- I'm gonna do this, man.

I'm gonna do this.

I'm gonna fight this thing
out till the last breath.

♪ ♪

- OK, game on.

[bear growls]

- [grunts]
- I got him.

- In "Alone's" most
remote location yet...

- [screams]

- Ten participants set out
to survive at all costs.

- My goal is to stay alive.

- [groans]

- Battling extreme isolation.

- There is no camera crews.

You are really alone.

- It'll eat at you, tear you up.

- God, why?
- It's a battle.

Nobody ever comes out the same.

- Oh, man.
- It'd be impossible to.

- And fierce predators.

- It's a big bear.

It was right outside my shelter.

- Predators like that
damn sure gonna k*ll you.

- Please don't rip my face off.
[marten screeching]

Ow. He bit the hell out of me.

- They'll endure
merciless wind...

- Been over 60 hours,
and it has not let up.

- I can hear the trees
falling down around me.

- And bitter cold.

- This whole place has
turned into a frozen hill.

- Last one standing...
- It's a moose. Wow.

- Whoo!
- No, no.

- Wins.

♪ ♪

- I'm out looking for
anything this morning.

See how fresh that
bear [bleep] is?

I just got to find him.

I don't have to accept failure.

I just have to
continue to get food.

- [sighs]

I don't think I can
sh**t this bear.

It's obviously a sow with cubs.

What a beautiful sign.

Time to go home to my
mama bear and my cub.

♪ ♪

- I hit it.

Hell yeah.

I got a bird, but
I'm down an arrow.

- Now that I have my
shelter completed,

this pull to go home is
just burning inside of me.

This is Jodi Rose. I'm
officially tapping out.

- Stay right there, my friend.
[marten snarls]

You're free, you're free!

I'm gonna take
down all my snares.

I haven't seen any rabbits,

and I did not like that poor
thing suffering in that snare.

- Can you see it? Oh, h*.

[imitates growling]

I got two nice fish.

Yes!

I put them in safe
reservoir for the night.

How the [bleep]?

Oh, no, they're gone.

Obviously, it [bleep] wasn't.

♪ ♪

- Done the gillnet.

She's done.

Launch the gillnet
into the lake.

♪ ♪

The fishing doesn't
get any better

as it goes into winter.

So it was good to have
another means of potentially

getting food besides
hand casting.

So I'm really putting a lot
of hope into my gillnet.

♪ ♪

[sighs] Man.

After all that, I
forgot to press record.

I just launched my gillnet.

It went really smoothly.

Yeah, so there's
the gillnet, guys.

I'm just looking for some
half blind, dumb old fish

to swim into it.

Good day for building
the door to the shelter.

I don't want to get hit
with three or four days

of crappy weather
and be stuck in there

without the door.

♪ ♪

I wasn't too
interested in school.

It's so ironic because
I'm a teacher now, right?

But no, school wasn't my thing.

I hated doing homework.

I want to keep these
ones more spaced out

because my door tapers
wide at the bottom.

What do I want to do in life?
I want to have fun, right?

I don't want to go
home and do homework.

I want to go ride my bike.
I want to go fishing.

There's some good moss up here.

The teachers I
respected the most

and worked the hardest
for were the ones that

I had a good relationship with,

that had time for me,
was interested in me

as a human.

This is gonna be one
well insulated door,

that's for sure.

My favorite part
about teaching is

the relationships
and connections

you form with the kids.

I like to show them
my human side a lot.

I admit when I make mistakes.

I'm constantly joking around
and just trying to have

as much fun as possible.

That will hold that moss
there, like, rock solid.

And trying to think of
ways to make learning fun.

And that's my door, my
insulated moss door.

That's sweet.

I'm ready for winter.

- Being hungry makes you
do some questionable stuff.

Howdy, mister.

Um, you the guy
giving out berries?

looking for a bear?

I couldn't tell you that
kind of information.

That bear, he told me
you're a crafty feller.

Ain't to be trusted.

Not me. I'm a pretty
trustworthy guy.

You seem down on your luck.

giving out berries?

You look at an awful lot like
the first fella who just come

running through these parts.

Not me.

I've never been here
a day in my life.

You sure you ain't
the same fella?

What a dummy.

Cowboys are so dumb.

Today is the day.

Today's bear day.

Hopefully, that bear's
out in that meadow,

picking off the very
last of the berries.

I got a good idea
where I want to sit.

