NARRATOR: Because our Heroes had arrived at the Oreburgh Gym just

after Paul did, Ash waited his turn to challenge Roark the

Oreburgh Gym Leader by watching Paul's challenge first! What our

Hero witnessed was Paul using his Pokémon in an unusually

creative way, without concern for their types, and managing to

win the coveted Coal Badge as a result. But now, the curtain is

about to come up on Ash's first Sinnoh Gym Battle challenge!

ASH: Aren't you going to stay to watch my battle?

DAWN: You've already battled Ash once - why not stay and watch?

DAWN: What - what's wrong?

PAUL: What's wrong? Who're you?

DAWN: Excuse me, your rudeness, but we met once before.

The name's Dawn!

PAUL: Don't remember.

DAWN: You think you're funny, don't you?

DAWN: Listen, mister!

You nasty, insulting, spoiled brat apologize!

ROARK: You're welcome to stay.

PAUL: With that enthusiasm how can I refuse?

ASH: Good! And I'm going to show

you a whole new style of battling!

ASH: Whenever you're ready, Roark, I am!

ROARK: Ash would you mind terribly if

we had our battle tomorrow?

ROARK: You know my Pokémon and I just went through some serious

battling and to tell you the truth we're exhausted!

ASH: I hear you. Hey tomorrow'll be just fine!

ROARK: Great! Thank you, Ash!

JESSIE: Look. Is that a fossil I see?

JAMES: Who wants to restore it? Me!

- JESSIE: Science! - JAMES: Our quest!

MEOWTH: Ain't these glasses the best?

JESSIE: Bringing chaos at a break - neck pace!

JAMES: Dashing hope, putting fear in its place!

JESSIE: A rose by any other name is just as sweet!

JAMES: When everything is worse, our work is complete!

- JESSIE: Jessie! - JAMES: And James!

MEOWTH: Professor Meowth is the name!

JESSIE: Putting the do - gooders in their place!

JAMES: Because we're Team Rocket!

MEOWTH: In your face!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

JAMES: Science lovers! We are now in the Oreburgh Mining

Museum where folks divide their time between the history of coal

mining and the mystery of Ancient Pokémon!

JESSIE: And lots of cool stuff to steal!

MEOWTH: I suggest we stretch our brains by doing some

Pokey - research first!

WOBBUFFET: [AGREEING]

JESSIE: If that's what I think.

JAMES: It's enough coal to light the Boss's house for a week!

KENZO: It was mined with cooperation between

humans and Pokémon.

JAMES: Uh, have we met?

KENZO: My name is Kenzo and I'm one of the researchers here at

the museum! And I'll bet I know who you are.

KENZO: You're Dr. Jessa, Dr. Jamus and Dr. Meows

the Ancient Pokémon experts!

JESSIE: True! WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

KENZO: It's an honor to finally meet. So now, why don't you tell

me what part of our museum you'd like to look at first.

JESSIE: The best part of course!!

JAMES: The Fossil Restorer!!

MEOWTH: Word up! WOBBUFFET: [AGREEING]

KENZO: Well, of course!

Follow me. It's in the research tower right next door!

KENZO: Our museum is comprised of two parts - the main building

which houses all of our exhibits and the research tower.

KENZO: Our activities in the research tower are

just what the name implies - we research

Ancient Pokémon and their abilities.

KENZO: .in order to gain a deeper understanding

of Pokémon development.

KENZO: And over our many long years of painstaking work,

we have developed a technology that actually restores

fossilized Pokémon - bringing them completely back to life,

and in full health!

JESSIE: Wow! You have been busy!

JAMES: A bit bigger than Pikachu.

MEOWTH: We'll steal it anyway!!

WOBBUFFET: [AGREEING]

KENZO: The restored Pokémon are then placed in a time -

appropriate environment.

KENZO: All located within this dome!

JESSIE: Gorgeous!

ARMALDO: [EXCITED]

CHANSEY: [HAPPY]

PIKACHU, AIPOM, STARAVIA, TURTWIG: [COMPLAINING]

ASH: Okay I know you all want to get out of this place as soon as

you can but I can only use three of you right now!

BROCK: Try and understand that out of all of you the only

Pokémon good for battling a Rock type

is Turtwig who's a Grass type!

TURTWIG : [EXCITED]

ASH: And I'm counting on you and your Razor Leaf, Turtwig!

