an incredible challenge.

has to find the other.

how long I'm gonna be out here.

All I have is a compass bearing.

- It's a needle in a haystack.

It's the strangest thing
I've ever felt.

where it hurts the most.

- I would suggest
a helicopter evacuation.

He's definitely badly damaged
his--his lower back.

He's in a lot of pain there.

in my life.

The one thing I feared
the most came true.

we're going home

without winning this would be
a major injury upon one of us.

I'm disappointed.

And then I think about Jesse.

You know, this is gonna suck
to have to tell him

that the one thing that could
take us out just happened.

a horrible moment.

I still can't make a fire.
It's ridiculous.

I've tried
every technique I know.

I found some hemlock trees,

Anyways, I found some--

God, I hope Shannon's okay.

- He sustained
a pretty severe back injury,

so we had to extract him.

He's okay.

He's at the hospital now,

and, unfortunately, we have to
extract you now as well.

to him today.

- All I care about is
he's okay, honestly.

This experience is
an amazing opportunity.

It's probably the most
radical thing I've ever done.

Right after high school,
growing up in Michigan,

all I wanted to do
was go to the mountains,

go see wilderness,
and so I went out west.

I worked in Yellowstone
National Park

and then was a wild-land
firefighter in Montana.

It's the perfect size.

Finding and living
your real passion,

that's kind of been
my philosophy.

most of my adult life.

anticipate an encounter,

then you're
going to be surprised by it,

and you won't know
how to handle yourself.

I gotta admit,
I'm not the bravest person

as soon as it gets dark.

[whistle tweets]

I just really want
Dave to get here.

- This is my shelter.

I don't know if you can
see anything in here.

It's not too bad.

It keeps the rain off
pretty well.

I'll wait until my son, Sam,
gets to me before we build

a permanent shelter.

Coming out here,
I had a two-fold goal.

The most important was
to spend time with my son.

Number two goal was to put
my skills and knowledge

to the ultimate test.

I don't think there's
a lot of people my age

that would want to do this.

For me, it's just the pinnacle
of my outdoor experience

and knowledge.

But I'm really worried
about Sam on the hike.

Moving around out here
and covering any distance,

you are much more likely
to encounter a large predator.

I'll be so happy
when Sam gets here

and we can go on
about our business

of getting into the groove.

♪ ♪

Sam and I both have a lot
of experience in the outdoors.

I've been a hunter
and fisherman all my life.

Learned most of my basic skills
from my father,

but I picked up a few on my own.

- Since I was little,
my dad's brought me outside,

and it's what I'm used to.
It's what I enjoy.

I like to understand the forest.

I like to understand
the plants

and the relationships between

the plants
and all the animals.

It's what I went
to school for.

I got my degree
in Fisheries Management.

- Better.
Digging...

Sam and I both have
adventure in our blood,

but I've never had
any one thing test my skills

the way this challenge will.

I know we'll be arguing
about stinky socks,

and it'll be a test,

but we'll get through it.

♪ ♪

- Ow, holy cow, ow.

- That was hot--Look,
it burned the hair on my arm.

- It's low tide now.

Time to make it out there
to the island

and see if I can catch a fish.

Gotta get something in me.

I was really depending on fish.

So far, nothing.

Our decision on who would be
the camper and who would be

the hiker was just--I mean,
it was a very easy decision.

At my age,
I had no misconceptions

about my abilities to do that.

I have the knowledge,
but I don't have

the physical strength and
endurance that I used to have.

Okay, baby, come on.

Let's catch a fish.

I think this is an incredible
opportunity for the two of us.

It could bring us
really close together.

It could drive a wedge
between us.

I don't know.

I just came back from the water,
and I caught a fish.

It doesn't make any sense.

My dad's off
in that direction,

and I gotta go find him.

I've been following
my bearing.

All I can do is trust
that it's gonna get me there.

The only reason I'm into
going in the outdoors

is because my dad stuck me out
here since I was a little kid.

My dad's the strongest guy
that anybody will ever be

fortunate enough to meet,
but obviously

I'm concerned about him.

I've seen people
really hurt themselves

out here in the wilderness.

Oh, that would be such a relief.

I knew the terrain
was gonna be rough,

but, honestly, cameras just--
they can't capture it.

big clearing up ahead.

I'm gonna go ahead
and check it out.

All right, well, it seems
in my struggle

to maintain balance,
I accidentally

just fell in some thick mud.

The ground is so soft,
it's almost like

walking in snow.

I've been very fortunate
to not really hurt myself.

