rock Pokémon?

- PAUL: Duh - IAN: You've got it.

And our Gym Leader's name is Roark!

ASH: Wait! Then that means you must not be the Gym Leader!

IAN: I take care of the Pokémon here.

The name is Ian, and Roark's not here right at the moment.

I'm sure you'll be able to have a battle with Roark

as soon as Paul is finished with his!

ASH: Sounds great, thanks!

PAUL: So until Roark gets back, I'll be at the Pokémon Center.

ASH: Hey Paul, let's both give it all we've got!

ASH: What is with that guy...?

PIKACHU: [UNSURE]

IAN: Here's your Sinnoh region Badge Case.

ASH: Wow, thank you Ian!

IAN: Now, if you win eight badges,

you can compete in the Sinnoh League.

That's gotta be where Oreburgh City gets its name.

I've heard Oreburgh City has some

of the richest coal ore anywhere!

IAN: And while Roark digs for coal,

he's exploring forhidden treasure!

ASH: Did he say Roark? Then, that's him!

a talk with this Fossil right now.

And right now, it's telling me all about the good old days.

- ASH: That Fossil! - BROCK: Really?

ROARK: The truth!

A lot of Pokémon Fossils turn up while coal mining!

ROARK: I really enjoy my work as foreman for the miners.

ASH: You're the foreman?

JESSIE: Hello! Sorry for butting in like this.

JAMES: But did he refer to Fossils coming back to life?

WORKER B: Oh yes,

Ian was speaking of an incredible machine!

It resurrects ancient Pokémon Fossils,

and it's just great!

JESSIE: Great!

JESSIE: Stealing that machine's what I'm talking about!

JAMES: It is right up our evil alley!

MEOWTH: And no more dough digging!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

IAN: Welcome back, Roark! How was the treasure hunt?

ROARK: We've really discovered something this time!

This may just be the best fossil yet!

IAN: Oh, there's Paul. He's your first challenger!

ROARK: [NOTICE]

ROARK: I'm sorry to keep you waiting!

'm Roark the Gym leader. Nice to meet you!

PAUL: The same here.

ROARK: So, why don't we get started then?

DAWN: Can't wait to see a Gym battle!

ASH: [SURPRISE]

ROARK: You've never seen one?

DAWN: No, and I want to learn everything about them I can!

ROARK: Well then, it's fine with me.

Hey, Paul, how about you?

PAUL: No prob. I really couldn't care less.

ASH: You can be sure I'll be watching you guys battle!

DAWN: Awesome! So, this is what it's like in a Gym!

BROCK: When it comes to battlefields there are all sorts

of different types! Now of course, this Gym is a Rock-type

Gym so it's set up to battle with Rock-type Pokémon in mind.

IAN: The Oreburgh City Gym battle between Paul,

the challenger, and Roark, the Gym leader,

is about to get underway!

IAN: The battle will be three-on-three, and as soon as

all three Pokémon on either side are unable to continue,

the challenge is over!

In addition, only the challenger may substitute Pokémon!

IAN: Now, let the battle begin!

ROARK: Geodude, let's go!

GEODUDE: [APPEARING]

DAWN: Oh, wow, it's a Geodude!

POKEDEX: Geodude. The Rock Pokémon.

Geodude is often found on mountain roads

with half of its body buried in the ground,

so it can observe mountain travelers.

PAUL: Azumarill, stand by!

AZUMARILL: [APPEARING]

ASH: Wow, so Paul's using a Water-type Pokémon!

POKEDEX: Azumarill, the Aqua Rabbit Pokémon.

Azumarill lives in rivers and lakes,

and while in water its body's color

and pattern confuses its enemies.

BROCK: Since Water-type moves are really powerful against

Rock-type Pokémon, Azumarill's a smart choice.

DAWN: Then Paul's got the upper hand, right?

BROCK: I guess. In theory anyway.

DAWN: Theory?

ROARK: Paul! You have the honor!

PAUL: Azumarill! Hydro Pump, go!

AZUMARILL: [HYDRO PUMP MOVE]

ROARK: Geodude! Hidden Power!

GEODUDE: [GRUNT] / [EXERTION]

AZUMARILL: [GRUNT]

ASH: It b*at back that Hydro Pump!

BROCK: And that was a Water-type move, too!

ROARK: All right, Geodude, Rollout!

GEODUDE: [ROLLOUT MOVE]

PAUL: Water g*n, Azumarill!