TURTWIG: [PLEASED]

ASH: Of course it is true that Aipom's Focus Punch

is really powerful too. AIPOM: [HAPPY]

ASH: Not to mention your Iron Tail,

Pikachu which is totally awesome!

ASH: So! I guess that means I choose all three of you!

TURTWIG: [EXCITED]

STARAVIA: [DISAPPOINTED]

DAWN: Ohhh! Poor Staravia!

BROCK: Staravia really loves to battle all right.

STARAVIA: [UPSET]

ASH: Man, I'm sorry Staravia

but I promise you'll go the next time!

STARAVIA: [UPSET]

DAWN: A promise is a promise! Don't worry!

ASH: And that's when Dawn's mom says she worries the most.

DAWN: What did you say?

BROCK: Calm down! One thing I learned from watching Paul's

battle with Roark was Paul's speed making up a huge part of

the secret to his victory!

BROCK: Of course his choice of moves was important too,

but I think that amazing speed put him over the top!

ASH: So do I. The thing is, what do we do?

PAUL: Now that should be a no-brainer just imitate me!

DAWN: [SURPRISED]

ASH: I'd never do what you do! I wouldn't force Chimchar to

battle the way you did for a million BUCKS!

BOY A: Hey.wow! Thanks a lot for the Azumarill, mister!

We'll train real hard! So see you!

ASH: You gave him Azumarill?!

- PAUL: Yeah, so? - ASH: Because it lost?

PAUL: That's as good as that Azumarill's going to get.

ASH: I thought it was your friend!

You could have kept training, you know.

PAUL: No, that one was a lost cause.

ASH: I don't get you.!

PAUL: And I thought you wanted to win!

ASH: I do, but not the way you go about doing it!

ASH: He'll never b*at me again!

ASH: All right, let's show that Paul there are other ways to win

a battle than the way he does it!

PIKACHU: [INSPIRED]

BROCK: What's wrong?

DAWN: I guess they're just different kinds of trainers.

I just wonder what Chimchar and Elekid think of Paul...

JESSIE: Well we can't just hide it under our coats.

JAMES: They might've been nice and helped us by making the

Fossil Restoration Machine the size of a deck of cards.

JAMES: Oh but no they couldn't do that!

MEOWTH: We're stealing that monstrosity

if I have to carry it out on my back!

MEOWTH: There's way too much dough in bringing

Ancient Pokeymon onto the modern market.

WOBBUFFET: [AGREEING]

KENZO: Let me show you the restoration process.

KENZO: The fossil is placed here.

KENZO: ...and over a period of the next hours

the restoration will take place!

KENZO: We currently have machines at our disposal.

KENZO: Aah! Good timing! It seems Omanyte is complete!

OMANYTE: [GREETING]

AMES: hours between famine and feast!

JESSIE: Riches for us to say the least!

MEOWTH: While they get fleeced!

MEOWTH: No more making our own machines that all just end up

going blooey anyway!

JAMES: Dig a few fossils and suddenly it's pay day!

WOBBUFFET: [EXCITED]

JESSIE: Hold on! We won't even have to lift up a single shovel!

They have fossils.

JAMES: You're right! There're enough fossils here to keep us

restoring right through the next year!

MEOWTH: Like baking cookies! Except, when you sell those

cookies all you get is a few bucks but not with

fossils right?

JESSIE: Out of sight!

MEOWTH: We're conquering Sinnoh with all of our might!

JESSIE: Sweet delight!

MEOWTH: And once the Team Rocket flag's flapping from sea

to shining Sinnoh sea I just know the Boss'll be happily

bawling like a Boss baby!

- JESSIE: This is our quest. - JAMES: To be the best!

MEOWTH: And b*at the rest!

WOBBUFFET: [EXCITED]

JESSIE: Now, time's a wasting so hurry up What's your plan?!

JAMES: Micro-managing again are you?

WOBBUFFET: [ANNOYED]

ROARK: I trust you had a good night's sleep

and are ready to go?

ASH: Yeah! PIKACHU: [AFFIRMATIVE]

ROARK: Good! My Pokémon did too and are in

tip-top shape so feel free to give it all you've got!

ASH: Great! Get a load of this, Paul!

ASH: Some real battling!

IAN: The Gym Battle between Ash the challenger and

Roark the Gym Leader is about to begin!

IAN: Each side will have the use of Pokémon and the battle

is over when all of either side's Pokémon are defeated!