I remember Larry said
something in season 2,

that he's just not performing
the way he wanted to,

that he'd expected
when he came out here.

And I understand what he means,
you know?

I totally get it now.

This forest just tears you up.

It is unforgiving.

I see a big clearing.

I can hear moving water too.

I thought it was gonna be
a stream that I could

maybe follow down
to the coast...

But that stream didn't
go to the coast.

It went to this.

Big old pond--goes on
as far as I can see.

I really don't know
what to do now.

God, I just don't know.

And my compass bearing is,
you know, about this direction,

but I can't even see
the other side of the pond.

I mean, I guess that's always
an option, to take my boots off

and just wade across it,
but that's just

a whole nother story.

I think, at this point,
I'm just gonna head off

over in this direction
where I think I can hear

the running water.

I mean, this is the complete
opposite direction

I need to be traveling in,
but the problem is

I think that's my best bet
for crossing this pond.

This is really kind of
the last thing

I was hoping to run into.

♪ ♪

But my dad's out there.

I need to get across this pond.

♪ ♪

This is treacherous.

It makes me really nervous.

Holy [bleep], it's cold.

What's the chances of that?

That salmon was basically just
swimming right on the edge

of the water.

I just kind of knocked it up
on the shoreline.

And now I gotta cook it
over the fire.

go to sleep hungry.

I've had this cedar bark
in my pants pocket

for a couple days now.

I think it's dry.

I ain't even worrying
about a fire tonight.

This is unbelievable.

Everything's soaking wet.

Not being able
to make that fire--

that's just
a complete failure.

There's no way that I can
let this fish go to waste.

Some fresh bear tracks
through the grass this morning.

All that grass
has been laid down.

Hmm, there's some poop

from a crab-
and clam-eating bear.

Look at all that shell in there.

It just chews the whole thing up
and swallows it.

That's a tough bear, there.

Gotta keep my eyes open.

There are bears
all over the place here.

I never know where
one might show up.

Lots of deep imprints in this.

Wow, I think there's been
a pretty big bear in here.

Another bear poop.
That's a little one.

Might be a baby.

Ooh, that's not a baby.

Look at that--
just full of berries.

And it looks like the bear
has been walking across that log

pretty frequently.

You can see how torn up
it is right there.

Looks like a lot of weight was
put down on there.

Maybe 200, 300 pounds,
something like that.

moving down there.

Just caught it
out of the corner of my eye.

I'm sure it knows I'm here.

Today is my oldest daughter's
birthday, Presley,

and she's 14 today.

I have never missed
her birthday.

I knew coming into this
how tight-knit my family is,

but I also had this desire
to test myself.

Today's task will include
setting up a drying rack

for my firewood.

Everything is so damp here--

I really need
a "next fire" mentality

where I'm doing something
to prepare my materials

for the next fire.

♪ ♪

All right, where are
those straight sticks I need

for my drying rack?

[whacking]

My wife and I are really close.

We work together.

We eat lunch together
every day.

I'm a really active parent.

If I'm not at the deer camp
or in the woods, you know,

we're pretty much together.

The idea of me being away
however long this is gonna be

is something my wife
and two daughters

did not make peace with.

They just did not want me
to come out here.

I really needed them to say,

"This is awesome
you're doing this.

"This is a once
in a lifetime chance.

We're so proud of you, yay!"

[exhales]

But all I got was tears.

They couldn't stand the idea
of being away from me.

Oh, that makes it
so much harder.

I've got my poles cut

and I just need to pick,
you know, the spot here.

I've dumped a lot
on my wife to do this.

It's a selfish thing to do.

The only way I can justify
the amount of extra work

my wife has to go through
in my absence,

managing our family
and our businesses,

would be to bring home
the prize money.

It would be great
to pay the house off

and pay the kids' tuitions
and, you know, things like that.

I've spent the first few days
really just struggling

against the mental banter.

once Brody gets here.

My sister's living

I've been around bears a bit,
and it is a scary situation.

If somebody tells you
that they're not scared,

they're either lying

or they don't know
what they're talking about.

But you have to be a top of
the food chain predator also

and think like that so you're
not scared all the time

and that you do feel like
you're protecting

your little corner
of the world.

This whole area smells
like smoke now.

As far as animals,
you know, that's--

that's always a good thing.

Smoke it up.

Oh, that could've been so bad.

What an amazing, emotional
experience to see him.

What an epic journey
that guy had had.

Whatever the experience
will be from here forward

will be different.

Things are better when you
have someone to share it with.