All I can do is hope he'll
do what I think he's gonna do

and be there waiting on him.

OK.

There's a little bit of berries
still left in this patch

out here.

I got berries left.

So there's a main trail that
the caribou and the bears

are using that comes
right down here.

♪ ♪

I'll try and just
set up on this trail.

We'll make a little blind out
of this cubby of trees here.

♪ ♪

I didn't gain any weight
for this competition.

I know that will be
a hindrance to me.

But I don't think that
it would be right.

I believe that the
idea of being out here

is to see how long I can survive

on this little "Gilligan's
Island" territory.

I'll use this tree
as a little chair.

Just don't want all
that bark down my neck

every time I move my head.

♪ ♪

Think that's pretty good.

♪ ♪

Long days in this
blind. I'm going crazy.

♪ ♪

It takes a lot of
mental strength

to force yourself to sit here.

♪ ♪

Thinking about my little boy
a lot while I'm out here.

I try not to, but I think
a lot about the baby

we just lost as well.

When it's on my mind,
I try to escape it,

but it's not really something
that you can get away from.

Now I just need a bear.

I just need a bear.

[sighs]

I had enough.

Couldn't sit no more.

I've come to the...

I've come to the
realization that...

that was my last walk that
far till I can get some...

some serious food of some kind.

I think I see a squirrel.

I do see a squirrel
way up in that tree.

[squirrel chittering]

♪ ♪

I'm very hungry.

I need this.

♪ ♪

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- Got him.

I got him good.

He's bleeding good.

Where is it?

I can't even find it now.

[bleep].

I think he's dead
in the tree now.

[sighs]

I'm so hungry.

So I'm gonna try and
climb this tree real quick

and get to him.

He's right... He's
right up there.

He quit moving, and I can
see blood dripping down.

I think he's dead.

I got him good with
the... Oh, maybe not.

It was a good shot.

I can't believe he went up there

and wrapped onto
that tree and died.

Couple blueberries here.

That's how hungry I am.

I'm like, "Oh,
man, blueberries,"

while I'm trying to
get the squirrel.

I'm, like, 99%
positive he's dead.

I can't just let
him waste up there,

not when I'm starving to death.

Not period, but especially
when I'm starving to death.

That squirrel makes this
walk to do worthwhile.

♪ ♪

- I watched my first deer die

when I was about five years old.

My father and I, we'd
gone hunting together.

And he... he eased the
r*fle up into his shoulder,

and it went off,

and she collapsed,

and he smiled at me, and
we walked down to her.

And I look at her eyes,

just lifeless open eyes,

and I leaned down, and
I touched her coat,

and her body was warm,

and I got all teary eyed.

♪ ♪

And I remember, he looked at me,

and he said, "You
can't undo this.

This is how we survive."

♪ ♪

♪ ♪

[squirrel chittering]

[groans] Oh, ow.

Ow, he's biting me.

[bleep]. [bleep].

Ow, [bleep].

♪ ♪

[panting]

I got that squirrel.

I bet that squirrel wasn't
even worth the calories

to climb that tree, but I'm
not gonna wound a critter

that's gonna die and leave it.

I hit him a little low.

Man, he bit the hell out of me.

I'll wash that out
good when I get back.

I gotta take these...

Take this shirt off and
stuff and get the...

Get the sticks off of
me. I almost passed out.

♪ ♪

But I got a squirrel
for my effort.

♪ ♪

[sighs]

That'll do.

♪ ♪

- Last night, my door
was, like, rock solid.

It's a beautiful bluebird day
out there, but she's chilly.

I'm gonna check the
gillnet right now.

Exciting stuff, man.

Keep her going. Keep pushing.

♪ ♪

I'm really putting a lot
of hope into my gillnet.

This could be my key to staying

in the game the longest.

♪ ♪

Come on, fish in the gillnet.

♪ ♪

It doesn't look like
there's anything in there

that I can see. Nope.

Damn, I was really
hoping I had fish in here

this morning.

I need to eat,

or my time here is
going to be brief.

That sucks.

♪ ♪

I've noticed the fall brushing
my cheeks some nights,

that cold air coming in.

Some of the things I was
eating are dying off,

like the Labrador tea.

It's harder to find
green leaves to make

your tea in the morning.

The mushrooms are kind
of getting rotten.

Being alone isn't what
I'm worried about.

Man, I like to eat.

♪ ♪

Gut's definitely
getting smaller.