IAN: In addition, only the challenger

is allowed to make any substitutions!

BROCK: Ash's first Sinnoh battle is here.

- DAWN: Ooh I can't wait! - IAN: Let the battle begin!

ROARK: Cranidos, let's go!

CRANIDOS: [APPEARING]

ASH: Why's he doing that? PIKACHU: [CONFUSED]

DAWN: I was so sure Roark was going to save Cranidos for last

but instead he's starting with it!

BROCK: By switching up the order of his Pokémon Roark's testing

Ash's reaction to surprise situations. It's a common

technique in these kinds of matches.

DAWN: Wow, hope Ash's okay.

ASH: I don't care anyway! Roark's got Rock type Pokémon.

I'll just take them down one at a time!

ASH: But I still have to deal with Cranidos' speed

and that Head Butt.

ROARK: And which Pokémon have you chosen?

ASH: Okay Aipom. I choose you!

AIPOM: [APPEARING]

ASH: Here we go, Aipom!

I'm counting on you to confuse Cranidos with your quick moves!

ASH: Aipom, use Focus Punch now!

AIPOM: [FOCUS PUNCH MOVE]

ROARK: Head Butt! CRANIDOS: [HEAD BUTT MOVE]

BROCK: A good move by Ash!

He got Aipom up in the air right off the bat!

BROCK: That gives them the advantage over

Cranidos stuck on the ground.

AIPOM: [FOCUS PUNCH MOVE] ASH: Do it!

AIPOM: [FOCUS PUNCH MOVE]

CRANIDOS: [HEAD BUTT MOVE]

ASH: Oh no! AIPOM: [STARTLED]

CRANIDOS: [HEAD BUTT MOVE] AIPOM: [PAINED]

CRANIDOS: [DETERMINED]

DAWN: I knew Cranidos had great speed but

I had no idea it could jump like that too!

BROCK: And that means it's going to be a tough battle whether

they're both on the ground or in the air!

ASH: Aipom, get up! PIKACHU: [ENCOURAGING]

AIPOM: [DETERMINED]

ROARK: Cranidos use Flamethrower now!

CRANIDOS: [FLAMETHROWER MOVE]

ASH: Double Team!

AIPOM []: [DOUBLE TEAM MOVE]

ASH: Aipom use Swift!

AIPOM: [SWIFT MOVE]

ROARK: Dodge it!

CRANIDOS: [EXERTION]

ASH: Focus Punch! AIPOM: [FOCUS PUNCH MOVE]

ROARK: Zen Headbutt go!

CRANIDOS: [ZEN HEADBUTT MOVE]

IAN: Aipom's unable to battle! Cranidos wins it!

ASH: You were awesome, Aipom,

now go and take a good long rest!

DAWN: Aipom tried hard.

BROCK: At least it gave Ash the opportunity to check out the way

Cranidos moves which you can be sure he'll be

remembering from here on out!

ROARK: Okay, Ash have you decided on your next Pokémon?

ASH: Okay, Pikachu you're up!

PIKACHU: [AFFIRMATIVE]

PIKACHU: [DETERMINED]

ASH: Let's show 'em Pikachu, Thunderbolt now!

PIKACHU: [THUNDERBOLT MOVE]

ROARK: Dodge then Zen Headbutt!

CRANIDOS: [DODGING][ZEN HEADBUTT MOVE]

BROCK: Oh no! Aipom's Focus Punch

should've worn Cranidos down! PIKACHU: [SCARED]

ASH: Here it comes! Iron Tail, let's go!

PIKACHU: [IRON TAIL MOVE]

CRANIDOS: [PAINED]

ASH: All right!

- DAWN: Bullseye! - BROCK: That did the trick!

ROARK: Excellent! A well placed hit! Cranidos, Head Butt!

CRANIDOS: [HEAD BUTT MOVE] ASH: Dodge and use Thunderbolt!

PIKACHU: [DODGE] CRANIDOS: [HEAD BUTT MOVE]

PIKACHU: [PAINED]

ASH: You can do it Pikachu. Use Thunderbolt!

PIKACHU: [THUNDERBOLT MOVE] ROARK: Zen Headbutt, quick!

CRANIDOS: [ZEN HEADBUTT MOVE] PIKACHU: [PAINED]

ASH: Whoa, that Cranidos is so fast it b*at us to the punch!

- ROARK: Now use Head Butt! - ASH: Pikachu, Dodge it!