AZUMARILL: [WATER g*n MOVE] AZUMARILL: [GRUNT]

BROCK: Not giving his challengers any time

for counter att*cks is how Roark keeps up the pressure!

GEODUDE: [ROLLOUT MOVE]

AZUMARILL: [GRUNT]

PAUL: What?

AZUMARILL: [STUNNED]

IAN: Azumarill is unable to battle! Geodude wins!

DAWN: A Water-type Pokémon just lost to a Rock type!

BROCK: Every time Geodude's Rollout hits it just keeps

getting stronger But even so, getting a knockout

on just the second att*ck?

DAWN: Now I understand what you meant before when you said

Paul's upper hand was in theory.

- PAUL: Good-for-nothing! - ASH: The creep!

PIKACHU: [ANGRY] PAUL: Now, Elekid, stand by!

ELEKID: [APPEARING]

ROARK: I'm sure Paul knows full well that Geodude

is a Ground type,

and also that Elekid's Electric-type moves won't work

very well at all. So I wonder what he's got up his sleeve...

PAUL: Now, Elekid, Brick Break!

ELEKID: [BRICK BREAK MOVE]

ROARK: Clever. They're using a Fighting-type move!

But we're still going to stick with using Rollout!

GEODUDE: [AFFIRMATIVE]

ELEKID: [BRICK BREAK MOVE]

GEODUDE: [GROAN]

IAN: Geodude is unable to battle! Elekid wins!

ROARK: And they did it with just one hit?

DAWN: But how? I thought Elekid was at a huge disadvantage.

BROCK: See? That goes to show that you can overcome just about

any disadvantage by using the right moves.

ROARK: Geodude, return! Thanks a lot, good friend.

ELEKID: [PUMPED]

ROARK: Onix, you're up next!

ONIX: [ROAR]

ASH: He's going to use Onix!

DAWN: It's huge!

POKEDEX: Onix. The Rock Snake Pokémon.

It tunnels through the ground,

which shakes when it raises its thunderous roar.

POKEDEX: It can move through the ground at miles per hour.

- BROCK: This Onix can do it! - DAWN: How do you know?

BROCK: Because I raised one myself,

and I can tell just by looking at it

that this Onix has already been through

some very tough battles!

PAUL: I'll be staying with my Elekid.

ROARK: Fine! Since I've already seen your Brick Break,

I wonder how well you'll do now!

PAUL: Quick, Elekid, use Brick Break!

ELEKID: [CHARGE] ROARK: Dodge Onix!

ONIX: [EXERTION] ELEKID: [MISS]

PIKACHU: [GASP] ASH: That's fast!

DAWN: How can something so big move so quickly?

ROARK: Now use Slam, Onix!

ONIX: [ROAR]

ELEKID: [GASP]

ONIX: [CHARGE]

PAUL: Protect!

ELEKID: [PROTECT MOVE]

ELEKID: [BRACE]

ONIX: [ROAR]

ROARK: Double-Edge, let's go!

ONIX: [DOUBLE-EDGE MOVE]

ELEKID: [FALL]

DAWN: Wow, Onix caught Elekid right when its protective

barrier went down!

ASH: Yeah, Dawn, you're right, but Onix got hurt

when itcounterattacked with that Double-Edge!

ONIX: [GROWL]

DAWN: But Onix looks just fine to me!

BROCK: That's cause Onix can use Rock Head. Rock Head's a special

Ability: It takes moves that would normally cause recoil

damage, and completely prevents it from ever taking place!

- DAWN: Wow - PAUL: Stay strong, or else!

ELEKID: [WINCING]

ROARK: Stealth Rock, go!

ONIX: [STEALTH ROCK MOVE]

ELEKID: [GASP]

- ASH: Elekid, look out! - ROARK: Stealth Rock, go!

ONIX: [STEALTH ROCK MOVE] ELEKID: [GASP]

ASH: Elekid, look out!

ELEKID: [BRACING]

PAUL: Did he say Stealth Rock?

ASH: What kind of move is that? PIKACHU: [AWE]

BROCK: Stealth Rock causes damage to Pokémon that appear

later in the battle. It has no affect at all on the Pokémon

currently out there!

DAWN: You mean if Paul decides to call Elekid back and

chooseanother Pokémon, then that Pokémon will take

all the damage?

BROCK: Right! It looks like Roark is taking care of Paul's

substitutions before they happen, making things that

much trickier for Paul!