I used to be able to just
grab it with two hands.

My most valuable
asset is time fishing.

This seems to be the only way

I'm getting food is hand lining,

so I've got to do it, right?

I got one more day with food.

Not a lot, but
enough. Then I'm SOL.

I got today and tomorrow
to catch a fish,

if I don't want to ever
be without food for a day.

♪ ♪

Holy [bleep].

There's a huge fish right there.

Take it, take it. What is it?

Oh, it's that big pike.

Oh, my God, he was huge.

He was right there.

He was, like, this big.

Oh, sh**t.

Oh, there he is. sh**t.

And there's some... darn it.

But that's a good sign
he came back for it.

Man, that was the biggest
fish I've seen here,

that's for sure.

Son of a g*n.

It's so frustrating, man.

Like, I can't even
describe to you

how frustrating it
is to be so close,

but not have anything
on the shore.

Don't get mad,

Right hand goes out.

Something gonna strike.

Just goes out.

little nibbles there.

it a little fish?

but hey, I'm happy.

Oh, I set the hook
perfect. It was awesome.

So I'm gonna keep fishing here.

Take advantage of this, man.

It'd be nice to pile
up a couple of fish

in the old fish bag, you know?

What made me specifically
want to teach

outdoor ed and survival

and experience all these things

that I've enjoyed
in my whole life

was because I'm so
passionate about it.

Being an outdoor ed teacher,

I'm known as a guy who
loves hunting and fishing

and being outside,

and I'm teaching these kids
all these outdoor skills.

♪ ♪

And I want that passion
transferred into the kids.

Got one.

♪ ♪

[sighs] Two fish day,

and the day's not even over.

Oh, my God.

crap, he's a big one.

OK, he's under the shelf.
He's under the shelf.

Holy [bleep], this is a big one.

I can't believe this.

[sighs] Oh, my God,

I need to take a minute
here. Are you serious?

Three fish.

What is going on with...

What's going on with
the fishing today?

It's so good!

There's something
happening here today.

I don't know what it
is, but I like it.

I'm gonna keep fishing
till it's dark.

My goal going in
to this experience

was to not be embarrassed
by my performance,

and be an inspiration
to the outdoor ed kids.

I feel like I'm
finally doing that.

Be nice to get one more tonight.

I don't even know what to say.

[sighs] It's unbelievable.

I'll never forget this day.

- There's a grouse. Missed it.

Chasing this bird all
the way across hell

and half of Georgia.

[bleep].

I got no grouse this morning.

Having a hard go right now,

but still got a lot
of stuff to do today.

Gonna work on my
shelter a little bit.

Gonna try to get this
thing to where...

It's actually half past warm
because it's starting to get

colder at nights and mornings.

So...

let's move this show outside.

Gotta get this stuff done

before the snow
comes in and caves in

the side of my tent.

Gonna do just like I did before,

I'm gonna cut poles
and bring them

over here and lay them down.

Then I'll clean them
up and stand them up.

Wasted a good bit of
time on shelters so far.

This is a temporary shelter.

Permanent shelter will
be coming up soon.

The trees around here
really aren't big enough

to build a decent cabin
for it to be over my head.

I'd have to have


This is actually the first
teepee I've ever built.

Oh, it's just not long
enough. Son of a [bleep].

[grunts]

And I just don't see it becoming

what I wanted it
to become, so...

God, this is a
good spot to build.

It's just... I
can't find anything

to start with or build to.

I don't know.

Maybe I can build some kind
of a lean-to structure.

I don't know, man.

It's terrible.

I feel like I look like
I don't have any idea

what I'm doing when I do.

It's just learning a new place.

God!

Oh, this is so [bleep]
hard when you're tired.

This is supposed to be
where I was having fun.

Would have loved
to build a cabin,

but this is what I've started,
this is what I'm doing.

I'm not going backwards.

In a survival situation,
you can only plan so much.

Everything's so unpredictable.

I gotta get out of this groove.

I've been making one mistake
right after the other.

I'm a carpenter.

I was gonna come out here.

I was going to have
a single pitch cabin.

And coming out here,

the situation that I was handed

was I'm exhausted,

and I have to make do
with what I can build

right now, not what
I can have done

two weeks from now.

I'm not used to a
whole lot of snow,

but I know

that snow gets heavy,

and I want my shelter to be
able to withstand heavy snow.