CRANIDOS: [HEAD BUTT MOVE]

PIKACHU: [PAINED]

ASH: Pikachu no! Those att*cks that

Headbutt. Zen Headbutt, man!

ASH: How're we going to deal with those?

DAWN: Cranidos is so fast!

BROCK: This is tough! Cranidos's speed, along with the power of

those Head Butts are keeping Pikachu from

doing much of anything!

ASH: Come on Pikachu I know you can do it

but you just got to hang in there!

PIKACHU: [EXERTION]

DAWN: Paul's leaving?

ASH: What the.

PIKACHU: [DETERMINED]

PIKACHU: [THUNDERBOLT MOVE]

ASH: Pikachu..!

PIKACHU: [EXERTION]

ROARK: A Pokémon defending its trainer is truly a sight to see.

CRANIDOS: [AGREEING]

ASH: Okay, Pikachu,

let's show them something they'll never forget!

PIKACHU: [AFFIRMATIVE]

ASH: Quick att*ck let's go! PIKACHU: [AFFIRMATIVE]

PIKACHU: [QUICK att*ck MOVE]

ROARK: Pikachu's fast, but you mustn't forget that using Normal

att*cks such as that won't do much at all against my Cranidos!

Use Flamethrower!

CRANIDOS: [FLAMETHROWER MOVE]

ASH: Dodge and use Iron Tail!

PIKACHU: [DODGING]

PIKACHU: [IRON TAIL MOVE] CRANIDOS: [SURPRISED]

DAWN: Wow! See that?

- ROARK: That was so fast! - ASH: Do it!

PIKACHU: [IRON TAIL MOVE]

CRANIDOS: [PAINED] DAWN: Perfect!

BROCK: Using the Quick att*ck's

speed along with Iron Tail was great thinking!

CRANIDOS: [DETERMINED]

ASH: That should have put Cranidos away!

ASH: But Cranidos is just standing there!

ROARK: I like the way you combine your moves!

ROARK: But now I want you to watch this!

Cranidos, Head Smash!

CRANIDOS: [HEAD SMASH MOVE]

ASH: Uh oh!

PAUL: So Roark learned that move after all..

DAWN: That's new to me.

BROCK: Head Smash of all the Head Butt moves in Cranidos'

arsenal, Head Smash is by far the strongest and most

dangerous as well! Of course they're all powerful,

but Head Smash can cause recoil damage too.

ASH: If you're going for it then we will!

Pikachu Volt Tackle now!

PIKACHU: [VOLT TACKLE MOVE]

DAWN: Volt Tackle?

But Ash knows that it could possibly injure Pikachu!

PAUL: Pathetic strategy.

CRANIDOS: [HEAD SMASH MOVE]

PIKACHU: [VOLT TACKLE MOVE]

CRANIDOS: [HEAD SMASH MOVE]

PIKACHU: [VOLT TACKLE MOVE]

PIKACHU: [STUNNED]

ASH: Pikachu! CRANIDOS: [DETERMINED]

ROARK: Cranidos, no!

ASH: Cranidos is still standing!

ROARK: As is Pikachu! You've raised your Pokémon well!

ASH: Pikachu it's too dangerous for you to go on

so come back here!

PIKACHU: [RELIEVED]

ROARK: I can't wait to see the rest of your team!

So, who will be your third Pokémon?

ASH: Turtwig, I choose you!

TURTWIG: [APPEARING]

ROARK: A Turtwig!

That should be a real advantage in a Rock type Gym!

CRANIDOS: [AGREEING] ASH: Razor Leaf, Turtwig, go!

TURTWIG: [RAZOR LEAF MOVE]

ROARK: Flamethrower now!

CRANIDOS: [FLAMETHROWER MOVE]

ASH: Dodge it! Then Bite, Turtwig!

TURTWIG: [DODGING]

OARK: Oh my! That might be the fastest Turtwig I've ever seen!

PAUL: I hate to admit it but

Turtwig's speed really improved.

TURTWIG: [BITE MOVE]

ROARK: Zen Headbutt, go!

TURTWIG: [BITE MOVE]

CRANIDOS: [ZEN HEADBUTT MOVE]

TURTWIG: [PAINED]

BROCK: I can't believe after all this time Cranidos

can still keep battling like that!

ROARK: Use Flamethrower!