ELEKID: [GROWL]

ROARK: If you were going to exchange Pokémon,

you should have done it earlier!

ROARK: Slam, Onix, let's go!

ONIX: [ROAR]

ONIX: [SLAM MOVE][GRUNT]

ONIX: [PARALYZED] ROARK: Uh oh

DAWN: Hey what's wrong with Onix?

BROCK: It's called Static a special Ability of Elekid's!

DAWN: How does it work?

BROCK: When Elekid made physical contact, Onix became paralyzed!

PAUL: Brick Break, Elekid, now! ELEKID: [SPRING INTO ACTION]

ROARK: Double-Edge, Onix!

ONIX: [ROAR] ONIX: [CONNECT]

PIKACHU: [SHOCK]

ELEKID: [WINCING]

ONIX: [GRUNT]

ROARK: Don't get too comfortable with Static! Sometimes moves can

be used even when paralyzed!

ELEKID: [STRUGGLING]

ROARK: I'm impressed! Elekid's a resilient Pokémon!

PAUL: Now, Elekid, return!

DAWN: Wow, what's Paul doing?

BROCK: I guess he doesn't really care about the Stealth Rock!

ASH: Yeah he doesn't care if his next Pokémon get hurt or not!

PAUL: Now, Chimchar stand by!

CHIMCHAR: [CHEERFUL]

CHIMCHAR: [NOTICE]

CHIMCHAR: [BREAK FREE] [HEAVY BREATHING]

ROARK: A Fire type next eh? Impressive the way you come at

me with Pokémon that aren't considered very good matchups!

PAUL: Chimchar use Dig!

CHIMCHAR: [AFFIRMATIVE]

ONIX: [NOTICING]

ROARK: Try to sense where Chimchar's moving Onix!

ONIX: [GRUNT]

CHIMCHAR: [DIG MOVE] ONIX: [SHOCKED]

DAWN: Making a huge Onix jump like that is no small feat!

BROCK: Using Dig should have a powerful effect on Onix as well!

ASH: So that's why Paul had Chimchar learn Dig!

Awesome strategy!

ROARK: Now, use Double-Edge!

ONIX: [DOUBLE-EDGE MOVE]

PAUL: Chimchar use Dig one more time!

CHIMCHAR: [DIG MOVE]

ROARK: Onix, stand still! Just feel Chimchar's movements!

ONIX: [WINCE]

ROARK: When will that Static wear off?

PAUL: Chimchar! Do it!

CHIMCHAR: [APPEARING]

ONIX: [SHOCK]

ONIX: [FAINTING]

IAN: Onix is unable to battle! Chimchar wins!

CHIMCHAR: [PANTING]

- PAUL: Not bad, Chimchar - ROARK: Onix, return!

ROARK: You were great. Take a nice long rest!

ROARK: Well, Paul, you're giving me quite a run for my money!

It's time to bring out my final Pokémon!

I suggest you get ready.

ROARK: Cranidos, let's go!

CRANIDOS: [APPEARING]

ASH: Cranidos looks just like that Fossil!

PIKACHU: [AWE]

POKEDEX: Cranidos. The Headbutt Pokémon.

Cranidos lived in the deep woods about

one hundred million years ago,

and its cranium is as hard as steel!

PAUL: Roark, I can read you like a book! Chimchar, use Dig!

CHIMCHAR: [DIG MOVE]

ROARK: Cranidos! Headbutt now!

CRANIDOS: [FOCUS] CHIMCHAR : [DIGGING]

CHIMCHAR: [DIG MOVE] CRANIDOS: [HEADBUTT MOVE]

CHIMCHAR: [SCREAM]

ASH: What a hit!

BROCK: Cranidos's anticipating Chimchar's movements!

PAUL: Chimchar, use Dig one more time!

CHIMCHAR: [DIG MOVE]

ROARK: Cranidos, Zen Headbutt!

CRANIDOS: [ZEN HEADBUTT]

CHIMCHAR: [GROAN]

ASH: Hey, that's a much stronger move than Headbutt!

BROCK: There's no doubt that Zen Headbutt's got a lot more power

than a normal Headbutt. I've heard it can scare an opponent

into flinching!

ROARK: Zen Headbutt, again!

CRANIDOS: [ZEN HEADBUTT MOVE]

PAUL: Quick, Chimchar, use Dig!