In fact, I'd like for
it to hold it in place

to help insulate more.

As a young child,
I lived on a farm.

My parents were renting
to own the farm.

And our landlord died, and
we were forced to move.

Wound up in poverty.

Bring on the sun.

We built a basic shack.

We were collecting
rainwater in barrels

because we had no running water.

When we did have electricity,
it came from a generator.

It's one thing for
an adult to decide

I'm gonna live off grid.

It's another thing for a
child who has to go to school

not having a bath for a week.

This is my last pole.

If I didn't grow up
having to adapt...

Insulation.

I probably wouldn't
be here today.

So it's kind of a
double edged sword.

All right, think
I'm done working

on the shelter for today.

[dramatic music]

- Good morning.

Got mighty cold last night.

It is pretty this morning.

I couldn't help but
notice this morning

that my belt is fitting
a little looser on me

today than it was yesterday.

From the mark I made on
it when I first came out,

I've lost about four
inches of waste.

It is a beautiful
morning, though.

♪ ♪

My entire strategy
revolves around

the pursuit of big game.

That squirrel is done.

Gonna have me a nice
breakfast c*ck.

But unfortunately, I understand

that my metabolism
will not hold me up

without a source of fat.

♪ ♪

Everything in here has a
little bit of a bitter flavor

because I'm desperate,

and I cut a chunk of
the extra off my belt

that's just dragging
and threw it in the pot.

So it's got fat in it.

I can see it on the top there.

♪ ♪

I'm just desperate for
some fat or some food.

♪ ♪

There it is, piece of leather.

♪ ♪

OK, here goes.

♪ ♪

Oh, that tastes horrid.

♪ ♪

Can't do it.

Can't do it, too chewy.

Every bite, every chew
is just the worst taste

I've ever had in my mouth, ever.

[grunts]

[spits]

I hope that little bit of
oil in the belt leather

will do me some good.

OK, so I'm feeling
a little better.

I'm just gonna hit the west side

of that berry patch,

and it's just a
couple hundred yards,

but it's getting to be
about all I can do, man.

Even my face just looks sunk in.

♪ ♪

[sighs]

It's so frustrating because

I know where that bear moves.

I know where he's been eating.

Pathetic excuse for blueberries,

but it is food

I absolutely cannot pass up.

But the berries
are all but gone,

and it's gonna get really
tough from here out

to find that bear.

♪ ♪

[bleep]. [groans]

So I almost fell
down over nothing.

I'm exhausted after that.

[sighs]

I gotta go find
something to k*ll.

Right now.

♪ ♪

I can't help but think
of an Iroquois legend

about a Mohawk village
that was haunted

by a great spirit bear.

♪ ♪

All of the greatest hunters
tried to get the spirit bear,

and all they could
ever find was tracks.

Fresh bear poop.

Still on him, kind of.

I'm onto him.

Three hunters had a dream that
they caught the spirit bear,

and so they decided
to take their dog,

and they began hunting for days

and days on end without rest.

And eventually, they came
to the edge of the Earth.

♪ ♪

And refusing to give up,
they leapt into the stars

to chase the bear
across the night sky...

♪ ♪

And when the hunters
were upon him

and thought they
finally had the bear,

he cast a net down upon them.

♪ ♪

And so when you look up into
the sky towards the North,

you will see the three
stars of the hunters

and the fourth
star of their dog,

trapped forever under his net.

We refer to this now
as the Big Dipper.

And I think that that story
is quite fitting for me

because I'm just
chasing my spirit bear.

♪ ♪

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- Nikolai, it's snowing,
buddy. It's snowing.

Look, Nikolai.

Look, it's snow.

But the sun is
starting to peek out,

so I think it'll probably
melt here in a little while.

That's pretty cool, though,
my first Canadian snow.

Huh, it's already snowing.

♪ ♪

Well, it was a lot
warmer last night.

Just insulating my shelter
really has made a difference,

but apparently, the way
I've built my shelter

is the perfect
mouse amusement park

because they have not stopped
running around this thing.

So today, I'ma
work on some traps.

Well, it's warmed
up a little bit.

I'm going to make some
figure four traps.

I'd like to have at
least four of them.

I've got some dry sticks.

Reason I like using
the dry sticks

is because they
don't bend as easy.

OK, let's work our way
through one of these.

I try to find sticks that
are somewhat straight,

but I work with what I got.

So they're a bit upright.