CRANIDOS: [FLAMETHROWER MOVE]

TURTWIG: [EXERTION]

BROCK: A Grass type like Turtwig is vulnerable to a

Flamethrower att*ck and could really get hurt!

- DAWN: Turtwig, stay strong! - ASH: Razor Leaf!

TURTWIG: [RAZOR LEAF MOVE]

CRANIDOS: [PAINED]

CRANIDOS: [DAZED]

IAN: Cranidos is unable to battle! Turtwig is the winner!

TURTWIG: [PLEASED] ASH: All right!

DAWN: Wow, Turtwig was awesome!

BROCK: But don't forget,

Roark has Pokémon he hasn't brought out.

ROARK: Cranidos, rock solid! You really toughed it out!

ASH: Whoa, that's over with,

but we went through way too much to defeat just Pokémon!

PIKACHU: [CALLING]

PIKACHU: [ENCOURAGING] TURTWIG: [AGREEING]

ASH: It's still anyone's battle, you're right!

Okay, Paul, watch this!

ROARK: All right, Ash, it's time for my second Pokémon! Let's go!

ONIX: [APPEARING] TURTWIG: [DETERMINED]

ASH: I'm going to stick with Turtwig, Roark!

ROARK: All right! Ready?

ASH: You bet! Turtwig, Razor Leaf, go!

TURTWIG: [RAZOR LEAF MOVE]

BROCK: Good one! That Razor Leaf should do a lot of damage!

ROARK: Dodge then Double Edge!

ONIX: [DODGING]

ONIX: [DOUBLE-EDGE MOVE]

TURTWIG: [PAINED] TURTWIG: [DAZED]

IAN: Turtwig's unable to battle! Onix's the winner!

ASH: Turtwig! PIKACHU: [WORRIED]

DAWN: No way, with one hit?

BROCK: I guess Cranidos' Flamethrower must have done a

lot more damage than I initially thought.

ASH: Okay Turtwig return!

You were great! So Pikachu I guess it's all up to you now!

PIKACHU: [DETERMINED]

ROARK: I know it's your last Pokémon

but I'm not going to go easy on you!

ASH: Right! Iron Tail!

PIKACHU: [IRON TAIL MOVE] ROARK: A nice big Slam!

ONIX: [SLAM MOVE]

PIKACHU: [IRON TAIL MOVE]

ONIX: [SLAM MOVE]

ONIX: [PAINED]

PIKACHU: [WEAK]

BROCK: Iron Tail is a good matchup but I'm afraid Pikachu

has pretty much reached the limit.

DAWN: Pikachu, I know you can do it!

SH: All right then, I know Electric type moves aren't going

to do any damage at all on a Ground type.

ASH: And what about that speed?

ASH: Of course! Use Thunderbolt on the Field!

PIKACHU: [THUNDERBOLT MOVE]

ONIX: [SURPRISED]

ROARK: Now Onix, use Double-Edge!

ONIX: [DOUBLE-EDGE MOVE]

- DAWN: Brock what's going on? - BROCK: This is great!

BROCK: Those rocks have slowed Onix way down!

ASH: Pikachu, Quick att*ck now!

PIKACHU: [QUICK att*ck MOVE]

ONIX: [PAINED]

PIKACHU: [QUICK att*ck MOVE]

ONIX: [EXERTION]

ROARK: Onix Screech att*ck!

ONIX: [SCREECH MOVE]

PIKACHU: [PAINED]

PIKACHU: [PAINED]

ONIX: [SCREECH MOVE]

PIKACHU: [EXTREME PAIN]

ASH: Pikachu!

PIKACHU: [DETERMINED]

ASH: You're okay.!

PIKACHU: [PAINED]

PIKACHU: [DAZED]

IAN: Pikachu is unable to battle! Onix is the winner,

and so the victory goes to Roark the Gym Leader!

ROARK: Onix, great work!

ONIX: [PLEASED]

DAWN: So that's it - it's over.

BROCK: It was going well up until the point when

Pikachu used Thunderbolt to break up the field....

BROCK: .but who would've predicted Onix's Screech

would do what it did and so quickly?

ASH: Pikachu, you're the best.

PIKACHU: [HAPPY]

ASH: Oh yeah.

PAUL: How pathetic.

NARRATOR: And so, our Hero's first attempt at a Sinnoh

victory ends in his first defeat. The road to a Sinnoh

League victory may be a long and rocky one,

but we'll be there every step of the way!
