Being alone and surviving
has been tough,

but I've been working so hard

and realized

I have no idea
how much further I have to go.

out of food.

I'm feeling kind of nervous,

that I'm just not gonna
be able to make it

because I don't have
enough food.

I'm hoping that Ted's
harvested a deer.

Tanned the hide.

Smoked the meat,
but saved some fresh, you know,

filet mignon
kind of thing for me.

Ted is
the only other guy I know

that can handle
just being cold

and wet and miserable

and doing hard physical labor
day after day.

I know that he's doing
really awesome.

Right now, I'm gonna pick
a whole bunch of the greens.

There's what I think
is watercress here

and a whole bunch
of dandelion greens, and, uh,

maybe those will give me
an extra push.

Dandelions have more nutrients
in them than broccoli.

Dandelion greens, that is.

Gonna be a nutritious morsel.

Not a filling one
but a nutritious one.

These here are salal buds.

These almost have, like,

a little bit
of a sweet flavor to them.

a few calories
to keep me going.

enough protein.

I'm gonna keep pushing
to find Ted,

but unfortunately, it takes
X amount of calories.

If your car runs out of gas,
you can't go anywhere.

- Today is the first day

that I have to actually
take a number two.

I'm sure you all wanted
to hear that, but, uh,

what that says to me

is, I haven't
really eaten enough

since I got out here, so...

what we'll wipe with out here.

Moss.

There's a few different
varieties.

This one's not bad.
There's some better ones.

Uh, you might think it sucks,
but it's all moist.

It's sort of, like,
got a spritz,

like--like at
the grocery store,

the spritz of the vegetables,

and, you know,
it's a dual-action cleaner.

It's better than you think,
believe me.

Sometimes it's better
than toilet paper.

Yay.

Don't worry, I'll spare you
on watching that one.

The tide is way out,

and, uh, I'm gonna
check my gill net.

The first couple days,
my gill net was amazing.

Caught me five fish,
and then it's just nothing.

I haven't caught anything
in it.

I'm feeling some of the effects
of hunger already.

Things are really starting
to get hard.

Things that are simple for me
I'm finding challenging,

really exhausting.

I'm really needing food.

They say you can't go through
a period of significant change

without also going through
a period of pain.

Hopefully, for me,
it's a positive change,

and I come out of this
experience a better person.

Come on, baby.

Don't see any [bleep]
fish in it.

Man, that's upsetting.

to even start a fire with.

I started going out fishing
and crabbing with my dad

when I was very young.

I would go along

even when it was just him
doing the fishing.

My mom says she has
a picture of me somewhere

in one hand

and a fish in the other.

on limpets alone.

Started taking Sam out
with me

when he was just young also.

He loves fishing.
He loves the outdoors.

He goes crazy
if he has to stay

inside
for any length of time.

He's a true outdoorsman.
I'm proud of that.

when Sam was gonna get here.

Must be brutal.

I mean, he doesn't
even have a shelter set up.

One of the things
that keeps me going

when times get tough
is thinking about

what it used to be like
for outdoorsmen

and for people
whose way of life

was living off the land
in remote areas.

I mean, today
everybody's so spoiled.

You know, people have quads,
they have snowmobiles,

they have power boats,
they have jeeps.

Back then, a good hunter
was an athlete.

Now a good hunter
can be grossly obese

and just b*mb everywhere
on a quad.

What I'm doing right now

was just commonplace
at one time,

and you realize that a lot
of what you think is hard

is really just in your head.

What we think
is our breaking point

is nowhere close
to where it actually is.

Anything's possible.

Doing things
by your own sweat and blood

and your own muscle,

and that's definitely
what we're doing out here.

It's looking all right.

Now, I can saw the top off

to catch minnows

and fish and little things,

but I'm not finding food.

Being in this spot
is gonna be very challenging.

There's some shore crabs
and some limpets,

but there's not a lot
of rocks

to turn over
with food under them.

My gill net has just been
an absolute nightmare.

I just--I haven't
caught anything in it

throughout the past
probably five days.

I just had a look at the net,

and I can't fully see it,

but it looks like
there's nothing in it.

It's pretty upsetting.

By the time Jim gets here,

I'd like to have
a little more done

than just
a piece of [bleep] shelter

and a gill net set up
with no food for him.

[sawing]

It's not easy carrying
a 60-pound pack with no food,

and when he gets here,
there's just nothing.

So, realistically,
we're gonna

have to get
other food sources,

or we're not gonna
last long here.

My cove here
has absolutely no action.

Nothing.
I'm not seeing any fish.

And so I was thinking
of starting to make a boat.

This is a nice curve here.

The front of the boat,
you imagine, goes like that.

I'm telling you,
when you're hungry,

you move slower,
you work [bleep].

You can't make
your decisions as easily.

Out here,
every little decision

is just magnified.

It has to be
the right decision,

or you have to commit to it

and make it
the right decision.

And that's one of the things
I'm struggling with.

This would be the middle of
my boat--or makeshift canoe,

whatever you wanna call it.

And then this piece here
is the front.

I'll have ridges
coming across here

and across the back
or this other side

and then a few more pieces
running the length.

And then, I wrap it
with the tarp.

So much pressure
on everything.

It's a really hard burden.

I really hope, when
there's two people here,

we can come to decisions
together

and work at things together

and start producing
some [bleep] results.