CHIMCHAR: [NERVOUS]

BROCK: Amazing! Chimchar's so scared, it doesn't hear

anything that Paul says!

CHIMCHAR: [YELL]

CRANIDOS: [HIT]

CHIMCHAR: [YELL] CRANIDOS: [att*ck]

- PAUL: Come on! - ROARK: Focus Energy!

CRANIDOS: [FOCUS ENERGY MOVE]

DAWN: What's going on now Brock?

BROCK: Focus Energy focuses your att*ck strength and makes it

easier to hit a weak spot. I think Roark's planning to use

one sh*t to knock out Chimchar!

ASH: You got to get Chimchar out of there!

CHIMCHAR: [EXCITED]

PAUL: I was waiting for this!

ASH: For what? PIKACHU: [WONDERING]

BROCK: Chimchar's using Blaze. Watch out!

BROCK: Blaze's a special Ability that makes Chimchar's Fire-type

moves much stronger when its endurance is low! But I'm not

sure how much of an effect it'll have on a

Rock type like Cranidos...

CHIMCHAR: [CHEER]

ROARK: Zen Headbutt, again!

CRANIDOS: [CHARGING]

PAUL: Now, Flame Wheel!

CHIMCHAR: [FLAME WHEEL MOVE]

- ASH: That's fast! - PAUL: Aim for the legs!

CRANIDOS: [YELLING]

CRANIDOS: [GROAN]

ASH: That Flame Wheel's strong!

BROCK: Chimchar's Flame Wheel was so juiced up with Blaze,

it was faster than Cranidos was!

CRANIDOS: [STRUGGLING] CHIMCHAR: [LANDING]

PAUL: Flame Wheel, Chimchar, once more!

CHIMCHAR: [FLAME WHEEL MOVE] CRANIDOS: [YELL]

ASH: [SHOCK]

PAUL: Chimchar, use Dig! Let's go!

CHIMCHAR: [DIG MOVE]

ROARK: Cranidos, Focus Energy, now!

CRANIDOS: [FOCUS ENERGY MOVE] CHIMCHAR: [att*ck]

CRANIDOS: [GROAN] ROARK: Use Headbutt!

CRANIDOS: [HEADBUTT MOVE]

PAUL: Dodge it quick!

CHIMCHAR: [GASP]

CHIMCHAR: [FAINT]

IAN: Chimchar is unable to battle! Cranidos wins!

ROARK: Cranidos! How do you feel?

CRANIDOS: [REASSURING]

PAUL: Chimchar, I'll deal with you later!

PAUL: Elekid, stand by!

ELEKID: [APPEARING]

DAWN: That was Stealth Rock again?

BROCK: Yup! Once you use it, the effects just keep going.

ELEKID: [OUT OF BREATH] PAUL: Now, use Brick Break!

ELEKID: [RUN] ROARK: Flame thrower!

CRANIDOS: [FLAMETHROWER MOVE]

ELEKID: [BRICK BREAK MOVE]

CRANIDOS: [YELL]

- DAWN: What's that? - ASH: Maybe it was Static.

CRANIDOS: [SHAKING OFF]

ASH: What a hit! PIKACHU: [SHOCK]

ROARK: You've just witnessed Cranidos' special Ability,

Mold Breaker, ruining your special Ability!

CRANIDOS: [WINCE] ASH: [SHOCK]

ROARK: Use Zen Headbutt now!

CRANIDOS: [ZEN HEADBUTT NOW]

CRANIDOS: [PUSH THROUGH]

ASH: Cranidos is just moving too slow right now!

BROCK: Guess that leg injury was worse than I thought!

PAUL: Brick Break, one more time!

ELEKID: [BRICK BREAK MOVE] CRANIDOS: [WINCE]

PAUL: No more Headbutt, huh?

ROARK: I see, you don't rely on moves or types for your

strategy, you just use what att*ck style is

best for the moment!

DAWN: Cranidos' att*ck power seems to be totally

dependent on the strength of its legs...

BROCK: Paul sure looked to me like he was waiting for

Chimchar's Blaze to take effect, which could explain the way he

uses Pokémon.

ASH: Of course! That's why he taught

Chimchar to battle like that!

PAUL: Brick Break let's go! ELEKID: [YELLING]

ROARK: Cranidos, Flamethrower!

CRANIDOS: [FLAMETHROWER MOVE]

ELEKID: [YELLING]

ELEKID: [GRUNT]