♪ ♪

Bushcraft is something
that's just ingrained in me.

Since my childhood,
not having anything

and having to make it
work for something,

it's nothing for me to make
a tool out of an antler

or whittle new ax handle,
whittle a new hammer handle.

You know, when that's what
you have, that's what you use.

That'll probably just
about work right there.

♪ ♪

One more part to this,
and that's the bait stick.

Let me see about how long
this thing needs to be.

♪ ♪

Somewhere right in here.

There's a beauty in
everything that you do,

whether that's
processing an animal

or processing a piece of wood.

Everything that I do out
here has a piece of me in it.

♪ ♪

Make a notch.

This is what keeps me
centered is being able

to build something
with my hands.

Then, see about where
it needs to sit.

People meditate.

I don't meditate, I carve.

♪ ♪

Now, I have the upright stick.

I have the weight stick,
where the rock will sit on it.

And then, I have the bait stick.

When all that comes
together, it makes a four.

Thus the figure four deadfall.

OK, I'm gonna get
a bunch of rocks,

bring them up places that
I want to set these traps

and get them set.

I just want something to
work until the snow comes,

and I can track. I think
I'll do a lot better.

Think that'll work.

♪ ♪

- All the nice kindling, huh?

Good fire starter.

[grunts]

Hey, you looking at my butt?

Don't be looking at my butt.

[chuckles]

Fishing's been doing OK by me.

Reindeer Lake go of Hellfire.

Proven to be a notable
lure, there's no denying it.

We're catching fish.

But the bottom line
is, I need to catch

more fish until the
Gold Hellfire fails me.

It is my go-to. [smooches]

Aw, yes, you're so pretty.

I just heard a fish.

♪ ♪

It's a sign.

I'm so excited.

to go and catch a fish.

I feel like I'm
walking on clouds.

comes through for me again.

A big pike took it.

That is terrible.

That is really terrible.

I have lost a lot
of lures in my life,

and I'll tell you,
I have never had one

make me feel so
sick as that does.

That is depressing.

♪ ♪

Well... [laughs]

I can't even describe
how I feel right now.

Not only was it losing a lure,
but I lost two treble hooks,

and I only brought four.

So I have a pile
of single hooks,

but they're not very big.

You know what I'm
saying? They won't work.

I've caught lots of
fish on single hooks,

but having a treble
hook on that lure

was obviously working very well.

I picked up a piece
of driftwood here

on the way over that...

Well, we'll never make
the Gold Hellfire again,

but maybe we can make
something close that'll work.

We just need something
that's gonna work.

♪ ♪

I came into this game
with the intention

that my big game
hunting was going to be

my feature contribution
to my survival,

and then I got here, and
I have not seen anything.

♪ ♪

So I have to change
my whole plan

on what I was going to do.

Fishing is the only thing

that's really gonna give
me a feasible chance

of staying here.

No crying over spilt
milk or lost lures.

♪ ♪

There's no room for failure.

If you think you're gonna fail,

you've already failed,

and I don't do that.

♪ ♪

She's an absolutely perfect
night to be fishing.

But we're not gonna have

this done in time for that.

♪ ♪

I don't like to quit.

There's no room in
this life for quitting

because you're
quitting on yourself,

and that's the one person
you should always count on.

I don't want to screw this up.

It's not the Gold Hellfire,

but I think it's gonna work.

One thing's for sure,
we're gonna find out.

- Well, the trap fell.

Hey, hey! Hey, look at that.

It's a rat.

I'll be eating rat.

rat before, so...

Damn, about cut his
leg off right there.

Not really what I was wanting.

I had to perform
surgery on a rat.

You have to watch
how you pull on it.

You'll pull the little
guy right in two.

There we are.

A little skinned mouse.

I'm not gonna lie to you, guys,

this has probably been
the hardest animal

I have ever gut or skinned.

I'm gonna clean my hands
off, get a fire going...

See about cooking a rat.

I've got the mindset
it's just meat.

When you're wanting
protein, and here comes

a little bitty piece of
red meat running around,

you're gonna take it.

You're gonna eat
that damn thing.

♪ ♪

Hell yes, give me rats.

♪ ♪

Right now, what I'm gonna
do is I'm going to make

a hoop out of this willow.

Stretch this little guy on.

Just because I think
it would be cool.

It's amazing how
even the smallest

little bit of food...

Move this wire to hold this
little guy in place for me.

Can really lift your spirits.
